Dressed in black and armed with cameras, ‘superhero’ hunts down rogue road users

I am the law: The self-styled ‘justice seeker on a bicycle’ says his footage has resulted in hundreds of prosecutions

Drivers beware... it’s Traffic Droid

Road warrior: Lewis Dediare is equipped for his battle against traffic crime

BATMAN has a cape and the Batmobile, Superman has X-ray vision and can fly... and Traffic Droid? Well, he’s got some cameras and a bike. He may not be the traditional superhero but you still wouldn’t want this traffic crime fighter chasing you down. Dressed head to toe in black and armed with seven video cameras, he patrols the streets naming and shaming errant motorists. ‘Since I started, my footage has resulted in about 200 police warnings a year and four or five prosecutions,’ said the real-life action man, aka tele-

coms officer Lewis Dediare, 39. ‘Traffic Droid is a superhero after justice.’ The keen cyclist was inspired to rid London’s streets of bad driving five years ago after a road accident left him with several broken ribs. ‘After my experiences, I was very angry. I decided action had to be taken and installed the cameras to try to humiliate bad drivers,’ he said. ‘I upload my footage on to police website Roadsafe London, and the police decide what to do.’ All bad driving angers Traffic Droid

but the cardinal sin is a ‘left-hook’– when a motorist passes a cyclist on the left and turns right into the bike’s path. ‘It can kill cyclists,’ he said. Unsurprisingly, road users do not always welcome his interventions. He revealed: ‘I have been threatened many times and attacked three times but I never fight back because I don’t take the law into my own hands.’ All this fighting crime has also come at a cost to his personal life. ‘It hasn’t left much time to find a girlfriend,’ he added. Traffic Droid features in The Complainers on Channel 4 from tonight.

Adams says swing to left is more than a protest FroM PAgE 1 « Taoiseach Enda Kenny said he wanted to thank Mr Gilmore for his ‘courage’ in making the collective decisions that have turned Ireland back from economic collapse. Social Protection Minister Joan Burton was tipped as the favourite to be next Labour leader. The parliamentary party will meet tomorrow ahead of an internal vote among wider party members to select the successor. Meanwhile, Sinn Féin president Gerry Adams rejected the Taoiseach’s claims that the swing to the left was nothing more than a protest. ‘This is deep-rooted, it’s profound, it’s a sea change. The

landscape here politically has changed,’ he said. Since winning 19.4 per cent of first preference votes, and 37 Dáil seats in the 2011 general election, seven members of Labour’s parliamentary party have resigned because of dissatisfaction with the actions taken by the party in Government. Among these were TD Colm Keaveney, who voted against cuts to the respite care grant, junior health minister Roisin Shortall who resigned over health cuts, and MEP Nessa Childers, who said she would no longer ‘support a Government that is actually hurting people’.

A MAN died after an altercation at an election party in the early hours of yesterday. Liam Horan, 60, the brother of unsuccessful Galway City Council Independent candidate Jimmy Horan, suffered a heart attack at Crowe’s Bar in Galway city. The premises are owned by the family of re-elected Fianna Fáil councillors Ollie and Michael Crowe. Gardaí were last night questioning a man, 52. This is the second death of the local elections. On Friday, Monaghan Fine Gael candidate Owen Brannigan, 54, died after collapsing near his home while canvassing.

Eurosceptic parties gain in political ‘earthquake’ STUNNING victories in European Parliament elections by nationalist and Eurosceptic parties left the EU facing a giant policy dilemma. French prime minister Manuel Valls called the breakthrough by Marine Le Pen’s far-right National Front, which topped a national vote for the first time, pushing his Socialists into third place, a political ‘earthquake’. There were also major gains for farright parties in Denmark and Hungary, while radical-left group Syriza topped the poll in recession-hit Greece.

The anti-austerity vote was amplified in many countries by a low turnout of just 43.1 per cent, but the pro-European centre ground held firm in Germany, as Chancellor Angela Merkel’s conservative bloc emerged as the country’s strongest party, and Italy, where centreleft prime minister Matteo Renzi also bucked the trend. Merkel called the far right and populist advances ‘remarkable and regrettable’ and said France needed to focus on competitiveness, jobs and economic growth to overcome voters’ disenchantment.

Democratic Unionist Diane Dodds received more than 131,000 first preferences. But the wife of DUP deputy leader Nigel Dodds did not reach the required quota on the first round of counting and will having the second highest first preference votes, followed by sitting MEPs Fine Gael’s Mairead McGuinness and Independent Marian Harkin. In the South constituency, sitting MEP Brian Crowley of Fianna Fáil took the first seat with more than 27 per cent of the vote. The poll-topper was elected on the first count, having exceeded the quota. Speaking to Newstalk, he said it was ‘a very humbling experience to get that size of a vote’.

have to wait for confirmation of her success. The third incumbent Jim Nicholson of the Ulster Unionists is currently ahead in the race to secure the third seat. Sinn Féin’s Liadh Ní Riada was elected on the fourth count with Fine Gael’s Sean Kelly in third. His party colleague Simon Harris polled better than running mate Deirdre Clune, putting them in fourth and fifth place respectively. The remaining seats in the two four-seat constituencies will be decided on transfers. In the local elections, seven seats remain unfilled in Fingal County Council after a recount in Swords was called on Sunday.

Triumphant Farage targets poll surge at Westminster

Happy days: Ukip’s Farage

UKIP leader Nigel Farage pledged to take seats in Westminster after a historic win over the main parties in the European elections. He hailed his party’s first win in a national election as an ‘earthquake’ in British politics and said: ‘Ukip is going to win seats in the elections next year.’ Ukip dominated the vote with 24 MEPs, including one in Wales and its first representative in Scotland. The result also found Nick Clegg facing calls to step down as leader

after the Liberal Democrats were left with only one MEP. David Cameron blamed ‘deep disillusionment’ with the EU for Ukip’s victory – but again dismissed as a ‘myth’ the prospect of any electoral pact with the party. The prime minister claimed an allout victory for the Conservatives was ‘achievable’ – despite winning just 19 seats and 23.93 per cent of the vote and the only way to guarantee an in/out referendum on Britain’s membership of the EU.

Cashing in on the Kim and Kanye craic in Cork

by ED CARTy

TOURISM chiefs are aiming to cash in on reports of one of the world’s most famous couples honeymooning in Cork. Celebrity television star Kim Kardashian and rapper Kanye West reportedly flew into Ireland yesterday for a supposedly secret getaway. Rumours spread of the glamour arrival after a private jet landed at Cork Airport and whisked a couple away in limousines, with scores of fans and inquisitive locals descending on the nearby luxury Castlemartyr Resort. The rapper, 36, and reality TV star, 33, took off for a rural retreat after celebrating their weekend wedding in Florence. And Tourism Ireland is now hoping to cash in on the worldwide interest in the couple’s Irish honeymoon by targeting their online fan base of more than 40million Twitter and Facebook followers. ‘We’re working hard to produce a guide for their fans about where they are, or rather where they might be,’ marketing director Mark Henry said. The couple are reportedly expected to spend one day in Dublin but the frequent social media users have remained unusually quiet about their plans.

Bodies believed to be missing men TwO bodies have been found in the search for two men missing for more than a month. Eoin O’Connor, 32, and Anthony Keegan, 33, both from the Coolock area of north Dublin, had been reported missing by concerned family members back in late April. It was thought they disappeared after arranging to travel to Ballyjamesduff, Co Cavan to meet an associate, with one suggestion they had gone to collect a debt. The bodies, which have not been formally identified, were found on the shore of Inchicup island on Lough Sheelin, on the Cavan-Meath side of the lake.

Make love, not war. That is the key to getting your message heard through the everyday brand chatter that surrounds the public, says HubSpot’s marketing director KiERAn FLAnAgAn

HubSpot is all about inbound marketing. What is inbound marketing? It’s about creating

Writing good content is time consuming – how can businesses develop content without it taking too much time? There is definitely an

investment of both time and resources needed when developing content. But there are also lots of creative ways that you can scale your content rapidly with very little resources. A US company that sold swimming pools became the most successful company in their market by simply taking their customers’ top 30 frequently asked questions and created a whole year’s worth of content around those subjects.

growth is the fact that our inbound marketing platform works. All data we have points towards outbound marketing tactics becoming less impactful. The consumer is now in control of the buying cycle. They are choosing when, where, and how to engage with a business. Is not this ‘content’ What inbound just the old-school marketing helps advertorial in businesses do is disguise? social media, consumers have a big impact on how a business is perceived. What do you feel is the most common marketing mistake nowadays? One of the most

common mistakes I hear from businesses is that they feel it’s a choice between inbound or outbound. If they decide to adopt inbound marketing, then all their outbound activity should be turned off immediately. This scares them from trying anything new and they get left behind. Businesses should figure out what part of their current marketing strategy is working for them and keep doing that. Stop doing the parts that are not providing a positive return and reinvest that money into an inbound marketing plan.

A DRUG addict who robbed a post office and tried to use a motorist as a getaway driver has been jailed for seven years. Jonathan Duffy, 30, tried to board a Dublin Bus with €3,000 cash after failing to seize one woman’s vehicle, but was forced to run onto the dual carriageway in search of another escape route when he realised he had no change for a ticket. Duffy, of Kilclare Crescent, Tallaght, pleaded guilty at Dublin Circuit Criminal Court to robbing Blackrock Post Office and possessing an imitation firearm with intent to commit robbery on April 16, 2013. He also pleaded guilty to unlawfully interfering with a vehicle and attempting to seize a car by intimidation on the same date. Duffy has 35 previous convictions including ten for robbery. He had been on temporary release while serving a seven-year sentence for similar offences just days before he entered the post office wearing a balaclava and holding the €2 toy gun. Garda Andrew Doyle said Duffy told him in interview he got a ‘fat man idea’ to rob a post office after taking tablets in the city centre. Gda Doyle agreed with Justin McQuade BL, defending, his client was under the influence of his €50a-day tablet habit at the time, but had entered an early guilty plea. Mr McQuade submitted that his client is a ‘damaged young man with significant difficulties’ and a long history of drug abuse. Judge Mary Ellen Ring said she couldn’t overlook the terror Duffy inflicted on his victims. She backdated the seven-year sentence to September last year.

Still texting at the Killer driver wishes wheel despite fines he had died instead DRIVERS are still using their mobile phones despite new penalties brought in this month. A one-hour field study found some drivers are still using their phones to take and make calls, for texting or browsing while driving or when queuing in traffic. Under the new rules, drivers who send a text or email or go online with their phone, even if the phone is hands-free, are liable to a court fine of up to €1,000 for a first offence or €2,000 for a subsequent offence and/or three months in jail. One young female motorist was observed holding her phone against the steering wheel to use both hands to text while driving around a corner. The study was carried out by AA Motor Insurance last week at the junction between St Stephen’s Green and Dawson Street. ‘This is utterly lethal carry-on under any circumstance, let alone at a central location where jaywalking is very common,’ said AA’s Conor Faughnan.

A DRUG addict who knocked down and killed a mother-of-four while she was shopping with her sister has received a three-and-a-half year sentence and a 30-year driving ban. Philip Trimble, 35, of Oscar Traynor Road, Santry, later told gardaí he wished it was him who had died and not the victim, Coombe midwife Frances McCarthy, 56, on January 11, 2013. The court heard Trimble had been driving at over 50mph when his car mounted a footpath and hit a roadside signpost near Marks and Spencer on Middle Abbey Street. Ms McCarthy was run over and her sister, Mary O’Connor, and a third pedestrian, Brian Sexton, were lifted onto the bonnet, carried some yards and thrown to the ground in the same collision. Judge Mary Ellen Ring noted that Ms McCarthy ‘seems to have been an extraordinary woman’ and heard a unit in the Coombe has been named for her.

errie eDWArDS has blamed hellish touring schedules for delaying her big day with One Direction hunk Zayn Malik. The 20-year-old told me how she had to put the bubbly on ice after discovering her lover will be on the road again next February. ‘i’m guessing so, yes,’ she said of shelving the plans, revealing her own tour schedule is full until May 2015. ‘But after that, once it starts dying down a little bit touring-wise, we’ll be able to get into it.’ However, the Little Mix star revealed she and her bandmates prefer having their men at arm’s length. ‘it makes it a bit more exciting because you don’t get to see each other, so when you do see each other, you get butterflies. it’s nice. it would be hard if we didn’t feel like they were worth it,’ she said backstage at the group’s show at London’s O2 on Sunday. Loved-up Leigh-Anne Pinnock, 22, is hoping footballer Jordan Kiffin will pop the question soon though, saying: ‘i can’t wait to get engaged and get married. i just want the ring and planning everything and the dress.’

Little Mix have recalled the moment a crazed fan ‘pounced’ after getting in a lift with them during their time on The X Factor in 2011. ‘He kind of grabbed us. It was horrible. He was a grown man, as well,’ said Jade Thirlwall, 21. Perrie Edwards, also 21, added: ‘The security grabbed him. We were only little and it was scary seeing something like that for the first time.’

Madonna whipped fans into a frenzy yesterday by hinting she was about to stage a surprise pop comeback – with a little help from Katy Perry. UKRAINE has launched air strikes against proRussia militants in a bid to drive them out of Donetsk airport. Dense black smoke was seen coming from the airport buildings yesterday as fighter jets attacked rebel positions. The fighting came after Ukraine president-elect Petro Poroshenko promised to negotiate an end to the crisis in the east by offering to open talks with Moscow. Several vehicles full of armed men were seen arriving in the area next to the airport before gunfire began peppering the strongholds. Trucks of reinforcements followed shortly after. Vladislav Seleznyov, a spokesman for Kiev’s anti-terrorist operation, wrote on his Facebook account the military had given an ultimatum to the armed groups occupying the airport to lay down their arms. Denis Pushilin, a leader of the separatists, said they had sent men to the airport to help supporters who had been detained. After claiming victory in Sunday’s vote, Mr Poroshenko said his first step as president will be to visit the Donbass eastern industrial region, where separatists have seized government buildings and declared independence. ‘Peace in the country and peace in the east is my main priority,’ he added. But he had harsh words for the pro-Russia gunmen, comparing them yesterday to ‘Somalian pirates’. Russia welcomed Mr Poroshenko’s offer of talks, raising hopes that his election will ease tensions between the two countries.

Open sesame! Alibaba eyes €15billion pot

L

IKE many great ideas, it all started over a beer. In 1995, Jack Ma, an English teacher from China, was introduced to something called the internet while visiting a friend in Seattle. ‘I searched the word ‘‘beer”, b-ee-r, very simple word,’ he said in a TV interview years later. ‘I found American beer, German beer and no Chinese beer. So I was curious. I searched “China”, and all the search engines said, “No China, no data”.’ There is nothing small about what Ma has done in the past 15 years. In 1999, he channelled that curiosity into creating a retail web service from the front room of his apartment in Hangzhou.

231m

people spent €180bn on Alibaba’s websites last year, more than eBay and Amazon combined

Chinese tech and retail giant Alibaba is preparing to launch on the US stock market. It is already a multi-billion mix of Amazon, eBay and PayPal, but is it ready to take on the world? ROSS McGUINNESS reports... The resulting company, Alibaba, has gone on to become the world’s biggest e-commerce group, generating almost €6billion in revenue last year. Ma still has the apartment. Alibaba isn’t merely an internet company – it’s an empire. The original site, Alibaba.com, still exists and caters for small businesses wishing to buy anything from underwear to tractors. But the Alibaba Group’s biggest website is online shopping service Taobao (meaning ‘digging for treas-

ure’). It is a cross between Amazon and eBay that lists more than 800million products at any one time. Another site, Tmall.com, lets shoppers buy directly from brands. British clothing company Burberry launched a virtual storefront on the site last month. But Alibaba’s reach goes much further – into online payments in the shape of Aliplay, a Chinese version of PayPal, and smartphone messaging app Laiwang. It has also set up

news@metroherald.ie its own cloud computing and banking services. In addition, the group has a large investment portfolio, including stakes in microblogging site Weibo and video clip service Youku Tudou, China’s answers to Twitter and YouTube, respectively. Alibaba is making the most of China’s 600million internet users but it could be on the verge of going global. Earlier this month, it filed documents for an upcoming initial public offering on an American stock exchange (it hasn’t yet revealed if it will be the Nasdaq or the New York Stock Exchange). The move could raise as much as €15billion, which would beat Facebook’s own IPO two years ago, which raised €11billion.

T

HE group revealed more than 230million people spent more than €180billion on its websites last year, more than Amazon and eBay combined. But while those US tech companies should be concerned in the long run, Alibaba has not yet signalled an intention to dive into the American market. With 800million web users expected in China by 2015, it doesn’t have to. However, in his address to staff in his small apartment in 1999 (Alibaba now has 25,000 employees), Ma said: ‘Our competitors are not in China but in Silicon Valley.’ The footage is included in a 2012 documentary about Alibaba, called Crocodile In The Yangtze, which took its title from a quote by Ma

when he (correctly) predicted how the company would fight off eBay’s planned Chinese invasion in the mid-2000s. ‘eBay is a shark in the ocean; we are a crocodile in the Yangtze River,’ he said at the time. ‘If we fight in the ocean, we will lose, but if we fight in the river, we will win.’ While eBay charged sellers for listings, Taobao.com offered them for free, resulting in a war that eBay decided it could not win. It pulled out of the Chinese market. The Alibaba IPO could be the biggest in tech history. Ma has a nine per cent stake in the group, while Yahoo! owns a quarter of the company. In an email to staff last week, Ma said going public was a ‘pit stop’ on the road to something even bigger. But does Alibaba need to go global to maintain success? ‘They don’t need to go to America to build a colossal business,’ said technology journalist Milo Yiannopoulos. ‘It shows that Silicon Valley isn’t the only place in the world that can build these massive businesses. ‘It shows that the Anglosphere isn’t the only market for these businesses. ‘It’s the company that has fingers in all of the pies,’ he said. ‘There is almost no area of digital business in which Alibaba isn’t doing something. ‘Rather than seeing it as a Chinese eBay or a Chinese whatever, we should really look at it as the Chinese Google. ‘We’re seeing instead the build-up of separate empires on opposite sides of the world.’

Resistance is futile, Thai coup chief warns public THAILAND’S army chief has told opponents that protest against military rule was ‘useless’ and would only spark more violence. Gen Prayuth Chan-ocha said he had seized power to restore order after seven months of unrest and political deadlock. Speaking for the first time since Thursday’s coup, he told a news conference yesterday: ‘I’m not here to argue with anyone.

‘I want to bring everything out in the open and fix it. Everyone must help me,’ he said, before adding: ‘Do not criticise, do not create new problems. It’s no use.’ The warning came as an aide to former prime minister Yingluck Shinawatra said she had been released from military custody. The junta is holding more than 200 people in custody, including most of the ousted government. Gen Prayuth

said they were being given time ‘to calm themselves down’ and none was being tortured or beaten. He told social media users to avoid doing anything that could fan the conflict and called for an end to anti-coup demonstrations in Bangkok and other cities. ‘Do you want to go back to the old days? If you want it that way, then I will have to enforce the law,’ Gen Prayuth warned.

Pope ends Holy Land tour urging ‘respect and love’

by DAniEL binns

POPE FRANCIS yesterday visited sacred sites for Jews and Muslims and kissed the hands of Holocaust survivors on the final day of his Holy Land tour. The pontiff started the day at the Dome of the Rock in Jerusalem, the third-holiest spot in Islam and known to Jews as the Temple Mount. It is central to the territorial and religious disputes between Israel and its Arab neighbours. There Francis said: ‘May we respect and love one another as brothers and sisters.’ The Argentinian also prayed at the city’s Western Wall and left a note with the text of the Our Father prayer written in his native Spanish in a crack between the stones. At the Yad Vashem Holocaust Memorial, the Pope prayed before a crypt containing victims’ ashes and laid a wreath of yellow and white flowers in the Hall of Remembrance. He also kissed the hands of Holocaust survivors as he heard of atrocities committed during World War II. Joseph Gottdenker told the Pope how he was saved by Roman Catho-

DOZENS of elderly Chinese people have committed suicide in order to beat an upcoming ban on burials. Anxious not to be cremated under new rules coming into force in central Anhui province, they have taken matters into their own hands. They include 97-year-old Wu Lixiu, who refused to eat and Zhang Wenying, 81, who hanged herself. Burials will be made illegal on Sunday – just two months after authorities announced the changes to save on cemetery space. One village elder said: ‘It’s hard for the old people to accept that they will have to consign their bodies for cremation. ‘The government should not carry out the policy at such short notice.’ Council officials have reportedly smashed up coffins at funeral parlours to ensure fewer are available for burials.

No hope for generations as battered voters crawl back to FF

an I express my utter apathy at media reports of so called unprecedented election results. To anyone who’s been voting for the past 30-odd years, it must surely come as no surprise to see the Irish voter tease their old flame Fianna Fáil by flirting with arch rivals Fine Gael-Labour for a term or two before realising their hearts really belong to Fianna Fáil after all. ‘Sure I know deep down FF really loves me, and despite their drinking and abuse, I’m sure they’ve learned their lesson this time.’ I doubt we’ll ever see any significant change in the Irish voter’s attitude to bring about real change, or at least not within my, great great, great, grandchildren’s time. Jim ■ Listening to the election results reminds me that the media is complicit in bankrupting the country and keeping it so. It cheerled the decisions which bankrupted the country during the boom and failed to tell the rest of us yobs the country was in danger of going bankrupt. The result was aus-

terity. The Irish media then cheer-led the anti-austerity campaign, and are now gloating at the success of their campaign in which the rest of us yobs are being hoodwinked again. The election winners want to spend more, despite the government spending billions more than it gets in taxes. Yet no warning from media. Hypocrisy and irresponsibility come to mind. A Leavy ■ Doc, I agree with you 100 per cent about throwing people off Dublin Bus/Luas for being smelly. If someone was being rude and offensive to the driver and other passengers, they would be asked to leave. as a paying customer, I find sitting in the company of people who stink of urine, BO, feet and dirty, unwashed clothes even more offensive. There is no excuse for an adult to stink this way. Go to the shop and buy a bar of soap, some pit spray and a toothbrush. Have some self respect, yiz mingers. I wish I could afford to park my car in town so I wouldn’t have to start my day wanting to puke into my Metro Herald. Marty

Taste Of Dublin director Avril Bannerton tells Metro Life about the events she is particularly looking forward at this year’s event

T

you can fit six people in each pod, I’d take full advantage and invite Michel Roux Jr, Ross Lewis, Derry Clarke, Kevin Thornton, Clodagh McKenna and Monica Galetti to join me for a tipple.

the new features this year really are something to whet the taste buds. can you elaborate on what guests can look forward to? This year it is our mission to embrace all things fun, family and food, with a Brazilian Carnival festival theme, and new offerings including The Bite Project, Salt Of The Earth Test Kitchen, The Fire Pit BBQ and the Icing On The Cake feature. I will also be making sure to stop by our official wine partner O’Briens. It is a testament to their commitment that they have been involved since the first year; I will be enjoying a nice glass of white wine at the end of a long day at the festival.

international chefs on this year’s lineup include Michel Roux Jr and Simon Hulstone. Who are you particularly keen on watching cook up a storm? We are excited to see Michel Roux Jr this year, as he is guaranteed to wow guests as he showcases his inspired French talents with live cooking demonstrations. There’s a real sense of excitement around his visit to Taste Of Dublin. Tom Kitchin is attending this year, which I think will be a real treat for the dedicated foodies of Dublin.

icket prices for this year’s taste Of Dublin, which start at €15, are down considerably on last year’s event. How do you see that impacting on visitor numbers? This year the focus is very much on value for money, so it means visitors have the opportunity to tailor the festival around a day and time that suits their budget. This year also sees a host of gourmet experiences, interactive demonstrations, entertainment, and many other ways of making your money stretch that little bit further.

Which restaurants are coming on board for the first time? This year we are delighted to welcome Brioche, one of the most innovative openings in Dublin this year, also Jerusalem Restaurant, the big brother of Little Jerusalem, and Marcels. We will be welcoming back Taste favourites Chapter One, Clodagh’s Kitchen, Rock Lobster, The Green Hen, The Chop House and many more. There really is something for everyone.

“It will be a real treat for the foodies of Dublin”

For a sophisticated get-together, visitors can take advantage of rotating garden pods with waiter service, courtesy of Podology. Which chefs at taste Of Dublin would you most like to share a pod with? We are really excited about the Podology experience where punters can sample a selection of wines from Rioja – it adds something really unique to the festival. As

As ever, visitors can trade cash for ‘florins’ at this year’s event in order to buy food. if you were down to your last five florins, at which restaurant would you spend it? There really is such an incredible line-up of restaurants this year – Rock Lobster, Il Primo, Chapter One, it’s too hard to choose. But I am really looking forward to the first time ever dessert bar by Chapter One’s Ross Lewis. Taste Of Dublin, Jun 12 to Jun 15, Iveagh Gardens D2. www.tasteofdublin.ie

Clodagh McKenna of Clodagh’s Restaurant will appear at the Electrolux Taste Theatre, Electrolux Chef Secrets and the Food & Wine Magazine’s chef skillery showcase in association with Applegreen Dream meal... Oh, most definitely my summer lamb cutlets marinated in fennel seeds and rosemary, served with honey-roasted nectarines. It’s on my dinner menu in Clodagh’s Kitchen, Blackrock... Culinary Blind Spot... Filo pastry, I just don’t have the patience. Secret ingredient? I don’t have any because when I find a great ingredient I can’t wait to share it on Twitter. My latest find is Highbank Orchard apple syrup, we use it in the restaurant instead of maple syrup – it’s made in County Kilkenny.

Derry Clarke of L’Ecrivain will appear at the Electrolux Taste Theatre Dream meal... Fresh Cod in crispy beer batter, chips tossed in sea salt and malt vinegar. Culinary blind spot... Howth! Secret ingredient... Smoked paprika.

O’Briens Fine Wines is the official sponsor for this year’s Taste Of Dublin. Marketing director Cora Jane Wynne tells Metro Life about this year’s offerings

O

’Briens have been Taste Of Dublin’s wine partners since the festival began. What have been your personal highlights over the years? There are so many, but what is a consistent highlight is all the fun we have with the visitors at the event. Rain, hail or shine they are always in great form and super-enthusiastic to try the wines and enjoy themselves. Our team love the buzz at Taste and the opportunity to interact with customers outside of our store environment. At this year’s event you’ll be hosting a ‘Champagne Taittinger’ bar. What can visitors expect and are deep pockets a pre-requisite? We are hosting the O’Briens Wine bar as well as the Champagne Taittinger bar. This is the only bar in Ireland where the limited edition 2014 FIFA World Cup Taittinger Brut Réserve can be purchased. Deep pockets are absolutely not a pre-requisite as we will be charging €50 to consume a bottle of this wine at the event, and for those on a tighter budget we will also have our favourite prosecco as well as a super selection of white and red wines. Which recent additions to the O’Briens Wine range have you found yourself particularly taken with? Our range is constantly evolving but at this time of year we release our rosé selection, that’s when I know summer has officially started in O’Briens. The one I’ll be drinking this weekend is L’Ostal Cazes Rosé – this Lynch-Bages owned beauty is from the Languedoc and is just brilliant, especially as it is buy one get the second half price at the moment. With BBQ season in full swing, which affordable, easy-drinking wines would you recommend for the occasion? My go-to BBQ wine is usually a Spanish red: Protocolo which is a perennial customer favourite for under €10. But a new range called Bellows Rock from South Africa whose Shiraz is €9.99 – down from €14.99 – for June is just fantastic and a must try for this summer. “What did the grape say when it got stepped on? Nothing, it just let out a little wine... ...I’ll get my coat” basics of wine appreciation, what advice would you give and is there a particular wine guide you’d recommend? I’d advise their first port of call be their local specialist wine shop, as you’ll find staff who are really passionate about wine, with incredible knowledge, who are well-paced to advise you on where to start. Most O’Briens stores do free tastings, especially at the weekends, so it’s a brilliant opportunity to try before you buy. Then taste, taste, taste at every opportunity. You won’t like everything you try but you will find out the styles and varieties you do like. Events like Taste of Dublin offer a fantastic opportunity to do lots of sampling too. Which essential kit should any selfrespecting wine lover have? A fantastic glass, a good cork screw and someone to enjoy it with. Which food/wine pairing is your idea of heaven? You cannot beat cured Italian and Spanish meat, a selection of cheese, some great bread and red wine. This is my death row meal. If you could crack open a magnum of Taittinger with the celebrity of your choice who would you plump for? Graham Norton, for lots of gossip and all of the laughs. What’s your favourite industry joke? What did the grape say when it got stepped on? Nothing – it just let out a little wine. I’ll get my coat…

Stuart O’Keeffe will appear at the Food & Wine Magazine’s Chef Skillery Showcase Dream meal... Steak Frites at Bouchon, a restaurant by Thomas Keller in Napa Valley. The ambience and the entire restaurant, in my opinion, is truly perfect. Thomas Keller has mastered the art of making incredible French cuisine in an unpretentious manner. Culinary blind spot... Of course, I’d like to think I can do everything but sushi is just not my area of expertise. I remember taking a class on it in culinary school but, honestly, I just leave it up to the experts. I really enjoy going out to eat it, so I kind of don’t want to know how to make it. Secret ingredient... It’s nothing too crazy, but I use Maldon Sea Salt to finish almost all of my dishes. It really enhances almost any flavour, and they also have a smoked version which is brilliant on chicken or fish.

Edward Hayden is a chef, food writer and lecturer and will demonstrate his skills at the Electrolux Taste Theatre Dream meal... I have to say I love the full Christmas dinner of oven-roasted turkey, sugarcrusted ham and all the trimming: sprouts, crispy roast potatoes and some delicious roast gravy juices. Culinary blind spot... I am not a fan of Chinese food but really love the classic Indian favourites. Secret ingredient:... I use a lot of my homemade sweet chilli jam in lots of my recipes. Whether I am making a marinade, some homemade burgers, a salad dressing or a stir-fry, I use it to add some extra oomph.

Matthew Vaughn (Kick-Ass, X-Men: First Class) delivers a glittery adaptation of Neil Gaiman’s comic book fantasy. A humble village lad (Charlie Cox) sets off to capture a falling star to impress his lady (Sienna Miller) and encounters Robert De Niro, Claire Danes and Michelle Pfeiffer en route. One for fans of The Princess Bride.

hen is a game about battling a nazi regime not about battling a nazi regime? When creators have to remove all references to the Third Reich. Players of Wolfenstein: The new Order in Germany – it’s the first time a console instalment from the shooter series has been released in that country – are facing a faceless enemy because video games are classed as toys there and nazi symbols are forbidden. There are no such censorship dramas for those outside Germany, though – and bashing the Boche isn’t the only thing on offer. The new Order takes on some serious storytelling, tackling racism, eugenics and homophobia to make sure we understand just why the nazis must be defeated, rather than simply painting swastikas and telling you to shoot. The game begins in an alternative 1960: hitler and co have won the war and the nazis rule the world. A small group of resistance fighters remain, in Berlin, of all places, and are seemingly the only remaining hope for toppling the regime. There’s a definite sci-fi theme aided by some Bmovie-style imagery, comic book villains and a creative director who has cited Quentin Tarantino as an influence. In short, you’ll still be grinning at how great it feels when a nazi head explodes. The new Order has been lauded as the best shooter in the series by far but it’s good to know the developers haven’t forgotten its roots by including references to 1992 classic Wolfenstein 3D. Cuiabá

About as far away from those Girl-From-Ipanema stereotypes as it gets in Brazil, Cuiabá (Coo-ya-bá) sits in the middle of South America, a gold-rush town 2,000km from the Atlantic and Pacific coasts. It’s the smallest of the 12 host cities and that’s no bad thing. If Brazil’s frenetic metropolises aren’t your thing, you will enjoy ambling around this overgrown cowboy town, while being perfectly positioned to explore the Chapada dos Guimarães National Park, the southern Amazon and the Pantanal – the world’s largest floodplain. The latter is more accessible than the Amazon, cheaper to visit and it’s easier to see the likes of anacondas, giant river otters (right) and howler monkeys. If you’ve come for the wildlife, it’s worth a visit.

belo Horizonte

Belo Horizonte (bello hoh-riz-on-chi) – or BH (Bay-agáh), as locals call it – the capital of Minas Gerais state, might lack Rio’s setting or São Paulo’s cultural clout but, set against the Curral mountains, it trumps its flashier neighbours when it comes to quality of life. England play Costa Rica in Belo Horizonte on June 24. After the match, head to the bars and clubs of the Savassi area and end your evening with a bag of pão de queijos (cheesebreads), a local Mineiro speciality. The next day, head to one of South America’s most impressive art collections, Inhotim (www.inhotim.org. br), an hour away. This 110-acre openair gallery features work from Anish Kapoor and Rio superstar Hélio Oiticica.

There’s more to see than football reCife

On Brazil’s east coast, Recife (heh-seefee) takes its name from the reef that flanks the city’s beaches. Brazilians will tell you this is the shark attack capital of the country (47 attacks in the area between 1992 and 2006). If you’re big on splashing around, you might want to head down the coast to the mini resort of Porto de Galinhas (below) with its spectacular blue lagoons. Not fussed about the beach? Venture north to the beautiful colonial Unesco world heritage town of Olinda, or stay put and check out Recife’s forró scene at Sala De Roboco (www.saladereboco. com.br). A local folk dance gone mainstream, forró is danced to the beat of the zabumba drum, which, while sounding like the next buzzy class at your gym, is testament to the region’s African heritage.

Patrick Welch visits four of brazil’s World Cup cities to dance forró, see wildlife and learn how to pronounce some pesky Portuguese phrases…

Curitiba Curitiba (cu-rit-chiba), in the south of the country, seems to have taken its cue from the Brazilian flag’s slogan of ‘Order and Progress’, with cycle lanes, a pedestrianised centre and the lowest urban air pollution rate in the country. Curitiba is one of Brazil’s most liveable cities and one that feels European on account of its fair-haired citizens and

their imported cuisines. It’s also cool in winter, so you’ll need a decent coat in July. If there’s one must-see, it has to be the Oscar Niemeyer museum (museuoscarniemeyer. org.br). You’ll find the late Brazilian architect’s buildings all over the country, but here, in addition to a changing programme of international art, the permanent show is the best way of getting to grips with the father of Brazilian architecture.

Out on his own: McIlroy after his victory

mcIlroy’s now pInIng to land another major RoRy McIlRoy believes his surprise PGA championship triumph proves he can win next month’s US open – even though it takes place on a course he has never visited. The 25-year-old is in high spirits after securing his first professional victory on European soil at Wentworth on Sunday thanks to a closing round of 66. McIlroy’s triumph was a remarkable climax to a week that started with him announcing he had called off his wedding to caroline Wozniacki. After turning off his phone and giving away his laptop, McIlroy sought sanctuary inside the ropes despite having missed the cut in his previous two appearances at the event.

6th McIlroy’s world ranking – up from tenth – after his Wentworth win ‘The win at the end of last year in Australia stopped all the questions about equipment and about struggling and a slump and all this stuff,’ said the former world No.1. ‘This victory, against a great field, one of the best fields of the year, cements that and shows I’m on the right track again. Hopefully it won’t be long before I’m contending in majors and having a chance to win those again.’ McIlroy will head to Pinehurst from June 12-15 having finished eighth in his last two majors, without really threatening to win either the 2013 US PGA championship or April’s Masters. The Northern Irishman admits he is in the dark about the course, having been a 16year-old amateur when New Zealand’s Michael campbell won the last US open staged there in 2005. ‘I can only go on what I’ve read and what I’ve heard because I’ve never been there,’ said McIlroy. ‘No rough for a US open is going to be very different. I hear it’s going to be a long golf course which I’m looking forward to. Getting a driver in the hand and a long golf course would suit me.’

u Shane Lowry, runner-up to Rory McIlroy at the PGA Championship, capped a great 48 hours by qualifying for next month’s US Open at Pinehurst. Rounds of 69 and 67 saw the Offaly man finish eight-under in the regional qualifier at Walton Heath.

Ward ready to take on ireland’s top-level test by pARAic MORgAn

Stephen Ward is relishing the chance to test himself against World Cup opposition as he targets qualification for euro 2016. the 28-year-old defender, who has spent the last season on loan at Sky Bet Championship Brighton from Wolves, has returned to the Ireland squad under new manager Martin O’neill this season after being discarded by predecessor Giovanni trapattoni. he started Sunday night’s 2-1 home defeat by turkey and will hope to retain his place as the degree of difficulty increases markedly over the next fortnight with friendlies against Italy, Costa Rica and portugal, all of whom are using the games as part of their preparations for the World Cup finals in Brazil. however, that is a challenge Ward insists he and his team-mates welcome as they look towards September’s opener qualifier in Georgia.

Rugby Ireland lock Donncha O’Callaghan is one of four players added to the Barbarians’ 24-man squad to face England on June 1. France flyhalf Francois TrinhDuc, South Africa second row Juandre Kruger and Argentina full-back Juan Martin Hernandez are among the other international heavyweights named in head coach Dean Ryan’s side at Twickenham. Nine nations are represented, with New Zealand boasting six players in the squad, while 19 men are set to wear the famous black and white hooped shirt for the first time in an experienced group that boasts a combined 730 international caps.

Froch, 36, beat his rival, 26, then but had to drag himself up from a first-round knockdown before stopping the Londoner in the ninth.

Bring it on: Defender Stephen Ward says the next two weeks’ friendlies against Italy, Costa Rica and Portugal will test mettle of Ireland’s players in preparation for the Euro 2016 qualifier in Georgia he said: ‘I feel we are getting very close. I think these next couple of weeks will be really vital for us in terms of getting to know how he wants us to play and getting the philosophy on board. ‘At the minute, we are playing a really attractive style of football. We are keeping the ball well and we are not just keeping it without purpose. ‘We are creating chances, getting the ball wide and getting the ball into the box.’ One of the main beneficiaries of O’neill’s approach is playmaker Wes hoolahan, a man whose treatment by trapattoni baffled his admirers.

the norwich man has started three of the four games of the Ulsterman’s reign to date and is revelling in the opportunity afforded him, even if results have not necessarily gone his side’s way. hoolahan said: ‘It’s lovely. It’s great to get on the pitch and hopefully show what I can do. ‘We are playing well. We are passing the ball well, we are creating a lot of chances. It’s not like we are not playing well – then you have something to worry about. But you are playing against a world-class team in turkey, they are welldrilled, so there were positives.’

‘You want to test yourself going into a tough group’ he said: ‘You want to test yourself and especially for us going into a tough qualifying group, you want to play against these teams. ‘people will look at it and say it might be tougher to get results, but sometimes you learn a lot more about yourself and the squad when you play against these top teams, and that’s what the management will think, especially going into a tough qualifying campaign. ‘the more they know about us, the better. You could maybe have chosen easier fixtures, but they want us to go in against these teams and they will definitely learn a lot about us in these next three weeks.’ Ward was part of the Ireland team which fared so poorly in the euro 2012 finals in poland and Ukraine as they slipped to successive defeats by Croatia, Spain and Italy, and a disappointing showing in the World Cup qualifying campaign subsequently cost trapattoni his job. Replacement O’neill is tying to put his stamp on the squad, and while a more expansive style is yet to pay dividends in terms of results, Ward believes significant progress is being made.

UrUgUay remains cautiously optimistic about Luis Suarez’s participation in the World Cup as the Liverpool striker continues his rehabilitation from a minor knee operation. The 27-year-old underwent keyhole surgery on Thursday to repair damage to the meniscus in his left knee, which immediately put his participation in Brazil in doubt. Uruguay would not rule-out the country’s all-time leading scorer of the tournament immediately after the procedure, and team doctor alberto Pan said there was nothing since to suggest they should change their opinion. ‘The core of the concept of his return was expressed in the

initial statement made in the immediate post-operative period and we can happily say that Luis’ participation in the World Cup is not ruled-out,’ Pan said. ‘It is very risky to give exact dates. We cannot have absolute certainty or clear numbers, but the post-operative period has been very good. Luis is not ruled out of the World (Cup), but you cannot talk about specific times. Luis is very positive, I never heard a negative expression, and he says it is better every day. Today (Suarez) is painless (and) is working on fitness and supporting essentials.’ Suarez will continue his rehabilitation away from the main squad, and national coach

Oscar Washington Tabarez said they would not rush him back. Uruguay plays Costa rica on June 15 before they face England in Sao Paolo four days later. ‘What happens with Luis will depend on the evolution of his knee,’ Tabarez said. In a statement last week the Uruguay Football association hinted that Suarez’s injury could have had its origin in a clash with Newcastle defender Paul Dummett in the final Premier League match of the season. That resulted in the defender receiving abuse from South america on social media, but Dr Pan said there was no definitive opinion on what had caused the problem.

Legend Lauda calls out ‘spoilt’ F1 duo F1 Niki Lauda has warned feuding Mercedes team-mates Lewis Hamilton and Nico Rosberg to again start behaving like ‘grown-up’ sportsmen, rather than spoilt children. Hamilton and Rosberg are currently not speaking to one another in the wake of a series of incidents that have led to a rapid disintegration in their relationship as they scrap for the Formula One world title. There was undeniable tension on the podium between the duo following Sunday’s Monaco Grand Prix, with neither man acknowledging the other despite a record-equalling fifth successive one-two for the team, spearheaded by Rosberg.

Mean, green, fighting machines for O’Shea by pARAic MORgAn

John o’Shea has urged Ireland to be more ruthless at both ends of the pitch if they are to qualify for the finals of Euro 2016. Martin o’neill’s men slipped to their second successive defeat at the Aviva Stadium on Sunday evening when Turkey emerged as 2-1 winners, just as Serbia had done in March. however, Ireland created more than enough chances to win the game, but ultimately paid for a combination of missed opportunities and defensive errors. Both o’neill and his captain for the night were able to take plenty of positives from the display, but know the failings in both attack and defence must be ironed out if they are to prosper when the competitive action starts in September. o’Shea said: ‘At the time they got their first goal, we had total control of the game and that’s something we are going to have to learn very quickly, especially taking the chances because at international level, I struggle to remember a game where we have had as many chances and we have and only come out with one goal, so that’s frustrating. ‘Look, I’d be more worried if we weren’t creating chances, that’s the big thing. When you are playing against teams like Serbia and Turkey and we have created as many chances as we have, there’s something going right. ‘Whether we need a bit of luck to fall our way, a decision to go our way… But we are creating the chances, and that’s the main thing. ‘We have to make sure our concentration levels are up and when we are in control of the game that we are shutting teams out as well and not giving them a sniff to counter-attack and score goals against us.’ Ireland were dominating the game when they were hit out of the blue by Ahmet Ilhan ozek’s fine 17thminute header, and had regained control once again when substitute osman Tarik Camdal extended the visitors’ lead with 14 minutes remaining. Jon Walters’ strike two minutes later gave Ireland hope, but it was all too little too late to leave he and his team-mates hugely frustrated. But there will be little time for o’neill’s players to dwell on that frustration as they turn their attention to a series of arguably even tougher tests with Italy waiting in the wings at Craven Cottage on Saturday and fellow World Cup finalists Costa Rica and Portugal to come in the United States early next month.

Asset: Boss is ‘fan’ of his ability

O’Neill says McGeady can improve

Frustrated: O’Shea says concentration is key for Ireland to capitalise on chances

martIn o’nEILL is convinced aiden mcGeady can become a major asset on the international stage. the 28-year-old Everton winger turned in an impressive first-half display in Sunday’s 2-1 friendly defeat by turkey at the aviva Stadium. mcGeady, who has not played much football since his January switch from Spartak moscow, was withdrawn halfway through the second half as his influence waned, but o’neill is confident there is more to come from a player he knows well from Celtic. he said: ‘aiden has not played much football in the last six months. I don’t want to be an apologist for him… I am a big fan of his ability. ‘he created some beautiful moments for us, but can go for a ten or 15-minute spell not in the game. ‘I think if he can iron that out, he will be an asset to us in all aspects of the game.’

Saints’ Pochettino talk of London town as Spurs rumours heat up

Serious business: Pochettino

Southampton boss mauricio pochettino is in advanced talks with tottenham to become the north London club’s next manager. pochettino has been linked with the role at Spurs for some time and it appears the wheels are now in motion for the argentinian to succeed tim Sherwood. Sherwood, appointed to replace andre Villas-Boas in December on

an 18-month contract, was sacked earlier this month after guiding tottenham to a sixth-place finish in the Barclays premier League. pochettino’s Southampton side ended up two places below tottenham in eighth. When he took over in January 2013, they had already made impressive progress in a short space of time. and that has continued under the

42-year-old, whose own reputation has grown considerably. Coming in as a relative unknown to English football, in what were widely regarded as controversial circumstances with regard to the dismissal of his predecessor nigel adkins, pochettino was soon making a name for himself as his team defeated manchester City, Liverpool and Chelsea towards the

end of the 2012/13 season. Southampton – only promoted to the premier League the previous summer – finished 14th that term and have bettered that in 2013/14 with a side full of English talent that has drawn plenty of plaudits. It has seen pochettino’s list of admirers increase and talk of tottenham among them has only intensified as time has gone on.
