Garth says gigs ain’t goin’ down
GARTH BROOKS fans were devastated last night after the singer announced all five of his Croke Park gigs were off, ending the ticketing and licensing debacle that has gone on for two weeks. In a statement, Brooks said: ‘I just received the news the Irish council cannot change their earlier ruling to not allow the licences for all five shows. ‘To say I am crushed is an understatement. I want to thank the Irish authorities for going the distance for all of us who wanted to share songs and dance together. ‘Most of all, to Peter Aiken and those 400,000 people who believed enough to go through what they have been through to get to this point… I love you, always have, always will.’ Almost two weeks of deliberations between Brooks’ management, Aiken Promo-
by CON DOHERTY
tions, Dublin City Council and even the Taoiseach, failed to reach a compromise after the council gave permission for only three of the five sold-out gigs, worth €50million to the economy. Aiken Promotions followed up the US country star’s note with a statement saying it regretted ‘to announce that despite pursuing all possible solutions, the five-concert Garth Brooks Comeback Special Event at Croke Park is cancelled. No concerts will take place’. Brooks advised fans to ‘come see the show, at some point around the world, to bring your Irish flags and wave them proudly at the concerts. I will be looking for you.’ The ticket return process will begin on Thursday.

Flowery follicles now trending CONCEIVABLY the male equivalent to the flower crown, unusual bearded floral arrangements are tugging the internet by the whiskers. With the beard very much hitting its peak, the next obvious transition for the men of the world appears to be decorating their sprouting stubble with an assortment of daisies, begonias and carnations. The premise of the ‘flower beard’ is seemingly: Women like beards and flowers, right? So surely they must like beards with flowers. It’s oddly impressive, not just because the staple of manliness
can be given such an elegant and feminine touch, but also the fact that these men display a keen eye for arrangement. The latest fad is inspired by Pierre Thiot, who grew a thick beard and then photographed the objects and paraphernalia he could attach to it. Together with his photographer wife Stacy Thiot, Pierre has set the benchmark for bristly brilliance – the Will It Beard Tumblr gallery taking on a life of its own and inspiring men everywhere to enhance their chins with radiant, and no doubt fragrant, flowering.
Friends so close they really are like family BIRDS of a feather really do flock together. We are genetically similar to those we choose as our friends, scientists say. It is the equivalent of fourth cousins or people who share great, great, great grandparents. ‘We have more DNA in common with people we pick as friends than we do with strangers in the same population,’ said lead researcher Prof James Fowler. Genes affecting our sense of smell are among the most similar in friends, possibly because smell draws us to similar environments. A total of 2,000 people were involved in the US study, in which pairs of unrelated friends were compared with pairs of unrelated strangers. About one per cent of the friends’ genes matched each other – a significant level in terms of genetics.

Exports hit an 18-month high in May EXPORTS have hit an 18-month high as the economy picks up, according to new figures. Month-on-month, exports rose by 15 per cent in May to reach their highest level in 18 months. The economy grew by 2.7 per cent in the first quarter, recovering from a disappointing end to last year. Exports struggled last year because of the mixed economic picture in Europe and the expiry of patents among the large cluster of drugs companies here. Some €7.9billion in goods were exported in May, the Central Statistics Office said. The Government is targeting economic growth of 2.1 per cent this year.
Bankruptcy cases surge this year THERE has been a major increase in bankruptcies and debt arrangements in the last three months, the Insolvency Service of Ireland has reported. Some 98 bankruptcies were declared from April and June, bringing the total to 164 for the year so far, compared to 58 in 2013. Debt deals have trebled since the first quarter with €278million debt this year (€55m in 2013). The ISI has dealt with 850 cases (€330m) since last year – 45 per cent was mortgage debt on principal private residences. Meanwhile, the Irish Mortgage Holders Organisation said the ISI is not working and not fit for purpose.
Warning on gas meter tampering TAMPERING with your gas meter could be fatal, Bord Gáis has warned. The energy provider has launched a campaign to highlight the dangers of doing so, following an increase in incidences in 2013. There have been more than 500 confirmed tampering cases since last September. The crime carries a €5,000 fine or a sixmonth jail sentence. Owen Wilson, head of safety with Bord Gáis Networks, said: ‘By tampering with a meter, people are not just putting their own safety at risk, but that of their families, neighbours and the general public.’

Poolbeg could become the ‘centre-piece’ for Dublin Bay AN ‘urgent local area plan’ needs to be drawn up for the Poolbeg area of the city which would ‘both protect the [ESB] towers and push the redevelopment of the surrounding area.’ That’s according to Green Party councillors Patrick Costello and Claire Byrne, who tabled an emergency motion that was passed at last night’s City Council meeting. Mr Costello said: ‘By saving the chimneys and protecting this piece of architectural heritage we can set the tone for the whole development of this fantastic asset for Dublin.’ They agreed with a motion from Labour councillor Dermot Lacey that the Poolbeg chimneys in Ringsend are ‘a key part of
Dublin’s industrial heritage’ and should be included as such on the list of protected structures. ESB chief executive Pat O’Doherty said he’s torn on what should be done with the chimneys, adding that as a Dubliner he likes them, but as an engineer he feels different. Speaking on Newstalk, he said that ‘all sorts of ideas have been bandied about’ including a revolving restaurant, a wobbly bridge between them, abseiling down them and a lift up them. He added: ‘We know that they are of huge interest to people and for everybody that says they’re iconic, somebody else says they’re a blot on the Dublin skyline.’

SURVIVORS of Magdalene Laundries are getting an average compensation pay-out of almost €36,000, Justice Minister Frances Fitzgerald has revealed. Before a United Nations watchdog committee looking at the country’s human rights standards, Ms Fitzgerald said €12.4million has been paid so far to 346 women incarcerated in the institutions. Although some have sought a review of the amount of compensation offered to them under the publicly-funded scheme, she suggested it was working well. ‘There are some issues for some of the women, obviously, in terms of records and documentary evidence which can be very difficult. We want to be as flexible and supportive as we can in terms of getting that information,’ she said. The redress scheme is expected to cost the taxpayer up to €58m. Payments range from €11,500 for women kept less than three months in the Catholic church-run workhouses, up to a maximum of €100,000 for survivors incarcerated for more than a decade. The four congregations who ran them – Sisters of Our Lady of Charity, Mercy Sisters, Sisters of Charity and Good Shepherd Sisters – have refused to contribute to the compensation fund. Around 10,000 women passed through Magdalene Laundries between 1922 and 1996. Ms Fitzgerald leads a Government delegation to Geneva for two days of questioning on issues including Traveller ethnicity, women who endured symphysiotomy, and abortion rights.
Robbo lands top UN climate change post FORMER President Mary Robinson has been charged with overseeing global efforts to tackle climate change. The appointment by UN secretary general Ban Ki-moon comes ahead of an international summit in New York in September and means Mrs Robinson will have to stand down from her role as special envoy to the Great Lakes, a
cross-border peace-making role in the African region. Yesterday Mrs Robinson, who set up a foundation in 2010 to campaign for justice for victims of climate change, said while she has ‘mixed emotions’ at handing over the Great Lakes role, Mr Ban’s faith in her capacity to make progress on climate change is an affirmation of the work of The
Mary Robinson Foundation – Climate Justice. Taoiseach Enda Kenny congratulated Mrs Robinson on her appointment, praising her ‘unrelenting and tireless dedication’ to causes that benefit all mankind. And Trócaire head Éamonn Meehan, described Mrs Robinson’s new appointment as one of ‘global significance’.

They made their first court appearance yesterday after admitting abducting Mohammed Abu Khdeir, 16, and burning him alive, police said. The suspects carried out the attack in revenge for the abduction of three Jewish teenagers found dead last month, officers added. They will return to court on Friday. Mohammed was snatched outside his house in Shuafat, east Jerusalem, on July 2. His charred remains were later found in a secluded forest. His death set off days of violent protests in Arab areas of Jerusalem and northern Israel. Three other suspects are being questioned over their part in the murder, thought to be a response to the killing of Eyal Yifrach, 19, Gil-ad Sha’er and Naftali Frankel, both 16, whose bodies

He told British MPs: ‘The UN estimates that 80 per cent of those killed have been civilians, of which a third are children.’

ExAMpLE, 32, has had hits including the No.1 Changed The Way You Kiss Me. When he’s not making music he’s driving his Jaguar F-Type
Is your new album a bit chirpier than the last one?
The last one was about dealing with my demons and therapy and apologising to my ex-girlfriend for behaving like a prick. I’m in a happier place now and Live Life Living is about living life to the max – which I know sounds f***ing awful – but I’m enjoying travelling around the world and being back in the studio. It’s positive and uplifting. The influences are stuff from the 1990s, including Robin S, The Prodigy and Underworld. Everyone’s been asking if the album is about me getting married. I’ve been saying: ‘Yes, there’s a song on there about my wedding day.’ Of course there f***ing isn’t.
Would that appeal to your audience? No, first and foremost
I write for the clubs and festivals. But the label has its sights set on global success so you’ve got to play the game and I tweak some of the tracks for radio.
You’re rapping on this again, aren’t you? I said I wasn’t going
to but I’ve stuck little raps on five
tracks. Changed The Way You Kiss Me was 90 per cent singing with a little rap on but people kept referring to me a rapper, which I think is disrespectful to my peer group – people like Wretch 32, Professor Green and Tinie Tempah, who are all amazing rappers.
As a British artist, you’ve said UK rap isn’t well received in the US or Europe – why’s that? The more I travel – and I’ve
been to 110 countries now – I’ve noticed that a lot of British rap isn’t played in a lot of countries. The only people who tour the world on that scale are Tinie Tempah and Dizzie Rascal. That might be because their songs are huge but I feel British rap isn’t on many people’s radar. Britain has some of the best rappers in the world. We have guys who can compete with the US in terms of skill but I don’t know if we’ll have anyone who can compete with Jay Z and Kanye West. The Americans seem more extravagant, which doesn’t reflect British culture. US culture seems more about showing off. In Britain we don’t really like show-offs so I’m
not sure if we’ll reach those heights.
You competed in a car race recently. What happened?
My wife [Australian model Erin McNaught] and I did the Mille Miglia in Italy – 1,000 miles through 80 towns and villages in a 1951 Jaguar XK120. We were hurtling through the country roads – it was like Wacky Races. I didn’t realise it was a race. I drove by about ten wrecks of cars that were worth between one and ten million euro each. It was exhausting – I drove for 19 hours on day two. Every village you go through, all the people come out throwing their local produce at you – balsamic vinegar, olives, cheese, the nuns are out, girls in bikinis. It was nuts.
Are you a vintage car enthusiast now? I love cars and
get to test drive some amazing ones but I don’t really spend money on them. I’ve got a nice Jaguar F-Type now and the car is amazing but I’m out of the country 150 days a year and when I’m at home I’m writing songs so to have a sports car at home is a bit silly – I won’t get to enjoy it.
“
The biggest buzz is being on stage having a crowd sing your songs back to you Are you still planning on giving it all up and becoming a film director? I never said I’d
give up music – I enjoy being on stage too much. I’ve got mates who are actors who have done music and they all say the biggest buzz is being on stage having a crowd sing your songs back to you. With acting there are long days, a lot of waiting around and you have to do your scenes 20 times. You get a bit of attention at the Oscars but that’s it. There isn’t the adrenaline rush of being on stage. As much as I’d like to direct and be in films, that’s something I could do in my late thirties or forties. I’ve got two albums left on my current deal so I’ll at least get them out of the way and then look at other options.
What lessons has your career in the music industry taught you? The main thing is I’ve got no regrets – I’ve learned from everything I’ve done. I’ve made a lot of mistakes in life but they have influenced my music, which I’m quite grateful for. I’ve made some music videos I’m not

proud of. The one for Two Lives is the perfect example of a director being told what to do by a record label and it not working out. I’ve also been guilty of having some f***ing awful haircuts but now I generally just feel happy and settled. Andrew Williams

Costa Concordia wreck is refloated in record €1.5bn salvage mission by JOEL TAYLOR IT WAS a bustling cruise ship that became a watery grave to 32 people. For two-and-a-half years, the Costa Concordia has rotted under the waves near the Tuscan island of Giglio. Its faded lounge is strewn with broken chairs and tables crusted with grime. Damaged beds hang from hastily abandoned cabins and once gleaming lifts stand frozen. But yesterday the 114,500-tonne ship was floated again in one of the largest salvage operations in maritime history. Concordia was hauled upright in September and was resting on a temporary platform. Salvage crews yesterday began to pump air into 30 large metal boxes – or caissons – fitted to its hull. As water was forced out, the ship – once home to 4,200 passengers – began to lift off the underwater platform. Six hours after the operation began, the project’s chief engineer, Franco Porcellacchia, said Concordia was buoyant with the caissons attached. ‘The ship is upright and is not listing either longitudinally or latitudinally. This is extremely positive,’ he added. Chains and cables were used to stabilise the 290m-long ship before tug boats moved it about 30m into the harbour. From there it will be prepared to be towed to Genoa in northern Italy, where it will be broken up for scrap. The ship’s captain, Francesco Schettino, is on trial accused of manslaughter. He is accused of causing a shipwreck by sailing too close to shore to ‘salute’ the port before abandoning ship in January last year. He denies the charges. Taliban captive back Citigroup to pay to ‘soldier duties’ €5bn settlement
FORMER Taliban prisoner Bowe Bergdahl has made the transition to ‘normal soldier’, having been assigned a desk job at a base in Texas. Sgt Bergdahl was handed over to US special forces in Afghanistan on May 31 after five years in captivity, as part of a deal in which the US gave up five Taliban commanders. Investigators are expected to interrogate the 28-year-old over allegations he walked away from his unit before being captured. Disciplinary action against Bergdahl, who was promoted twice during captivity, has not been ruled out by army officials.

CITIGROUP will pay $7billion (€5.1billion) to settle an investigation into risky subprime mortgages. The agreement comes weeks after talks between the sides broke down, prompting the US government to warn it would sue after the New York investment bank had offered to pay less than $4billion. The settlement stems from the sale of securities made up of subprime mortgages, which fuelled both the housing boom and bust at the end of 2007. Citigroup and other banks downplayed the risks of subprime mortgages, selling them to mutual funds, investment trusts, pensions, as well as other banks.

Mel B may already be making waves on The X Factor but the former Spice Girl managed to find time for a beach holiday before the next round of auditions. The 39-year-old Scary Spice showed off her wild side by donning a leopard print bikini for a quick splash around in the Atlantic on Miami beach. Mel put on a united front with her hunky film producer husband Stephen Belafonte as they relaxed by the sea on Sunday as an accusation broke that the singer had tried to grope glamour model Nicole McLean’s breasts. The accusation came one week after former Playboy model Luann Lee claimed she had enjoyed a lesbian romp with Mel in a disabled toilet. Meanwhile on The X Factor, Welsh hopeful Lianne Morgan – who was in a girl band with Mel before her Spice Girls days – accused the Holler singer of trying to humiliate her during an arena audition.

modern classics like Japan 0-0 Greece and Iran 0-0 Nigeria. You deserve as much praise as Mario Götze, perhaps more – he was only a sub, after all. You didn’t have that luxury: you had to be fit to take your place on the sofa for every game of the tournament. And what a tournament it was, right from Robin van Persie’s embarrassing high-five with Dutch manager Louis van Gaal through to Rihanna’s wisdom-filled tweets about England’s defence (‘Man they know better than to give Suarez that much room bruh!’) – and the football was pretty good, too. Holland thrashed Spain, Germany thrashed Brazil and
the aforementioned Suarez took his penchant for mid-match snacking to the next level. New stars were born, with James Rodriguez’s goals spearheading Colombia’s run to the quarter-finals and Costa Rica keeper Keylor Navas the hero of their fairytale run to the last eight. For our near neighbours, little was expected, and in that regard Roy Hodgson’s squad delivered. England and Germany both play in white, but that’s where similarity ends. Their games against Italy, Uruguay and Costa Rica were so long ago it seems ridiculous to suggest they were in the tournament that ended with Germany’s 1-0 win over Argentina on Sunday.

WORKPLACES in Ireland could be transformed within the next two decades by technology and processes that do not even exist today, according to a new study. Employees predicted that within 20 years they will be able to send virtual assistants or holograms (59 per cent) to attend meetings for them. They also considered the next batch of innovations to include drones; BlueTooth from brainto-brain; and carrier nodes – devices that allow data to be transmitted to the brain. Yet despite the widespread value placed in a tech-evolved workplace, less than a third (29 per cent) say their company has a strong appetite for creating new ways of deploying technologies to make the future a reality. Workers are eager to use new technologies that can enhance and simplify how employees interact with colleagues and information, the survey found. More than 700 employees from Ireland and the UK were surveyed for electronics company Ricoh and many showed strong foresight when considering future innovations.

7 years for ‘gay’ chef who attacked woman
A CHEF who raped a young woman after inviting her back to his apartment for a party has been given a seven-year sentence. Samir Mansour, 48, had pleaded not guilty to raping the woman at his then apartment at Windmill Hill, Prospect, Dublin Road, Mullingar in 2010. Mansour, with a current address at The Lock, Market Point, Mullingar, was convict-
ed earlier this month. The court heard the woman had met Mansour at a nightclub and that he suggested they go back to his apartment for a party, after lying to her that he was gay, but after he told her nobody else was coming, he pulled her into a bedroom and raped her. The victim managed to leave the apartment and rang her father, who alerted gardaí.
The court heard that Mansour has no previous convictions and had been working as a chef in a restaurant in Mullingar since coming to this country from Tunisia in 2001. He is a father of one from a previous marriage. Mr Justice Barry White noted the offence has had a lasting effect on the injured party and handed down the sentence.
Violent rapist followed women to their homes by DEcLAn bREnnAn A MAN who violently raped and beat women after following them home at night will be sentenced next week at the Central Criminal Court. Salman Dar, 33, is currently serving a 15-year sentence for viciously attacking and raping three women in separate incidents in 2004. Yesterday, the court heard that in 2012 Dar was in prison when he contacted gardaí to say he wanted to confess to two more sex attacks carried out within the same six months. Describing his actions, Dar told gardaí: ‘I had no plan. If opportunity presents, I’ll attack.’ He said it was in the back of his head when he had gone out on each of those nights and he would pick out somebody. Dar, a postgraduate computer science student who comes from a respected and prominent family in Lahore, and formerly of Abbey View, Ballyhaunis, Co Mayo, pleaded guilty to an attempted rape at Ranelagh on March 21, 2004. He also pleaded guilty to oral rape and sexual assault at Synge Street on May 23, 2004. Dar attacked both women as they had reached the front door of their home after walking home late at night. At a 2005 hearing, Dar pleaded guilty to raping three other women on dates between February and June 2004 at three locations in Dublin city: near the Phoenix Park, in the Smithfield Markets area and on Jervis Street. Mr Justice Paul Carney adjourned sentencing to next Monday in order to assess the evidence and mitigating factors. He said he would be willing to consider suspending any sentence on condition that Dar be deported immediately after his current sentence expires.

Four years for rape of partner’s sister A WATERFORD man has been sentenced to seven years with three suspended for the rape of his partner’s younger sister. The 20-year-old man was convicted by a jury at the Central Criminal Court in April following a four-day trial of the rape of the then 16-yearold girl on May 20, 2012. He was 18 at the time and has no previous convictions. The young woman outlined in her victim impact statement that she no longer feels safe anywhere as the rape had occurred in her sister’s house, where she expected to be safe. Mr Justice Barry White said the fact drink had been taken was not an excuse but may be an explanation as to why the offence occurred.

Michael Coombs, also known as rapper Mike GLC, owned up to supplying 13.9g of the Class A drug when he appeared in the dock alongside the former N-Dubz star (pictured). The court heard the 36-year-old, of Enfield, London, sold the drugs to reporter Mazher Mahmood, dubbed the ‘fake sheikh’, for £860 in a newspaper sting at the Dorchester Hotel, London, in May last year. Contostavlos, 26, of Friern Barnet, London, who denies charges related to the supply of drugs, goes on trial today. She had to leave the hearing yesterday after suffering a nose bleed. He said: ‘We applied to expand into the building next door a few years ago and to install a wheelchair-accessible toilet, but we were
refused permission – “too many pubs on the street”, they said.’ He added that wheelchair-using patrons would only be refused upstairs for their own safety as they would be unable to get up or down quickly in an emergency. He added that the needs of the differently-abled are ‘very close’ to him and added that Solas has Ireland’s only braille menu.

Horse and carriage image no fairytale
O
N Parliament Street the other evening, I heard an almighty bang. When I looked up a horse pulling a carriage of tourists had taken a corner too sharply and fallen to the ground. my heart broke for him, just as I am sure his spirit was broken a long time ago. I’m surprised and saddened that this industry is still thriving, with horses continuing to endure pain and suffering. Constantly walking on hard streets can cause lameness and hoof deterioration. Walking with lowered heads increases their exposure to exhaust fumes – post mortem investigations on horses like these have revealed lungs the equivalent to those of a heavy smoker. There is also a risk to horse and human as these beautiful creatures
are easily spooked by traffic and loud noise. There have been many incidents involving horses colliding with cars or simply collapsing from exhaustion and being euthanaised at the side of the road. The fairytale image of the romantic journey in a horse and carriage is just that – a fairytale. Gandhi once said: ‘The greatness of a nation and its moral progress can be judged by the way its animals are treated’. Well if that’s true then there is no hope left for us. idden at the back of Finger Lickin’ Food, the new book by US chef Jamie deen, is a minicookbook, written by his seven-year-old son Jack, called Rooster’s Café. A love of food runs in the deen family – Jamie is the son of celebrity chef Paula, infamous for her calorific creations (her signature dish is The Lady’s Brunch Burger, a hamburger topped with bacon and a fried egg with glazed doughnuts as the bun). But the emphasis in Finger Lickin’ Food is on Southern-style recipes that are healthy and seasonal: buttermilk chicken and apple turnovers are baked rather than deep-fried and black bean burgers with pico de gallo (tomato relish) are a twist on Paula’s bean-cake sandwiches, with soya beans for a ‘pop of green’. There’s plenty to indulge in here as well: oven-roasted ribs, pulled pork sandwiches with slaw or a jelly salad (an ‘amped-up’ strawberry cheesecake made with pretzels and powdered jelly). The Rooster’s Café recipes are

CARAMEL AppLEs Every time I visit a sweet shop, I go straight to the case that holds the huge gooey caramel apples covered in all sorts of things, like nuts, pieces of sweets and even cookie crumbs. I just had to make one for myself, and it turns out that it’s really easy to do. Just be sure to have an adult help you because the melted caramel is real hot.
IngREDIEnTs Makes 6
6 organic apples of your choosing ♦ 1tbsp distilled white vinegar ♦ 6 lollipop sticks ♦ 400g individually wrapped caramels ♦ 3tbsp full-fat milk. For toppings: toffee pieces ♦ crushed cookies ♦ chopped pecan nuts step 1 Line a baking tray with greaseproof paper. Give the apples
Sweet enough: Jamie Deen’s son Jack added his favourite recipes to his father’s book a nice bath in cold water with a splash of white vinegar, which helps the caramel stick to them. Dry them off well with a clean tea towel. Use scissors to snip out the apple stalks. Insert a stick into the top of each apple. step 2 Unwrap the caramels and place them in a large microwaveable bowl. Add the milk and microwave for 3min. Give the caramels a stir, then
microwave again for a further 2min until they are completely melted. Leave the caramel mixture to cool down for 1-2min. step 3 Dip each apple into the caramel, twirling the stick to make sure the apple gets completely coated. Straight away, sprinkle the caramel apple with toppings, pressing them gently to stick, then set it on the prepared tray. refrigerate for 30min.
FROzEn CHOCOLATE BAnAnAs Dad told me that when he was young, he wanted to move to the Bahamas and sell frozen chocolate bananas with all sorts of different toppings. He says it every time we make them, which makes me think he might just do it one day.
IngREDIEnTs Makes 4
2 medium bananas ♦ 4 chopsticks ♦ 225g milk chocolate, chopped, or milk
♦ Chocolate chips ♦ 2tsp rapeseed oil ♦ chopped peanuts or rainbow sprinkles step 1 Line a baking tray with greaseproof paper. Peel the bananas, then cut them in half if they’re big. Insert the chopsticks halfway into the cut end of the bananas. Place the bananas on the prepared tray and freeze for 45min. step 2 To melt the chocolate, put it in a small glass bowl and place over a

step 3 Dip and turn the frozen bananas into the chocolate, and spoon it on to cover them. Let the extra chocolate drip off, then sprinkle with the toppings. Place the bananas back on the tray and freeze for 30min until the chocolate sets.

aving raised £80,000 (€100,000) through crowdfunding, a young food enthusiast starts a new edible tradition in a town east of Belfast. near Manchester, a new mum does the same during her maternity leave. in different ways, both their products break the mould. You’d assume that Michael Thomson and Claire Burt (pictured below) would both be making something painfully of-the-moment: perhaps biodynamic kale smoothies or outlandish marshmallows. in fact, they have both entered a pungent and richly-veined arena associated more readily with port and gout than fresh thinking and re-imagined traditions. They are the latest new makers of irish and British blue cheese, and they’re very good at it. andy Swinscoe, co-proprietor of the Courtyard Dairy in Settle, north Yorkshire, has seen blue cheese enjoy a resurgence in popularity. ‘Britain is well known throughout the world for Stilton,’ he says, ‘but in recent times we’ve expanded. There is more of an interest in blue cheese. People are waking up to the fact that blues can be balanced and not too knock-your-socks-off. We spend a lot of time on blue cheese – it’s more popular than Brie and soft cheeses. You can’t have a cheeseboard without it.’ The growth isn’t just in the UK and ireland. at the international Cheese awards in nantwich, entries from australia and Canada now join European cheeses in the chilled marquee built especially to house blues. Claire Burt’s first cheese, Burt’s Blue, won a gold award at nantwich in 2010 and is now used

Michael Thomson, who crowdfunded his dairy, Mike’s Fancy Cheese, in May last year and promptly started making northern ireland’s first raw milk cheese, says it just felt right. ‘We’re a new start-up,’ he says from the dairy in newtownards, ten miles from Belfast. ‘There’s no-one else making a cheese on a small scale and no history of farmhouse cheesemaking.’ He chose blue – Young Buck is best described as a really interesting Stilton – because he likes it. ‘Cheese making isn’t the most glamorous of jobs, so you need to make a cheese that you’re passionate about, and enjoy the process of making. a lot of new cheesemakers are going for blues because delis find it hard to source a blue cheese that isn’t Stilton.’ another difference is that, despite collecting local milk every other day, Mike’s fancy cheese is decidedly urban. ‘Cheese is made in a place with white walls and stainless steel tables,’ he says. ‘i spend a lot of time in the countryside but i’m a city boy at heart. We’re not a countryside cheese, we’re a wee city cheese.’ How very modern. Young Buck cheese is available from Fallon & Byrne on Suffolk Street and Sheridan’s Cheesemongers on South Anne St. www.mfcheese.com
Andy Swinscoe of the Courtyard Dairy offers his tips on keeping and enjoying a good blue cheese. Keep it small, eat it quick ‘Cheese is better eaten fresh, so buy smaller bits and eat it faster. I’d rather people got a little bit and ate it within seven days than had it hanging around in their fridge for weeks. At home, it’s best kept in wax paper and in Tupperware in the fridge.’ Don’t have it cold ‘It’s key that you eat it at room temperature, it makes it taste much better. Walnuts and grapes go well in between bits of cheese because some blues have a natural sweetness to them. I like a hunk of bread.’ Put the port down ‘When you’re buying really good quality blues there’s no point overpowering that flavour. If you’re not careful, a good Stilton can wreck a good port and a good port can wreck a good Stilton.’ thecourtyarddairy.co.uk

Wii all remember how to play this THE big RELEAsE

n case any of you were in denial about your age, Wii Sports, a launch title for nintendo’s then groundbreaking console, was released eight years ago. Eight. The game was a huge commercial success but the harsh reality is many Wiis are now gathering dust, only given a second look when a dinner party veers out of control. nintendo’s successor, the Wii U, has been a sales flop and, as the company heads to its 125th anniversary in September, it’s been desperate for a boost in hardware sales. The recent release of the brilliant Mario Kart 8 has helped shift new consoles and now Sports Club is tasked with tempting Wii veterans – and new dinner party hosts and families – back into the nintendo fold. The game includes five highdefinition remakes of sports from the original 2006 title – bowling, tennis, golf, baseball and boxing.
Will you be bowled over? Wii Sports Club features five high-definition remakes of games from the original title Some had already been given a staggered, downloadable release through nintendo’s online store but they now come together in one release at an overall lower price. For good, clean fun, there’s much to admire. The game steers clear of official tie-ins, which can stifle
big-budget sports sims with advertising, and the kind of attention to detail that scares off casual players. Instead, it’s refreshing, if simplistic. You can pick a tennis player or boxer on the merit of their hair rather than real-life reputation
Don’t queue at the bar, brew your own beer This smartphone-controlled craft beer creator lets you organise a lash-up in your very own brewery without having to leave the house. The Brewbot is an automated ale aficionado that simplifies the making process from start to finish via an app. Select a beer recipe from an evergrowing list compiled by Brewbot’s own evangelist and the app sends instructions to the machine before advising you when to add the water, malt and hops. Cargo, makers of the Brewbot, claim the process takes around five hours – and you only

Each brew makes around 18 litres – or 31 pints – of ale and you can have multiple beers fermenting at the same time, provided you have enough tanks to accommodate. It’s impossible to ignore how cool the machine looks, so the temptation to place it somewhere prominent is obvious. Just beware: brewing beer smells. Cargo claims you’ll experience whiffs ranging from warm bread to pine and that things calm down after a couple of hours – but they might be sniffing through rose-scented nostrils. regional clubs to join and a ranking system for players in your area. You can also leave messages of congratulations, commiserations or unadulterated trash talk. If we’re going to criticise, five sports really isn’t enough choice. But, given the game costs less than €40 and a new Wii U console can be picked up for less than €250, it’s still a tempting buy. nintendo has been banking on its most famous characters, such as Mario and Zelda, to drive Wii U sales. With the addition of Wii Sports Club, it’s close to a full arsenal of titles to choose from. It’s just a shame it’s come so late in the day. James Day
REviEw nokia lumia 1320/1520 TO phablet or not to phablet, that is the question. A phablet, in case you didn’t know, is a cross between a phone and a tablet – giving mobile phone connectivity with a larger screen. Nokia has two six-inch devices on the market at the moment – the 1320 and the higher end 1520 (pictured). There’s no getting around that this device is big and has a kind of Dom Joly Trigger Happy TV feel to it when you’re using it as a phone. However, for many people, a smartphone is a data device first with the actual phone element much less used and this is where the phablet comes into its own. Running Windows Phone 8.0 with a 20MP PureView camera and a Full HD 1080p screen, the 1520 is a beautiful device. Photography enthusiasts will be interested in the array of photography and video options – from auto to pro. It also has optical image stabilisation for the shaky of hand but is more suited to composed photos rather than a quick snap.
The pre-installed Microsoft Office will be handy for people working on the go. As you’d expect, the 1520 is great for passing a long commute by catching up on TV, movies or playing games. Battery life is also excellent. However, the large screen and battery makes the 1520 quite heavy. Meanwhile, the less expensive 1320 has a matt black casing that’s clunky and doesn’t fit as nicely into your hand as the 1520. It’s heavier too. The screen in this device is 720p HD and it’s not bad – until you put it side by side with its big brother. We watched a movie trailer on both devices and the difference was noticeable. The 1320 has a 5MP camera, which is OK, and it also has a great battery. Both devices have Nokia Music and the Here maps service. The Lumia 1520 is currently available in black in Vodafone Ireland. Prices start from free on billpay. The 1320 is available from O2 stores from free on billpay and €269.99 on prepay. Joanne Ahern

Cool blue: The stylish marina area (pictured right), ght), the beach be club (page 13) and (far right) the bay popular with windsurfers who led the way for othes to follow to escape the oppressive heat of the chaotic city. ‘You can’t compare the Alaçatı of today to what it was when I was growing up,’ says a local, who has just moved back to the town after a stint in Miami. ‘It was poor and there was nothing to do here. Now it’s completely different. It’s the place to be.’ Now topping every must-visit list for 2014, Alaçatı is challenging Bodrum, Antalya and Marmaris for the title of turkey’s most stylish Aegean resort. Alavya (alavya.com.tr, doubles from €195), the town’s first luxury resort, opened a year ago. Spread over six restored stone houses with 25 rooms, it is set in a walled garden with courtyards and fruit trees and is the most obvious symbol of the town’s reinvention.
the hotel was the brainchild of construction chief Erol tabancak and his wife, Rana, who hired turkey’s most famous interior designer, Hakan Ezer, and chef, Carlo Bernardini, to develop their concept of casual luxury. And it’s been well received by the east’s high rollers – Muhtar Kent, the head of Coca-Cola, recently hosted an intimate dinner there.

known for its olive production so you’ll find plenty along with vibrant produce and just about every spice imaginable. Alancha (alancha.com) is the most luxurious restaurant in the area. It has panoramic views over the town and offers tasting menus of dishes prepared using ‘ancient Anatolian and modern cooking methods’. Locals say the restaurant to go for ‘real local food’ is Asma Yaprağı (asmayapragi.com.tr). You dine here as though you are part of one big family, walking from the street straight into the authentic rural kitchen. Konak Hotel (alacatisultankonak.com, doubles from €70) is also worth a look. Built from scratch by Istanbul-born Sema Guredin Sentay, it’s filled with eclectic furniture passed down through generations of her family. Be warned though, the perimeter of the town is a building site and a stark contrast to the pretty old town. Take the once-untouched marina in Porte Alaçati harbour. Now home to multimillion-euro Venetian-style houses with yachts lined along the end of their vast open gardens, its beauty is presently blighted by the construction of a large hotel. The first wave of visitors to Alaçati arrived in the 1970s, when windsurfers from all corners of the globe descended on its marina to compete in the PWA World Windsurfing Tour (August 26 to 31). The rich of Istanbul duly followed. ‘I fell in love with Alaçatı and came back shortly after our holiday here to set up our hotel,’ Kurabiye owner Perihan Akbulut tells me. This flux of hotels drew in the well-heeled, artistic folk who eventually began setting up galleries. The new creative buzz emerged. The charm of Alaçatı lies in the fact that its inhabitants, both old and new, have preserved its rural appeal, something many other tourist spots have struggled to maintain. A strict midnight curfew for playing loud music means people tend to head to the bars of the nearby

Naomi’s trip was in partnership with Explore Alaçatı (explorealacati.com) peninsula, so all you can hear after dark is the sound of the wind beating against olive-oil cans lining the walls of charmingly derelict stone houses, many of which are more than 100 years old. Sole & Mare (solemarebeachclub.com), one of many luxury beach clubs, plays music until the wee small hours and is the spot to see and be seen in. But most of the clubs are much of a muchness so you need to head off the beaten track for something special. Ramo’s Palace in Çesme has just the right balance. It’s tranquil and low-key by day – the type of place you could easily have to yourself during the off season – but surrounded by cool, fashionable types partying against a sunset backdrop by night. In Alaçatı you get the best of both worlds. Some come to zone in, others to zone out. Now it’s on everyone’s ‘must-visit’ list, fingers crossed it holds on to the relaxed, authentic charm that attracted people in the first place.

The Italian reclaimed the yellow jersey from Tony Gallopin by winning the arduous stage to the summit at La Planche des Belles Filles, his second win of the race.

with what was later diagnosed as a broken shin. That leaves Nibali two minutes and 32 seconds clear of Team Sky’s Richie Porte, who climbs onto the podium ahead of today’s first rest day, with Alejandro Valverde third. On his chances of a podium, Porte said: ‘We’ll take it day by day.’
Ask Jim GAvin about his memories of playing against meath and one word trips off the Dublin manager’s tongue –‘bruising’. A hard-working wing-forward in his day, he recalls being marked several times by Colm Coyle, one of the more robust meath defenders of that era. nearly 20 years on, both meath and Dublin are better known for their style, rather than their substance. kildare manager Jason Ryan did point out how hard-hitting meath were in the Leinster semi-final, particularly captain kevin Reilly. But the general perception of meath under mick O’Dowd is that they’re trying to emulate Dublin by playing it fast and fair. so far in the Championship they’ve hit tallies of 7-13 and 2-16, indicating that they possess a clear and present danger to Dublin’s title this weekend. ‘They’ve been very impressive in both their games,’ said Gavin. ‘shooting 9-29 is an impressive return in anyone’s book. They’ve definitely been very impressive, playing traditional meath football. They’re very solid in defence, mobile in their half-back line, midfield and half-forward areas. ‘Then they have multiple threats up front, lots of pace and they’ve shown they can punish teams, both Carlow and kildare. ‘meath also had a good run in the national league so i expect a traditional Dublin/meath game, good, honest, hard football.’ it’ll be the third Leinster final in a row between the teams. meath lost the 2012 decider by three and by seven last year, though they came closer to an upset last year when they led by two at half-time. The indications are that meath’s graph is steadily rising under O’Dowd, though Dublin have pushed on too. Their panel depth has been reflected by their gains from substitutes, 1-18 from the wins over Laois and Wexford. ‘We had a really good contest with meath last year, they were a few points up at halftime,’ recalled Gavin (above). ‘it was just a ding-dong battle and i think we can expect the same next sunday.’

Maradona’s baffled by golden-boy Messi’s win by JOHN PAYNE DIEGO MARADONA has claimed Lionel Messi was embarrassed to be declared best player at the World Cup after Argentina’s final defeat. Eyebrows were raised throughout the football world at the award, with even Fifa president Sepp Blatter admitting he was surprised to have handed the Golden Ball to Messi in the aftermath of Germany’s 1-0 win. Messi scored four goals in the group stages but failed to live up to his billing in the knockout stages and missed a golden second-half chance in the Maracana showpiece. Maradona, who won the same accolade as well as a winners’ medal in

Blatter admitted: ‘I was myself a little bit surprised when I saw Messi coming up to collect the best player of competition.’ The Fifa chief suggested the decision may have been based on the early

Klose: Standing ovation
Future with Germany may still be a Klose call
Scolari pays the price for thrashings BRAZIL coach Luiz Felipe Scolari has left his post in the wake of his country’s World Cup humiliation. The 65-year-old, who led Brazil to victory in Japan and South Korea in 2002, could only manage fourth on home soil. But it was the manner of their failings which spelt the end for the former Chelsea boss. Brazil’s 7-1 semi-final demolition by Germany was their jointheaviest loss ever and they crashed 3-0 to Holland in the third-place play-off. stages of the tournament but Messi himself said winning the Golden Ball was no consolation for missing out on the ultimate prize. ‘In these moments, the prize doesn’t interest me at all,’ said the 27-yearold in the wake of Mario Gotze’s extra-time winner for Germany. ‘We wanted to take home the trophy and enjoy it with all the people in Argentina. It’s very painful to lose in the manner that we did because we were so close to [taking the final to] penalties.’

Miroslav Klose, finally a World Cup winner at the fourth time of asking, will decide over the coming days whether he wants to continue playing for Germany. Twelve years after tasting defeat in the final in Yokohama, Klose took home his first World Cup winner’s medal on Sunday night after Germany beat Argentina 1-0 after extra-time. Klose earned a standing ovation in the 88th minute when he made way for Germany’s match-winner Mario Gotze. Having become the leading World Cup scorer of all time in Brazil, now seems a poignant time for the 36year-old to call it a day, but he may yet carry on. ‘I do not know yet if I will go on with the national team,’ said the striker, who scored his 16th World Cup goal in the 7-1 win over Brazil. ‘We finished second once, were third twice, but this is world-class. I can hardly comprehend it. The team’s performances were important, we wanted to keep our calm because we knew we had the better quality to win it,’ he added.

Fifa chief wants Suarez back in the game soon
Three stripes and Nike out at Utd MancheSter United have agreed a record £750million sponsorship deal with adidas. the announcement comes six days after nike pulled out of negotiations over a new deal because it felt United were demanding too much money. the adidas agreement, described in a statement as ‘a global technical sponsorship and dual branded licensing deal’, will run for ten years from the 201516 season. It is the largest of its kind in world sport and dwarfs the likes of adidas’ deal with real Madrid and nike’s with Barcelona, as well as arsenal’s agreement with Puma announced earlier this year. Meanwhile, Swansea will provide the opposition for the club for its new manager Louis van Gaal’s debut on august 16. the 62-year-old will spend time with his new players at United’s carrington training ground later this week before flying to the USa for the club’s pre-season tour. ‘I’m looking forward to it,’ he said. ‘I hope at Manchester United I can do my best. I will do my best. Whether that’s enough for the fans I will wait and see, but I genuinely hope that will be the case.’

SEPP Blatter hopes to see Luis Suarez back playing football soon. Suarez was sent home from the World Cup in shame after biting Giorgio Chiellini in Uruguay’s group stage win over Italy. Given that it was the third time he had bitten a fellow professional, Fifa’s disciplinary committee banned the forward, who has signed for Barcelona from Liverpool, from ‘all footballrelated activity’ for four months. There was outcry in Uruguay at the ban, but Blatter said the record punishment was completely out of his hands. The Fifa president felt sorry to lose Suarez early from the tournament, and he hopes the Uruguay striker will be ready and determined to represent his country again soon. ‘I feel that such a punishment... it hurts,’ Blatter said at a press conBite ban: Suarez ference in Rio. ‘But as Fifa president I have to accept the decisions taken by our independent committees. ‘I do hope that this player will come back to football because I have seen his capacity technically and tactically to do what he can do – his smelling of the goal... ‘I do hope he will be back, He is now in one of the greatest clubs in the world.’ Prior to the World Cup there were serious fears about security, transport and stadia, but Blatter thinks Brazil 2014 passed the test with flying colours. ‘We were calculating last night using all the computers and facebooks and all that, and then out of ten we came 9.25,’ Blatter said. ‘Brazil has improved since South Africa (whom he rated as nine out of ten). ‘Those who get a clear ten at universities have deals with the professor.’

Jacklin: Ror power alone won’t win Open TOny JackLIn has told big hitters like Rory McIlroy, keeping the ball under control will be far more important than booming drives at this week’s Open, writes Nick Metcalfe. McIlroy stunned the golfing world last week with a 436 yards drive at the Scottish Open. But ahead of the year’s third major of the year at Hoylake, 1969 champion Jacklin said:
‘That was just one shot from Rory. Length is less important at a links course. It’s about control. ‘We’re going to see classic links

keep the ball on the fairway. ‘It’s a very fickle form of golf. Greats like [Tom] Watson and [Bobby] Locke showed it’s patience that wins you Opens.’ One player who will be, as ever, receiving plenty of attention at Royal Liverpool is Tiger Woods, who won for the third time at the course eight years ago. The american has just returned from a three-month injury absence,
and Jacklin told Metro: ‘It’s impossible to say whether Tiger can win it. It’s not going to be easy for him after such a long lay-off. He’s just another player at this stage.’ But Jacklin is sure there won’t be an unheralded winner, like Ben curtis in 2003, or Todd Hamilton in 2004. ‘a seasoned player will win it. The Europeans should have the advantage here.’
