anglo jury is still out as FitzPatrick cleared THE former chairman of the defunct Anglo Irish Bank was yesterday cleared of all fraud charges over a loans-forshares scheme months before the bank collapsed in January 2009. Sean FitzPatrick, 65, from Greystones, Co Wicklow, denied providing unlawful financial assistance to a select group of clients to buy shares in the bank in July 2008 as the stock value tanked. The jury will resume deliberations on two other directors, Pat Whelan, 51, of Malahide, Co Dublin, and William McAteer, 63, of Rathgar, Dublin over the provision of €619million of loans for a group of investors dubbed the Maple 10 and the family of bankrupt former industrialist Sean Quinn. The deal was allegedly concocted to unwind a secret stock market punt by Mr Quinn who borrowed hundreds of millions from Anglo to cover losses on the doomed investment. Twelve jurors returned the majority verdict in the landmark trial at Dublin Circuit Criminal Court – the first prosecution connected to the collapse of Anglo, regarded as the bank that brought Ireland’s economy to its knees. Mr FitzPatrick shook hands with his legal team in the courtroom after his acquittal on ten counts. In a statement outside the court, Mr FitzPatrick thanked his family, friends, legal team and the jury.
by ed carTy
‘First of all I would like to thank my wife, my two sons and my daughter, and my sisters who have supported me not only during this trial but for the past six years of great personal difficulties,’ Mr FitzPatrick said. ‘I would like also especially to thank the women and men of the jury who have found me not guilty of all charges.’ He added: ‘To all my friends who have stood by me in particular two very special friends, I will always be truly grateful for their support during this very difficult time. ‘I now simply ask that the courtesy extended to me and my family during the trial by the media be maintained and the privacy of my family which has been intruded on over the past six years will now cease.’ The former bank chairman, regarded as having built Anglo over 30 years to become the fastest-growing bank in Europe during Ireland’s much-vaunted Celtic Tiger period, had originally been charged with 16 counts of fraud. He showed little emotion when the verdicts were delivered. He winked at family members in the courtroom and shook hands with Mr McAteer and Mr Whelan before walking from court holding his daughter’s hand. The jury will return today to deliberate on the full 16 charges against Mr McAteer and Mr Whelan.

Cabinet fails to agree on exact water charge rates
by jOAnnE AHERn
HOUSEHOLDERS still don’t know how much they can expect to pay in water charges after a Cabinet meeting on the issue ended without agreement yesterday. The Labour coalition partners are said to be unhappy that Environment Minister Phil Hogan issued a plan for pricing without warning them. Tánaiste Eamon Gilmore said yesterday: ‘There are issues that have to be addressed before a decision is made. And they include issues around ability to pay, issues around what happens in the case of households that will be metered because clearly metering will not be completed until the end of the year.’ Taoiseach Enda Kenny suggested in the Dáil householders are facing an average water charge of €60 per quarter, with an annual standing charge of less than €50. Mr Kenny reacted angrily when he was taken to task by Fianna Fáil leader Micheál Martin, who said he kept trying to leak information to ‘soften the blow’. In response, Mr Kenny called him the leader of a party of ‘opportunistic hypocrites’ and pointed to a Fianna Fáil plan to introduce water charges in 2012, with an average fee of €400 per year.
Battle of Clontarf mark II: Irish Rail vs. TD IRISH Rail has rejected a call to postpone maintenance works on the northside Dart line on Sunday to facilitate the Battle of Clontarf commemorations. Local TD Sean Kenny made the call, saying he was ‘astonished’ Irish Rail was ‘effectively reducing public transport options for people’ over the Easter weekend. However, an Irish Rail spokeswoman said Sunday’s works are ‘essential for the maintenance of the railway’. She added: ‘We [undertook] these works at a time that will cause minimal disruption to commuters.’ As part of the festival to mark the anniversary of the Battle of Clontarf, St Anne’s Park in Raheny will be turned into a Viking village. See www.brianborumillennium.ie.
Dog owners told to keep chocs away PEOPLE are being urged to keep their Easter treats out of reach of their pets after research revealed thousands of animals are fed chocolate by their owners. Chocolate contains theobromine, which is toxic to many animals and can prove fatal if eaten. High-quality dark chocolate poses the biggest risk to dogs, with a small bar containing more than enough theobromine to fatally poison a small dog such as a Yorkshire terrier.

IRELAND has been warned to brace itself for a summer washout, after forecasters dashed hopes of a repeat of last year’s heatwave. The meteorologists who correctly forecast the previous four seasons’ weather have predicted a dismal summer, which is likely to be ‘colder and wetter’ than average. James Madden, meteorologist with Exacta Weather, said people should enjoy the sunshine now as his team’s long-range forecast showed a ‘mixed pattern of weather’, punctuated by just a handful of warm spells.

known area of the ancient city, but it also shows that the Tiber bisected Ostia, rather than defining its northern side. The presence of the warehouses along the northern bank of the river provides us with further evidence for the commercial activities that took place there in the first two centuries.’ The team also found evidence for at least four major buildings.

At least six people were confirmed dead, including a female crew member and two male secondary school students, and 55 injured. Korean TV stations broadcast live pictures of the Sewol, listing to its side a few kilometres from Byeongpung Island, and sinking as passengers jumped into the water or were winched up by helicopters. Temple Bar in ‘top ten tourist let-down’ list by jOAnnE AHERn THE TEMPLE Bar Company has hit back at an online article that cites the city centre tourist spot as one of the ‘ten most disappointing destinations in the world’. Dublin’s so-called cultural and creative quarter was listed as one of the ten most disappointing tourist locations by the Huffington Post, alongside Niagara Falls (the US side), Hollywood, Walt Disney World in Florida and Las Vegas. Article author Caroline Morse said: ‘The city of Dublin is great. There’s a castle and gorgeous architecture, there are renowned colleges and green spaces, and there are many other things to see and do that go beyond the tired “Irish culture equals pubs” stereotype.’ However, she described the Temple Bar area as ‘a prime example of the rampant fleecing of drunken tourists that should be avoided at all costs’.
Temple Bar: ‘Tourists fleeced’ She added: ‘This small area caters to visitors competing to see how drunk they can get in “authentic” bars and nightclubs (aka overpriced tourist traps). Avoid it at all costs and seek out a pub anywhere else in Dublin.’ The Temple Bar Company, whose mission is ‘to protect and develop the area’ described the piece as a ‘one-dimensional personal opinion’. Managing director Martin Harte said Temple Bar was ‘unrivalled as a destination’, adding that research indicated ‘significant repeat business and visitors express[ing] the desire to return again’.

The clean-up was led by fans of local soccer team Bohemians based in nearby Phibsboro
50 jobs lost at Examiner GP plan ‘unachievable’ SOME 50 jobs are to go at the Irish Examiner Group, its parent company Landmark Media Investments announced yesterday. The firm said the redundancies are a result of ‘investment in new editorial production, advertising and financing systems’. The number of jobs lost represents ten per cent of the group’s staff, whose publications include the Irish Examiner and the Evening Echo, as well as regional titles.
THE Irish Medical Organisation has said it is ‘contemptuous’ of the Government’s plan to approve legislation introducing free GP services for under-sixes without first having detailed discussions with it on the implications. Speaking after the measure was approved by the Cabinet yesterday, chairman of the GP committee of the IMO, Dr Ray Walley, said the target to have the scheme in place by the summer is ‘unachievable’.

Buyers may be needing a hand to purchase securely by NicOLE LE MARiE
UNCLAWFUL ENTRY: A three-year-old US boy had to be rescued from an arcade ‘claw’ machine after he sneaked in to get a stuffed toy. Kael Ireland vanished from his mother’s home in Nebraska on Monday and toddled off to a bowling alley opposite the house to try his luck on the claw crane machine. Instead of putting in a coin and moving the crane to try to win a stuffed toy, however, the lad sneaked inside the machine and ended up stuck among all the toys. His frantic mum called police, who were already responding to calls of a boy stuck in the machine – and the pair were reunited as soon as the machine was opened up and the lad was released.
AN EXPENSIVE shopping trip need not cost an arm and a leg – soon we could be paying with our veins. A payment system has been developed that scans a shopper’s hand and then reads the unique pattern in their blood vessels. Quixter was invented by Fredrik Leifland, who insists the method is safer than credit cards. ‘Every individual’s vein pattern is completely unique, so there really is no way of committing fraud with this system,’ he said. ‘You always need your hand scanned for a payment to go through.’ Some 1,600 volunteers have signed up to try the system in the Swedish city of Lund, where scanning terminals have been installed in 15 outlets. Mr Leifland devised the idea two years ago while waiting in a queue. The technology existed before but had not been used to make payments. ‘We had to connect all the players ourselves, which was quite complex – the veinscanning terminals, the banks, the stores and the customers,’ added Mr Leifland. To sign up, users scan their palm three times and enter their social security and telephone numbers. A text message is sent to their mobile phone with an activation link to a website, with payments taken directly from customers’ bank accounts.
Facelift face-off
BEAUTICIANS who used treatments billed as ‘vegetarian-friendly’ are being sued after they were found to contain the blood of unborn calves. Clinicians are fighting a court ruling labelling them ‘responsible’ for ‘misrepresentations’ regarding Isolagen – a non-surgical ‘facelift’ product – even though they did not make the serum. They want the UK’s Court of Appeal to overturn a judgment that ruled 20 clients could sue beauty therapists for up to £3,500 (€4,255) each. The treatments were bought between 2003 and 2006. Isolagen, which made the serum, went out of business in 2007. The appeal court judges have reserved their ruling until a later date.
Tube driver was ‘drunk at controls’ A LONDON tube driver was yesterday accused of drinking almost a bottle of vodka while at the controls of a train. Ian Comfort smelled ‘strongly of alcohol’ when his Jubilee Line train stopped at Queensbury station in March, Hendon magistrates’ heard. A ‘near empty’ bottle of vodka was found in his bag, it was alleged. Comfort, 50, who has been a driver for London Underground for about 12 years, appeared in court to face two charges of being drunk in charge of a train. He was released on bail until April 28 and is currently suspended from duty.

Russia ‘exporting terror to start a new Cold War’
Father ‘proud’ of his daughter, 12, giving birth

FURIOUS Ukraine prime minister Arseniy Yatsenyuk yesterday accused Russia of attempting to build a ‘new Berlin wall’. He accused Moscow of orchestrating the unrest in the region by ‘exporting terrorism’. ‘We have now realised our Russian neighbours decided to build the Berlin Wall and want to begin a new Cold War – but before that they are performing acts of “hot” terror,’ he claimed. His comments are likely to raise tensions ahead of crucial talks between diplomats from the warring countries, the EU and the US due to be held today. Nato yesterday announced plans to bolster its presence in eastern Europe in response to the crisis in Ukraine. The alliance’s secretary general, Anders Fogh Rasmussen, promised ‘more planes in the air, more ships on the water, and more readiness on the land’ to reassure eastern European Nato members concerned about Russia’s intentions. Mr Rasmussen said Moscow must make clear ‘it doesn’t support the violent Rising tension: Ukrainian soldiers sit on their armoured vehicle in Kramatorsk, Ukraine, where prro-Russian actions of well-armed militias or pro- protestors blocked a column of their vehicles en route to Slaviansk and did not allow them to pass. Pro-Russian Russian separatists’ in eastern Ukraine. insurgents, demanding broader autonomy from Kiev, continued occupying government buildings
THE father of Britain’s youngest mother yesterday said that he was ‘proud’ of his daughter and there was ‘no shame’ in her giving birth at the age of 12. Speaking on a radio phone-in, the man called his daughter’s 13-year-old boyfriend a ‘great kid,’ rubbishing rumours the pair wanted to marry after their baby girl was born on Sunday. He also hit back at claims he and the boys’ parents ‘allowed’ the underage sex to go on, saying: ‘Unfortunately, kids this age are going to grow up to have boyfriends and partners or whatever. ‘If they do things behind their parents’ back, that’s something we’re never going to be able to find out.’ The father denied claims the youngsters were ‘scrounging off the social’, saying he would support them. However, Hilary Pannack, of charity Straight Talking, said: ‘We need to stop the cycle of teenage parents having children who are more likely to become teenage parents themselves.’

Unique supertruck is millionaire inventor’s labour of love for his four-year-old girl

FATHERS will do just about anything to put a smile on the face of their little girl. But inventor and ex-Disney engineer Bran Ferren, 61, has taken that to a whole new level – building a multi-million dollar custom-made truck for his daughter, aged four. Named after the apple of his eye, Kira, the Kiravan is a home-from-home on wheels. It boasts a penthouse suite, state-of-the-art kitchen and office, has a pop-up tent on the roof and drones to check the terrain ahead to make every journey as safe as possible. It can travel 3,200km between fuel stops and Mr Ferren, co-founder of renowned tech firm Applied Minds, built it to travel across the US with his daughter.

The PonoMusic online audio store and portable player will cost €290. Street artist is arrested over Boston bomb hoax
A PERFORMANCE artist who left two backpacks near the Boston Marathon finish line is facing up to 25 years in jail after his hoax. Kevin Edson was last night charged with possession or use of a hoax device and making a false bomb threat after creating the scare hours after a tribute to those who died in last year’s bombing at the event. The 25-year-old, who has a history of mental health issues, was seen wandering barefoot in the middle of the street, wearing blue and yellow face-painted tears and a black veil while shouting ‘Boston strong’. He was stopped by police, reportedly telling them he had a rice cooker in his backpack – mimicking the 2013 attack blamed on brothers Tamerlan and Dzokhar Tsarnaev. Officers then cordoned off the area, conducting a controlled explosion on the bags. Edson, a student at the Massachusetts College of Art and Design in Boston,

was said to have been off his medication for months. His brother, TJ, posted on Facebook: ‘What he did at the finish line earlier today is absurd and shameful. It should not be considered art or condoned in any way. ‘Do not play into that. He is a sick person with multiple diagnoses. Unfortunately, no consequences of his abnormal behaviour were dire enough for him to shape up before he thought something like this could get him that fame he always chased. ‘Ultimately, he is a disillusioned and very sick individual.’ Suffolk County district attorney Dan Conley called Edson’s actions ‘irresponsible, senseless, and selfish’ during a day of remembrance for the three dead from last year’s bombing. Edson was sent to hospital for psychiatric evaluation and is due back in court on May 7.

It’ll be a right Battle getting out to Clontarf re-staging
I
wouldn’t be one for having a gripe with Irish Rail because I have to stand on a carriage but I was in shock on tuesday to read they are closing the dart line on the northside over Easter weekend. How it got past them that the Battle of Clontarf Festival is being re-staged in St Anne’s Park this weekend is bizarre. the event is being planned by dublin City Council, with an expected turnout of 40,000 people and road restrictions in place. Surely the dart is the best way to travel as Harmonstown and Killester Stations are a short walk to the gates of the park? do State agencies not talk when it comes to planning major events? Seriously, your idiocy astounds me. ‘Tarf 2014 ■ Real tree Hugger (Mailbox, wed), there’s no need to weigh-up the pros and cons of wind farms any more – our friends from across the pond have abandoned the idea. what happens next will be interesting – some €15billion in public and private
funds had been earmarked for this project. I’d like to see that cash build some turbines out in the ocean. RK ■ Freedom of Speech (Mailbox, wed), should we also deny adoptive rights to infertile, straight couples? Perhaps my parents should hand my brother back – it was clearly never Mother nature’s ‘intention’ that I have him as my big brother. You’re entitled to an opinion, but you’re not allowed to dictate how others live. Incidentally, gay people are not devoid of reproductive plumbing, and plenty choose to have children naturally. Might I also add that with your blind ignorance and overbearing intolerance, what a ringing endorsement of a conventional upbringing you truly are. Freedom from Discrimination ■ Freedom of Speech, if you are such a fan of laws of nature, you must be against contraception, organ transplants, pets and so on. or do you only make an exception for adoption rights of gay people? YOUR EASTER wEEkEnD with daragh reddin
A comic house of cads An iDEAL HUSbAnD HHHII
OSCAR Wilde’s extraordinarily prescient 1895 comedy hones in on such subjects as insider dealing, blackmail and the corrosive effects of corruption among political bigwigs. As such, it feel, at times, like a precursor to House Of Cards – with added bon mots and a considerably less brooding atmosphere. Sir Robert Chiltern (Garrett Lombard) is under-secretary for foreign affairs and a respected public figure whose blemish-free CV is a source of much pride to his adoring, idealistic wife Gertrude (Lorna Quinn). But when the conniving Mrs Cheveley (a delightfully muah-ha-ha Aoibheann O’Hara) fetches up in London and confronts Chiltern with a damning secret, the later’s reputation, career and marriage are left hanging in the balance. Wilde’s characters are always at their most entertaining when issuing sparkling, devil-may-care aphorisms or thumbing their noses at social mores. It’s no surprise then that the loudest applause on opening night is reserved for Marty Rea who puts in a brilliantly manic turn as ostensibly self-involved dandy Lord Goring (‘to love oneself is the beginning of a lifelong romance’). With little more than an admirably pragmatic outlook and an unlimited bank of pithy observations, it’s Goring who single-handedly steers Chiltern clear of scandal. Although Lombard and Quinn put in fine perform-
ances, their characters are so prim and insipid it’s difficult to muster much sympathy for their predicament, much less the outcome. While Wilde’s play doesn’t always convince in combining razor-sharp epigrams with shameless melodrama, director Ethan Mcsweeny mines the text for its comic potential and, in ably exploring the ways in which the Victorian world shies away from its own reflection, he also holds a mirror up to our own. THE bIg RELEAsE
the AmAziNG spider-mAN 2 (12A) HHHII
Given The Amazing Spider-Man put the ‘meh’ into ‘A-meh-zing’, this playful sequel is a set piece-packed improvement. Andrew Garfield leaps lithely into the iconic blue and red pyjamas as Peter Parker, mild-mannered nerd turned webslinging vigilante following a genetically enhanced spider bite. Always the most relatable of Marvel’s superheroes, Peter grapples with everyday teen angst, such as being there for his girlfriend Gwen Stacy (Emma Stone) and arguing with his Aunt May (Sally Field) about dirty laundry. Then there’s those less familiar problems, such as busting a plutonium heist and saving New York from meltdown via new electricity-powered baddie Electro (Jamie Foxx as a giant growly blue battery). If you’ve seen Sam Raimi’s Spider-Man 2 (and it was released only ten years ago) you’ll get a sense of giddy déjà vu at the 3D-justifying scenes of Spidey pinging gaily between skyscrapers like a sticky human pinball. And there’s a lot more crowd-pleasing, smash-’em-up action too: a grand-scale scene of devastation in Times Square is particularly spectacular. Otherwise, this falls into the super-sequel trap of
Locke (15A) HHHHI Tom Hardy drives a car down a motorway for 90 minutes – while making some hands-free calls. Not exactly a ‘wow’ pitch. Yet this oneman movie is a compelling one. When conscientious construction manager Ivan Locke (Hardy – aka Bane from The Dark Knight Rises) gets into his car after a long shift, he has a job, a wife (Ruth Wilson – voice only) and a happy family (voiced by Bill Milner and Tom
Holland). One choice and one phone call will change all that. You might expect Locke to be a Speed-style thriller, particularly as it’s from the director of recent Jason Statham-vehicle Hummingbird. Instead, it’s a pared down, hightension, life-journey drama, driven, literally and otherwise, by Hardy, whose modest and masterful performance is marred only by his regrettably unfanciable beard. LI-Z
Magic Magic (15A) HHHII Juno Temple offers a heart-stopping turn as a naive young American unravelling dramatically on her first trip abroad in Chilean director Sebastián Silva’s creepy drama. She’s Alicia, joining her cousin Sara (Emily Browning) for a trip to Chilean Patagonia – gorgeously shot by Christopher Doyle. But
vERDIcT This grab-bag sequel is further proof that this is a franchise reboot too soon. A colourful pick’n’mix of treats with a few duff choices. too many underdeveloped villains and script-tinkerers, yet not enough plot to web its 142 minutes tightly together. What sticks your eyeballs to the screen is the acting. Garfield’s chemistry with reallife girlfriend Stone is enough to get his mum shopping for wedding hats. And the scenes with Garfield and Dane DeHaan, who plays Peter’s childhood chum, Harry Sara heads back to Santiago, claiming she has to resit an exam, leaving Alicia with a motley crew of her friends, who show the disorientated girl varying levels of hostility. Most insidiously mean is Brink (Michael Cera), a fellow American whose barbed comments, wilful selfishness and exclusionary use of Spanish soon start sending an increasingly sleep-deprived Alicia over the edge. Cera – his relationship with Silva already cemented through trippy road movie Crystal Fairy & The Magic Cactus – gives an unsettlingly calibrated against-type performance. But the plaudits rest with Temple, whose anguished, white-faced panic carries her over plot weaknesses through sheer force of will. siobhan Murphy
We Are The Best! (15A) HHHHI Film of the week is this irresistible coming-ofager about three 13-year-old girls forming a pint-sized punk band in 1980s Sweden. All baggy, borrowed-from-dad jumpers, self-cut mohawks and stripy leggings, their first anthem attempt is Hate The Sport, a protest song against PE lessons, that includes lyrics such as: ‘The world is a morgue/But you’re watching Björn Borg’. However, issues such as nuclear power, boys, the existence of God and
Familiarity usually breeds contempt in electronic music and there is a long list of artists who have rushed out a large volume of work before fading into obscurity. Dutch producer Danny Wolfers is one of the few artists who seems to be exempt from this rule. Working primarily as Legowelt, he releases with almost unparalleled frequency, but his blend of Chicago jack, Italo melodies and old-school electro never grows tired. The latest Legowelt album, Crystal Cult 2080, sees him explore the sounds and textures of rave music without losing sight of his distinctive sound. Get down to Grand Social this weekend to witness a modern Dutch master in action. Sun, Subject, The Grand Social, Liffey Street D1, 11pm, €10 to €15

parental embarrassment loom equally large in their tweenage world. It’s a return to form for director Lukas Moodysson (Show Me Love, Together) who here tenderly adapts his wife’s graphic novel. A joyful blast of anarchy and innocence, it could be cutesy but never is thanks to the non-primped performances from Mira Barkhammar, Mira Grosin and Liv LeMoyne. This has the feel-good factor of Anvil! meets The Goonies. See it. LI-Z
The Love Punch (12A) HHIII Emma Thompson is so obscured by her sunglasses on this movie’s poster that you barely recognise her – perhaps she’s hiding her face in shame. Actually, she’s the saving grace of a cringeworthy Franglais romcom/ heist caper that casts her as an empty-nester who teams up with her ex-hubby (a stiff Pierce Brosnan) to seek revenge on the French corporate raider who’s stolen their pension by pinching his diamond. It’s hard to tell what’s more painful: the repeat jokes about prostates, Brosnan’s Bogart impersonation or his eyebrow-waggling request for Thompson to ‘rub Deep Heat into my coccyx’. Still, if you are a middle-aged person who likes comfy slacks and mildly amusing sitcoms, you’re in for a ball. I found the ending cheery – mainly because I got to leave. LI-Z
Part of the Mr Saturday Night crew, Anthony Naples also provided the New York party with its first release, 2012’s Mad Disrespect, when it set up a label. Galcher Lustwerk
Last year, a mixtape surfaced on the Blowing up the Workshop blog entitled 100% Galcher. It was the work of Galcher Lustwerk, who so far had only put out one EP on the White Material label. The tape’s fusion of textured deep house and bizarre spoken word quickly gained a cult following, which has seen the US producer tour Europe. If you’re looking for soulful grooves this weekend, Lustwerk’s Irish debut is a good option. Sun, The Bernard Shaw, South Richmond Street D2, 6pm, free.

Far out isn’t Far enough: the tomi ungerer story RTÉ1, 10.45PM Reclusive and provocative, illustrator Tomi Ungerer has an air of enigma about him from the get-go. The Alsatian has called Ireland home since 1976 but this award-winning documentary is our first real chance to get to know the man behind some 140 published works, ranging from children’s fables to overheated, bizarre erotica. US director Brad Bernstein works the lens as ungerer relays his childhood growing up in WWII and the effects it had on his art, politics and uncompromising temperament.
Are you beginning to miss the taut conspiratorial movements of Homeland or Channel 4’s Hostages? If so, you could do a lot worse than this smart and tense US drama. The pitch? A busload of pupils are kidnapped from a Washington school that presides over the children of many powerful political figures. Panic ensues and FBI and CIA forces are faced with solving the puzzle. Gillian Anderson (pictured) is among a sterling cast that includes Dermot Mulroney and Rachel Taylor.

ate Moss’s latest collection is like a greatest hits album – that we can wear. after a three-year hiatus, the supermodel’s topshop comback seems to have been inspired by her most recognisable fashion moments over the past 25 years. Walking into the design studio she’s secretly been working in since last June is like entering a time capsule. a lemon one-shouldered dress is the first thing to catch my eye. It’s the latest incarnation of the infamous vintage dress Moss wore at another Magazine party in New York in 2003. another rail holds a black off-theshoulder dress with feathers across the top. ‘Coty’s 100th anniversary celebration in 2004?’ I ask the PR team. ‘Yes.’ ‘those sequin and star embellished pieces. Her 30th birthday party at the Dorchester?’ ‘Yep...’ that’s the thing with Moss. as transient as fashion is, she continues to define the style of a generation. When she stepped out in that yellow dress, we all wanted in. Where Moss goes, we follow.
The new Kate Moss Collection takes us on a journey of the supermodel’s most famous fashion moments, writes Naomi Mdudu It’s something she was clearly aware of when designing the new range, which taps into many of her signature looks. the day offering features the type of pieces we often see her wearing while holidaying on a yacht somewhere exotic. Smock dresses come in heavyweight cottons decorated with intricate aztec embroidery. Moss has always been a sucker for Western and fringing. Over the years it’s become her staple Glastonbury get-up and it appears in the collection on a pair of suede runner shorts with plait details on the seams.. a whole section of the collection is dedicated to loungewear, inspired by Moss’s preoccupation with wearing underwear as outerwear. think wide-leg pyjama sets with floral prints and – for the less daring a black slouchy overcoat in a bold paisley print.
DRESS FOR LADIES DAY SUCCESS Heading to Fairyhouse this weekend for the Carton House Most Stylish Lady comp? Then you’ll want to check out judge Brendan Courtney’s tips for the All That Glitters Is Gold-themed contest. 1. April can be chilly, so plan ahead – you may need to wear something warm. A gorgeous coat is perfect but be sure to choose one that adds glamour to your outfit. Adding a belt is a great way to freshen up a look and could be a clever way to incorporate this year’s theme.
2. When it comes to Ladies Day events it’s important to remember you will have to conform to a degree, but it’s how you apply your own personal style that will make a lady stand out. The obvious way to do this is with accessories or a hat. Don’t be afraid to wear something different – you don’t have to limit your wardrobe to skirts and dresses. 3. Less is always more. When it comes to incorporating the theme, I recommend subtle touches. Outfits with accents of gold here and there will be the winners.

He most striking pieces are for evening. On one side she’s focussed on tailoring, offering two killer tuxedos, one in black and another in gold; and on the other Moss has gone for full-blown glamour with slinky maxi dresses inspired by the midnight blue one Michelle Pfeiffer wore in Scar Face and a multi-tiered beaded dress and jacket, made from 17million beads. Upping the luxury element of this collection was a priority, according to topshop’s creative director emma Farrow. It’s an audacious move; celebrity and high street collaborations aren’t known for their quality.
4. If you do choose an attention-grabbing headpiece or hat, keep the rest of your outfit simple and sophisticated. Race wear is formal but understated. If you opt not to wear a hat or headpiece, make sure your hair is styled. Hair and make-up are accessories too so it’s important they work as well as your jewellery. 5. Finally, remember that to really look the part, be true to your own style. You need to feel comfortable and confident in what you are wearing. Fellow judge Rosanna Davison and I will be looking for that winning lady, one who feels as beautiful as she looks. Visit CartonHouse.com for further details on the competition.
Paisley print pyjama coat €160 But Moss’s collection could change everything. the fabrics are head and shoulders above what’s available on the high street; the silk scarves in the collection feel far more expensive than their €50 price tag; and many of the eveningwear pieces wouldn’t be out of place on the runway. When news of topshop’s partnership with Moss was first announced in 2007, it raised eyebrows. Yes, she’s a supermodel but since when did that make her a designer? Reports that her approach to designing was to rejig
pieces in her wardrobe added to the controversy. But that is exactly where the strength of her collections lie. Women will pay to recreate Moss moments at prices that won’t break the bank. Besides, designer she may not be but her natural affinity for pulling outfits together is something that cannot be taught. You may not be able to name check the designers behind her most famous looks, but you certainly remember the woman wearing them. The Kate Moss Collection will be in Topshop stores from April 30. A selection will also be sold by Net-A-Porter.

CONNOR WICKHAM dealt Manchester City’s Premier League title hopes a severe blow and kept alive bottom-side Sunderland’s faint survival chances. After taking a second-minute lead through Fernandinho a lacklustre City looked too content to coast through the remainder of the match, and their complacency was punished by a late Wickham brace before Samir Nasri earned City a barely deserved point. Gus Poyet’s strugglers got off to a terrible start when Fernandinho fired City ahead after being slipped in by a cute Sergio Aguero pass. Pressure: City boss Pellegrini Borini dragged wide from an angle. Wickham, though, converted Emanuele Giaccherini’s cross in the 73rd minute before the 21-year-old fired the visitors in front ten minutes later from the edge of the box. There was heartache for Sunderland when keeper Vito Mannone let a Nasri shot slip through his grasp and into the net with two minutes left. Nasri blazed over from six yards out at the death but despite this slip-up, City’s game in hand and the April 27 clash between the Reds and secondplaced Chelsea gives them some hope of staying in the race. Sunderland, who are six points shy of safety, still look certain for the drop, with another nail in the coffin likely to come at Chelsea on Saturday.

It took just four minutes of the second half for Palace to go further ahead, though, as Scott Dann was left free to head in a Bolasie corner. Substitute Steven Naismith prodded Everton back into the game on the hour but Jerome restored the two-goal lead after being set up by Puncheon. Kevin Mirallas made Palace sweat with a late second goal for the home side but they held on for a fourth win in a row.

Number of players suffering cruciate injuries is just madness, says Kilkenny
Coincidence: Kilkenny says it is weird how so many players suffered the same injury in the same month PicturE: iNPho
Dublin football star Ciaran Kilkenny has described the spate of serious knee injuries suffered by top Gaa players over spring as ‘March madness’, writes Paul Keane. the all-ireland medallist suffered season-ending cruciate knee ligament damage during Dublin’s allianz league win over Kildare at Croke Park. Meath forward Eamon Wallace, Cork’s Ruairi Deane and Mayo man Cathal Carolan suffered the same injury in march while Kerry icon Colm Cooper and Dublin defender Kevin o’brien were struck down just weeks earlier. Centre-forward Kilkenny is remaining positive but admitted it
will be difficult watching his u-21 colleagues take on Cavan without him in the all-ireland semi-finals tomorrow. and the Castleknock youngster admitted he’s at a loss to explain why the spike in knee injuries has occurred. ‘it was weird, it was March madness with all the cruciate injuries,’ said Kilkenny. ‘You had tony Grey from Waterford doing it recently too. it was a bit mad, i just can’t explain the amount of people doing it. it’s very weird, all happening at the same time. You’d never wish it on anyone.’ Kilkenny revealed that he’s forged a close alliance with fellow
cruciate victim Cooper – just months after helping Dublin defeat the ‘Gooch’s’ Kerry in a classic all-ireland semi-final tie. ‘We’re obviously going through the same kind of rehab and we’re getting the same kind of questions from people, walking around the street,’ continued Kilkenny. ‘So it’s great to talk to him and share our experiences that we’ve had so far and how we’re going to deal with it. We’ll be bouncing off each other, slagging each other, saying we’re in a relationship for the next six months.’
