Uncoupling tickles public consciousness

SYMPATHY for Gwyneth Paltrow and Chris Martin was in short supply on the internet. Fans mocked the clean-living couple for referring to their split as a ‘conscious uncoupling’. Erin Schulte wrote on Twitter:

‘Gwyneth Paltrow can’t even break up in a non-annoying way. “Conscious uncoupling”. Ugh.’ Another named Mary posted: ‘Gwyneth Paltrow and Chris Martin.. conscious uncoupling.. WTF is that... these people make

me gag.’ Hollywood Reporter editor Debbie Emery said the phrasing was typical of 41-year-old Paltrow. ‘The “conscious uncoupling” is very, very much like the way she speaks in normal life,’ she added.

Parting superstars had final night on island of the free by ANDREI HARMSWORTH and JENNI MCKNIGHT

I’M KIND OF A BIG DEAL: Actor Kristian Nairn was on the red carpet at the Light House Cinema in Dublin last night with co-stars Liam Cunningham, Michael McElhatton and Ian McElhinney for a special premiere screening of the first episode of the new series of Game Of Thrones which returns on Monday week on Sky Atlantic Picture: kieran harnett

GWYNETH PALTROW and Chris Martin were enjoying one last hurrah together on the beaches of the Bahamas as the ‘conscious uncoupling’ of their ten-year marriage was announced. They were away on the island of Eleuthera with their children Apple, nine, and seven-year-old son Moses. The island’s name is from the Greek word eleutheros, meaning ‘free’ or ‘unshackled’. Coldplay’s frontman now faces a lengthy commute to see his children in LA when he moves back to Britain. The couple relocated to LA last year ‘temporarily’ to appease homesick Gwyn but she decided to stay to be near her 71-year-old mother Blythe Danner. ‘The plan now is for Gwyneth to remain in California, with their children,’ said a source. ‘Chris will absolutely be moving back to London, but will commute back and forth to see the kids. ‘Chris doesn’t have any family or friends in Los Angeles. His Coldplay bandmates are based in London, and that is where his world is.’ But another

HAUNTED BY HER VIEWS ON FIDELITY

Happy: At a charity gala in January source said: ‘It’s not a sad thing, they’re grown-ups. They’re best friends. Most important are the kids and they will continue to co-parent. ‘They’re in a great place. They tried, but know this is a better way for them to be. They still love each other, but they realise it’s best not to be a couple. ‘They both really believed in the sanctity of marriage and the role model it provided for their kids. Both of their parents were married their entire lives, and they really wanted the same.’

GWYNETH PALTROW may regret airing her views on cheating in the wake of her split from Chris Martin. The 41-year-old, who previously admitted she was ‘flawed’ and would hope to be forgiven if she did the dirty, was forced to deny she had strayed from the Coldplay frontman only a month ago. Her publicist shot down rumours, aired on secretsharing app Whisper, that the Iron Man actress was linked to entertainment lawyer Kevin Yorn. He also rubbished claims made in Vanity Fair she had cheated on Martin, 37, with Elle Macpherson’s husband, Jeffrey Soffer.

Papal Belfast trip to be considered POPE Francis is set to be invited to Belfast. City councillors are due to debate a motion asking the pontiff to travel north of the border if he visits the Republic. SDLP councillor Pat McCarthy, who tabled the proposal ahead of next week’s meeting at Belfast City Hall, said it could send out a positive message. Mr McCarthy wants the Stormont Assembly to extend a similar invitation. Last month the Seanad agreed to invite Pope Francis to Ireland. Independent senator David Norris said a visit by the pontiff would ‘lift the spirits’ of the country.

A TeACheR in Loretto College, Foxrock, has been told by a judge to pay €50,000 damages to a jeweller he made defamatory remarks about. Judge Jacqueline Linnane heard what former friend Michael O’Flaherty had said about Breasal O’Caollai could have ruined his business. Mr O’Caollai, of Royal Terrace West, Dún Laoghaire, told the Circuit Civil Court that O’Flaherty had asked Bianca Drumm and Linda Carroll, who worked in the National Maritime Museum in Dún Laoghaire, of which he was a director, ‘does Breasal take money from the coffee shop takings’ and ‘does he take cash from the tills?’ he had also suggested to another staff member that he ‘supposed Breasal had taken the proceeds’ of an art exhibition. Mr O’Caollai told the court he was elected treasurer at an annual general meeting after O’Flaherty had asked him to help with the museum. They had been friends but O’Flaherty had developed a grudge against him. Denying there was any basis for claims he has his hand in the till, Mr O’Caollai said ‘mere rumour’ could have put him out of business.

Data commissioner ‘knew nothing of Garda tapings’ The Data Protection Commission ‘knew nothing’ about the Garda taping thousands of phone calls despite completing an audit on the force a month before the recording was stopped. Commissioner Billy hawkes, whose report on the review of Garda handling of sensitive information was published last week, revealed his office was not informed about the surveillance until March 19, when the force sought advice on how to dispose of the recordings.

by eD carty The watchdog said callers to Garda stations should have been told they were being taped and people being called by officers should also have been alerted. And it said anyone who believes they were recorded by gardaí has the right to get an audio copy or transcript of the conversation. The Data Protection Commission said its audit did not include telephone surveillance and a decision on

whether to investigate further will not be taken until the terms of reference for a commission of inquiry are finalised. A spokeswoman for the agency – tasked with protecting the public’s right to privacy – said the scope of its review of the Garda’s data protection policy was based on complaints it had received and queries for advice. She said the issue of phonecalls and surveillance on telephones was not raised as an issue prior to the audit.

The report on the review was completed at the end of February but only published by the Garda last Friday as demands intensified for former commissioner Martin Callinan to withdraw his ‘disgusting’ remark about whistleblowers. The force also confirmed the taping of non-999 phonecalls stopped last autumn. Officials spoke with senior officers in Garda headquarters to say material should be kept only if it is needed for legal reasons.

€500,000 cost of digital recording system

Callinan: Recording costs

Garda chiefs shelled out more than €500,000 for a digital recording system to be placed in 21 stations around the country six years ago. Official records reveal Finglas-based company Sigma Wireless Ltd was awarded the contract to install the 24-hours, seven-days-a-week system, which includes recording, playback and archive capabilities. It was to be connected into existing telephone

networks at the Garda headquarters in the Phoenix Park as well as its HQ in Harcourt Street – home to elite units, including the National Bureau of Criminal Investigation and the Criminal assets Bureau. Tender notices required the technology to be compatible with traditional analogue and modern digital systems and allow recordings to be played back at designated workstations.

Justice Minister alan Shatter said the dictaphone recorders used at Garda stations during the 1990s were replaced in 2008 by a system developed by Israeli company NICE. Training of 30 people to operate the system was part of the three-year deal. Sigma, founded by Tony Boyle and Michael McGinley, was awarded the contract in april 2008 at a cost of €537,173.45 before VaT.

Satellite spots 122 pieces of debris ‘from Flight 370’

DOZENS of pieces of debris have been spotted floating in the sea by a French satellite searching for the missing Malaysia Airlines flight. A total of 122 objects were discovered in a scan of the southern Indian Ocean that Malaysian defence minister Hishammuddin Hussein called: ‘The most credible lead that we have.’ Clouds obscured the latest satellite images, but dozens of objects could be seen in the gaps that ranged in length from one to 25 metres. Mr Hishammuddin said some of them ‘appeared to be bright, possibly indicating solid materials’. The images were taken on Sunday and relayed by Frenchbased Airbus Defence and Space, a

by SHAROn MARRiS division of Europe’s Airbus Group. They come after an Australian satellite detected two large objects and a Chinese satellite detected one in the same area. A data analysis by experts showed the doomed Beijing-bound flight was lost about 2,500km west of Perth, Australia. About a dozen planes and five ships from the US, China, Japan, South Korea, Australia and New Zealand were searching in rough seas but – as of last night – no wreckage has been found. Australian prime minister Tony Abbott said: ‘We’re throwing every-

thing we have at this search. This is about the most inaccessible spot imaginable. It’s thousands of kilometres from anywhere.’ Meanwhile, relatives of the 239 passengers on board the plane met Malaysian government officials and airline officials with scepticism and ridicule during a briefing in Beijing.

Mr Hishammuddin appeared to contradict a text message from Malayasian authorities that said everyone on board the March 8 flight had died. ‘If the debris is confirmed to be from MH370, then we can move on to deep sea surveillance search and rescue, hopefully, hoping against hope,’ added Mr Hishammuddin.

Make mine a Wrong-un by HAyDEN SMiTH

Get real, study tells parents of Pooh lovers ONCE upon a time, there was a bear who lived in the woods and piglets, owls and donkeys were not his friends. Being unable to talk he had no way of telling anyone about his adventures. The end. It’s a bedtime story that would have children asking ‘is that all?’ But it might be a healthier choice of tale for your offspring than Winnie the Pooh. Traditional stories hinder children’s learning by making them think animals wear clothes and interact like people, a new study claims. Parents don’t need to stop reading children books like The Gruffalo or Watership Down, but should ensure they are also exposed to factual animal books, the journal Frontiers in Psychology reports.

HE HAS committed crimes against humanity and now a crime against good taste. North Korea’s dictator Kim Jong-un has ordered the country’s 10million men to get the same haircut as him. The bizarre decree was introduced in state-sanctioned guidelines in the capital Pyongyang two weeks ago. A cheeky barber would probably call it the ‘Wrong-un’. In North Korea such talk can cost your life. But if anything can stir his long-suffering people into revolt, surely this will. With its buzz-cut sides and slick centre parting his hairdo is never going to earn admirers. It is now being rolled out across the country and grumblings of discontent are surfacing. One source told Radio Free Asia: ‘Our leader’s haircut is very particular, if you will. It doesn’t always go with everyone since everyone has different face and head shapes.’ Until the latest restrictive poli-

That used to be called the Bermuda Triangle not 20 years ago, when the world still had mysteries: The Loch Ness Monster. The Jesus Christ. All we want to do is screw things and kill things, and look nice, and damn the consequences. Live and let die, because diamonds are forever, and tomorrow never dies, so die another day. Interestingly, Die Another Day pitted Bond against 24million North Koreans who face the prospect of dying every day.

You’re past your peak, ex-producer warns Gaga

L

ady Gaga has been dealt a kicking by her former musical partnerin-crime akon after he declared the pop shocker has ‘nowhere left to go but down’. akon has ‘cashed out’ of his musical partnership with Gaga after his company KonLive distributed her first three hit albums The Fame, The Fame Monster, and Born This Way. ‘I got out while the goin’ was good. ‘It’s like a business; you build it to sell it,’ the 40year-old told radio show Sway In The Morning. Sharing no loyalty with his former cash cow, the R‘n’B star warned Gaga that he reckons she’s a spent force in the charts. ‘When I got it to the peak of where I felt it couldn’t go nowhere, and there was nowhere left to go but down, I cashed out. I sold my share and got out,’ he said. akon said the ruthless decision to pull the plug on Gaga was just business. He added: ‘I know how the business works.

tanding on top of a snowy mountain holding an eagle about half the size of her, ashol Pan represents the changing face of a centuries-old tradition. the 13-year-old is the only girl in Mongolia to be trained in hunting with eagles. in the past, this sight would have been unthinkable, but she is being taught to control these magnificent birds of prey in place of her brother who has been drafted into the army. Usually, fathers teach their sons to hunt when they are aged 13 and deemed strong enough to carry a fully-grown eagle. ashol’s father, Han, said it was unlikely her brother would return. But, despite her training, he added he would never think of making her take up the role full-time unless she specifically asked. Her training was captured by asher Svidensky, who chose to focus on the next generation of hunters keeping this dying part of their culture alive. the israeli-Russian photogra-

‘Still hope’ of survivors as mudslide deaths reach 24

by AiDAn RADnEDgE

RESCUERS using bulldozers and their bare hands found ten more bodies in the debris of the Washington state mudslide, bringing the death toll to 24. Emergency workers made the grim discoveries as they battled their way through sludge strewn with splintered homes and twisted cars. With 176 people still unaccounted for as the search entered its fifth day yesterday, the authorities said the list of fatalities could rise but the rescue operation would continue. ‘We haven’t lost hope that there is a possibility that we can find somebody alive in some pocket area,’ said county fire chief Travis Hots yesterday. Two bodies were recovered on Tuesday while eight were located in the debris from Saturday’s slide 88km (55 miles) north-east of Seattle. Yesterday, hundreds of rescuers and heavy equipment operators continued to push through the wreckage and muck which has engulfed the community of Oso. Owing to safety concerns they followed search dogs over the unstable surface. ‘Going on the last three days, our most effective tool has been dogs and just our bare hands and shovels uncovering people,’ said Mr Hots.

Al-Qaeda’s voice faces life in jail OSAMA bIn LAden’s sonin-law faces life in prison after he was convicted of three terrorism-related charges at a new York court yesterday. Sulaiman Abu Ghaith was found guilty of conspiring to kill Americans in his role as an al-Qaeda spokesman after the 9/11 attacks, as well as counts of proving support and conspiring to provide support to the organisation. The Kuwaiti clergyman argued his role was purely religious.

Terror strike by ‘jihadist’ foiled

In the mire: A rescuer stands by a boat amid sludge and debris from the collapsed hillside in Washington state Picture: ePA Meanwhile a row over landslide fears in the area continued to escalate. It emerged that, in 2000, engineers warned

lives would be at risk if the hillside collapsed and, in 1999, experts questioned why houses had ever been built there.

The last major landslide in the area, known as the ‘Hazel Landslide’, was in 2006.

A TeRRORIST plot led by a ‘jihadist’ recently back from fighting in Syria has been foiled, it was revealed yesterday. The ‘imminent’ strike on the south of France was unearthed when 900g (2lbs) of explosives were found in a flat used by Ibrahim b, who is believed to be a member of the CannesTorcy cell. A source close to the case said that the 23year-old was arrested last month in Mandelieu-lanapoule and jailed.

Worker’s last-gasp escape from burning building is captured on a mobile phone

Just hang on: The helmeted construction worker holds on to a balcony, top left, before climbing down to a firefighter’s ladder and being helped away as the walls collapse in flames Pictures: AP

We’ve got you ... just seconds before fireball

A LONE figure desperately hangs on to a balcony as flames rip through the top floor of an unfinished apartment block. The trapped construction worker waves to a firefighter who crawls towards him on a ladder... and plucks him to safety seconds before the burning walls collapse. This dramatic sequence of events was captured on a mobile phone by Texas office worker Karen Jones. Watching from a nearby campus, she uploaded the footage to YouTube where it received more than 570,000 views in 16 hours. The fire could be seen from miles away on Tuesday when it engulfed the €36million high-rise block under construction in Houston. As more than 200 firefighters battled the blaze, the helmeted worker jumped down

by SHAROn MARRiS on to a lower balcony to escape the searing heat. Seconds later the room behind where he had been standing turned into a fireball, the windows shattering and exploding outwards. He appeared impressively calm as his rescuers moved the ladder into place. Coolly and professionally, they helped him to safety before the building was almost completely swallowed up by the blaze. Authorities said the fire may have been sparked by workers welding on the roof. There were no injuries, although Captain Ruy Lozano told a TV station that the construction worker had been ‘at the point of jumping’ when he was rescued.

RUSSIAN oligarch Boris Berezovsky became a ‘broken man’ and spoke of suicide after losing a multibillion-pound legal battle with Chelsea FC owner Roman Abramovich, his inquest has heard. The tycoon’s lifeless body was discovered by his bodyguard at his ex-wife’s home in Ascot, Berkshire, on March 23 last year. Months earlier, his £3billion (€3.6bn) litigation case with Mr Abramovich ended in defeat – ‘ruining him’ financially and altering his personality, the hearing was told. Police previously confirmed the Russian exile’s cause of death was ‘consistent with hanging’. Avi Navama, Mr Berezovsky’s

bodyguard of six years, told the Windsor inquest that his boss was ‘very low’ in the last months of his life. Speaking of when he last saw him, the Boris Berezovsky night before finding him dead, Mr Navama said: ‘He looked at me with very low, tired eyes – like he doesn’t know what to do.’ The bodyguard said that, ahead of losing the court battle with Mr Abramovich, Mr Berezovsky was a ‘very dynamic’ person. But he went on: ‘After the verdict, Mr Berezovsky was very depressed. He

used to stay inside all the time in his room.’ Mr Navama said his boss had talked frankly and openly about killing himself – including once brandishing a knife. Asked by the coroner whether Mr Berezovsky’s mental health was a consequence of the case, Mr Navama said: ‘It was the trigger of the change. He told me he was in minus £200million that he can’t pay to people.’ Det Insp Mark Bissell, of Thames Valley Police, said the death was initially treated as ‘unexplained’. He told the hearing the Atomic Weapons Establishment examined the scene owing to radiation concerns but nothing was detected. The inquest continues.

Non-parent employees have lives outside the office too

ame Changer, I hope you didn’t mean to exclude non-parents from flexible working hours. We have lives and families outside the office too, you know. I’ve never once grumbled about my taxes subsidising child benefit, or while picking up the slack for colleagues’ maternity leave, or when they’re looking after a sick kid or it’s their turn for the creche run, etc. However, I don’t see why only parents should have a monopoly on flexi-time. long with the wardrobe-friendly trends that emerge from the runway, each season ushers in trends of the more challenging variety too. Thanks to their shapeless silhouettes, maxi skirts have long sat in that camp along with peplum pieces and playsuits. But one of the most striking recent examples is Birkenstock-type sandals. once universally accepted as among the least appealing footwear, it took months for them to catch on after Phoebe Philo thrust them back into the spotlight when she sent models down the runway in fur-lined versions at Celine’s spring 2013 show. Joining that group this spring is the crop top. Designers have been flirting with them for a while but this season they’re everywhere and played a big part in the 1990s revival that’s dominating the fashion agenda right now. ‘The decade was huge on the runway but in a clean, pared-back way,’ says ShopBop style director Elle Strauss. ‘The return of dungarees gives a nod to that and with it comes the crop top.’

Before you go writing it off altogether, the charm of the crop top’s latest incarnation is that it’s shaken off its girl-band connotations. ‘It doesn’t feel clubby or Spice Girls any more,’ says Strauss. The new versions are infinitely more grown up and don’t require washboard abs to pull them off. The secret to nailing the look lies in subtlety. ‘Experimenting with a crop top doesn’t mean exposing your midriff,’ explains Matches Fashion.com buying manager Suzanne Pendlebury. ‘But it can be the perfect way to show off high-waisted jeans or skirts to achieve an ultra-feminine, nipped-in silhouette.’ Gone are the slashed T-shirt styles of yesteryear and

“The perfect way to show off highwaisted jeans or skirts” in their place are crop tops that are less about the stomach and more about the waist.

At Dolce & Gabbana and Michael Kors, for example, crop tops were teamed with ladylike A-line skirts that felt like a modern twist on the summer two-piece. At Diane von Furstenberg, they were styled with skirts that emphasised the female form and oozed glamour. ‘The silhouettes now are more sophisticated,’ adds Strauss. ‘It’s all about knowing your figure and drawing attention to the best bits.’ It hasn’t gone unnoticed. From luxury online retailers such as FarFetch and Avenue 32, to high-street stores Topshop and H&M, everyone is getting in on the action. But no one taps into the zeitgeist quite like Zara and this season it has covered all bases. From bold embroidery and lace details to some of the more sporty varieties, the choice there is endless, and with prices averaging around the £19.99 mark, they won’t break the budget. Ireland’s turbulent history is traced via a life-long journey tainted by alcohol in Sebastian Barry’s The Temporary Gentleman writes Siobhan Murphy

The Black Snow

by Paul Lynch (Quercus) Following his muchpraised debut, Red Sky In Morning, Lynch gives us an unrelentingly grim portrait of 1945 rural Ireland, hewed from granite-like, starkly poetic prose. Farmer Barnabas Kane, who returns to Carnarvan from the US with a wife and child, is slowly torn asunder when his byre and cattle burn to the ground and his farmhand dies in the fire. A tough and sinewy tragedy.

ovelist, poet and playwright sebastian Barry has been embarked upon a monumental fictional journey since the 1990s – looking to map an alternative history of 20th-century ireland by using the stories of his relatives. these are ordinary men and women often caught up in the maelstrom of events and dumped on the peripheries of official accounts: ‘scraps of people, blown off the road of life by history’s hungry breezes,’ as he has described it. so the story of Jack McNulty, the narrator of the temporary Gentleman, fits into a rich tapestry: it’s a fictionalised imagining of Barry’s maternal grandfather, and a character we’ve met before, in his 1998 novel, the Whereabouts of eneas McNulty (about his great-uncle, Jack’s elder brother), and his 1998 play our lady of sligo. Here, ensconced in a newly independent Ghana in 1957, McNulty feels compelled to grapple with a personal history that up to now he has left firmly wrapped in a fog; he wants to write an account of his life to serve as a reckoning before he returns to ireland and starts a new chapter. there is, it slowly becomes clear, much to be reckoned with, in a life of failed dreams, squandered promise and grievous loss, which extend ominously into his current activities. A blithe young man in sligo, McNulty woos and wins the lovely, mercurial Mai Kirwan, despite her father’s stern disapproval of ‘the buveur of sligo’, as he names him – a first hint of horrors to come. McNulty’s engineering work takes him far from ireland, to the Gold Coast at

by Hugo Hamilton (Fourth Estate) This is Hamilton’s fictionalised account of the trip he took with celebrated journalist and author Nuala O’Faolain, who was dying of cancer and wished for one last adventure. As Una and Liam, the pair tussle with painful memories – O’Faolain’s unforgiving memoirs brought her fame – and clash over notions of forgiveness as Berlin’s sights flash by. Hamilton’s warm attentiveness makes this a loving homage to an indomitable woman.

The Temporary GenTleman by Sebastian Barry Faber & Faber HHHHI one point, with Mai in tow, then leads him to take up a temporary commission (hence the book’s title) in the British Army during World War ii and to work in bomb disposal. Barry handles the slow, painful coming to terms with an appalling truth with a dramatist’s measured

skill, and the fierce eye of a poet who finds beauty in the most shabby occurrences. McNulty is a man revealed to have failed on many counts, and to have deeply hurt those closest to him, but Barry reaches beyond opprobrium to search out the humanity in this damaged man. in so doing, he adds another vivid chapter to his revised history of the nation.

by Edna O’Brien (Faber & Faber) Collected for the first time, O’Brien’s enchanting short stories – written across five decades – shimmer with vitality and shiver with empathy for her varied characters, particularly the ‘strange sacrificial women’ who suffer myriad injustices in the world of men but soldier on. She can summon a life in a phrase: the woman forced to do ‘a flit in the night’, for instance, who ‘did not even have time to get her shoes back from the cobblers’.

Spinning heart: author donal ryan is featured in this year’s Franco-irish literary Festival

The 15th annual Franco-irish literary Festival begins next month (april 46) and what’s particularly heartening, given the calibre of the participating authors, is that every event is free and open to all. This year, the three-day, dualvenue festival (George’s hall at dublin castle and alliance Française on kildare Street) poses the question: ‘can lives be changed?’ as such, expect themes of exile, metamorphosis and rebirth to be potential motifs in readings, discussions and workshops featuring a smorgasbord of top homegrown and Gallic literary talents.

organised jointly by the alliance Française dublin and the cultural Section of the French embassy, this year’s event will play host to such esteemed authors as laura alcoba, whose celebrated memoir The rabbit house offers a childeyed account of argentina’s dirty war, during which statesponsored death squads were to ‘disappear’ an estimated 30,000 people. She’ll be joined by esteemed French writers including philippe vasset whose high-concept satire ScriptGenerator©ÆTm imagines a world where a computer software program renders human authors

redundant. irish writers on this year’s programme include donal ryan, whose novels The Spinning heart and The Thing about december have seen him acquire ‘national treasure’ status; eimear mcBride who, thanks to her critically-adored debut a Girl is a half Formed Thing, was the only irish author to be nominated for this year’s inaugural Folio prize; and poets john montague and Theo dorgan, among many others. Kompany hails ‘historic’ night in manchester VINCeNt KOMPANY insists every victory on their travels at Old trafford is a huge coup for his Manchester City side. It may have been easy at times for the visitors but skipper Kompany knows the

Derby delight: kompany value of beating United cannot be underestimated. ‘every single win at Old trafford is one of those things that goes down in history,’ he

Liverpool have momentum, and Chelsea too.’

It’s the frozen one as Old Trafford banner stays

tHe ‘Chosen One’ banner displaying Manchester United fans’ backing for the appointment of David Moyes is set to stay on display at Old trafford, despite calls for it to be removed. After a brief respite last week, United’s miserable season resumed with a 3-0 defeat to Manchester City on tuesday. Fans vented their fury at Moyes – one had to be escorted away after approaching the dugout – and there were reports of abuse being

aimed at sir Alex Ferguson in the directors’ box. the 72-year-old hand-picked Moyes as his successor and, for that reason, a banner has hung in the stretford end featuring the former everton manager’s face with the words

‘the Chosen One’. Fans called on the group which made the banner – stretford end Flags (seF) – to remove it following the 3-0 loss to Liverpool and, after the derby defeat, similar noises were made.

However, it is understood seF has no intention of taking the banner down ahead of saturday’s Premier League clash with Aston Villa. Meanwhile, the Manchester United supporters trust (MUst) thinks the Red Devils’ troubles are not solely down to Moyes. MUst spokesperson sean Bones said: ‘the problems lie deeper than David Moyes. they sit at the table of [owners] the Glazers. ‘the Glazers have not invested correctly at the critical times.’

West Ham took another step towards Premier League safety last night as they returned to winning ways at Upton Park. A Mark Noble penalty set the Hammers on their way to a win which ended a three-match losing streak and left them 11th, nine points above the drop zone. the result was harsh on Hull who had keeper Allan McGregor controversially sent off for fouling Mohamed Diame, leading to Noble’s 26th-minute opener. the visitors’ hopes of a share of the spoils were boosted when Nikica Jelavic levelled from a free-kick shortly after the break but their joy proved short-lived as James Chester diverted Guy Demel’s hopeful cross into his own net minutes later.

Van Gaal the ideal man for united, says De Boer LOUIS VAN GAAL has been touted as the perfect Manchester United manager should David Moyes be sacked. A 3-0 derby defeat to neighbours Manchester City at a stunned Old Trafford on Tuesday was the latest blow in a season of turmoil for the champions. Despite Sir Bobby Charlton’s insistence Moyes will not be replaced, his future is under scrutiny as his reign stumbles from one calamity to another. Former Holland midfielder Ronald de Boer, who played for Van Gaal at Ajax and Barcelona, is confident his

He has so much quality he would be successful in England, especially if he is given time to set out his team.’ Van Gaal has also been linked with Tottenham and De Boer believes the 62-year-old’s knack for unearthing young talent would be invaluable at White Hart Lane or Old Trafford. ‘At Bayern he won the Bundesliga and got to the final of the Champions League with young players like Thomas Muller, Holger Badstuber and others,’ he said. ‘No one had heard of them but now Frustration: Moyes during makes his feelings known as United slip to a 3-0 defeat against neighbours City picture: pA everyone is talking about them.’

EUROPEAN rugby bosses are close to reaching an agreement on the elite club tournament to replace the Heineken Cup and an announcement could come as early as today. The 20-team competition is expected to see six Aviva Premiership teams, six clubs from France’s Top 14 competition and seven of the RaboDirect PRO12 sides qualify. The final place would be taken by the winner of a playoff involving clubs from several competitions, including the second-tier touranment that is to replace the Amlin Challenge Cup. There is also expected to be a new third-tier competition in September, from which two qualifiers would then take part in the second-tier tournament, opening it up to clubs from outside the Six Nations countries such as Georgia, Russia, Spain, Romania, Portugal and Belgium. Once an agreement is reached, all parties can then chase a resolution between broadcasters BT Sport and Sky, both of whom have indicated a willingness to agree a TV rights deal. Sky Sports managing director Barney Francis said earlier this month: ‘We are absolutely willing to take part in conversations that lead to a solution that is in the best interests of the game and the fans. But it will take compromise between all parties.’ European Rugby Cup, the governing body of the Heineken Cup, will be wound up in the summer to be replaced with a new name based on the new tournament.
