Change all your passwords now by MarTyn Landi

SEVERAL major technology firms have urged users to change all their passwords in the wake of the Heartbleed security breach. The Heartbleed bug was first reported on Monday after going undetected for more than two years. It bypasses the OpenSSL cryptographic library, which is used online to digitally scramble sensitive information as it passes between computer servers – best known as the padlock icon that appears in the corner of web browser windows to show the page you are using is secure. The bug is a flaw in this system that can give anyone access to the data behind that encryption, such as passwords and credit card details, without leaving a trace. Blogging site Tumblr encouraged users to update all existing passwords: ‘This might be a good day to call in sick and take some time to change your passwords everywhere, especially your high-security services like email, file storage and banking, which may have been compromised,’ it said. Cyber-security research group Codenomicon said the breach ‘allows attackers to eavesdrop on communications, steal data directly… and to impersonate users.’

Something fishy in the water

Dry subject: The interview begins

Has a fake tumble been rumbled? by HAyDEn SMiTH ANY journalist worth their salt is always looking for headline news but this reporter made waves for the wrong reasons... or did she? Martje Oesterholt was interviewing mayor Bort Koelewijn when she found herself at the centre of the story. After greeting the politician, she stood perilously close to the side of a boat in Kampen, Holland. Losing her balance, she tumbled into water with a scream as the horrified Mr Koelewijn looked on. The mayor immediately went to her aid and removed his livery collar in a bid to offer Ms Oesterholt a lifeline. Footage of the fall has now been watched by thousands of amused viewers on YouTube and it was described in one report as possibly ‘the best news blooper ever’. But there were suggestions last

Sinking feeling: Martje Oesterholt plummets from the boat into the water after seemingly losing her balance during an interview with mayor Bort Koelewijn night the clip wasn’t quite as unscripted as it seemed. It emerged that the ‘reporter’ was in fact a marketing executive working on a promotion for Sail Kampen – a major sailing event in the city. Ms Oesterholt herself did little to dampen the scepticism. She tweeted: ‘It’s a promo for Sail Kampen. So it’s a little bit fake...’ The fall echoed the famous Only Fools And Horses scene in which Del Boy toppled to the floor while trying to And finally... Oesterholt is thrown a lifeline after her fall – but was she in on the whole thing? Pictures: Youtube lean on a bar (but that was for real...).

FitzPatrick ‘knew of bank’s law breach’ by ED cARTy THE former chairman of Anglo Irish Bank knew a €625million plan to unwind Sean Quinn’s secret shareholding was a flagrant breach of company law, a court has heard. The fraud trial of Sean FitzPatrick and two other executives entered its final stages with prosecution lawyers claiming the bankrupt banker was guilty because he had been privy to certain facts as a senior board member. On the direction of Judge Martin Nolan, FitzPatrick was earlier found not guilty of six charges relating to €170m of loans to members of the Quinn family. There was no evidence against him regarding those loans, the court heard. One of the other executives, Anglo’s former managing director of lending Pat Whelan, was found not guilty on seven separate charges of

FitzPatrick: ‘Privileged’ being privy to the fraudulent alteration of loan facility letters to seven individuals in October 2008. The trial, now in its tenth week, centres on whether the €625m of loans made by Anglo to buy shares were in the ordinary course of business. As the prosecution brought its case to a close, Paul O’Higgins, senior counsel, told the jury there is an obligation for company directors to ensure compliance with the

law and their job should be looked upon as a privilege. He said: ‘There has been considerable play made on behalf of Mr FitzPatrick that he was a non-executive director. He was. But he was more than a non-executive director. He was chairman of the company, which imposes and grants power, more than a non-executive director. ‘He is guilty because he knew certain facts while he was a director that he was in a position to put him in clear notice that this company was acting in flagrant breach of the Companies Act.’ The jury was told it was irrelevant whether the financial regulator knew about the deal. Mr O’Higgins told the jury they had to consider who authorised the lending and whether any of the three men had taken any steps to prevent it from going ahead. The hearing continues.

‘€5,000 cost of calorie menus’

IT WILL cost restaurants €5,000 a year if they are forced to put calorie information on their menus, it has been claimed. The Restaurants Association of Ireland made the claim after the launch of an optional online calorie calculator by the Food Safety Authority (FSAI). Health Minister James Reilly said it would help consumers ‘make the healthier choice, the easier choice, and to create an environment where everyone can play their part in improving the health and wellbeing of themselves and their families’. Dr Mary Flynn of the FSAI said: ‘When food and drinks are prepared outside the home, the consumer does not know what ingredients are used and how they are prepared.’ But the Restaurant Association of Ireland said it would take a chef 20 hours a month to complete a 40-item monthly menu, at a time cost of €5,000 a year. ‘At a time when restaurants are trying to create new jobs as well as saving existing ones, extra costs don’t need to be placed on them.’ it said.

Quinn company sale Ill Kerins to miss stops after threats PAC questioning A MAJOR construction company has pulled out of a deal to buy a business formerly owned by bankrupt tycoon Sean Quinn due to intimidation. Lagan Group had planned to take over Aventas Rooftiles, but has repeatedly suffered attacks on plant and property, as well as threats including a death threat to chairman Kevin Lagan on the day his wife died last week. Announcing its decision, the firm said ‘no business could operate when criminal threats put employees, directors and their families at risk’.

NEITHER outgoing Rehab chief executive Angela Kerins nor former CEO Frank Flannery will appear at today’s meeting of the Public Accounts Committee. Ms Kerins, who announced her resignation last week, cited poor health and said she would not be attending on medical advice. Mr Flannery, meanwhile, said that he was willing to attend the PAC and to ‘assist that important body with its enquiries’. However, he had to decline the invitation as he did not have any involvement in or knowledge of the items on the agenda since he retired in 2006.

Stab attack left victim with knife stuck in face Stately : Michael D Higgins and his wife Sabina, left, at City Hall in London yesterday, where he met the city’s mayor Boris Johnson, above picture: fennells

A MAN was left with a large knife stuck in his face after a horrendous stabbing attack. The victim was stabbed several times in a serious altercation at about 6.35pm on Parnell Street, Limerick, the day before Saint Patrick’s Day, it is alleged. The injured man was rushed to University Hospital Limerick, but later transferred to Galway University Hospital, where he had the knife removed from his face. Two men appeared in Limerick District Court yesterday charged in

connection with the attack. John Bardon, 26, of Catherine Street, Limerick, and Craig McMahon, 24, with an address at Parnell Street, Limerick City, were each charged with violent disorder. Both men – who made no reply to each charge – were granted free legal aid and appointed defence solicitors. Judge Eugene O’Kelly remanded both on bail to appear again in the court on June 18. Two other men who were arrested were released without charge.

President views colours of Irish regiments in Windsor ON THE second day of his State visit to the UK, President Michael D Higgins and his wife Sabina viewed the colours of the regiments of the British army that were disbanded when Ireland gained independence. The colours, which honour the service of Irish soldiers in World War I and other conflicts, were given pride of place in a stairway entrance to Windsor Palace on the insistence of King George V in 1922, so that all visitors could see them. The presidential couple looked over the colours of the Royal Irish

Regiment, the Royal Dublin Fusiliers, the Connaught Rangers, the Prince of Wales’ Leinster Regiment and the Royal Munster Fusiliers. There were 58,000 Irish soldiers in the British army at the start of World War One – ‘the Great War’. Mr Higgins also met British prime minister David Cameron and the Mayor of London Boris Johnson yesterday. Mr Cameron told Mr Higgins he was ‘privileged’ to be in office ‘at a time when Anglo-Irish relations are on such an up’.

Tory’s ‘shoot McGuinness’ comment is ‘a throwback’

GERRY ADAMS has accused a politician whose wife was left crippled by the IRA of publicly encouraging the assassination of Northern Ireland’s Deputy First Minister Martin McGuinness. Responding to the former UK Conservative Party chairman Norman Tebbit’s remarks, the Sinn Féin leader said it was unacceptable for a member of the House of Lords to openly support the shooting of a political leader. ‘I fully understand that Norman Tebbit has himself been a victim of the political conflict and I regret that he has suffered grievously,’ said Mr Adams. ‘However, to publicly advocate the assassination of Deputy First Minister Martin McGuinness is a shocking throwback to a violent past from which we are seeking to move on.’ Mr Adams said his party colleague and ex-IRA commander Mr McGuinness has worked tirelessly to ensure the success of the peace process at considerable risk to himself.

by bRiAn HuTTOn

‘Martin, his home and indeed his family have been targets for abuse and attack by so-called dissident republicans,’ he said. To now have this type of activity encouraged by a member of the British House of Lords is unacceptable.’ Outspoken Lord Tebbit, who was injured with his wife during the 1984 IRA bombing of the Tory conference in Brighton, said he hoped Mr McGuinness was shot in the back for attending a State banquet at the invitation of the Queen. Mr McGuinness told RTÉ he did not want to be ‘drawn into’ the row. Lord Tebbit said the Queen had no choice about Mr McGuinness attending the banquet at Windsor Castle in honour of the visit of President Michael D Higgins. He said: ‘There’s always the possibility that a member of the Real IRA will be so outraged by Mr McGuinness bowing to the Queen they might shoot him in the back. We can but hope.’

Cause of Peaches’ death still unknown after exam

by DANiEL BiNNs

JAMES Hellwig, better known as former pro-wrestler The Ultimate Warrior, has died aged 54. Hellwig (pictured), who died on Tuesday, was one of pro-wrestling’s biggest stars in the late 1980s, having beaten Hulk Hogan in a memorable match at Wrestlemania in 1990. He was in the spotlight again earlier this week, making appearances at the latest Wrestlemania and being inducted into the WWE Hall of Fame. He is survived by his wife Dana and his two daughters.

A POST-MORTEM examination of the body of of Peaches Geldof has proved inconclusive and toxicology tests will be carried out, say police. The 25-year-old’s body was found at her home in Wrotham, Kent, earlier this week. The circumstances around her death – which officers said was being treated as ‘non-suspicious, unexplained and sudden’ – are still being investigated. However, the results of a toxicology report could take several weeks, they warned. A spokesman added: ‘Officers continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding the death in order to compile a report for the coroner.’ Peaches was found dead on Monday afternoon after police were called to the scene following ‘a report of concern for the welfare of a woman’. The body of the mother-of-two was transferred to Darent Valley Hospital in Dartford for a post-mortem examination to take place. A coroner is expected to open an inquest following the results. Her father, Bob Geldof, led the tributes that flooded in this week, saying the family was ‘beyond pain’. Her husband, Tom Cohen, said his wife was ‘adored’ by him and sons Astala, 23 months, and Phaedra, 11 months.

THE team behind Game of Thrones have confirmed they will make at least two more series of the bloodthirsty fantasy show. The epic tale of treachery among a series of families vying for power in a medieval-style world is currently on its fourth series – shown on Sky Atlantic in Ireland. Michael Lombardo, president of US broadcaster HBO Programming (which makes the show) said it was ‘a phenomenon like no other’ and said the cast and crew ‘continue to surpass themselves’. The series – filmed on location around the world, including in the North – is based on the best-selling books by George RR Martin.

pistorius: I’m tormented by Reeva image by HAYDEn SMITH OSCAR Pistorius yesterday refused to look at a photograph of his girlfriend’s ‘exploded’ head as he was urged to ‘take responsibility’ for killing her. The South African athlete was shown the image of the injuries he inflicted on Reeva Steenkamp by prosecutor Gerrie Nel, who told him: ‘It’s time that you look at it.’ But he became distraught and protested: ‘I will not look at a picture when I’m tormented by what I saw and felt. ‘As I picked Reeva up, my fingers touched her head. I remember. I don’t have to look at a picture, I was there.’ Mr Nel asked the Paralympic champion to state in court that he had shot Miss Steenkamp dead – sharply challenging him when he replied by saying only ‘I made a mistake’. He then showed a video of Pistorius firing a gun at a watermelon while re-

marking that the fruit was ‘softer than brains’ and the .50-calibre firearm was a ‘zombie-stopper’. Mr Nel then asked Pistorius, 27: ‘You know the same happened to Pistorius: Denial Reeva’s head?’ The blade-runner – who denies murder and says he shot Miss Steenkamp, 29, after mistaking her for a burglar – began sobbing and broke down, forcing the judge to call a recess. Mr Nel also started to poke holes in details of Pistorius’s version of the events leading up to the killing on Valentine’s Day last year. The prosecution claims Pistorius was a gun-obsessed hothead who deliberately shot Miss Steenkamp dead after a row. The trial continues.

Knife student wounds 20 in school stabbing spree

Rampage: Franklin High School near Pittsburgh after 19 students and an adult were attacked

A TEENAGER armed with a knife wounded 19 students and a security guard yesterday as he went on a stabbing spree at a high school in the US state of Pennsylvania. A 16-year-old male student was arrested after the rampage and is being held in police custody. Some victims, ranging in age from 15 to 60, suffered serious stab injuries but all are expected to survive, doctors said. Mayhem broke out as students arrived for morning lessons at Franklin Regional High School in Murrysville, a suburb of Pittsburgh. One witness said he saw ‘students holding their stomachs, bleeding’. He wasn’t sure how the suspect was stopped but said at some point a fire alarm was activated. Speaking outside the school, Morris Hundley told reporters his 14-year-old daughter Morriah had called him from the scene in tears. ‘Words can’t describe how I feel. I’m

just thinking of the victims,’ said Mr Hundley. Westmoreland County emergency spokesman Dan Stevens said it was not immediately clear why the suspect attacked the students. Most of the victims were cut by the knife and some suffered scrapes as the assailant lashed out. Dr Chris Kaufman, trauma director at Forbes Regional Medical Center, said two victims were in surgery and one was awaiting surgery. All three were stabbed in the torso, abdomen, chest or back. Seven teenagers and one adult were listed in serious condition at Forbes Hospital. A ninth victim, a 15-year-old girl, was satisfactory at another hospital. Governor Tom Corbett issued a statement saying he was ‘shocked and saddened’ by the events. ‘As a parent and grandparent, I can think of nothing more distressing than senseless violence against children,’ he said.

Market bomb attack sees 23 die A BOMB attack on a fruit and vegetable market has killed at least 23 people and wounded up to 100 more, Pakistani officials said. The device exploded as shoppers were buying their morning supplies on the outskirts of Islamabad yesterday. ‘I saw body parts flying in the air,’ said fruit trader Afzal Khan. ‘People were dying, people were crying.’ Two hospitals were treating at least 90 victims, making it the deadliest attack in the capital for six years. Housing bubble, toil and trouble of market movements

H

aving watched some of Prime Time on Tuesday evening and listened to the discussion on housing problems, i have to say that it seems absurd that we are going towards another property bubble. How can there be a housing shortage in ireland? What has happened to the so-called ‘ghost estates’ around the country? What has happened to houses in nama? Have these houses been abruptly sold off without the knowledge of the irish people? i for one haven’t seen many ‘for sale’ signs for nama houses. Maybe they were sold to the rich and not for the general public. Let’s not forget the number of irish people who had to emigrate to find jobs in other countries or who have taken their own lives in this

country over the last number of years, all because of what the current and previous irish government has put us through. How come nothing is mentioned about the amount of so-called ‘affordable housing’ that could not be sold off that is now put on ‘social housing lists’? is the irish government trying to create another property bubble? GK ■ Ulysses, on the way to work this morning, i witnessed a woman driving a silver Focus on the wrong side of the road (Philipsburgh avenue) while putting make-up on. i hope she’s reading this. Detox your closet – and earn cash

pRING is the perfect time to clear out your closet and get rid of clothes that are taking up precious space. Giving your wardrobe a detox and banishing old clothes that haven’t left the hanger since they were bought will give you a chance to review what you have and to make better buying decisions in future. And if your bank balance means you can’t af-

ford to buy what you need for your spring/summer wardrobe, then convert your unwanted clothes into cash so you can invest in new ones you will actually wear. Research compiled by Asos found that its average customer has almost €1,000 worth of unworn clothes. The online retailer decided to launch Asos Marketplace in 2011 for people to sell their clothes in a place ‘where anyone, any-

where in the world, can sell fashion to anyone, anywhere in the world’. The website charges a 5 per cent commission on any sales made (some of which is donated to charity), but it is free to join and easily accessible through the marketplace app. There are lots of options available online for selling clothes, including websites such as eBay, Adverts.ie and DoneDeal.ie, all

of which are scoured by bargain hunters. And if you prefer a bit of human interaction you could also try the traditional car boot sale or flea markets where you can sell everything in one day. If you have clothes that have a designer label, then you want to get the best price for your pieces. “Changing your shopping habits can save money in the long run”

‘Ruby Ruby is a small shop so we focus exclusively on middle and high-end designers. Think Max Mara to Hermès. We do not accept any high street brands,’ says Barnes. ‘Items must be clean, in perfect condition or very lightly worn and reasonably recent.’

Items to be sold are accepted on Mondays, Tuesdays or Thursdays and are then kept on sale for eight weeks. Proceeds of sales are divided between the store and the person selling each item. Whether or not something sells has a huge amount to do with luck and whether the right person comes to the store at the right time: ‘Someone has to like an item, be the right size and believe the price is fair,’ adds Barnes. ‘Accessories are easier to sell as size and fit do not come into play. Beautiful top tier handbags such as Chanel are sold very quickly.’

nCE you’ve cashed in your clothes and made space in your wardrobe, you should put the money to good use and invest in quality essentials you will get to wear for seasons to come. Changing your shopping habits can save you money in the long run. ‘My number one rule is always purchase something that already goes with the clothing you have in your wardrobe. That way you’re continually adding to the natural flow of your own personal style,’ says stylist Róisín Flanagan. ‘Try everything on and don’t purchase something you just feel OK about because you will always only feel OK in it. Clothes are there to be enjoyed. Buy something you absolutely love that makes you feel a million quid.’ Being savvier about your wardrobe pieces will mean you have clothes that last. Flanagan says that you can look to getting seasonal additions to jazz up your wardrobe such as a statement bag or vintage earrings in cobalt blue that will make any outfit stand out. As for an essential item, Flanagan says there is one affordable classic that every wardrobe can benefit from: ‘You can never go wrong with a good crisp white shirt.’ Some high street stores have now

Boy captors were shaped by violence ‘I T was important for me to find a dignified voice,’ says Amanda Lindhout. ‘That was our goal when writing those dark, difficult, personal scenes about abuse and torture.’ Lindhout’s powerful, riveting memoir, A House In The Sky: A Memoir Of A Kidnapping That Changed Everything, is full of potential indignities. In the course of the 460 days she was held captive in war-torn Somalia, she was kept in squalid conditions, semi-starved, repeatedly raped and tortured. Yet she emerges from the story with grace. This is no misery memoir but a hopeful, inspiring page-turner that finds resilience and redemption in a terrible misadventure. One of the questions the book – co-written with American journalist Sara Corbett – sets out to explain is what the hell a 27-year-old Canadian, who had only eight months earlier been waitressing in Calgary, was doing in ‘the most dangerous place on Earth’? ‘I faced a lot of criticism, particularly in the Canadian media,’ admits Lindhout, 32. ‘A lot of it is justified. I hope I have written with some kind of self-awareness about my younger self.’ The seeds of Lindhout’s restlessness were sewn in a hardscrabble childhood. At nine, she and her brothers were living with their mother and her occasionally violent lover, at the wrong end of Sylvan Lake, Alberta. Her father, who had recently come out as gay, lived 15 minutes away. Even then, Lindhout’s focus was further afield:

Starved, raped, tortured... but Amanda Lindhout’s book of her kidnap ordeal is no misery memoir, writes Patricia Nicol she and her elder brother, Mark, would ‘dumpster dive’ for bottles they could exchange for a few coins, which she used to buy back issues of National Geographic. At 19, Lindhout moved to Calgary, found work as a waitress in a bar for high-rolling oil-workers and funded her first backpacking adventure to Venezuela. Over the next six years her tips would fund lone trips to ever more daring places. In Ethiopia, in late 2006, she fell in love with Nigel Brennan, an Australian photographer. The relationship foundered but his work inspired her to pursue journalism as a means of getting paid to travel. A stint as a rookie stringer in Afghanistan led to her naive acceptance of a Baghdad-based job as a television reporter for an Iranian press agency. Having found post-war Iraq an isolating challenge, only Lindhout would have concluded that lawless Somalia was the obvious next destination. When Brennan, who was now involved with someone else, got in touch, she suggested he came too. In August 2008, three days into a four-week trip, their vehicle was pulled over by Kalashnikov-armed kidnappers. Their families were asked for $3million (€2.2m) ransom – an unimaginable sum for Lindhout’s

Changed by captivity: Amanda Lindhout says her ordeal has made her a more thoughtful person

parents. In the book she writes that her mother worked a minimumwage job, and her father lived off disability payments under the strain of chronic ill-health.

D

ESpITE their cruelty to her, Lindhout speaks with compassion about the ‘soldier boys’ who kept them captive for 15 months. Her teenage guards were, like her, products of their upbringing, with little to show for life but a gun and a mobile phone – on which they would spend hours watching suicide bombers and jihadi training videos. ‘They were shaped by war and violence,’ she recalls. ‘Most of them hadn’t been to school but all spoke of a desire for an education.’ That their actions transgressed all acceptable codes of behaviour seemed beyond their ken. As she was released – with the help of a private security firm and a payment of about €800,000 for her and

How A fAileD escApe inspireD A cHAriTy A few months into their captivity, hostages Amanda Lindhout and Nigel Brennan tried to flee by burrowing beneath a crumbling window and sprinting to a mosque. When their angry captors pursued them shooting guns, the mosque-goers, who had at first seemed sympathetic, retreated frightened. But one brave middleaged Somali woman stood up to all the men, admonishing their cowardice and refusing to let go of Lindhout, even as the

kidnappers dragged their Western captives away. It was in part to honour that unknown woman that Lindhout founded the Global Enrichment Foundation (globalenrichment foundation.ca), a charity dedicated to educating Somali women. So far, it has helped more than 200,000 women in Somalia and in Kenyan refugee camps. At a camp outside Mogadishu, run by Dr Hawa Abdi – the female gynaecologist Lindhout was en

A year later, she was shocked to discover a Facebook message from one of the group’s leaders congratulating her ‘on all the good works I was doing for the sisters of Somalia’ (see box below). Early in their captivity, Lindhout and Brennan pretended to convert to Islam in the hope it would make them more difficult to kill. Studying the Koran, she says, gave her a deeper insight into her captors who believed they were living by the book, even in the way that they tortured her. ‘A lot of the worst stuff that happened isn’t in this book,’ says Lindhout. ‘We wanted to balance the moments of darkness with the very real moments of transcendence, of understanding. It’s a hard way to learn about the strength that we have inside ourselves but I had to go searching for that and I found it.’ Four years after her release, Lindhout cuts a glamorously feminine figure. ‘When I came out I

Though education is its primary aim, when there was famine in Somalia in 2011, GEF distributed more than 2million meals. Through this work, Lindhout has returned to Somalia five times since her ordeal, ‘though making quite different decisions’, she says. PN New start: Lindhout working in Somalia

didn’t know who I was any more and it took a while to make that reconnection with my femininity,’ she says. ‘But putting myself together is now something I enjoy even more.’ But she is more vulnerable than she looks. She will never eat normally again because of a damaged digestive system and she speaks to a psychologist most days to help with post-traumatic stress disorder. Having been close at points in their captivity and having thought they would be afterwards, she is now estranged from Brennan. ‘It’s complicated,’ she says. ‘We came out of that experience very different people. Our perspectives on what happened are very different. We just don’t have a lot in common.’ She feels unready for a partner, or the family she would like. ‘I’m just not there yet,’ she says. But in September she will go to university for the first time to study psychology. Before that there is a trip to Mongolia. She takes pride in the fact she still travels alone. Does she regret going to Somalia? ‘It’s not as black and white as that,’ Lindhout says. ‘Captivity changed me in many ways. Most of them for the better: I am a much more thoughtful and compassionate person than I was. But I would take back my family’s suffering in a heartbeat.’ Equally, ‘there is a closeness to my family that wasn’t there before’. physically too: today Lindhout lives ten doors away from her mother in Canmore, a small town in the Canadian Rockies. As she jokes drily: ‘She likes to keep me in her sights.’

Mccarthy: World cup is all about your fans by pADRAic MORgAn MICK MCCarthy made 57 appearaqnces for Ireland and later went on to manage the side for eight-and-a-half years, but as the World Cup approaches, the Ipswich town boss has been recalling his own experiences on the world stage and recognises the huge role the fans have played in the country’s journey. Italia 1990 was probably the most famous sojourn on to the world stage for Ireland, but McCarthy’s first taste of World Cup action was a little less successful - a Mexico 1986 qualifier against an impressive Denmark side. ‘We got beaten 3-0 and we were lucky to get nil!’ he says. ‘you could tell then that they were going to go on and have a decent World Cup. they had Michael Laudrup, Preben Elkjaer and Morten Olsen playing for them. they were fantastic, but it was a great experience.’ Italy in 1990 brought different emotions. Drawn against England, the Netherlands and Egypt, McCarthy and Co managed to get out of the group and what stands out for him, even still, is the support of the fans.

Former united player Forlan, who now plays for Cerezo Osaka in Japan, claims to be in regular contact with suarez (pictured), and said: ‘We spoke a few days ago. All i told him was to think about going to Manchester united. i know he loves Liverpool, the fans and the city, but i think the best thing for his career would be to move to Old Trafford.’

Hot tip: McIlroy is favourite to win the Masters two majors of 2011 when ranked 111th and 108th in the world respectively, the lowest ranked winner of a major has been Ernie Els, who was 40th when he won the 2012 Open at Lytham. Last year, Adam Scott was ranked seventh when he won the Masters, Rose fifth

McIlroy is rated the tournament favourite despite a best finish of 15th in five previous Masters appearances. ‘I certainly feel comfortable on the golf course here,’ the 24-year-old McIlroy said. ‘There’s a lot of guys that seems like once they drive up Magnolia Lane, something sort of lights up inside them. ‘I’m disappointed that my best finish was only 15th. ‘I feel like I’ve played better than that and haven’t quite got the results. ‘Hopefully I can change that this week.’

Tour milestone

Darren Clarke and David Lynn will have extra reasons to enjoy the 78th US Masters when it gets under way today. Former Open champion Clarke will become the first Northern Irishman to make 500 appearances on the European Tour, while Lynn will make his 400th. Clarke, the 25th player to reach such a milestone, was presented with an engraved silver ice bucket by Tour chief executive George O’Grady and said: ‘It seems like only yesterday I was setting out on this journey.’

Jose Mourinho praised his Chelsea players for embracing his high-risk strategy in Tuesday night’s Champions League quarter-final success over Paris saint-Germain. so determined was Mourinho to see his side into the semi-finals that he fielded all three of his much-maligned strikers at the same time as Chelsea chased the decisive goal. it came three minutes from time from Demba Ba, who became an unlikely hero in a season where he has found match action limited. Over and out: Moyes

MANCHESTER United blew a superb chance to knock out defending champions Bayern Munich last night in their Allianz Arena stronghold. Patrice Evra rifled the Red Devils into a shock lead against the run of play early in the second half to put David Moyes’ men ahead on aggregate and on the brink of a place in the semi-finals. But a combination of poor defending and woeful finishing let the Bundesliga champions off the hook and they soon wreaked a terrible revenge. Evra silenced the noisy home fans in the 57th minute when he ran on to a cross from Antonio Valencia to thunder an unstoppable left-foot drive into the top far corner from 20 yards. But United’s joy lasted little more than a minute with the French left-back caught napping as Mario Mandzukic met Franck Ribery’s deep cross with a diving header. United should have swiftly restored their advantage when Wayne Rooney found himself free 16 yards out, only to scuff Danny Welbeck’s pass horribly wide. It proved to be an expensive miss as Thomas Muller smartly turned in Arjen Robben’s centre from close range in the 67th minute after United failed to deal with the danger. And it was all over bar the considerable shouting from the jubilant Bavarians when Robben cut his way in from the right to unleash a deflected left-foot shot which found the bottom corner.
