Long before the arrival of European settlers in the Vancouver area in 1791, Squamish ancestors had a village at Sen̓áḵw. Every year, families from upper Squamish villages would travel down to Sen̓áḵw, where the lands and waters were ideal for fishing, hunting, and harvesting traditional resources. There was an abundance of elk, beaver, deer, salmon, duck, cedar, and more. The Squamish people built longhouses and brought neighbouring tribes together for potlatches. Sen̓áḵw was an important hub for trade, commerce, social relationships, and cultural practices.

Welcome to the neighbourhoods of Vancouver. This guide is a business diirectory to the neighbourhoods of Vancouver’s westside. It is for both locals and visitors alike and new Vancouverites just love it. Vancouver’s westside officially extends from Ontario Street in the east, from Marine Drive in the south to Kits Beach in the north and west to and including UBC. The Canada Line skytrain runs below Cambie Street from YVR to downtown. There is talk about building one to UBC. There are two new community centres located on the westside, Hillcrest and Creekside Community Recreation Centres.

I believe visibility is important. If you do not know about something how can you support it. The youth band movement started in Vancouver in 1933. By the 1960s wonderful music programs were established in our high schools. They still thrive today and we want to tell you about them. Music in the Hood is the tagline. One of the nicest aspects about Vancouver is its old heritage schools located on picturesque tree lined boulevards. Built in the early 20th c, they remain a constant reminder of our early heritage.

This guide is more though than a business directory. We include heritage and stories from the ‘hood’ and people. Take it with you and visit the different neighbourhoods throughout the year. Tourists love it too!

So get out and explore your neighbourhoods. Christopher Best

The Cake and the Giraffe

When I was 13 years old, I hit six foot one inch tall. I was finished growing by then and towered above all my friends until the end of high school when most of them caught up.

So, naturally I was given all sorts of nicknames and compared to all sorts of tall lanky animals. Giraffes seemed to stand out for me and the fascination began. To date I have too many stuffed animal giraffes for a girl in her twenties, in addition to multiple sets of animal cookie cutters with a giraffe in each, and at least ten little figurines.

However, unlike giraffes, my neck is an average human length and I don’t have spots.

Like giraffes, I love to be social and if you’re ever lost in a crowd, I’m easy to spot!

Patisserie Lebeau was founded by Olivier and Penny Lebeau in 1995. Born and raised in Belgium, Olivier Lebeau went through 3 years of rigorous apprenticeship training as a professional Pastry chef, and Penny graduated from the California Culinary Academy.

If you’ve ever stopped by our Kitsilano bakery (our first store) on a Sunday, you’ve seen the line-ups spilling onto west 1st avenue. The Brussels waffle, the centerpiece of our weekend menu, has been such a hit since we first opened our doors on Cypress Street back in 1995.

My Greek Barber’s Diary

The heartwarming true story of how one man influenced so many over the course of his lifetime.

Born in a small village in Militsa, Greece in 1935, George Chronopoulos lived through the Nazi occupation of Greece in World War II and the Greek Civil War of 1944 - 1949. In the early days his village had no electricity yet his family lived like kings on their farm.

His father decided that he would become a barber in Pilos, where he had moved as a young boy to be by the sea for health

reasons. It wasn’t long before he moved to Kalamata and then to Athens where he eventually joined the army. Because he was a barber he was in great demand in the army and got to know Generals and others in high command. After the army everyone was leaving Greece, so his father said, “If you want to go, I do not mind,” and he too emigrated, to Montreal.

In Montreal he married a girl from back home, Voula. He learned how to do the latest in styles and razor cuts from the guys in Montreal, Perry Como Style, Hollywood Style and in 1960 they moved to Vancouver.

His first job in Vancouver was at the Hotel Vancouver Barber Shop for three days. Next, he moved to a small shop at 41st & Oak. “I’ve got the best barber in town,” bragged the owner. It wasn’t long before Gus Lloyd spotted him and hired him for his Waverly Barber Shop on Georgia Street. Jack Wasserman wrote about him, “There is a new guy in town who does styles for men. Men’s hairdos.” Lots of business types came into the Waverly and the lifestyle was contagious. Seeing himself as an entrepreneur, he went into partnership with Gus, they bought a building on Richards Street and opened the Bouzouki Greek Coffee Shop.

He opened his own hair salon, the Riviera on Seymour, in 1964. It wasn’t long before he was established in Vancouver. (continued see p 88)

The Gallery is the first in the world to exhibit crystals, minerals and fossils of museum size and quality in a space specifically designed to showcase their unique sculptural beauty. Large scale pieces are on display for designers, artists, decorators, collectors and individuals wishing to view, experience and purchase these rare objects of art from the mineral world.

With the new space (at 1760 West 3rd) it was our goal to create a modern, tranquil and healthy “green” environment in which to explore the beauty and creativity of our Earth.

We work closely with local and international jewellers, gem carvers and designers, providing them with select gemstones and crystals.

Yorkville

Finding inspiration in clean architectural lines and nature’s interplay of textures and colours. Mary Ann integrates these elements into her pieces by combining juxtaposing materials like brilliant cut diamonds with rough Aquamarine. Another aspect of her designs is her desire to work with gemstones that aren’t commonly known, such as Spinel or Chrysophrase.

Andrew Costen

Andrew discovered his calling for jewellery design at an early age, and at the age of 16 he began training to become a world class goldsmith. Having won numerous National and International award competitions, including the 2013 International Spectrum Awards, it seems that this dedication has paid off. Known for his unusual combinations of gemstones and metals, Andrew’s pieces range from simply classic to lavishly ornate.

On the way down Arbutus to the beach be sure to stop off at Delamont Park at 7th and Arbutus. It is dedicated to Arthur Delamont who founded the world famous Kitsilano Boys’ Band. A little further towards Kits Beach and you arrive at Arbutus Coffee House in a building that was there during the 1960s Hippie days.

On the corner of fourth and Arbutus is Method Indoor Cycling. Watch the traffic go by perched on a stationary bike on their second floor.

BOOK * BIOGRAPHY

An Insider’s Story of the Rise & Fall of Canadian Airlines

The demise of Canada’s other national air carrier, Canadian Airlines International in 1999 was heart wrenching to employees, unions, management and to the citizens of Canada.

Confusion and stories abound as to what actually happened. This book sets the record straight as the man behind the employee rescue plan to save the airline decides to tell his story. Sid Fattedad emigrated to Vancouver from Hong Kong in 1968 to play drums in a rock and roll band, the Five Man Cargo. Having worked as an articling student in Hong Kong, the lustre of the music industry soon wore off and he found

working as a junior accounting clerk for Canadian Pacific Airlines.

It wasn’t long before Canadian Pacific became CP Air, the planes were painted orange and Sid became senior clerk of corporate accounting.

The rising cost of oil in the 1970s, labour unrest and the acquisition of new planes made running an airline hard on the bottom line and the accounting department was always in the forefront. It was work all week, socialize at the pubs on the weekend with a tightly knit group called the ‘boat crew,’ who would often travel to England commandeering river boats on the canals of the Norfolk Broads, visiting pubs along the way. Sid became known as Kato.

After receiving his CGA Sid was promoted to Travelling Auditor where he learned first hand CP Air’s overseas operations. The ‘night of the long knives, the Kremlin and ‘The General,’ all play into the story as the 1980s saw a sea of change at CP Air… Colussy fails to purchase Wardair and Sid is named to the board of TransPacific Tours Limited a little known but highly profitable subsidiary company. Don Carty purchases Nordair and Sid becomes Comptroller of CP Air.

A backwards take-over. Carty attempts to purchase PWA but is thwarted by the FASB and PWA purchases CP Air. Read the rest of the synopsis on our website: www.warfleetpress.com

The aim of the Kitsilano Showboat Society is to do something as a community project, to bring enjoyment to residents and tourists, and to encourage amateur talent. It is the only project of its kind, to our knowledge, that is operated on a volunteer basis and at no cost to the taxpayer.

1935 was an ideal time to begin such a program. Showboat’s founder, the late Bert Emery, passed away in 1977, and shortly thereafter the last of the founding members died. Entertainers, unable to get jobs, were willing to display their talents whenever they could, whereas people eager for entertainment, but unable to pay for it, provided an appreciative audience.

In 1936, Vancouver’s Golden Jubilee year, our first stage was built by the Jubilee Committee. No dressing rooms were permitted and it had to be torn down at the end of the sea son, and sold for $25. Temporary seats which were built on the top of the bank also had to be torn down.

Featured in the celebrations were swimmers, divers (from an 80-foot tower), dancers and singers from Hawaii, and the RCMP Musical ride.

In 1937, the Park Board granted permission for a new stage to be built; this was accomplished by a group of volunteer workers. Only a flat deck was allowed, again no dressing rooms, so a waterproof piano box was used instead for many years.

The first permanent stage, built in 1948, was just a cement slab. The plywood dressing rooms had to be erected at the

beginning of every season and removed each fall. This stage represented a flower garden with potted shrubs and hanging flower baskets, which were on loan to us by the Vancouver Parks Board.

In 1954 it was converted to represent a Mississippi Riverboat and that theme has been used ever since. Permanent dressing rooms were built as well as bleachers.

In 1978, Kitsilano Pool, the largest outdoor tidal pool (in front of which the Showboat is situated), underwent major renovations to build a large outdoor heated pool. Due to construction of the pool we were unable to use the Showboat stage and, for that summer, we presented programs on the beach.

1982-83 saw major renovations to the Showboat. We added large dressing rooms, washroom facilities, and had a backdrop facelift retaining the riverboat theme. Showboat, which was incorporated as a Society in 1987, would not exist today without the tireless efforts of Captain Bea Leinbach who spent many hours reading the blueprints and convincing the Vancouver Parks Board that the stage should remain on the edge of the Kitsilano Pool. We still operate three summer months with a concert every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday, weather permitting, as well as band concerts scheduled for various Sundays. For special occasions, such as the International Symphony of Fire, we arrange extra shows to coincide with their program. We stage 50 to 60 different shows per season. This means that 3,000 to 4,000 entertainers volunteer their service and an estimated 1/2 million residents of Vancouver and visitors from all over the world attend the concerts.

The Naam Restaurant

The Naam is a very busy vegetarian full-service restaurant located in the heart of Vancouver’s Kitsilano district. It is the city’s oldest natural foods restaurant, with over 30 years of cooking tradition. The Naam is open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. We close only on Christmas day.

The Naam is “funky”--wooden tables, an old wooden floor, and casual decor. In the winter we burn through about six cords of wood in our fireplace. In the summer we have a beautiful enclosed (or open as weather permits) garden patio--an extremely popular place on warm balmy evenings. We have live music every night from 7-10 pm - mostly blues, folk and jazz.

We take reservations for parties over 6 people during the week with 48 hours advance notice. We DO NOT accept reservations on Friday evenings and weekends. A 15% pre-authorized gratuity is required, and tables are held only 15 minutes. There is only one Naam. Years ago we had to decide whether to get bigger- or better. We decided to just get better. We look forward to seeing you.

Kidsbooks We love to host author events for kids and adults alike. We have seen the magic that happens when children have the opportunity to hear authors such as Kenneth Oppel or Gail Carson Levine speak about their writing. Hello, I am Kanako.

I grew up in Japan in a traditional Japanese family. My father is a carpenter. He designs and builds traditional Japanese homes. My mother is a professional hairdresser.

Growing up with two artists, creating by hand is in my nature.

Before I became a hairdresser, I worked as an esthetician in Japan. One day, I was applying makeup for a client. She was beautifully dressed, and her makeup was perfect, but something was missing. Her hair didn’t look good! At that moment, I knew I wanted to study hairdressing. Now I am happy to have my own hair salon in Vancouver.

Tandoori Fusion

A review from Yelp.

I ended up in this end of town for n appointment, and as hungry guides me to make a quick decision, we popped in here as the lunch special looked good. When we arrived it was quiet and almost empty, but by the tune we left it was full.

The reason, the food was great. Really good. The tray had numerous items. For me, basmati rice, daal, vegetable curry a samosa, a dessert,a small salad and fresh naan. Great value. For my hubby the same but with butter chicken instead of vegetable curry.

Everything was fresh and delicious. Service was good and efficient. Not over the top friendly, but efficient. We definitely would go back.

Great value and food.

Kitsilano Secondary School

HISTORY: Kitsilano Secondary School, named after Chief August Jack Khahtsahlano (a Musqueam First Nations leader) was founded in 1917, when overflow classes from King Edward High School were moved to Cecil Rhodes School; however, the first temporary wooden structures built in 1920, at Trafalgar and 12th Avenue, marked the true beginning of Kitsilano High School. The building we now call home opened its doors in 1927.

The very first youth band in Vancouver was at Kitsilano in 1930 when Arthur Delamont moved his boys over from General Gordon Elementary School. It was short lived when he moved them back to GG in 1932.

During the 1960s Kitsilano had one of the two strongest music programs in Vancouver under George Wardlaw. In the 1970s Dave Berger came on board and ran a great program for many years until he retired. Then Kim Holland was a director. Today 2023 Kits High School has a thriving music department that can be found at www.kssmusic.wixsite.com

Located at 2550 West 10th Avenue.

Our wines are from all around the world (and all around the province) but our heritage is pure Kitsilano—family-owned and community-minded. We were one of the first private wine stores in B.C. when we started with a limited inventory in a modest space back in 1986, and we’re proud to say we’ve grown up in the neighborhood.

At the Broadway International Wine Shop, you’ll find something for everyone and every budget. You’ll find exotic ty wines. You’ll find innovative releases from boutique producers. You’ll find the right-priced bottle for that backyard barbeque. You’ll find new discoveries at our weekend tastings. One thing you won’t find, though, is an attitude. Because to us, good wine is not about snobbery—it’s about sharing a passion for all the good things in life that are worth raising a glass to.

Estd 1986. Local, family owned wine shop. We carry domestic & international wines, bubbly, cider and sake.

Vancouver Phoenix Gymnastics is a not-for-profit society, founded by Sev Hieberg in 1969. Sev was a man of high ideals and great personal generosity. He built the Club on traditions and values of generosity, sportsmanship, work ethic, honour and love of gymnastics. Read about our Mission, Vision and Values. We continue to embody these characteristics in our day-to-day work, and by following our Phoenix Values. This has graduates of the Phoenix program to continue in the sport of gymnastics into High School and beyond. Today, they remain with us as coaches, judges, administrators, volunteers, and positive members of our community. They often return with their children — the next generation of the Phoenix family.

The Club was also built on the spirit of volunteerism by our families. Events such as family day, fundraising activities, parent education nights, competition hosting, year-end celebrations and cleanups are some of the many ways the Phoenix family has come together.

Parthenon Supermarket is the best small market on West Broadway, and quite possibly Vancouver. If you’re looking for any fine cheeses, deli meats or olives, I seriously doubt if you could find better value. I remember when I first moved to Vancouver five years ago I bought some medium gouda cheese at Capers for something like $35/kg, and later stumbled upon Parthenon which was selling aged gouda for around $22/kg, and really, my mind still marvels at the markup I paid for a lesser cheese from Capers. I don’t know the price difference now but I do know that the aged gouda at Parthenon is still under $30/kg, and undoubtedly still a better value.

A Greek market which also offers quick bites at its deli counter. Some of the best deals in town on olive oil, feta cheese, figs, deli meats, and pita. Perfect for a quick stop prior to a picnic to get all the supplies. They carry Beyond Fair Trade Certified, co-operative operated sustainably farmed, shade grown, organic and or local products as much as possible.

On The Way To UBC

This nice little shopping corner is located at 10th and Alma on the way to UBC. There was a a great shop selling first nation’s paintings but if you call them they may be at home. A Celtic Traditons store and a store selling wonderful Canadian Folkart is now a music store. Great, the world needs more music stores. IMO.

There is a Brown’s Restaurant in the mall and a pet food store. Over a block on Broadway, several new businesses are coming below some newly built condos. Another little mall is located on the corner of 9th and Alma. If you like gooey cinnamon buns, then the 99 Bline to UBC stops right in front Grounds For Coffee selling them as well. Come check it all out!

Celtic Traditions (formerly Celtic Woollens now Open Door Music School ) was started in 2000 by Michael Pratt and Lynn McGown who brought their passion for music and the philisophy of creating a space for a small cottage industry, fair trade goods retail store and music together.

Michael is an outstanding singer, concertina player and fiddler who draws from his Irish roots as well as his involvement in the Folk Clubs in the British Folk Revival in the late 1960s and 70s before moving to Canada. Lynn’s musical roots come from growing up in a French Canadian and English family in Montreal. She has a beautiful voice and sings with warmth and presence that inspires.

Their songs range from traditional to contemporary but always touch the heart, entertain or delight, with their voices blending like fine wine making the harmonies beautiful.

Folkart Interiors provides a professional, inviting and accommodating environment to display, purchase and sell high-quality, affordable collector and decorator-oriented antiques and reproductions and vintage items. The Folkart Gallery provides professional, proactive customer support to the dealers associated with it and to its customer. A major goal of the Folkart Gallery is to ensure that all its customers have a wonderful experience when shopping for their antiques and reproductions in our gallery. we hope to see

Greenery

Native Art Gallery Vancouver BC Canada. Featuring the First Nations Ojibway Art of Mark Anthony Jacobson and Jim Oskineegish in the contemporary Woodland style. Located on W10th Avenue just west of Alma Street near UBC, Greenery Gallery is also home to Greenery Florist where art is surrounded by the natural beauty of Fresh Cut Flowers and one of the finest collections of Phaleonopsis Orchids in Vancouver.

Mark Anthony Jacobson started painting at 13 years of age. Drawing traditional symbolism within the subject matter of his paintings, Mark began to realize that there was an energy of x-ray design materializing in his work. Mark explained that this visual language was like seeing the life force of creation, the spiritual energy of the animals, the birds, the fish and humanity.

Jim Oskineegish is a Shaman Ojibwe artist from the Eabametoong First Nation (also know as Fort Hope) - a re-

mote First Nation located in Northwest Ontario. He currently resides within the traditional Mohawk Territory of Akwesasne.

During his childhood, Jim gravitated towards art as a means of expressing his thoughts and ideas. Jim also discovered that art was a medium through which he could convey his stories and the promotion of Anishinabek culture of the world. (The store is closed but the last time I checked you could telephone the number and still see their native art collection.)

Having been around since 1929, University Golf Club is a traditional golf course with long, narrow fairways and towering old growth trees. It is only minutes away from the city but it feels like you’re in the country and away from it all. The golf course is accessible to all levels of players and can be walked or driven at your leisure. With 9 minute tee time intervals, there is no rush for you to enjoy this scenic course. Now for some history…

In 1929, John Boyd obtained a 40 year government lease on 120 acres of University Endowment Lands and opened the public course named the Westward Ho! Golf Course. In 1960, Boyd handed over the lease to his oldest daughter, Lillian Baldwin, who held it until it expired in 1970. The province then operated the course from 1970-1985.

In 1985, a group of Vancouver businessmen headed by Robin Lecky and late Shaughnessy Professional Jack McLaughlin were awarded a 25 year lease on the land. Members of this group included sports commentator and promoter Greg Douglas and his partner Ron Gardner, UBC Director of Athletics, Bob Hindmarch, former Shaughnessy G&CC manager Bill Gillespie, engineer and developer Ivan Kraemer and chartered accountant Bill Humphries. The lease has since been controlled by David Ho.

Lord Byng Secondary School

Lord Byng Secondary School is considered the only Fine Arts School in Metro Vancouver. The band program today is run by Scott Maclennan. The biggest program Scott has had has been: one beginning band, two junior bands, two intermediate bands, a senior wind ensemble, three jazz bands and two symphony orchestras. His two colleagues: Odette Kurth and Lisa Lan Ledingham have a string program and a choral program respectively.

The music program at Lord Byng goes back to the early 1960s with Jim Kirk followed by Pete Stigings. Dave Berger was there in the 1970s then followed by Scott MacLennan.

Under conductor and teacher Odette Kurth, Lord Byng’s string ensembles have won over twenty-five Kiwanis Festival Gold Awards (Provincial Competition) and three Gold Awards from the National Competition MusicFest. In 2008, the Senior Honor Orchestra won the trophy for first place in the North West Orchestra Competition in Portland, Oregon, and in 2010, both Junior and Senior Honor Orchestras received gold standing in the Heritage Music Festival in Seattle, Washington. The Senior Honor Orchestra were invited to compete in the 2012 American

String Teachers Association National Orchestra Festival in Atlanta, where they placed second against advanced American school orchestras. She took them to New York in 2013 and won the distinction of being the top string orchestra in North America. In 2012 they took second place in that same contest.

Scott’s first big trip with the Lord Byng band was in 1998-99. They went to California because that is where Jon Stromquest took his bands. Jon was Scott’s band director in Powell River. He always went to Disneyland. He figured if it was good enough for Jon it was good enough for him. They went for five days. In 2000-01 they went to Hawaii for a week. In 2003 it was Austria and Germany for ten days. They were down around the Munich area of Germany. In 2005 they went to New York for the first time. Scott took their symphony orchestra with them.

In 2004 Scott started their first symphony orchestra. He taught it on his own up to 2010. Then Odette took it over. In (2015) he was doing it by himself again. Before that they each conducted a couple of concerts a year. In 2007 they went to Italy. They had the experience of a lifetime playing in Vivaldi’s church in Venice. It was also a highlight of Scott’s career. That trip was for ten days as well. In 2009 it was off to the UK, England, Wales and Scotland. They gave eight performances in ten days (Covent Garden to the Millenium Centre in Cardiff). They also went to Edinburgh castle. In 2011 they were off to China, Beijing and Shanghai again for ten days. In 2013 it was back to Europe and Vimy Ridge, Belgium and France. Lord Byng played a major role at Vimy. That was the first trip the choir came along on. They now try to combine the choir and band trips so those students who are in both do not have to pick one or the other. And 2015 it was Carnagie Hall. An amazing program!

WineMaster CRAFT WINEMAK-

ING How long does it take to make a wine?

Depending on the wine you choose, it will take approximately 8 weeks to complete the winemaking process.

Can I make wine that is as good as store bought brands?

Yes! WineMaster sources juices and concentrates from all over the world and follows the same process as a winery, but on a much smaller scale. For the best wine, allow your wine to age in the bottle – the longer you wait the better it will become.

Is it expensive?

Not at all. We offer a wine for every budget. Because you are making the wine yourself, you save the high tax rates associated with beverage alcohol. In fact, our wines can be made for as little as $5 per bottle, making it very affordable compared to store-bought wine.

How do I make my own wine?

First, you need to decide if you will make the wine yourself at home, or at WimeMaster. If you live outside of the greater Vancouver area, or if you’d like to have a more hands-on experience, you can make the wine at home. If you are making it at our store– We can recommend a great style based on what you already like to drink. We will prepare your juice and you’ll sprinkle the yeast. Visit our store for more.

BOOKS * BIOGRAPHY

The Life & Times of the Legendary Mr. D

This sixth and final book on Arthur Delamont and his Vancouver Boys’ Band is also the first in a series on the History of the Youth Band Movement in Canada. The movement started here in Kitsilano in 1933 when the boy’s won the juvenile band championship of the world at the Chicago World’s Fair. All Vancouver became juvenile band crazy and bands sprouted up everywhere. Everyone wanted their sons/daughters to play in a band. Arthur started no less than seven himself in and around Vancouver. As he began taking trips with his band to

the Old Country (England), in 1934, the boys travelled by train across Canada stopping and playing along the way. Soon the places they visited all wanted youth bands of their own spurred on by the fine playing of his boys and their gentlemanly manner. Arthur’s boys went on to have bands of their own and teach in the schools. It wasn’t until the early 1960s that band became accredited in the public schools in B.C. due to the fine example and hard work of many dedicated music educators.

Jump ahead to 2014. Ministers and trustees are cutting the arts programs like never before. Band in the school curriculum is threatened, branded as a frill and easy pickings for ill-informed public officials who know nothing of the efforts it took to establish band in the curriculum in the first place.

This book (and subsequent books), set the record straight. They tell the story of how band got into the public school system. The next book in the series is titled: Greater Vancouver School Band Programs from the 1930s to the Present. It records/documents the fine band programs that have and still exist in the public schools today. These books will preserve forever the band legacy of not only Vancouver but eventually of Canada.

By the mid 40s, Mr. D had started no less than six school bands, from which he selected the best for his Kitsilano Band, they were the West Vancouver, North Vancouver, Grandview, Point Grey Junior High School and the General Gordon school bands. As more and more bands began to spring up in the school system, he eventually relinquished control of all but his Kitsilano Boys Band. Over the course of fifty years his band won 200 championships, made 14 European tours and attended 5 world fairs. The tours lasted from 2 to 5 months and three concerts a day were normal routine. While most bands would travel and perform only a handful of concerts on tour, his boys were hired out to perform engagements like professionals at seaside resorts through-out Britain, often booked well in advance for their next tour. His success story is filled with humor, excitement, tragedy and love. In 1914 he was a member of the Territorial Staff Band of the Salvation Army, on board the Empress of Ireland, which sank in the St. Lawrence, with a loss of over 1000. In 1939 he was in England with his boys when war was declared and had to sneak out under the cover of searchlights and balloons, zigzagging home down the coast of Africa and across the Atlantic, trying to avoid German U-boats.

His legacy is the thousands of boys who passed through his organization and the lessons they learned. Often their sons went on to play with him as well. And over the years they became the who’s who of the Canadian music establishment where his boys filled the first chairs in symphony orchestras. www.warfleetpress.com

It Ain’t Over Until Faye Leung the Hat Lady Sings

The Faye and Dean Leung Story!

How they changed the faces of Canada

Dean and Faye Leung were pioneers in blending the Chinese society with the Caucasian society in Vancouver during the 1950s, 1960s, 1970s and 1980s. They both fought the decades old discrimination in Canada against the Chinese and other minorities.

Together, they accomplished many things in the fields of banking, housing, education and probably most importantly in the field of immigtration category reform. If you are from an immigrant family who came to Canada after 1967, chances are you are here because of Faye Leung. It can probably be said that Canada is multicultural today because of the efforts of Faye Leung.

Faye was also a pioneer in establishing economic ties between Canada and China starting back in 1980, through to today, when China began to open its doors after

the Cultural Revolution. She was the first Canadian businesswoman to be invited to China by Deng Xiaoping’s government.

The last chapter in her biography is an overview of the Fantasy Gardens boondoggle which saw the first premier in Commonwealth history forced to resign due to his own corruption. Faye is beaten up and smeared by the premier ’s lawyers, then the media and made the scapegoat to keep the premier out of jail. A more in-depth look at this entire affair can be read in this book.

MOVIE:

The Ghosts of Chinatown

INVESTMENT: $1 Million INVESTORS NEEDED: 400

ABOUT: This is an opportunity for small investors to get involved for the first time in a Johnny Depp movie. Ten of Johnny Depp’s movies have either grossed over $1 Billion worldwide or grossed above $500 Million.

CONDITIONS: No money will exchange hands until a producer is on board (Ron Howard) the lead actors all signed (Johnny Depp, Meryl Streep and Sandra Oh) and a studio on board that has a distributor and can guarantee theatrical release (Disney).

RETURN: This budget covers Production $100 Million, Distribution $100 Million, Marketing $100 Million and Actor’s Residuals (cash amount the leads receive after production) $100 Million. Because we are raising the entire cost, this group will be first in line to receive compensation.

THE TRANSACTION: Once we have the investment needed, a Literary Agent in London, England will be engaged to handle all aspects of the transaction; getting a producer on board, the producer getting the actors on board and the studio. The producer will assemble his team, set a schedule and a budget and work will begin on a script.

SYNOPSIS: Faye Leung finds herself on Pender Street in front of the newly opened Chinatown Storytelling Centre. She sees visions of people she used to know going into the various businesses and they see her but say nothing. Unknowingly, she has stumbled into a parallel dimension called Ghost World. It is only for ghosts. The Office has sent down a good wizard (Meryl Streep) to rally the ghosts of Chinatown for an attack on City Hall to get the City to give Chinatown protected heritage status so it won’t disappear. The Mayor wants to sell off the buildings to developers. To read more go to our website: www.warfleetpress.com.
