value of their cars and homes. They spend extra on dry cleaning and teeth cleaning/ whitening. Long term, they earn less and receive less in pension and Social Security benefits. Indeed, being a smoker can not only mean you don't get hired, you can get fired, too. After announcing it would no longer employ smokers, Weyco, a medical-benefits administrator in Michigan, fired four employees who refused to submit to a breath test. It began testing the spouses of its employees, too, levying an $80 per-month surcharge on those who don't test clean.

The costs add up: Cigarettes, dry cleaning, insurance - you can even lose your job. A 40-year-old who quits and puts the savings into a 401(k) could save almost $250,000 by age 70. If the threat of cancer can't persuade you to quit smoking, maybe the prospect of pover ty will. The financial consequences of lighting up stretch far beyond the cost of a pack of cigarettes. Smokers pay more for insurance. They lose money on the resale

MARIJUANA USE LINKED TO HIGHER RISK OF STROKE The most popular illegal drug, marijuana, may double the risk of stroke among young adults, according to findings revealed at The American Stroke Association's International Stroke Conference 2013. The study, carried out in New Zealand, identified that marijuana smokers were more than twice as likely than healthy adults to have suffered an ischemic stroke and transient ischemic attack (TIA). Lead investigator of the study, P. Alan Barber, Ph.D., M.D., said: "This is the first case-controlled study to show a possible

link to the increased risk of stroke from cannabis. Cannabis has been thought by the public to be a relatively safe, although illegal substance. This study shows this might not be the case; it may lead to stroke."

The Benefits of...

KID'S TEAM SPORTS The stereotype of the cutthroat, pushy little league coach is all too familiar to most people. Why, some parents ask, should I subject my child to competitive team spor ts if that’s how it goes? For one thing, the news. Today’s generation of children is fighting the worst obesity epidemic in history. Giving kids an excuse to exercise is reason enough to consider enrolling them in team spor ts. But calories aside, team spor ts also provide the social and emotional benefits to kids. Did we also mention that by practicing drills with your child and running up and down the sidelines to cheer them on, you might get into better shape, too? Score one for the family team!

There are plenty of options out there.. check out local oppor tunities for your kids.

TANNING BED CANCER RISK DOUBLE THAT OF SUMMER SUN The risk of skin cancer from tanning beds is two times higher than spending the same length of time in the Mediterranean midday summer sun. The finding came from a new study conducted by a team of researchers at the University of Dundee, Scotland, and published in the British Journal of Dermatology. The scientists examined 400 tanning beds in the UK and measured their levels of ultraviolet (UV) radiation. UV radiation was emitted at levels above British and EU guidelines in nine out of ten beds. The average power of

the tanning beds' radiation was almost two times the suggested limit. The risk of getting skin cancer from using these tanning beds was also analyzed, and then compared with the risk from the Mediterranean sun at about noontime in the summer, in the Cancer Research UK repor t. The tanning beds that were examined had an average skin cancer risk two times higher than the risk after being in the Mediterranean summer sun at noontime for the same length of time.

WALKING REDUCES HEART RISK AS MUCH AS RUNNING Brisk walking can reduce a person's risk of diabetes, high blood pressure, and high cholesterol just as much as running can. The finding came from a new study published in the journal Arteriosclerosis, Thrombosis and Vascular Biology which examined 33,060 runners in the National Runners' Health Study and 15,045 walkers in the National Walkers' Health Study. During the six-year study period, the investigators discovered that the same energy used for moderate intensity walking and vigorous intensity

running lead to comparable reductions in the likelihood for diabetes, high blood pressure, and potentially coronary heart disease. Paul T. Williams, Ph.D., leading author and staff scientist at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory, Life Science Division in Berkeley, Calif., said: "Walking and running provide an ideal test of the health benefits of moderate-intensity walking and vigorous-intensity running because they involve the same muscle groups and the same activities performed at different intensities."

Somewhere in the world, a lion ave Y wakes up every morning not knowing what it’s going to eat. Every day, it must find food. The lion isn’t worried—it just does what it needs to do. Somewhere else, in a zoo, a caged lion sits around every day and waits for a zookeeper. The lion is comfortable. It gets to relax. It’s not worried much, either. Both of these animals are lions, but only one is a king. Don’t settle for a life of comfort. We were meant to take risks, be bold, hunt big game and achieve great things. If a lion was to sit around in the jungle all day, waiting for a meal to come to him, he would starve to death. He could believe that he was entitled to a zebra to snack on, he could think that it was unfair that he had to hunt or he could complain that it was too hot to run around. But if he doesn’t hunt, he doesn’t

eat. Alternatively, if a lion gets up, searches for his prey, uses an effective hunting strategy and expends energy to catch his meal, he has a full stomach. He understands that he eats what he kills. We’re much the same. A successful career is not something that you’re entitled to and it will take hard work to establish. The body you want is going to take more hard work and proper eating. But if you take the initiative, look for opportunities, work to a strategy and expend the energy required, you give yourself a chance to have a flourishing career. You may think that it’s all too hard, not entirely fair and not guaranteed to work. But just like the lion, we eat what we kill. Which lion are you?

3. ENERGY If you have a big game or activity after school, plan a lunch and snacks that combine lean proteins with carbohydrates to give you lasting energy and keep you going through the late afternoon. Some ideas: your own "trail" mix of dried fruit and nuts or sunflower seeds, whole-grain pretzels and low-fat cheese, or a bagful of baby carrots and yogurt dip.

2. VARIETY It doesn't hurt to cave in and enjoy the occasional serving of pizza and hot dogs. But if you're eating these foods all the time, your body probably feels ready for a change. A packed lunch a couple of times a week means you can enjoy some favorites that you might not find at every school — like a piping hot thermos of your mom's chicken soup; hummus and pita bread; or some crisp, farmstand apples.

Glycosides are neither absorbed nor assimilated therefore there is no insulin response rendering stevia a zero on the glycemic index. percentage. A recent study showed that chocolate milk has the ideal ratio of carbohydrates, protein, and fat for post-workout recovery; however, your favorite brand of chocolate milk does not contain the amino acids, creatine, cortisol blockers, and antioxidants recommended for maximum recovery. When choosing a post-workout supplement, be careful to read the ingredients closely to make sure that the best quality creatine, BCAA’s, and cortisol blockers are being used. Cheaper brands often use creatine monohydrate or creatine ethyl ester which is poorly digested and can cause water retention, bloating, and stomach discomfort. A PH correct creatine, such as Kre-Alkalyn and Magna Power creatine (magnesium creatine chelate), is highly absorbable and has a low acidity level which blocks the conversion of creatine to creatinine, which is

a waste product tha is filtered out the body by the kidneys. BCAA’s in the alpha-ketoglutarate (AKG) form can help increase protein synthesis at a faster rate than amino acids alone. Studies have shown that phosphatidylserine, often referred to as PS 100, when consumed in large amounts up to 800 mg or more can help block the release of the catabolic hormone cortisol. Critical antioxidants such as alpha lipoic acid, grape seed extract, and pomegranate can help prevent free radical and cell damage which is often associated with intense training. There is a small window of opportunity after exercise, which ranges from the first few minutes following training for up to an hour when the human body is in a position to take advantage and utilize all of these key nutrients. Fall is in the air. We are starting to see fall decorations, gourds, ghosts, weather changes and of course pumpkins. If you’ve ever carved a jack-o’-lantern, you’ve encountered the large glob of seeds in the middle. Next time don’t throw them away. They are one of nature’s superfoods. Let’s discuss the benefits of the pumpkin seed. Pumpkin seeds often call pepitas, are the edible kernels of pumpkins. The seeds are tiny con-

So what’s so SUPER about Pumpkin Seeds? GOOD FATS Their high calorie value mainly comes from protein and fats. The kernels are rich in mono-unsaturated fatty acids (MUFA) like oleic acid. This fat helps lower bad LDL cholesterol and increases good HDL cholesterol in the blood. Research has shown that diets high in monounsaturated fatty acids help to prevent heart disease and reduce the risk of stroke. In recent

experimental studies, it is suggested that certain phytochemical compounds in pumpkin seed oil may have a role in prevention of diabetic nephropathy (diabetic kidney disease). PROTEIN Pumpkins are high in protein. The seeds are an excellent source of amino acid tryptophan and glutamate. Tryptophan is the amino acid that makes you sleepy after you consume your Thanksgiving turkey. The tryptophan is converted into serotonin and niacin. Serotonin is a beneficial neuro-chemical often claimed to be nature’s sleeping pill. ANTI-STRESS Glutamate is responsible for the synthesis of gamma-amino butyric acid (GABA). GABA, an anti-stress neurochemical in the brain, helps reducing anxiety, nervous irritability, and other neurotic conditions. VITAMIN E Pumpkin seeds are packed with vitamin E they contain about 35.10 mg of per 100 g. Vitamin E is a powerful lipid soluble antioxidant. This vitamin assists in tissue repair and prevents free radical damage to cells. VITAMIN B COMPLEX Pumpkin has Vitamin B. The B-complex group of vitamins are thiamin, riboflavin, niacin, pantothenic acid, vitamin B-6 and folates. MINERAL POWER These tiny seeds also contain good amounts of essential minerals like copper, manganese, potassium, calcium, iron, magnesium, zinc and selenium. Some additional benefits that have been noted to be the result of consuming pumpkin seeds are: • Reduce symptoms of benign prostate enlargement • Reduce symptoms of overactive bladder. • Lower Blood sugar levels • Reduce Blood Pressure • Promote healthy and strong bones

"Your Health is Your Greatest Wealth!"

Walking into Casso’s is like walking into an old-fashioned “mom and pop” shop; it’s small and cozy, family owned and operated. While you may feel like you’re sitting with Mike Casso at his kitchen table, make no mistake, this business is about as cutting edge as technology can get! Mike Casso, a nutritional and pharmaceutical consultant, began his career as a pharmacist in 1980 working for Oschner Hospital. He transitioned in 1990 to a Home-Health pharmacist working primarily with oncology medicines. It was during these 20 years that he saw so many people, including his loved ones, suffering from malnutrition that was a consequence of the cancer treatments. “I saw my Godfather, my MonMon, and my PawPaw suffering through chemotherapy. My drug knowledge was not enough. I knew I had to learn more about nutrition.” Mike recognized this as a turning point in his life. He went back to school and in 1997, Mike Casso became a clinical nutritionist. It’s this unique perspective that Mike has which allows him to help and support people in a way that few others are able to. “I would like doctors to combine pharmaceuticals with good nutritional diets.” Mike tells me. “Many of the more recent medical school graduates are beginning to see the delicate balance between the nutritional world and the allopathic world.” One specific example he gave was synthetics. “Synthetics are foreign to the body; therefore, we have to deal with the side effects and burden on the liver to metabolize and kidneys

to eliminate most of them. The meds also cause depletion of nutrients that can actually cause the disorder it’s prescribed to treat. So at least replace the nutrients when you take your meds. Do you know what your meds are depleting?” Casso’s Wellness now has a 3D body scan. This is the first truly, noninvasive, non-X-ray or MRI technology in the world. This 3-D analyzer can show advanced warning signs of major and minor health problems in the heart, brain, stomach and all major organs. "Prevention is where it's at. You do preventive maintenance on your vehicle, right? You should do it on your body too!" "When it comes to your health, you don’t have to be a genius… you just have to use one!” Mike says about the Photon Genius which can help the body in so many ways by relieving pain and detoxifying pathogens, bacteria, viruses and waste products. It can strengthen the body’s own immune system

In 1980 as a hospital pharmacist, Mike Casso, P.D., C.N, had a baby in the PICU whose diaper rash was so severe from antibiotics treating salmonella poisoning, that he had to develop a suave that would be both safe and effective for the infant. Casso’s Cream was born. It’s antibacterial, anti-fungal, and an anti-inflammatory cream that Mike's dad always said, "No medicine cabinet should be without!" Manufactured in both pharmaceutical grade and over-the-counter form, it is good for anything thing from bee stings to diaper rash to poison ivy…and everything in between. For more information and a look at the hundreds of uses, check out: www.cassoscream.com

Casso's also dispenses alkaline water by the gallon at the store to help maintain the body’s alkalinity. The Wellness Water Company can install water purification systems in your home and office, but the end product is alkaline not acidic. We remove the toxins from the river water and alkalinize the water in the final step before it's used…This final step is what separates us from the rest! Most disease states occur when the body is acidic.

Mike says: Both my PawPaw and MonMon love to see us eat. Their favorite saying was, “I’d rather pay grocery bills, than doctor bills.” People use to spend 25% of their income on groceries, now it’s less than 10%. They're trying to save money on the wrong thing. We are what we eat. If you desire a quality life, you have to put in quality ingredients. Unfortunately, we have been trained to go to the doctor when we have a problem and get a pill. Let the doctor fix me and not take responsibility for the choices we make on what we put into our mouths.

and cardiovascular system. Mike reminds us that…”God gave us the best immune system in the world. It just needs to be on.” The Photon Genius even promotes weight loss! To find out more about this new-age technology, check out: www.edskilling.com Mike wants people to know, “You now have options besides just the drug route. And combining drug therapy with good nutrition is always the best combo.” Casso’s Wellness Store and Gym is located at 3308 Cleary Avenue. Stop in anytime Monday–Friday and speak to either Mike or his manager Jaime. Call them at (504)-888-3077; the website is www.thewellnessstore.com and you can find them on Facebook as well.

KetoOS is a supplement that can help people lose weight and improve overall health by allowing the body to get to ketosis faster than normal. In fact, KetoOS allows the body to achieve ketosis in less than an hour, while it takes the average person over three weeks on a strict low carb diet. Ketosis is the process where bodies burn fat for energy instead of carbs. The average person would have a difficult time getting to and staying in ketosis because of our traditionally high carb and sugar diet. This is an ideal energy source and a great way to lose weight, improve your energy level, and just feel great!!

Mark Lawson

Meet Mark Lawson, a personal trainer who is making a big name for himself in the Slidell area. He’s a local boy, son of an oilman who traveled around a lot as a young kid, but then settled here for good. Knowing Mark in school might be surprising to people who know him now. He was chubby in elementary and didn’t participate in any athletics in high school. He married the love of his life Amber at 21, and together they gained weight with each of her pregnancies! Combine that with his cigarette habit, and Mark wasn’t a very healthy adult.

It took some Destin beach photographs for Mark to realize he had to make changes if he was going to be the father and husband that his family needed. He quit smoking, started to watch and track his diet, and began exercising. “It was a slow process,” Mark says, “but I stuck with it!” He joined the gym and began walking on the treadmill. He lost over 60 pounds the old-fashioned way: through exercise and clean eating….and Mark learned so much along the way. After injuring his back at work and being disabled for over a year, Mark fell into a depression. He and his wife prayed about his future. “I felt led by God telling me to follow my passion and use my knowledge to help other people in my situation.” Mark jokingly says that he and God had some arguments about this…”It’s tough making a living being a personal trainer!” But God won this one, and Mark has been successful ever since. Mark had a fire in his soul. He got his PT certification from the Cooper Institute; he’s also a USA Level 1 Sports Performance Coach, a CrossFit Level 1 instructor, certified in both NETA Kettle Bell and TRX Bootcamp. He joined the Slidell Athletic team about three years ago, and now he’s been with Cross Gates for three years as well. And Mark’s future? He might like his own fitness studio, but he absolutely wants to continue to help people change their lives. Mark has always done team fitness, so becoming a coach for the LightenUp Program seemed like a good fit. In fact, his teams have placed in the top three positions since he started with LightUp. He’s coached the first place individual winners, and last year, Mark’s teams actually swept 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place!! Mark likes to remind people that fitness is for everyone. No matter where your starting point is….you can succeed! Mark’s favorite motto is “Always give yourself YOUR best effort because you’re worth it!”

“The best trainer is one who is passionate about what he does. If I didn’t love what I was doing, my clients would know. I’m invested in each and every one of them… and they know it!”

“I’m a high energy, athlete client-focused coach who doesn’t believe in excuses. My passion is to see my clients push past perceived limitations and succeed.”
