COUCH POTATOES MAY HAVE SMALLER BRAINS LATER IN LIFE

Stem Cells Can Repair the Heart

Poor physical fitness in middle age may be linked to a smaller brain size 20 years later, according to a study published in the online issue of Neurology®, the medical journal of the American Academy of Neurology. The researchers who published the study from Boston University School of Medicine found a direct correlation between poor fitness and brain volume decades later, which indicates accelerated brain aging.

SOCIAL NETWORKS ARE IMPORTANT AS EXERCISE & DIET

The more social ties people have at an early age, the better their health is at the beginnings and ends of their lives, according to a new study by the University of North Carolina. The study is the first to definitively link social relationships with concrete measures of physical well-being such as abdominal obesity,

inflammation, and high blood pressure, all of which can lead to long-term health problems, including heart disease, stroke and cancer. The study analyzed data from age groups ranging from teenagers to seniors, and found that people who had more social ties at a young age were healthier later in their life and that social ties are just as important for an individual’s health as exercising and healthy eating. The study also found that for older adults, social isolation has a significant effect on the development of high blood pressure.

LOWER STRESS WITH MEDITATION

Numerous studies show that meditation, a practice that focuses attention on the breath and mental activities, can be used to help people with cardiovascular disease reduce their stress and lower their blood pressure. Stress increases a person’s heart rate and blood pressure, and experiencing stress over a long period of time can have negative effects on the body. There are various meditation methods that may appeal to different types of people. Meditation can involve sitting quietly for 10-30 minutes each day or a few days each week, and can also incorporate movement, such as in tai chi. While meditation is not a substitute for medications and other kinds of self-care, it can be incorporated alongside other lifestyle changes to promote heart health.

A SMART CONTACT LENS MAY HELP PREDICT DISEASE PROGRESSION IN GLAUCOMA PATIENTS WALKING REDUCES HEART RISK AS MUCH AS RUNNING

6 ∙

A contact lens with a built-in sensor could help determine which glaucoma patients have a higher risk of disease progression, according to a new study. Researchers from Columbia University Medical Center found certain patterns of electrical signals emitted from the “smart” contact lenses correlate with a faster rate of glaucoma progression. The findings are being published online in Ophthalmology, the journal of the American Academy of Ophthalmology.

Brisk walking can reduce a person’s risk of diabetes, high blood pressure, and high cholesterol just as much as running can. The finding came from a new study published in the journal Ar teriosclerosis, Thrombosis and Vascular Biology which examined 33,060 runners in the National Runners’ Health Study and 15,045 walkers in the National Walkers’ Health Study. During the six-year study period, the investigators discovered that the same energy used for moderate intensity walking and vigorous intensity running

lead to comparable reductions in the likelihood for diabetes, high blood pressure, and potentially coronary hear t disease. Paul T. Williams, Ph.D., leading author and staff scientist at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory, Life Science Division in Berkeley, Calif., said: “Walking and running provide an ideal test of the health benefits of moderate-intensity walking and vigorous-intensity running because they involve the same muscle groups and the same activities performed at different intensities.”

A recent study from Cedars-Sinai Heart Institute in Los Angeles suggests that stem cells may, indeed, heal damaged hearts. The researchers treated 17 heart attack survivors with an infusion of stem cells taken from their own hearts. A year later, the amount of scar tissue had shrunk by about 50%. These results sound dramatic, but are they an indication that we’re getting close to perfecting stem cell therapy? “This is a field where, depending on which investigator you ask, you can get incredibly different answers,” says Dr. Richard Lee, professor of medicine at Harvard Medical School and a leading expert on stem cell therapy. “The field is young. Some studies show only modest or no improvement in heart function, but others have shown dramatically improved function,” he says. “We’re waiting to see if other doctors can also achieve really good results in other patients.” Studies are producing contradictory results partly because researchers use different methods to harvest and use stem cells. Some are taken from the bone marrow of donors, others from the recipient’s own heart. It’s not clear which approach works the best. “Some investigators think this is just a few years away,” says Dr. Lee. “And then there are others who feel that there is much more work to be done.”

with a positive mindset you can not only inspire yourself, but also others in your TFW practice as well. Today’s story is about removing the word “quit” from your vocabulary. This is the story of two frogs. One frog was always saw the bad side of things and the other was more optimistic. One day, while searching for food, they inadvertently jumped into a vat of milk. They couldn’t get out, as the sides were too slippery, so they were just swimming around. The one frog said to the other frog, “Brother frog, there’s no use paddling any longer. We’re just going to drown, so we might as well give up.” The positive frog replied, “Hold on brother, keep paddling. Somebody will get us out.” And they continued paddling for hours. After a while, the negative frog said, “Brother frog, there’s no use. I’m becoming very tired now. I’m

just going to stop paddling and drown. It’s Sunday and nobody’s working. We’re doomed. There’s no possible way out of here.” But the other frog said, “Keep trying. Keep paddling. Something will happen, keep paddling.” Another couple of hours passed. The negative frog said, “I can’t go on any longer. There’s no sense in doing it because we’re going to drown anyway. What’s the use?” And the frog stopped. He gave up. And he drowned in the milk. But the hopeful frog kept on paddling. He kicked and squirmed and kicked and squirmed, until at last, all his churning about in the milk had turned the milk into a big hunk of butter. The butter was now solid enough for him to climb onto and get out of the Vat! The Moral of The Story? “Never Give Up!” At TFW, we like to use the phrase inspired by TFW Helsinki: HALLUSSA. This is defied as “I Got This!”

WHAT ARE THE HEALTH BENEFITS ASSOCIATED WITH N-3 FAS? There’s strong evidence that n-3 FAs reduce the risk of sudden cardiac death. This is different than chronic coronary artery disease resulting in a heart attack due to blocked coronary arteries. Sudden cardiac death is usually caused by an arrhythmia resulting in abnormal heart muscle contractions. In a recent prominent medical study, modest fish consumption (n-3 FAs) was associated with a 52% lower risk of sudden cardiac death. Metabolic syndrome is a combination of medical disorders that increase the risk of developing cardiovascular disease and diabetes. Some experts estimate one in five people will suffer from metabolic syndrome and the risk increases as we get older. N-3 FAs have a direct effect in lowering triglycerides and reducing blood pressure, thus lowering one’s risk for metabolic syndrome. Xylitol is all natural, not an artificial chemical like aspartame, sucralose, and splenda. It can be found in berries, fruit, vegetables, and mushrooms. Xylitol resembles sugar in consistency and taste, but has a third fewer calories and is a great sugar alternative for diabetics. Xylitol can be safely used as a sugar substitute in most sugar-free recipes. Stevia is a unique plant native to the areas near the rain forests of northeastern Paraguay. Stevia contains glycosides which are compounds within the leaves that give them their sweet taste. Glycosides are neither absorbed nor assimilated therefore there is no insulin response rendering stevia a zero on the glycemic index. In contrast, Splenda has a glycemic index of 80, sugar has a glycemic index of 70, meaning Splenda spikes insulin levels more than sugar does! Stevia is safe for both diabetics and hypoglycemics and is a remarkable sweetener for any beverage. Stevia is also excellent for both cooking and baking.

Dandelion extract contains powerful diuretic compounds called taraxasterol that increase the secretion of excess water. Dandelion is one of the most popular natural diuretics. It also works as an anti-inflammatory agent and natural treatment for high blood pressure. Potassium Aspartate is a potassium salt that is essential for maintaining fluid and electrolyte balance throughout the body. Potassium is an essential mineral responsible for a wide variety of metabolic functions. As an electrolyte, it aids in the maintenance of enzyme structures and fluid balance. Potassium also regulates muscle contractions, heart rate, and blood pressure. Vitamin B6 is essential in balancing sodium and potassium levels in the body and is also responsible for the production of monoamine neurotransmitters such as adrenaline, serotonin, and dopamine. Juniper berry is primarily known as a botanical support for healthy kidneys, bladder, urine flow, prostate, and urethra, as well as overall genitourinary tract health in both men and women. The diuretic action of the juniper berry is attributed to its essential oil, especially terpinene-4-ol, which is said to accelerate the filtration activity of the kidneys. When combined, all of these ingredients can help reduce the amount of subcutaneous (under the skin) fluid in the body. Subcutaneous fluid can reduce the appearance of lean muscle definition and leave a smooth, flat appearance to one’s physique. Habits Linked to a Long Life (Backed by Science!)

by: Alina Petre, MS, RD by: Alina Petre, MS, RD

1. EAT SOME NUTS

Nuts are nutritional powerhouses. They’re rich in protein, fiber, antioxidants and beneficial plant compounds. Nuts are also a great source of several vitamins and minerals, such as copper, magnesium, potassium, folate, niacin and vitamins B6 and E. When it comes to old age, a recent study observed that subjects who consumed at least 3 servings of nuts per week had a 39% lower risk of premature death. Adding some nuts to your daily food intake may keep you healthy and help you live longer. 2. EAT PLENTY OF HEALTHY PLANT FOODS

Consuming a wide variety of plant foods, such as fruits, vegetables, nuts, seeds, whole grains and beans, may decrease disease risk and promote longevity. For example, many studies link the Mediterranean diet to a lower risk of premature death. It’s also been linked to a reduced risk of cancer, metabolic syndrome, heart disease, depression and brain deterioration. These effects are attributed to plant foods being rich in a variety of nutrients and antioxidants, including polyphenols, carotenoids, folate and vitamin C. Accordingly, several studies link vegetarian and vegan diets, which are naturally higher in plant foods, to a 12–15% lower risk of premature death. 3. EXERCISE AND BE PHYSICALLY ACTIVE

It should come as no surprise that staying physically active can keep you healthy and add years to your life. The minimum amount needed to reap the benefits, such as an additional 3 years of life, may be as little as 15 minutes per day. However, people reaching the 150 minute recommendation were 28% less likely to die early. What’s more, people who exercised beyond that had a 35% lower risk of death during the study period. 4. DON’T SMOKE

Many people think life expectancy is largely determined by genetics. However, it seems that genes play a much smaller role than originally believed. Instead, environmental factors like diet and lifestyle are thought to be the key determinants. Here are 7 things you can do to increase the chances of seeing your 100th birthday.

Smoking is strongly linked to disease and early death. Overall, men and women who smoke may lose up to 10 years of their lives and be three times more likely to die prematurely than those who never pick up a cigarette. Fortunately, it’s never too late to quit. One study reports that individuals who quit smoking by 35 years of age may prolong their lives by up to 8.5 years. Furthermore, quitting smoking in your ’60s may add up to 3.7 years to your life. In fact, quitting in your ’80s may still even provide benefits.

5. KEEP YOUR ALCOHOL INTAKE MODERATE

Heavy alcohol consumption is linked to liver, heart and pancreatic disease, as well as an overall increased risk of early death. However, moderate consumption is associated with a reduced likelihood of several diseases. Wine is thought to be particularly beneficial due to its high content of polyphenol antioxidants. To keep consumption moderate, it is recommended that women aim for 1–2 servings or less per day and a maximum of 7 servings per week. Men should keep their daily intake to less than 3 servings daily, with a maximum of 14 units per week. 6. DRINK COFFEE OR TEA

Both coffee and tea are linked to a decreased risk of chronic disease. For instance, the polyphenols and catechins found in

green tea may decrease your risk of developing cancer, diabetes and heart disease. Similarly, coffee consumption is linked to a lower risk of developing type 2 diabetes, heart disease, certain cancers and brain diseases, such as Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s. Additionally, both coffee and tea drinkers benefit from a 20–30% lower risk of early death when compared to non-drinkers.

Sleep is crucial for regulating cell function and helping your body heal. A recent study reports that longevity is likely linked to regular sleeping patterns, such as going to bed and waking up around the same time each day. Sleep duration also seems to be a factor, with both too little and too much sleep being harmful. For instance, sleeping less than 5–7 hours per night is linked to a 12% greater risk of early death, while sleeping more

This amazing health product with the unusual name was generating a lot of attention in the local community three years ago when it was the cover of MetroFitness Magazine. But now, this company has exploded into a global phenomenon. Young professionals around the world are hanging up their suits and choosing instead to be their own bosses with LIMU. And the success can still be traced to one thing only: results!

Spotlight TESTIMONIAL #01

Jay Fournet Jay was introduced to LIMU by his brother-in-law Blain Bech almost four years ago. Jay was a program director at the Parisi Speed School in Slidell, but was experiencing some health issues, and he knew things were going to have to change. His brother-in-law began to describe some of the many health benefits of fucoidan, and Jay decided to do some research and to check it out. After reviewing some of the medical research articles on PubMed. gov, Jay decided to join the business drinking his two shots a day, and two weeks later, he felt 100% better. But the product didn’t just improve his health. At the time, Jay was working 70-80 hours a week knowing that as the breadwinner of his family, he was in a vicious cycle. He needed to work harder and longer to make the money to support his family, a family he seldom got to see because he was working so much. He no longer wanted to trade time for money. LIMU was the opportunity he had been looking for. Jay never realized what a blessing LIMU was to him until his father became very ill. His dad just passed about two weeks ago, but prior to that, Jay was able to spend all his waking time with his father. For six weeks, he stepped away from the company in order to be with his dad. He was able to do this because of the residual income he continued to earn because of the people on his team. Jay told me, “99% of people wouldn’t be able to unplug from their jobs or businesses like I was able to do to dedicate time to my father. That’s what LIMU has done for me.” Now three years later, with virtually no industry experience and by building his team organically, Jay went from 50K in 2013 to 100K, and his team has grown to over 3,300 people. When Jay hit the 100K mark, he got a $10,000 bonus, a five-day cruise to Cozumel, and an all-inclusive vacation to Atlantis in the Bahamas. In 2013, only 4 people from Jay’s team qualified for BMWs, now there are 26. He’s got his health, freedom, and the time to spend with his wife and three children. Jay’s achieved and surpassed the dreams he had three years ago, and he’s not even 40 yet! Instead of being worried about his future, Jay is excited. He is presently expanding his business, looking for positive, motivated people who want more out of life!!

There are so many aspects of the LIMU experience, but it all begins with the drink. LIMU is a liquid nutrient supplement made from seaweed which can only be found in the waters off the coast of Tonga. The Tongans have attributed their vibrancy, good health, and longevity to the algae limu moui. Doctors and scientists are discovering why this plant is so healthful. Limu moui is rich in a nutrient call fucoidan, a sulfated polysaccharide and complex carbohydrate, which has been cited in over 1,300 independent, third-party, research studies published in PubMed.gov, the national library of medicine. Fucoidan has anti-inflammatory, immune-supporting properties. The LIMU Company worked together with food scientists to develop technology to be able to extract the fucoidan and process it into an easily digestible beverage that also contains 77 vitamins and nutrients including antioxidants and amino acids. The result was the patented LIMU Original made of 83% seaweed and 17% pear, mango, papaya, and apple juice. Only 2 oz in the morning and 2 oz in the evening has lead to the LIMU

Company’s solid reputation of good health. The LIMU experience is more than just the product, it’s the lifestyle. It’s a lifestyle of physical health and financial freedom. This is a global company that now in 2016, does business in Hong Kong, Columbia, Taiwan, Malaysia, Mexico, Canada, and of course, all across the United States. Despite the fact that LIMU is a global enterprise, it’s still only as important as the individual. It’s about how it changed the lives of two men here on the Northshore. Both Jay Fournet and Adam Lassus are excited about the National LIMU convention that is coming to New Orleans on June 4th at the Morial Convention Center. Check out the LIMU original as well as BluFrog, a line of lightly carbonated energy drinks rich with Fucoidan and naturally occurring caffeine and B vitamins, BluFrog 2 with fewer calories and a host of energy-boosting ingredients, and of course, LIMU Lean which includes meal replacement and protein powders especially designed to help with weight loss. LIMU Lean has 20 grams of protein and is the only protein powder in the world with fucoidan.

Limu’s secret? Limu moui– a marine vegetable native to the coastal regions of the island of Tonga. It is a valuable source of an interesting biochemical called fucoidan.

Adam Lassus

“Life isn’t just about finding yourself, it’s about creating yourself; the LIMU Experience allows you to do just that.”

Adam was only 22 years old, a recent graduate of LSU, living with Megan and his new baby in his parent’s home. He and Megan had dreams for themselves and their son Braylen. But Adam being a personal trainer and Megan a professional dancer for the NBA, they couldn’t seem to get ahead. Adam knew Jay from Cross Gates and saw the success he was having with LIMU. He decided to take a leap of faith with his trusted colleague. The initial start-up fee was less than the cost of an iPhone, but Adam and Megan still had to put it on a credit card… that’s how tight money was. Most of Adam and Megan’s dreams centered around their baby son who was only 9 months at the time. Adam wanted to be a “present father,’ one who was able to provide for his family as well as be there for them. One of the biggest selling points for Adam and Megan was that LIMU was so naturally healthy, they were able to give it to their son! With the help and support of Jay, his entire team, and a passion for the product as well as the health and fitness industry, Adam and Megan have been able to achieve many of those life goals they set for themselves at 22; Adam is only 25! One of those major goals was to open their own gym by the time they were 40. Last October, this was a goal checked off their list. Adam says, “We look better. We feel better. We have freedom, and a better way of life!” Megan and I invite you to check out Family Fitness, an amazing facility in the Abita Springs/Mandeville area. Talk to this couple and ask them how they continue to feed their entrepreneurial spirit daily by helping people not only acquire better health but also improved wealth.

Herman is owner of Smith Sporting Goods in Slidell. Since I started LIMU, I have no knee pain, and I feel extremely healthy and energetic. Once I realized all the benefits of LIMU, I began to promote it as well. In a few short months, I was able to reach my first milestone and earn my BMW. I’ve found a way to get paid helping people both physically and financially. Now, I’m looking for more people interested in being their own boss to build, train, and develop my team. TESTIMONIAL #04

When I first was introduced to LIMU I was a little skeptical and curious at the same time. After I started taking LIMU my knee range of motion expanded and pain subsided. Along with an increase in my energy level improved both then and now, is reasons why I drink LIMU.

AYDEN’S FOUNDATION OF HOPE Ayden’s Foundation of Hope is a local, registered 501c3 non-profit organization based out of Slidell, Louisiana. The mission of Ayden’s Foundation of Hope is to minister to families that have lost a child by sharing the love of Christ with them, to help pay for funeral and medical expenses, to promote organ donor awareness, and to help pay for child swimming lessons thru Swim School of Slidell. In June of 2011, Ayden Phillips fell into a swimming pool in his grandparents back yard and drowned. Ayden’s parents, Darryl and Erin Phillips, both jumped into the pool and got him out quickly, and began CPR. Darryl performed CPR until paramedics arrived and took over. Ayden was rushed to Slidell Memorial Hospital where they were able to get his heart beating again. Despite everything that his parents, the paramedics, firefighters, police officers, nurses, and doctors did to save him, Ayden went without oxygen for too long and he was pronounced brain dead on June 17th, 2011 at just 3 ½ years old. Darryl and Erin Phillips knew that God must have had a bigger plan for Ayden, and for their family. This is when Ayden’s Foundation of Hope first began. What started off as Darryl and Erin just wanting to help a few local families cope with the loss of a child, and to help them pay for the heavy burden of a funeral, has turned into something so much more. Since this ministry first began in 2011, Ayden’s Foundation of Hope has been able to reach more than 350 families across the United States, and has raised well over $100,000, all of which goes directly to the operation of the ministry and to the families that have lost a child. This ministry has had an enormous amount of support from the very beginning, and the support seems to be growing with more and more people getting involved. Ayden’s Foundation of Hope raises funds at two main fundraisers throughout the year. The first being a flag football tournament, and the second being a benefit dinner and auction followed by a bass fishing tournament the next day. This year makes our 5th Annual Benefit Dinner and Auction and Bass Fishing Tournament. We are hoping to make this the biggest event yet. This year, the benefit dinner and auction will be held at the Slidell Auditorium on May 27th, 2016 starting at 5pm. The auction portion

will begin at 6pm. Dinner will consist of fried catfish plates with all the sides that go along with that, as well as pizza and other items. There will be a variety of items to bid on, from jewelry, to fishing gear, fishing trips, furniture, hand painted signs, and much more! The bass fishing tournament begins at first light on the early morning of May 28th, 2016 from the East Pearl River boat launch near Pearlington. This year, first place in the bass fishing tournament will take home $3,000! We are still accepting donations for the auction. Any and all items are more than appreciated. The more money raised, the more families we can continue to be a blessing to. We are so grateful for all the support we have received from our family, friends, church, and community.

What is 24 in 24?

The 24 in 24 is a fundraiser to help fight breast cancer. We will do 24 Crossfit workouts of the day (WODs) in 24 hours. We will start a new workout every hour on the hour. We are asking the community to join us, $25 a WOD but we will not turn anyone or any amount of money away.

How much money is raised with the campaign? Year 1: $7000 for Renee and her family Year 2: $7000 for Susan Komen (the actual 1st year of 24 in 24) Year 3: $17,000 for Cancer Association of Greater New Orleans (year 2 of 24 in 24) Year 4: $34,873 for Mary B. Perkins (year 3 of 24 in 24) Year 5: $63,185 for Mary B Perkins (year 4 of 24 in 24) Year 6: Our goal in $75,000 and we will be doing it for Mary B Perkins again.

How many years have you been hosting 24 in 24?

We have done the actual 24 in 24 for 4 years, now going on our 5th.

What types of workouts are planned for the event and can any experience level participate? How did it start?

The 24 in 24 started four years ago as a fundraiser to help offset chemo cost for my sister, Renee Venezia Hamilton after she was diagnosed with breast cancer. She was a military wife at Ft. Bragg, NC and was able to come out of area for her surgery so we did a “Fight Gone Bad” to raise her money. After that, I promised her that I’d do a fundraiser every year to raise money to fight breast cancer.

ALL movements will be scalable (ie if someone has never done a deadlift we will replace that move with something simple like a push up) so all levels are invited.

What are the dates of the event and where is it located?

June 11th at 10am until June 12th at 10am, at: Crossfit No Surrender 625 Plaza Dr. Covington, La. 70433

Where can the public learn more about how they can support this event? Anyone can find more info? www.crossfitnosurrender.com and click on the 24 in 24 tab or call Shane Venezia @ (985) 893-2220
