There was heartbreak yesterday as it became clear whales from a pod that stranded twice on a beach in Donegal had little chance of survival. The 13 long-finned pilot whales first beached near Falcarragh on Sundayy night nigh and a group of about 100 locals managed to return nine to shallow waters. Four of those died on the beach. But a number of whales, most about 5m long, stranded a second time hours later further along the beach on Ballyness yness Bay. The Irish Whale and Dolphin Group said it is the 13th stranding in Donegal this year.
GARDAÍ believe a computer programmer whose body was discovered yesterday was murdered several days ago and buried under a pile of rocks in a quarry. A man known to 41-year-old victim Adrian Folan was being questioned by gardaí in Galway last night. Detectives are believed to be working on the theory he was driven to the remote location near the Cliffs of Moher and strangled. Mr Folan, origi- Murder: Adrian Folan nally from the Carraroe area of Connemara and described by friends as ‘very talented and extremely bright’, had been studying for an MSc in software engineering at Athlone IT. Gardaí had issued an appeal for information about Mr Folan’s whereabouts. He was last seen at about 11.40pm in Athlone last Thursday. Early yesterday morning, gardaí arrested a man in his 40s in Carraroe. A subsequent search of the quarry near Liscannor in Co Clare revealed his body ‘buried’ under the makeshift rock pile. But gardaí believe he was strangled before being left in the quarry. A dumping area on the Headford Road outside Galway city was also searched. Gardaí have appealed for witnesses who may have seen anything unusual near the quarry at Kilconnell, Liscannor, since July 3 to come forward.

Delevingne nowhere to be seen as her ex cosies up to screen hunk
Moving on: Michelle seems to have forgotten about Cara, seen together at a basketball game in January
Michelle and Zac haven’t a Cara in the world
Offshore passion: Michelle Rodriguez igue and Zac Efron share a kiss off the Sardinian coast pictures: Xposure/insight
by ANDREI HARMSWORTH
CIAO, Cara! It appears Michelle Rodriguez has moved on from the British model after being snapped snogging Zac Efron in Sardinia. The bisexual Fast & Furious star, who split with Delevingne last month, couldn’t hide her chemistry with the 26-year-old screen heartthrob as they smooched on a yacht near the resort of Porto Cervo. Rodriguez, 35, was clearly impressed by Efron’s athleticism as she filmed him performing backflips into the sea with
his businessman friend Gianluca Vacchi. Not to be outdone, the Texan beauty climbed the mast, although her antics left her new love interest a little nervous and he tried to talk her down. News of the blossoming romance may have come as a shock to their respective exes – Delevingne and Halston
Sage – as would the very public displays of affection. However, the 21-year-old model tried to remain philosophical yesterday as she posted a Buddha quote on Twitter, which included the line: ‘It is better to be alone than to be with those who will hinder your progress.’
Make a wish and throw the boss out of a plane
Skydiving: An adrenaline rush
IT MAY be something you have already considered but here is your chance to really throw your boss from a great height. In the name of charity, The Make-AWish Foundation is calling on people to nominate their manager for the Skydive4Wishes fundraising initiative. Make-A-Wish Toss Your Boss is a white-knuckle skydive that aims to raise much-needed funding for children aged three to 17 who suffer from lifethreatening medical conditions.
Taking place between August 16 and 17 at Abbeyshrule Aerodome, Co Longford, employees are encouraged to pitch in with sponsorship to see their head honcho take a well-deserved tumble from the sky. Susan O’Dwyer, chief executive of Make-A-Wish, said: ‘We are not only giving employees the chance to see their boss fly through the air from 10,000ft, but everyone who supports our skydive will be instrumental in granting wishes, providing respite for our wish children
from their normal routines of hospital, doctors and treatment.’ Paul Clarke of the Mercantile Hotel has already put himself forward, marking his 90th jump at the event. He said: ‘It’s an adrenaline rush. As this is the 90th jump, I wanted to mark this occasion by fundraising for MakeA-Wish as what they do is amazing.’ To get involved participants are being asked to raise a minimum of €520, which will cover the cost of the jump and the €260 donation.

Garth set to drop anchor on Croker shows
Brooks: ship threat
COUNTRY musician Garth Brooks is preparing to divert a ship containing equipment for his long-awaited comeback gigs in Dublin. In the latest twist in the saga, a meeting of city chiefs heard the US singer was about to cancel his return to the stage at Croke Park after alternative plans to hold
some of the five planned concerts at the Aviva were ‘logistically impossible’. As Dublin City Council debated its officials’ decision, Lord Mayor Christy Burke said he was told the ship left the US with material for the stage but Brooks was prepared to call it back if there are not five concerts lined up.
The Lord Mayor said ministers told him their hands were tied under law after local residents near the stadium successfully appealed to have the concerts cancelled and there was nothing they could do to intervene. A Brooks press conference is planned in the US for Thursday.

New register ‘will drive cowboys out of construction’ COWBOY builders could soon be a thing of the past after the launch of a new register for the Irish construction industry. Minister for the Environment Phil Hogan announced the new online facility yesterday, which will allow public procurement authorities, construction professionals and the public to search for ‘competent’ construction companies operating in Ireland. The aim of the Construction Industry Register Ireland (CIRI) is ‘to separate experienced, competent construction companies from those that have given the industry a bad name’ and was set up by the Construction Industry Federation (CIF). The minister said: ‘I have long been of the belief that we need to
by ORNA CuNNiNGHAM bring regulation to the Irish construction industry. ‘For too long we have had a situation in this country whereby anyone can pass themselves off as a builder or construction operative,

regardless of their experience and regardless of whether they were following the industry regulations. ‘Now we have a resource the public can use for free and which aims to separate those construction companies and builders who can meet the standards from those who don’t.’
Some 201 construction companies, sole traders and contractors are already listed on the CIRI register and another 565 are at various stages of the application process, with more than 2,000 entries expected by the end of 2015. All applicants must have ‘construction competence and experience’, be compliant with tax and obey all the latest building standards and regulations. CIF director general Tom Parlon said: ‘Up until now the names of everyone in the industry have been tarnished by those who do not follow the regulations and who do not carry out their work in the proper fashion. For the first time there will be a means of separating out legitimate, experienced operators from the rest.’

by PETER WOODMAN THE terrifying moment two passenger jets nearly crashed into each other at a busy international airport has been captured on film. The video shows a Boeing 767 operated by Russian airline Utair coming in to land on the runway at Barcelona’s El Prat airport. As it makes its final approach, an Aerolineas Argentineas Airbus A340 taxis across its path. Only last-minute action by the Utair crew, who abort their landing and climb sharply to pull their plane away, prevents a certain major disaster. The Boeing 767 performed what is known as a ‘go around’ and landed safely shortly afterwards. None of the passengers on either plane was hurt. The incident was caught on camera by aviation enthusiast Miguel Angel, who posted the video to YouTube. He described it as ‘one of the worst experiences I have ever had’. The deadliest ever air crash was in March, 1977, in thick fog at Tenerife airport when 583 people were killed when a KLM plane collided with a Pan Am flight on the runway. Spanish Airport Authority AENA said it has opened an investigation into what happened before the nearcollision, but said it had no details on how close the planes were at the time of the incident.

Sibling rivalry on a new scary level BROTHERS of sisters everywhere, take note – do not annoy girl siblings ever or you and all your possessions will live to regret it… This photograph, posted on Reddit, was taken by the mother of a girl who clearly has issues with her brother Ethan – she’s not happy with him and has plans, BIG PLANS, for after his departure. The girl will possess or destroy his belongings in the (ominous) event of him not being around anymore – two of which are selling his favourite Blackbear teddy to hammering ‘everything he loves’. Actual chills. We wonder how poor Ethan feels about this…

Cannabis for MS treatment CANNABIS could soon be available under prescription to Multiple Sclerosis (MS) sufferers. Speaking on RTÉ’s Today With Sean O’Rourke, CEO of the Health Products Regulatory Authority Pat O’Mahony said the Department of Health is to issue a revision to the legislation to allow the product on to the market. ‘[Cannabis] is very, very helpful, for [MS sufferers], for the muscle spasms that they suffer, which are a
big complication of that condition,’ he said. Changing the legislation has been ‘proposed for about four years’, he said, adding ‘Our role was to examine the scientific information presented with that product to make sure it can be safely used in Ireland. We finished our assessment some time ago. This is a very important step forward.’ Cannabis was brought on to the market in the UK four years ago.

THREE Israelis suspected of the killing of a Palestinian teenager who was abducted and burned to death last week have confessed, an Israeli official has said. The confessions come as violence continued on Israel’s front with the Gaza Strip. Last week, hours after they were buried, 16-yearold Mohammed Abu Khdeir was abducted from outside his east Jerusalem home, and his charred remains were found in a forest. His death triggered days of violent protests in Arab areas of Jerusalem and northern Israel. The suspects have not been identified, and remain in custody. Meanwhile, Israeli leader Benjamin Netanyahu has contacted the teenager’s father, Hussein, to express his condolences over his son’s ‘reprehensible’ murder.
Life sentence given to serial sex offender A SERIAL sex offender who used a false identity to open up a shop before sexually abusing a boy he hired to work there has been sentenced to life in prison. Mr Justice Paul Carney rejected professional opinions that the abuser could be dealt with by community sanction as ‘naïve’.
The abuser, 38, molested the 11-year-old victim systemically and regularly over a six-month period. The abuse took place in the registered sex offender’s bedsit at an address he had not disclosed to gardaí despite being required to so under the law. The Dublin man, who cannot be named to protect the identity

PASSENGER journeys with Irish Rail have risen 2.7 per cent year-on-year for the first half of 2014, new figures show – and it has One Direction to thank for that. The rail company said the increase, from 17.8million in the first six months of 2013, to 18.3million this year, is down to economic Gigs: 1D’s Niall Horan recovery, the success of online and other fare promotions and business from events like the One Direction concerts in the O2 and the Irish Open. There was growth in Intercity services (five per cent), commuter trains (3.6 per cent) and Darts (0.8 per cent). More growth is expected with the upcoming GAA season and festivals taking place over the summer.

€10 accumulator bet nets punter €5,000 ONE lucky Dublin punter is sitting pretty today after taking home almost €5,000 in winnings from a rather impressive forecast. The speculator placed a €10 accumulator on Stephen Bunting to win the BDO Darts World Championship, Real Madrid to claim Champions League glory,
Mark Selby to be crowned World Snooker champion and Novak Djokovic to take home the Wimbledon title. Perhaps even more incredible is the fact that the man’s selections were made months in advance on New Year’s Day, resulting in odds of just under 500/1 and a

Jake: It Buggs me that weed is still illegal J
AKE BUGG is being driven potty by the fact that he’s not allowed to legally smoke weed in his native Britain. The singer called on the UK government to legalise hash and make it ‘a normal thing’ after insisting it had done wonders for the state of Colorado in the US. ‘For me, yeah, it would be great but it’s not my decision,’ the 20-year-old told Guilty Pleasures. Sharing his socio-economic knowledge of life in America since the drug was legalised in some states, the 20year-old insisted: ‘I’m gonna go by evidence. Colorado have just legalised it and the crime rate has dropped. Jobs have also popped up as well.’ And it seems it’s not just the cannabis talking, as reports in Colorado say 61 per cent of people believe legalising the drug has made the state better. But he admitted there were down sides to having a few joints. ‘On the other hand marijuana affects people very differently,’ Bugg added. ‘It might chill one person out and it might make another person do the opposite.’

The former Brit Award nominee spoke out after fellow singer-songwriter Paolo Nutini, 27, recently admitted he was a regular smoker and defended One Direction’s ‘weed smoking’ video. ‘In our country it would take us maybe ten to 15 years to actually settle into it and for it to become a normal thing,’ Bugg said. Meanwhile, the busy Shangri La star gave fans an update on the progress of his third album in as many years. ‘People are thinking it’s too fast. Don’t do it too fast again,’ he explained. ‘When anyone finishes a project you’ve got to work on the next one, don’t you? It might take two or three years. ‘I don’t want to rush it out like the last one. I didn’t want to rush it out. It’s just the songs came. It’s all about when the songs come.’
Sweethearts: Ashton Kutcher and Mila Kunis
Mila Kunis swore she’d never say ‘I do’ before her teen sweetheart Ashton Kutcher came back into her life, made her pregnant and popped the question. The Black Swan star, 30, is now a wedding convert – though only a select few will see her walk down the aisle. ‘I never wanted to get married. From the age of 12, I prepared my parents for no marriage,’ she told W magazine. ‘Then things changed, I found the love of my life. Now my theory on weddings is: Don’t invite anyone. Do it privately and secretly.’ Kunis also admitted her 36-year-old fiancé was her first kiss when they starred in That ’70s show.

Kanye West says he is not a ‘belligerent a***hole’ after coming under fire for his 20-minute rants at the UK’s Wireless festival. The 37-year-old Yeezus star hit back as he headlined the final night of the music festival in Birmingham on Sunday. He told fans there that everyone had fun at the London shows. Sparing the Brummie crowd the ramblings he subjected Londoners to, he said: ‘It doesn’t matter what I say, from the top of my mind to the bottom of my heart, there is nothing they can do to stop me.’ He went on to the 64,000-strong audience: ‘The media wrote that people booed. And you know what. I’m not going to lie, I’m not invincible.’ West then confessed the reaction of his London fans did upset him. ‘It hurt me a little bit because I knew how much of a good time that everyone had. I’m sorry that I’m not a complete belligerent a***hole that I normally am, but I will be back,’ he finished. West saw hundreds walk out of his Finsbury Park performances on Friday and Saturday after he launched into diatribes about the fashion industry and his portrayal in the media. His speeches dragged on for up to 25 minutes and fans booed the star.

Beyoncé and Jay Z do their best to appear Drunk In Love on stage – after a subtle lyric change led to renewed rumours that their marriage is on the rocks. The superstar couple had arrived in Philadelphia to wagging tongues after Bey altered the words of her cheating track Resentment during an earlier show in cincinnati. Instead of ‘been ridin’ with you for six years. Why did I deserve to be treated this way?’ the star sang ‘12 years’ – the length of time she and her husband have been an item. The microscope on the couple’s marriage then zoomed in further when Lady Marmalade singer Mýa was forced to deny rumours that she had bedded Jay Z, 44. ‘I play second to no-one, pay my own bills, have my own label, own management company, rely on God only and respect myself & marriage too much for nonsense,’ the R&B hitmaker wrote on Instagram. Beyoncé smiled in apparent delight when Jay Z moved in for a kiss at the end of a rendition of Forever during the Philly stop-off of their joint on The Run tour. The 20-year-old, who tied the knot with hairdresser Craig Monk in November, told Guilty Pleasures she was in bad shape when the pair met in 2011. ‘It’s embarrassing how we met when I think about it,’ the Swagger Jagger singer said. ‘I went to a hair salon to get my hair done just after I got off The X Factor. I wanted to go for a cigarette but I couldn’t go out the front because it was swarmed with paparazzi. ‘I had a plastic bag over my head because I was getting my hair stripped so it was ginger at the time and I

I didn’t want to be pictured with a big spot on my face. ‘he was the only one who could take me out the back. So that’s where I met him – looking like that.’ But she was quick to point out who made the first move. Lloyd said she was initially worried about what Monk would make of her tattoos. ‘I remember he touched my arm saying, “Let’s have a look at your tattoos” but blatantly he was just touching my arm,’ she claimed. ‘I always say to him, “You weren’t looking at my tattoos. You were just looking at my arms”.’ her new album, Sirens, is out on July 20.

Barbie’s back and open for business W ‘C
OME on, Barbie – let’s go party!’ ‘Not now, Ken – I have a business to run.’ It’s hard work being the world’s most famous doll. Since she arrived in 1959, Barbie has had more than 150 jobs and made a success of them all, apart from her regular tilts at getting into the White House (she has run for US president six times without election). But now she has finally started working for herself with the launch of Entrepreneur Barbie. And what a varied CV she has. In the 1960s, she was a fashion designer, ballerina, flight attendant, nurse and tennis player within the space of two years. Stints as an astronaut, surgeon and Olympic skier fol-
business plan. Entrepreneur Barbie has also been criticised for her attire – but while she admittedly looks more budget airline hostess than CEO, pink has never been out of fashion as far as she’s concerned. ‘When we look at what career Barbie should take, we look at what is happening in society,’ says Ms Allen. ‘That’s why we selected entrepreneur.’ Mattel is running a campaign featuring the female founders of real companies, including Girls Who Code and Rent The Runway, alongside the launch of the new Barbie in the US.
At 55, Barbie has finally become her own boss. Following the launch of Entrepreneur Barbie, ROSS McGUINNESS asks if she really reflects the working world... lowed, before she caught the 1980s workout bug and became an aerobics instructor. More recently, she has been a rapper, news anchor and racing driver. But Entrepreneur Barbie still marks a big step for toymaker Mattel. While there was Business Executive Barbie in 1992 and Working Woman Barbie in 1999, this is the first time she has had her own company. But in what area? ‘Anything’s possible with Barbie,’ says Sarah Allen, PR manager at Mattel UK. ‘The whole thing about

Barbie is that she allows girls to live out their dreams. And when you’re five, every day you may decide you want a different career.’ Like any Barbie worth her salt, Entrepreneur Barbie comes with a host of accessories, including a smartphone, tablet and handbag. This has led some to criticise Mattel for implying that a few gadgets are all women need to get ahead in business – although, in fairness, it’s difficult to picture girls clamouring to play with Barbie’s ten-year
hile each Barbie does attempt to fit into the world around her – the entrepreneur version even has her own LinkedIn page – can we really expect her to reflect modern society? Earlier this year, a study by Oregon State University and the University of California showed playing with the dolls could restrict girls’ career choices. Four- to seven-year-old girls were given different toys to play with, before being asked what occupations they could do when they grew up. Those who played with Barbies said they could do fewer jobs than boys. Barbie is also in the midst of a financial slump – Mattel reported a 14 per cent quarterly drop in worldwide sales for the doll in April. Belinda Parmar, chief executive of Lady Geek, a campaigning agency that encourages more women to
enter the tech industry, is not impressed by the doll’s latest realisation. ‘I’ve never met an entrepreneur who matches her iPad to her outfit,’ she says. ‘I’d like to see her wearing a hoodie, frantically coding her next app while she drinks too many Americanos in a Hoxton cafe. ‘While Entrepreneur Barbie is less pernicious than 1992’s Teen Talk Barbie, which says ‘‘maths class is tough’’, brands like Mattel have missed an opportunity to create products that unashamedly celebrate real ambition among girls,’ adds Parmar. Besides, we are living in ‘the postdoll era’, she believes. ‘For my daughter, dolls are toys you find in museums,’ she adds. ‘I don’t think they are relevant to today’s kids. ‘Games like Minecraft teach analytical and logical thinking. A doll is a redundant prop that does little to stimulate the imagination.’ But Danielle Wightman-Stone, founder of the Fashionista Barbie blog, thinks the doll has always been an easy target for criticism. ‘Barbie is always going to be criticised for something, whether it is her figure, her flawless face or that her favourite colour is pink,’ she says. ‘A lot has been said about Barbie’s dimensions affecting girls’ body image – but can a doll really be the only thing that makes girls think about their weight? I was more influenced by the real women in my life than my favourite doll.’

Asylum boats turned around by Australian border patrols
AUSTRALIA has handed over a boatload of asylum seekers to Sri Lankan authorities in a transfer at sea. The incident has outraged human rights groups, who fear those on board could face persecution when they return to their home country. The 41 Sri Lankans were intercepted by Australia’s border patrol off the Cocos Islands in late June. Yesterday, they were handed over to the Sri Lankan government after their refugee claims were assessed at sea and rejected. For days, Australian immigration minister Scott Morrison had refused to comment on reports that officials had intercepted boats carrying around 200 Sri Lankan asylum seekers and handed them over to Sri Lankan authorities. In a bid to stem a rising tide of asylum
by cOn DOHERTy seekers, the conservative government has implemented a tough policy of turning back their boats. Among those leaving Sri Lanka are ethnic Tamils who survived a civil war between government troops and the now-defeated separatist Tamil Tiger rebels. Refugee advocates say Tamils still face violence from the military. ‘Some of these people will be handed straight back to danger,’ said Sarah Hanson-Young, immigration spokeswoman for the minor Greens party. The initial reports of a handover last week prompted the United Nations refugee agency, UNHCR, to express ‘profound concern’ that Australia was processing asylum seekers at sea rather than assessing them on land.

know everybody has been debating this for far too long now, but there is something that really annoys me about this whole Garth Brooks furore. Two things, actually. As a resident of Drumcondra who lives outside the gilded circle of residents who get benefits, but who still faces major disruption every time there’s a concert or GAA match on, I’m not in favour of this many concerts, but I do recognise the fact they would bring a lot of money to the area. what annoys me is that, firstly, the organisers/promoters knew the rules about how many concerts there could be at Croke Park, knew how many had already taken place, but went ahead and sold tickets anyway. This amounts to knowing the law, but ignoring it, with a ‘we will get our way because there is money involved’ attitude. Secondly, Mr Brooks weighs in playing hardball with this ‘all five shows or nothing’ stance, saying this is necessary because

he envisions a ‘five-day extravaganza’ for his fans. But wasn’t the original plan for only three shows? weren’t two more only added due to demand? So how did he have that five-show vision? Sounds like a bit of fiction there, no? And he makes more cash. Make no mistake folks, if the five shows go ahead the winners won’t be Croke Park residents, and it won’t be the fans. It won’t be the Irish economy, as some suggest. It Billy Ray Cyrus will be Garth Brooks. ■ Full Can Man, just as well you’re not a pundit because your research leaves a bit to be desired. Nibbling is the spice of life
‘Indians are always nibbling,’ says Meera Sodha in her new book Made In India, Cooked in Britain. Here, she urges us all to eat like an Indian…
PEA KACHORI
Pastry-encased cinnamon-spiced peas
These delicious balls of pea-green joy are an old Gujarati delicacy. They are often served at family functions because they’re easy to wolf down when no one is looking. They are best served on a bed of sharp, lime-pickled onions, alongside some mint and yoghurt chutney. A food processor is ideal to make the kachori mixture but if you don’t have one, you can use a pestle and mortar and a potato masher. Amazingly, pea kachori can be made almost entirely from items you’ll probably already have in the freezer and store cupboard.
Ingredients (makes 25)
For the filling: 4cm ginger, peeled and roughly chopped ♦ 2 fresh green chillies, roughly chopped (deseeded if you prefer less heat) ♦ 600g frozen petits pois or garden peas, defrosted ♦ rapeseed oil ♦ 1tsp mustard seeds ♦ 1¼tsp ground cinnamon ♦ 1¼tsp garam masala ♦ ½tsp ground turmeric ♦ 1¾tsp salt (or to taste) ♦ ½tsp chilli powder For the pastry: 300g plain white flour, plus extra to dust ♦ ½tsp salt ♦ 1½tbsp rapeseed oil ♦ 175ml hot water
Step 1 Preheat the oven to 180C
and lightly grease a tray with oil. Blitz the ginger and green chillies in a food processor or use a pestle and mortar. If using a food processor, remove the paste and set to one side. Briefly blitz the peas in the food processor or use a potato masher. Set aside. Step 2 Heat 3tbsp of oil in a frying pan on a medium heat then add the mustard seeds. When they start to crackle, add the ginger and chilli paste, stir-fry for a couple of minutes, then add the peas and cook for a further 5min. Step 3 Add the cinnamon, garam masala, turmeric, salt and chilli powder. Cook for 2min, or until there is little to no moisture left but the peas are still bright green. Transfer to a bowl and set aside. Step 4 To make the pastry, put the flour into a bowl, make a well in the middle and add the salt and oil.
Rub with your fingers until the flour resembles fine breadcrumbs. Pour in 120ml of the water and add the rest little by little, kneading it in until it feels nice and firm. Pour 1tsp of oil into your hands and pat the dough to keep it moist. Step 5 You will need a clean, floured surface, a bowl of flour and a rolling pin. Pinch off a blob of dough the size of a marshmallow. Dip it into the bowl of flour and roll out to a circle roughly 10cm in diameter (the size of the bottom of a mug). To speed things up, divide the dough into small balls before rolling and stuffing them. Step 6 Pop a heaped teaspoon of pea mixture in the middle of a dough circle and bring the sides of the pastry up tightly around the peas. Seal by pinching it closed then pinch off any excess pastry and roll the kachori into a ball. Then make the rest. The first one you make might look a bit odd, so mark it out for tasting when it comes out of the oven. Step 7 Roll the kachori balls around on the baking tray to coat them in the oil and bake for 20-30min, until golden brown.
LIME-PICKLED ONIONS
Something incredible happens when you add lime to onions. The acidity in the lime cuts through the onions to pickle and tame them. If you leave them for long enough, they’ll turn pink, brightening up any mealtime. They work particularly well with grilled meats, such as lamb kebabs with cumin and coriander.
Ingredients (serves 4)
2 medium red onions ♦ 6tbsp lime juice (around 3 limes) ♦ 1tsp salt Step 1 Peel the onions, then chop them in half and slice them finely. Layer the onions in a plastic tub and add the lime juice and salt. Mix thoroughly and leave to marinate in the fridge for at least an hour.
Step 2 Serve strained of its juices.
Keep leftovers in the fridge for two to three days.
MINT AND YOGHURT CHUTNEY
This classic cooling combination is so old, it makes the Taj Mahal look
young. It tastes great on garlic chicken chaat and lamb kebabs, and with pea kachori. Sometimes I vary this recipe by adding a finely chopped shallot or small onion, as it makes for a lovely sweet and crunchy dip for poppadoms and chapatti crisps. A good tip when making this chutney is that if you’re out of fresh mint, you could use a tablespoon of mint jelly instead – but drop the sugar. This recipe can easily be doubled or tripled, depending on what you want to use it for.
Ingredients (makes small jar)
5tbsp home-made or Greek yoghurt ♦ 20g fresh mint ♦ 1 fresh green chilli, deseeded and finely sliced ♦ 1tsp sugar ♦ Juice of ½ a lemon ♦ Pinch of salt
Step 1 Put the ingredients in a
blender and mix. Taste and adjust the seasoning and consistency by adding salt, sugar and water. Step 2 Eat straight away, or store in the fridge in a clean plastic or glass container, where it will keep for one to two days. Made In India, Cooked In Britain by Meera Sodha (Fig Tree) is out now.

The third and final season of the French policier that’s as dark and smoky as a Paris basement jazz club thick with the whiff of Gauloises signs off in typically brutal fashion. There are beatings, torturings and kidnappings at every turn as the twisted plot plays out – no wonder cop Eddy Caplan (Jean-Hugues Anglade) looks even moodier than usual.
hannibal
Sky Living, 10pm
It takes a psychopath to know a psychopath and, as this series has developed, it seems that Hannibal Lecter (Mads Mikkelsen) and Will Graham are like two peas in a diseased pod. Tonight, Graham (Hugh Dancy) has more of his freaky visions while tangling with killer Randall Tier – an encounter that results in a most peculiar dinner party.

penny dreadful
Sky Atlantic, 9pm
After last week’s gripping instalment, which saw Eva Green going though a very unmerry hell as the possessed Vanessa Ives, this final episode is the calm after the storm. With another series to come, don’t expect all the loose ends to be tied up as Sir Malcolm (Timothy Dalton, above) leads his ragbag of a team in a climactic pursuit of his missing daughter, Mina. There are a dozen stories going on at once here but somehow it works.
Baz Luhrmann made his international reputation for high-camp spectacle with this 1992 offering charting the travails of ballroom dancer Scott Hastings (Paul Mercurio). His unorthodox dance manoeuvres land him in hot water with the ballroom dancing authorities leaving Scott a pariah – his only option for finding a dance partner is frumpy newcomer Fran (Tara Morice.) Can the pair overcome their differences and triumph together?

Naomi Watts stars as CIA operative Valerie Plame in this based-on-real-events political thriller. In 2003, Plame found her cover blown by a press leak from the White House following her journalist husband’s article about the dodgy premise for the invasion of Iraq. Sean Penn plays her outraged husband, while Watts drives the action.

Another level: Destiny is the most expensive game ever made
THE big RELEAsE
HasHtag Dungeon (PC) Social media gets it in the neck for all sorts of reasons but it’s hard to imagine it being blamed for building a dungeon. Yet that’s the deal with Hashtag Dungeon, the PC title where you create levels for other players to tackle via the medium of Twitter. Using the game’s in-built editor, you create rooms and their geography, and choose from a selection of baddies to populate them. Once happy, you unleash your masterpiece on the world by tweeting it with hashtags, from where it can be picked up by other dungeon crawlers. Although
you can’t spawn your own enemies, bosses or traps, you can make suggestions that will be taken into consideration when indie developer Hitpoint Games rolls out promised updates. As far as the gameplay goes, whether you opt for dungeon explorer or master, the topdown challenge is fun and will bring a nostalgic tear to your eye if you were a fan of the original Legend Of Zelda. For more info, visit hashtagdungeon.com, which includes a five-minute demo video in case you haven’t quite made up your mind. JD
The €370million game
i
t’s enough to make Hollywood execs weep – the most expensive video game ever made is coming your way in two months, with a budget just shy of €370million. to put that into some kind of context, it’s about how much Peter Jackson is budgeted to spend on the entire Hobbit trilogy. the game is called Destiny, a multiplayer sci-fi shooter that’s the first in a series planned to last at least a decade. It carries with it the hopes of gameplayers of it becoming the first, real next-generation console smash. set in a post-apocalyptic future (where else?), mankind has claimed the solar system as its own, only for aliens to bust in on our patch and leave us teetering on the brink of extinction. At this point most people would call on Will smith and/or tom Cruise and, let’s be honest, it looks like the game’s creators can afford them. But instead, the task of salvation is yours. You’ll also have a little help from
Potty about speakers It looks as though it’s come straight off the Apple conveyer belt but this handmade wireless speaker represents a quite remarkable bridge between 400 years of British history and modern technology. It’s called the Beautiful sound by Josiah, and aside from all the usual techy bits that come with a device of this nature, it’s crafted from ceramic. the speaker is produced by artisans at the Potteries in stokeon-trent, using the same techniques seen fit for teapots and other crockery since the 17th century – and could prove an unlikely catalyst for reinvigorating a declining industry. Each speaker is cast, fired, glazed and fired again before being shipped for assembly
of the electronics. On board you get Bluetooth and NFC connectivity, an eight-hour rechargable battery, touch-
sensitive controls and a 10watt speaker with up to 100 decibels of noise. And that’s not all. the speaker has two cubby holes on the top that can be used for anything from potting plants to storing house keys. Meanwhile, the ‘picnic edition’ could be used to store and mix artists’ paints and comes with a gingham cloth speaker cover. the man responsible is designer Yair Neuman, working out of a start-up studio he’s founded that focuses on developing products that merge technology with surprising materials. the Beautiful sound picnic version can be yours from €470. For more information, head to milkster.com and you’ll find it listed on their homepage.

some friends – Destiny’s multiplayer element involves an ever-evolving storyline where you work alongside other online gamers with a comparable skill level and at a similar stage of the game. there’s also no lead character. Despite being out on september 9, pre-order data in the Us suggests it’s likely to still be No.1 come Christmas, which is no mean feat given a new Halo, Call Of Duty and Assassins Creed are all on the way. If you can’t wait that long then beta testing, encompassing most of the major game modes, begins on July 17 on Playstation 3 and 4, with Xbox access coming later. However, it’s only available if you’ve pre-ordered the full release and obtained an access code. Destiny also has a certain Paul McCartney composing the soundtrack and, with the series set to last a decade, it’s sure to be a long and winding road…

there’s life beyond Barcelona Venture out of the Catalonian capital and you’ll find the surrounding area has many other treasures to enjoy, writes Eva Landau
T
he long stretch of Catalonia that Spain recently rebranded as Costa Barcelona extends 100km along the Mediterranean – between Tarragona in the south and Girona up the coast – and it smells of sea and wine. Look to your left and you see mountains, carpeted green; to your right, there’s luminescent water, pitted with swimmers, their clothes rolled neatly on the sand. The famously proud Spanish want to show visitors there is far more to the region than just bustling Barcelona. Outside the city, those in the towns move slowly. We arrive in Sitges on a Sunday afternoon. When summer starts, this small seaside town – ‘the St Tropez of Spain’ – creaks open, empty but for the locals and builders reshaping the grand Cuban houses into hotels. Now it is bustling and noisy. We check into hotel San Sebastián Playa, a modern-ish place on the beach with microwaved food and free wi-fi, but if I return I’d search out one of the old renovated houses. Tiled to within an inch of their lives and family-run, their dusty charm is evident from a quick glance through a window.
In the morning, we take a walk. Along one of the 17 beaches, through the whitewashed streets, are houses with blue lines painted around the walls to show that fishermen once lived there. The wooden doors of Palau Maricel open into a leafy courtyard and upstairs, a combination of light and flowers is so exquisite, we have to have a sit down. This museum was the home of an American collector at the turn of the 20th century and it’s a monument to colour. Although today it’s officially used for meetings and the odd wedding, it has a breathtaking grandeur matched only by the view out to sea and the tapas an hour later. At Restaurant Pic Nic (set menu €32, restaurantpicnic.com), a stroll down the coast, they’re proud of their modern take on local food – asparagus served on ashes, things that explode on your tongue when you bite them.

things – its wine and its human towers. Yes, human towers – and in Vilafranca they take them very seriously. So seriously that, after 45 minutes walking through the town’s comprehensive wine museum, a well-priced seafood lunch at el Cigró d’Or (mains from €15, elcigrodor.com) and half an hour moseying around the church, it takes almost a whole afternoon in the headquarters of the Castellers de Vilafranca to learn that human towers (castells) are not just about climbing on your mate’s shoulders. They are competitive, they are creative, they are nondiscriminatory, they rely on careful science, on a knowledge of local history, on a tiny little helmet for the kid who has to wrestle to the top. And yet the whole time the team of climbers are talking so passionately, all I want is a YouTube clip of people falling in a pile. hotel Mastinell, in the nearby Penedès region, was built to resemble a wine rack. each room looks out on to the vineyard through a huge bottle-bottom window. Minutes from Barcelona itself is the beach town of Castelldefels, home to footballers, 5km of beaches and tans. This is the place for leisurely lunches and late-night bars, while those wanting culture make the short trip to the church of Colonia Güell. Built by Gaudi as a place of worship for the people who lived in this tiny workers’ suburb, it stands unfinished but magnificent among the trees, equally glorious
but far less grand than Palau Güell in Barcelona. Which is where we return to, leaving the coast behind us like a lovely hangover. SitgeS the St tropez of Spain and a real hotSpot for fieStaS
Although most associate Sitges with a huge international gay community, there is a lot more to the creamy coastal town than its loud and proud gay nightlife. Because it’s just 20 miles south of Barcelona, a direct train ride from the city centre, most Friday evenings it fills up with Catalonian weekenders and holidaymakers. Sitges likes a festival. Its biggest fiesta, the celebration of Mardi Gras in March (above), brings the town to a standstill as flamboyant parades full of colourful floats take over the small cobbled streets. Its pinnacle is The Debauchery Parade, which, as the name suggests, is an eye-opener. The next big party will take
place in August for the Feast of Sant Bartomeu or ‘Festa Major de Sitges’ (August 20-25, sitges-tourist-guide.com), which celebrates different Catalan traditions in its processions – oversized papier-mâché heads, crackling fireworks, human towers and stick dances. Autumn brings a more serious affair: the renowned film festival (October 3-12, sitgesfilmfestival. com) specialises in horror and fantasy films and attracts celebrities including Woody Harrelson, Elijah Wood and Charles Dance. It now draws more than 100,000 people, many of whom eagerly participate in the Zombie Walk and early Halloween parties. Lisa Scott
Tongue-tied in Salamanca Trying to brush up on her Spanish, Sheena Davitt found herself distracted by the beauty of Salamanca’s buildings and its great al fresco dining options
S
alamanca is one of those exceptional places that has so much to recommend it that it’s almost exasperating. and apparently it’s been like that for a long time. Once it became home to the country’s first university in the 12th century, it quickly blossomed into Spain’s educational and cultural powerhouse – a bit like Oxford but with decent weather and tapas. The town’s historic centre (it’s a Unesco heritage site) is so spectacular that you wonder how the students get any work done – you just want to wander around in circles taking in the architectural beauty of the Old and new cathedrals, the casa de las conchas and the university buildings (pictured below) over and over again. I think I visited the breathtaking 15th-century courtyard of the Escuelas menores about four times in the week I was there just to keep checking it was as good as I remembered. However, given that I was there as a student of sorts, I had to confine my sightseeing to the afternoons – my mornings were spent trying to brush up on my rusty old Español. Salamanca is a very popular
destination for those who want to learn Spanish in Spain – nestled among all the Renaissance universities are umpteen language academies. The scale of the town makes it perfect for language learners too – it’s small and friendly, and the locals are unbelievably tolerant of you practising on them. I took a short course at the Unamuno college close to the River Tormes. The small class covered lots of useful topics – I was in an intermediate level group, but the school caters for all levels, from absolute beginner up. Signing up for language classes is a great holiday option and means you get to meet people from all over the world. naturally, other students are a good source of restaurant and bar recommendations. and, especially if you are travelling alone, language schools are a great resource in terms of information and activities – they often offer day trips, which are well worth considering. The week of my visit coincided with the El Español Global (the International congress of Spanish) – an event attended by thousands of teachers, booksellers and language school owners. I was amazed by the

size of the event – having only ever experienced things from the student’s perspective, it was interesting to see just how huge an industry the language learning sector is. Outside of the classroom, Salamanca has plenty to keep you occupied. Food in particular is a major pleasure here. my favourite meal was a simple and economical lunch at Restaurante la luna on calle de libreros. In Spain, the menu del día is always a safe bet for a modestly priced but high quality three-course lunch: la luna’s was great – I had andalucian gazpacho and a wonderful hake followed by custard with cinnamon, all for €10. Tapas are another economical option – and there’s no skimping on quality if you go to the right place. The meson de Gonzalo in Plaza del Poeta Iglesias is one for the foodies. although it has a tempting dinner menu, their tapas sounded too good to ignore. I went for Galician octopus on toast; goats cheese with raspberries (a mouthwatering combination); and the pork tenderloin – each dish costing about €2 or €3.
I
n a town with so many magical small parks and shady corners, I also found myself eating al fresco quite often. Get a roll with delicious Iberico ham from one of the many delis and you can eat while taking in the calm of the gardens of calixto y melibea or the Plaza de colon or watch the tourists go by at the Plaza de anaya. But of course, the best place in town for people-watching is the Plaza mayor (pictured right). The locals will tell you the cafés here are overpriced – but really, don’t let it put you off. They’re not that pricey, and it’s simply worth it to sit in this amazing space. There are similar ‘plaza mayors’ at the heart of a lot of Spanish towns, but this one is finer than most – an 18th-century sandstone creation that manages to be both imposing and delicate. and amid the grandeur, there is a constant buzz of people coming and going and meeting under the clock tower, buying ice creams and strolling the arcades to dodge the

wimbledon ‘He believes in me’: Djokovic greets coach Boris Becker after his win over Roger Federer
Ferrari have announced Kimi Raikkonen will not take part in the twoday in-season test due to start today at Silverstone after his horrific accident in the British Grand Prix. Raikkonen sustained only bruising to his left ankle and knee despite suffering a 150mph, 47G impact into a metal guardrail on the opening lap. The Finn ran wide heading into turn five and as he returned to the track with the power still down, his car caught the lip of the circuit, sending him out of control. After impacting into the barrier, Raikkonen was also hit by Williams’ Felipe Massa and had to be helped from his car, limping away with a marshal.
Novak Djokovic’s Wimbledon title was not just the sweetest of his seven grand slam trophies, but also vindication of his decision to hire Boris Becker as head coach. Unlike Roger Federer, who hired stefan Edberg as a part-time adviser to work alongside regular coach severin Luthi, Djokovic made the three-time Wimbledon champion his main coach. Marian vajda, with whom Djokovic had won all his senior titles, would instead fill the role of part-time coach. Djokovic did not win a title until his first tournament with vajda in indian Wells in March, and two weeks later with the slovak in his corner after Becker had hip surgery. it was clear all was not entirely well when vajda accompanied the team to Rome, which had not been in the schedule, and Djokovic won the title again. it all fell into place as he defeated Federer in five sets. The 27-year-old admitted there had been difficulties, but said the tournament in Rome was the ‘turning point’ in his relationship with Boris. ‘There were a few things he said that were important but most of all is the mental toughness and the self belief. ‘He believes in my game, he knows that i have the game to win this tournament and i just needed to hang in there and stay tough regardless of what i go through on the court.’

door system. ‘It’s still wide open,’ maintained Mccaffrey. ‘I don’t think anyone is heading the pack at the moment. anyone that’s left in it will feel they have a great chance. Look at clare/Wexford, Tipp going through the qualifiers, Waterford even, you just never know what can happen. ‘I don’t think anyone’s really that far ahead of the pack. What I would say is that if you are going to win an all-Ire-
land or do well, you probably are going to have to beat Kilkenny along the way so hopefully we’ll get another crack. ‘Winning the Leinster final would have been great and you’d get into an all-Ireland semi-final. But it’s one extra game which is no harm either, getting another game. We know that anyone can win from the state that they’re in at the moment. It’s anyone’s all-Ireland and it’s up for grabs really.’ Last year’s Leinster title-winning skipper admitted it was a big blow losing so heavily to Kilkenny. a strong title defence was anticipated after a morale boosting semi-final win away to Wexford. But Dublin were second best throughout. ‘I don’t think there was any major pressure from outside, none that we felt anyway,’ said midfielder Mccaffrey. ‘But we wanted to give the performance and that’s unfortunately what we didn’t do. If we had done that, we would have had a great chance of winning. That’s what we were looking for from ourselves, to perform on the day and it didn’t happen. ‘That’s the annoying thing really. on other days, you’d say Kilkenny were miles ahead of us. They were good but I don’t think we did ourselves any justice at all.’

Skipper Luiz: I’ll lead Brazil into final game by MATTHEW nASH
DaviD Luiz is happy to take the responsibility of leading Brazil out in tonight’s crunch World Cup clash against Germany. as well as injured talisman Neymar, the hosts will be without another key player – captain Thiago Silva, who is suspended. Silva picked up a second booking of the tournament against Colombia on Friday and, although Brazil appealed against it, Fifa last night upheld the decision, meaning the Selecao captain will be banned and Luiz will lead his country out in the Estadio Mineirao this evening. Luiz, who left Chelsea for Paris Saint-Germain last month, is renowned for his madcap moments but takes the responsibility seriously. With around 200million Brazilians watching on, the 27-year-old is not afraid of the pressure that awaits him in Belo Horizonte.
No syringe benefits for crocked Neymar neyMar and the Brazilian Football Confederation (CBF) have denied reports the striker could receive special treatment on his fractured vertebra in a bid to try to play in the World Cup final, if Brazil make it that far. Doctors at his former club Santos were quoted as saying neymar could make the showpiece by having alternative treatments and pain-killing injections. However, the CBF said this would ‘put his future as an athlete at risk’. ‘i’m ready,’ Luiz said. ‘i’m vice-captain and this group is very easy to handle because everyone’s very down to earth. it won’t be a tough job at all.’ Luiz has the full support of his team-mate Hulk. ‘He’s just the best,’ said the zenit St Petersburg forward. ‘He’s very caring and very attentive, no matter who he’s with. it’s not every day you come across someone like him.’ Germany coach Joachim Low, meanwhile, warned the hosts his side will mean business. ‘i’m looking forward to it so much and everybody in the squad is too,’ he said. ‘i think all Germans are also, and one thing’s for sure – we desperately want to play in the Maracana in Rio again. On July 13. We’re not done yet.’
Semi-final briefing: Brazil v Germany
kEY BATTLE:
Hulk v Thomas Muller BraZIl are desperate for a star name to fill the void left by neymar’s absence and Hulk fits the bill perfectly. like the fictional superhero, the Zenit St Petersburg striker has the ability to burst on to the big stage and wreak havoc. He may have been prolific for the russian club and previous side Porto, but he has managed just nine goals in 39 Brazil appearances – and none so far in the World Cup. In contrast, Muller has already scored four times in the tournament from his attacking midfield position, as well as unselfishly setting up his team-mates to have a crack at the target.
10 Goals scored by both teams in their five matches so far
The bosses:

BIG Phil perhaps won a ‘get out of jail free’ card with neymar’s injury and Thiago Silva’s suspension ruling them out of the semi-final. Scolari, who took Portugal to the last four in 2006, has done well to get his team playing as a unit but he now faces a shrewd operator in the German coach. low reached the semi-finals four years ago and, with both men hoping to go one better, a classic clash on the pitch may be matched by the battle of minds on the sidelines.

SERGIO AGUERO has given Argentina a huge lift after being declared fit to face Holland in tomorrow’s World Cup semi-final in Sao Paulo. It was feared the thigh injury the Manchester City striker suffered in the group stages would end his tournament but officials say Aguero has made an ‘excellent’ recovery. ‘Sergio has practised three times –he’s ready to play,’ team doctor Daniel Martinez revealed. Juve put Turin brakes on Sanchez to Arsenal
Alexis sAnchez’s expected move from Barcelona to Arsenal has been complicated after Juventus expressed an interest in signing the chile star. The Gunners had been battling it out with liverpool for the 25-year-old, although sanchez is not thought to be keen on a Merseyside move. But with Juve joining the fray, sanchez is now torn between Turin and north london. The italian champions, however, are still some way off Barca’s valuation, and may not be able to match Arsenal’s financial clout without selling Paul Pogba, who is being chased by chelsea, or Arturo Vidal. Barca, meanwhile, gave little away on sanchez or luis suarez’s proposed transfer from Anfield to the nou camp as they unveiled chile goalkeeper claudio Bravo yesterday. sporting director Andoni zubizarreta said: ‘There is nothing new to report.’
