HEARTBROKEN relatives of those missing on flight MH370 branded the Malaysian government ‘the real executioners’ after learning in a text message their loved-ones were dead. The families of the Chinese among the 239 passengers spoke out after receiving an SMS, written in English, saying that the flight was assumed to be lost and no one had survived. The text was sent half an hour before Malaysian prime minister Najib Razak announced that data analysis by British experts showed the doomed flight, which went

Sochi summit called off as Britain warns Russia to ‘change course’ over Ukraine
Putin loses out on the G8 by AiDAn RADnEDGE
THIS year’s G8 summit in Russia will be scrapped because of Moscow’s military action in Ukraine. British prime minister David Cameron confirmed the abandonment of the meeting and said it was ‘absolutely clear’ the meeting of world leaders in Sochi could not go ahead. The decision comes after Russian troops took control of the last military bases in Crimea. Preparations for the planned June summit had already been put on hold as pressure increased in Europe and the US to further isolate president Vladimir Putin, with the other major nations instead gathering in Brussels. Speaking in The Hague ahead of a meeting of G7 leaders, Mr Cameron said: ‘We should be clear there’s not going to be a summit this year in Russia. ‘We’ll be meeting tonight, the seven other countries of the G8 that are going to determine the way forward. But frankly, it

Last of Crimean bases falls to Russian forces is Russia that needs to change course.’ Meanwhile, Ukraine ordered its forces to retreat from Crimea as Russia tightened its grip of the peninsula. The latest military facility to fall was a naval base near the port of Feodosia, where two injured servicemen were taken captive yesterday and 80 were detained. Ukraine’s former navy chief Denis Berezovsky, who was charged with treason after he swore allegiance to Moscow, was named the deputy commander of Russia’s Black Sea Fleet. In Kiev, acting president Oleksandr Turchnynov said Ukrainian troops would be ordered to leave with their families in response to ‘threats from occupying Russian forces’. Russian prime minister Dmitry Medvedev promised more economic aid and said Crimeans would continue receiving pensions and subsidies even after the region switched to the rouble.

They are members of a military sports club – formed in the Soviet era – whose stated aim is to turn youngsters into fighters who could defend the ‘motherland’. Children join up from the age of five to go on marches and learn hand-tohand combat, before progressing to master shooting skills. They dream of growing up to serve under Vladimir Putin in elite army units – but organisers say the Berkut club in Zhukovsky also provides useful moral guidance.

ONE in ten parents think children have been harmed by someone else’s drinking, a damning study on alcohol abuse has revealed. The review on the impact of problem drinking found one tenth of mothers, fathers or guardians report that youngsters were exposed to verbal and physical abuse, witnessed serious violence in the home or were put in unsafe situations at least once in the previous 12 months. The Health Service Executive (HSE) study revealed that a quarter of Ireland’s population – about 1.1million people – have experienced some harm due to another person’s drinking. Some 28 per cent have experienced at least one negative consequence as a result of alcohol, including family problems, being a passenger with a drunk driver, assault, vandalism and money problems. Women are more likely to experience alcohol-related family problems – one in six – while men are more likely to report assaults – one in nine. In the workplace, Ireland has twice the rate of drink-related problems as Australia, with one in ten seeing problems with heavy-drinking co-workers. Alcohol Action Ireland, the national charity for alcohol-related issues, said the report was further evidence alcohol pricing, marketing and availability need to be regulated.

Concrete staircase collapsed under own weight at school A TWELVE-TONNE concrete staircase collapsed under its own weight at a newly-built Dublin secondary school, a court has heard. Galway-based firm Oran Pre-cast Ltd is facing a charge under the Safety, Health and Welfare at Work Act after a staircase they designed fell down at Phibblestown postprimary, Dublin 15, in October 2010. Mark Madigan, an inspector with the Health and Safety Authority (HSA), told Judge John O’Neill at Dublin District Court construction workers were finishing the school
when the 8m-long pre-cast concrete stairs fell, but nobody was injured. The fault was a result of problems with the ‘rebar metal’, the reinforcement running through the structure allowing it to withstand pressure, and also with the mixing of the concrete in the stairs. The precast concrete stairs was inspected by a technician and not a qualified engineer, the judge also heard. Yesterday, Judge O’Neill ruled the firm will face trial at Dublin Circuit Criminal Court. A book of evidence is due to be served on May 12.

A Long Way Down star TONI COLLETTE, 41, used to find acting scary – now making music is more likely to give the Australian butterflies
Was A Long Way Down, based on Nick Hornby’s novel about four suicidal strangers, tough? It was an absolute joy.
This is what you want: something to sink your teeth into, people who are likeminded, brilliant material and a most supportive director.
Was it hard to balance the story’s comic and dramatic elements? Nick Hornby is so
good at writing in that tone. It’s the type of movie I love to make because I think they go hand in hand. I get a bit bored if they don’t exist together. There were a few moments where we tried different ways so there would be options in the editing room... but, generally, it was very clear in the script.
Are you a Hornby fan? I love his writing. I did About A Boy, so I’ve been familiar with him for a while. I think he’s so relatable. He gets life in a very real way and the people feel whole. They’re messy and f***ed up and kind of great. Can you understand how someone such as your character, Maureen, could
reach a point where death is preferable to life? I’ve thought
about it a lot because of this movie. However, I can’t imagine getting to that point. I’m just too scared of death and the older I get, the more I realise it’s really normal to have sadness in your life. Depression is something else, it’s an illness. What everyone wants is happiness, right? But you’re not going to feel happiness unless you feel everything. And happiness is just one of the emotions and it’s just as fleeting as everything else. It just keeps changing. So as long as you know that, I think it’s quite comforting. If you have a sad moment, you know it’s going to shift because nothing lasts forever.
You’ve played a lot of women with real problems. Are those parts hard to find?
I feel really lucky. When Muriel’s Wedding came out I spent some time in LA and I was being offered characters that were similar to Muriel, and even though I wanted to work, there was something in me that knew not to do that. Because once you start doing it, they will keep you there. The great thing
about being an actor is you get to explore so many different people and how they live. So I feel quite satisfied in what I am doing.
In general is there a dearth of complex roles for women? There is a great imbalance. I think it comes down to where the financing comes from and what those men want to see on screen. I could go on a big feminist rant but I think what I am going to do instead is just start producing my own stuff and that’s the only way I can chip away and fight against it.
Did you know early on that you wanted to act? I always
loved acting. It makes me feel alive. People think actors just get up and do it but most actors feel vulnerable doing it. So, initially, although I had an absolute compulsion to do it, there’s also a real vulnerability to it. But it’s good to feel scared. And then when you move beyond it, it’s like climbing a mountain. It’s like, yeah!
You have written and performed music. Do you get something similar from that?
I can’t imagine life without music. I think of all forms of expression,
THIS is one major incident that definitely needs de-escalating. Miraculously no-one was killed when this runaway commuter train barrelled across a platform and ploughed its way up a flight of moving stairs. It happened at one of America’s busiest airports and hurt 32 people on board yesterday morning. No-one suffered life-threatening injuries in the Blue Line derailment at O’Hare International Airport in Chicago. Fortunately, it happened at 2.50am when the platform was deserted. The station is packed during peak time with travellers making their way to or from the city. Denise Adams, a passenger in one of the eight cars, said: ‘I heard a boom and when I got off the train, it was all the way up the escalator. There was a lot of panic.’ Hours after the crash, the front of the first car could still be seen near the top of the escalator. ‘We will be looking at signals, at the human factor and any extenuating circumstances,’ said a Chicago Transit Authority investigator.
“
It’s really normal to have sadness in your life. Depression is something else, it’s an illness music, for me, is the most transporting. It just blows my mind. I’ve always written and I made one record. I loved the process. I loved touring. I loved collaborating in that way. And I loved being surprised by what people brought.
Does performing music feel more naked? It’s scary because
it’s like: ‘Hello, here’s my stomach. I’m just going to put it here and you can jump around on it.’ In a way it’s much more personal. As an actor you’re saying other people’s words. When you’re making music, it’s from you.
What do you want from another actor when you’re working together? You want
other actors who are open, so you can meet in the middle. Otherwise you’re just working with a brick wall and that’s f***ing boring.
So what do you do when you don’t have that connection? You take the money and run. No, you just make the most of it. You’re still there to do a job, so you do it. Stephen Applebaum

Siberian teens attack Paddy’s Day flashmob
YOU might think St Patrick’s Day and its ensuing celebrations are known all over the world, but perhaps not in some parts of Siberia. Deciding to hold a belated St Patrick’s Daythemed flashmob, students and teachers at a language school in Irkutsk were reportedly attacked by a gang who mistook them for gay activists.
According to a police spokesman, some youths ‘expressed displeasure at the proceedings’ when members of Easy School held the flashmob in a shopping mall in the city. ‘A conflict took place that grew into a fight on the square outside the mall,’ the spokesman said. ‘The Easy School members were wearing
historic costumes, particularly kilts, and their opponents mistook them for representatives of non-traditional sexual orientation,’ the source said, using a Russian phrase meaning gay. The school posted a video of the flashmob on the social networking site VKontakte showing many wearing checked kilts, and confirmed its students and teachers were hurt in the fight.

Equator Plane crashed in the southern Indian Ocean, 2,500km (1,550 miles) south-west of Perth
IT WAS just three days after the plane disappeared that telecoms company Inmarsat gave the first clues to its whereabouts. The British-based firm runs a fleet of 30 satellites, one of which picked up the final signals emitted by MH370 just hours after it vanished from radar. The changing frequency of the ‘pings’ let the company narrow down their location to a 5,000km corridor, stretching from Kazakhstan to the southern Indian ocean. But the satellite, built in the 1990s, did not have the technology to tell which direction the pings were heading in and it took two weeks to calculate that the plane must have been heading south. on Sunday, Inmarsat sent its findings to the UK Air Accident Investigation Branch, which spent a day going over the figures before passing them to Malaysian investigators oceanographer Dr Simon Boxall, from the University of Southampton, called it an ‘astounding’ achievement. Call to clean up air pollution More must be done to reduce air pollution, health officials have warned after a new report suggested that seven million people died as a result of air pollution in 2012. The World Health organisation (WHo) said air pollution is ‘the world’s largest single environmental health risk’ and suggests there is a link between air pollution and heart disease, respiratory problems and cancer. Many of the deaths in 2012 occurred in low and middle-income countries in south east Asia and the western Pacific region, where about 3.3m died as a result of indoor air pollution and 2.6m deaths were related to outdoor air pollution, WHo said.

THE missing Malaysia Airlines plane plunged into the southern Indian Ocean, the country’s prime minister said yesterday. MH370 was tracked by analysis of satellite data by London-based telecoms company Inmarsat and the Air Accidents Investigation Board, Najib Razak added. Mr Razak told a news conference in Kuala Lumpur: ‘This is a remote location, far from any possible landing sites. ‘It is, therefore, with deep sadness and regret that I must inform you that, according to this new data, flight MH370 ended in the southern Indian Ocean.’ Electronic ‘pings’ also detected by Inmarsat suggested it flew for six hours after the plane’s communications systems were switched off during the flight. Inmarsat’s vice president Chris McLaughlin said the discovery was made by testing earlier findings against known flights and ‘came to the conclusion that only the southern route was possible’. He added: ‘Unfortunately, this is a 1990s satellite over the Indian Ocean that is not GPS-equipped. All we

Mr McLaughlin added: ‘What we still can’t say is what happened at the end, when the plane ran out of fuel. We have no way of knowing if it dropped from the sky or glided.’ Crucial to learning more about the crash is finding the black box, which usually has a battery life of about 30 days and can work at depths of 6,100m. Four floating objects were spotted in the Indian Ocean 2,500km west of Perth, Australia, by the crew on an Australian plane. These included a grey or green circular object, an orange rectangle and two cylinder-shaped bits of debris. Australian prime minister Tony Abbott said they could be flotsam but ships were sent to investigate. The ocean depth can reach 7,000m in the search area.
Saving Napoleon sewn apart THE emperor’s old clothes rather than his new ones are causing a stink. Relatives of Napoleon Bonaparte are in a legal battle to prevent the night garments he wore shortly before he died from leaving France. The descendants of the emperor’s servant Achille Thomas Archambault fear the sweat-stained clothes will end up abroad – and have delayed their sale at auction.
Dominique de Villepin, France’s former prime minister, has joined their cause. ‘They wanted this heritage to stay in France,’ said Horia Dazi-Masmi, the lawyer representing the relatives. The sale included a nightshirt worn by Napoleon before he died in 1821. It was expected to sell for €45,000. Two sleeves from his final shirt were estimated to go for almost €11,000,
while a walking stick, a lock of the emperor’s hair and bandages were among other lots. Archambault brought the artefacts back from St Helena, off the west coast of Africa, where Napoleon spent his final days as a prisoner of the British army. The items will be kept in storage until a legal agreement is reached about what to do with them.

But when the cameras weren’t looking the pair were determined to enjoy their own private party and ran up a bar bill amounting to €2,500. ‘Chloe and Will were on the same table partying together. They were laughing and chatting to each other all night and seemed to really get on with each other,’ said a Guilty Pleasures spy.

‘They hit the dance floor together a few times.’ and with a billionaire dad and millions from hit pop tunes, 23-year-old Green and 39year-old Will weren’t too worried about the huge bar bill as their table was full of vodka bottles and shots. Others at the club insisted Will and Chloe seemed like ‘old friends’ despite their 16-year age gap, while a spokeswoman for Green insisted the pair ‘are not dating’. The outing comes after former made in Chelsea socialite Green called it quits with
Jennifer lopez’s 45-year-old former hubby marc anthonyy last month. The pair ended their relationship, which had a 23-year-old age gap, shortly after a flashy red carpet show of love just a few weeks earlier at the Grammys. Single Will was last linked to Celebrity Big Brother glamour model Casey Batchelor, before she got bogged down in a bitter love triangle inside the house with Blue singer lee Ryan.

MORE than 100 people are still missing after a giant mudslide swept away homes in a square mile of devastation over the weekend. Overnight searches have found no additional survivors or fatalities. ‘The situation is very grim,’ district fire chief Travis Hots said. ‘We have not found anyone alive on this pile since Saturday.’ But emergency teams management director John Pennington said
the 108 people reported missing did not mean there are that many fatalities. ‘It’s a soft 108,’ he said. Authorities called the number ‘fluid’. Several people were injured and about 30 homes were destroyed when the slide hit the area north east of Seattle. A man and a six-month-old baby were said to be in a critical condition in hospital. Fury at death sentence for 529 Morsi accused EGYPT has caused international outrage after sentencing 529 supporters of ousted president Mohammed Morsi to death in a mass two-day trial. As another 682 members of the ‘outlawed’ Muslim Brotherhood were due to stand trial today, the United States said it was shocked by sentences, but said it was still talking to the Egyptian government. ‘We’re certainly raising it with the Egyptian government ... it’s a pretty shocking number,’ State department spokeswoman Marie Harf said. ‘It defies logic that over 529 defendants could be tried in a twoday period in accordance with international standards,’ she said.
The accused were convicted of charges including murdering a policeman and attacks on people and property after violence erupted in the city of Minya in August – weeks after Mr Morsi was removed by the military. Defence lawyers said the court ruling was the ‘biggest mass death sentence handed out in Egypt’s modern history’. Mohamed Zaree, of the Cairo Institute for Human Rights Studies, said it was likely the ‘flawed verdicts’ would be overturned on appeal. Amnesty International called the death sentences ‘grotesque’ but Egypt’s foreign office claimed the judiciary is ‘entirely independent’ and not influenced by the government.

f the thought of raw food sends you running for the nearest burger restaurant, just remember it’s so much more than a plate of salad or vegetables. ‘And there are no greasy pans when raw meals are involved,’ says Stephanie Jeffs, 43, founder of Explore Raw. A former financial worker who used to weigh 142kg (22st 5lb), Jeffs left her job and her bulk behind when she started her company. She credits eating a raw plant-based diet for turning her health around and ‘curing’ her polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS). Symptoms include rapid weight gain, fatigue, mood swings, an irregular and heavy menstrual cycle, miscarriages and difficulty losing weight. ‘Suffering with chronic disease was hellish: when my disease – and lack of general health – was at its peak, so was my weight,’ says Jeffs. ‘I dined out a lot with clients so ate unhealthily most nights and would drink lots of calorie-loaded alcohol. ‘But now I’m obsessed with managing my health with my diet and my passion is to support others on their path towards clean eating.’ Jeffs claims the benefits of eating a raw diet are limitless. ‘Clearer skin, better digestion, more energy, weight loss, better sleep, more positivity, clarity of thought and fewer food cravings, to name a few,’ she says. She claims this is because raw foods contain more vitamins, minerals and fibre than cooked ones. ‘The heating process breaks down the nutrients in foods,’ explains Jeffs. ‘Raw food is living food, rich in enzymes and filled with good bacteria. When she changed her diet, Jeffs says her PCOS symptoms slowed and eventually her cycle settled and her weight balanced. ‘I now show no signs of polycystic ovaries,’ she says. ‘I have allowed my body to heal. I have lost more than nine stone (57kg), my skin is glowing and I look and feel much younger.’

BOX One had its most important exclusive so far with Titanfall earlier this month and now it’s PlayStation 4’s turn, with the release of its biggest new game since launch, inFamous: Second Son. The two titles couldn’t be more different: while Titanfall is a multiplayer-only shooter with unremarkable graphics but amazing gameplay, the purely single-player Second Son has some of the best graphics ever seen on a console. A loose sequel to the earlier PS3 games, inFamous is a superhero adventure inspired by more grounded takes on the genre such as the movie Chronicle. After complaints that original hero Cole was a bit of a
ALsO OuT more new releases Metal Gear Solid V: Ground Zeroes (360/Ps3/Xo/Ps4) is described as a ‘prologue’ to the forthcoming metal Gear solid V: The Phantom Pain. with a €35 price tag, there’s controversy over the fact Ground Zeroes (right) can be completed in two hours but bore, you now play as the younger and more enthusiastic Delsin, a Seattle graffiti artist tasked with wresting control of the city from an evil government agency. As with the first games, the moral decisions are still binary ones of good or bad. Even though they allow the story to split along two very different paths, the game does come across as disappointingly trite.
Final Fantasy X/X-2 HD Remaster (Ps3/PsV) is a remake of the 2001 Ps2 game and its less well regarded sequel. both titles have some cringeworthy dialogue but the effort that’s been put in dwarfs other HD updates. although action rPG The Witch And The Hundred Knight (Ps3) has a similar range of options to the Disgaea series, the characters aren’t nearly as likeable. there is more content if you explore the game world, dabble in the extra options and experiment with the new stealth gameplay. What saves Second Son from mediocrity, though, are those impressive graphics and the quality and variety of its combat. You start with smokebased powers that allow you to hover or glide, as well as pass through air vents and gain access to the roofs of buildings. You can also shoot projectiles which can be upgraded to explosive fireballs or non-lethal knockout gas. Technically, though, Delsin has
only one power, which is to steal the abilities of others. So, as the story progresses, he gains extra abilities. Gradually tailoring those skills works extremely well – in fact, it’s better than any other superhero game. It’s just a shame that, as comic book stories go, this remains one that’s worth experiencing for the action and artwork alone.

REviEwED HP sPecTre X2 UlTrabook Is it a laptop or a tablet? Well, actually, the HP Spectre 13h201ea X2 is both. It’s one of a new breed of mobile computing called a hybrid. With a 13.3in HD screen, a full size backlit tiled keyboard and an Ultra Low Voltage dual-core processor it’s comfortable enough and fast enough for everyday computing.
And, if you fancy a spot of dual screening in front of the telly simply detach the screen from the keyboard and you have a 13.3in tablet. It’s a beautiful, sleek looking unit, with a champagne gold, truffle brown colour and an aluminium finish. The screen on this computer is excellent, bright, sharp and vibrant. The HP runs Windows 8.1, Microsoft’s newish colourful and intuitive tile design operating system. While Windows 8 can be used via the keyboard alone, having a touch screen makes it a much more satisfying and easier experience. The screen in this computer is quick and responsive but the keyboard is less impressive. For touch typing, it is a bit erratic and certain keys had to be hit extra hard. In saying that, the unit was just out of the box so maybe it
would have loosened up in time. The device itself is slim and light, however, with its large screen the tablet element is heavier than most and is probably best suited to using on your lap rather than carrying around. The Spectre X2 has Beats Audio and the sound is excellent. The speaker is well placed along the base of the screen. Audio is impressive from the device but it’s further enhanced with a decent set of headphones. Battery life is also very good with a power unit in both the detachable screen and the base. Overall, the HP Spectre X2 is a beautiful looking, versatile premium laptop that can double as a high quality work device or as a handy portable entertainment unit. Islands that time forgot Samoa, home to the biggest cultural festival in the South Pacific, is a tiny country where time has stood still, writes Lisa Scott
W
hen Samoa Air recently announced it would start charging passengers by weight rather than seat, it was deemed fairly controversial. not least because Samoa has battled obesity since fast food was introduced to its remote islands in the 1960s. But the airline stuck to its guns and here I am, in the middle of the South Pacific, standing on a set of scales in a very warm airport. My journey from Upolu island to Savai’i takes just 15 minutes and, at a rate of 40c per kilo, costs a mere €24.62. Samoa is formed of two main islands and a handful of smaller ones (American Samoa sits about 60km east) and from my seat in the sky, they are emerald specks in the Pacific Ocean. Samoa sits between new Zealand and hawaii and is the land time forgot: pigs run wild, chiefs rule, men wear skirts (more on that later) and families live in fales, homes with no walls. Robert Louis Stevenson lived here until he died in 1894; his mansion now a beautiful museum with an outdoor pool that you can splash about in as he did. After gaining independence from new Zealand in 1962, the nation relies on fruit and vegetable exports and tourism. And with just six months until its annual cultural Teuila festival – a carnival with fire knife dancing, cooking and tattooing – the locals hope europeans visiting Australia and new Zealand will tag a few days on to their journey and say Talofa to Samoa. Once on Savai’i, we visit Taga village’s blowholes, sea caves that grow upwards, propelling vertical jets of water when waves hit. An old man hovers so close to one, I can barely look at him. ‘has he lost something?’ I ask my guide, Anthony. Suddenly the old man throws a coconut into the hole and jumps back as the water roars upwards causing it to explode in pieces around us. now I get it:
Blue lagoon: Slippery steps lead to Sua Ocean Trench alaMy
he’s the entertainment. ‘What if he falls in?’ I ask. ‘he’ll be fine, he’ll just be dragged out to sea,’ Anthony says nonchalantly, looking in the other direction. Samoans are comfortable around water because there’s plenty of it. Afu Aau Falls, surrounded by rainforest, is picture-perfect.
We even find an amorous couple unaware they’re no longer alone. The Sua Ocean Trench in Lotofaga, a giant sinkhole filled with sparkling seawater and surrounded by green hanging vines, is filled with pink tourists during the day but return just before sunset and you’ll have it all to yourself. I

climb down the steep, slippery ladder, so high my legs turn to jelly, and dive in, exploring its depths until the dusky eeriness gets the better of me. Sinkholes, waterfalls, coral reefs and lagoons: beautiful, yes, uncommon in the South Pacific? no. What sets Samoa apart from the likes of Fiji is its remarkable way of life. This is a country where 12 family members live in one fale, where children play rugby with a plastic bottle, where dinner is always served to the grandparents first and where the eldest son lives with his parents until they die. ‘It’s a family island,’ Anthony tells me as we sit on Lalomanu Beach, rated one of the best in the world by Lonely Planet, and share eggplant, taro and oka ceviche covered with coconut cream. Samoa’s police force is tiny, so the 25,000 chiefs enforce village political systems. They decide on punishments, which include fines paid with pigs, cattle, tinned food, cash or even the burning of property. And each village is meticulous – some still a little battered from the 2009 tsunami – but blooming with pink, red and yellow flower gardens. There are even competitions to see which village is the neatest. Saturday night in the capital city Apia is all about Beach Road and we stop at the RSA club, a huge dance hall with a corrugated iron roof, tiled floors and rules that state: ‘Respect the ladies… bring your wife or girlfriend if you like to dance.’ Conversation soon turns to the men wearing skirts and flowers in their hair. ‘They are the Fa’afafine; the third gender,’ says Anthony, who explains that although they are male (sometimes raised as girls by their parents), tend to have relationships with men and are undeniably camp, they are not gay. Of course they’re not, we say. We may find this concept questionable but the bubble Samoa exists in, where women, elders, a third gender and the environment are affectionately respected, is as refreshing as the Pacific’s tropical breeze. Walk on the weird side With new flights from Europe and the world’s biggest music festivals, Austin, Texas, is reaping the rewards of keeping it strange, says Jonathan Thompson
D
allas had the TV show, Houston had the problem – and austin has the music. The quirky capital of Texas might be smaller than its more populous, polished neighbours but it’s outshining them both. This month, it again played host to south By southwest, the colossal music and film festival that attracts more than 300,000 music fans a year. In June, the city will enjoy its first ever X Games, having plucked the rights to the ‘Olympics of extreme sports’ from la’s back pocket. austin’s rise from sleepy to sleek and hip has been rapid. Forbes recently cited it as the fastest-growing city in the Us, with a population that mushroomed by 50 per cent between 2000 and 2010. It’s an ascent powered by a young, energetic vibe, 300 days of sunshine a year and, above all, weirdness. ‘Keep austin Weird’ is a shibboleth displayed all over town: on car bumpers, in shop windows, on T-shirts in the bars and music venues that clog the city’s main social artery, sixth street (referred to as ‘Dirty sixth’ by locals). That sense of quirkiness is the fuel that’s driven austin to become the progressive, creative hub of the south, and quite possibly the coolest city in america. Walking down the sun-glazed sidewalk of Dirty sixth feels like soaking up a cocktail of all the best bits of americana in one place: the laid-back cool of Portland, Oregon meets the live music of Nashville; the street

When: March 11-16 What: So you’ve just missed this year, but there’s ample time now to plan for next year’s music, film and technology festival attracting 300,000 people to Austin each spring. (Picture: Damon Albarn of the Good, The Bad and The Queen, who played there in 2007). partying of New Orleans under permanently blue Californian skies. some might consider it presumptuous that austin styles itself ‘The live Music Capital Of The World’ – and has even trademarked the title – but it has the musical muscle to back its claim. It boasts more live music venues per capita than anywhere else in the Us (250 at the last count) and is home to dozens of festivals, including two of the biggest on the calendar: austin City limits and south By southwest (see box). It’s not just the music scene hitting the right notes: austin has the first purpose-built Formula 1 track in the Us, the Circuit Of The americas, which can house 120,000 fans and is the home of the X Games as well as the Us Grand Prix. Then, of course, there’s the food. Texans are all about barbecue and I scoff all sorts of stickyfingered delights, from the time-
less institution that is stubb’s Bar-B-Q to the recently opened Barley swine, already hailed as one of the finest barbecue restaurants in North america by GQ. another new addition to the foodie scene is the excellent lambert’s, which serves fancy BBQ out of the town’s restored 140-year-old general store. Then add more than 1,600 food trailers serving everything from Goan curry to pad Thai tacos. Predictably, many of austin’s eateries serve up a side order of weird. at Way south Philly, a cheese steak restaurant on East sixth street, the waiting staff are all ordained ministers. so you can enjoy a steak sandwich and get married for $60 (inset). some of austin’s most exciting new developments centre on Rainey street. We stroll over from the bright lights of Dirty sixth and find ourselves on what appears to be a suburban back street with quiet wooden verandas and picket fences.
But appearances are regularly deceiving in austin. at least a dozen of the wooden ranch-style homes have been gutted and converted into dishevelled chic bars, all creaking floorboards, swinging lamps and moonshine cocktails. The creative force behind this über-hip volte-face is Texan entrepreneur Bridget Dunlap, who owns three of the shiniest diamonds in the former rough: Bar 96, Clive Bar and the venue that started it all, lustre Pearl. We finish our final evening over cocktails in the Pearl. From the outside, it looks as if the Waltons could live here but there are no children playing in the dusty backyard, only cool kids drinking Vanilla White Russians while engaging in impromptu hula hoop dance-offs. Davy Crockett once famously said: ‘You may all go to hell but I will go to Texas.’ He was trying to persuade the Us senate to aid Texas in its battle with Mexico but the sentiment rings true today. It sums up a state with a unique attitude and energy – and a capital that personifies it. Crockett had the right idea: if this is weird, you can keep normal.

Thrashing just a bump in the road, says Wenger by gAvin bROWn Arsene Wenger compared Arsenal to a good driver who has had a nasty accident as his team try to get over the trauma of saturday’s 6-0 drubbing at Chelsea. The gunners will get back behind the wheel tonight at home to swansea and Wenger has urged his players to focus on the progress that’s been made this season rather than dwell on the car crash at stamford Bridge. ‘You have to put that into perspective, we just came out of two convincing results at Bayern Munich and at Tottenham with a very solid defensive performance so you have to think that was an accident,’ said Wenger. ‘How do you deal with the accident? You repair the damage and you go for the next one. ‘An accident has happened, that doesn’t mean that you’re not a good driver. It just means we have played about 40 games this season and it’s not what happened on saturday that reflects the quality of this team. ‘We have 62 points we earned hard with quality games and that’s what we want to
Minor damage: Wenger focus on, to get back to that quality.’ Wenger also pointed out that being 3-0 down and reduced to ten men after 20 minutes at Chelsea did nothing to help Arsenal’s cause. There was good news on that front yesterday when the Football Association rescinded Kieran gibbs’ red card – which should have been shown to Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain – and accepted the gunners’ appeal against Andre Marriner’s decision, meaning neither player will be banned. Marriner also received a boost after being appointed to referee southampton’s trip to newcastle at the weekend rather than, as predicted, being given the week off. Despite the availability of gibbs and Oxlade-Chamberlain Wenger will make changes tonight, adding: ‘some players have given a lot. We will try to find the right balance.’

ARTETA ‘sORRY’ fOR bRiDgE bATTERing Mikel ArtetA has issued an apology to Arsenal fans following the Gunners’ 6-0 ‘embarrassment’ at Chelsea on Saturday. Arteta insists the players are all feeling the pain and will be doing their utmost to rectify the situation when Swansea visit the emirates Stadium tonight. ‘it’s not good enough with the way we started the game,’ the Spaniard told the club’s website.
‘We have to take it on the chin because it’s unacceptable to lose another big game like this. ‘the pressure we put on ourselves by losing games like that is massive and there’s no need for it. i don’t know what else to say apart from sorry to everyone at the club, the fans, and we promise that we will try hard to put that right. ‘it hurts deeply inside. it’s embarrassing to be on a football pitch in that situation.’

Dundalk in driving seat with away win ShaMRoCk RovERS.........1 DuNDaLk............................2 (SEMI-FINaL, FIRST LEg)
A brACe of first half penalties from richie towell considerably loosened holders Shamrock rovers’ grip on their Setanta Sports Cup trophy as Dundalk left tallaght Stadium full value for this semi-final, first leg victory. Showing no signs of their quick turnaround from playing in Sligo on Saturday night. Dundalk started much the better, taking a deserved lead on 11 minutes. that came from towell’s first penalty after rovers’ keeper Craig Hyland was fortunate only to receive a yellow card for taking down John Mountney who had run clean through on to skipper Stephen O’Donnell’s sublime ball. Passing the ball far better against the league leaders, Dundalk doubled their advantage from a second spot kick on 33 minutes. Chris Shields fed Mountney on the right and he was tripped by rovers’ Conor kenna. towell once again scored confidently from 12 yards. rovers brought ronan Finn into their midfield at the interval, but it was Dundalk schemer towell who carved the first opening of the second half, Hyland promptly off his line to save at the feet of David McMillan. the visitors continued to be the more dangerous side with substitute Patrick Hoban somehow side-footing wide when he might have all but put the tie to bed. eamon Zayed kept it alive for the return at Oriel Park on April 15, though, pulling a goal back for rovers on 84 minutes, poking the ball into the roof of the net after Gary McCabe put over a low cross from the left.

Moyes: City aren’t that much better There are still two teams in Manchester, says United boss
On song: Rooney scored a double at West Ham PICTURE: PA
by DAvE fiLMER DaviD Moyes is determined to prove Manchester remains home to two major footballing forces when United host free-scoring City tonight. Touted as a potential title decider when the season’s fixtures were released, the match is far from it, with 12 points between third-placed City and United in seventh. Before City played Barcelona in the Champions League last month, manager Manuel Pellegrini famously said: ‘if we only consider this season, there is just one club in Manchester – and it’s ours.’ To some, it was a mere statement of fact, to others, it was unnecessary goading and will no doubt have hit a nerve at old Trafford. For that reason, United may take even more pleasure than usual if they beat their fierce rivals tonight. ‘i think it’s important for us to show the level we’ve got – and that we’re not as far away as many people would have us,’ Moyes said. For the first time in a generation, City will head across town as favourites to beat their neighbours, who they thrashed 4-1 in the autumn at the etihad stadium. Pellegrini tried to play down the tag, saying: ‘We are playing against a big team in their own stadium, so i don’t think we are the favourites. ‘of course we always expect to go and win every game but, i repeat, just because Manchester United have had a difficult season it does not mean we are going to win. ‘We have to go there and make sure we play a very good game.’ Moyes will look to the likes of Wayne Rooney to lead the way tonight – though stopped short of calling him his main man. ‘This game has got many, many top-class players in it, so i wouldn’t necessarily say he’s the main man, but he’s certainly one of them,’ Moyes said.

David Moyes and Manuel Pellegrini have had vastly different first years in the job – and nothing illustrates that more than their league records. Here are some stats to highlight their respective domestic campaigns
