Discovering the magic of Martha’s Vineyard

The Summercamp Hotel offers scenic views of Martha’s Vineyard.

20byNine is one of the island’s hippest spots. ALL PHOTOS PROVIDED

There’s something for everyone on this “elite” isle. Time to ditch the pastels, penny loafers and the notion that Martha’s Vineyard is too haughty for the plebeians—aka, most of us. While the island might’ve been second homes for the likes of John F. Kennedy and Barack Obama, it’s also a hotspot for some of the freshest seafood around, innovative restaurants and scenery ranging from postcard-worthy beaches to verdant, mythic glens reminiscent of Ireland. If you’re thinking Martha’s Vineyard isn’t for you, or is out of your budget, we’ve got the lowdown on how to save, where to splurge and what you absolutely can’t miss.

How to get around: Take the ferry from Wood’s Hole. Bringing a vehicle costs $44-$79 (one way, depending on size), while it’s $15/day to park in Wood’s Hole. Most people forgo cars and get around the island via local bus, bicycle, taxi or hired car (Uber and Lyft rates vary). For schedules and fares, visit steamshipauthority.com.

Cheap eats: The Larder Good Farm’s Jefferson Munroe opened this farm stand specializing in local, whole animal butchery and products such as specialty cheeses, bone broth, sauces and sandwiches. Grab provisions here before heading to the beach. 342 State Rd., Vineyard Haven, thegood.farm Larsen’s Fish Market A flapping screen door welcomes you to this rustic waterfront market, where fishermen are frequently seen hauling in their catches. Everything is fresh, from the oysters shucked in front of you to the stuffed scallops and lobster bisque. Eat out back at the few picnic tables lining the harbor, or take some filets to grill at home. 56 Basin Rd., Chilmark, larsensfishmarket.com

Meals to remember: Garde East The service — and the seafood — is amazing at Garde East, where you’ll dine overlooking Vineyard Haven’s

sherbet sunset. Yes, it’s a little white-tablecloth-y, and there is a foie gras dish on the menu, but if you want a feast for the senses and can splurge on dishes like sea-bass crudo or squid-ink chitarra, you really should. The restaurant just got a liquor license, too, a feature that’s a godsend on a mostly dry island. 52 Beach Rd., Vineyard Haven, gardeeast.com Isola Chef Jimmy Alvarado brings a Peruvian twist to this family-owned Italian restaurant in Edgartown. The daily catch ceviche features tiger’s milk and Peruvian popcorn called cancha, but the Spanish braised octopus with roasted garlic hummus will set your world ablaze. If you’ve had enough seafood, the handmade pastas and pizzas never disappoint. 19 Church St., Edgartown, isolamv.com

It won’t break the bank, either—try a mason jar of smoked bluefish for $11, or a $12 oyster po’boy. But save room for dessert, because 20byNine serves s’mores. 16 Kennebec Ave., Oak Bluffs, 20bynine.com

Where to shop: Island Copper Not for the faint-walleted, this boutique is worth a browse even if you’re on a budget. From handmade copper tables and desks to yerba mate mugs, Oaxacan blankets to paintings, Island Copper is a home decorator’s dream. 15 Mechanic St., Vineyard Haven, mvislandcopper.com Lodestone Artist Nicole Mayhew curates this seasonal shop with items from around the globe—everything from rugs to leather goods to animal skulls, these are one-of-a-kind treasures you’ll keep forever. 5 Winter St., Edgartown, lodestonebrooklyn.com

This new offering from Aeronaut is out of this world.

Rock out with this IPA. ALL PHOTOS BY HENRY JANI

Boston band releases album on Aeronaut Brewing Co. beer cans Maybe don’t shotgun this one. HENRY JANI There’s a rip in the fabric of space, time and reality in Somerville. That, and a lot of beer and LEDs. The Lights Out, a Boston indie-rock band formed over a decade ago, is celebrating the release of their fourth album “T.R.I.P” at Brooklyn Boulders Somerville. The catch is that you can only listen to the record via instructions on the side of a custom made beer can called “Intergalaxyc T.R.I.P.” from Aeronaut Brewing Co. “Beer is way more delicious than vinyl,” explains The Lights Out

guitarist Adam Ritchie. The band wanted to create a more innovative and cost effective way to share their music, which resulted in what might be the first album released solely on cans of craft beer. Ritchie notes that he has submitted this accomplishment to the Guinness World Records and is awaiting approval. “T.R.I.P.,” which stands for “The Reckonings in Pandimensionality,” is an expansive collection of musical stylings which reflects the group’s musical range. “We’ve got everything from bangers

to ballads,” explains Ritchie. The Lights Out are most known for their dynamic, hyperchromatic concerts integrating thousands of lights at local shows all the way to performances at South by Southwest. When Ritchie approached Aeronaut founder Ben Holmes with his vision of a custom beer, he described a “ligh-feeling, imperial IPA” made solely, and fittingly, from galaxy hops. “You get a little vanilla, lychee and citrus in there,” adds Holmes.

Ben Houge, professor of electronic production and design at Berklee College of Music, thinks the beer is certainly a good reflection of the album. His background in video-game scores and classical music brought him to study the ways in which music can dictate real-life experiences, specifically, eating and drinking. “Taste is well documented by scientists now,” explains Hogue. “For example, we know that high frequency sounds are associated with sweetness while low frequency noises

pair with bitterness.” He also notes that Aeronaut had to overcome the challenge of creating a flavor profile for an entire, diverse album as opposed to a single song. “I think the beer averages out all the songs and creates a mood for the whole

album,” says Hogue. The launch event, guaranteed to be extra lively as well, will open with a VIP hour where Brooklyn Boulders members and those with upgraded tickets can challenge themselves with headlight climbing. Marketing manager Abigail Taylor explains that “you’re given a headlamp, and that’s the only thing that is guiding you up the wall in the dark room.” Concert-goers can also expect the “Intergalaxyc T.R.I.P” beer, wine, break dancers and a performance by the band Bearstronaut.

and J. Cole, so we’ve just sort of known about each other forever,” Adams says. “And us doing a lot of college markets and shows, we crossed paths a lot or were on the same bill. So Waka’s a homie. It’s been cool to see other homies winning and build in the industry.” Adams notes that, while Bay State artists like himself and Cousin Stizz have found mainstream success, it’s been hard for many in Boston’s rap scene to really break through into the big time. The city isn’t exactly on the same level as other hip-hop havens, and local music lovers seems to be just as fickle as Bost o n sports fans. “The tough thing about Boston is, there’s so much — I don’t know if animosity is the right word — but it’s sort of like our sports teams,” Adams says. “When people are doing well, they’re on your side. When s—t isn’t going so well, they’re not exactly on

your side. As a city, it’s always been a bummer like that because we need to support each other, especially being a smaller city than New York, L.A., or even Chicago and Atlanta.” When local fans are

supportive, though, there’s nothing better than performing for a Boston crowd. “You come home and play a hometown show and it’s the most lit ever,” Adams says. “Being home, you sort of get a pretty good response right away and it sort of dictates the show.” After hitting the road this summer for the Vans Warped Tour and working on a slew of n e w singles, Adams i s excited to return to Boston before heading out for his next slate of gigs. The rapper will join Lil Yachty, Demi Lovato, Big Sean, Gucci Mane, DJ Khaled and more at this year’s Billboard Hot 100 Music Festival in August. Since next month’s fest is in New York, expect Adams to break out his Boston side and troll attendees by wearing Patriots or Red Sox gear. “I always sort of f—k around with them,” he says. “They have a pretty good sense of humor, so we troll each other back and forth, but nothing too serious.”

Feast on fast bites at the New England Food Truck Festival Eat up at this East Coast culinary Coachella. CATHERINE PERLOFF

For those of us who like food that’s high-quality, in high quantity and fast (so, basically, everyone), July 29 and 30 at the Eastern States Fairgrounds will be a weekend to remember. That’s because it’s the site of the New England Food Truck Festival, which includes more than 40 vendors serving up some of the best eats from across the region. According to event organizer Mike Lukas, the New England Food Truck Festival is the largest of its kind on the East Coast, drawing trucks from every state in New England, in addition to New York, New

Jersey and Pennsylvania. Around 20,000 people are expected to attend this year’s fest. Lukas notes that organizers want to make the festival more than just food trucks in a parking lot. To this end, the fest will take over the Eastern States Fairgrounds in West Springfield and offer live music, face painting and games such as corn hole and giant chess. The trucks at the festival are top-notch, as Lukas says he and his co-organizers received more than 200 applications for fewer than 50 spots. The festival team evaluated trucks based

on food quality, fan base, menu items and Yelp reviews. “We want to make sure we only choose the premiere trucks,” Lukas says. Representing Boston will be Curbside Caps, Makin Jamaican, Oath Craft Pizza and Trolley Dog. Look for Cambridge-based Zinneken’s for authentic Belgian waffles and the Roving Lunch Box for a unique menu of sweet and savory hand pies, salads and soups. The festival is also an opportunity to try food trucks from outside greater Boston. Lukas says he was espe-

If you’ve walked by City Hall Plaza recently and noticed Elvis Presley and Nicole Kidman starring back at you from a window, you’re not seeing things. They’re just some of the many celebrity replicas that will be on hand at Boston’s new

Dreamland Wax Museum. Located at 1 Washington Mall, just a short walk from Faneuil Hall, the city’s newest attraction will feature two floors of more than 100 wax figures when it officially opens July 31. Unlike most museums that enforce strict policies against interacting with their exhibits, Dreamland will encourage visitors to get up close and personal with the displays.

“Other museums, you can’t touch them,” says Michael Pelletz, vice president of sales.“We’re going to let people hug them and touch them and you get to take selfies with them.” While the wax museum isn’t a new concept, the new, 18,000 square-foot space is the first of it’s kind in the United State by Dreams Entertainment Group, a Brazilian company that runs dozens of museums across South America

and Mexico. Using techniques that date back to the 17th century, each replica featured takes between four and six months to create by hand, meaning no two figures are alike. According to Pelletz, the museum is putting history at the forefront, which makes sense since the building is located at the old site of Paul Revere and his father’s goldsmith shop. Plus, the area is filled with historical attractions that

date back to the birth of America. “That’s why we picked Boston,” Pelletz says, “The heart of history is here.” The first stop on the museum tour will feature a scenic backdrop of Boston with wax figures of happy locals, followed by a green screen where visitors can take photos with a famous face. “You can say, ‘I went to Faneuil Hall with Madonna,’” jokes Pelletz. Guests will then walk

down a flight of steps to the presidential area, which will include replicas of every single person who’s held the title of Commander in Chief. Profiles for each POTUS are being written by a professor from nearby Suffolk University. Yes, even Donald Trump will be on display in a spot-on recreation of the Oval Office. The area will be one of three special locations in the museum where photos will be taken by staff mem-

more at Boston’s new wax museum bers. “We want to make it look special,” Pelletz says. “If you don’t like him, you can whatever. If you like him, you can hug him. Whatever you want to do.” The history lesson continues with spaces dedicated to world leaders past and present, including Martin Luther King Jr., Nelson Mandela, Mother Teresa, the Pope and members of the British Royal Family. Hollywood greats and

legendary celebrities also have their own areas, featuring names such as Audrey Hepburn, James Dean, Marlon Brando, Marilyn Monroe and Michael Jackson. Modern superstars haven’t been forgotten, so expect to see replicas of Snoop Dogg, Lady Gaga, Katy Perry, Justin Bieber, Beyonce and more when the museum opens. “It flows really nice,” Pelletz says. “People from every generation

are going to find something that they love.” Since Boston loves its sports, athletes will have their own spots too. A boxing ring will be set up featuring the likes of Mike Tyson and Muhammad Ali, while local stars including Larry Bird and Paul Pierce will get in on the action in the basketball display. The wax figures will be rotated in and out on a regular basis, so don’t be upset if your favorite players aren’t there on

opening day. “The New England Patriots will be well represented,” Pelletz says. “The Red Sox will be well represented [too], but not yet.” Heading back up to the top floor, the museum has a large space dedicated to innovators ranging from Albert Einstein to a certain Harvard University dropout named Mark Zuckerberg. After hanging out with the Facebook founder and other tech mavens,

the tour heads to a recreation of Oprah Winfrey’s television studio, where you can get your picture taken with the talk show icon. The tour concludes with spaces dedicated to even more movie stars, including Steven Spielberg, John Wayne, Clint Eastwood and Chuck Norris. The grand finale is a breathtaking ballroom with a lovely chandelier, where you’ll find your favorite local celebrities, Matt and Ben.

“In here will be Matt Damon, Ben Affleck, Ben Stiller, Brad Pitt, Tom Cruise,” Pelletz says. “All the stars will be wearing suits and beautiful gowns.” Attendees will be able to exit through the gift shop, which will have plenty of swag and a few yet-to-be-revealed surprises. “We’re going to be very friendly and welcoming to Boston,” Pelletz says. “Just make it fun for everyone.”

TRANSGENDER POLICY Details of military transgender policy being worked out: White House President Donald Trump’s decision to ban transgender individuals from serving in the U.S. armed forces was a military decision, and the White House will have to work with the Pentagon to decide how to implement the policy, a spokeswoman said on Wednesday. “Implementation of the policy is going to be something that the White House and the Department of Defense have to work together

to lawfully determine and ... I would imagine the Department of Defense will be the lead on that,â€? White House press secretary Sarah Sanders told a brieďŹ ng. U.S. Senate Armed Forces Committee Chairman John McCain on Wednesday said President Donald Trump’s announcement barring transgender individuals from the U.S. military was “unclearâ€? and inappropriate given an ongoing Pentagon study on the issue. “I do not believe that any new

Whether or not you want to admit climate change is real, scientists say the effects of a warming climate are putting sea level rise into hyper drive — a new map predicts most coastal communities in the U.S. will be totally submerged under water by 2100 or at least see regular flooding as a result of manmade climate change. And for Boston, a city that’s built on wood pilings above harbor waters, the future is looking pretty grim. The interactive map by the Union of Concerned Scientists is a companion to their peer-reviewed reported, “When Rising Seas Hit Home.â€? The report spells out the consequences of rising seas levels, showing which coastal communities will be largely submerged by 2100 and which will see regular flooding by that year as a result of human-induced climate change. Regular flooding is defined as occurring at least 26 days out of the year. “In this scenario, global warming is limited to less than 2 degrees Celsius above pre-industrial levels, ice sheets melt more slowly, and sea levels rise less rapidly. By 2100, seas rise by 1.6 feet globally,â€? the scientists write. Though the politics

of climate change might make it seem a lot of people don’t believe that climate change is real, deniers are actually in the minority. Almost 70 percent of Americans think climate change is a real, manmade threat. There is another segment of the population — Boomers and Gen X-ers, we’re looking at you — who don’t believe they’ll have to deal with the consequences of climate change in their lifetime, and on the whole, they’re right. The maps indicate the most serious flooding won’t occur until about 2065. So what can be done? The report outlines what some communities are already doing and what efforts are underway to mitigate the devastating effects of rising tides on coastal areas. For one, Miami has built one of the best water pumping systems in the world to protect its residents despite the fact that its governor has prohibited the term “climate change from being used on official documents. But rather than simply keeping the waters at bay, the scientists suggest nearly 400 at-risk communities could be saved if the country agreed to and acted the terms of the Paris Climate Agreement, an agreement President Donald Trump has backed away from since taking office earlier this year.

Survivors speak out against news that priest convicted of child rape will be released Paul Shanley was one of the first priests to face a trial following a Boston Globe series that uncovered decades of sexual abuse by clergy members. KRISTIN TOUSSAINT After news that Paul Shanley, a defrocked Catholic priest who was convicted of child rape, is set to be released from prison, survivors and family members of those who were abused by him spoke out. Shanley faced trial following the Boston Globe’s Spotlight report on clergy sexual abuse and the Boston Archdiocese’s complicated coverup. He is set to be released from prison on Friday, according to Middlesex District Attorney Marian Ryan’s office. Shanley was convicted in 2005 and has served 12 years for two counts of rape of a child and two counts of indecent assault and battery of a child — though attorney Mitchell Garabedian said he likely has hundreds of

victims, according to his experience in the field. Some of those survivors spoke out at a news conference on Wednesday against the move, which was decided by two qualified examiners. “My biggest concern is that there’s been no rehabilitation of Father Shanley,” said John Harris, an adult survivor who was abused by Shanley. “He is being released into the public soon, and I just want to remind the public that he has abused all ages — children, adolescents, young adults — he has abused women, men and both sexes of children.” The state cannot legally seek that Shanley be confined further without expert testimony declaring that he meets the

criteria for “civil confinement as a sexually dangerous person,” according to the DA’s office. Two doctors have concluded that Shanley does not satisfy that criteria as a sexually dangerous person. “We are here in part as a protest to that decision,” said attorney Carmen Durso, who has represented multiple clergy abuse victims. “We think that Paul Shanley was one of the most dangerous pedophiles that attorneys in this area have seen, and we believe he still continues to pose a threat.” Rodney Ford, the father of a victim whose case led to Shanley’s conviction, was emotional at the news conference. “My son told me years ago that Paul Shanley

won’t die in prison, and he was right,” he said, fighting tears. “Paul Shanley is evil. He destroyed my son’s life, my family’s life and so many other victims’ lives.” Shanley is 86. Attorneys believe the decision to release him was made in part because of his age, though they are not convinced that it would deter him from abusing more children or adults. “Many victims have contacted me who were

abused by Father Paul Shanley. They’re haunted by his release,” Garabedian said, noting that the terms of Shanley’s parole do not include being monitored by a GPS bracelet. “Paul Shanley could be anywhere at any time, sexually abusing and … there’s no magic wand to heal the damage that will be everlasting. We have to act in a manner that will be preventative.” Though it’s unknown right now what commu-

nity Shanley will be in once he is released, Garabedian also encouraged anyone who sees him in public to notify authorities of his whereabouts. Upon his release, Shanley is not allowed to have contact with children under the age of 16 — though Harris revealed that he had been assaulted by Shanley when Harris was 21 years old — and is required to make telephone calls to check in while on probation.

Bristol County jail to replace in-person visits with video calls The Bristol County Sheriff ’s Office said that the move would cut down on the amount of drugs being smuggled in by visitors. KRISTIN TOUSSAINT jacent Women’s Center in about a month. “Number 1, it helps make our operation more efficient, we can cut down on the burden of officers scheduled to work at the secure reception area, he said, noting that could lead to less staff and overtime. “Also, we’re doing this to keep contraband out of our facility. Visitors have attempted to smuggle drugs and other materials into the facility, Darling said, so keeping inmates and visitors in separate buildings would be a deterrent. Attorneys would still be able to visit their clients in person, Darling said. Attorneys and inmates currently meet in a separate conference room to talk and go over legal paperwork and that protocol would not be affected.

Currently, the facility has non-contact visits, said Jonathan Darling, a spokesman for Bristol County Sheriff Thomas Hodgson. Inmates sit behind a plexiglass partition and speak to their loved ones through a phone, which has been the procedure for 20 years, he said. The change would mean visitors don’t even enter the secure visitation area, but instead sit in a separate building on the property and video conference with the inmates. Darling said that a few things prompted the change, which will affect the correction house as well as the ad-

Undiscovered country The hidden gem that is St. Croix won’t remain off the radar for long. JENNIFER LOGUE

If you’re in need of a tropical-island escape, look no further than St. Croix,

the largest and perhaps most undiscovered of the U.S. Virgin Islands. Made up of two main towns on opposite sides of the island (Christiansted on the eastern side and Frederiksted on the western side), its long history of immigra-

tion makes St. Croix a destination teeming with diversity. From beautiful beaches to a blossoming multicultural food scene, here are seven reasons to drop what you’re doing and go to St. Croix right now.

Fruits of St. Croix JENNIFER LOGUE

While St. Croix boasts some of the world’s most pristine beaches, there’s much more to this destination.

Ital in Paradise

U.S. VIRGIN ISLANDS DEPARTMENT OF TOURISM

JENNIFER LOGUE

1. There really isn’t a bad time to go. The U.S. Virgin Islands enjoy warm weather all year, averaging 77°F during winter and 82°F in the summer — and U.S. citizens don’t need a passport to go. “We encourage travelers to visit any time to enjoy our enjoyable, tropical weather,” says Commissioner of Tourism Beverly Nicholson-Doty. “December through April is traditionally the busiest period of the year, but the months between May and November provide travelers with the best value for accommodations.” 2. The beaches are prettier than a postcard. You won’t need any Instagram filters when capturing the beauty of St. Croix’s many beaches. With their soft, white sand leading into clear, turquoise waters, it’s the tropical beach paradise of your dreams (or your desktop image) come to life. While simply relaxing on the beaches is a fine way to seize the day, dive a little deeper with the island’s many snorkeling and scuba tours to see all the colorful fish and coral below the surface. 3. The locals make you feel welcome. If you live on the East Coast, you tend to keep to yourself when walking down the street. In St. Croix, however, everyone says hello to everyone in passing — including strangers. Striking up

conversations with locals is so easy and they’re genuinely glad to chat and share a piece of their world with you. One morning, my tour group got invited to a family reunion on the beach, complete with a pig roast, huge fruit spread and, of course, plenty of rum. Speaking of which... 4. If you love piña coladas, you’ve come to the right place. The piña colada may not have been invented in St. Croix, but they taste really good here and it’s probably due to all the delicious rum being made on the island. The famous Cruzan Rum Distillery is located on its western end and going on a tour is a must as it takes you through each step of the rum-making process with a little history thrown into the mix. To top it off, you get a piña colada at the end. The hardest part is taking that last sip. 5. St. Croix has an incredible food scene. While lounging on the beach with a piña colada sounds like enough of a good time for most of us, St. Croix has quite the food scene as well. Want to eat like a local? Grab some roasted chicken and johnnycakes (fried doughy goodness) at La Reine Chicken Shack. Need some healthier fare? Head over to Ital in Paradise for grilled fish, lentil balls, colorful salads and local fruit juices. Go on the Taste of Twin City food tour for a truly immersive experience.

6. The shopping is hip and local. St. Croix is chock full of privately owned boutiques, so when you make a purchase, you know you’re getting something unique. If your wardrobe could use a splash of color (especially in the island sun), check out Asha for its beautiful silk sundresses and bohemian-inspired accessories. Looking for something you can only find in St. Croix? Go to Sonya ltd. — the home of the original Crucianhook bracelet. In business for over 40 years, all of the bracelets are custom made in sterling silver, 14 karat gold or 18 karat gold. Position the open end of the hook outward if you’re single and towards you if you’re in a relationship. 7. The Centennial Promotion This year marks the 100th anniversary of Transfer Day, when the Danish West Indies became the U.S. Virgin Islands. To celebrate, the Centennial Promotion was launched to bring even more visitors to the islands. Book a minimum three-night stay through Oct. 1, 2017, and you get $300 in credit to spend on anything from historic tours to souvenirs at select retailers and more within the U.S. Virgin Islands. Apply it toward a few rounds of golf at the popular Buccaneer Golf Course, a decadent Italian meal at Un Amore or a day of relaxation at the Hideaway Spa. The options are endless.

How’s this for a blockbuster? OPINION

DANNY PICARD

@dannypicard

The easiest and most logical move for the Boston Red Sox to make, before Monday’s nonwaiver trade deadline, would be to add a veteran arm to the bullpen. But if Dave Dombrowski is looking to get creative, while adding what the team needs and sending a shockwave through his clubhouse in the process, then allow me to be of some assistance. When Chris Sale threw at Manny Machado back in early May, I thought the Red Sox had filled the “leadership” void that was created by David Ortiz’ retirement. But when details emerged from David Price’s latest media confrontation with Hall of Famer and NESN color commentator Dennis Eckersley, it became evident that Big Papi’s absence continues to be a problem that goes beyond offensive production. That’s not to say Sale isn’t a good leader. He is. In fact, he’s still the Red Sox captain, in my eyes. But this team needs a veteran leader who plays every day. And not just plays, but plays at a high-enough level to where it demands the respect of his teammates. Sooner rather than later, that player will be Mookie Betts. But at just 24 years old, he’s no vet just yet. The Red Sox need that veteran AllStar right now, who can immediately step in and become a well-respected presence in the clubhouse. So go get Andrew McCutchen. Recent reports suggest the Pittsburgh Pirates are “leaning toward” not trading McCutchen, who has a $14.75 million club option next season, which still hasn’t been picked up. But that’s where a team like the Red Sox should jump in. McCutchen, 30, is exactly the type of player

Andrew McCutchen could be available at the MLB trade deadline for the right price. GETTY IMAGES

the Red Sox need: a fivetime All-Star, 2013 NL MVP, who would jump right into the heart of the batting order. Question is, as a center fielder, where would he fit? In a perfect world, somebody would take Hanley Ramirez off your hands and McCutchen would become your DH, or you’d move Mitch Moreland and convince Ramirez to once again be the every day first baseman. But none of that is going to happen. That’s where this would turn into a true “blockbuster.” Send Pittsburgh a package that’s built around Price and Jackie Bradley Jr., while eating a good chunk of Price’s salary. But tell the Pirates to throw righty starter Gerrit Cole into the trade. In return, the Red Sox could throw in 2016 first-round pick and lefty starter Jason Groome, along with 25-year-old Blake Swihart and a mid-level prospect.

Cole, 26, is arbitration eligible again in 2018 and 2019. He’s having a down year and has already expressed unhappiness with his low salary in Pittsburgh. Because of that, his name has come up in trade rumors. I’d expect the Pirates to also demand that Red Sox top-prospect Rafael Devers be included in this trade. And I’m here to tell you that I wouldn’t hang the phone up on them if they did. But I’d probably give them an either/or ultimatum with Groome and Devers. However, I would then demand that veteran utility man Josh Harrison be thrown in with McCutchen and Cole, if Pittsburgh chose Devers. So here’s my proposed trade:

GETTY IMAGES

Red Sox receive: Andrew McCutchen, Gerrit Cole (and Josh Harrison if they choose Devers over Groome). Pirates receive: David Price (half of his remaining salary), Jackie Bradley Jr., Jason Groome OR Rafael Devers, Blake Swihart, a mid-level prospect. Seems like a pretty good trade to me, for both teams. The Pirates would

still be able to compete right now while taking care of some looming contract situations, and getting a top prospect for the future. The Red Sox would improve their offense while filling their leadership void, and adding a top-of-the-rotation right-handed arm. I’m not sure what they’re waiting for. Listen to “The Danny Picard Show” at dannypicard.com, iTunes, Google Play, and on the PodcastOne network. Danny can also be heard weekends on WEEI 93.7 FM. Follow him on Twitter @DannyPicard.

Nunez set to make Sox debut The Red Sox have already filled one major need ahead of the MLB trade deadline as they acquired utility infielder Eduardo Nunez from the San Francisco Giants this week. Nunez will likely take over most of the third base duties for the Red Sox. “It’s exciting,” Nunez said, via ESPN. “You’re going to go [play] for a championship. That’s why we’re here. That’s the focus right now.” Nunez has been ripping it up for the Giants of late as he has a .348 batting average since June 1, the fourth best mark in MLB. Nunez is slated to first play for the Sox on Friday night when the team returns home to face the Royals. David Price (5-3, 3.82 ERA) is slated to pitch for the Sox Friday against K.C. MATT BURKE

Run with Ravens With Kenneth Dixon out for the season following surgery on a torn meniscus, the door is wide open for new Ravens running back Danny Woodhead to take over as the PPR back to own in Baltimore. While it’s true that Terrance West will likely get the lion’s share of the early-down work, Woodhead will get a vast majority of

camp, and Woodhead could certainly turn in another 80-catch season as he did in 2015. Woodhead has a very real shot at returning top-15 PPR value, making his current ADP as RB31 an absolute steal.

Meredith all alone Cameron Meredith quietly led the Bears in

receiving in 2016, and there is nothing standing in his way from improving upon all of those numbers (67-8884) in 2017. With former WR1 Alshon Jeffery now with the Eagles, Meredith is the top dog in the Chicago receiving corps. The 6-foot-3 wideout has a much better quarterback situation in addition

to the lack of competition, as Mike Glennon should provide a stable if unspectacular presence under center. If Meredith was able to put up solid numbers with a combination of Jay Cutler, Brian Hoyer and Matt Barkley, he should be able to blow his ADP (currently 113 overall) out of the water in 2017.

Alshon too costly You’ve got to read… “The Southie Pact” written by Kevin Devlin “The Southie Pact” is about the damage that drugs do to ordinary people and to their community. How drugs ruin the lives of those who succumb to their unyielding grasp and the lives of those left behind to suffer the pain. It’s also a story of hope and our faith in each other as we travel through life and face each new day with renewed strength and optimism.

Alshon Jeffery is undoubtedly talented, and he is far better off with Carson Wentz throwing to him than the aforementioned clown car of QBs that the Bears employed in 2016. However, his price has

simply risen too high to warrant taking a shot on early in your draft this year. Jeffery is currently going as the 14th wide receiver off the board, right around the 31st overall pick in standard drafts. That puts him ahead of guys like Demaryius Thomas, Sammy Watkins, Terrelle Pryor and Tyreek Hill. I’m simply not willing to pony up that kind of draft capital for a player who has only started 20 total games over the last two seasons. If Jeffery is still around come round five or six take a shot, but any earlier than that and you should look for a safer option at wide receiver.

The main plot is about a group of teenagers in South Boston, who lose a friend due to a drug overdose, and form a “Pact” not to let this happen again. But life isn’t quite as obliging as they sadly discover in subsequent years. The book is fiction, and although the setting is in Southie, the drug epidemic has caused heartbreak and death in every other community in this nation; and is not just a Southie problem. This book is available in paperback and ekindle on Amazon.com, and at local online bookstores such as Barnes and Nobles. Kevin Devlin grew up in the Savin Hill section of Dorchester, a tight-knit Irish Catholic community. He attended South Boston High School and subsequently received a Bachelor of Science degree (cum laude) and a Master of Arts degree in modern European history from Boston State College. Although his Savin Hill roots remain strong, he eventually married a Southie girl and moved there in 1981.

If you want to voice your true opinions regarding the Red Sox these days, be prepared to be censored d and/or potentially suspended. On the heels of the e David Price-Dennis Eckersley feud that just won’t die, it appears that WEEI host Kirk Minihane was sent on an early vacation because of an anti-Red Sox ownership tirade on Monday (according to the Globe’s Chad Finn). “They are the most pandering organization in America,” Minihane said off the Red Sox. “They’re e pukes. Top to bottom, m, the organization is loaded with pandering ng vomits.” The suspension, or whatever you want to call it, is incredible considering that the Red Sox do not own WEEI. WEEI merely broadcasts Sox games

on radio. No one but your 82-year-old Great Uncle Jack listens to baseball on a transistor, and it’s it s a good bet

without Red Sox games on their airwaves. In 1967 or even 2007 that might not be the case that’ss for — but that sure today. No one cares about the

TT MA

that Minihane’s “Kirk & Callahan Show” pulls in more listeners in a day than Sox games do on 93.7 in a week. In other words, WEEI would survive

“flagship” nonsense. Yeah, there’s plenty of color that Minihane added in the above lashing, but the main point that the Red Sox owners are “panderers” is as accurate as calling the Green Monster

green. This is an organization, after all, that licked the feet of Derek Jeter for 45 minutes on his way out the door. (The Yankees returned favor by giving David Ortiz five minutes of half-hearted love and an oil painting.) The Sox also once had a seven-year anniversary celebration for the 2004 Red Sox, have welcomed back Wade Boggs and Roger Clemens with open arms, and routinely have pregame ceremonies that go about 20 minutes too long. No one would be surprised if there’s a Cesar Crespo Day at Fenway at some point. So, to recap: You can’t accuse the Red Sox of pandering, and you can’t say “yuck” about a player’s stats on a team broadcast. If you do, you’ll either be temporarily taken off the air, or you’ll be embarrassed on a team flight.

TIME TO TRADE ISAIAH? Boston Sports Journal’s Brian Robb wrote this week that he does not believe the Celtics will give Isaiah Thomas a max deal. All indications from Thomas’ camp so far have been that he will in no way settle for a hometown discount. Thomas believes he is The Reason (coined by Metro columnist Danny Picard) the Celtics were able to lure Horford and Hayward to Boston in free agency in the past year, so his ego is healthy. The guy believes he is a max player and will be insulted if he doesn’t make as much or more than Horford and Hayward. If Robb is right and if

Thomas is hell-bent on getting paid, then this thing could end

sooner rather than later. In a relatively similar situation, Ainge traded Rajon Rondo (who was getting max deal buzz prior to being dealt) in December of 2014. If Ainge is convinced a player won’t meet his contract demands, he is not afraid to pull the trigger. The one time you could say he blew it came when Ray Allen jetted in 2012. That’s the reason why these Kyrie Irving for Isaiah trade rumors should not be taken lightly. Irving has an extra year on his deal and will have a cheaper contract than Isaiah in 2018-19. It’s certainly worth exploring.

metro.us/horoscopes Aries Partnership prospects are apparent, but before you get involved, question the value of the connection. Don’t let anyone take advantage of you.

Libra A sensitive situation will mount if you don’t clear the air. Communicating honestly and observing body language will make it easier for you to know your options.

Taurus Mix and mingle. Communication will lead to new friends. Short trips or educational pursuits are favored. Don’t get angry when you should get moving.

Scorpio Listen carefully and don’t form opinions until you have all the facts. Acting on an assumption will get you into trouble. Take precautions while traveling.

Gemini You’ll be tempted by someone pushing an idea, investment or financial package your way. Consider the motives behind the offer before you make a commitment.

Sagittarius A deal will excite you. Get the facts and consider the odds. Don’t take a risk. Get all the details and make a calculated choice based on facts, and figures.

Cancer Make alterations to the way you live or to your home, but stick to a set budget. Don’t let an emotional matter convince you to pay for someone else.

Capricorn Partnerships will need a little tweaking if expectations are not being met. Talks may not be easy, but they will be necessary.

Leo Don’t miss out just because someone is putting demands on your time. Take care of your responsibilities so that you can do the things that you enjoy.

Aquarius A moneymaking opportunity looks good. Explore your options and consider all the angles that will ensure your success. Get the most by focusing on what’s important.

Virgo You’ll be faced with a decision that will affect your personal or professional life. Consider what needs to be done and use diplomacy to find a suitable solution.

Pisces Keep a clear head when dealing with peers. Pick your side of any debate carefully. High energy and enthusiasm will be signs of promise and opportunity. EUGENIA LAST
