Matinee idle: Garth rejects Council offer
MENDES SEEMS EVA SO SHY OVER Deal agreed for five gigs in three days, but Brooks says NO BABY BUM P
FRESH hopes for Garth Brooks to play in Ireland were in disarray last night as the country music star rejected a compromise over his five-night comeback in Croke Park. Just three hours earlier Brooks had said he would do whatever it takes to put on the concerts, including ‘crawling, swimming or flying’ to meet Taoiseach Enda Kenny and ‘dropping to his knees and begging for those 400,000 people to just have fun’. But later the US singer dis-

missed an offer of playing three night and two matinees, saying it ‘cannot possibly compare’ to five night gigs. His publicist Nancy Seltzer said to treat 160,000 people differently than the other concert-goers is ‘wrong’. Promoters Aiken and Dublin city planners reached a compromise yesterday following Brooks’ description of Ireland’s licensing system as ‘flawed’ at a Nashville press conference.
‘Flawed’ comments: Brooks However despite the singer’s insistence on five shows or nothing, he has not turned back the ships bringing over the ‘mon-
strous’ stage and set, requiring 17 days of loading. In an increasingly bizarre debate, Lord Mayor Christy Burke had suggested Croke Park residents approach US president Barack Obama to try to break the impasse, but this was dismissed by the US Embassy in Dublin. When the issue was raised in the Dáil for a second day Ceann Comhairle Sean Barrett said: ‘Please refrain from making a joke of the whole thing.’

Pop brat avoids jail but his luxury hollywood life hangs on thread
Could Biebs be facing a US egg-sit? JUSTIN BIEBER has been spared jail for pelting eggs at his neighbour’s house – but he could be a step closer to being kicked out of the US. The Canadian was fined €60,000, placed on two years’ probation and ordered to take anger management classes after he pleaded no contest to the delinquent episode. He was not at the Superior Court hearing in Van Nuys, California, where a plea deal was struck to avoid prison time. A spokesman for the 20-yearold said: ‘Justin is glad to get this matter resolved and behind him.’ Bieber was caught on camera causing ‘an incredible amount of damage’ to the property in Calabasas, California, in January. But the star is not out of the dog
The Iron Throne? We want a gold statue FANTASY hit Game Of Thrones leads the way at the Primetime Emmy Awards with 19 nominations. The US show scored the most nods when the shortlist was announced yesterday. It is up against Breaking Bad, Downton Abbey, House Of Cards, Mad Men and True Detective for best drama series. Stars Peter Dinklage, 45, and 40-year-old Lena Headey are also up for supporting actor gongs. Hot on the heels of Game Of Thrones is Fargo with 18 nominations and American Horror Story: Coven, with 17. Foot amputee gets pre-operation kicks
Saw it coming: Joe concocted humorous scenes depicting his leg being chopped off, even going so far as getting a ‘cut here’ tattoo, which his surgeon then did (right)
JOE PlEban is an extreme sportsman, but he also has a rare bone and joint disease, which has stopped him doing the sports he loves. The disease causes recurring tumours in his ankle and doctors told Joe only an amputation would allow him to return to his previously extreme lifestyle. The 23-year-old from Fredricksburg in the US decided to follow their advice and get jumping, snowboarding and diving again – but he wasn’t going to send his foot off without a little ceremony. He said: ‘It took me a little while to get past the emotional hurdles. as a way to come to terms with
what was happening, I decided to capture the journey in pictures.’ So the jovial lad made a humorous farewell album to his foot on Facebook, photographing it on adventures such as jumping from a plane, attending rock concerts, back-flipping into water and going paintballing. He even got a funny tattoo marking where the foot would come off that said ‘Cut here’. Joe has now had his amputation and is in recovery. ‘although taking my ankle away was a big sacrifice, the change to regain the ability to play those sports again meant it it was a no-brainer,’ he said.

State’s GP policy is in ‘disarray’
THE Irish Medical Organisation has said Government policy in relation to GPs is ‘in disarray’. The IMO was responding to comments Taoiseach Enda Kenny made promising free GP visit cards for over-70s. It added there is an ‘urgent need to tackle the crisis facing GPs who are trying to cope with increasing workloads and decreasing resources’. The IMO will seek an ‘urgent meeting with the Minister for Health’ to clarify the State’s policy, IMO Committee chairman Dr Ray Walley said.

Céilí banned: No Tedfest for exam failures by NiCk BRAMHiLL
PLANS to stage Tedfest – the cult festival homage to comedy Father Ted – in London tomorrow proved a headache for organisers after young Irish members of a céilí band were banned from travelling to the English capital by their parents for flunking their exams. The madcap event, which takes place in the Aran Islands every February, is being held in the London Irish Centre in Camden for the first time tomorrow, a one-day event forming part of the London Irish Comedy Festival. Organiser Peter Phillips said everything had been running smoothly in the run-up to the one-off event until he received word that the three teenage members of the Inishmore islandbased Craggy Island Céilí Band had been grounded. He said: ‘You really couldn’t make it up. The Craggy Island Céilí Band play Tedfest every February on Inish-

The youngsters had been looking forward to coming over to London, but it turns out they didn’t do too well in their exams and they’ve been told they have to pull out. ‘The lads all wanted to come over, but their mammies are going mad and are making them stay at home until they’ve taken their re-sits.’ Despite the setback, Tedfest London looks set to be a success, with all 500 tickets already sold out. Tedfest London will feature the usual colourful events, including Ted’s Got Talent, The Lovely Girls’ Contest, The Toilet Duck Award and even a World Cup-themed Craggy Cup.

Speed cameras working so well fines don’t meet cost
by BRiAn HuTTOn
Ireland tops baby boom charts in EU IRELAND has the highest birth rate among the European Union countries, a recently published EU report reveals. According to this year’s first population estimates, Ireland tops the list with 15 births per 1,000 head of capita, ahead of France (12.3), the UK (12.2), Sweden (11.8) and Luxembourg (11.3) in the baby booming stakes. The report details that there were approximately 30,000 deaths here last year – second lowest after Cyprus – while 68,900 babies were born, contributing to an overall increase in the nation’s population.
‘Social decline’ to blame for murders

SPEED cameras around the country’s roads are so effective they cannot pay for themselves, the Garda chief has claimed. The privately-operated GoSafe mobile camera vans will cost the taxpayer €12million more than expected this year. Asked how Garda bosses got their figures so wrong, acting force chief Noirín O’Sullivan said the road safety cameras were so good at deterring motorists from speeding that the number of fines are a lot lower than forecast. It was planned that the money raised from fixed penalties resulting from detections would pay for the system, introduced in 2009. ‘In terms of saving lives, it is very difficult to speak about any loss of life or serious injury in monetary terms,’ said Ms O’Sullivan. ‘The objective was always to reduce speed-related collisions and as a consequence to ensure less lives were lost.’ When it was set up, Garda chiefs were working on the assumption that half of all motorists would comply with speed limits – based on international comparisons – but 86 per cent actually do obey the law at speed camera locations.
ORANGE IS THE NEW BLACK: An enormous unlit bonfire on the Shankill Road area in West Belfast stands ready to be set alight at midnight tonight as Loyalists prepare to celebrate July 12, remembering the defeat of the Catholic King James by the Protestant William of Orange in 1690
IRELAND is becoming a more violent place to live, Acting Garda Commissioner Nóirín O’Sullivan has said, adding that a soaring murder rate could not be blamed on organised crime but on a general decline in society. ‘The increase in homicides is not attributable to organised crime but is certainly attributable to more of a propensity to violence,’ she said. Some 60 people were murdered in the year to March 2014, up 36 per cent, with the Garda chief citing a rise in the number of murders committed in the home.

The scratch denim look
Zoo’s lions custom rip jeans for the catwalk by DOMINIC YEATMAN
IF YOU’RE hoping ripped denim might lend you a certain animal attraction, we have the perfect brand for you. A zoo is tossing pairs of jeans into its lion, tiger and bear enclosures, and selling the mauled results to the public. Marketed as ‘the only jeans on Earth designed by dangerous animals’, you can be assured no two pairs are alike. ‘People like them because they have been created with pure animal instinct,’ said Aya Miyashita, of fashion company Zoo, which came up with the idea. Zookeepers tie denim to an old tyre and give it to the animals to ‘play’ with. The ‘distressed’ fabric is retrieved and knocked into shape, complete with artfully placed puncture marks straight from the horse’s, sorry, carnivore’s mouth. Sources at the Kamine Zoo, in Hitachi, Japan, say lions and tigers get their teeth into their role, while bears tend to produce a more laid-back look. If you’re thinking this is the first time zoo animals have been asked to pay for their bed and board you’d be wrong. Congo, a painting chimpanzee at London Zoo, counted Pablo Picasso among his fans, and his work still sells for thousands some 40 years after his death. The first three pairs of jeans will be sold at an auction on July 21, with profits to be split between the zoo and the World Wildlife Fund.
Rifts appear in Ukraine rebel ranks
DIVISIONS emerged yesterday in the ranks of Ukraine’s pro-Russia insurgents, as dozens of militants turned in their weapons. Government troops have halved the amount of territory held by the rebels in the past two weeks. Signs of a rift within the rebellion emerged after the Vostok battalion chief said he would not submit to the command of Igor Girkin, or Strelkov, the leader of the separatist Donetsk People’s Republic. Meanwhile, dozens of fighters in Donetsk abandoned weapons yesterday, with one soldier Oleg saying: ‘Russia abandoned us. The leadership is bickering. They promise us money but don’t pay it. What’s the point of fighting?’ However Alexander Boroday, Donetsk People’s Republic’s prime minister dismissed talk of infighting as ‘lies and disinformation.’

I tried to call them but getting an answer was impossible,’ he said. ‘Fortunately, I was able to purchase a piece of the original set, which I pulled apart to find out the exact paint and materials that were used – that’s how I created the basement.’ And,

although it may seem illogical to many, the grand scheme has the support of Mr Sforza’s wife, Annette, 46. She said: ‘I think it’s wonderful, I admire him so much for being able to put vision into something like this and for it to look so incredible – it’s wonderful and I’m so proud of him.’ Their two sons, Daniel, aged seven, and Michael, aged 11, also love the addition to their home in Long Island, New York. Daniel said: ‘I think it’s cool because he has all the belts and badges and everything is here to show just how much he loves Star Trek.’ Michael may even follow in his father’s footsteps. ‘I would love to do something like this when I’m older,’ he added. ‘It would be pretty cool and it would be a good addition to any home.’
Wife finds out from Twitter of husband’s death Torn apart: Jorge Lopez embraces wife Veronica Brunati, right, who learned of his death in a car crash via tweets
Dublin
CIMA Courses Commencing from August in Dublin
A WIFE found out her journalist husband had died at the World Cup in Brazil when a top football manager tweeted his condolences. Veronica Brunati was staying in São Paulo with Jorge ‘El Topo’ Lopez but was not at the Argentinian’s side when he was killed in a car crash. Before authorities had informed her, she read the tweet from Athletico Madrid boss Diego Simeone, 44. The former Argentina star – currently manager of Atletico Madrid – wrote: ‘He was not only a great journalist, he was also a friend. Much pain. My condolences to @verobrunati and
family. RIP Jorge ‘Topo’ Lopez.’ Ms Brunati, also a journalist, replied: ‘No. Diego, don’t tell me that. Please, someone call me.’ Mr Lopez, who was a father, had been working in Brazil for Spanish newspaper AS when the taxi he was riding in was hit by a stolen car that
was being chased by police. The cabbie suffered an injured shoulder and the three people in the other car were unhurt. They were arrested at the scene on Wednesday. Argentina striker Lionel Messi dedicated his side’s win that night to Mr Lopez.

A CHEF has been convicted of raping a young woman after inviting her back to his apartment, pretending to be gay. Samir Mansour, 48, had pleaded not guilty to raping the woman at his then apartment at Windmill Hill, Dublin Road, Mullingar in 2010. The Court of Criminal Appeal had ordered a re-trial after finding questions asked by a previous jury had rendered the outcome unsafe. The court heard the victim had gone to a nightclub where she met Mansour, of The Lock, Market Point, Mullingar. She said she told him she was gay and he told her he was too before inviting her to his apartment for a party. However, after no-one else arrived, Mansour forced her into the bedroom where he raped her. Mr Justice Barry White is to sentence the man on Monday.
A WOMAN who harassed the wife of a former colleague by sending her hundreds of offensive texts, calls and tweets has been remanded in custody after she tweeted about her victim. Gráinne O’Toole, 41, of Willow Park Grove, Glasnevin, has been diagnosed with autism and obsessive persecution delusions but is currently undergoing treatment. She pleaded guilty at Dublin Circuit Criminal Court to harassment of Jennifer Doran between October 1, 2011 and February 2, 2012. The court heard she made over 310 abusive and threatening phone contacts by mobile and landline to Ms Doran, sometimes up to 35 times a day.

egarding Brazil getting thrashed 7-1 in the World Cup by germany on Tuesday, i never thought i would see a Brazilian football team being beaten so comprehensively. So where now for Brazilian football, and what of the massive investment in promoting these games? it’s not the millionaire footballers who are going to pay the bill – most of them are safely tucked away in their european mansions, far away from the street children of Brazil. While Brazil were still in the competition, there was a feel-good factor about the World Cup. now they are out, it’s time for a long hard look at the financial implications and social impact of this humiliating defeat. Sensitive performance: Over the 12 years that the movie was shot, actor Ellar Coltrane, as Mason, was a natural in front of Richard Linklater’s camera
Growing pains raise a smile
Most films take weeks or months to make – this remarkable drama took 12 years. Writer-director Richard Linklater made the bold decision to film the same child actor, Ellar Coltrane, as he grew up, weaving his development into a story about a fictional family. the results are fascinating. We first meet Mason (Coltrane) when he’s six and drop into his life every year or so, up to the age of 18. there are dramas involving his estranged parents: his mother (Patricia Arquette) dates unsuitable men,

he has fallouts with his father (Ethan Hawke). But – as with Linklater’s Before sunrise series – this is more about observing the details of life and human interaction, and noting how we change over the years. Mason grows from sulky kid to arty teen before our eyes, like a timelapse film of a blossoming flower. Luckily, Coltrane remains a natural in front of the camera, giving a sensitive performance as his character deals with school, stepdads, girlfriends and life choices. Not only do we witness a child growing up but we see Arquette and Hawke morph into the actors they are today. Arquette puts in a sympathetic
turn as the witty, intelligent, busy mother, her main weakness being her taste in men. Hawke is terrific as the likeable slacker dad. While their characters are forced to compromise their youthful idealism in response to life’s practical demands, they still make unwise choices. But Linklater approaches his characters’ flaws with affection and humour. there are plenty of laughs, not least from Linklater’s own daughter Lorelei as Mason’s sister, who’s a scream in her first scene, driving her onscreen brother mad with a Britney spears impression. It’s moments like this that will make Boyhood resonate, jogging memories and raising a smile. the film leaves you with a poignant sense of your own mortality, not to mention astonishment that it’s 166 minutes long. A romantic demo on the streets begin AgAin (15) HHHH✩ Keira Knightley plays a singersongwriter in this charming musical from Dublin director John Carney (Once). She’s Greta, a Brit in New York who’s persuaded to strum her guitar on an open-mic night. Listening, drunkenly, is Dan (Mark ruffalo), a record producer who’s fallen on hard times. Cash-strapped, they decide to record a demo on the streets of Manhattan, calling in favours and enlisting passing children as backing singers. it’s a fun scenario that side-steps sentimentality with sharp wit. Dan’s

chaotic, booze-fuelled existence brings laughs and Greta is always ready to cut him to the quick. Performances are strong from the leads, as well as Hailee Steinfeld as Dan’s daughter, Catherine Keener as his ex-wife and James Corden as Greta’s friend. Maroon 5’s adam Levine fares less well as Greta’s on-off pop-star boyfriend but his story arc has plenty to say about the music industry. This takes a critical look at the biz but it does so with a cheery smile and a suggestion that there may be a better way. it’s idealistic – some might say unrealistic – but appealing. and what of romance? refreshingly, Begin again keeps you guessing. Leggy blonde damsel in distress: Tessa (Nicola Peltz) on the run
More from the machines The fourth (yes, fourth) in the noisy action series stars Mark Wahlberg as Cade Yeager, a protective single father and inventor (well, it’s slightly more convincing than the science teacher he played in The Happening). Cade stumbles on an injured Transformer and helps it out. The government isn’t too keen on Transformers after the last battle, so Cade is soon on the run from the FBI with his 17-yearold daughter, Tessa (leggy blonde Nicola Peltz), her speed racer boyfriend Shane (Irish actor and Life Weekend cover boy Jack Reynor) and a bunch of alien robots.
TrAnsformers: Age of exTincTion 3d (12A) HH✩✩✩ As usual, the effects outshine the dialogue and characters by a long way. While Stanley Tucci manages to wring a few laughs out of the script as a billionaire who grows a conscience, other actors are underused, including Sophia Myles as a scientist. But then Transformers has always been about the explosions, the car chases, the fighting machines, the sexy girls. It’s a case of more of the same for your archetypal teenage boy with a short attention span. As

It may sound like an infernal howl to some, but there are few more evocative sounds than bagpipes picking up a full head of steam. The sound of the pipes had been used to stir Scottish troops in battle for centuries, but this touching report focuses on the pipers who served in World War I, often sent out unarmed – aside from their pipes – to face German artillery fire head on. Unsurprisingly, they had to pay a heavy price for their bravery.

Alas, this was often credited to their visionary frontman Max Cavalera, who left in 1997 to form Soulfly after the groove-led (but still fairly crushing) Roots LP, Sepultura’s biggest hit to date. Cavalera’s post-Sepultura spin-off band
have become stalwarts in their own right and Soulfly fans will know what to expect by now: expertly shredded riffs and raging vocals. Debuting in 1998 with an album dedicated to Max’s murdered stepson, the band are yet to release a bad record. Ear-splittingly loud, Soulfly can still convey the subtleties that exist on their records when they play live. Expect plenty of raging and grunting but also a lot of skill when they rock Whelan’s tonight. Siobhán Murphy Tonight, Whelan’s, 25 Wexford Street D2, 8pm, €24. Tel: 1890 200 078. www.whelanslive.com

I’m a big fan of Italo-disco, the peculiar strand of disco that came out of Italy in the 1980s. This is a sci-fi squiggly tune from 1984 from two Milan brothers. So catchy, so cool.

Comedian CHELsEA HAnDLER, 39, hosts E! chat show Chelsea Lately. She’s about to hit Dublin to regale us with some of her travelling mishaps This is the first time you’ll have toured Europe. Are you nervous? No, I’m more excited
than nervous. Excitement is preferable to nerves. I’ve been on the road doing this set for three months and it’s still fun and new to me, which is why I wanted to come here now. If I did it after six months, doing the same material, it would be like – urgh, the sound of my own voice would drive me mad.
Are you going to do any crowdworking – get to know us a bit? I don’t know – I never
over-plan. Sometimes I do, sometimes I don’t. It depends, sometimes not everyone can see or hear the person you’re crowdworking.
How would you describe your stand-up style to people who don’t know you? Oh, it’s just me permanently taking the p*** out of myself.
What are you going to miss about the US when you’re here?
have no idea who it was. It could have been Alan Carr. Or Graham Norton.
by yOukyung LEE
up the Dub
Is it true you’re going to end Chelsea Lately next month because you’re sick of celebs? Yeah, that’s one reason.
I’m done with that. I just outgrew it. It’s like being with the same man for seven years. I’m moving to Netflix to do a new late-night show, starting in 2016. I knew I had to do something outside the box to keep myself interested if I was going to continue working in this industry.
Which celebrities do you like? The one who made me laugh
the most was Will Ferrell – he’s just my favourite guest of all time. He makes me laugh so hard. I was never a huge fan until I met him.
Do you take criticism personally? Some of it I take
personally but I do a lot of criticism myself. If you’re gonna throw it out, you kind of Will Ferrell is have to take it as my favourite guest of well.
“
all time. He makes me Why did you laugh so hard. I was decide to go into comedy? never a huge I’ve always just fan until I met found the funny in situations. Everything him
I’m in the US all the time so I don’t think I’ll miss anything. In terms of what I’m looking forward to when coming here: trying to figure out how to plug my phone in. I still don’t understand why we can’t all have universal outlets. Why does it have to be so difficult?
In your book, Uganda Be Kidding Me, you get into lots of scrapes – which story do you most like reeling out? Well, I had an accident in a kayak. I act that out in the last part of my show. It happened in the Bahamas. I was coming home from Africa and stopped off there. It’s the perfect way to end things. It gives you the full scope of the American idiot everyone’s viewing.
Which chat show hosts do you admire? I don’t watch a lot
of British TV – when you’re on TV, you tend to watch a little bit less of it. I think I met Alan Carr on a plane once. I think it was him. Put it this way, someone I met on a plane said: ‘Oh, I’m a very famous comedian,’ and I said: ‘That’s wonderful, congratulations,’ but I
can be funny. I definitely find the most serious experiences are funny – weddings and funerals. I like making jokes out of everything. I realised I could make a career out of it when I started laughing at my own jokes.
Are most US stand-ups only in it to get a TV show? I don’t
know. Perhaps. I definitely wanted to be on TV but I never thought I’d have my own show. It all happened without a big masterplan – my whole life is like that. It’s definitely a good segue to get your own show.
Who has taught you the most? I think you learn the most
from yourself. You learn from your mistakes or things that work out well. And you learn from talking too much. You just have to not be a complete narcissist. You have to keep an observational distance from yourself and not be so immersed in yourself you look like a jackass. Piers Morgan is a good example of that. sharon Lougher

SAMSUNG is facing fresh accusations that one of its Chinese suppliers hired children to meet targets during a peak demand period. The South Korean electronics giant said it is looking into the allegation that its supplier, Shinyang Electronics in Dongguan, hired children and students under the legal working age. New York-based watchdog China Labour Watch (CLW) said children worked for 11 hours a day without overtime pay or social insurance. They left after three to six months when demand declined, but without any severance pay. The accusation conflicts with Samsung’s recent report on conditions at suppliers. It said no child labour was found by an external audit last year of about 100 Chinese suppliers. That audit found 59 suppliers did not provide safety equipment to employees and that excessive working hours were commonplace. In 2012, CLW said working conditions were ‘inhumane’ at Samsung suppliers in China where billions of Apple and Samsung smartphones are made. Samsung then said it would sever ties with companies that continued to fail to abide by a code of conduct. But CLW said Samsung’s monitoring system was ineffective and that it had failed to bring about improvements for workers.
Car sales see big increase on 2013 figures MORE new cars have been sold so far this year than in the whole of 2013, figures from the Society of the Irish Motor Industry (SIMI) indicate. By yesterday, 74,911 new cars had been sold in Ireland – up 28 per cent on this time last year. Nearly 10,000 cars have been sold in the first week of the 142 registration period – a 79 per cent increase on last year. SIMI director general Alan Nolan said the number of offers available, coupled with better financing options, indicates a good July for the motor industry.
n ALMOST 70,000 residential mortgages have been restructured due to engagement between consumers and lenders, according to new figures from the Department of Finance. Since the end of 2013 there were 18,118 mortgages restructured and 7,241 since the end of the first quarter of 2014. The figures also show the number of mortgages in arrears by 90 days or more is falling. At the end of 2013, there were 79,782 in arrears, but by the end of May 2014, the figure was 73,719. There are still 53,252 mortgages in arrears of 90 days or more not under any restructuring plan. There have been an average of 148.5 agreements to restructure a mortgage every month.

Greipel believes he answered his critics after extending Germany’s Tour de France sprint supremacy with victory yesterday. The Giant-Shimano team of Marcel Kittel were conspicuous by their absence in the closing stages until it emerged the winner of stages one, three and four had a problem and would not contend the sprint. It was Greipel (Lotto-Belisol), left out of position in the first three sprints of the Tour, who benefited, the German champion finishing arms aloft for the sixth Tour stage win of his career.

Raikkonen future cast into doubt AuTO Kimi Raikkonen has again raised doubts over his commitment to Formula One by suggesting he will retire for a second time at the end of next season. In the build up to the British Grand Prix, Raikkonen was asked about future plans, saying: ‘Until my contract is finished, and then I will probably stop. That is what I think is going to happen.’ After winning the world title in 2007, rumours circulated that Raikkonen had lost his appetite for F1. After two years away, he returned in 2012 with Lotus, with wins in Abu Dhabi and Australia eventually re-signed for Ferrari last September.

The Sky Blues were never in danger in Tullamore and wrapped up their semi-final victory by half-time when they led by 13 points. The 25point win means Dublin have remarkably qualified for all three finals in both codes at minor, U-21 and senior level. Cyril Kevlihan’s minor side will take on Kildare in the under-age

Hosts Offaly were no match for Dublin with O’Callaghan getting a first goal after six minutes and strikes from Chris Sallier and Aaron Byrne late in the half securing a 3-7 to 0-3 interval lead. Further goals from O’Callaghan and Sallier after the restart put Dublin 5-7 to 0-3 clear. They wrapped up a thoroughly one-sided contest with their sixth goal late on when sub Rian McBride palmed in Sallier’s long ball from close range.

WORLD CUP FINAL: GERMANY v ARGENTINA, SUNDAY (8pm)

Sunday's winners are likely to be the team that snuff out the threat of the two danger men - Thomas Muller and Lionel Messi, and that heavy duty responsibility will fall on the shoulders of two of the tournament's unsung heroes.
All Gun and dusted as Sanchez signs on
Philipp Lahm
Germany have been more balanced with captain Philipp Lahm in his traditional position at right-back but the 30-year-old Bayern Munich stalwart has performed sterling work for both club and country in a defensive midfield role. He is likely to be switched back into the centre of the park with the sole assignment of nullifying Messi's threat as the way Germany were set up against Brazil would give the Barcelona wizard too much freedom.
Lionel Messi and Thomas Muller will be pivotal players when Germany face Argentina in Sunday's World Cup final at the Maracana
Martin Demichelis Demichelis is far from the quickest centre-half but the Manchester City defender enjoyed a sterling end to the season and has carried that form into the World Cup. The 33-year-old, who spent much of his career in Germany, reads the game exceptionally well and his anticipation and timely tackles will be needed to stop Muller ghosting into the Argentina penalty area and wreaking havoc.
Messi wants to cement his legacy as one of the greatest players to have graced the beautiful game by winning his first World Cup, while Muller will share the Golden Boot for the second time if he scores in the final.

ARSENE WENGER added the world-class talents of Alexis Sanchez to his ranks after the Chile forward completed his move from Barcelona last night. Sanchez passed a medical in London yesterday, with the Gunners’ coy on the duration of his deal, merely announcing the 25-year-old has signed a ‘longterm deal’. The club have also not disclosed the fee but it is believed to be £35million. The capture of Sanchez, who also attracted interest from Juventus and Liverpool, is something of a coup for Wenger, who held face-toface talks with him in Brazil while working for TV at the World Cup. In a statement announcing the transfer, Wenger said: ‘As many people have seen during the World Cup, Alexis is a fantastic footballer. He will add power, creativity and much quality to our squad.’ Sanchez said: ‘I’m so happy to be joining Arsenal, a club which has a great manager, a fantastic squad, huge support around the world and a great stadium. ‘I will give my best to Arsenal

best attitude we should adopt is to analyse the root causes and long lasting causes of that disaster. ‘Learn the lessons, try to correct them and overcome these failings so this doesn’t happen again. So that Brazil can have a national squad with the status it should have in world football.’ The feeling of disharmony within the camp has only increased after a scath-

Superstar Neymar missed Tuesday’s nightmare in Belo Horizonte, and agent Wagner Ribeiro has made no attempt to hide his feelings on Scolari. Now all the former world number one needs to do is avoid his ‘friday curse’ to take another step towards a second european tour title in four events and give himself a boost ahead of next week’s open Championship. sweden’s Kristoffer Broberg had established a new record of 65 at a windswept royal Aberdeen after going out in the first group at 6.30am, but that lasted two hours as mcilroy carded eight birdies – including six in seven holes around the turn – and just one bogey. the 25-year-old used the strong winds to his advantage on the 13th, driving the green on the downhill 436yard par four. mcilroy said: ‘everything was pretty much on. i controlled my ball flight really well, which is the key to me playing well in these conditions and on these courses. ‘i’ve been working the last ten days on keeping the ball down, hitting easy shots and taking spin off it and i went McIlroy: ‘Driving really well’ out there today and really trusted what i practised. i’m driving the ball really well and i feel if i can get driver in my hand and have an advantage on the field i should do it,’ he added. ‘Going out this morning in these conditions i thought anything in the 60s would be a good score so to shoot something better than that is pleasing.’ the scoring overall was excellent in the conditions, with mcilroy leading by one from Broberg and Argentina’s ricardo Gonzalez, with fellow Northern irishman michael hoey another shot back on five under. Defending champion Phil mickelson finished four shots off the lead after a 68.
Fifa would be powerless if Suarez tries to kick off LuIS SuAREZ could be available to play for Barcelona at the start of the new season, if he decides to take his appeal against Fifa’s four-month ban to the highest levels. The striker is on the brink of a £65million switch from Liverpool to the Nou Camp – a deal with the Catalan giants off-loading Chilean
striker Alexis Sanchez to Arsenal. Fifa yesterday rejected an appeal by Suarez and uruguay’s football federation against the sanctions for biting Italy’s Giorgio Chiellini. It means the 27-year-old remains banned from all football activity until the end of October, on top of missing uruguay’s next
nine internationals and a £66,000 fine. However, football’s governing body cannot prevent Suarez from taking his case to the Court of Arbitration of Sport (CAS) and asking for his suspensions to be put on hold. ‘The decision is not yet final and binding,’ admitted Fifa head of
media Delia Fischer. However, should Suarez attempt to make himself available for the start of Barcelona’s La Liga season on August 24 it would not be without risk. About half of his current ban falls in the close season and, should he lose, the sanction could be reimposed leading to Suarez missing more matches.
Brennan’s Dubs break not ruling him out of role in championship
Time out: Brennan is on a rest from training to aid the defender’s recovery from an ankle injury pIcture: InphO
DuBLIN football manager Jim Gavin says Ger Brennan and Dublin are ‘on a break’. But the All-Ireland-winning boss insists his experienced centre-back can still have a big role to play this summer. Brennan hasn’t played for Dublin this year due to a mixture of club commitments with St Vincent’s and subsequent ankle surgery. According to Gavin, the defender remains an official member of the squad yet, curiously, isn’t taking any part in training or activities. ‘He’s on a break at the moment,’ said Gavin. ‘He’s in the squad, it’s just part of his recovery. We’ve programmed in a break for him.
‘It’s been a bit stop-start for Ger but he’s a determined young man. If we can get over the next game, hopefully he’ll see some time with the jersey on.’ Brennan’s absence shouldn’t upset
‘He’s in the squad, it’s just part of recovery’ the team too much, with options in the half-backs. Nicky Devereux has been the chief beneficiary so far, wearing the No.6 jersey against Laois and Wexford. Kevin Nolan and Bryan Cullen all have huge experience there while
Michael Fitzsimons replaced Devereux during the win over Wexford. It’s yet another sign of Dublin’s panel strength, with 1-18 registered by substitutes in their two games so far and 3-17 in the whole of last year’s Championship. Ahead of the Leinster final against Meath on Sunday week, Gavin called on the GAA to introduce a squad number system. It would lead to players being assigned numbers they would retain all season. ‘I think that would make eminent sense, absolutely,’ said Gavin.
