Welcome to the neighbourhoods of Vancouver. This guide is a business diirectory to the neighbourhoods of Vancouver’s westside. It is for both locals and visitors alike and new Vancouverites just love it.
Vancouver’s westside officially extends from Ontario Street in the east, from Marine Drive in the south to Kits Beach in the north and west to and including UBC. The Canada Line skytrain runs below Cambie Street from YVR to downtown. There is talk about building one to UBC. There are two newer community centres located on the westside, Hillcrest and Creekside Community Recreation Centres.
I believe visibility is important. If you do not know about something how can you support it. The youth band movement started in Vancouver in 1933. By the 1960s wonderful music programs were established in our high schools. They still thrive today and we want to tell you about them.
Music in the Hood is the tagline. One of the nicest aspects about Vancouver is its old heritage schools located on picturesque tree lined boulevards. Built in the early 20th c, they remain a reminder of our early heritage.
This guide is more though than a business directory. We include heritage and stories from the ‘hood’ and its people. Take it with you and visit the different neighbourhoods throughout the year. Tourists love it too!
So get out side and explore your neighbourhoods. Christopher Best
The highly anticipated opening night of “Copy / Paste Culture”, a solo exhibition by Julian Thom, is October 18 from 6-10pm. The show will be open daily 11am - 6pm from October 19 through October 27th.

Convivial Cafe and Bakery is a small neighbourhood business with a strong connection to/emphasis on community. They have been instrumental in organizing and supporting community-based activities that have brought the square back to life.
Designed like a European plaza, during the summer, the space is alive on Saturday afternoons with live music of many kinds and on Thursday afternoons with a free afternoon tea and social.
Convivial is a cozy eclectic café. Almost everything is made from scratch, in-house. The scones, muffins and chocolate cookies are especially popular although regulars will tell you the soups and salads are great too. There is a story behind the much-loved pony cake, just ask. Leave a treat for another customer less fortunate on the pay-it-forward wall.

At Change, we respect your natural beauty. That’s why our lingerie doesn’t dictate how your body should look or promise a whole new you. What it will do is give you a variety of styles in a fit that feels just right. It’s all about feeling beautiful. So feel free to express yourself. To explore the different facets of your femininity. And the woman within.
This is the philosophy behind Change and the key to our success.
When we design our lingerie in Denmark and manufacture at our own factories in China, our way of thinking is that every part of the bra should support the best of every woman. And she should experience the best quality for the best price.
Pablo
A Cheesecake Unlike Any Other
“I want to make a cheesecake that no one has ever seen.”
It all started with a simple determination that sent Masamitsu Umoto, founder of Pablo, into his studio for half a year of repeated trials and errors.
The goal was to formulate a perfect recipe that would WOW the crowd.
Following strictly regulated baking methods and oven temperatures, we have successfully created our own unique cheese tarts.
And thus, Pablo’s signature product, the Freshly Baked Cheese Tart, was born!

Kearney Funeral Services has been serving Vancouver and the Lower Mainland for over 100 years. Founder Thomas P. Kearney entered the funeral business for love, hoping to be introduced to the beautiful young opera singer, Catherine, who he admired for helping her mother with grieving families at their local church. Within a few years, he was offered sole ownership of the funeral business and made a commitment to carry it on. Soon, Thomas and Catherine were married, raising three children and active partners in their funeral work. Today, their grandchildren and great-grandchildren continue the family business from three locations - 450 West 2nd Avenue in Vancouver; 219 6th Street in New Westminster;, and #1015772 176th St. in Cloverdale. Of the 15 Canadian funeral homes once located in the City of Vancouver, Kearney’s is the last to remain Canadian and familyowned. We greatly value our reputation of compassionate care and commitment to personalized service to our families. As we enter our fourth generation of service to the bereaved, we are honoured to be entrusted with the care of our communities in their greatest time of need.

What is a Cataract?
A cataract occurs when the naturally clear lens inside the eye (responsible for focusing light) becomes cloudy or opaque and blocks light from entering the eye. The result is blurry, hazy or obstructed vision. People often have difficulty seeing at night or in low light conditions. The changes in the lens can also change your eyeglass prescription making you more nearsighted or producing astigmatism. If you start to remove your glasses to read when previously you needed them for reading this could be a sign you are developing cataracts.
Cataracts are commonly associated with aging and a high amount of sun exposure over your lifetime. If during your childhood and young adulthood, you were exposed to a lot of sun and did not wear Sunglasses with 100% UV protection, you could be at risk to develop cataracts.

Rain or Shine Ice Cream
We’ve always made food a top priority on our travelling adventures. Partially to avoid getting into crisis mode (who doesn’t get h-angry) and partially to experience as many delectable treats different countries have to offer. More often than not our days exploring a new city end up revolving around tasting the unique, yummy, culinary creations different places have to offer.
We’ve been majorly inspired by some fresh, pure ingredient ice cream we’ve discovered on our trips and wished we could enjoy them in Vancouver without melting all over our suitcase…

Eric Hamber Secondary School
Ernie Colledge started the music program at Eric Hamber in 1962. “We did a lot of smaller trips to Calgary and into Washington. In Calgary we did a couple of exchanges. When I was at UBC doing my Master’s degree I met a fellow teacher Glen Farkas. He taught at Henry Wisewood in Calgary. Glen was part of the Farkas family of musicians. When I was at Gladstone later, we did a couple more trips to Calgary. I always made sure our kids were billeted. I felt it made the trips more interesting for them if they met their peers. I never took the kids on long bus trips through BC. We always flew to Calgary. We did take the bus into Washington to Seattle, Bothell and Auburn but those were shorter bus rides. There were lots of fundraising and noon hour rehearsals. We also helped raise money for the rest of the school as well. Expo 70 in Osaka, Japan would have been the biggest trip I took them on. There were only three bands endorsed by the BC government to go to Osaka, Pete Stigings at Magee, Dave Dunnett at Oak Bay High School and us.”
Today the program is still one of the best around anywhere. Past directors Mary Ellenton, Chris Robinson, Tom Koven and today Nick Francis and Les Nerling have kept the tradition alive. BOOKS * BIOGRAPHY
“By Jove What A Band”
c1934 The band in England on its first British tour. Photos: Warfleetpress.com
General Gordon Elementary School is located on Bayswater Street two blocks north of Broadway. It was here in the little yellow school house on the school grounds that the world famous Vancouver Kitsilano Boys Band was founded in 1928 by Arthur W. Delamont. Band rehearsals soon moved into the school basement when the band got bigger and continued there through fifty years of unparalleld success until the band folded in 1974. Arthur Delamont, who founded the Vancouver Kitsilano Boys Band in 1928, was a pioneer in the field of music education of our youth. He was the first to travel extensively with youth bands and to show that youths between the ages of 11 and 19 could be developed into a first class musical organization. He did this by taking first place in virtually every festival he entered, starting with the Victoria Provincial Championship in 1931. He went on to win the National Junior Band Championship title in Toronto that same year. Then in 1933, the Worlds Junior Band Championship title in Chicago. His wins were not marginal wins but without hesitation as one adjudicator remarked in Chicago. By Jove what a band’ and “there was little doubt that they totally outclassed their nearest competition,” were other adjudicators remarks. In 1934, he began taking his band to England, where he took first place in the West of England music festival
and again in 1936 at the Crystal Palace where his boys beat out 35 adult bands to take the coveted Cassells Challenge Shield
By the mid 40s, Mr. D had started no less than six school bands, from which he selected the best for his Kitsilano Band, they were the West Vancouver, North Vancouver, Grandview, Point Grey Junior High School and the General Gordon school bands. As more and more bands began to spring up in the school system, he eventually relinquished control of all but his Kitsilano Boys Band. Over the course of fifty years his band won 200 championships, made 14 European tours and attended 5 world fairs. The tours lasted from 2 to 5 months and three concerts a day were normal routine. While most bands would travel and perform only a handful of concerts on tour, his boys were hired out to perform engagements like professionals at seaside resorts through-out Britain, often booked well in advance for their next tour. His success story is filled with humor, excitement, tragedy and love. In 1914 he was a member of the Territorial Staff Band of the Salvation Army, on board the Empress of Ireland, which sank in the St. Lawrence, with a loss of over 1000. In 1939 he was in England with his boys when war was declared and had to sneak out under the cover of searchlights and balloons, zigzagging home down the coast of Africa and across the Atlantic, trying to avoid German U-boats.
His legacy is the thousands of boys who passed through his organization and the lessons they learned. Often their sons went on to play with him as well. And over the years they became the who’s who of the Canadian music establishment where his boys filled the first chairs in symphony orchestras. www.warfleetpress.ca

The variety and quality of work shown in our galleries reflects Vancouver’s sophisticated cultural and ethnic diversity. Contemporary photo based Art and BC Impressionism can be enjoyed in the same block. Canada`s most prestigious Auction House is at home here, hosting an annual auction that draws an international clientele. Rare Asian antiques play against modern sculpture or Art Nouveau bronzes. Huge cast resin bowls in vibrant colors live comfortably next to Chinese floor vases. Eighteenth century Russian oil paintings transport the viewer to another world. In short, we live up to our reputation as a cultural destination unique on the West Coast.
In addition to the fine art houses, a number of specialty stores carry unusual furniture, artifacts and carpets. While not strictly speaking galleries, these merchants, scour the globe to find unique items made by traditional craftspeople and artisans. They bridge the gap between gallery and furniture store, providing a depth and richness to shopping for the home that is truly unique in Vancouver. www.southgranville.info

At the heart of the Francophone community, we welcome children from 30 months old to school age, Monday to Friday. The kids learn in French, alternating guided and free times during which they learn by themselves playing, handling and experimenting. We aim at the overall and balanced development of each child and we focus especially on three learning trends: arts, close environment and ecology. As an annex of Cousteau, The French International School of Vancouver (located in North Vancouver from 1997), La Calypso offers a superior academic experience by uniting the best of France and Canada. Our teachers are native French speakers and certified by France and British Columbia. At the turn of the twentieth century, a new global perspective on cuisine began to dawn. Chefs paused in their kitchens to reconsider the courses they were serving. Traditional attitudes about cooking and dining fell away. Eating became both the expression and the pursuit of pleasure.
At last, eating was no longer just a necessity or a status symbol, but a joy.
James Perse was born in Los Angeles, California in 1972. James’ childhood was split between the beach, the hockey rink and the floor of his father’s innovative Los Angeles boutique, Maxfield. With Maxfield at the forefront of putting Los Angeles on the fashion map, James received an incidental education on cutting edge fashion from Europe and Asia, on modern architecture, furniture design and on the elegant and the clean-line.
Ironically, sports led James to his first foray into fashion. Obsessed with baseball caps, he could never find one that was well designed - with quality construction, shape, fabric and coloring. In 1991, James set out to make the ideal cap for Maxfield and it was not long before customers became clients - film directors ordered hats for their cast and crew and record labels bought them for tours.

The Stanley Theatre
On December 15, 1930, The Stanley opened with a screening of Lillian Gish’s first talkie, One Romantic Night. This was the beginning of a love affair between the city and The Stanley. Original admission prices ranged from ten to forty cents, and included the feature, a comedy, a newsreel and a scenic. In addition to films, the early days of The Stanley featured live performances: local talent shows were put on, and Vancouver Little Theatre staged productions. During the Second World War, The Stanley theatre hosted fundraisers for the war effort. The Stanley Theatre is more than just a building. It is the heart and soul of our South Granville neigh bourhood. It draws people into our community and it creates a unique experience that cannot be found anywhere else in the city. It gives us roots and provides consistency as everything around us is changing.

A New Lifestyle Design Safeway Store
The opening of the Marpole Safeway marks the first phase of an incredible redevelopment for this vibrant community. Incorporated into the storefront design was the need to acknowledge the visual history of the original Safeway store with the arched glulam beams once synonymous with Safeway across the Lower Mainland. Safeway has incorporated these glulam beams once again over the entrances.
This neighbourhood is easy to reach by way of the 100 Marine Drive bus service from Marine Station Canada Line (5min.). Or come down Granville on the 14 Granville from anywhere North (South Granville, 41st, 49th). Two businesses of note are Ragnar Jewellers and Red Star Seafood Restaurant Mr. Moustache is good too! Chiro and Physio as well.
Marpole
Introducing Safeway’s New Lifestyle Design
The design of the new Marpole Safeway reflects the evolving needs of the busy Metro Vancouver grocery shopper who is seeking easy meal solutions, healthy alternatives and items that address a wide range of dietary concerns. The new Marpole Safeway carries premium brands, locally grown fresh produce, a range of organic options and authentic Asian products in every department and every aisle. Consumers can easily identify locally grown, harvested and processed foods by looking for the Buy BC Food shelf tags. There are premium, locally grown and Canadian products in every department. Expanded offerings for those seeking gluten free, diabetic, organics, environmental, all natural products or products for those that have health specific needs.
Originally called the Vancouver & Lulu Island Railway, the Arbutus Corridor runs between False Creek and Marpole and was the route of the Vancouver-Steveston interurban line, run by the BC Electric company. Established in 1905, the interurban spurred settlement on the west side of the city and led to the creation of village centres like Kerrisdale. The interurban trains throughout the Lower Mainland ceased operation in 1958, but short freight trains continued to use the tracks for almost 50 years.

Magee Secondary School Music
ABOVE: Baltic Tour Farewell Concert, February 2019
TALES FROM THE HOOD
The Magee Secondary School Music Department is one of those amazing public school music programs that everyone should be aware of in Metro Vancouver. Besides giving regular concerts throughout the year it’s direcors find time to take their ensembles on at least one tour each year. This year it was to to Finland, Latvia and Estonia.
The Magee Music program really found its footing under the direction of Peter Stigings. He built the program into a powerhouse along with choral director John Trepp. They were and still are an award winning program. Today the program directors are Greg Quan, choral and orchestra and Keith Ollerenshaw; bands.
In 2018, the program was off and running with a Music Department Welcome Night. In October they were on retreats both locally and to Whistler. November was time for their first major concert of the year, their annual Fall Concert at the Pacific Spirit United Church (former Ryerson) where cocert goers heard performances by the Concert Choir, Symphonic Band, Evolution Choir, String Orchestra, Symphony Orchestra, Wind Ensemble, and the Chamber Choir.
There is a lot of interaction between the various school programs around Metro Vancouver. Often groups from other secondary schools come by to perform and the host school returns the favour at some point.
December is always Christmas month and the focus of a big concert at Shaughnessy Heights Untied Church. To find out about what the Magee music ensembles are up to please go to their site at www.mageemusic.ca.
Between 16th Avenue and 9th Avenue
Located on Arbutus Street between 16th Avenue and Broadway, this shopping Centre caters to residents nearby and along the Arbutus corridor. At 16th Avenue where the Ridge Theatre used to be located is a brand new, very large Loblaw’s Market.
Heading north towards Broadway just before 12th Avenue there is a Bullock’s Optical store. More than just an optical store they have a registered optician as well. Right next door is a wonderful local butcher shop just like you used to find in the neighbourhoods.
Between 12th and Broadway new stores I recently discovered are Blythe Toning Studio and Rush Salon. I also noticed a wonderful flower shop. But the one that really stood out as I walked by was called Sweet Barrel Creamery. The aromas were to die for.

Six years in the making and always aiming to serve the community, Sweet Barrel is a locally owned, Vancouver based cafe. Our on site roasting, brewing and ice cream churning makes us an interesting triple threat and we hope you come to check us out!
House roasted coffee beans
Call it the new fad, or just us the “3rd wave” being too fussy. We do not roast our coffee too dark into the second crack. That way one can still enjoy the true accents of the coffee according to their origins.
Edible Arrangements® 1364 in Vancouver, British Columbia first opened in April 2012. Ever since, we’ve been helping people in our local community celebrate all kinds of occasions – big and small. Our fruit arrangements and gifts are always freshly-crafted using fruit that’s grown and picked to our Fruit Expert® standards. And, we have the best variety of gourmet chocolate Dipped Fruit™, too! My Greek Barber’s Diary
by Christopher Best
The heartwarming true story of how one man influenced so many over the course of his lifetime.
Born in a small village in Militsa, Greece in 1935, George Chronopoulos lived through the Nazi occupation of Greece in World War II and the Greek Civil War of 1944 - 1949. In the early days his village had no electricity yet his family lived like kings on their farm.
His father decided that he would become a barber in Pilos, where he had moved as a young boy to be by the sea for health
reasons. It wasn’t long before he moved to Kalamata and then to Athens where he eventually joined the army. Because he was a barber he was in great demand in the army and got to know Generals and others in high command. After the army everyone was leaving Greece, so his father said, “If you want to go, I do not mind,” and he too emigrated, to Montreal.
In Montreal he married a girl from back home, Voula. He learned how to do the latest in styles and razor cuts from the guys in Montreal, Perry Como Style, Hollywood Style and in 1960 they moved to Vancouver.
His first job in Vancouver was at the Hotel Vancouver Barber Shop for three days. Next, he moved to a small shop at 41st & Oak. “I’ve got the best barber in town,” bragged the owner. It wasn’t long before Gus Lloyd spotted him and hired him for his Waverly Barber Shop on Georgia Street. Jack Wasserman wrote about him, “There is a new guy in town who does styles for men. Men’s hairdos.” Lots of business types came into the Waverly and the lifestyle was contagious. Seeing himself as an entrepreneur, he went into partnership with Gus, they bought a building on Richards Street and opened the Bouzouki Greek Coffee Shop.
He opened his own hair salon, the Riviera on Seymour, in 1964. It wasn’t long before he was established in Vancouver. “There was no one doing
what I was doing!” He had the establishment coming to him, the Jewish Community Syd Belzberg, Leon Kahn, Irving Kates, Sid Golden, Max Fugman, Roy Cantor, Joe Segal, members of the Richmond Golf & Country Club, every CEO in town including Jimmy Pattsion and Peter Bentley all came to him through word of mouth.
In the seventies he opened a second location in the basement of the Hyatt Hotel called The Royal Riviera. He continued buying other businesses, mainly restaurants at first and later condos. He started his own painting and renovation companies. His real estate and business dealings took him first to the US and then to Britain, Switzerland, Bucharest and India.
He and Voula raised three daughters over the years and was instrumental in raising money for the Greek community through his connections and for many other charities in Vancouver and across Canada. Church and family were always foremost in his life! www.metro-guides.ca/books

It Ain’t Over Until Faye Leung the Hat Lady Sings
The Faye and Dean Leung Story!
How they changed the faces of Canada
Dean and Faye Leung were pioneers in blending Chinese society with the Caucasian society in Vancouver during the 1950s, 1960s, 1970s and 1980s. They both fought the decades old discrimination in Canada against the Chinese and other minorities.
Together, they accomplished many things in the fields of banking, housing, education and probably most importantly in the field of immigtration category reform. If you are from an immigrant family who came to Canada after 1967, chances are you are here because of Faye Leung. It can probably be said that Canada is multicultural today because of the efforts of Faye Leung.
Faye was also a pioneer in establishing economic ties between Canada and China starting back in 1980, through to today, when China began to open its doors after
the Cultural Revolution. She was the first Canadian businesswoman to be invited to China by Deng Xiaoping’s government.
The last chapter in her biography is an overview of the Fantasy Gardens boondoggle which saw the first premier in Commonwealth history forced to resign due to his own arrogance. Faye is beaten up and smeared by the premier’s lawyers, then the media and made the scapegoat to keep the premier out of jail. A more in-depth look at this entire affair can be read inside this book.
