Catching Fireflies It was a Summer evening about 6 years ago. I was rocking my baby boy in my arms and when he fell asleep I put him gently down into his crib for the night. My wife worn out from a long day of work was half napping and half watching TV in the living room. Not caring for the show I poured myself a glass of iced tea in the kitchen, took a lawn chair off our porch, and walked into the front yard to gaze at the stars. As soon as I stepped onto the yard I heard the sweet sound of laughter drifting through the air. In the lot next to our house the neighbor’s children were chasing fireflies, hoping to catch one in a mason jar. I sat down in my chair and watched them for awhile. As fast as they ran, though, they couldn’t seem to catch the slow moving lightning bugs. Finally, exhausted they both sat down in the grass and just watched the little guys flying through the air,

blinking their lights on and off. I sipped my tea and joined them in their awe and appreciation. It felt so good getting to see one of God’s many miracles lighting up my front yard on a warm, Summer night. It made me feel a bit closer to the Divine and a part of something far greater than myself. Over the years since then, I have appreciated and enjoyed all of the glorious light in this world. I have taken it into my heart and welcomed it into my soul. I have found it in nature, books, music, animals, prayer, and most of all in the lives of those around me. I have never tried to catch this light, however. I have learned that true light and true love must come from within. It must flow freely between us and can’t be captured in a jar. The next time you see some fireflies then, take a seat and enjoy their light. Let them remind you to shine your own light as well. Let them remind you to fill your life with the brightness of your love. Let them remind you that you too are one of God’s miracles in this world.

BBQ Shrimp New Orleans Style

Ingredients: 2 lbs head-on shrimp, large 2 Tbsp Creole Seafood Seasoning 1 Tbsp olive oil 1 large head garlic, peeled and minced 2 Tbsp chopped fresh rosemary 3 Tbsp Worcestershire sauce 3 Tbsp hot sauce 1 lemon, juice removed, quartered (reserve the juice) ½3 cup beer (Abita Amber if available) Salt and pepper to taste 1 stick butter, room temperature

To Make: • Preheat large sauté pan over high heat. • Season shrimp with ½ of Creole Seafood Seasoning and lightly toss. • Preheat a large skillet over high heat, put the oil in the pan, and heat until the oil begins to smoke. Place garlic and rosemary in the pan and stir to brown garlic. Be very careful not to burn. • Add shrimp and carefully stir. • Add Worcestershire, hot sauce, lemon juice and lemon quarters. • Deglaze with beer, stirring to release any bits clinging to the bottom, and boil the mixture to reduce while shaking the pan. Allow shrimp to cook 2 to 2½ minutes (timing will depend on size) and add remaining Seafood Seasoning and salt and pepper to taste. When shrimp are finished cooking, the liquid will have a sauce consistency. Reduce heat to medium high and add butter. Sauté until butter is emulsified and sauce is thick. Adjust seasoning. Remove lemon quarters. Serve with French bread, lots of napkins, and finger bowls. Garnish each serving with a lemon piece.

Note: You need to have head-on shrimp because the fat content in the body is what gives this dish some of its flavor. Make sure the shrimp are fresh. Check color, smell, and attachment of head and legs. Because of the weight of the head and shells, one pound yields only about 8 oz. of meat. This dish is cooked very fast, so preparation is key. It is critical that the garlic is not burned while cooking the shrimp.

STEPS TO OPTIMUM NUTRITION Being active and eating right becomes crucial as we get older. By making the right lifestyle decisions and getting the right nutrients, you can reduce the risk of developing various age related prob-

1. EAT FOODS RICH IN ANTITOXIDANTS

The wider the range of colors on the plate, the better the array of nutrients. Studies have shown that elderly people who ate five or more servings of fruits and vegetables each day had a 39% lower risk of stroke and angina than those who did not.

lems. While there is no guarantee that having a healthy lifestyle will keep all diseases away, these dieting tips will certainly improve your physical and emotional well-being:

2. INCLUDE SOLUBLE FIBER IN YOUR DIET

Soluble fiber, found in oat bran, beans, whole grains, and all vegetables and fruits will help to improve your digestive functions and rid your body of toxins.

4. GO FISH

Fish is one of the healthiest foods on the planet. Fish are loaded with important nutrients such as protein, Vitamin D, and Omega-3 fatty acids, which are important for your body and brain. Eat seafood twice a week and include fatty fish such as salmon, trout, sardines, tuna or mackerel.

5. DRINK MORE WATER

The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) recommends that you have of 3 cups of dairy daily. If you cannot tolerate milk, try small amounts of yogurt, hard cheese or lactose-free foods. Calcium can also be found in dark leafy vegetables, flaxseeds, sesame seeds, and legumes.

Healthy living is about healthy choices. When food shopping, always opt for the foods that are lower in sugar, sodium and calorie count. In addition, when you opt for whole grains over refined foods containing white flour or rice, you easily increase your intake of important nutrients such as zinc, magnesium and fiber. Pg. 4

LIFESTYLES

Raw foods contain biologically active components called enzymes. Enzymes play an important role in the all metabolic activities, the chemical reactions that transform energy and matter in your body.

6. GOOD FAT OVER BAD FAT

Don’t wait until you are thirsty to drink water. For adults, 8 glasses of water are recommended daily. Instead of reaching for coffee, soft drinks, or alcohol, choose unsweetened tea (to also protect the brain from vascular damage and degeneration), low fat milk, or 100% fruit juice.

7. DON’T FORGET CALCIUM

3. CONSUME RAW FOODS

Saturated fats, found in animal foods, and trans fats found in margarine or store-bought baked goods should be avoided entirely. Choose instead poly and monounsaturated fats, found in seeds, nuts, avocados, and fatty fish like salmon. According to numerous nutrition studies, it is best to use coconut, olive or nut oils over seed or vegetable oils.

These 7 guidelines will not only reduce your risks for developing chronic diseases such as high blood pressure, diabetes, hypertension, heart disease as well as age related deterioration; they will also help you enjoy living a healthy life. Sailing Yacht Vacation

An ocean cruise regardless of the destination is great for those that want to relax and unwind. But if you don’t like mixing in with the crowd, perhaps you should settle for something more private like a sailing yacht vacation. A sailing yacht vacation is ideal because you are able to personalize it. You can choose to rent one on your own if you know how to sail but for those who don’t know anything about sailing, you can get a package that already has a skipper and even a cook for the entire trip. The nice thing about having a crew on board is that they are familiar with the territory so they can Pg. 6

act as your tour guide, plan your itinerary, and prepare your food. You should know that having some extra hands on board will cost you extra but it is worth it. Unlike riding in a big ship, you can charter the whole yacht so you are the only passengers throughout the entire voyage. There are three types to choose from namely the power yachts, the sailing yachts and the multihull yachts. You can charter a sailing vacation just about anywhere since there are a lot of companies that offer their services. Most of these are available in tropical destinations. You can try some at the

British Virgin Islands, in Florida, Caribbean Islands, the South Pacific, the Med and in Asia. A sailing yacht vacation is great because it is more relaxed. You can wake up at any time and take a dip in the ocean before moving on to your next destination. If you don’t feel like going anywhere, stay right where you are. But before you charter a yacht, do some research first about the companies that offer this and don’t be afraid to ask questions. You will surely find some through the web or in major sailing magazines. You can also ask friends who have gone on sailing yacht vacations in the

Debrras Welborn Roge

“I don’t want to be 75, saying ‘I wish I had tried that’. I did hear from those who thought that I was just a dreamer and none of those dreams would work out. What I say now is “find a way to work your dreams”. Many people were well meaning and didn’t want me to be hurt, but others didn’t want to be left behind. I had to move on from those people. These words, spoken with a passionate heart teeming with intensity, did not come from a life coach, a counselor, or a philosopher. They came from Debra Rogers Welborn, now on the other side of a life full of great highs and deep lows—what we all experience to some extent. But the difference between Debra and most of us is that she didn’t let the naysayers drive the direction of her life. This vibrant actress, model, singer, performer, wife and mom, set a single eye on her dreams before she started school. “I always knew I wanted to be an actor.” Call-

the white cotton curtains that would blow from the air of the attic fan—no air conditioning then—and with mom in the middle of the big bed and all the kids around her, reading those Little Golden Books. Cinderella, Snow White, and the fairy tales--these captured Debra. Sometimes when Mom would get tired and maybe skim over some of the story, Debra would always catch her: “oh no-no-you skipped a page!” At the age of 3 she could recite the books from memory and would do so, word for word, for company. She loved to sing and act, and as a “little skinny thing” she loved to dress up each year when it was time to watch the Miss America Pageant. Mom would stuff the station wagon with the neighborhood kids and make popcorn and a big jug of lemonade and take them to the drive-in. In those days you always got 2 movies when you went, and the kids usually fell asleep after the first one. Not Debra. She and mom would

“60 today is not what it was for my parents or grandparents. I’m not nearly ready to retire. I see a new chapter. Success is different at every stage of life. watch the second and then sometimes the first again, even making up happy endings when the movie had a sad one. Once mom started taking her to musicals, there was no turning back and the star that had been born now headed high to the sky that could make her shine. Some of her musical interest likely came from Dad early on as well, who played the piano. Debra recounts her first big break—which came at the age of 6. Singing and acting in a one-act play competition titled Fudge and a Burglar, she remembers singing two songs, one of which was “Puff the Magic Dragon” sung to two scared younger siblings. From there, thanks to Mr. Crook (“the choir director for her high school and the Methodist church down the street) Debra landed lead parts in his musicals and his special singing group. Everyone loved Mr. Crook, so much so that on Senior Skip Day students gladly skipped all their classes except his.

A loving family, wonderful parents, opportunity, and endless encouragement, it seemed to reflect the Wally and June Cleaver life that represented the perfect American family in that era. And then darkness fell. Not understanding why her throat seemed to be constantly bothering her to the point where she couldn’t sing at her brother’s wedding, she went to see an ENT. At the age of 24 she heard the last words she ever expected to hear: vocal-chord cancer. “Looking back, it was one of the biggest blessings God ever gave me. But at the time, I thought, What do you mean? I feel fine and I’m young! This can’t be! Once the initial shock passed, two things kept Debra going. One was her love for her parents. “I knew they felt horrible, and I wanted to make them feel better.” Six weeks of deeply painful daily radiation made her aware of how short life can be. “You know, you learn more in a valley than on a mountain.”

In that valley with the cancer also rested the recent death of her best friend from birth. In the ICU for a week following a car accident, Debra was sure her friend would recuperate. When she didn’t, Debra resolved: I will live for me and her both (and later named her own daughter after her friend). Once Debra recovered, she realized the brush with death had taken away her fear of pursuing a career. Working at an HR job, one of the photographers said she looked good on camera and did she model? “When I found out how much I could make being a model I said sign me up!” Her coworkers kindly made a portfolio for her and sent it to an agent who signed her right away and landed her some very lucrative work with Mary Kay Cosmetics and a couple of national commercials. Then, they asked if she would like to do some extra work on the hit TV show Dallas. There she met producer Leonard Katzman via a bold move to ask permission to take pictures on the set with her Kodak camera. He agreed as long as he wasn’t filming. “I was too green to be nervous. He asked me to do a cold read—I didn’t even know what that was until I took classes later—and he told me I had great instinct.”

eye while she was still in Texas (I saw him singing one night—oh my), they both believed that a long distance relationship would not work. But that first spark grew into a fire that weathered separations, eating spam and beans, and all the ups and downs of the life of an artist. “We did our craft first, then lived on nothing.” Four weeks before their wedding, her appendix burst, and she almost died from an allergic reaction to an antibiotic. Trying to pursue her career for the next 8 years in LA and New York while hubby was in Nashville, Debra one day realized “I didn’t get married to live somewhere else. I packed my bags and came to Nashville” to be with my husband. “I feel like God blessed me because I did the right thing. I wanted to do what He wanted me to do. He sent me work in Nashville that I didn’t know existed!” At one time, she was the spokesperson for 25 car dealerships all over the country and was able to spend a lot of time raising her daughter. “60 today is not what it was for my parents or grandparents. I’m not nearly ready to retire. I see a new chapter. Success is different at every stage of life. These days I enjoy my family, friends, and working on projects that mean something to me.

She landed a part opposite Steve Kanaly (Ray Krebbs) and met all the Ewings while filming the annual barbeque shindig…including Patrick Duffy (Bobby Ewing), whose part in one episode required that he do the Cotton Eyed Joe. But there was a problem: He didn’t know that dance. Debra stepped up and taught him. After strong encouragement from Mr. Katzman, Debra moved to LA where he helped her land an agent the first week she was in town. She did modeling and commercial work through the prestigious Wilhelmina Agency, landed a national commercial for A-1 Steak Sauce and a part on The Love Boat her first month in town. She then went on to beat out 1500 girls who tried out for a Dick Clark movie which was landed her a spot on The Tonight Show with Johnny Carson. Debra had found success through her travels and work in Dallas, LA and New York—but not yet a satisfied love. Though her now-husband TW Hale (singer, writer, producer) had caught her

This next chapter has begun with some great opportunities. I was able to land a part in a movie that will open nationwide on August 25 called “All Saints”. It’s a true story that took place here in Tennessee and has a great cast with John Corbett and Barry Corbin. This film shows how God can work miracles…. in His way. I saw a rough cut of the film and it is so very good. I’m also writing a book and working on some business opportunities as well. I want people to know that there is nothing accidental or random about our lives. Jeremiah 29:11 says “For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the LORD, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.” Life is good and one of the great things about life after 55 is this….all the experiences and knowledge earned from all those years has given me a grateful heart and a joyful attitude because I know the end of the story.

Success Secrets Of The Simple Minded

by: Aaron Potts

Whether we like to admit it or not, most of us have a common misconception that people who are truly successful in life have some sort of gift or skill, or that they were given some kind of incredible break or opportunity during their life that allowed them to achieve their incredible success. The secret to true and lasting success is that we simply need to get out of our own way and permanently bury the self-limiting beliefs that have been keeping us from our dreams for all of these years!

Success Secret #1

Every single person who ever achieved or maintained success in this world first had a clear picture in their mind of what that success looked like. You have to know exactly what you want to do in your MIND before it can ever manifest and become a part of your actual existence. Do you think that the people who build skyscrapers say “Let’s just throw a bunch of concrete and steel together and see how high we can make it”? No, they envision a beautiful tower of architectural superiority in their mind, and then they start working out a plan of how to make it happen. Although your goals may not be as far-reaching as a 100-story building downtown, the process begins in exactly the same place - in your mind.

Pg. 12

LIFESTYLES

Success Secret #2 Success Secret #3

You must BELIEVE that you can accomplish your goal! You would think that something as simple as that would go without saying, but the sad truth of the matter is that most people are brought up to believe that they are limited by what is realistically possible. In fact, the more time you spend learning about the state of affairs in the world at large, as well as in your own neighborhood, the more you will become conditioned to believe that you can only accomplish certain things because “that’s just the way it is”. Nothing could be further from the truth! As a wonderful and glorious human being, the only true skill that you have to have to succeed is a burning desire to accomplish whatever it is that you want to accomplish! History is replete with examples of wildly successful people who attained their success not via expensive college educations or unlimited financial resources, but rather because they simply refused to give up until they had found or created a way to achieve their dreams.

No one who ever achieved any lasting success ever did so by sitting at home studying the long lost secrets of other successful people. It doesn’t matter if you are talking about following the path of wealthy business men and women, tracking the health practices of people with picture-perfect bodies, or just cracking the code of someone who has mastered gloriously fulfilling relationships. Your ability to memorize their master plans will do you absolutely no good whatsoever if you do not get up and take action on what you have learned. If you want to achieve success in any endeavor in your life, you will have to put a powerful plan of action in place in order to make it happen, and stick to that plan over the long-term, rather than just the shortterm. Know what you Want - Believe that you can have It - Take consistent action to attain It

There is a bright side to the empty nest syndrome – more living space with more time to enjoy it. No longer confined to working those long hours that were required to raise your family, now you can relish the opportunity to enjoy your home, inside and out. The key to enjoying this new way of living is to expand your entertainment space while keeping your home low maintenance. Whether buying

or remodeling an existing home, the 55 plus generation are opting more for open floor plans, lower cabinetry and walk in pantries. Also popular additions are adaptable lighting features and integrated home technology that can be controlled by a smartphone. And with more and more traditional indoor activities moving outdoors, here are suggestions for year round enjoy ment...

SPRING

Let nature lead the way when creating an outdoor space. Make sure you plan for the sunny and shady areas as well as nighttime breezes. Take into account how your space will blend in with surrounding plants and flower beds while also making sure you allow for multiple power outlets and plumbing access. If you are near a road, consider putting in a water fountain or pond to shield the noise.

SUMMER

FALL

WINTER

Before you can enjoy Fall and football outdoors, make sure your walls can support the weight your of a wall-mounted TV. You will also want to plan for the location of the power and cable outlets. For the full tailgating experience, add an outdoor kitchen, complete with refrigerator, grill and sink.

Your outdoor space can become a great refuge from sun and rain with proper planning. Make sure that you have proper airflow and the ability to block the sun with window treatments or shutters. Another essential is to have power and plumbing installed in order to accommodate an outdoor refrigerator and/or ice maker. There is nothing like enjoying a cold beverage on a hot day!

Winter is dark and cold, so you make sure you incorporate landscape lighting and up-lighting in order to fully enjoy your outdoor living space. To make sure your space is warm and cozy, add space heaters (electric or gas) or a fire pit.
