Hope militants will swap kidnapped girls
by daniel binns
A VIDEO has been released which shows dozens of the girls who were abducted in Nigeria – bringing new hope they are still alive. The undated clip shows the calm teenagers sitting in a rural clearing, wearing hijabs and singing songs. Boko Haram, the group of Islamic extremists behind the mass kidnap, has said it would be willing to free the girls in exchange for prisoners. Its leader, Abubakar Shekau, said: ‘It is five years since you arrested our brothers and they are still in your prisons. You are doing many things to them. And now, you are talking about these girls. ‘We will never release them until after you release our brethren.’ The footage was released by the militants yesterday – four weeks after the group abducted nearly 300 girls from a secondary school in the north-eastern village of Chibok. In the 17-minute video, the 100 or so girls appear unharmed. But two nervous-looking youngsters were shown being quizzed by a man off camera. They tell him they have converted from Christianity to Islam. Earlier this month, Shekau had threatened to sell the girls ‘in the market’ – sparking fears they may be forced into marriage, slavery or prostitution. But this video could lead to negotiations beginning with Boko Haram, which translates in English as ‘western education is forbidden’.
Video: Boko Haram leader Abubakar Shekau speaks at an unknown location during footage of some of the missing girls singing and praying Britain and the US have already sent counter-terrorism experts to provide advice and support in the hunt. It is not clear why only half of the missing girls feature in the video, prompting speculation they have
been split into smaller groups in an attempt to avoid detection. There are no clues as to when the footage was shot. The families’ spokesman, Pogu Bitrus, said: ‘There’s an atmosphere
of hope – hope that these girls are alive, whether they have been forced to convert to Islam or not.’ An international summit to discuss security in the region is set to take place in Paris on Saturday.

Criticism of rent allowance filter is Daft, says website by jOAnnE AHERn
ACCOMMODATION website Daft.ie has insisted it has kept a button on its site allowing landlords to indicate that they will not accept rent allowance because of demand from renters. Dublin Labour TD Aodhán Ó Riordáin, who criticised the move, said he was disappointed with the decision and said he wants the company to explain itself before the Oireachtas Social Protection Committee. He added: ‘It is becoming increasingly difficult for people to find suitable accommodation in the rental market and adding additional barriers for social welfare recipients is causing low-income families unnecessary distress. ‘In my view Daft.ie are encouraging landlords to discriminate against social welfare recipients and need to be taken to task for their actions.’ However, a spokesman for Daft.ie said that after being contacted by the Department of Social Protection, it agreed to remove the filter as a trial to see if it had any impact. He said Daft.ie reinstated it after getting feedback from people receiving rent supplement, who complained that removing the filter made it harder for them to find accommodation as they had to contact the landlord before be-

A PROPOSAL to cut funding for housing in Dublin was last night rejected at a Dublin City Council meeting. Despite some 20,000 applicants on the Dublin City housing list, the Government had planned to reduce funding by almost 50 per cent in 2015 and 2016, meaning that just 35 new homes would be built over the next three years. Councillor Mary FitzPatrick of Fianna Fáil tabled a motion to reverse the plan and instead increase funding, with the decision to scrap the initial cut agreed. ing told they were not eligible. He added that the problem is the lack of supply in the market and ‘hiding a button is not going to solve that’. A spokesman for the Department of Social Protection said it had contacted Daft.ie to remove the filter ‘in response to concerns from some agencies in the housing and homelessness sectors’. EIGHT derelict sites in the inner city area are owned by Dublin City Council, a Green Party local election candidate has said. Ciaran Cuffe found the details as part of an information request on Environment Regulations. The sites include locations along Aungier Street, Smithfield Terrace and Church Street. One site on Henrietta Street lies within a designated architectural conservation area which identifies areas of special character and architectural interest. Mr Cuffe said: ‘Dublin City Council should get its house in order, and if they can’t come up with uses for these sites, they should put them on the market.’ He added: ‘Many of the sites could provide affordable homes.’ A spokesperson for Dublin City Council said the matter is being reviewed and declined to comment further.
Man who abused child avoids jail users, he said the department would continue to work with the site to ‘encourage landlords to accept tenants who are receiving Rent Supplement’. Some 29,000 Dubliners are in receipt of rent supplement, which provides short-term support to people in the private rented sector who can’t pay full rent. Approximately 77,000 people na-
tionwide benefit from the scheme, which cost the Government €344million this year. The Department of Social Protection also contacted MyHome.ie on the matter. A spokesman for the site said its filter was a landlord facility and it was removed because fewer than 20 per cent used it.
Abuse watchdog: Religious orders slow to act A CATHOLIC Church watchdog has hit out at some religious orders in Ireland for being slow to enforce child protection measures. In the latest series of investigations launched after numerous paedophile scandals, it was found some priests evaded new protocols – despite admitting to abusing children. Teresa Devlin, chief executive of the National Board for Safeguarding

Children in the Catholic Church in Ireland, commended church dioceses for improving protection but warned about a lack of progress in orders. ‘There has been a sea change in that all are now conscious of their obligations around reporting, [but] unfortunately in two cases we saw that priests continued in ministry even though admissions were made and in another order cases against deceased brothers,
former brothers and lay teachers were not always notified to the Gardaí,’ she said. The latest reviews focused on the Archdiocese of Dublin, the Dioceses of Meath, Cloyne and Killaloe as well as the religious congregations the Presentation Brothers, the Patrician Brothers, the Benedictines, the Missionary Society of St Columban and the Society of the Divine Word.

A LIMERICK man who repeatedly sexually abused a child 21 years ago has avoided jail. The accused, who cannot be named, was given a three-year suspended sentence at the Central Criminal Court. Counsel for the accused said he is now married and living in America and any conviction could prevent him returning. Mr Justice Paul Carney yesterday said he refused to ‘massage’ the sentence in such as way as to deceive the US authorities. He ordered the man to enter a bond of €1,000 and keep away from the victim. He also declared the man a registered sex offender. The 37-year-old man pleaded guilty to attempted rape in the summer of 1993. His victim was between six and seven years old at the time. The judge said the accused was not likely to re-offend.

Trump will pump €45m into golf links
No jail for man who hit friend in literary row
by ED cARTy
US TYCOON Donald Trump has said he will invest up to €45million in a storm-ravaged golf course he bought in the west of Ireland. The property mogul, who is currently on a three-day visit to inspect the Doonbeg links in Co Clare, said he would redevelop the dunes in an environmentally sensitive way amid concerns for a microscopic snail. Mr Trump said he would double or triple his initial €15million investment in Doonbeg – secured earlier this year at a knockdown price after financial trouble and severe erosion saw the asking price slump. After initially being served with a stop work order, Trump last week got the go-ahead for protective works on dunes on the course, now known as the Trump International Golf Links and Hotel Ireland. Doonbeg, a renowned beauty spot, is protected by strict environmental
Golf project: Donald Trump concerns for a microscopic snail that has been around since the Ice Age – the narrow-mouthed whorl snail, or vertigo angustior, which measures about 1.8mm in height. Mr Trump has said he will work with environmental experts in any redevelopment: ‘The snail issue is an issue that will roll on and one that we will be very protective of,’ he said. ‘It’s a special piece of land and we are going to do it in a very, very special way and we are going to do it in a very environmentally sensitive way. It’s very important to us.’ The billionaire New Yorker said hundreds of jobs will be created through his investment in Ireland.
Ballsology: Artist Frank O’Dea sent us in a photo of these golf balls, his own creation, which he plans to send as a gift to Donald Trump to mark his purchase of Doonbeg. They are a reference to the €200,000 Anglo reportedly spent on a set of golf balls at the height of the boom
A POLISH man has avoided jail after he assaulted a friend following a drunken argument over the nationality of a famous poet. Wojciech Wolny, 31, was convicted of assault causing harm at a birthday party in his north Dublin home on January 15, 2012. He had denied the charge but was found guilty by a jury after a two-day trial in January. Wolny, with an address at Bremore Pastures Way, Balbriggan, was given a suspended sentence of two-and-a-half years at Dublin Circuit Criminal Court. Judge Martin Nolan ordered that Wolny produce a further sum of €1,500 to be given to the victim in compensation, on top of the €3,000 he had already brought to court. The court heard that both Wolny and the victim had consumed a large amount of alcohol on the night. An argument began between the two men about whether the famous poet Adam Mickiewicz was Lithuanian or Polish. The row escalated into a fight and Wolny hit Mr Miskevich in the face. Wolny was arrested and told gardaí that Mr Miskevich had been behaving ‘crazy’. The court heard that Mr Miskevich suffered a fractured eye socket.

‘glorifying torture’
Martial arts maestro ScOTT ADkinS, 37, has worked with Jackie Chan and the Expendables cast but remains one of Hollywood’s unsung action heroes
Your latest film, Ninja: Shadow Of A Tear, has some very cool fight scenes. Which is your favourite? None of it’s
favourable when you’re doing it, because it’s all quite painful…
Did you get any injuries?
Unfortunately, yes – I hurt my back quite badly. It’s because of all the fight scenes. You can’t say: ‘Look, let’s stop,’ because it’s a low-budget film. You have to plough on through. I couldn’t actually kick with my right leg for about a week. I needed a back brace and physio every day, and I tried to rearrange the fights so that I wasn’t using my right leg.
You speak lots of Japanese in it – was that tricky? It was very

For action films, you’re in a sound-proofed room and you’re mic’d up, watching the replay of a fight sequence and you have to re-enact the sounds of your voice when you’re fighting – not the dialogue but the ‘hyur, hurs’. Someone should film that because it is absurd. The next time I do that, I think I’ll wear a straitjacket.

You’ve worked with some legendary stunt men and action directors. Who have you learned the most from?
I worked with Jackie Chan early on in my career, on The Medallion, and he’s probably the most legendary of all – the pain he’s put his own body through for his audience is phenomenal. To watch him perform 38 takes of the same movement – it showed me what a perfectionist he was.

Lots of people have called you one of the most underrated action stars in Hollywood. Do you agree? Yes. I want to be given
a chance to shine in a big-budget film. I feel like luck hasn’t been on my side: I’m still waiting for someone to give me that shot. If I get my chance to shine and I blow it, fair enough. But I wouldn’t…

Publican not entitled to State cost payout THE State will not pay the legal costs of a publican accused of threatening another pub owner to close their premises. All charges were dropped against John Stokes, 57, with an address in England, who owned the Players Lounge in Fairview and was accused of threatening Castle Inn owner Shane Simpson, after his trial collapsed following legal argument. Judge Carmel Stewart said there is no ruling stating that an accused is entitled to costs when charges against them have been dropped.

BEING pregnant significantly increases a woman driver’s chances of having a serious car crash. A Canadian study of 500,000 pregnant women found that during the second month of pregnancy the risk of being involved in a road accident rose by 42 per cent. In the three years before getting pregnant, the women between them had 177 crashes per month. The crash rate rose to 252 per month in the second trimester, or middle period, of pregnancy. One in 50 pregnant women can expect to be involved in a serious car crash while at the wheel, say the scientists in the Canadian Medical Association Journal. Lead researcher Dr Donald Redelmeier, from the University of Toronto, said: ‘These findings are not a reason to stop driving; the findings primarily emphasise the need to drive more carefully.’ The study looked at whether nausea, fatigue and distraction might increase the risk of traffic accidents. The researchers also mention ‘baby brain’ – a mental ‘fog’ associated with pregnancy – but stopped short of linking it directly to a heightened risk of accidents.

Hartnett, who now dates British star Tamsin Egerton, 25, told UTV’s This Morning: ‘I went back and wrote a screenplay and I got back together with my high-school girlfriend and just spent time with my friends and family back home.’ The star was on the red carpet last night at the St Pancras Renaissance hotel in London to promote his Sky Atlantic TV series Penny Dreadful, co-starring Billie Piper and Eva Green.

Ricky Gervais woke up with a sore head after enjoying a boozy session with Russell Crowe. The TV comic and the Aussie actor fell into a foulmouthed drunken stupor after meeting in Newcastle over the weekend. ‘Who am I getting drunk with at the moment?’ Gervais posted on Twitter, with Crowe suggesting ‘Rodger Moore’ as they shared a snap of themselves huddled together. Gervais also took a cheeky swipe at the Noah star – saying: ‘I honestly haven’t been this drunk for ages. Russell Crowe is a f***ing terrible influence. Not just on me but on the world.’

Murder trial told Pistorius ‘suffers anxiety disorder’ THE chief prosecutor in the murder trial of Oscar Pistorius has said the athlete should be placed under psychiatric observation after an expert called by the defence said Pistorius has an anxiety disorder. Judge Thokozile Masipa has not yet ruled on the request. Prosecutor Gerrie Nel said he had no other option but to ask for a study

of Pistorius’s mental health following testimony by a psychiatrist who said the double-amputee athlete’s anxiety could have shaped the way he responded to perceived threats. Pistorius has said he killed girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp by mistake last year, fearing that there was an intrud-
er in his home when he fired through a closed toilet door in the early hours of February 14, 2013. The prosecution says he killed her intentionally after an argument. Psychiatrist Dr Merryll Vorster told the court that events during Pistorius’s life, including the amputation of his lower legs as a baby and his late mother’s habit of sleeping with a gun
under her pillow, contributed to his ‘increasing stress’. ‘Overall, Mr Pistorius appears to be a mistrustful and guarded person,’ Dr Vorster said. She said the athlete displayed ‘escalating levels of anxiety’ through his life when she interviewed him. She said she also spoke to members of his family and some of his friends.

Kayaks blamed for deaths of 3 men in same family Recovery operation: Marine police remove a body from the River Tyne, above; left, one of the kayaks found at the scene yesterday Pictures: North News
THREE experienced kayakers found drowned in a fast-flowing river were from the same family. The two unnamed brothers, aged 41 and 40, and their cousin of 36, died on Sunday. All were from South Shields, and died on the River Tyne in Northumberland. Police said water levels were faster flowing and higher than normal on Sunday because of heavy rain. The flat design of their kayaks may have been a direct cause of
their deaths, an expert suggested yesterday. Allen Wearmouth, a canoe coach, said photos of the kayaks recovered by police showed they were like surfboards, where the user sits on top. ‘If you get rough water, you are going to fall off,’ he said. Mr Wearmouth added that the stretch of the river where the tragedy occurred was very dangerous. He did not know the circumstances of the tragedy, but said: ‘If a sit-on-top kayak gets
into that weir, they are going to capsize, the probability is 100 per cent. This news has taken me aback, it’s so sad,’ he added. Chief superintendent Gordon Milward said: ‘They would be challenging conditions for anybody. Part of the thrill of kayaking is that element of risk. What I would say to anyone is balance that against personal safety. If you are in any doubt about how well equipped you feel you are to go into the water, come back another day.’

Harris ‘abused teen friend of his daughter on holiday’ ROLF Harris carried out a string of indecent assaults on a teenage friend of his daughter – on one occasion even abusing her while the pair shared a bedroom, a court heard yesterday. The woman, who claims the entertainer began abusing her when she was 13, said he appeared to get ‘a thrill’ out of carrying out assaults while his own daughter was present. She told London’s Southwark Crown Court that she kept the alleged abuse secret for years, frightened that nobody would

believe her, but confessed to her parents in her 20s. She later told Harris’s daughter Bindi when Trial: Rolf Harris the star’s daughter asked her: ‘has he touched you?’, the court was told. Harris is accused of 12 counts of indecent assault, seven relating to the woman, between 1968 and
1986. Giving evidence from behind a curtain, the woman outlined a series of alleged indecent assaults carried out by the star in his home, and in hers – even when her parents were downstairs. Harris remained impassive as the alleged victim gave evidence. The jury has already been told Harris wrote to the woman’s father admitting a consensual adult affair, but denying that he had abused her as a child. The trial was adjourned until the following day.

A ‘yes’ vote for independence, yet Putin leaves Donetsk in cold by DANIEL BINNS A REQUEST by two Ukrainian regions to join Russia has been rejected by prime minister Vladimir Putin. Voters in Donetsk and Luhansk chose overwhelmingly to become independent states, according to election organisers. But the Kremlin has suggested there is no intention to annex the regions – with Mr Putin urging the Ukrainian president to engage in talks with insurgents. Foreign minister Sergey Lavrov said he ‘hopes the practical implementation of the referendum results will take place in a civilised way without violence’. Organisers of Sunday’s ballot said 89 per cent of Donetsk voters wanted their region to become a people’s republic – increasing to 96 per cent in Luhansk. But Oleksandr Turchynov, Ukraine’s acting president, said: ‘The farce, which terrorists call a referendum, will have no legal consequences – except the criminal reponsibility for its organisers.’ UK foreign minister William Hague
added: ‘These attempts at referendums have zero credibility in the world’s eyes. ‘They are illegal by any standards and they don’t meet a single standard of objectivity, fairElection: Pushilin ness, transparency or being properly conducted.’ After counting the votes, self-declared leader of the Donetsk People’s Republic, Denis Pushilin, said: ‘Our people have always been part of the Russian world. The history of Russia is our history.’ Both referendums have been labelled as a hastily arranged sham by Ukraine and other western nations. Mr Putin’s request for separatists and Ukraine’s government to talk has been perceived as cautious and a reflection of how the crisis has escalated. In contrast, Russia was quick to annex Crimea after it voted on independence.
Cameron: Tax-dodging Take That star should not have to return OBE UK PRIME Minister David Cameron has dismissed calls for Gary Barlow to return his OBE after the star was ordered to pay millions of pounds in tax dodged through an avoidance scheme. Mr Cameron said it was not necessary to remove Barlow’s honour because he had ‘done a huge amount for the country’ and ‘raised money for charity’. The
defence came despite the PM having previously condemned Jimmy Carr for investing in a similar tax scheme. Barlow and two other Take That members have refused to comment on reports over the weekend that they are in line for tax bills totalling tens of millions of pounds after a court ruled a partnership in which they invested was a tax avoidance scheme.

Where are the glorious Eurovision entries of yesteryear?
W
hat has happened to our once fine sport of Eurovision? time was when it was about class, dignity and honour. But now it has been reduced to nothing more than a perverted freak show with more block voting than a Lego election. the perversion I am referring to is not Conchita – who is a fine winner – but the other acts. the bland acts. For example, the Dutch entry could not have been more middle of the road if it was sung from a roundabout. that is not what the Eurovision is about, a show that made its name on pomp and ceremony that united a continent. this is our Superbowl. this is our Wrestlemania. this our Darts World Championships final. It’s time to reclaim Eurovision from the monotonous bile of ‘real’ music and take it back to a hedonistic world of camp pageantry. Conchita is our queen, our beacon of hope. With a great beard. Eamonn
■ to tina and the rest of the Russophobes who booed Russia at Eurovision – well done for showing your cluelessness at what IS happening in that Ukraine crisis. You easily absorbed the Western propaganda. and to make your day even brighter, I bet on Ukraine and Russia to be in the top ten in the Eurovision – and won. Tatyana ■ the naivety of Kevin in blaming the EU for our woes is a sight to behold (Mailbox, Mon). Does he not know that this country was bankrupted by the decisions of a small number of its own most powerful citizens? Does he not know that it was the EU institutions that kept the holes in the wall open when this country went bankrupt? Does he not know the EU is a union of democracies, the elected representatives of which signed a treaty to co-operate in matters of mutual concern? Does he not know that this democratic union replaces a situation 75 years ago in which two dictators reduced Europe to rubble in a row over who would rule? Kevin needs to bone up on reality. A Leavy

i
nterest in Persian food is on the rise, with Iranianstyle eateries popping up all around europe proving there’s more to it than the 3am kebab (tasty though that may be), and chef sally Butcher’s two successful books – Veggiestan and snackistan – struggling to stay on the shelves. the latest doyenne of its cuisine is sabrina Ghayour, who has just released her debut book, Persiana. Ghayour has long been a culinary star in the making. she launched her highly-successful supper club French Laundrette in London in 2011 as a spoof answer to American thomas Keller’s €300-a-head French Laundry pop-up at Harrods.
Ghayour’s was a fraction of the price and made headline news as the place to go for affordable but exciting food with an eastern twist. since then, the Iranian-born chef has become well- known for her Persian supper clubs around the english capital. Her 100 recipes in Persiana cover everything from sunny-flavoured salads perfect for cooling down in the summer to bulging, bejewelled rices and aromatic meat dishes. If you like puds, there are witty twists such as the eton Mess-inspired eastern Mess, a tower of cloudy meringues flecked with raspberries drenched in sweet rose water and spring-coloured pistachios. Don’t expect everything to be ‘authentic’. now that would be dull. Instead, there’s a dashing Ghayour stamp on classic combos, making it all the more vibrant.

What better way to use fish than in a delicious, hearty risotto. To save you some time and also make things easier for you when preparing this dish, ask your fishmonger to bone, fillet and skin the fish for you.
DONAL’S FISH TIPS Storing and Freezing Fish If the fish is packed in special foil wrapping by the fish retailer do not remove the fish from packaging. Simply refrigerate as soon as possible. Remember to freeze fish as you intend to use it. For example, don’t freeze an entire salmon if you intend to use portions on an ongoing basis. Instead, cut the salmon into individual pieces and then freeze.
Cooking Fish Fish is a wonderfully versatile food and in most recipes a similar species can be substituted for another. Hake, haddock and whiting are great examples of this.
bordbia.ie/fish Ghayour says: ‘For Iranians, this dish serves the purpose of cooling you down in the sweltering summers. As in Turkey, Greece and India, a yoghurt dish of this sort is a staple on the table during every family meal. Iranians love to vary the content, often using beetroot or spinach in place of the cucumber. ‘In the height of summer, this dish is virtually treated as a soup, so perhaps it is Iran’s answer to the Spanish gazpacho. It should be served chilled and, on the hottest of occasions, with ice cubes to help it stay cool.’
ingREDiEnTs serves 6 as part of a meze
1 large cucumber, coarsely grated ♦ 2tsp dried mint ♦ generous handful of golden raisins ♦ 500ml Greek yogurt ♦ sea salt ♦ freshly ground black pepper
To serve (optional): olive oil ♦ chopped walnuts ♦ finely chopped fresh mint leaves ♦ dried edible rose petals
METHOD
step 1: Carefully squeeze out and discard the excess water from the grated cucumber – you can do this by hand or in a sieve. Put the drained pulp into a mixing bowl. step 2: Add the dried mint and golden raisins to the bowl, followed by the yoghurt, and mix well. Season to taste with sea salt and black pepper. Cover with clingfilm and chill in the refrigerator until ready to serve. To serve, drizzle with a little olive oil and scatter with chopped walnuts, finely chopped mint leaves and dried rose petals, if desired. Variation: Try adding chopped fresh dill or mint, as well as walnut pieces for a different take.
PuY LEnTiL AnD QuinOA sALAD
Ghayour says: ‘Quinoa is my cupboard staple and I embrace it for its health benefits. But flavourwise it doesn’t have a lot going for it. If you combine it with herbs, citrus and Puy lentil, it goes from bland to brilliant. ‘This salad is a meal in itself, although a little grilled chicken or grilled haloumi on the side makes a brilliant accompaniment.’
ingREDiEnTs side dish (6-8)
200g quinoa ♦ 250g Puy lentils ♦ 500g baby tomatoes (I use Pomodorinos or baby plum), halved ♦ 100g flat leaf parsley, stalks and leaves finely chopped ♦ 2 x 20g packets of mint, leaves picked and finely chopped ♦ 1 x 20g packet of coriander, stalks and leaves finely chopped ♦ 1 bunch of spring
onions, thinly sliced ♦ 3-4tbsp olive oil ♦ juice of 2-3 lemons ♦ 1 heaped tbsp sumac ♦ sea salt ♦ freshly ground black pepper
METHOD
step 1: Cook the quinoa and Puy lentils separately as per packet instructions. Rinse well in cold water, drain and set aside. step 2: Put the tomatoes, chopped herbs, spring onions, olive oil and lemon juice into a large mixing bowl along with the sumac. Add several generous pinches of crushed sea salt and a generous amount of black pepper and mix the ingredients well. step 3: Add the quinoa and Puy lentils and mix well to ensure the ingredients are evenly mixed
through the salad and that the dressing coats all the quinoa and Puy lentils. Taste the salad and adjust the seasoning if required. step 4: I like to refrigerate this salad for 1-2hr before serving to allow the flavours to work their way into the quinoa and lentils. Serve with grilled fish, chicken or haloumi, or, if you are feeling lazy, just crumble in some feta cheese to make a meal of it.

Risotto with Hake and Basil TIME 40 MINUTES SERVES 4
Preheat the oven to Gas Mark 4, 180°C (150°F). 700g hake, skinned, boned and cut into chunks and seasoned A knob of butter ½ tablesp. olive oil 1 onion, peeled and finely chopped 300g carnaroli or arborio risotto rice 100ml white wine 800ml stock, heated to simmering point A little salt and black pepper 200g of vegetables – a mixture of frozen peas and broad beans works well Handful basil leaves, lightly torn
Melt a knob of butter with a dash of olive oil in a wide, shallow ovenproof saucepan over a gentle heat. Add the onion and cook until softened, but not browned. This will take about 5 minutes. Add in the rice and stir for 1-2 minutes until it starts to look translucent. Add the wine and stir until it evaporates. Pour in enough of the heated stock to just cover the rice and simmer gently, stirring now and again. Season. As the stock evaporates add more and stir intermittently until all the stock is used. This will take about 15 minutes. Taste regularly and add a little more salt if necessary.

Eat, pray, love it spain: The Camino de Santiago caters for all travellers, from pleasureseekers to pilgrims and foodies. By Daragh Reddin
I
’M standing inside the monumental Cathedral of Santiago de Compostela, marvelling at its Romanesque interior, when I suddenly find myself surrounded by a band of pilgrims – the staffs and sandals are a giveaway – who drop to their knees and begin chanting in French. I haven’t an inkling what they are singing about but the sound is so beautiful and the performers so patently sincere that, incorrigible heathen though I am, I find a lump rising in my throat and a blanket of goose-bumps spreading along my arms. The pious group, as I later discover, has spent several gruelling weeks trekking more than 800km from the Pyrenees to this holy of holies in the heart of the Galician capital. The reason for their expedition: to pay homage at the shrine of the apostle St James. Legend has it that the body of the country’s patron saint was ferried from Jerusalem to Spain following his execution, but the exact location remained lost until 813 when a shepherd was led to a burial site in the Northwest of the country by a beacon of divine light; the enterprising local bishop – absence of carbon dating notwithstanding – declared the remains discovered there were those of St James and, under the aegis of King Alfonso II, a cathedral was built on that spot in his honour. In the Middle Ages, Santiago became one of the world’s leading pilgrimage
Journey’s end: The Cathedral in Santiago de Compostela, the city at the end of the Camino pilgrimage sites and remains so to this day, albeit with countless non-believers and outdoorsy types belatedly getting in on the act. Those who tackle the Camino for religious reasons tend to travel with a special ‘passport’, which is stamped at regular intervals in hostels along the way and ensures its holder will receive a certificate of completion known as the ‘compostela’. However, my aforementioned French pals – or suckers as I like to call them – have covered a truly extravagant distance, well in excess of the 100km minimum required to attain this prized document. By contrast, we’ve just hobbled into Santiago after completing the final, more economical stretch of the ‘French way’, beginning in Sarria in the nearby region of Lugo (a distance that qualifies us for a compostela, with just kilometres to spare). While self-respecting pilgrims, or ‘peregrinos’, stay in frill-free hostels,
the idea of communal sleeping quarters, complete with wheezing roommates and smelly-sock fug, is a bridge too far for this admittedly wussy adventurer. As such, we’ve travelled with excellent Dublin-based walking holiday specialists Camino Ways, who not only arrange accommodation in a selection of very pleasant three-star hotels en route but ensure our luggage is transported – the shame! – from one destination to the next. Expect to be mocked ferociously should you choose to share this information with selfrighteous, bunion-sporting fellow travellers who’ve hauled their kit about for weeks or months on end.

Spicy: Pulpo a feira – aka boiled octopus – is a tasty local delicacy, livened up with olive oil and a sprinking of pimenton street, Calle Mayor. From here we ford a picture-postcard little bridge through a landscape so verdant it feels uncannily reminiscent of Co. Wicklow; there’s a good reason why Galicia, with its generous annual rainfall, is often referred to as ‘Green Spain’. Not even a nasty encounter with an aggressive ostrich – the ‘no-petting’ sign caught my eye only after I’d attempted to snuggle – can detract from the new-found sense of wellbeing I experience as we near the 15km mark and descend into a valley of coniferous woodland; a white-knuckle walk over a wind-swept bridge marks the final stage of our first leg before we arrive at the well-appointed Pousada hotel in sleepy Portomarín. Following a restorative swim in the outdoor pool, we’re ready to explore the town before sipping crisp San Miguels in the main square as the sun sets over the town’s Templar church. We continue in a similar vein for four more days, wending our way through breathtakingly beautiful oak forests and meadows, with wellearned pit stops in sleepy hamlets en route, where we alternate between refreshing local beers and dense cortados (the Spanish version of caffè macchiato). Galician seafood is invariably delicious but the region’s signature dish, pulpo a feira (boiled octopus), which we gorge on in our halfway point, Melide, is a particular highlight; it mightn’t sound terribly appetising but the white meat, gussied up with a little olive oil and a sprinkling of pimenton (a sweet Spanish variant of paprika), is sublime. By contrast, the rubbery pigs’ ears – I’m sure I saw them wiggle on the plate – we try in a wine-fuelled, devil-may-care moment in Santiago have since become a motif in my nightmares. Santiago is the Catholic Church’s holiest site outside the Vatican but anyone expecting a reverential atmosphere couldn’t be more wrong. It’s a gem of a city, teeming not only with Christian wayfarers but pleasure-seekers taking advantage of its excellent, affordably priced restaurants and lively bar scene. We stay in the atmospheric, 16th-century monastery Hospedería San Martín Pinario – its central location means some of the city’s best eateries and watering holes, most notably on the tapas-mecca Rúa do Franco, are in spitting distance. Two days of overindulgence later and we’re quite possibly the only pilgrims who’ve ever finished the Camino weighing significantly more than when we started.

Furyk was facing a par putt on the 18th when play was suspended, the american biting his putter in frustration as thunder sounded. the former US Open champion duly holed out to complete a superb 66 when play resumed, and

However, the man who holed the putt which ensured europe retained the ryder Cup in 2012 produced another brilliant stroke under pressure, holing a curling par attempt from 29 feet to remain one ahead. a par on the last therefore secured the win and

Time for change: Lerner
James milner admits he felt for his england captain steven Gerrard at the moment the title race swung decisively in manchester City’s favour. Gerrard’s liverpool looked on course to pip City to the Premier league before the reds skipper slipped to allow Chelsea to score a crucial goal at anfield last month. Chelsea’s victory proved fatal to his team’s title chances as City then seized a chance to snatch the trophy. They wrapped up the title with a routine win over West Ham on sunday and, speaking ahead of last night’s victory parade, milner said: ‘i am disappointed for him as an england team-mate – he’s had a great season, liverpool have had a great season.
Villa on the market as Lerner confirms he wants to sell up AsTon Villa owner Randy Lerner has declared his intention to put the club up for sale. The American entrepreneur, who bought Villa from long-time owner Doug Ellis in 2006, said it is time for the club to look for ‘fresh, invigorated leadership’. Lerner’s future had been in doubt for much of an acrimonious campaign which ended in a lowly 15thplace finish after sunday’s 3-0 defeat at Tottenham. Lerner said in a statement: ‘I feel now is the time for me to look for new ownership. I have asked the world of (manager) Paul Lambert and (chief executive) Paul Faulkner and they have both delivered selflessly. on a personal level it is time for me to get on with other aspects of my career. I owe it to Villa to move on, and look for fresh, invigorated leadership if in my heart I feel I can no longer do the job.’
‘It was close. To come out on top is amazing’ ‘i think it shows the competitiveness of the league, it was so close. it wasn’t a two-horse race, there were three or four teams until the end. ‘To come out on top is amazing. You can’t put into words how difficult it is to win the Premier league.’ Things might have been lost for City as they were beaten at anfield last month and then held to a draw at home by struggling sunderland. But milner feels the team deserves credit for refusing to give up. The 28-year-old added: ‘You can see this team – and not only this year – we never give in. ‘We had a bit of luck with the liverpool results but to go and win the last four games, under severe pressure, shows the character in the team and the manager’s determination.’

Hodgson offers Cole a brazil lifeline
Open door: Hodgson could yet call on Cole to play a part, inset
englanD manager roy Hodgson has not ruled out a shock return for ashley Cole and insists the ball will be in his court if leighton Baines gets injured before the World Cup. Cole announced his retirement from international football on Sunday after being left out of Hodgson’s 23-man squad for Brazil next month. However, Hodgson last night admitted he could still pick the Chelsea left-back if Baines gets injured against Peru in a Wembley friendly on May 31. the 33-year-old is not one of seven players to go on standby but, when asked if the player could be called up if there was an injury to his firstchoice left back, Hodgson replied: ‘You’d have to ask ashley that one. ‘it would have to be after June 2 [when Hodgson confirms his final
squad and only injured players can be replaced]. if Baines gets injured against Peru, then yes ashley would be the right answer. He’s not really a cover player, he’s a no.1, but i decided Baines was no.1 for now and then Shaw. Circumstances will show whether that decision is a very good one or a very bad one. ‘a 23-man squad didn’t give me the luxury of three left-backs.’ Cole’s decision, announced via twitter, appeared to be final but he may yet be required, in an emergency, with Hodgson – who yesterday successfully side-stepped questions about sponsors Vauxhall, who hosted the squad announcement at their incongruous luton HQ – not comfortable with taking Southampton’s Shaw to Brazil as his only left-back.

Sherwood claims Bale exit was key TIM sHERWooD believes Tottenham’s chances of securing a top-four finish this season were wiped out the moment the club sold Gareth Bale (pictured) to Real Madrid last summer. spurs finished sixth in the Premier League and missed out on Champions League football for a fourth consecutive campaign. sherwood said: ‘We’re taking out one of the best players in the world and replacing him with seven players who have never played in this competition before. How on earth did people think we would be title challengers or even make the top four?’
Oscar quits ‘Gulls BRIGHTon have accepted boss oscar Garcia’s resignation. The seagulls’ Premier League promotion hopes were dashed by a 6-2 aggregate defeat to Derby in the play-offs with Garcia, who is thought to have been unhappy for some time, offering to stand down. ‘Although I do not have any plans, I have decided to move on,’ he said.

Glamour home ties for cricketers in busy 2015 by RyAn bAiLEy
LESS than a week after the 2014 international season was brought to a halt on the back of just two games, Cricket Ireland has moved to ensure next summer’s schedule is less threadbare with the announcement of One-Day Internationals against England and Australia. The RSA Insurance series against Sri Lanka in Clontarf last week, during which one of the games was washed out, represented Ireland’s only fixtures of a quiet summer and the lack of game time nine months out from a third World Cup has generated widespread condemnation. Phil Simmons’ squad will next assemble in 11 weeks’ time for outings against Sri Lanka A and fellow associates Scotland in early September, but the bulk of their frontline players are likely to be absent on the basis that their counties aren’t obliged to release them for fixtures not involving Full Member opposition. Although a date and venue is yet to be set for the visit of neighbours England, William Porterfield and his side will face Australia on August 27, with a location to be confirmed.
‘We are thrilled to welcome both Australia and England’ The two glamour fixtures follow involvement in the World Cup during February and March in Australia/New Zealand and the co-hosting, alongside Scotland, of the ICC World Twenty20 Qualifiers in July. ‘We are thrilled to welcome both England and Australia to Ireland once again,’ Warren Deutrom, Cricket Ireland CEO, said. ‘2015 promises to be a landmark year for Irish cricket with the World Cup, home ODI’s against two of the world’s top teams, and co-hosting the World Twenty20 Qualifiers.’ It’s likely Malahide – which hosted its first international game last year with a sell-out crowd of 10,000 – and Stormont will be given a match each but the details have yet to be ironed out. Much depends on England’s 2015 schedule, with June seen as a probable date.

LOWRy HOPinG FOR THiRD biG Win sEEs CORK As A FOTA OPPORTuniTy GOlFeR shane lowry is hoping to make it a hat-trick of wins in the Rebel County when he tees it up at the Irish Open at Fota Island next month, writes Gareth Makim. the Offaly star, who stunned european golf by winning the title as an amateur back in 2009, has never played professionally in Cork, but has fond memories of a pair of amateur victories. ‘I won the Irish Close, my first big win as an amateur, in 2007 and then a scratch cup just a few weeks before I won the Irish Open in 2009,’ lowry said at the launch of this year’s tournament, which tees off on June 19. ‘I think it’s a bit of a coincidence but obviously I have good memories down here, and if I can make it a trio of wins I’d be happy.’ lowry joins fellow Irish stars Rory mcIlroy, Graeme mcDowell, Darren Clarke and Padraig Harrington in headlining what is hoped will be a top class field at Fota. england’s Paul Casey will defend the title won at Carton House last year, and with rising star matteo manassero of Italy and Us showman John Daly already committed to play, and advance ticket sales already ahead of recent stagings at Killarney and Carton House, organisers are confident of hitting their 100,000 spectator target for the tournament. Irish Open tickets are on sale now, starting at €30, with Under-16s free with a paying adult. For more information, visit www. irishopen.ie or www. europeantour.com/tickets

Released: Joey O’Brien
O’Brien out of squad for summer’s friendlies West Ham defender Joey O’Brien has been released from the Republic of Ireland squad for their end-of-season friendlies. O’Brien was included in the provisional 32-man party for the games against turkey, Italy, Costa Rica and Portugal when manager martin O’Neill named it last week. However, he will now not join up and concentrate instead on his own fitness programme. a spokesman for the Football association of Ireland said: ‘the Football association of Ireland confirmed that following discussions between the FaI and West Ham’s medical teams, Joey O’Brien has been released from martin O’Neill’s provisional squad to manage his off season medical programme.’ O’Brien will not be replaced in the initial party for the clashes with turkey in Dublin on may 25, Italy at Craven Cottage on may 31, Costa Rica in Philadelphia on June 6 and Portugal in New Jersey on June 10.
