Eczema ‘may cut skin cancer risk’ ECZEMA sufferers may have less chance of developing skin cancer, new research suggests. Experts found the immune response triggered by the skin condition could stop tumours forming by shedding potentially cancerous cells. Genetically engineered mice lacking three skin proteins – known as ‘knock-out’ mice – were used to replicate some of the skin defects found in eczema sufferers. Researchers compared the effects of two cancer-causing chemicals with normal mice and found the number of benign tumours per mouse was six times lower in knock-out mice. Both types of mice were equally susceptible to getting cancer-causing mutations, researchers said, but an exaggerated inflammatory reaction in knock-out mice led to enhanced shedding of potentially cancerous cells from the skin. Previous studies have suggested eczema is linked with a reduced risk of skin cancer
by DaviD MErcEr
but it has been difficult to prove because symptoms vary and drugs used to treat the condition might also influence cancer. The new study, published in eLife, is the first to show that allergy caused by eczema could actually protect against skin cancer, researchers said. Professor Fiona Watt, director of the centre for stem cells and regenerative medicine at King’s College London, said: ‘We are excited by our findings as they establish a clear link between cancer susceptibility and an allergic skin condition in our experimental model. They also support the view that modifying the immune system is an important strategy in treating cancer. ‘I hope our study provides some small consolation to eczema sufferers – that this uncomfortable skin condition may actually be beneficial in some circumstances.’ Skin cancer accounts for one in three cancers globally, according to the WHO.

THOUSANDS of young Jedi apprentices stormed the RDS at the weekend to meet some of the stars and characters of Star Wars. In its fourth year, Invasion Dublin descended on the city with dozens of volunteers dressing up in extravagant costumes teaching children and their parents how to use lightsabers in the event of a Sith attack. Familiar faces graced the exhibition halls, which were transformed into elaborate set-pieces for the three-day event. Stormtroopers, bulky and wielding blasters, stood hip to shoulder with mini Darth Mauls, Vaders, Luke Skywalkers and Princess Leias. ‘My face feels a bit stuffy, but it’s not too hot,’ said Victoria Johns from Belfast, a costumed volunteer. Her detailed, full-faced Sand People outfit saw her posing for photographs with fans every couple of seconds. ‘I made a good part of it [her costume], there are some bits that were a bit beyond my ability,’ Johns laughed, ‘I got a bit of help with it.’ Impressive ensembles included the

Manifesto in Arabic to appeal to Muslims
A LOCAL election candidate is hoping to attract the Muslim vote by translating his election literature into Arabic and Urdu. Jason O’Callaghan is running for Fine Gael in the CrumlinKimmage area, where the Mosque on South Circular Road is located. The former gossip columnist, who plays Frank Sinatra in the Irish Rat Pack tribute band, is also holding voter registration
events outside the Mosque and said he is ‘very encouraged’ by the response. He said: ‘Many people within this community have experienced oppressed political regimes and are very encouraged by the Irish democratic system. ‘They are keen to engage with their local politicians, so I felt the most effective way would be to have my literature translated.’ Mr O’Callaghan’s literature is
also available in Polish. Meanwhile, former MEP Patricia McKenna has lodged a complaint with the Broadcasting Authority of Ireland about RTÉ News’s coverage of a recent Red C opinion poll on the Dublin constituency for the elections. She claims the broadcaster tried to ‘influence voter opinion’ by ‘excluding’ People Before Profit candidate Bríd Smith and Translations: O’Callaghan Socialist MEP Paul Murphy.

A SON of IRA murder victim Jean McConville has said Gerry Adams threatened him with a ‘backlash’ if he released the names of those he believed were responsible. Michael McConville has said his family’s fight for justice will go on after the Sinn Féin president was freed, but has maintained he could be shot if he disclosed the identities of suspects to police. Mr Adams, 65, was released from Antrim police station pending a report being sent to prosecutors, after four days of questioning about the 1972 killing of the mother-of-ten and other alleged IRA links. Mr McConville told BBC Radio 4’s Today programme: ‘Gerry Adams says to me, “Michael, you are getting a letter of support from the republican people”. He says, “if you release the names, I hope you are ready for the backlash”. I took it as a threat.’ Mr Adams has vehemently rejected allegations made by former republican colleagues that he ordered the abduc-
‘Peace is possible alongside justice’ THE father of a victim of the Omagh bombing has said it is possible to have peace with justice. Michael Gallagher, whose son Aidan died in the 1998 Real IRA bombing of Omagh, said every sane person in Ireland and Britain wanted an end to violence but not at any price. Gerry Adams’ arrest has exposed the divisions which still exist between some in Northern Ireland’s nationalist and unionist communities. Mr Gallagher favours a mix of prosecutions and some form of truth recovery in cases where trials are unrealistic. He said: ‘Peace is getting stronger and I am very happy about that. Every sane person in Ireland and Britain wants peace but that has to be built upon a firm foundation and we cannot forget the people who have paid the ultimate sacrifice, the victims. Any possibility to prosecute should be taken but in some cases we have to recognise that prosecutions will not be a reality.’

Right: Michael McConville claims Mr Adams threatened him with a ‘backlash’ if he named those he thought were responsible picture: pa

The decision whether to charge him with any offence will be made by the Public Prosecution Service after reviewing evidence presented by police. Mr McConville alleged the ‘threat’ was made around the time a report, being drawn up by Northern Ireland’s then police ombudsman, Nuala O’Loan, into claims his mother was an informer, was close to being finalised. The Sinn Féin president had brokered a series of meetings between him and members of the IRA. Mr McConville said he used to tell Mr Adams what had happened in the meetings and warned he would release the names of those involved if Ms O’Loan’s report was disputed. At that point he said the backlash was mentioned. Mr McConville said that ‘could’ have meant a backlash against the peace process, but said he took it to
mean the ‘backlash from republican people’. Meanwhile, Helen McKendry, Mrs McConville’s daughter, told Channel 4 News the family was ‘listening to legal advice’. She added: ‘I want the people who dragged my mother from her home, tortured her, killed her, buried her, I want them brought in a court of law. That’s all I want for my mother, justice.’ At a European election rally last night, Mr Adams claimed his arrest was a sham. He said the family of Mrs McConville have the right to seek justice, but he claimed he was looking to the future. Sinn Féin is holding a European election rally in Dublin today, as Mr Adams resumes the canvassing activities he claims his detention was designed to thwart. The rapturous welcome he received in a west Belfast hotel on his first public appearance was in marked contrast to the angry scenes outside the police station as loyalists protested at the decision to free him and disorder in the loyalist Sandy Row area of Belfast, with petrol bombs and stones thrown, though no one was injured. The TD for Co Louth criticised the police’s handling of his arrest, but moved to dispel any suggestion that Sinn Féin’s commitment to policing had wavered after Stormont deputy first minister Martin McGuinness said during his detention that SF would be reviewing its support for the PSNI.

60 seconds 53% of male drivers Actor HugH DAncy, 38, stars in the TV series Hannibal and is married to Homeland’s Claire Danes. He talks here about juggling fatherhood with his career
Hannibal is filmed in Toronto – how did you manage there for six months during one of the coldest winters on record?
It was incredibly cold. When the Canadians are complaining that it’s cold, you know it’s bad. I did feel like moving to Mexico – that seemed a much better option for quite a while. At least we weren’t having to pretend it was midsummer in the show or anything but you are restricted in terms of dressing for the weather: there’s not a lot of acting you can do in a balaclava.
Your character is banged up in Season Two. Was it difficult to play all those jail scenes? There aren’t too many props to rely on in prison… Yes, it’s actually quite techni-
by Hannibal, who he really had been befriended by – which shows terrible taste in friends but there you go. And the more he tries to persuade people he’s been set up, the more they turn away from him – and out of that comes this much harder determination to take matters into his own hands.
Has becoming a father to Cyrus [now one] affected your career choices? Yes, it
meant that in the break between the first and second year of Hannibal, I didn’t work on anything else. I didn’t need anything else and I didn’t look at anything else; that was a conscious choice. One of the benefits of being locked into a TV show is that you don’t have to – but I didn’t do this because I wanted to sit idle for six months of the year. I am sure, going forward, there will be other, less voluntary breaks.

admit to tailgating
by AiLEEn DOnEgAn SOME 79 per cent of Irish motorists have experienced tailgating in the last year, a survey has found – and men are the most likely culprits. The poll of 1,000 drivers, carried out by toll tag provider easytrip, found 53 per cent of men admitted driving too close to the car in front, compared with 24 per cent of women. They did so because the car in front was ‘driving too slowly’. Some 38 per cent of drivers who were tailgated said they pull over or change lanes to let drivers pass and 27 per cent of motorists said they use their brake lights to tell drivers to back off. Easytrip general manager, Ciara O’Brien said: ‘Two seconds is the recommended distance between you and the car in front while four
Tailgating: ‘Pretty stupid’ seconds is recommended in wet conditions and it was shocking to see that only 30 per cent of those surveyed got this right.’ The survey also revealed 42 per cent of drivers use aggressive tactics like flashing lights and beeping to get other road users to move aside, while seven per cent of men admitted to using intimidating hand
gestures to claim right of way. More than 82 per cent of those polled said they would be in favour of adopting the indicator custom used on German Autobahns in Ireland. In Germany, a motorist approaching a vehicle in the fast lane indicates right to request the vehicle in front to move out of their way, allowing them to pass. Conor Faughnan of the AA described tailgating as ‘pretty stupid driving’. He said that it has been a problem on the WestLink toll bridge, with motorists mistakenly thinking they can evade the toll by driving very close to the car in front. He advised drivers being tailgated to stay calm. ‘Let him pass you by safely. At the first opportunity to get out of his way, get out of his way,’ he said.
59% use social media at work
IF you use social media at work, you’re not alone. A new report from law firm William Fry has revealed 59 per cent of employees in Ireland access their social media accounts in work, spending an average of 39 minutes during the work day. Surveying 500 employees in firms with more than 50 people, the report found that 58 per cent of employers don’t have a social media policy in place. According to the findings, 40 per cent of employees have workrelated contacts on their personal social media accounts, such as LinkedIn, but 95 per cent of employers have not discussed ownership of these contacts with employees. This may become a problem if the employee leaves the company, taking business with them. William Fry’s Catherine O’Flynn said: ‘Litigation in this area is increasing and employers need to be best placed to protect their assets, their brand and their reputation from potential damage.’

Torn apart Pistorius ‘carried Reeva’s body downstairs and asked God to save her’
He begged her to stay alive
OSCAR PISTORIUS was ‘torn apart’ and desperately trying to save his girlfriend after shooting her, one of his neighbours said in court yesterday. The athlete was inconsolable as he carried Reeva Steenkamp’s body down the stairs, Johan Stander told the jury. He was the first person on the scene after the gunshots were fired and spoke of his certainty that the Olympian did not intend to kill her. ‘His commitment to save the young lady’s life... how he begged her to stay alive. I saw the truth that morning,’ an emotional Mr Stander added.
Do not feel duped, I am going to die
by DANIEL BINNS
The manager, who lived in the same complex as Pistorius, was called moments after the shooting early on Valentine’s Day last year. He said: ‘[Pistorius] said on the call: “Johan, please, please come to my house. Please. I shot Reeva. I thought she was an intruder. Come quick.”’ Describing the scene when he turned up with his daughter, Mr Stander said: ‘He asked God to help. He was torn apart, broken, desperate, pleading.’ His testimony came on the first day
of the trial after a two-week break. Pistorius’s defence is insistent that the 27-year-old shot Miss Steenkamp in error through a toilet door. The prosecution claims he is lying and his story is designed to cover up that he shot the model intentionally in the middle of an argument. Mr Stander rejected accusations he was only giving evidence because of his friendship with Pistorius. ‘I’m here to give the truth,’ he told the judge in South Africa. ‘It’s not something I would like to experience again.’ The trial continues.

capsize near Greece forgives her captor AT LEAST 22 people, including four children, were killed when a yacht and a dinghy trying to enter Greece capsized yesterday in the eastern Aegean Sea. The vessels had been trying to enter Greece illegally when they overturned off the coast of the island of Samos near the Turkish coast. This was the third fatal migrant boat disaster this year. The Greek coastguard said 36 people – 32 men, three women and a child –were rescued and two of them – a man and a child - were airlifted to hospital. The survivors were identified as 23 Somalis, nine Syrians and three Eritreans. Survivors said 60 to 65 people had been on the 30ft yacht and the 6ft dinghy that had set off from Turkey.
ONE of the three women held captive for nearly a decade in a Cleveland house before escaping last year has said she forgives the man who kidnapped and tortured her. Michelle Knight, interviewed on NBC’s Today show, said Ariel Castro deserves forgiveness because she’d want to be forgiven if she did wrong, adding: ‘That’s the way of life.’ Today is the anniversary of the escape from the house by Knight, Amanda Berry and Gina DeJesus. Knight – whose book is out today – said she has just recorded a song, and is training to be a boxer. Castro, 53, pleaded guilty in August and committed suicide in prison.

Smarting over killing of native, protected pine marten
T
he recent revelation that the National Parks and Wildlife Service (NPWS) issued a licence for the killing of a rare and protected pine marten exposes an act of cultural vandalism. The licence was granted earlier this year under Section 42 of the Wildlife Act to ‘control protected wild animals causing serious damage’. The damage which merited a death sentence? ‘Urinating/defecating or other damage to stock,’ the NPWS Licensing Unit stated in response to an enquiry from an animal welfare organisation. Given that the pine marten is Ireland’s rarest native mammal, urinating/defecating are natural behaviours which the animal cannot avoid and non-lethal options are available (eg making the location impenetrable to wildlife), surely it would have been an act of logical thinking to refuse this application. With a state body permitting the murder of a pine marten and the expressed homi-
cidal desire by Ireland’s shooting lobby to remove this animal from the protected animals list so that it can be shot for looking sideways at a game bird, Irish society is in danger of losing this animal from the countryside for the most banal of reasons. No one should attach the epithet of vermin to a pine marten, one of our rarest and beautiful wild animals. Wildlife is well versed in balancing the relationship between the species. It is the arrogance of man that believes that somehow he can tame and control nature that has a negative impact on the very same workings of nature. Supermarkets are, we learn, places where the cashiers are mean and the stock is eccentric, while true buckwheat galettes – made without eggs in the batter – present a challenge. Lebovitz writes mainly for his home crowd in the US, so the measurements are in cups first, then weights, and the peculiarities of the French way of eating are described in terms of their difference to the american way.

ingREDiEnTS Serves 4 to 6 135g, plus 3 tablespoons Dijon mustard ♦ 1/4 teaspoon sweet or smoked paprika ♦ Freshly ground black pepper ♦ 3/4 teaspoon sea salt or kosher salt ♦ 4 chicken thighs and 4 legs (8 pieces, total) ♦ 100g diced smoked thick-cut bacon ♦ 1 small onion, peeled and finely diced ♦ 1 teaspoon fresh thyme leaves, or 1/2 teaspoon dried ♦ 250ml white wine ♦ 1 tablespoon whole mustard seeds or grainy mustard ♦ 2 to 3 tablespoons crème fraîche ♦ Warm water (optional) ♦ Chopped fresh flat-leaf parsley or chives, for garnish

few generous grinds of the peppermill, and the salt. Toss the chicken pieces in the mustard mixture, lifting the skin and rubbing some of it underneath.
Step 2: Heat a wide pan with a lid over a medium-high heat and add
the bacon. Cook the bacon, stirring frequently, until it’s cooked through and just starting to brown. Remove the bacon from the pan and drain on paper towels. Leave about 1 tablespoon of bacon fat in the pan, discarding the rest. Add the onion and cook for about 5 minutes, until soft and translucent. Stir in the thyme, and let cook for another few minutes, and then scrape the cooked onion into a bowl. Add a little bit of olive oil to the pan, if necessary, and place the chicken pieces in the pan in a single layer. (If they don’t all fit, cook them in two batches.) Cook over medium-high heat, browning them well on one side, then flip them over and brown them on the other side. It’s important to get the chicken nicely coloured as the colouring—as well as the darkened bits on the bottom of the pan, called the fond—will give the finished sauce its delicious flavour.
Step 3: Remove the chicken pieces and put them in the bowl with the onions. Add the wine to the hot pan, scraping the darkened bits off the bottom with a sturdy flat utensil. Return the chicken pieces to the pan along with the bacon and onions. Cover and cook over low to medium heat, turning the chicken in the sauce a few times during cooking, until the chicken is cooked through (about 15 minutes). Check if it is done by sticking a knife into the meat next to the thigh bone; if it’s red, continue cooking for a few more minutes. Step 4: Remove the pot from the heat and stir in the 3 tablespoons of Dijon mustard, the mustard seeds, and the crème fraîche. If the sauce has reduced and is quite thick, you can thin it with a little warm water. Sprinkle chopped parsley over the top and serve.

If you prefer filter coffee, we highly recommend the Chemex for clean, bright, nuanced coffee and it is great for sharing.
What other no-nonsense kit should every coffee lover own? A good quality hand grinder and an inexpensive digital scales.
If you were doing a coffeethemed tour of Europe, what would your three major pit stops be? Copenhagen,
Stockholm and London… but I’d also like to stop off in Oslo, if there was time.

A love letter to indie games THE Big RELEAsE
Child of light (7) XboX 360/XboX one/PS3/PS4/ Wii U/PC HHHH✩
Y
ou wouldn’t guess by looking at it but Child of Light is from the same people who made firstperson shooters Rainbow Six: Vegas and Far Cry 3. In fact, ubisoft Montreal has described it as its dream project, a chance to escape from a world of violence and create a love letter to Japanese-style role-players and indie games. There’s plenty here that’s original, including a story that starts in 19thcentury Austria. A princess called Aurora wakes up in the mythical world of Lemuria, where she finds that the sun, moon and stars have been stolen by the evil Black Queen – implied to be her stepmother back in the real world. At this point, the game’s other main influence – children’s story books – becomes clear. The painted backdrops and watercoloured portraits are gorgeous, and the soundtrack perfectly complements the ethereal beauty. The game takes the form of a 2D platformer but battles are fought using a turn-based system similar to that found in the early Final Fantasy titles. Child of Light also enables a second player to join – they can help snatch up health refills and further delay enemies. What doesn’t work quite as well is the characterupgrade system, which is so bloated with trivial options, you end up not caring. The difficulty level is also pretty low, while everyone speaks in rhyming verse, which adds little to the otherwise compelling storytelling and will annoy many. It may not be perfect but Child of Light is a genuine attempt to try something different, perhaps in terms of what the mainstream audience and the developers themselves are used to rather than gaming as a whole. Technically the biggest game this week is the tie-in for The Amazing spider-Man 2 (360/PS3/Wii U/XO/ PS4/PC/3DS, above). Movie games are usually terrible but, with a very different storyline to the film and a competent developer on board, this could be worth a look. Mario golf: World Tour (3DS) is one of the best Nintendo sports titles for years and strikes a perfect balance between simulation and arcade-style fun. A slightly undernourished single-player option lets it down a little but it does have a robust online mode. Nintendo’s portable is also treated to Etrian Odyssey Untold: The Millennium girl (3DS), a remake of the first entry in the cult role-playing series which adds improved visuals. With three difficulty levels from the start, it’s perfect for newcomers. DJ

REViEW Sony Xperia Z1 Compact Sony has done something amazing with the Xperia Z1 Compact. A mini version of the popular high-end Xperia Z1 handset, Sony has managed to create a more affordable handset without compromising on user experience or quality. I went straight from the original Sony Xperia Z to the newer Compact version so I was already familiar with Sony’s Android customisation, and there was nothing I missed from the fullsized version to the mini. At 4.3in, the sharp, vivid screen in the compact is smaller than the standard 5in of its Z1 counterpart. I’m more of a data user than a talker so the screen is very important. I didn’t find the smaller screen a compromise though and I appreciated the better battery life. Email, messaging, internet, Sat Nav, Spotify, camera and video are my mobile mainstays and I found that most days when it came to bed time I had a good 40 per cent battery left. With a 2.2 GHZ quadcore Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 processor and 2GB RAM (16GB internal storage), the Sony Xperia Z1 Compact is fast and handled anything I threw at it. There are also various battery
extension settings, including Stamina Mode, which only updates apps when the screen is on. For example, a typical 22-hour battery life for me was extended to 1 day and 17 hours (3 days and 6 hours in standby) in Stamina Mode. The 20.7MP camera in this phone produces excellent quality pics, even in low light. The video quality is also very good and the lightweight unit means it’s not too tiring to hold for extended recording and its size means it fits comfortably in your hand. Like its bigger counterpart, the Sony Xperia X1 is also waterproof, with all the ports, bar the waterproof headphone jack, hidden in sealed compartments. Sound quality from the speaker, which runs along the bottom of the handset, is good, but as ever, is greatly improved with some decent headphones. There are multiple pros for this phone and very few cons – the screen is a bit of a fingerprint magnet, also, I’d use a screen protector as it scratches easily. Overall, I really rate the Sony Xperia X1 Compact. It’s a smart, stylish, well specced device. Joanne Ahern Pre-pay €459.99 or from €19 with operators.

Tonight’s documentary, Fire In The Blood, narrated by Oscar-winning actor William Hurt, tells the story of how a group of people fought against Western pharmaceutical companies and governments which had blocked access to low-cost Aids drugs for the countries of Africa and the global south in the late 1990s and early 2000s. Shot on four continents and including contributions from Bill Clinton, Desmond Tutu and Joseph Stiglitz and former Pfizer executive-turnedwhistleblower Dr Peter Rost, this remarkable story of struggle reveals how millions of lives were saved as a result.

He clinched it with an exceptional clearance of the colours, holding his nerve as though it was he who had won this title five times in the past.

Giggs should be given the job full-time. There are rumours Van Gaal could be at Old Trafford for tonight’s game before joining up with his Holland squad for their first World Cup training camp. Former United skipper Robson reckons the 62-yearold must include Giggs next season, as well as the Welshman’s fellow ‘Class of ’92’ graduates Paul Scholes and Nicky Butt. ‘It would be

FWa chairman andy Dunn said: ‘tireless endeavour allied to extraordinary imagination makes an irresistible combination. add ingenious, impudent finishing and you have a footballer who truly quickens the pulse. Luis is a remarkably gifted addition to the long and distinguished list of winners of our award.’
Wayne Rooney will miss Manchester United’s final home game of the season with Hull tonight as he is still struggling to overcome a groin injury. Interim player-manager Ryan Giggs revealed Rooney, who sat out Saturday’s 1-0 defeat to Sunderland with a combination of the injury and a stomach bug, is still not ready to return, although he will be fit for the World Cup. ‘Wayne is probably struggling for the game,’ said Giggs. ‘He has not quite recovered.’ Robin van Persie could make his first start for seven weeks having fully recovered from a knee injury.

Toure glad to be cautious as City brace themselves for title run-in
YAYA TOURE has handed Manchester City a major title boost by declaring himself fit for their final two Premier League games of the season. Despite being substituted during the second half of Saturday’s 3-2 win at Everton, Toure said there was no flare-up of the muscle injury he suffered against Liverpool in mid-April. The Ivory Coast internation-
al’s early departure at Goodison Park was precautionary to ensure he would be in the best shape to face Aston Villa tomorrow and West Ham on Sunday. He said: ‘It was important I came off. It has been difficult for me in a short space of time to recover from the injury I picked up at Liverpool and prepare physically. If you are not fully prepared it is very
tough, because you have to be 100 per cent for these games.’ Despite facing two sides that have secured safety, Toure believes City will have to be at their best to win both matches and secure the title. ‘Villa and West Ham will come to just enjoy the games but we have a league to play for,’ he said. ‘We need to be at our optimum levels.’

The Reds led 3-0 and were on their way towards victory when the Eagles swooped for the unlikeliest of points. They still return to the top of the table but left Selhurst Park knowing Manchester City are just a point behind with a game in hand and a superior goal difference. Palace’s fightback started with 11 minutes remaining as a deflected shot from Damien Delaney flew beyond Reds goalkeeper Simon Mignolet. Substitute Gayle then piled on the
Bayern could allow Muller to take Van ride to Old Trafford THOMAS MULLER looks set to be reunited with his former boss Louis van Gaal if, as expected, the Dutchman is named as Manchester United manager. The 24-year-old striker, a product of Bayern Munich’s youth system, was a fixture in their first team when Dutchman Van Gaal was in charge of the German giants from 2009 to 2011. However, Muller has cut an unhappy figure during Pep Guardiola’s first season and said he was ‘certainly not happy’ at being on the bench for their Champions League semi-final, first leg at Real Madrid a few weeks ago. Bayern had repeatedly claimed they had no intention of letting the likes of Muller, Mario Goetze or Javi Martinez leave last season’s treble winners but chairman Karl-Heinz Rummenigge has now said: ‘If a player does not feel well at Bayern Munich he needs to come to my office. We must then talk about it.’ Bayern midfielder Toni Kroos has also been linked with a move to United.
Dancing Diop hurt by monkey chants LEVANTE’S Papakouli Diop has complained of racist abuse from Atletico Madrid fans. TV footage showed supporters making monkey gestures at the end of Levante’s 2-0 win in Valencia and Senegal midfielder Diop (pictured) responded by dancing in front of them, sparking a brawl between players from the two sides. ‘I went to take a corner and some of the Atletico fans started making monkey chants,’ he said. ‘To defuse the situation I started dancing but I didn’t insult anyone. I don’t know if you can call it racism but these monkey chants have to stop.’

pressure by sweeping home after a flowing counter-attack before lifting the roof by tucking away the equaliser with just two minutes remaining. It was a result which left Liverpool striker Luis Suarez, who was under the weather after being given tablets before the game so he could play, in tears at the final whistle. Joe Allen had headed Liverpool ahead in the 18th minute, when he met a Steven Gerrard corner at the far post after Mamadou Sakho missed a similar opportunity early on. Daniel Sturridge and Suarez then scored within a couple of minutes in the opening stages of the second half and Liverpool appeared to be on their way to an important victory. Palace ruined the party, however, with their remarkable finish.

AN extra 2,000 officers have been recruited to help police Rio de Janeiro, which will host several matches during next month’s World Cup in Brazil. Police and drug gangs have engaged in exchanges of gunfire in so-called ‘pacified’ slums in recent months. ‘We’ve really perceived an increase in crimes, we’ve seen a gradual increase since the second half of last year,’ said Rio state security head Jose Beltrame.

Taste of Italy: Riders take on the ‘The Big Italian Bike Ride’ and cycle the Giro Stage 2 route along Antrim’s Coastline.
AheAd of the Giro d’Italia, the second biggest cycling race in the world which rolls out of Belfast this friday, dublin rider Stephen Roche who won the triple Crown (Giro d’Italia, tour de france, World Road Championship) in 1987, talks to Metro herald about the Italian race coming to the island of Ireland for three days, from May 9 to11, writes Liam Costello. Roche who was inducted into the Giro d’Italia hall of fame this year said: ‘the Grand Partenza (big start) being held outside of it’s original country should not affect the modern-day rider. ‘It’s something that is tolerated now. Years ago cyclists didn’t like being moved around too much. But nowadays the modern cyclist will head down to the likes of Australia for pre-season training, he goes to China, Malaysia, he goes everywhere. ‘Riders these days are used to travelling. once the time zone has not changed too much, they can settle down to race quite easily. ‘the Grand tours are not just watched
by their natural heritage, but by the World of Cycling. ‘Its great that the Grand tours share themselves with the world within reason, certainly europe. the tour de france will leave from Yorkshire later this year. ‘At the end of the tour, no doubt some riders may say its 200km too long, but you can’t look at a particular stage and say that doesn’t count. there are over 3000 km to race in the Giro. ‘the miles battled in Belfast and from Armagh to dublin will be there in the legs at the end of the day. this will be a very competitive race. on the starting line you have 200 riders close to the Maglia Rosa (leader’s pink jersey). As the tour goes along, there is only a handful that can get it. It’s every rider’s dream to put on this tunic. once you get down to the first week, that number whittles down to a possible 50 riders capable of putting it on for one day. ‘to say you won a stage in the Giro d’Italia, is itself, something.’
