Welcome to the Neighbourhoods of Metro Vancouver. We now have ten guides. See our website to read them all. This is where the locals shop. It is for both locals and visitors alike and always well received by new Vancouverites.

East Vancouver is larger than most realize. Its official boundaries are from Boundary Road in the east to Ontario Street in the west and from Marine Drive in the south to Hastings Street in the north. There are several skytrain stations on the eastside, Joyce-Collingwood, Rupert Street, Renfrew Street, Commercial Drive and Main Street. There are several new community centres located on the eastside: Creekside, Mt. Pleasant, Hillcrest, Trout Lake, Kensington, Killarney, Champlain Heights and Sunset.

Not many people know that the youth band movement in Canada started in Vancouver in 1933. In the early sixties band became an accredited course in Vancouver high schools and ever since wonderful music programs have thrived all over Metro Vancouver. We want to tell you about some of them in a segment we call Musical Moments.

Our guides are meant to be taken with you as you visit each neighbourhood.

So get out and explore the neighbourhoods of Vancouver’s eastside.

Little India Meets Bollywood

Between 48th and 51st Avenue on Main Street, highlighted with special street signs, you will find the Punjabi Market. This neighbourhood is home to Vancouvers’ East Indian community. The market has the highest concentration of jewelers in Canada and the prices are always open for bargaining.

People from India are said to have a sweet tooth and an amazing collection of sweets are available to satisfy every taste at the Punjabi Market. Kulfi is a widely acceptable dessert, a sort of Indian representation of ice cream. Rasgullas are another popular type of dessert; sweet little balls of rose-flavored cream cheese. Most of the Kabobs, which we relish these days, originated in the northern part of India. They are believed to have been brought into India through a Persian connection. Besides foods, the market is home to a collection of designer wear shops selling beautiful cloths and fabrics, sarees and other items.

Punjabi Market

Over the years the neighbourhood has become increasingly popular among the estimated greater than 160,000 South Asian residents in the city as a focal point for culture and commerce. There are a number of Indian restaurants, sweet shops, and grocers representing cuisine from varying parts of the subcontinent; as well as other businesses that cater to an Indo-Canadian community and

alike. The market has become a shopping destination for many weddings because of the numerous Indian ethnic clothing and bridal goods that are available. There is also a significant number of jewelry stores lining the strip, said to be the highest concentration of jewellers in the nation. The local Sikh Temple celebrates Vaisakhi each year in April. Festivities include a parade, where over 200,000 people come together to celebrate the birth of the Sikh religion. Many restaurants and households near the strip offer local food tasting.

Pindi Jewellers has been located on Main Street near 49th Avenue for over 15 years. They specialize in 22k and 24k gold, diamond, silver, white gold jewellery and lucky earth stones. They have jewellery for weddings, receptions, ladies parties, birthday gifts and Shagun; jewellery for all occasions.

Their yellow and white gold comes from Dubai, Singapore, India, and Pakistan. They can serve you in either English, Punjabi, or Hindi and are open from 11am until 7pm, 7 days a week. There is FREE parking on the street outside just south of 49th on the east side of the street in FRONT of our store.

Gold jewellery is in exceptionally high demand as the price of gold has skyrocketed over the past few years. Gold is seen as a safe investment and gold jewellery can serve more than one purpose. Besides being attractive, it will prove a safe investment over the years to come.

Vancouver Celebrates Diwali is an annual South Asian arts & culture festival celebrating the Diwali holiday. It is intended for all cultures and communities. Every year this growing Vancouver event has shown increasing interest from the general public, with over 7,300 people participating in the 2010 festival. Several events and activities are planned over the course of this week-long Festival, most of which are free and open to the entire general public. Diwali is a time to celebrate the universal light that exists in everyone, so come “Light Your Spirit!”

The goal of the Diwali Celebration Society is

* To expand the celebration of Diwali by including a broad community of South Asians and non-South Asians in all events;

• To celebrate the diversity of South Asian art forms by showcasing artists who practice in a variety of disciplines, and giving them an opportunity to present their work to a range of audiences;

• To break cultural barriers and encourage participation, allowing all communities to experience the Diwali spirit and learn the traditions of their friends and neighbors;

• To explore how traditional South Asian arts evolve into fusion forms in the context of new countries and contemporary values;

Indian Gold Jewellery

Gold is known to be nearest to the heart of every women; the glitter of gold makes women happy more than anything else. Women all over the world love to wear gold jewellery; it is the prized possession that she keeps with utmost care. India in the past was often referred to as the jewel of the east. If we take a walk down the country’s historic past, we will find that Indian jewelry is very much a part of its unique history and dates back to ancient times when elegant and intricate Indian gold jewelry was designed and crafted for its pantheon of gods. India was often known to be the land of gold, jewels and pearls in the past.

Among the gold jewellery items, Indian jewellery is the most famous and highly rated. The Indian tradition and culture mixes very well with golden jewelry and replicates its past heritage. When the British ruled India the East India Company used to trade for Indian gold, silver, diamond and other gems and pearls of which India was famous. The famous Kohinoor Diamond which used to be on the minars of Taj Mahal was taken away by the British during its rule in India.

Vaisakhi

Vancouverites have two Vaisakhi Parades to choose from: the Vancouver Vaisakhi Parade happening in April 2022, which attracts about 50,000 spectators, and the annual Surrey Vaisakhi Parade and Celebration also in April, which attracts 80,000 - 200,000, making it one of the largest Vaisakhi parades outside India.

The parade starts at 11am at the Ross Street Temple (8000 Ross St at 64th), moves south on Ross Street to SE Marine Drive, then west to Main Street, north to 49th Avenue, east to Fraser Street, south to 57th Avenue, east to Ross Street and then returns to the Temple.

The nagar kirtan truly is a community event. The generousity of the community can be seen with people giving free food along the streets, sharing, helping each other, singing and walking in the parade. Families get together wearing traditional clothes from far and wide. Businesses and other community organizations are commonly seen sharing and giving at their booths or on floats. The sikh community is proud of their accomplishments in Canada and the nagar kirtan is a day of sharing and giving. Children are taught their culture and pride instilled in them.

10 Most Interesting Things To Do

Take a walk down the main street of the market and enjoy the colorful Sarees, people and families in this multi cultural neighborhood. Closed Tuesday!

Be sure to visit the Punjabi Market during Vaisakhi in April. There is a parade that winds its way up Main Street through the centre of the market with floats and music. There is no end to the wonderful jewellery shops located in the market. You can purchase many gold items as well as watches, necklaces, rings and other accessories.

If you like sweets you must visit the Himalaya Restaurant. Their selection of sweet delicacies is unmatched. Their restaurant also serves traditional Indian cuisine.

Another fine restaurant is All India Sweets Restaurant. One of the finest Indian Restaurants in Vancouver they are located on the east side of Main south of 49th Avenue.

If you like to cook exotic dishes with lots of spices and other special ingredients drop into the Punjabi Food Centre. They offer a wide selection of spices.

There are many fine fabric and cloth houses in the market.

There are many fine specialty shops and services in the market. Just a short walk should bring you past most of them. There is also an insurance company S & S Insurance.

If you take a walk up 50th Avenue towards Cambie (West) you will arrive at Langara College (Two blocks). A walk through the campus can be quite rewarding. Just beside Langara College is the Langara Golf Course. This is one of Vancouver’s three publicly owned courses. There is a 7.2 Km walking and jogging path as well that circles the course and is great even in the rain!

Be sure to visit the new Sunset Community Centre on Main Street between 51st and 52nd Avenues.

Langara College

Langara College courses and programs were first offered in 1965 at King Edward Centre as part of Vancouver City College. The current site at West 49th Avenue has housed the programs since 1970.

Langara College was established as an independent public college under the Provincial College and Institute Act on April 1, 1994. Langara College Continuing Studies, established in 1997 and honoured for excellence in 2002 by the Learning Resources Network (LERN), an international association of lifelong learning, continues to

enjoy tremendous growth and success. In 1997, a new classroom and office building was opened to address the space needs on the campus, and in September 2007, the new Library/Classroom building opened its doors. langara.bc.ca

Sunset Community Centre

In 1945, the people of Sunset had a vision to build a new community centre. They started by forming a Community Association with the task of creating a new recreation facility in South Vancouver. How could the association raise another $100,000.00 when it took two years to raise $25,000.00? The community needed to do something big.

Stan Thomas, President of the Sunset Association in 1947, was sent to Hollywood California to convince Bing Crosby to stage his radio show in Vancouver as a benefit for the construction of Sunset Community Centre. Bing Crosby was the most famous celebrity of his time selling #1 records, starring in popular Hollywood movies and he had the most listened to radio program in North America. Imagine Stan Thomas stepping into his car one rainy October morning to ask this international superstar to come to Vancouver for a benefit fundraiser. What do you think Bing’s response was? Yes! On September 21, 1948 the Bing Crosby Radio Show came to Vancouver and over $26,000.00 was raised in one performance. Following the program, the City of Vancouver contributed the remaining amount and Sunset Community Centre was built.

The people of Sunset are a people with a vision. They take risks and they acheive their goals. Today, Sunset Community Centre is over 50 years old and and has just been replaced in 2007, with a new structure 2 blocks east on the Park Board’s Nursery lands along Main Street between 51st and 53rd Avenues.

Home of theAll Canadian Superstore

Located at the corner of Main and Marine are a collection of stores, a White Spot and just to the east of Main Street, the All Canadian Superstore. In a little mall you will find H2O a great source for bottled water, a health/herb pharmacy selling a wide range of products, and a restaurant. Around the corner on Main Street is a Bank of Montreal. Kiddy corner in the gas station is a small White Spot.

Heading east on Marine Drive about 100 yards there are several small stores and eateries located inside the All Canadian Superstore including a Subway and an internet/mail/office accessories store. Also inside is an insurance company and a hairdresser. Stop by and have a look! Back on Marine heading east before Fraser Street is the new Intercity Animal Emergency Clinic located next to another Subway Restaurant.

Real Canadian Superstore is a chain of hypermarkets owned by Canadian food retailing giant Loblaw Companies. Its name is often shortened to RCSS or Superstore.

Originating in Western Canada in the early 1990s, the banner expanded into Ontario in the early 2000s as Loblaw attempted to fend off competition from department stores including U.S.-based Wal-Mart.

The stores carry a variety of goods (like Fred Meyer or Wal-Mart Supercentres,) but the vast majority of space is devoted to groceries and about a third of each store is set aside for electronics, housewares, and clothing. Items in the latter two categories are mainly from Loblaw’s private labels, (President’s Choice, Life at Home, or Joe Fresh.) As with many Loblaw stores, they offer corporate-branded services such as PhotoLab photo finishing and DrugStore pharmacies.

Loblaws is working to cut costs and compete effectively with this multi-format store. Each store has a similar layout, useful for both cost efficiency and shopper ease. Also, in an effort to cater to individual customer segments, Superstore buys specific products for different regions. Superstore locations now top 210,000 square feet. Drop by and see our newly renovated store on Marine Drive, between Main Street and Fraser Street.

Sandwiches are made right before your eyes and are served on Italian, Wheat and a variety of seasoned breads, baked daily in each restaurant.

Home To Antiques Shops, Vintage & Sports Venues

The Riley Park area of East Vancouver (25th to 33rd) is a bee hive of activity. On Main Street several antiques shops mingle with newer avant garde clothing stores and thrift shops. Off Main Street to the west at Riley Park, home of the Nat Bailey Stadium where pro baseball has been played since 1951, the new Millenium

Centre is now located. A former Olympic venue, Hillcrest Community Centre has a new multiindoor swimming pool which replaces the old one in the former Riley Community Centre. This ever changing neighborhood deserves a walk through whenever you are in the area and do not forget Queen Elizabeth Park which the locals call ‘Little Mountain.’

Seriously outstanding chicken! I’ve been eyeing this joint for alittle while now since they opened and we made our way for some take-out over the weekend!

I got the crispy chicken wings for around $15 - they’re quite big and so so tasty! Perfectly crunchy, the batter is super flavourful but not heavy or too much. I also got soy garlic sauce on the side and sweet n spicy on the side to try the different sauces and both were tangy and delish! 5/5 chicken experience all around and boy do I eat a ton of fried chicken. Millennium Sports Centre

World class athletes will now have another venue to train at, with the official opening of the brand new $7.4 million Millennium Sports Centre. Located beside Nat Bailey stadium, this facility houses a top-notch gymnastics training centre, an international standard 6-rink indoors bowls green, and several multipurpose community rooms.

“The Millennium Sports Centre exemplifies what can be achieved through partnership between governments and communities,” said Minister Emerson. “The Government of Canada is committed to developing sustainable, prosperous and vibrant communities now and for future generations.”

“The Millennium Sports Centre is the foundation for years of athletic opportunity for local youth as well as Olympic contenders,” notes Minister Owen. “By offering sports and recreational opportunities to the entire community, the new facility will also foster the development of active and healthy lifestyles among people of all ages.”

The Millennium Sport Facility Society led the organization and planning of the 44,000 square foot sports centre. The Society recognized the need for a modern sports training facility and spearheaded the fundraising campaign.

Hillcrest Aquatic Centre

Hillcrest Aquatic Centre is the largest aquatic facility in the city. This indoor/ outdoor aquatic centre opened in the summer of 2010 and is equipped with an indoor pool, an outdoor pool, and a fitness center. It is part of the newly opened Hillcrest Centre, a legacy of the 2010 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games.

Home To Vintage Fashions

This part of Main Street from about 19th Avenue up to 21st Avenue is home to several fashion boutiques, a tea house, a fresh produce store, a delicatessan and an assortment of specialty stores. Like all neighborhoods in Vancouver it changes from one year to the next. Fashion boutiques include barefoot contessa, front and company. Food stores include the Continental Sausage Company, Organic Acres and Shaktea for something warm on a winter’s day. The Soap Dispensary is a unique specialty store full of healthy alternatives. The Fish counter is a great place to buy fresh fish or to just eat fish & chips on the other side. There is even an optometrist here called Eye Pod Eyecare.Vancouver Special is a nice modern furnishings store. If you get hungry try Coco & Olive or Cultivate Tea Room just down Main Street. An eclectic neighborhood!

John Oliver Secondary School

Ron Pajala started the band program at John Oliver around 1962. Ron had been a member of the Kitsilano Boys Band. Over twenty years he developed the band program which won several first place awards in the Kiwanis Music Festival and made several tours. In his later yearsat John Oliver he took them to Europe just as he had gone on a band trip to Europe with the Kitsilano Boys Band.

Teo Repel was the award winning choral director at John Oliver for many years starting about 1956. His choirs won many, many awards at our local music festivals and were always the ones to beat. They consistently placed as the top choral groups in Vancouver and BC. His Brahms Choirs and Apollo Boys Choirs were legendary.

Next, the music program at John Oliver was run by Eric Tsang who is also a member of the 15th Field Regiment Band. Eric tried to re-establish the lustre of the good old days of the John Oliver music program. In 2016, Eric held a concert celebrating Teo Repel’s 100th birthday, then retired in 2019. Jason de couto is now in charge of the music program.

ASouth Hill Delight

Fraser Village is one of Vancouver’s oldest neighbourhoods. It is located between 39th Avenue and 51st Avenue on Fraser Street. In the 1950s, fifteen cent stores and ice cream parlours could be found around 45th Avenue. Now adays they have given way to a more eclectic mixture of Asian and East Indian restaurants, boutiques and yuppie coffee houses. You use to be able to drive the Fraser slope, across Marine Drive and over two bridges that would take you onto the farmlands of Richmond. That was before 1959 when the Deas Tunnel was built

The bridges were removed shortly after the opening of the tunnel and Fraser Street now comes to a halt a couple of blocks past Marine Drive. So much for progress!

The newly constructed Mason Block at 46th Avenue is a sign of good things to come for the merchants and home owners of Fraser Village. More construction is on the way with condos being built above new retail businesses. A nice neighborhood with lots of parks.

This is a great neighborhood to shop for fruit and vegetables in the Indian and Chinese markets. The prices are great!

The past lives on in the memories of us older Vancouverites. What started as a dream has become a reality for Devere and Natalie Stine. They had always dreamed of owning their own coffee shop. Having once lived in the Fraserview area, they were familiar with the shops in the neighborhood and the long German tradition still being carried on by the previous owner Hans Buchholtz and his Fraser Bakery & Konditorrei. A long time tradition in the village, when they heard that Hans was interested in selling, things were set in motion and before long they found themselves the proud owners of a traditional bakery that needed lots of upgrading. The Hub of South Hill

The new hub of the southside, Fraser Street at 49th Avenue, is also known as South Hill. A new downtown is emerging in this part of the city. At 10 o’clock at night you can sit and watch the people go by from either Starbucks or Breka. People coming and going, getting on and off the buses. It is like being on Davie Street or in Yaletown. The coffee shops often have a line up at 10 o,clock at night. There is no Canada Line or Skytrain, just criss-crossing buses. There is more hustle and bustle on this corner at all hours than in many other parts of the city.

The uniqueness of the markets on Fraser Street is quite apparent. There are several East Indian grocers plying their trade as well as a couple of Chinese grocers. One offers delicacies such as roast duck in an almost chinese fast food outlet style, similar to food courts in the malls.

Memorial Park is located a block off Fraser on 41st. and extends along to 44th Avenue. This beautiful neighborhood park has a real track oval that all can use. In summer, watch softball!

You can learn to dance from the pros at Dance Co on Fraser. Lessons are given to beginners alike. Check them out between 41st and 43rd in the old Fraser Bowling Alley building.

Want to learn Karate? Fraser River Karate is located at 6445 Fraser. All levels are welcome. If you ever had aspirations that you once were Bruce Lee maybe it’s time to look into it.

A Maxim’s Bakery is located on Fraser near 47th avenue. Prices are good and the pastries seem to contain less sugar than most other bakeries.

Rokko Sarees & Fabrics has one big location on Fraser Street, at 46th Avenue on the corner. It is well known in the village for their beautiful cloth fabrics and usually very busy.

At 49th, take a walk west for about a half a block and you will come across the Universal Buddhist Temple. Its interesting architecture makes it well worth a stop. Enquire to go inside.

Sunset Memorial Park is located two blocks west of Fraser on 51st Avenue. Check their programs. They also have a community centre on Main Street and an indoor ice rink.

About three blocks East of Fraser, just South of 63rd Avenue you will find the Sikh Temple. If you drop by at noon hour they will treat you to a free lunch.

There are several East Indian grocers in this neighbourhood. Their prices are all far below Safeway and other larger food chains. Try going back to the Sikh Temple on Marine @ Ross Street for an evening meal of Eastern delights, all free of course. Everyone is very friendly and quite welcoming.

Mountain View Cemetery

When Mountain View Cemetery opened in 1887, it supplanted burial grounds in what was designated Stanley Park that same year as the city’s cemetery. The original parcel of land is now known as the “Old Cemetery” is bounded by Fraser Street on the east, 37th Avenue on the south, 33rd on the north, and a row of tall trees on the west. Land on the north of this was purchased in 1901 for an expansion from the Horne family, which became the “Horne I Addition.”

The Jones farm on the south was added in 1910 as the Jones I and Jones II Additions, and in 1922, the Horne II was acquired on the west. The “1919 Addition” is a tract bounded by 41st and 43rd Avenues, and contains many victims of the Spanish flu pandemic that took many hundreds of lives of local residents. The final addition is the Abray Park Addition on the western side, acquired in 1941 and named after a squatter who previously lived on the land and tended an orchard and grazed cattle there. Burial sites historically were often grouped together along the lines of religion (e.g., Jewish), nationality (e.g., Chinese and Japanese), or organizational affiliation (e.g., Freemasons and Oddfellows). Other groupings are pauper grave sites and war veterans.

The cemetery also has Canadian military graves. The Commonwealth War Graves Commission maintains the graves of 578 Commonwealth service personnel - 319 from World War I and 259 from World War II. The war graves of the former war are in a special Soldiers’ Plot, while those of the latter are either concentrated in a Veterans’ Plot or scattered within the cemetery. Most of the airmen died serving at the Royal Canadian Air Force base at Sea Island, and many sailors were from the H.M.C.S. Discovery naval station of the Royal Canadian Navy Volunteer Reserve.

The cemetery contains the remains of many notable occupants: Harry Churchill Beet, Henry O. Bell-Irving, Edward Evans Blackmore, Lieutenant-Colonel Alfred Carey, William Carey Ditmars, Charles Edgar Edgett, Joe Fortes, a.k.a., “Old Black Joe,” Samuel Greer, Eric Hamber, Laurence William Herchmar.

My Greek Barber’s Diary

The heartwarming true story of how one man influenced so many over the course of his lifetime.

Born in a small village in Militsa, Greece in 1935, George Chronopoulos lived through the Nazi occupation of Greece in World War II and the Greek Civil War of 1944 - 1949. In the early days his village had no electricity yet his family lived like kings on their farm.

His father decided that he would become a barber in Pilos, where he had moved as a young boy to be by the sea for health

reasons. It wasn’t long before he moved to Kalamata and then to Athens where he eventually joined the army. Because he was a barber he was in great demand in the army and got to know Generals and others in high command. After the army everyone was leaving Greece, so his father said, “If you want to go, I do not mind,” and he too emigrated, to Montreal.

In Montreal he married a girl from back home, Voula. He learned how to do the latest in styles and razor cuts from the guys in Montreal, Perry Como Style, Hollywood Style and in 1960 they moved to Vancouver.

His first job in Vancouver was at the Hotel Vancouver Barber Shop for three days. Next, he moved to a small shop at 41st & Oak. “I’ve got the best barber in town,” bragged the owner. It wasn’t long before Gus Lloyd spotted him and hired him for his Waverly Barber Shop on Georgia Street. Jack Wasserman wrote about him, “There is a new guy in town who does styles for men. Men’s hairdos.” Lots of business types came into the Waverly and the lifestyle was contagious. Seeing himself as an entrepreneur, he went into partnership with Gus, they bought a building on Richards Street and opened the Bouzouki Greek Coffee Shop (continued see p 134).

AVery Sweet Neighbourhood!

The neighbourhood along Fraser Street travelling south after Kingsway is gradually becoming a place to shop in its own right. There is a freshly made beef jerky shop selling home-made beef jerky, BKH Jerky and right at Kingsway before heading up Fraser Street is the new Sal y Limon which offers Tortas, Tacos and Burritos. Other businesses include Kids Physio Group, Bells & Whistles, a fitness gym and a computer company called Intertech. It is also home to the Glad Tidings Temple, a gospel community. A Sikh temple is located here as well. There is room for other businesses as a condo development has just been completed with leased stres underneaath, so it is definitely a neighbourhood to keep an eye on as it changes and grows. Easy to get to by just take the Fraser Street bus from either direction. Little Kitchen Academy is now located at 24th Avenue.

Sal y Limon – we know you’re going to ask so here’s the skinny – is pronounced like “Sal E Leemon” and it means salt and lime (of course it does!). This vibrant Mexican restaurant is the brainchild of two couples – Carolina and Sebastien, Adriana and Pepe – who want to share their passion for authentic Mexican cuisine.

Every restaurant has walls. And walls need pictures. The restaurant really came together for the partners when they blended casual dining with the concept of an art gallery. Throughout the year, the walls of Sal y Limon restaurant will showcase the works of Mexican artists.

They also sell other Vietnamese items as well, such as rice dishes, noodle plates and desserts. However, most customers come for the cheap subs! Ba Le’s not the type of sub shop to dine-in as it’s a small space, so order you sandwiches to-go. There are a few varieties to choose from such as grilled pork, grilled beef, chicken and Vietnamese ham. On this visit, we ordered a total of four banh mi sandwiches and a pudding for dessert: Two Cold Cut banh mi subs ($3 each), two Special banh mi subs ($3.25 each), and a Tapioca Cup.

Killarney Community Centre

The staff and volunteers of Killarney Community Centre are dedicated to offering quality leisure services to the community at large. We understand the cultural diversity of the community and work to bridge the gaps that exist between different people, by bringing them together in recreational activities. Inclusiveness and access for all are important aspects of our service delivery.

Killarney Community Centre proper, swimming pool and ice rink were officially opened on September 14, 1963 by the Vancouver Park Board and the Killarney Community Centre Society. The Community Centre proper received a complete refurbishment during 1998-1999. This redevelopment allowed the centre to tre to expand its service delivery to a growing community by adding more lounge space, 2 new childcare facilities, and a fitness centre.

In February of 2006, the new Killarney Leisure Pool opened. The pool is an $11 million destination leisure aquatic facility, serving all Vancouver residents with public swim hours offered throughout most of the day. This beach-style entry, funfilled complex with magnificent views of the North Shore mountains, has ozone treated water, a giant water slide, delightful spray and play features for all ages including a “lazy river,” a 25 metre lap pool, 15 metre warm lap pool, whirlpool, steamroom and is wheelchair accessible.

Killarney Secondary School Music Program

Len Lythgoe started the band program at Killarney in the early 1960s. Al Wiens was the director from 1964 through 1966. The choral director was J. Nelson. During the years that followed from 1966 through 1988, the person who directed the Killarney band program had the only high school marching band in Greater Vancouver. Brian Knapp was the director of bands from 1981 until he retired in 2010. Today the band program director is Angela Toth. The choral director is Lisa Reimer.

While Bryan Knapp was teaching at Killarney, the school had one of the largest and finest music programs in Canada with over 1,000 students enrolled in Band, Choir, Strings, and Music Technology. His groups have always received the highest awards and honors as a model band program in BC and Canada. The Killarney groups toured extensively and have performed throughout the world in such places as: The Vatican (Rome), The Duomo (Florence), St. Maria Cathedral (Sienna), The Heidelberg Castle (Germany), MusicFest Canada, Rocky Mountain Festival, World Music Olympics (Los Angeles), the Beijing International Music Festival (2004) hosted by the Chinese Government and numerous National Television appearances in Canada and China.

Killarney Secondary School

At 49th Avenue and Victoria Drive you find a wide selection of businesses. On the corner is the Medicine Shoppe Pharmacy. There was a wonderful neighbourhood eatery called aptly Neighbour’s Restaurant and Pizza House, located on the the westside of Victoria Drive at 6493 Victoria. They have just moved down to 35th Avenue. Family owned and operated, they serve homemade recipes in a warm and friendly atmosphere. When the Tsoukas family first opened it doors in 1982, they hoped to give this quaint neighbourhood a place that all could come whether it be a romantic dinner for two, a special celebration, or just a night out with the family. At various levels and understanding it is family that is at the heart of Neighbour’s Restaurant.

A Mixture Of Cultures

Victoria Drive runs from Marine Drive north past Kingsway and then becomes a residential street. Shopping is concentrated around: 54th avenue for two or three blocks; then at about 51st avenue stores return until a few blocks past 49th. The shopping district returns two blocks before 41st and runs down to 33rd avenue. The 41st avenue shopping area is largely Asian food stores, jewellery and herb

stores; some nice bakeries here as well. On the other side of 41st there is a small shopping mall with a London Drugs, a MacDonalds and a Rogers Video. More Asian stores as you move down the street. Just before 33rd avenue is a European shopping area with a bakery, several meat stores and a Halal Meats and Seafood.

Little Chinatown

Much has changed on Victoria Drive over the last decade, especially the area close to the intersection of Victoria Drive and East 41st Avenue. Not only have Asian businesses become abundant, but this area has become very central to the South Vancouver neighbourhood. However, “Little Chinatown” is probably only going to resemble Chinatown to an extent, and will always show diversity in its businesses because of the market that it must accomodate. Unless over the next several decades, some extreme form of chain migration happens that brings all the Chinese into this South Vancouver neighbourhood, Victoria Drive will simply be a somewhat Chinese-dominant, yet still multicultural, East Vancouver neighbourhood.

A Seniors Hub is coming to YOUR Cedar Cottage neighbourhood! A Seniors Hub is a collaborative community-based model that supports seniors’ independence and active participation in their community. Comprised of a network of seniors, local organizations and businesses, the common goal of a Seniors Hub is to engage and serve seniors. Seniors lead, govern, identify needs, and organize activities that meet those needs.

Neighbourly Together: Connecting Seniors to the Community

Neighbourly Together is a new service offered at Cedar Cottage Neighbourhood House. This program connects seniors to community programs and services to help them stay healthy in mind and body, and age in place.

Neighbourly Together volunteers receive twelve hours of training in peer support, effective listening, conflict resolution, etc. From canvassing their neighbourhoods to answering questions at community events, volunteers help create a culture of care for seniors in our community.

Visit Deer Island Bakery at 41st. Avenue. For repaying customers and making sure the breads are fresh everyday, all kinds of bread are 18% off from 5-7 pm daily. Subject to availability. We are located next to Wescana Pharmacy. The Calabria Meat Market (not the bakery people) is for those with exotic tastes. Fresh Wild Boar meat, Wild Boar sausage, fresh Baby Lamb, Baby Goat, Deer meat, Buffalo meat and Rabbit.

As in most neighborhoods there are several good places to dine. On the drive some good ones are Mui Garden, Jiang’s Restaurant, and the Golden Swan Restaurant at 37th and Neighbours at 35th.

If you’re lucky enough to visit around Halloween (October 31), Commercial Drive hosts the Night of Lost Souls - a parade honouring the dead. Lanterns, stiltwalkers, fire-breathers, and many mystical costumes are a part of this parade. It happens at night on the last Saturday before Halloween.

The York Theatre on Commercial Drive

In early 2009, The Cultch announced a partnership with Wall Financial Corporation and the City of Vancouver to rescue and restore the York Theatre. It was a once lively and then abandoned performance venue located a short walk from The Cultch on Commercial Drive. Appearing on Heritage Vancouver’s 2008 list of top 10 endangered sights, it was a building with a rich history that needed saving.

Considered to be among the oldest standing performance venues in Vancouver, the York theatre was built in 1913 by architect John McCarter. Having provided a start for many of the city’s well known acting and directing talents, as well as staging popular music acts, the York Theatre has undergone many transformations throughout its nearly hundred year existence.

The space opened in 1913 as the Alcazar Theatre to a play titled Too Much Johnson by William Gillette. Since that time, the theatre has passed through many owners, operating under a variety of names including The Palace, The Little Theatre, The York Theatre and most recently the Raja Theatre where it operated quite successfully for a time as a venue for presenting Bollywood films. It was in the early 2000’s that attendance at the Raja Theatre started to decline. This lack of business forced the owners to sell the property in 2006. Two years later, Bruno Wall of Wall Financial Corporation purchased the cherished space from a developer who had plans to tear it down.

The finished venue includes a 370 seat theatre for the proscenium stage as well as an orchestra pit. The renovations that were done to the theatre in the 1960’s have been taken down and replaced with a two story glass lobby that overlooks the street. (continued from page 82) “There was no one doing what I was doing!” He had the establishment coming to him, the Jewish Community Syd Belzberg, Leon Kahn, Irving Kates, Sid Golden, Max Fugman, Roy Cantor, Joe Segal, members of the Richmond Golf & Country Club, every CEO in town including Jimmy Pattsion and Peter Bentley all came to him through word of mouth.

In the seventies he opened a second location in the basement of the Hyatt Hotel called The Royal Riviera. He continued buying other businesses, mainly restaurants at first and later condos. He started his own painting and renovation companies. His real estate and business dealings took him first to the US and then to Britain, Switzerland, Bucharest and India.

He and Voula raised three daughters over the years and was instrumental in raising money for the Greek community through his connections and for many other charities in Vancouver and across Canada. Church and family were always foremost in his life!

How they changed the faces of Canada

Dean and Faye Leung were pioneers in blending the Chinese society with the Caucasian society in Vancouver during the 1950s, 1960s, 1970s and 1980s. They both fought the decades old discrimination in Canada against the Chinese and other minorities.

Together, they accomplished many things in the fields of banking, housing, education and probably most importantly in the field of immigtration category reform. If you are from an immigrant family who came to Canada after 1967, chances are you are here because of Faye Leung. It can probably be said that Canada is multicultural today because of the efforts of Faye Leung.

Faye was also a pioneer in establishing economic ties between Canada and China starting back in 1980, through to today, when China began to open its doors

after the Cutlural Revolution. She was the first Canadian businesswoman to be invited to China by Deng Xiaoping’s government.

The last chapter in her biography is an overview of the Fantasy Gardens boondoggle which saw the first premier in Commonwealth history forced to resign due to his own corruption. Faye is beaten up and smeared by the premier’s lawyers, then the media and made the scapegoat to keep the premier out of jail. A more in-depth look at this entire affair is included in the book.

The Office has sent down a good wizard (Meryl Streep) to rally the ghosts of Chinatown for an attack on City Hall to get the City to give Chinatown protected heritage status so it won’t disappear.
