bag and pick one. The daughter naturally had three choices as to what she could have done: Refuse to pick a pebble from the bag. Take both pebbles out of the bag and expose the loan-shark for cheating. Pick a pebble from the bag fully well knowing it was black and sacrifice herself for her father’s freedom. She drew out a pebble from the bag, and before looking at it ‘accidentally’ dropped it into the midst of the other pebbles. She said to the loan-shark; “OH, HOW CLUMSY OF ME. NEVER MIND, IF YOU LOOK INTO THE BAG FOR THE ONE THAT IS LEFT, YOU WILL BE ABLE TO TELL WHICH PEBBLE I PICKED.” The pebble left in the bag is obviously black, and seeing as the loan-shark didn’t want to be exposed, he had to play along as if the pebble the daughter dropped was white, and clear her father’s debt. Moral of the story: It’s always possible to overcome a tough situation throughout of the box thinking, and not give in to the only options you think you have to pick from.

New Years Eve

In a small Italian town, hundreds of years ago, a small business owner owed a large sum of money to a loan-shark. The loan-shark was a very old, unattractive looking guy that just so happened to fancy the business owner’s daughter. He decided to offer the businessman a deal that would completely wipe out the debt he owed him. However, the catch was that we would only wipe out the debt if he could marry the businessman’s daughter. Needless to say, this proposal was met with a look of disgust. The loan-shark said that he would place two pebbles into a bag, one white and one black. The daughter would then have to reach into the bag and pick out a pebble. If it was black, the debt would be wiped, but the loan-shark would then marry her. If it was white, the debt would also be wiped, but the daughter wouldn’t have to marry the loan-shark. Standing on a pebble-strewn path in the businessman’s garden, the loan-shark bent over and picked up two pebbles. Whilst he was picking them up, the daughter noticed that he’d picked up two black pebbles and placed them both into the bag. He then asked the daughter to reach into the

Ingredients:
To Make:
• Flour, for dusting the work surface • 1 Flaky Pie Crust (see Game Plan note) • 1 cup packed light brown sugar, dark muscovado sugar, turbinado sugar, or light brown sugar • 2/3 cup light corn syrup or Lyle’s Golden Syrup • 4 tablespoons unsalted butter (1/2 stick), at room temperature, plus more for coating the pie plate • 2 tablespoons dark rum • 3 large eggs • 2 cups pecan halves, coarsely chopped (about 8 ounces) • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract • 1/4 teaspoon fine salt • Slightly sweetened whipped cream or vanilla ice cream, for serving (optional)
1 Heat the oven to 350°F and arrange a rack in the lower third. Coat a 9-inch pie plate with butter; set aside. 2 On a lightly floured surface, roll out the dough to about 12 inches in diameter and between 1/4 and 1/8 inch thick. Without stretching the dough, line the prepared pie plate and trim to leave a 3/4-inch overhang. Fold the overhanging dough underneath itself, crimping the edges with two fingers along the rim of the pie plate to form a high, fluted border. Cover the pie shell in plastic and chill until needed. 3 Place the sugar, syrup, butter, and rum in a large saucepan over medium heat and bring to a boil. Boil for 1 minute, stirring constantly and scraping back in any foam that clings to the sides of the pan. Remove the pan from the heat and set aside to cool to lukewarm, at least 15 minutes. 4 Beat the eggs in a small bowl until the yolks and whites are broken up and incorporated, then beat into the cooled syrup. Add the pecans, vanilla, and salt and stir to combine. Pour into the chilled pie shell. 5 Bake until the filling is set but still slightly wobbly in the center, about 50 minutes. Cool the pie completely on a wire rack. Serve at room temperature with whipped cream or vanilla ice cream, if so desired.

When did Santa Claus begin? How did this wonderful Christmas character who is so giving begin? We didn’t make him up. Saint Nicholas, whose name was changed over the years to Santa Claus, was a real person, a bishop in the church in the fourth century. Saint Nicholas was born in Patara (Asia Minor) and later moved to Myra (Demre in modern Turkey), where he was elected bishop. He died on Dec. 6 sometime between A. D. 326 and 341. Many stories have been told of his generosity. In Saint Nicholas’ time, a young woman had to have a dowry (money or material things which she brought to her husband) before she could be married. It’s a custom we have eliminated in our culture because we believe in the equality of women and men. Saint Nicholas wanted to help a poor nobleman with three daughters, but he wanted to do it anonymously (without

anyone knowing who did it). He didn’t want to be praised for his generosity. He gave for the joy of giving. So, three bags of gold were thrown through the nobleman’s window. However, the nobleman found out who had given the gold for his daughters’ dowries. After that, anonymous gifts of charity often were attributed to Saint Nicholas. This good man also spent several years in prison because of his faith. Many prisoners were converted to the Christian faith by his witness. The stories of Saint Nicholas came to America through the Dutch settlers in the state of New York. He has changed through the years. Originally, he was dressed in his traditional Bishop’s robes. It wasn’t until the 20th century that he began to be dressed in the red and white outfit in which he appears to us now in the persons of his many “helpers.” In fact, in 1874, the American cartoonist Thomas Nast drew him in a brown suit with brown fur trim.
Dr. Clement C. Moore, a professor of Greek and Biblical Studies at General Theological Seminary of New York, wrote “A Visit from St. Nicholas” (more commonly know as “Twas the Night Before Christmas”) in 1822. Only eight reindeer pulled Santa’s sleigh until the song “Rudolph, the Red-Nosed Reindeer” was written. Jesus, (the Messiah) is the most important person in the Advent/ Christmas season. However, since Saint Nicholas conveys a spirit of generosity and love, we remember him and we too give gifts. Because Saint Nicholas gave us such a good example of helping the poor, Santa Claus may well be a healthy part of our celebrations. As Allan Hauck wrote in Calendar of Christianity, If Santa Claus has become too commercial, too secularized, perhaps it is “because we have forgotten his historical origin in the beloved Bishop of Myra who obeyed Christ’s command that we help all those who are in need.”

Philippines Reasons The
Should Be In
Your Future
There’s an incredible chain of tropical islands in the Pacific that is sprinkled with pink, white and black sand beaches, ultra-relaxing luxury resorts, charming countrysides and villages, exotic foods and an enticing nightlife. You know it exists, but you’ve probably never thought of planning a trip there. We’ve listed the top 5 reasons why you should start to plan a trip to this beautiful getaway.
SIGHTS
The Philippines is made up of more than 7,000 islands, only a thousand of which are inhabited. Within those 7,000 islands, there is a mind-blowing collection of natural wonders: more than 1,000 Chocolate Hills, numerous underground rivers and caves, 2,000-year-old rice terraces carved by ancient islanders, many pristine beaches with magnificent limestone formations, crazy-colorful coral reefs, one of the world’s deepest ocean trenches and more than 20 volcanoes, including the world’s “most perfectly-formed volcano.”
BEACHES
An abundance of shoreline comes with having thousands of islands, and most of the beaches in The Philippines are relatively non-tourist-ridden. There are pink beaches, black beaches, and blinding white beaches. Some are surrounded by lush green mountains; others, tall rock formations. If you’re into it, there are also worldclass surf spots. It’s the stuff dreams are made of.
FOOD
Filipino food might not be for everyone, but if you don’t try good quality Pinoy cuisine, you’re selling yourself short. Seafood is an obvious staple, as is soy sauce, vinegar, rice, pork, and noodles. The tastes can vary from spicy and tangy sinigang, sweet and savory pork adobo, to crunchy crispy pata, and even peanut buttery kare-kare.

HIKING
It’s an outdoor adventurer’s dream. Hike up Taal Volcano, up to an ancient rice terrace, to the Tukuran waterfalls, or wander through mountains and forests in Cordilleras on the island of Luzon.
DIVING
Philippine waters have a number of unique spots for a tour of the underwater world. Malapascua Island is a diving hot spot with four different shipwrecks to explore, and we hear through the grapevine that Apo Island and Balicasag Island are uncrowded and have incredible reefs and diving. And we can’t forget one of the islands’ more popular attractions: swimming with whale sharks, the ocean’s gentle giants!

What Are Yo
Do you think it's possible that fear could be the primary factor in determining whether or not you succeed in any given endeavor? I submit to you that it's not only a possibility but a probability. It may seem like there are more "traditional" roadblocks in your way, but that is very often merely an appearance and not the actual reason why people fail to attain their dreams. One of the reasons why fear is not seen as the culprit is because we tend to think of fear in terms of being afraid to fail at something. However, fear of SUCCESS is often just as much of a factor, if not more so. Let's look at a few examples in order to illustrate this point:
1: WHEN
IT COMES TO LOSING WEIGHT OR
GETTING IN SHAPE, ARE YOU AFRAID OF FAILURE, OR ARE YOU AFRAID OF SUCCESS?
The fear of failure seems fairly evident. You are afraid that you will not succeed because you have tried many times in the past but still haven’t seen the results that you are looking for. You may also be afraid of not having the proper training or supervision in order to effectively create health improvements, or you may be afraid that you are going to get hurt. Those are all common concerns when it comes to physical fitness, but what about being afraid of what succeeding would actually mean to you? You would have to exercise on a daily basis, maybe even every day. You would have to eat healthy foods, and very carefully monitor the type and amounts of foods that you ingest each day. Every day you would have to dedicate an hour or more of your time to exercising and preparing healthy foods. You would have to be dedicated to your fitness program over the longterm and stick to that program. That sounds like an awful lot of work, and not very much play! In fact, success in your attempts to lose weight or improve your health sound very much like something that you might even be afraid to try, for fear of having to give up on the things that you enjoy doing.

Most people are afraid of failure in this regard because of traditional reasons; their job doesn’t pay enough, they have too many bills to ever save any significant amount of money, they don’t have enough time to bring in extra income, etc. Once again, those might be valid concerns, but what about being afraid to succeed? If you were financially successful, you would gain a lot of responsibilities! Paying a lot of money in taxes
ON MAKEING PROCESS."
is certainly on the list of things that might be afraid of. Managing whatever successful business endeavor that allowed you to become successful could also be causing you some anxiety about succeeding financially. Leaving the “comfort zone” that you have known all of your life is definitely scary! You may be broke right now, but at least you know where you stand, right? Once again, fear of having to actually do what it takes to Succeed could be keeping you from making an honest effort to have the money that you think you want so very badly!
3:
AND
FINALLY,
RELATIONSHIPS.
LET’S
TALK
ABOUT
WHO HASN’T BEEN AFRAID OF
THE POTENTIAL OUTCOME OF A RELATIONSHIP AT SOME POINT IN THEIR LIFE? On one hand, the fear of failure is definitely there. You are afraid that the "one" person for you simply doesn't exist. You may be afraid that you will be rejected because you aren't attractive, successful, or entertaining enough. Maybe you are afraid that no one will want you because you have a disability, children from a previous marriage, or maybe you have a chronic condition that you feel makes other people stay away. Some powerful fears there to be sure, but let's look at the fear of actually Succeeding in a long-term relationship: You may be afraid of "settling down" with one person and giving up the freedom to date others or to spend time with people that you are interested in. You may be afraid that you will have to be responsible on a daily basis once you start interacting frequently with another person, or with that person's children. For that matter, you may be afraid that you will have to give up some of the attention that you get from your own children, or that you may have to share responsibility for them with someone else. You may be afraid to get into a long-term relationship because you'll have to start keeping your significant other informed about what you do, and when you'll be home.
HOME MMessage ESSAGE TakeTAKE Home Whether you are talking about a fear of successful health or weight loss, being afraid to actually make the kind of money that you want to make, or simply being scared about the possible outcome of a truly successful long-term relationship, one thing is very clear - YOU need to get clear! If you don't get clear of the fears that are keeping you from being successful, then guess what? You never will be what you want to be! Your fears will keep you exactly where you are right now in your life, and 30 or 40 years from now, you will still not have any of the things that you were too afraid to successfully pursue. Don't let fear keep you down - whether it is the fear of failure or the fear of Success. Decide what you want, and then go out there and make it happen. In the end, you'll be glad that you did!

The Man Behind it All
Born in Fresno, California on May 17, 1899, Delbert Eugene ”Del” Webb was a true pioneer and revolutionary leader in active adult living. Dropping out of high school to be a carpenter’s apprentice, Webb proved to be a man with a mind of his own. The Del Webb Construction Company, which he founded in 1928, expanded to 12 states in under a decade. In 1960, Webb’s innovative vision of the first retirement community in the United States became a reality with the immensely successful Sun City, Arizona. This ground-breaking achievement earned him the cover story in the August 1962 edition of Time Magazine. Webb passed away in 1974, leaving a legacy of loyalty and respect to guide the distinguished company which carries his name.
A SAFE AND HAPPY NEW YEAR’S EVE FOR PETS While many of us enjoy New Year’s Eve celebrations, some of the festivities can be frightening to our animals. Fireworks and other loud events can be startling and confusing to pets. The stress can even increase the risk of them getting spooked and then running away. Please read these safety precautions to ensure your pet has a safe and happy New Year.
EXERCISE AND FEEDING Exercise your pet during the day, including playing games, going for a long walk, or a trip to the dog park. A couple hours after you are finished, feed your pet a full meal. Tired and satisfied pets will be more relaxed and less anxious. Your pet’s favorite treats can help to distract them as well. Try freezing bone broth in an ice cube tray- pets will keep occupied licking the healthy frozen cube.
Pg. 12
LIFESTYLES
ARRANGEMENTS Keep pets indoors during firework displays, preferably in a safe, escape-proof room or crate. Close curtains, windows and doors. Put the television, radio, or a white noise machine on at a comfortable level for distraction from the loud noises. Gather your pets favorite toys as playing can be another means of distraction and is also quality time together. If your pet seeks comfort hiding under a bed or in a quiet place, let them stay there and come out when they are ready. Stay home with your pet if possible or consider hiring a pet sitter.
A TRIP TO YOUR VETERINARIAN If your pet historically stresses on New Year’s Eve and gets anxious frequently, consider scheduling a visit with your Veterinarian or a Veterinary Behaviorist or Trainer who can recommend safe options to help your pet cope. I also recommend acupuncture as a safe and effective way to treat many behavior issues. Before trying any remedy, always consult with your veterinarian first.

IS IT TIME TO HAVE ‘THE TALK’ WITH YOUR AGING PARENTS?
STEPS TO MAKING THE RIGHT DECISION • Be Informed. Gather as much information about the senior’s condition and situation as possible. • Schedule a Family Conference. Meet together as a family with your parent to honestly and openly discuss the “what if ’s” of aging. • Listen. Learn the preferences, wishes and feelings of your parent about housing, health, finances, insurance, legal documents, crisis care, long-term care and end-of-life issues.
By Elizabeth Moss, Caregivers by WholeCare This holiday season is not only a time for festivities but is often the one time during the year that the whole family comes together. The holiday season is also when many adult children may notice, for the first time, their parents aren’t able to do as much as they used to or are perhaps a bit more forgetful. Often these concerns go unspoken and ignored until a crisis is at hand—but it doesn’t have to be that way. There’s a second choice and people who study aging call it ‘the talk.’ No matter how old you are, talking to your parents about their long-term care needs and finances is just plain uncomfort-
able for everyone involved. The parent may be resistant to sharing information with their “kids” or may even be unaware that they need help. And, across the board, it’s hard to acknowledge that with aging may come a loss of independence and a role reversal when the child becomes the caregiver. According to the Centers for Disease Control (2005), 60 percent of people say that making sure their family is not burdened by tough decisions is “extremely important,” but more than half of them have NOT communicated their end-of-life wishes.

For 20 years, families in Middle Tennessee trust Caregivers by WholeCare to provide compassionate senior care for their loved ones. Learn more at http://caregiversbywholecare.com/.

• Set Goals. Identify available resources to enrich your parent: spiritually, physically, socially, intellectually and emotionally. Be mindful of helping to maintain their independence as long as possible. • Make Decisions. Help maintain a level of control that is practical, while hearing concerns and fears from your parent as well as input from other family members. • Stay Flexible. Though the unexpected is inevitable, have confidence in your team and know you are not alone. To help prepare for ‘the talk’ get informed with available resources. AARP has a very helpful booklet that goes into detail on how to get started. You can download Prepare to Care: A Resource Guild for Families. Another great local resource is The Council on Aging. Their resource guide Aging and Caring: Things Families Need to Know is now available online.
