Think Out of the Box

In a small Italian town, 100s of years ago, a small business owner owed a large sum of money to a loan-shark. The loan-shark was a very old, unattractive looking guy that happened to fancy this man’s daughter. He decided to offer the businessman a deal that would completely wipe out the debt he owed him. However, the catch was that we would only wipe out the debt if he could marry the businessman’s daughter. Needless to say, this proposal was met with a look of disgust. The loan-shark said that he would place two pebbles into a bag, one white and one black. The daughter would then have to reach into the bag and pick out a pebble. If it was black, the debt would be wiped, but the loan-shark would then marry her. If it was white, the debt would also be wiped, but the daughter wouldn’t have to marry the loan-shark. Standing on a pebble-strewn path in the businessman’s garden, the loan-shark bent over and picked up two pebbles. Whilst he was picking them up, the daughter noticed that he’d picked up two black pebbles and placed them both into the bag. He then asked the daughter to reach into the bag and pick one. The daughter naturally had three choices as to what she could have done: Refuse to pick a pebble from the bag. Take both pebbles out of the bag and expose the loan-shark for cheating. Pick a pebble from the bag fully well knowing it was black and sacrifice herself for her father’s freedom.

She drew out a pebble from the bag, and before looking at it ‘accidentally’ dropped it into the midst of the other pebbles. She said to the loan-shark; “Oh, how clumsy of me. Never mind, if you look into the bag for the one that is left, you will be able to tell which pebble I picked.” The pebble left in the bag is obviously black, and seeing as the loan-shark didn’t want to be exposed, he had to play along as if the pebble the daughter dropped was white, and clear her father’s debt. Moral of the story: It’s always possible to overcome a tough situation throughout of the box thinking, and not give in to the only options you think you have to pick from.

Simple Tips on..

PL ANNING A R ETI R EMENT The moment we all have been waiting for RETIREMENT! Now, lets plan the party! These days we are all looking for ways to cut costs and let’s face it parties can be expensive but this day is just as important as your wedding day, birth of a child, or even your birthday, Its your retirement party! The average luncheon retirement party at a nice venue, with over 35 guests typically costs $2000 or more. The average luncheon retirement party at your home, with 35 guests typically costs $800 or more. There is hope, you can significantly cut these costs and plan a great retirement party with a modest budget. Lets discuss how you can plan a retirement party on a budget.

Simple Tips on Retirement Party Planning

#1 Make a budget. How can you stay within your budget if you don't know what your budget is? The first step to planning a retirement party on a budget is to figure out how much money you have for the party. Make a list of your anticipated costs and expenses. #2 Evaluate your expense list and shop around. For example, some venues have packages that include food and drinks, which maybe a better option than buying everything on your own.

PA RTY

#3 Planning your party mid-week. The largest cost in any function is the venue and food. Most venues are not as busy mid-week and may offer lower pricing. Ask about rates for different dates. This can reflect significant savings in your budget. #4 What can you trim? Figure out what expenses are neccesary. For instance, can you plan a luncheon instead of a dinner party? Can you invite less people? Can you cater the party yourself ? Can you cut down on paper goods or choose less expensive ones? #5 Start preparing early and shop around. You should shop around to find the best prices. This includes shopping online and offline. End of season sales will offer discounts on paper goods and decorations. In many instances, you simply have to be willing to ask for the discounts and in many instances, they will be given to you. After all, just about everything is negotiable. Planning a retirement party doesn't have to be a difficult or there are cost effective ways to plan your party. Simply know your budget, evaluate your expenses, do price comparisons, trim down on miscellaneous costs. Once you do this, you can rest assured that you'll have a great retirement party that doesn't break the bank.

for a Holiday

Dinner?

Most people will consume enough food at their holiday dinner that could fuel them for a 2 day hike in the mountains. But who’s counting calories during the Holidays right? As you enter the holiday season, you usually don’t think about the discomfort that follows a big holiday meal. Let's see what goes on in your body through the 24hrs following the celebration.

5-10 MINUTES INTO THE MEAL:

Your first sip of alcohol begins to absorb rapidly into the bloodstream. It dilates blood vessels, particularly the capillaries under your skin, making you feel warm and fuzzy. Most of the alcohol is absorbed in the small intestines.

20 MINUTES:

It takes 20 minutes for your brain to send the “Full” signal from the gastrointestinal tract. The average stomach capacity is around one liter. By this time, you have probably overeaten. If you are talking and laughing you are most likely eating and drinking too fast and will swallow excess air.

Food & Wine by: Michelle Carollo

30 MINUTES:

Now the food is starting to raise up your blood sugar levels. Your pancreas kicks into action and will start producing the hormone insulin. The resulting drop in your blood sugar levels makes you feel overwhelmingly tired.

1 HOUR:

To help with Digestion, more blood flows to the digestive tract. Your heart rate and body temperature slightly increase making you feel sweaty and more tired. If you have had a rich meal the food is harder to process. Not to mention alcohol slows your digestion even more.

2 HOURS:

That heavy meal rich in protein and fat is still sitting in your stomach. Now you are feeling bloated and flatulence may be triggered when the body’s enzymes can’t deal with certain substances, such as the complex sugars found in cabbage and brussels sprouts.

3 HOURS:

This is how long it takes to digest that one glass of wine….but I am sure you have had more than that!

6-8 HOURS:

It takes six to eight hours for food to pass through the stomach and the small intestine, before reaching the large intestine.

24 HOURS:

Your hangover, largely caused by the diuretic nature of alcohol that dehydrates you, will have eased by now . Your body is finally ready to start eliminating undigested food, after absorbing the needed water and minerals. The rest, well... will be stored as excess fat.

3 Reasons These Islands Should Be In Your Future

There’s an incredible chain of tropical islands in the Pacific that is sprinkled with pink, white and black sand beaches, ultra-relaxing luxury resorts, charming countrysides and villages, exotic foods and an enticing nightlife. You know it exists, but you’ve probably never thought of planning a trip there. We’ve listed the top 3 reasons why you should start to plan a trip to this beautiful getaway.

Beaches

Sights

An abundance of shoreline comes with having thousands of islands, and most of the beaches in The Philippines are relatively non-tourist-ridden. There are pink beaches, black beaches, and blinding white beaches. Some are surrounded by lush green mountains; others, tall rock formations. If you’re into it, there are also worldclass surf spots. It’s the stuff dreams are made of.

Food

Filipino food might not be for everyone, but if you don’t try good quality Pinoy cuisine, you’re selling yourself short. Seafood is an obvious staple, as is soy sauce, vinegar, rice, pork, and noodles. The tastes can vary from spicy and tangy sinigang, sweet and savory pork adobo, to crunchy crispy pata, and even peanut buttery kare-kare.

Pg. 10

LIFESTYLES

The Philippines is made up of more than 7,000 islands, only a thousand of which are inhabited. Within those 7,000 islands, there is a mind-blowing collection of natural wonders: more than 1,000 Chocolate Hills, numerous underground rivers and caves, 2,000-year-old rice terraces carved by ancient islanders, many pristine beaches with magnificent limestone formations, crazy-colorful coral reefs, one of the world’s deepest ocean trenches and more than 20 volcanoes, including the world’s “most perfectly-formed volcano.”

Consider the following: • The United States has one of the highest divorce rate rates in the world. The divorce rate is almost 50% for first marriages; 67% for second marriages; and 73% for third marriages.

So what does this have to do with your estate plan? Well, as it turns out, a lot! Traditional estate planning would have you leave everything to your surviving spouse, and on the death of that spouse, then to the children. That worked fine when families were solid, divorces were rare, and life expectancy was shy of 70 years.

Using yesterday’s estate planning techniques in today’s world can lead to unexpected, sometimes disastrous outcomes. For example: • A surviving spouse leaving her assets (including those she inherited from her first husband) to her second husband, or to the children of a second marriage, thus circumventing the first spouse’s intentions and denying his children their intended legacies. • A child commingling his inheritance with his spouse’s assets, then losing half of his inheritance when the marriage ends in divorce. • Being disqualified from means-tested governmental benefits because no one planned for assisted living or nursing home care. • Enduring an expensive and emotionally wrenching interdiction proceeding because no provision was made in the event a parent became incapacitated. All of these issues can be effectively addressed with the proper, well-thought-out estate plan, but a solid estate plan takes time, effort and commitment, and it should not be taken lightly. To learn more, don’t hesitate to call or email me, and I will send to an invitation to one of our upcoming free workshops.

HELPFUL TIPS ON...

Choosing the Right Wine at a Restaurant by: Michelle Carollo

One of the most confusing steps in a restaurant is choosing the correct wine with your meal. Selecting the right one can be the best parts about dining out. However, navigating the wine list can be daunting. - The wine list can range in difficulty from being straightforward to complex and challenging. You don’t have to be a sommelier to navigate any wine list like a pro. - Here are just a few tips to point you in the right direction. Pg. 12

LIFESTYLES

1: START LIGHT

Starting a meal with a bold glass of Cabernet Sauvignon can completely ruined your appetite. This is a common mistake by many who believe they only enjoy rich red wines. Ordering a heavy glass of wine in the beginning will make the meal hard to get through. Light courses are normally served at the beginning of the meal, this wine and food pairing simply doesn’t work. We suggest the best option when choosing wines to start a meal off with is to stick with something light, crisp and refreshing.

2: STAY AWAY FROM “BY THE GLASS”

Try not to be tempted by the convenience of ordering a “glass” of wine as opposed to purchasing an entire bottle. This may not work for those who dine alone often, in which case ordering an entire bottle could be excessive. However, if you’re in good company, you may want to consider purchasing a bottle vs. the “by the glass” option. You’ll save quite a bit of money, and possibly get yourself a better wine, as most offerings available by the glass tend to be mid-range and may not be fresh.

3: TASTING NOTES

If you are not entirely familiar with the wine world, deciphering which glass to order from a list of fancy grape or vineyard names can cause a bit of anxiety and apprehension. Don’t succumb to the confusion of the fancy grape names, most modern wine lists will feature tasting notes for each offering. Utilize these guidelines to coincide with the mood you feel to drink. If there are no tasting notes listed on the menu, no worries, simply ask your server to explain the nuances of each wine you are interested in. Ask which dishes they’ll pair best with.

6: IF ALL ELSE FAILS, ASK FOR HELP

Sure, who doesn’t want to be able to navigate a wine list without help, but in the end, the most important thing to focus on is ordering the right bottle. Sometimes, you may have to ask a professional who can guide you through the ordering process. If a sommelier is available ask for their help and learn from them. Sommeliers are trained specifically to help diners choose the perfect wine for pairing with food.

4: FOOD SHOULD BE YOUR GUIDE

When looking over the list don’t just choose what sounds most appealing to drink at that moment. Remember the wine you order alongside a meal must complement the food properly. If the pairing is incorrect, both the wine and the food being eaten will suffer as a result. Don’t order the a sweet white wine, for example, if you’re planning on sinking your teeth into a rich, Osso Bucco. Choose wines that are versatile and will stand up to multiple different courses. This way you will avoid having to order different wines throughout your meal.

5: DON’T ALWAYS FOCUS ON PRICE

If you think ordering the most expensive bottle of wine on the list is the answer, you’re not alone. This is a common mistake of many. Ordering based solely upon price point thinking it will be the best wine, is one of the biggest mistakes that you can make. Markups on bottles of wine at restaurants can be somewhere as much as 300%. A similar range of quality and taste can be found in mid-priced bottles of wine. Many times, you won’t even be able to tell the difference between a $30 bottle and a $100 bottle.

THE NEXT TIME YOU ORDER A BOTTLE OF WINE WITH YOUR DINNER, DON’T LET THE LIST INTIMIDATE YOU, SIT AND ENJOY THE EXPERIENCE. ORDER WITH CONFIDENCE, SIT AND ENJOY YOUR MEAL.

When did Santa Claus begin? How did this wonderful Christmas character who is so giving begin? We didn't make him up. Saint Nicholas, whose name was changed over the years to Santa Claus, was a real person, a bishop in the church that lived in the fourth century.

Saint Nicholas was born in Patara (Asia Minor) and later moved to Myra (Demre in modern Turkey), where he was elected bishop. He died on Dec. 6 sometime between A.D. 326 and 341. Many stories have been told of his generosity. In Saint Nicholas' time, a young woman had to have a dowry (money or material things which she brought to her husband) before she could be married. It's a custom we have eliminated in our culture because

Pg. 14

LIFESTYLES

we believe in the equality of women and men. Saint Nicholas wanted to help a poor nobleman with three daughters, but he wanted to do it anonymously (without anyone knowing who did it). He didn't want to be praised for his generosity. He gave for the joy of giving. So, three bags of gold were thrown through the nobleman's window. However, the nobleman found out who had given the gold for his daughters' dowries. After that, anonymous gifts of charity often were attributed to Saint Nicholas. This good man also spent several years in prison because of his faith. Many prisoners were converted to the Christian faith by his witness. The stories of Saint Nicholas came to America through the Dutch settlers in the state of New York. He has changed through the years. Originally, he was dressed in his traditional Bishop's robes. It wasn't until the 20th century that he began to be dressed in the red and white outfit in which he appears to us now in the persons of his many "helpers." In fact, in

1874, the American cartoonist Thomas Nast drew him in a brown suit with brown fur trim. Dr. Clement C. Moore, a professor of Greek and Biblical Studies at General Theological Seminary of New York, wrote "A Visit from St. Nicholas" (more commonly know as "Twas the Night Before Christmas") in 1822. Only eight reindeer pulled Santa's sleigh until the song "Rudolph, the Red-Nosed Reindeer" was written. Jesus, (the Messiah) is the most important person in the Advent/Christmas season. However, since Saint Nicholas conveys a spirit of generosity and love, we remember him and we too give gifts. Because Saint Nicholas gave us such a good example of helping the poor, Santa Claus may well be a healthy part of our celebrations. As Allan Hauck wrote in Calendar of Christianity, If Santa Claus has become too commercial, too secularized, perhaps it is "because we have forgotten his historical origin in the beloved Bishop of Myra who obeyed Christ's command that we help all those who are in need."

Do you think it's possible that fear could be the primary factor in determining whether or not you succeed in any given endeavor? I submit to you that it's not only a possibility but a probability. It may seem like there are more "traditional" roadblocks in your way, but that is very often merely an appearance and not the actual reason why people fail to attain their dreams. One of the reasons why fear is not seen as the culprit is because we tend to think of fear in terms of being afraid to fail at something. However, fear of SUCCESS is often just as much of a factor, if not more so. Let's look at a few examples in order to illustrate this point...

1: WHEN

IT COMES TO LOSING WEIGHT OR

GETTING IN SHAPE, ARE YOU AFRAID OF FAILURE, OR ARE YOU AFRAID OF SUCCESS?

The fear of failure seems fairly evident. You are afraid that you will not succeed because you have tried many times in the past but still haven’t seen the results that you are looking for. You may also be afraid of not having the proper training or supervision in order to effectively create health improvements, or you may be afraid that you are going to get hurt. Those are all common concerns when it comes to physical fitness, but what about being afraid of what succeeding would actually mean to you? You would have to exercise on a daily basis, maybe even every day. You would have to eat healthy foods, and very carefully monitor the type and amounts of foods that you ingest each day. Every day you would have to dedicate an hour or more of your time to exercising and preparing healthy foods. You would have to be dedicated to your fitness program over the long-term and stick to that program. That sounds like an awful lot of work, and not very much play! In fact, success in your attempts to lose weight or improve your health sound very much like something that you might even be afraid to try, for fear of having to give up on the things that you enjoy doing.

Pg. 16

LIFESTYLES

2: WHAT

ABOUT FINANCIAL INDEPENDENCE?

DO

SUCCESS MIGHT PLAY A FACTOR IN THAT PART OF YOUR LIFE? YOU THINK IT IS POSSIBLE THAT FEAR OF

Most people are afraid of failure in this regard because of traditional reasons; their job doesn’t pay enough, they have too many bills to ever save any significant amount of money, they don’t have enough time to bring in extra income, etc. Once again, those might be valid concerns, but what about being afraid to succeed? If you were financially successful, you would

gain a lot of responsibilities! Paying a lot of money in taxes is certainly on the list of things that might be afraid of. Managing whatever successful business endeavor that allowed you to become successful could also be causing you some anxiety about succeeding financially. Leaving the “comfort zone” that you have known all of your life is definitely scary! You may be broke right now, but at least you know where you stand, right? Once again, fear of having to actually do what it takes to Succeed could be keeping you from making an honest effort to have the money that you think you want so very badly!

3:

AND

FINALLY,

RELATIONSHIPS.

LET’S

TALK

ABOUT

WHO HASN’T BEEN AFRAID OF

THE POTENTIAL OUTCOME OF A RELATIONSHIP AT SOME POINT IN THEIR LIFE? On one hand, the fear of failure is definitely there. You are afraid that the "one" person for you simply doesn't exist. You may be afraid that you will be rejected because you aren't attractive, successful, or entertaining enough. Maybe you are afraid that no one will want you because you have a disability, children from a previous marriage, or maybe you have a chronic condition that you feel makes other people stay away. Some powerful fears there to be sure, but let's look at the fear of actually Succeeding in a long-term relationship: You may be afraid of "settling down" with one person and giving up the freedom to date others or to spend time with people that you are interested in. You may be afraid that you will have to be responsible on a daily basis once you start interacting frequently with another person, or with that person's children. For that matter, you may be afraid that you will have to give up some of the attention that you get from your own children, or that you may have to share responsibility for them with someone else. You may be afraid to get into a long-term relationship because you'll have to start keeping your significant other informed about what you do, and when you'll be home.

Take Home Message Whether you are talking about a fear of successful health or weight loss, being afraid to actually make the kind of money that you want to make, or simply being scared about the possible outcome of a truly successful long-term relationship, one thing is very clear YOU need to get clear! If you don't get clear of the fears that are keeping you from being successful, then guess what? You never will be what you want to be! Your fears will keep you exactly where you are right now in your life, and 30 or 40 years from now, you will still not have any of the things that you were too afraid to successfully pursue. Don't let fear keep you down - whether it is the fear of failure or the fear of Success. Decide what you want, and then go out there and make it happen. In the end, you'll be glad that you did!

"UNDERSTAND FEAR, LEARN TO IDENTIFY IT, & NEVER LET IT BE A PART OF YOUR DECISION MAKING PROCESS."

Reverse Mortgages... Reverse Your Way of Thinking

Let’s face it, most consumers have a strong negative bias against the Reverse Mortgage Line of credit based exclusively on the product name itself and driven by preconceived notions and misunderstandings about it. Among all strategies available to seniors ages 62 and older who are planning for a secure and financially stable retirement, the reverse mortgage has historically been seen as a last resort. However in today’s recent economy, the three traditional sources of retirement income—savings, pensions and Social Security benefits—aren’t always enough to enable older adults to live the retirement they imagined. A recent study by the Insured Retirement Institute showed that only 54% of baby boomers currently have retirement savings, the lowest recorded in the seven years of their Boomer reports. Of that, only 23% of them believe they will have enough money to last throughout their retirement. Considering the US Census Bureau reported that 80 million Baby Boomers will be retiring in the next two decades, this could create a large looming concern for older Americans. Among other concerns, the National Council on Aging recently reported that 91% of older homeowners are also worried about rising medical expenses and more than half are concerned with having the financial resources to maintain their home considering 80% wish to stay in their current home as long as possible. The ability for older

Pg. 18

LIFESTYLES

adults to retain their homes and have familiar living situations are keys to their quality of life and capacity to live independently. Studies show the continued expansion of the older population will increase the need for affordable, accessible housing that is well-connected to services that are well beyond what current supply can meet. In addition, the home is an increasingly important setting for the older community to allow long-term care, a trend likely to grow over the next two decades as millions more seek to remain in their current dwellings while coping with disabilities and health challenges. At Gulf Coast Bank and Trust Co, we have taken the initiative through our long term care seminars along with our reverse mortgage seminars to provide our customers with the proper tools to make the best decision for their financial futures in preparation for these concerns. We know that each customer is unique and believe it is our responsibility as a community bank to educate our customers with the most objective up-to-date information available. Considering the US Census Bureau reported that home equity represents 60-80% of total net worth of 80% of adults aged 65 along with recent federal legislation and the implementation of stricter underwriting standards which led to a number of positive advancements to the program, it is important to consider the full potential of a reverse mortgage product as a means of serving

varying financial needs of older homeowners. Between the home refinance option and the home purchase option available on a reverse mortgage line of credit, consumers have more choices than ever before to leveraging home equity as a retirement resource.

Book Club Corner Liz Maddox: This month, we’re going to do

It’s an adorable book about friendly dragons who are invited to a party to eat tacos! It’s fun, and the illustrasomething a little different. Barbara:

My recommendation is T he Bayou Fairies by Cher Levis Hunt. This keepsake book welcomes your grandchild to a whimsical fairyland set in the swamps and bayous of southeast Louisiana. Each boy or girl fairy is linked to the flora and fauna of our area. Think magnolias, blue herons, honeysuckle, raccoons, and even poison ivy. My granddaughter particularly enjoys the beautiful illustrations. I love the book because it’s a way for me to introduce an out-of-state grandchild to the special beauty and environmental lessons of her dad’s childhood home. T he Really Weird Jungle are colorful, original and unique in their own “weird” way, but what makes them the same is what makes this children’s book one to remember. The book is reminiscent of Dr. Seuss with its sing-song rhymes and fantastic pictures, but has its own special magic sure to capture any child (or adult’s) heart! A perfect example of the story’s rhymes: “Murks hide in caves where there isn’t much light, and Floops try to fly, though they can’t, but they might.” Mike Artell’s book certainly makes you feel like you might fly, but it’s okay if you can’t. We are all part of his “really weird jungle.” The book was written and illustrated by Mike Artell, who lives in Covington, LA. His book Petite Rouge—A Cajun Red Riding Hood, was named 2009 Read Aloud Book of the Year.

T he Big Orange Splot by Daniel Manus Pinkwater is my favorite grandchild book. Mr. Plumbean lives on a “neat street” where all the houses look the same. One day, a seagull flies by and splashes orange paint on his house. Instead of repainting it, Mr. Plumbean decides to change his entire house to look like his dream. His neighbors join forces to try to get him to change it back to look like all of their houses, but he converts them, and the whole neighborhood is transformed!

Marlene:

My grandsons love Along a Long Road by Frank Viva. It’s an exciting book with artwork that transports the reader on a bicycle ride through the city. My boys like to use their fingers tracing the bicyclist’s route as he speeds along. Another winner is the humorous It’s a Book by Lane Smith. Both grandsons chuckle as our protagonist tries to explain that he wants to read his book. Flip a Saurus by Sara Ball is fun for the dinosaur-loving child. With the flip of their fingers, they create new kinds of dinosaurs by mixing and matching body parts. And finally, T he Lego Ideas Book will keep your budding builder inspired to create. Balance and Falls

There are some simple adjustments you can make to prevent falls:

What You Can Do to Prevent Injury How do you know if you have good balance? You are able to control and maintain your body’s position while moving or remaining still; you can walk without staggering; get up from a chair without falling; climb stairs without tripping; and bend over without tumbling. When you do not maintain good balance, you are at risk for falling. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), more than one out of four older people fall each year, but less than half tell their doctor. It is also estimated that one out of every five falls result in a serious injury, such as broken bones or a head injury. Additionally, falls are the most common cause of a traumatic brain injury (TBI). Although falls are more common in older adults, they are not solely due to the effects of aging. Falls can be prevented. There are a number of risk factors that increase with age, but they can be changed or modified to prevent falls. The majority of falls are due to a combination of risk factors, such as lower body weakness accompanied with vision changes.

Exercise regularly. It will make you stronger and improve your balance and coordination.

Have your vision checked at least once a year by an eye doctor.

Talk to either your doctor or pharmacist about medications you take, even if they are overthe-counter medicines, which may make you dizzy or drowsy.

Wear shoes inside and outside the house. Avoid going barefoot or wearing slippers.

In addition, there are several changes you can make at home to prevent falls: BATHROOMS

Put a non-slip rubber mat or self-stick strips on the floor of the tub or shower.

• Install grab bars inside the tub or shower and next to the toilet. KITCHEN

Move items you use regularly to the lower shelves of upper cabinets.

• If you must use a step stool, get one with a bar to hold on to. Never use a chair as a step stool. STAIRS AND STEPS

Pick up things that are on the stairs. Always keep the stairs free from clutter.

• Fix loose or uneven steps. • Install an overhead light and light switch at the top and bottom of the stairs. • Make sure the carpet is firmly attached to every step, or remove carpet and attach non-slip rubber treads on the stairs. • Fix loose handrails or install new ones. Make sure handrails are on both sides of the stairs and are the same length as the stairs.

LIGHTING

• •

Replace incandescent bulbs with fluorescent or LED bulbs. Install additional lighting if necessary.

• Add nightlights so you can see where you are walking. Nightlights that turn on by themselves after dark are available. • Place a lamp in arm’s reach of the bed. FLOORS

Make sure you have a clear path through each room in your home.

• Remove area rugs. • Always keep the floor free from clutter. • Coil or tape cords and wires next to the wall so you cannot trip over them. Install additional outlets if necessary.

Senior Medicare Patrol (SMP) would like to alert Medicare beneficiaries, their family members and caretakers, of a new scam we’ve recently been informed of. Apparently, based on the news that new Medicare cards and numbers will be issued soon, scam artists are calling people posing as employees from Medicare or other government agencies, telling them that new cards are being issued and that for them to continue receiving benefits, the agency must “verify” or “update” identifying information. This includes their Medicare number and birth date and in some cases even financial accounts. Don’t be fooled. This is a scam to steal your personal information, money and possibly your identity. Here is some information you need to know: • Social Security number absent Medicare cards will be issued to new and existing beneficiaries from April 2018 to December 2019. • Medicare will not phone you asking you for personal information. This includes your Medicare number. Nor does Medicare email or visit your home unannounced to “verify” or “update” information it already has. • If you get a suspicious phone call, simply say, “I don’t give out personal information over the phone,” and hang up. • Report your experience at 1-877-272-8720 or go to www. stopmedicarefraud.org.

A SAFE AND HAPPY NEW YEAR’S EVE FOR PETS

While many of us enjoy New Year’s Eve celebrations, some of the festivities can be frightening to our animals. Fireworks and other loud events can be startling and confusing to pets. The stress can even increase the risk of them getting spooked and then running away. Please read these safety precautions to ensure your pet has a safe and happy New Year.

EXERCISE AND FEEDING

A TRIP TO YOUR VETERINARIAN

Exercise your pet during the day, including playing games, going for a long walk, or a trip to the dog park. A couple hours after you are finished, feed your pet a full meal. Tired and satisfied pets will be more relaxed and less anxious. Your pet’s favorite treats can help to distract them as well. Try freezing bone broth in an ice cube tray- pets will keep occupied licking the healthy frozen cube.

If your pet historically stresses on New Year’s Eve and gets anxious frequently, consider scheduling a visit with your Veterinarian or a Veterinary Behaviorist or Trainer who can recommend safe options to help your pet cope. I also recommend acupuncture as a safe and effective way to treat many behavior issues. Before trying any remedy, always consult with your veterinarian first.

HOUSING ARRANGEMENTS

SAFETY

Keep pets indoors during firework displays, preferably in a safe, escape-proof room or crate. Close curtains, windows and doors. Put the television, radio, or a white noise machine on at medium volume for distraction. Bring out favorite toys as playing can be another means of distraction and is also quality time together. If your pet seeks comfort hiding under a bed or in a quiet place, let them stay there and come out when they are ready (cats especially). Stay home with your pet if possible or consider hiring sitter. Diffuse essential oils– lavender can be calming to pets and people.

Have your pet microchipped and make sure your contact information is current along with ensuring your pet has a current identification tag. Check your yard and keep pets away from all fireworks including the used remnants that fall on the groundthey can be toxic! As always, keep pets away from table scraps and avoid feeding them holiday foods. Make sure livestock and horses are secured in a fenced area away from loud noises.

To Make:

1 Heat the oven to 350°F and arrange a rack in the lower third. Coat a 9-inch pie plate with butter; set aside. 2 On a lightly floured surface, roll out the dough to about 12 inches in diameter and between ¼ and ⅛ inch thick. Without stretching the dough, line the prepared pie plate and trim to leave a ¾ inch overhang. Fold the overhanging dough underneath itself, crimping the edges with two fingers along the rim of the pie plate to form a high, fluted border. Cover the pie shell in plastic and chill until needed. 3 Place the sugar, syrup, butter, and rum in a large saucepan over medium heat and bring to a boil. Boil for 1 minute, stirring constantly and scraping back in any foam that clings to the sides of the pan. Remove the pan from the heat and set aside to cool to lukewarm, at least 15 minutes. 4 Beat the eggs in a small bowl until the yolks and whites are broken up and incorporated, then beat into the cooled syrup. Add the pecans, vanilla, and salt and stir to combine. Pour into the chilled pie shell. 5 Bake until the filling is set but still slightly wobbly in the center, about 50 minutes. Cool the pie completely on a wire rack. Serve at room temperature with whipped cream or vanilla ice cream.
