Butterfly A woman was at work and received a phone call that her daughter was very sick with a fever. She left for the pharmacy to get some medication for her daughter. On a beautiful sunny morning, a man found a cocoon of a butterfly. The next day a small opening appeared. He sat and watched the butterfly for several hours as it struggled to force its body through that little hole. Then it seemed to stop making any progress. It appeared as if it had gotten as far as it could, and it could go no further. So the man decided to help the butterfly. He took a pair of scissors and snipped off the remaining bit of the cocoon. The butterfly then emerged easily. But it had a swollen body and small, shriveled wings. The man continued to watch the butterfly because he expected that, at any moment, the wings would enlarge and expand to be able to support the body, which would contract in time. Neither happened! In fact, the butterfly spent the rest of its life crawling around with a swollen body and shriveled wings. It never was able to fly. What the

man, in his kindness and haste, did not understand was that the restricting cocoon and the struggle required for the butterfly to get through the tiny opening were God’s way of forcing fluid from the body of the butterfly into its wings so that it would be ready for flight once it achieved its freedom from the cocoon.

As we go through life we should keep in mind that struggling is an important part of any growth experience. In fact, it is that struggle that causes us to develop our ability to fly. If God allowed us to go through our lives without any obstacles, it would cripple us.

Lycopene’s Effect on Prostate Cancer in the Lab

Sleep Paralysis Sleep paralysis is a medical phenomenon where awakening person experiences temporary inability to move or speak. It is a state between being asleep and awake, where one’s mind is awake but the body is still sleeping. It usually lasts only a couple of seconds or up to one minute, but one can get a feeling it lasts much longer (several minutes). It usually happens very rarely and almost always when sleeping on its back. Regularly, person can experience panic attack and severe paranoia during this state, as the feeling of helplessness intensifies.

Did you know that tomatoes get their familiar bright orange-red color because they contain a naturally occurring red plant pigment known as lycopene? Lycopene is a phytochemical that is found in colorful fruits and vegetables, which has also shown to have impressive cancer fighting properties in laboratory studies. Treatment with lycopene damaged prostate cancer cells, causing them to grow much slower. In one promising study, mice with human prostate cancer cells treated with both chemotherapy and lycopene lived longer and had smaller tumors than those treated with chemotherapy alone.

Similarly, other studies show that a combination of lycopene and anticancer drugs stops the growth and spread of prostate cancer much more effectively than when these drugs are used alone, with no additional side effects. Read more on the nutritional benefits of tomatoes and learn about the French Market 30th Creole Tomato Festival, coming up June 11th-12th.

Boost Human Growth Hormone Intermittent fasting for periods ranging from 12-24 hours along with high-intensity exercise has a positive effect on boosting Human Growth Hormone (HGH). HGH is a very important protein-based hormone that is produced by the pituitary gland. HGH enhances the cellular repair processes that allow us to age with grace. HGH regulates metabolism to burn fat, build muscle, and slow down the negative effects of stress.

2 Main Reasons Why You Forget Things One of the most common explanations is a simple failure to retrieve the information from memory. This often occurs when memories are rarely accessed, causing them to decay over time. Another common cause of forgetting is interference, which occurs when some memories compete with other memories. For example, imagine that a woman just started a new school year as an elemen-

Pg. 6

Researchers at the Intermountain Medical Center Heart Institute found that men who had fasted for 24 hours had a 2000% increase in circulating HGH. Women who were tested had a 1300% increase in HGH. A 2009 study in the British Journal of Sports Medicine showed that lactic acid accumulation helps to trigger HGH. Intense anaerobic training, (resistance training), can help produce lactic acid, (as opposed to walking or running, which do not).

tary school teacher. She spends some time learning the names of each of her students, but over the course of the year she finds herself constantly calling one particular girl by the wrong name. Why? Because the girl’s older sister was in the same class the year before, and the two look remarkably similar. It is the memory of the older sister that makes it so difficult to recall the younger student’s name.

HEARING FAST FACT

Men are 2.5 times more likely to develop noise induced hearing loss than women. The saddest part of this statistic is that noise induced hearing loss is preventable! If you go to concerts, mow your lawn, hunt/fish or listen to music with headphones, you are potentially at risk for noise induced hearing loss. One of the easiest ways to reduce the risk of hearing loss is using hearing protection. Dr. Joe Griffith, III of Accessible Hearing Aids can customize hearing protection for YOU. If you already experience hearing loss or balance disorders, he can bring hearing to your home.

Exercise Gives You Energy

You might be surprised at how, say, popping in a workout tape for 30 minutes in the morning can change your whole day. When endorphins are released into your bloodstream during exercise, says Astorino, “you feel much more energized the rest of the day.” And when you improve your strength and stamina, it’s easier to accomplish everyday tasks like carrying groceries and climbing stairs. This also helps you feel more energetic over the course of the day. A common excuse among Atkinson’s clients is that they’re too tired to exercise, he says. While exercise may make you feel more tired at first, he says, that won’t last long. The physical tiredness you feel after working out isn’t the same as everyday fatigue, he says. Besides, once your body adjusts to exercise, you’ll have more energy than ever.

Does your bathroom need modification? As your needs change and as you age, the more vital it is to your welfare that your bathroom adapts to your needs. It isn’t just a matter of safety and convenience. Bathrooms are often the place where life-changing falls can occur. Once damage is done, expensive medications, treatments, and surgeries can never fully replace what’s lost. More people than ever are suffering from chronic pains and conditions through a lifetime of experiences, and this makes the dangers of wet floors and entering and exiting baths and showers all the more dangerous. The trend of accidents from falls is increasing, and the remedy is usually to search for pills, treatments,

or surgeries to dull the pain and repair the damage. With Superior Bath and Shower there is a risk-free way you can have an expert work with you to identify the kind of bathroom modifications that would help prevent a fall in your bathroom. You can have the changes made to your home that will meet your needs, to the smallest detail, and have your bathroom and other areas of your home customized entirely for you. Your bathroom should be a safe and comfortable place for you to relax. To ensure that your bathroom fits your needs, it is important to identify your personal needs. For example, do you have numbness in your hands or feet? What is your height and build? Understanding these key areas will identify which changes are necessary to fit your exact needs. Having a bathroom that’s precisely fitted for you may sound too good to be true – but it’s just what we do here at Superior Bath and Shower.

You Say Tomato...

Tomato, Tomoto, fruit or vegetable, we love classic recipes with delicious Creole tomatoes, especially at the height of the summer, when they are in season - and celebrated in New Orleans with a Creole Tomato Festival! For gardeners and cooks in Louisiana, summer is not summer without Creole tomatoes. Although relatively late to ripen, those loyal to Creole tomatoes are willing to wait. Creole tomatoes tolerate heat and humidity, ripening into a meatier-than-average tomato with outstanding flavor. Developed at LSU for warm, humid areas, the indeterminate vines delight gardeners with high yields of juicy fruit that resists cracking. Vines are vigorous, so use tall cages.

Liz Maddox:

What Alice Forgot by Liane Moriarty has a premise that I think would be many middle-aged women’s fantasy. Wouldn’t it be great if you simply lost ten years? What if you lost ten years of pent-up anger, resentment, and sorrow? What if you could go back to a particular time in your life and have a second chance at doing it all right?

This month's selection: What Alice Forgot by Liane Moriarty

Between the Wines rating:

FOUR OUT OF FIVE STEMS

Next month's selection: Our Souls at Night by Kent Haruf

At 39, Alice hits her head and loses consciousness, only to wake up believing she’s 29. Alice needs to reconstruct the last ten years. She needs to discover why her husband is divorcing her and why her sister will hardly speak to her. Alice takes advantage of her head injury to repair relationships. “Early love is exciting and exhilarating. It’s light and bubbly. Anyone can love like that. But after three children, after a separation and a near-divorce, after you’ve hurt each other and forgiven each other, bored each other and surprised each other, after you’ve seen the worst and the best—well, that sort of love is effable. It deserves its own word.”

Cathy:

I’ve enjoyed all of the Liane Moriarty novels I’ve read, and this one was no exception. The author uses subtle humor and empathy to portray family life in all its nuances.

This is a very entertaining novel that makes you realize how much you’ve changed since the age of 29. Perfect book for summer vacation!

Cindy:

Marlene:

I felt some of the characters were caricatures of people and didn’t seem genuine. That being said, I really enjoyed the author’s sense of humor in this zany tale of middle-age amnesia!

Pg. 14

Sometimes the novel is predictable, and sometimes a bit long-winded, but Moriarty’s writing is humorous and her characters are so refreshing that it’s an enjoyable trip. Liane Moriarty is an Australian novelist who lives in Sydney. Between the Wines read Big Little Lies another Moriarty book last year, and we loved it! Apparently we weren’t the only ones, because HBO has produced a limited series created by David E. Kelley starring Nicole Kidman and Reese Witherspoon. The release date is in early 2017.

What Alice Forgot is a story about second chances, and wouldn’t we all like to get a second chance at life? If you need something silly and light, this is the perfect fit. It’s totally predictable, but very enjoyable and easy to read.

what you NEED to KNOW about

CANCER

Diet, Exercise, and Cancer Good diet and weight management are both important for our health. Studies indicate that diets high in vegetables and fruit may decrease the risk of cancer. The American Cancer Society recommends 150 minutes of moderate intensity physical activity per week. On the other hand, poor diet and obesity can be significant in the development of cancer. Increased consumption of processed meat, saturated fats and some dairy products seem to increase cancer risks. For every 10 pounds of weight gain, there is a relative 7-11% increase risk of breast cancer, uterine cancer, ovarian cancer, colon cancer, kidney and prostate cancer. Approximately 80,000 cancer patients diagnosed every year are directly related to obesity. A simple way of determining obesity is measuring the waistline. For men a waistline greater than 40 inches and for women a waistline greater than 35 inches indicates obesity. The opinions voiced in this material are for general information only and are not intended to provide specific advice or recommendations for any individual. celebrities, popularity, and the list is almost endless. As we mature we figure that out and realize it may be foolish to spend too much time worrying about such things. Now what I’m about to say is not an easy thing to think about, but we need to think about it: Here today, gone tomorrow sometimes applies to people! Yikes, I know, I just went there! Stay with me, this turns out really positive! I don’t recommend you spend time worrying about that reality, but at least be aware that it’s a fact of life and let it influence the way you live your life. A spiritually mature person realizes the importance of letting those they love and care about know about it! A Stroke is No Joke Stroke is the fifth leading cause of death in the United States, and approximately one American dies from a stroke every four minutes, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). A stroke is a neurologic emergency; it can cause brain damage, long-term disability or death. A stroke, also referred to as a brain attack, is a sudden disruption in the flow of blood to the brain. Without oxygen-rich blood, brain cells begin to die, and symptoms occur in the parts of the body that those brain cells control. It is imperative that someone experiencing a stroke gets treatment immediately to reduce any brain damage. There are two main types of strokes: ischemic and hemorrhagic. Ischemic strokes occur if an artery supplying oxygen-rich blood becomes blocked, usually by a blood clot. Ischemic strokes are more common than hemorrhagic strokes. Hemorrhagic strokes occur if an artery in the brain leaks blood or ruptures (breaks open). The pressure from the leaked blood damages brain cells. Conditions like high blood pressure and aneurysms are usually the cause of hemorrhagic strokes. There is also another condition that is similar to a stroke called a transient ischemic attack (TIA). They are often referred to as “mini-strokes, and they occur when blood flow to a portion of the brain is blocked temporarily, causing temporary brain damage. Even though symptoms and brain damage may be temporary, TIAs still require emergency care. Symptoms of a stroke include sudden severe headache; sudden confusion, trouble speaking or difficulty understanding speech; sudden weakness, numbness or paralysis of the face; sudden loss of vision, blurred vision, unequal pupils or double vision; and sudden onset of dizziness, loss of balance or loss of coordination. If you think you are having a stroke, call 9-1-1 immediately. Do not drive or let anyone else drive you to the hospital. It is imperative that medical professionals reach you as soon as possible to begin treatment. Every minute counts during a stroke! Individuals who arrive at the emergency room within three hours of initial stroke symptoms have less disability three months later than those who waited to seek care. There are numerous factors that can increase your risk for stroke, such as high blood pressure; diabetes; heart disease; smoking; age; gender; race and ethnicity; personal or family history of stroke; brain aneurysms or arteriovenous malformations; alcohol use; lack of physical activity; overweight or obesity; stress and depression; unhealthy cholesterol levels; unhealthy diet; and use of nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs). You cannot control all risk factors; however, you can control the following: quit smoking, maintain a healthy weight, be physically active, eat a heart-healthy diet, limit alcohol consumption, and manage stress.

Focus on the Dangers of Stroke

a Stroke is

NO JOKE If you suspect someone may be having a stroke, ACT FAST: Face: Ask the person to smile. Does one side of the face droop? Arms: Ask the person to raise both arms. Does one arm drift downwards? Speech: Ask the person to repeat a simple phrase. Is their speech slurred or strange? Time: If you observe any of these signs, call 9-1-1 immediately. Remember, every minute counts during a stroke.

Welcome to the Stage...

John “Spud” McConnell Love Dat Spud

article by Mary Bounds Photographs by Bach Imagery, LLC Just call him “Spud.” He’s New Orleans’ revered radio host, stand-up comic and accomplished actor on stage, screen and television, but most of all John McConnell is a hit with the hometown crowd. Known by his nickname, “Spud,” this Louisiana native thrilled audiences for years with his WWL radio program, “The Spud Show.” Now hosting his weekly TV show, “The Spudcast” on WLAE, McConnell is busy wowing crowds again. And don’t forget he’s the popular spokesperson on Dorignac’s commercials, plugging the catchy phrase, “Yeah, we got dat!” Truly a local celebrity New Orleans loves and trusts, McConnell has proven throughout his career he’s as versatile as he is talented!

Pg. 21

Born in Baton Rouge on November 13, 1958, McConnell grew up away from the hustle and bustle in nearby Gonzales. At the age of ten he was nicknamed “Spud” by members of his Boy Scout troop and is still widely known by this moniker today. His innate interest in acting lead McConnell to pursue a bachelor’s degree in theatre at Nicholl’s State University and later a Master’s degree in theatre from Louisiana State University. After kick-starting his career as a stand-up comedian in Baton Rouge, McConnell went on the road for several years, working far from his Louisiana roots in New York and Los Angeles. As fate would have it, a limousine ride from the Crescent City to the Mississippi Gulf Coast effectively brought John McConnell back to Louisiana for good. While performing in New Orleans, McConnell agreed to appear on the local television program, “Yat Chat” and shared a limo ride with the show’s host, a young writer/producer/actor named Maureen Brennen. Immediately drawn to the talented redhead, McConnell married Brennen within the year and established New Orleans as his permanent home. Today, after more than twenty years and three children, “Spud and Mo” reside in Old Metairie and continue to collaborate professionally on many career endeavors. McConnell admits that stage was his early career favorite, although he grew in appreciation

Pg. 22

of radio, television and film. His roles on stage have been many, but perhaps the most wellknown was that of Louisiana’s governor, Huey P. Long in the play named “The Kingfish.” In preparing for the celebrated role, McConnell states, “I studied this man for a year and a half before going on stage. I perfected my craft.” Indeed, McConnell has portrayed Long in numerous venues over the years and has become quite an authority on the subject. He also played the part of Huey Long’s younger brother in the one man play by Jason Berry, “Earl Long in Purgatory,” as well as the colorful character Ignatius J. Reilly in “A Confederacy of Dunces.” It was McConnell’s impressive portrayal of Huey Long that lead to his friendship with actor and New Orleans resident, John Goodman. The two met during the reading for the TNT movie, “Kingfish” in which Goodman played the part of Huey Long. Goodman respected McConnell’s adept stage portrayal of Long and had been following his career with interest. McConnell fondly recalls their first meeting. “When we met Goodman said, ‘You know, you oughta be playing my role.’ And I said, ‘You know, you're right!’ ” Goodman took McConnell’s photo and resume back to Los Angeles where he was also starring in the TV sitcom “Roseanne.” Within a few months McConnell was signing for a oneshot part on “Roseanne” which turned into 12

episodes over 3 seasons. According to McConnell, “Working on ‘Roseanne’ was a hoot!” and despite their busy schedules, he and Goodman have remained good friends. In addition to “Roseanne,” McConnell played the part of DJ Jeffy Jeff in the TV series “Treme.” His most recent TV roles were in “Underground” and “Hap and Leonard.” But lets not forget his work on the big screen. McConnell has also appeared as a character actor in over 40 films including: O Brother, Where Art Thou?, Interview with the Vampire: The Vampire Chronicles, 12 Years a Slave, Django Unchained and The Reaping. Remarkably the list continues to grow! In the Spring of 2003, McConnell added radio to his already diverse resume, guest hosting for Andre Trevigne and David Tyree on WWL. Drawing from his early years as a stand-up comic, McConnell was comfortable improvising on the air. “The transition for me was easier than most,” McConnell explains. “I needed to study up on my facts and news stories and learn to maintain control of the conversation…But the talking part was easy.” Talk-radio seemed a good fit for McConnell with his quick wit and fun personality, and it appeared everyone in New Orleans agreed. By October 2004, McConnell was hosting his own talk show on WWL radio, “The Spud Show.” The audience took note as they listened to his informative, fun programs, and before long “Spud” was a trusted household name. In fact, New Orleans Magazine twice honored McConnell as the No.1 talk show host in the city. “The Spud Show” became a steadfast part of the New Orleans culture, and it’s amazing ten year run solidified the incredible bond between Spud and his loyal fans. Currently McConnell has his own television program called “ The Spudcast," which airs on WLAE Channel 32, Cox Channel 14 in the metro area on Wednesday at 6:00 p.m. Using an interview style format, Spud discusses current, educational and entertaining topics with his special guests. What’s more, the show is a genuine McConnell family affair, with wife Maureen as the producer, daughter Alice as associate producer, and children Jack and Annie as production assistants. A devoted family man, McConnell loves spending time with his wife and three children, but to have them together on the set of “The Spudcast,” well that’s just lagniappe from heaven. Looking ahead, “Spud and Mo” are working on a number of new projects. McConnell explains, “We have several irons in the fire, things in the works that look pretty promising.” For now, McConnell isn’t talking about their speculative plans and won’t say what the nature of their next venture may be. Yet as eager fans await in curious anticipation, one thing is for sure: Whether he’s on radio, stage, film or television, New Orleans still “loves dat Spud!”

DON’T BE AFRAID OF FALLING IN YOUR HOME! THERE ARE PRECAUTIONS THAT YOU CAN TAKE TO PREVENT FALLS:

• Do exercises to improve your balance and leg strength. • Make sure shoes are fitted properly and laces are tied • Ask your doctor to review your medicines. Some medicines can make you dizzy or sleepy. • Use nightlights in hallways or bathrooms

According to the National Safety Council, June is recognized as National Safety Awareness Month. During this month, thousands of organizations focus on reducing leading causes of injury and death at work, on the roads and in our homes and communities. Safety is a choice we all make to ensure a healthy and prosperous life. Whether it's taking to our children about texting and driving, assisting family members with the right medication choices, fall-proofing the home as an older adult, or fire safety, we're all empowered to make safe decisions for ourselves and those we care about. The two major causes for injuries in the home for adults 65 and older are falls and fires. Listed below are some helpful hints to protect yourself and loved one from injuries. One in 3 older adults will fall each year. Falls can be a life-changing event leading to less mobility, independence and even death. According to the Home Safety Council, an average of nearly 5,000 Americans age 65 and older die from fall-related injuries in their homes each year. Hip fractures are a major cause of disability or death among older adults.

• Get your vision checked by an eye doctor at least every 1-2 years. Update your glasses with vision changes. • Make your home safer. For example, add grab bars inside and outside your bathtub or shower, remove throw rugs that can be a trip hazard. • Place lip resistant mats in the shower or bathtubs

Prepare for Fire Emergencies. Older adults are twice as likely to suffer injuries or lose their lives in a fire than the general population, according to the Home Safety Council. THE FOLLOWING TIPS ARE SUGGESTED FOR FIRE SAFETY:

• Make sure there is a least one working fire alarm on each level of the home, located inside or near sleeping areas. Change the batteries annually. • Create a home escape plan. If possible, move the bedroom to the first floor for easier escape outside in case of a fire. • Keep hallways clear and make sure doors and windows open easily.

• Keep a phone in the bedroom to call for help if necessary. • Always stay in the kitchen when food is cooking on the stove and avoid loose clothing while cooking. • Smokers should use large, deep ashtrays on a sturdy table and stay alert while smoking. • Plug only one cord into each electrical outlet and unplug appliances when not in use.

HURRICANE PREPAREDNESS 101 June 1st marks the start of hurricane season. We are all too well aware of the forces of nature that involve hurricanes—record rainfall, extensive flooding, and power outages, getting displaced from family and friends. For many of us have aging parents with medical needs that often times require preparation. Keep your aging parent safe and ensure you have peace of mind. Have an evacuation plan. Here are 10 tips you should take to ensure you and your senior parent or loved one stays safe during this season: 1. SIGN UP FOR LOCAL ALERTS AND WARNINGS There are

3. COLLECT & PROTECT DOCUMENTS Preparing for a hurricane or

storm should take place months ahead. In case of flooding, make sure copies of deeds, personal identification, insurance policies, social security cards, & birth certificates should be in one place, ideally protected in plastic and easily transportable. As an extra suggestion you can make electronic copies of each and add the documents to a USB drive and place the USB file in a safety deposit box. There are even Cloud storages available online.

4. MEDICATION PREP Ask your doctor and pharmacist for an extra

different types of alerts and warnings that you can receive about weather conditions and other emergency situations. Check with your local health department or emergency management agency to see how they share emergency information, whether it is through emergency texts, phone calls, digital road signs, social media, or sirens. You can even download an emergency app from FEMA, The Red Cross, or the Weather Channel.

month’s supply of medication. If power and roads are not accessible, having an extra supply of medication will give you a little time to re-establish yourself if you are unable to return home right away. Make sure if you are on oxygen you have extra bottles on hand. Remember in the event of an emergency, insulin can still be used if loss of refrigeration for up to 28 days, but keep in a cool place if at all possible. Extreme temperatures will affect its effectiveness. Do not attempt to freeze your insulin, it will no longer be good.

2. CREATE A LIST OF CONTACTS Write a list of resources and contact information. Preparing for a loss of power for several days or weeks should be expected and you may not have access to a computer or cell phone. Write down inportant numbers.

5. PREPARE FOR PETS Make sure all of your pets’ immunizations are up to date. Make arrangements in another city with a veterinarian or boarding facility if you chose to evacuate. Communication should be done in advance. Stock up on food and water for their pets? Public shelters will not accept pets.

Have all loose furniture or yard items placed indoors or a protected area. Make sure all debris is removed from the yard and old branches are trimmed away from the house. 7. PREPARE TO LEAVE IN AN INSTANT Assemble a to-go kit in case of

evacuation to a shelter or hospital. This kit should include two pairs of clean clothes, an extra set of eyeglasses, hand sanitizer/personal hygiene products, medications, personal documents, and possibly travelers’ checks or cash.

8. PREPARE FOR BANKING NEEDS Always have cash on hand not just

credit cards. If there is a lose of electricity the credit cards machines will not work. If you use a local bank, check to see if there is a sister bank where in your evactuation area where you can receive money or set up online banking. Remember ATM’s will run out of money in an evacuation situation. If you plan to use credit cards, let your credit card company know that you will be out of town, or may have unfamiliar charges.

9. PREPARE YOUR VEHICLE Now is the time for a check up. Keep your

vehicle in good running condition, with a full tank of gas. Get an oil change, check fluid levels and tire pressure, long back ups in hot weather can cause

your car to overheat and you do not want to be stranded on the highway. Park your car at higher ground and fill the gas tank. An emergency vehicle kit should include: • A battery-powered radio • Maps • Flashlight • Bottled water • Extra batteries • Shovel • Blankets • Tire-repair kit and pump • Jumper cables • Fire extinguisher and flares 10. KNOW THE PLAN If you or your parents are residents of an assisted living facility or nursing home, ask for a copy of the emergency evacuation plan. Understanding if and when relocation might take place, that proper backup generators are present, and that staff levels will be safely maintained should be top of mind.

From Baths to Biscuits So Heather, what goes on in those grooming appointments at Good Dog Legacy? Whether cat or dog, grooming is a basic necessity for all pets. Grooming is a service we provide that will help the overall happiness and health of your pet. We provide it, in a no stress environment to keep your furry kids healthy, happy and looking their best. Here are a few things that grooming provides by Heather Galfano Senior Pet Groomer at Good Dog Legacy.

THE BATH A bath is just a bath you say, but to

groomers it’s so much more. It is vital to use the correct shampoo. We use a Tea Tree and Aloe Vera shampoo on pets with sensitive skin to put some moisture back into their coat. We do not use oatmeal shampoo in case of a yeast issue, because it actually feeds the yeast. Our citrus shampoo is also a good all-around shampoo. It is also very important to make sure every last ounce of shampoo is rinsed from your pet’s coat. If residue is left it can irritate the skin causing hot spots and other skin issues. A clean collar is imprtant as well. Either bring a fresh collar in with them or throw the collar in the tub while they’re getting bathed!

THE BLOW OUT Our bath and blow out is

not simply just that. During this process we will make sure your pet is completely clean, completely dry, and either deshedded for shorted hair dogs and matt free for fluffier pets.

Pg. 26

We use high velocity dryers, which actually blow the moisture out of the pet’s coat without using heat. By using these dryers, the undercoat is blown out of the pet’s coat effectively deshedding them in a way brushing never can. The other benefit of these dryers is the ability to see every inch of the pet’s skin so that we can inform you of any underlying issues that may not have been seen with all the hair.

THE NAIL TRIM Nail trimming is usually a

scary thing for pets and owners! Whether your pet has never had his nails trimmed before or has had a bad experience elsewhere, we will do our best to keep them calm and give them a positive experience here. It is very important to keep your pet’s nails short. Having long nails will actually push your pets’ toes off the ground, which throws off their balance. We both clip and grind the nails so that the rough edges won’t scratch you or your pet after the trimming.

EAR CLEANING It is essential to keep your

pet’s ears cleaned because bacteria can build up and cause ear infections. This can cause your dog to shake his head to relive or “itch” the pain or cause physical scratch at the ears. Both of these things can cause various health issues such as ears being scratched to bleed or cause hematomas that can balloon up and require a medical procedure to fix it.

At Good Dog Legacy we make every effort to make every grooming experience comfortable and positive for both pet and owner. Feel free to come by our facility and have a look at our grooming area. If you feel that with these tips you can wash your pet yourself, we have a do-it-yourself bath area so the mess stays here instead of your bathroom at home! As always if you have any questions or would like to book an appointment with any of our wonderful groomers please call us at (985) 871-5222.
