Tulisa: My ‘fake sheikh’ torment SINGER Tulisa Contostavlos told yesterday of her ‘terrible ordeal’ after her trial for allegedly brokering a cocaine deal collapsed when ‘fake sheikh’ Mazher Mahmood was found to be lying. The former X Factor judge hugged her supporters when she was acquitted yesterday, before giving a statement urging police to investigate Mr Mahmood to ‘put an end to his deceits’. The former N-Dubz star said: ‘This whole case was a horrific and disgusting entrapment by Mazher Mahmood and The Sun On Sunday newspaper. ‘Mahmood has now been exposed by my lawyers openly lying to the judge and jury. I have not been able to work for a year and I am now looking

forward to resuming my career.’ The trial ended after Judge Alistair McCreath told Southwark crown court he thought prosecution witness Mr Mahmood ‘deliberately lied’ in evidence at a pre-trial hearing. Mr Mahmood had said he had not seen a statement from his driver, Alan Smith, who picked up Contostavlos and her friends from a hotel as the newspaper trapped the singer in a cocaine sting. Mr Mahmood admitted during the trial he had seen the statement, which was later changed. The Sun On Sunday suspended the reporter – who claims to have helped put more than 100 criminals behind bars – and who could now face a perjury inquiry.

Lego bricks still washing up on beaches after falling off cargo ship in 1997

AS LEGO puzzles go, this one is going to take a long time to put together. About 5million toy bricks that were swept off a cargo ship near Cornwall 17 years ago are still being washed up

on British and Irish beaches – and being collected by diehard fans. Tracey Williams, who started the Lego Lost At Sea page on Facebook, has even had a report of a plastic flipper making landfall in Australia,

by DAniEL Binns while various bricks have been brought ashore in beaches in Kerry. Ms Williams, from Newquay, has collected up to 600 pieces. ‘There’s

stories of kids in the late 1990s having buckets of dragons on the beach, selling them. These days the holy grail is an octopus or a dragon,’ she said. The toys, which also include plastic

spear guns and cutlasses, were thrown overboard by a giant wave that hit the Tokio Express in 1997. Oceanographer Curtis Ebbesmeyer said: ‘Things that go to the bottom of the sea don’t always stay there.’

Zac’s appeal makes Efron the hottest hunk on Earth Hottest hunks

HOLLYWOOD heartthrob Zac Efron has been named the ‘hottest hunk’ of 2014 – ousting Tom Daley, who took top spot in the Heat magazine poll last year. The 26-year-old High School Musical actor, who has said he is getting therapy to deal with his excessive drinking, has moved up three places to steal the crown. The highest new entry in the annual list is Irish actor Jamie Dornan, who will be seen starring in the screen adaptation of Fifty Shades Of Grey next year, and takes eighth place. British Olympic medal-winning diver Daley was runner-up while David Beckham

retained his position in third place. The magazine said Efron’s topless appearance in the movie Bad Neighbours, along with having his shirt ripped off by Rita Ora at the MTV Awards, had secured his place at number one in the 101 Hottest Hunks list. Heat’s editor-in-chief Lucie Cave said users of its website ‘voted in their thousands and selected Zac Efron as the hottest man alive’. George Clooney (pictured left) has seen his appeal waver as he plummets 37 places to number 60. Sherlock star Benedict Cumberbatch was a new entry at number 24, while Prince Harry is at 32, down eight places from 2013.

Anger: Putin is under pressure to pull his special forces out of Ukraine PICTURE: EPa

Leave us in peace, Ukraine tells Vlad RUSSIA was told to end its support for the rebels by Ukraine’s interim prime minister yesterday. Arseniy Yatsenyuk also vowed to bring those behind the shooting down of MH17 to justice. ‘They have to stop, and president Putin has to realise enough is enough,’ he said. ‘What we expect from Russia: To de-escalate the situation, to withdraw their agents, to close the border, to stop their support for these bastards, and to stick to international law and international observations.’ His comments came as leaders around the world threatened harsher sanctions on Russia. In Westminster, British prime minister David Cameron warned ‘the peace of Europe’ was at risk if the West continued to turn a blind eye to ‘bullying’ by Mr Putin. ‘We should not shrink from standing up for the principles which ultimately keep the peace on our continent,’ he said.

BBC reporter is given a victim’s passport on air A BBC journalist was handed a victim’s personal belongings as she reported from the site of the crash. Natalia Antelava was given a Dutch passport and a purse by a rescue worker who didn’t know who to pass them to. Appearing close to tears, she said: ‘It shows how badly organised it is.’ There were 100 complaints after a Sky News reporter rummaged through a suitcase in the debris.

A TRAIN carrying the remains of most of the 298 victims of flight MH17 left the crash site yesterday after the Malaysian prime minister reached a deal with the leader of pro-Russian separatists controlling the area. As the special service left the Ukrainian town of Torez, Najib Razak said the Malaysia Airlines plane’s black boxes would be handed over and international investigators would also be allowed to take control of the crash scene from Alexander Borodai’s rebels. Mr Razak said Dutch officials would receive the dead in Kharkiv before they were flown to Amsterdam on a Dutch C130 Hercules. He added: ‘I must stress that, although agreement has been reached, there remain a number of steps required before it is completed. ‘I ask that all parties continue to work together to ensure that this agreement is honoured. ‘Only then can the investigation into MH17 truly begin; only then can the victims be afforded the respect they deserve.’ Peter van Vliet, the head of a Dutch

team which reached the train yesterday, said his priority was getting the bodies to a place where they could be examined. He called for a ‘forensic sweep of the entire area’, adding: ‘Whether that’s possible I don’t know.’ International investigators were still holed up in Kiev last night as fighting

broke out again in Donetsk, just 50km from the crash site. In Utrecht, scores of victims’ relatives gathered at a behind-closeddoors meeting, where they were consoled by King Willem-Alexander, Queen Maxima and prime minister Mark Rutte. The UN security council last night

condemned the downing of MH17 and demanded that armed groups allow ‘safe, secure, full and unrestricted access’ to the crash site. The 15 members unanimously adopted a resolution demanding those responsible ‘be held to account and that all states cooperate fully with efforts to establish accountability’.

Shock after brothers, 9 and 21, dead in murder-suicide

by ED cARTy

A RURAL community was reeling yesterday after the deaths of two brothers in an apparent murder-suicide. Nine-year-old Brandon Skeffington was found with stab wounds inside the family home in Sligo on Sunday. The body of his brother Shane, 21, was found shortly after in a shed next to the two-storey house built by their father in Banada, near Tubbercurry. After emergency services were alerted, he was taken by air ambulance to Sligo Regional Hospital where he was pronounced dead. It is understood family members tried to revive the younger son while the older of the two was found in the outbuilding at the rear of the property.

n SERVICES on the Luas Red Line were suspended for a short time yesterday afternoon following a collision involving a Bus Éireann bus and a tram in which a Luas passenger was hurt. At around 1.20pm an Expressway Route 30 service from Donegal to Dublin was involved in ‘a small incident’ outside Busáras where the bus and a Luas collided. A passenger on the Luas received medical attention, while no one on the bus was injured. Bus Éireann is investigating what happened and will help gardaí with inquiries.

Gardaí recognised robber by his voice A MAN has been jailed for three years for breaking into a young Cork woman’s house and tying her up with a power cord while he searched for valuables. Wayne Keogh, 34, of Glenaraneen, Brittas, Co Dublin, was caught after gardaí recognised his voice on a recording made when he called a taxi company to take him away from the house. He pleaded guilty to burglary and false imprisonment of Claire Spillane, 24, at Holywell, Dundrum, in August 2012. Judge Carmel Stewart imposed a five-year term and suspended the final two years so Keogh can continue the progress he has made in custody. He has 46 previous convictions.

Rapist gets 7years for 2 more attacks

Tragedy devastating for close community The close-knit community has been devastated by the double tragedy. Local Fianna Fáil councillor Jerry Lundy appealed for the family to be given space and privacy. ‘It’s something you hear about in other countries and cities but not in a quiet rural area,’ he said. ‘The community are shocked. It’s a sad, sad time for the parents.’ There are two other children in the family, a teenage girl and boy, three. Post-mortem examinations on the brothers were carried out at Sligo General Hospital.

A PAKISTANI man jailed in 2005 for the violent rape of three women has received a concurrent sevenyear sentence after confessing to two more attacks. Salman Dar, 33, is serving a 15-year term for the three sex attacks in 2004. At the Central Criminal Court yesterday, Dar – formerly of Abbey View, Ballyhaunis, Co Mayo – pleaded guilty to attempted rape in Ranelagh, Dublin in March, 2004 and oral rape and sexual assault at Synge Street, Dublin in May, 2004. Mr Justice Paul Carney suspended the last two years.

Dana denies hushing sex abuse claims

Water quality at Strand still poor SANDYMOUNT remains off limits for swimmers after the latest batch of tests showed that the water quality there still does not meet minimum bathing requirements. Dublin City Council placed a temporary bathing ban on the southside strand last Wednesday and has been carrying out water quality tests since then. The council said the results of more testing will be available tomorrow and it will issue a further update then. Meanwhile, Met Éireann has issued a yellow weather warning for this week, which will hit the mid-20s and be very humid.

SINGER-turned-politician Dana told a court yesterday she knew her brother would be ‘guilty until proven innocent’ in some people’s minds after allegations of sexual abuse emerged. The former Eurovision winner said she felt ‘it would have been better to be charged with murder’ when the claims about her brother, John Brown, surfaced in the middle of her 2011 Irish presidential election campaign. Brown faces five counts of indecent assault against two girls under the ages of 13 and 16 in the 1970s. He denies all the charges. In the trial’s third week, the jury heard evidence from Dana, her husband Damien Scallon, her brother Gerald Brown and the defendant’s wife Patricia Brown. The latter told the court her husband ‘would not be living under the same roof’ as her and their children if she believed any of the claims were true. Responding to prosecution claims

KEvin McHALE, 26, who plays Artie in Glee, makes his debut as a panel show host on E4’s Virtually Famous – and he’ll keep a keen eye on the viewing figures

What’s Virtually Famous about? It’s a panel show about

popular internet videos and the people behind them. We have a Hall Of Fame section each week. We have the people from videos such as Charlie Bit My Finger and the panel give their opinions about them.

You host the show but had you heard of any of the celebrity panellists on it – Helen Flanagan, for example?

No, I hadn’t heard of her but everyone’s been a great sport about it. We had Rachel Riley on and there was a running joke about how I didn’t know what Countdown was and how I couldn’t grasp the concept of why that show would be popular. Everyone’s been so nice about it and I do read about them before I meet them.

What’s happening with Glee? We shoot the final season

this year and that will be that. My character, Artie, went to New York in the last season and did really well there so I’d like to think he gets to become a big film director and stays there.

Are you surprised it’s lasted

as long as it has? Yes and no.

We had no idea what would happen when it started because shows that involved singing were usually cancelled after one or two episodes. It was a big gamble. It wasn’t immediately popular when it debuted – it did well by word of mouth halfway through the first series. I never thought I’d be on a show that would last for more than 100 episodes.

Has the diminishing viewing figures been a cause for concern? I’m the only one in the

cast who checks viewing figures – everyone else is oblivious. If someone asks me how we did last night, I say: ‘You don’t want to know, just go through your lines.’ We knew the show was going to end with the sixth season so it’s good to be able to prepare mentally for that. Usually you wake up one morning and are told your show’s been cancelled. We’ve had a really good run and Glee has changed TV in a lot of ways. Even if it doesn’t have the ratings it used to, we still have a passionate hardcore fanbase.

What are your own musical tastes? Pretty much anything but

country. I grew up in the 1990s so I really like pop music. I really like Ariana Grande. I saw Sam Smith the other day – he’s massive in the US, which is nice, because it’s not always people who are supertalented who become popular.

What were the highs and lows of being in your boy band, NLT? There weren’t many

highs – we really weren’t very successful. It was good training for Glee, because I knew all about recording sessions, dance rehearsals and touring. When Glee first started and the music did well – the people at the record label would send me the figures each week – and when Don’t Stop Believing got to No.4, I texted Lea [Michele], Corey [Monteith] and Amber [Riley] and told them and they were like: ‘Is that good?’ I was like: ‘You guys!’ Because going from working for years in a boy band and never getting anywhere to suddenly working on a record that sold hundreds of thousands in a week was really nice. It was nice to be associated with something people gave a s*** about.

What were the problems

Dana: Denies allegations of sex abuse against brother John in court yesterday that she knew about the allegations for more than 30 years, but choose to keep quiet, the former MEP said: ‘I absolutely, did not.’ The All Kinds of Everything singer told the jury that the first victim, now 47, had never been to her home in Wembley, north west London, or stayed with her during any of her summer seasons in the 1970s, where some of the assaults are alleged to have taken place. The first alleged victim is currently suing Dana for defamation following a TV3 interview in 2011 in which she said the claims were lies. The trial continues at Harrow Crown Court in London.

We’ve had a really good run and Glee has changed TV in a lot of ways. We still have a passionate fanbase with your boy band? There

were lots of problems. We danced all the time – nowadays boy bands don’t dance, they just walk around. We were also much more r’n’b than they are now. Then there were problems with the label and management. Again I cared about the numbers so I got the figures and called the other guys in the band and said: ‘Do you realise they’ve spent $2million on us and only $4,000 on marketing?’ That’s a problem. Record labels don’t work like that any more. You can launch an act from social media now. Back then, they’d spend a ton of money and not necessarily get any results.

What was the worst gig you did? There’s so many to choose

from. We went on a tour – some shows were completely sold out, others would have 30 girls at the front of the stage and no one else in the building. You’d think: ‘What am I doing?’

What are your ultimate career ambitions? I was told

when I was younger I’d have to choose either singing or acting and I always wanted to do both. I love

music – maybe I’d like to run a record label one day. I’d also like to do more TV and films. Glee happened and all of a sudden I was able to do more, so I want to take advantage of all the opportunities rather than limit myself. I never thought I’d present a panel show. I just want to keep trying new things.

Andrew Williams

Virtually Famous is on Monday nights on at 10pm on E4.

CHARLIE’S 50 SHADES OF GRIEF OVER ROLE

TIME FOR ME TO BANG BANG ON AMERICA’S DOOR Jessie J is relishing a new challenge as she prepares to try her luck in America. Equipped with a new softer image, the singer has stars and stripes in her eyes after teaming up with US singers Nicki Minaj, 31, and Ariana Grande, 21, for new single Bang Bang. ‘The UK can fit into Texas twice,’ she said. ‘If I can fly the flag and be a representation of the UK in America then definitely one wish on my bucket list has been ticked. I’m very excited. I feel like I am back.’

Kim Kardashian’s stepbrother Brody Jenner left viewers reaching for the sick bucket after admitting he became aroused after seeing her pose in a seethrough dress.

Charlie Hunnam is still ‘heartbroken’ over giving up his role in 50 Shades Of Grey because he still feels ‘invested’ in the film. The 34-year-old, who was replaced by Jamie Dornan, said: ‘I was really invested and wanted to work with (director) Sam (TaylorJohnson) and play that character,’ he said of billionaire Christian Grey, one half of the couple in EL James’ erotic novel. Hunnam added: ‘I felt like I had an interesting take on that character and felt like I could have done a good job,’ he said. ‘I really had a clear idea of what I wanted to do. When you put the time into something like that and a character comes alive in your mind, it’s heart-breaking not to be able to play him.’

Former Destiny’s Child Farrah Franklin has been arrested for disorderly conduct in South Carolina. The 33-year-old was booted out of the band after only five months in 2000.

Justin Theroux is fed up with the way his relationship with Jennifer Aniston is portrayed in the press. ‘It’s like, “They’re broken up, they’re together, they’re storming out, storming in, rushing out, rushing in.” They make everyone look like a schizophrenic,’ the 42-year-old grumbled.

T mighT sound like the kind of material used as a plot device in a comic book blockbuster, but it could solve the fuel crisis in the real world. Chemical element thorium is being hailed as key in the hunt for safer and more sustainable sources of nuclear energy. And just like in a hollywood movie, the race is on to be the first to fully harness that power. Named after Norse god (and the marvel comic book hero) Thor by the Swedish chemist who identified it in 1828, thorium has taken almost 200 years to be considered a serious an energy contender. After a period in the 1950s and 1960s in which it flirted with thorium, the US government shut down its research into the radioactive element,

Thorium also produces less radioactive waste than uranium, waste which needs to be secured for hundreds rather than tens of thousands of years. he added that it was extremely difficult to weaponise. But who will be the first across the line in the thorium race? ‘The Chinese have thrown a lot of resources at it,’ said Prof Barlow. ‘i don’t know if they’ll succeed or not. FIVE patients were killed in their beds yesterday as Israeli bombs hit a hospital in Gaza. The strike on the al-Aqsa Hospital, in the town of Deir el-Balah, was the fourth attack by Israeli forces on a medical facility this month. The Palestinian death toll in the two-week conflict has now surpassed 550, mostly civilians, with 25 Israeli military dead and two civilians. Egypt lifted its blockade of Gaza. Israel said it needed to ‘complete the mission’ of neutralising Hamas. Mr Kerry blundered when he was caught

on camera talking about Israeli tactics: ‘It’s a hell of a pinpoint operation... we’ve got to get over there... it’s crazy to be sitting around.’

But when later asked if he thought Israel was going too far in its bombing campaign, he replied: ‘I reacted obviously the way anybody does with respect to young children and civilians, but war is tough.’ Meanwhile, the Government has pledged €500,000 to the United Nations’ emergency appeal for families affected by the conflict in Gaza. The funding will provide food, shelter and healthcare to the thousands of families forced to flee their homes.

US Immigration and Customs Enforcement arrested Mahmoud Bazzi at his home in the Detroit suburb of Dearborn, Michigan. Spokeswoman Gillian Christensen said Mr Bazzi was held for ‘immigration violations’. Defence minister Simon Coveney welcomed news of the arrest in the US and said the Government had continually pursued the case. Mr Bazzi has denied killing Irish peacekeepers Derek Smallhorne and Thomas Barrett, saying he once falsely confessed because he feared a Lebanese militia would kill him unless he lied.

SoUTH AFRICAN police are searching for three men who forced a family from their car and drove off with a four-year-old boy hanging out of the vehicle. The boy was later found dead in the abandoned vehicle. Police are offering a reward of R50,000 (just under €3,500) for information leading to arrests in a case which has shocked South Africans accustomed to a high crime rate. South African media say that the boy was with his sister and parents in Boksburg, east of Johannesburg, during the carjacking on Saturday night. His mother told reporters that her son’s foot had got stuck as she tried to pull him from the car, but the carjackers sped off. The boy’s head and body may have hit the road as the car sped away, causing the fatal injuries.

‘Barbarians at gate’ line no longer cuts it with Gaza conflict

avid Bradley, the ‘barbarians are at the gate’ line has been used successfully by many regimes to control public opinion, but you should look at a map of modern israel. Who is surrounding whom? a look at the history books and the modern israeli state would show where the fanatics are. They’re on both sides of the breach, except one side is armed with the most efficient killing machinery, the other with more primitive rockets. Hamas’s attacks have been as useless as they have been indiscriminate and those of israel have been as tragically lethal as they have been indiscriminate. israel, of course, has the right to defend itself from serious threats, but within reason and proportionately, rather than the hysterical, po-faced and trigger-happy manner we now see. as for Gazans getting their lives back to normal, Mr Bradley clearly has no idea about what ‘normal’ is for them or he wouldn’t be so surprised Hamas has not accepted a ceasefire and why it has such

widespread support and was legally elected by Palestinians before being ousted. a North-style peace process is not possible because of the region’s history, but a start would be Hamas recognising israel’s right to exist and israel ceasing its illegal building of settlements and suppression of the human rights of ordinary Palestinians. Preparation time: 25minutes. Baking time: 20minutes.

Step 1 Preheat the oven to 160°C. Using

a mixer, whisk all the cake ingredients together until creamy. Divide the mixture between the muffin cases and bake for 20minutes, until the cakes are firm and spring back to your touch. Transfer to a rack to cool. Step 2 For the frosting, whisk together the icing sugar, butter, cream cheese, orange juice and zest in a mixing bowl until light and creamy. Spoon into the piping bag and pipe a swirl on top of the cooled cupcakes. Dust the cakes with a little ground cinnamon and decorate with candied carrot peel if you like. SKINNY MINNIE LEMON MERINgUE CUPCAKES These low-sugar, low-fat cupcakes allow us to indulge without feeling too naughty. For a really low-sugar alternative, you can serve these cupcakes without any topping for elevenses – the perfect mid-morning guilt-free treat.

INgREDIENTS (Makes 12)

Preparation time: 25minutes. Baking time: 20minutes

For the cupcakes: 60g light margarine ♦ 225g sugar replacement, such as Splenda ♦ 115g unsweetened apple purée ♦ 2tsp lemon essence ♦ Zest of 1 lemon ♦ 185g self-raising flour, sifted ♦ 2tsp baking powder ♦ 4 egg whites For the meringue: 125g caster sugar (or reduced-sugar substitute) ♦ 2 egg whites ♦ 1tbsp water ♦ A pinch of salt ♦ To assemble: 2-3tbsp low-sugar lemon curd Equipment: mixer ♦ 12-hole muffin tin lined with muffin cases ♦ sugar thermometer ♦ piping bag fitted with large star nozzle ♦ chef’s blowtorch

Step 1 Preheat the oven to 170°C then,

using a mixer, whisk together the margarine and sugar replacement until light and creamy. Mix in the apple purée, lemon essence and zest, flour and baking powder. In a separate bowl, whisk the egg whites to stiff peaks and fold them into the batter.

Step 1 Preheat oven to 160°C. Stir together the flour, salt, baking powder and bicarbonate of soda in a large bowl. Using a mixer, beat together the sugar replacement and margarine. Beat in the flour mixture, then fold in the egg whites together with the vanilla extract. Add the soured cream and milk and mix so that everything is incorporated. Divide mixture between the muffin cases and bake for 20mins, until firm and they spring back to your touch. Transfer them to a rack to cool. Step 2 For the marshmallow, place the sugar, egg whites and water in a large saucepan and heat to 60°C, whisking continuously. Once it reaches 60°C, remove from the heat and pour into the bowl of a stand mixer with whisk attachment. Whisk until the mixture is stiff and glossy peaks are formed. Step 3 Fold in the strawberries, then spoon a mound on each cake and sprinkle with meringue pieces and mini marshmallows or top with blueberries. Best eaten straight away.

Step 2 Divide the mixture between all the muffin cases and bake for 20minutes until the cakes are firm and they spring back to your touch. Then transfer them to a rack to cool down.

Step 3 For the meringue, place the caster

sugar, egg whites, water and salt in a heatproof bowl over a pan of simmering water. Whisk all the time until the sugar has melted and the mixture reaches 60°C. Remove the bowl from the heat and whisk vigorously until the mixture becomes meringue-like.

Step 4 Spread a little lemon curd over the

top of each cupcake. Spoon the meringue into the piping bag and pipe a large swirl on top of each cake. Use the blowtorch to gently caramelise the meringue until it is golden brown. Because of the meringue topping, these cakes are best eaten on the same day that they are made.

App happy Spruce (iOS, free)

It says something about your willpower if you need an app to go three days without alcohol but that’s the aim of Spruce, developed by the British Liver Trust and Nominet Trust. Plan three dry days and then enter a ‘yes’ or ‘no’ if you achieved it. You get notifications to help you stay on track and tips for when you’re at the bottom of a bottle… sorry, glass. Track your progress and the drier you are, the happier the app, your bank balance, and you, should be.

The object is to cut down trees by tapping either side of your screen, avoiding descending branches as you chip away at a mighty oak. Hypnotic, and not necessarily in a good way, the game will drive you insane as your timing goes off skew – a bit like Tetris’s insanity phase – especially if you try singing Monty Python’s Lumberjack Song at the same time.

Civilization Revolution 2 (iOS, €13.99)

As well as virtual empires, strategy game Civ has been building its own real following with games across various platforms since 1991. Civ Rev 2 uses improved smartphone power to bring the game much more in line with its console counterpart but has been developed especially for mobile devices. Features include a race to military technology supremacy, the chance to rebuild Silicon Valley and enhanced 3D graphics. JD

How about a portable work device for less than €300? Yes? Well check out the 13.3inch Toshiba Chromebook. The biggest Chromebook to date, this device is a lovely size – it’s big enough to comfortably work on while you’re on the go but small enough and light enough to throw into your bag. While the shell does feel quite plasticky and sometimes flimsy (press down hard on the touch pad and the whole piece moves), the keyboard of raised tiles feels lovely and is easy to touch type on. Like a tablet, the unit turns on instantly (no waiting for it to boot up) and it’s fast. Running Chrome OS, you’ll need to have a wireless internet connection to get the best out of it. It does not support an ethernet connection. However, it does have two USB ports, a HDMi port, headphone socket and an SD card slot. You can also work offline on Google products such as GMail, Google Docs, Google Drive, etc., and they will update when you go online again. While you cannot install Microsoft Office products, they can be accessed online through the browser. While there are many pluses for this device,

it’s not perfect. I absolutely hated that the traditional caps lock key is replaced on the Toshiba Chromebook with a search button. The speakers in the device are loud, but the sound quality isn’t great – it does better with a decent set of headphones. The screen quality also isn’t brilliant for watching video, but it’s perfectly fine for working on. I’d also add a touchscreen to my wishlist. This device doesn’t have one – but that’s probably down to price more than anything. Overall, I really liked the Toshiba Chromebook. It’s a great affordable, on-the-go work device that won’t weigh you down too much. I would buy this in preference to a tablet. Joanne Ahern Toshiba Chromebook is priced from €299

glasgow shares with other former manufacturing centres, such as Manchester and newcastle, an in-yer-face ballsiness and a love of flashing the cash. its claim to be the best place to shop in Britain outside london stands up: all the top brands are concentrated in the Style Mile. the ‘mile’ takes in Buchanan Street, Princes Square and the Merchant City, and the stores are often housed in fine georgian and Victorian buildings.

city story

the story of the original captains of industry who commissioned those buildings and, later, the elegant terraces of the City’s West End, are told in How glasgow Flourished, 1714-1837, at the Kelvingrove Art gallery and Museum. the exhibition doesn’t flinch from the often unpalatable history of how the city’s tobacco merchants exploited slavery and Scotland’s economic union with the rest of Britain to build vast fortunes, laying the foundations for glasgow to become the second city of empire in the Victorian era. the Zaha Hadid-designed riverside Museum continues that story with moving exhibits of how shipbuilding – and its decline – has defined this area, with its windows overlooking stretches of river that once hives of industry.

The value of Stirling A Battle of Bannockburn re-enactment gives Sheena Davitt the perfect excuse to check out what Stirling has to offer

I

t’s mid-day in a field five minutes’ drive from stirling town centre, and the crowds have been queuing for the past hour to watch two armies of costumed enthusiasts re-enact the Battle of Bannockburn, the famous rout of the English by the scots that took place 700 years earlier. so significant is the anniversary to the scottish that there’s an entire festival, Bannockburn Live, taking place to mark it: more bagpipes, Celtic rock bands and full-kilted American tourists than you will ever see in one place again. As the audience take their seats, there’s a pantomime atmosphere, with loud booing for the English knights (who are having fun riling up the crowd with shouts of ‘scottish peasants’), and cheers for the big lad sitting on an enormous warhorse who’s playing Robert the Bruce. With the independence referendum coming up in just a few months, the battle couldn’t be more topical. And dotted about the festival, you can spot earnest French camera crews pressing battle re-enactors in chainmail for their views on the forthcoming vote. It’s certainly an interesting time to visit scotland – 2014 also happens to be the Homecoming, a year of special events and

festivals laid on for visitors, a bit like the Irish Gathering (well, a lot like the Gathering actually, considering we nicked the idea from scotland’s Homecoming 2009). And for anyone who feels the call of the pipers this year, stirling is a fascinating town to spend a few days in. It’s one of those places that seems to pack in an incredible amount of heritage into one small area. Aside from the Bannockburn battlefield outside the town (which has a new visitors’ centre, as well as the already famous statue of Robert the Bruce), there’s also the epicentre of all the historical upheavals of the past millennium or so: stirling Castle (left). In a country over-run with medieval castles, stirling is one of its best. Viewed from a distance as you approach the town, it’s a fine sight, standing on a crag that dominates the landscape, rather like Edinburgh Castle, but much more striking. A visit there can take up half a day – there’s a lot to take in. Built in the 12th century, and added to by various stewart kings over the centuries, it has links to most of the big names of scottish history – it was besieged by Bonnie Prince Charlie (and Robert the Bruce), was the childhood home of Mary Queen Of scots, and from its ramparts you can see the neogothic William Wallace memorial two miles away, which marks the spot where Braveheart scored a victory over the English (a visit to the memorial tower, a short bus ride away, is worth it for the views alone). Around the castle, there’s more to see in the winding streets of the medieval old town

Do you know what your air carrier should do for you if your flight is delayed or cancelled?

(right) – the Church of the Holy Rude and its graveyard, the restored Victorian prison and Cowane’s Hospital, a 17thcentury almshouse that now houses a café. And if you like architecture, be sure to check out the beautiful Georgian sandstone homes on Albert Place on the way to the smith Museum – they brought on a case of house envy on my part. the surrounding countryside is just as attractive. Although stirlingshire was traditionally a coalmining area, the scenery seems unscathed, mainly rolling farmland, stretching up to the Ochil hills. I did catch a glimpse of the mining heritage at my B&B, West Plean House, a 19th-century building that used to be home to the mine owners – you can tell from the abundance of chimneys. It’s a comfortable spot that would make a good base if you are exploring the region by car – and there’s a lot to see if you’re driving: you’re only an hour from Glasgow, Edinburgh and the Loch Lomond National Park. the guesthouse is a working farm with

extensive grounds, and the friendly owners do a rather excellent cooked breakfast – with venison haggis on the side, naturally. As an invigorating way to start the day, it’s enough to make you want to don some chainmail and join in the nearest historic melee. Bannockburn Live is one of more than 900 events in the Homecoming 2014 programme, which include the Forth Bridges Festival, Whisky Month, John Muir Festival, Ryder Cup Concert, World sheepdog trials and the MtV Europe Music Awards.

Top of the world, Ma: Rory McIlroy and his mother embrace after his Open victory picture: getty McIlroy can expect a boost to his coffers at the club and remembers when McIlroy was a 12-year-old schoolboy whose only aim was through endorsements linked to his new status. JACk NICkLAuS hailed Rory McIlroy for his Open triumph, and the ‘swagger’ he showed in winning at Hoylake. McIlroy went into the last day holding a six-stroke lead and Nicklaus admitted he was impressed with the way he

protected his advantage with a safety-first 71 in the final round. ‘He didn’t take the chances that he did in the other rounds as far as the clubs he hit off the tee.’ ‘Rory didn’t put himself in position to lose the tournament. He did what he needed to do.’

Eighteen-times major winner Nicklaus added: ‘I like his swagger. the way he handles himself. His desire to be great. I like his desire to do the things he needs to do. ‘I like that in a young guy. He’s cocky in a nice way.’

too many good players for mcilroy to dominate Graeme mcDowell was full of admiration for rory mcIlroy’s open victory on Sunday, but does not believe his fellow Northern Irishman can go on to dominate the game. mcDowell feels the talented new generation in the game will make it impossible for mcIlroy to match woods at his prime, the former world number one winning seven of his 14 major titles between august 1999 and June 2002. ‘There’s too many good players. It’s so strong. everyone is so good,’ mcDowell said.

ICO ROSBERG might not have the common touch that led German sports fans to embrace Michael Schumacher, but he did his country proud on Sunday by becoming the first German to win the German Grand Prix in a German car for 75 years. The last was Rudolf Caracciola, also in a Mercedes, in 1939 at the Nurburgring. It capped a dream week for Rosberg. He saw his homeland win the World Cup, got married to his childhood sweetheart Vivian, and won his home grand prix to increase his lead in the world championship in Hockenheim. Qualifying once again proved while the Mercedes may be the quickest car, it is also one of the more fragile. Two weeks on from Rosberg’s car expiring, it was time for Hamilton to retire with brake failure that left him with sore legs, a gearbox that needed replacing, and a start from the pitlane. His race through the field was breathless and impressive. A couple of contacts were inevitable. He broke his front wing trying to pass Jenson Button but kept his head down, the damage hurting his tyres but doing little to dampen his speed. Button was at first critical of Hamilton’s scruffy attempt to pass and accused him of expecting his rivals to move over. After gathering himself, though,

RORy MCILROy’S home club coach has lauded him as a once in a generation player and predicted he could go on to win eight majors. The proud professional at Holywood in Northern Ireland said the country may not see another golfer of the calibre of the precocious schoolboy who rose to the very top. Multi-millionaire McIlroy, 25, could now boost his earning power even more after becoming only the third person after Tiger Woods and Jack Nicklaus to win three major tournaments by the age of 25. There was a party atmosphere on the manicured fairways in hills overlooking Belfast where it all began for McIlroy – who dreamed

of winning the Open from age two or three and used a plastic club. Club professional Stephen Crooks said: ‘He is very much a once in a generation player. I don’t know if we will get anyone else from Ireland who achieves what he is doing. He is unique.’ McIlroy’s two-shot victory at Royal Liverpool on Sunday evening made him only the third competitor from Northern Ireland to win the Open. Among his next goals will be the uS Masters, the last piece of the four-major Grand Slam, and defending his Open title next year. Holywood Golf Club’s honorary secretary Martin Gunning said he was a normal person despite his talent, while Crooks predicted McIlroy could win eight majors, given what he has achieved at such a young age. McDowell: Too much talent

‘I don’t think we’re going to see that dominance again for a while unless somebody comes out who has perfected the imperfectable. I think these guys, the best players in the world, are playing pretty close to as good as you can play, really. This game is hard. ‘You can’t play much better than rory is hitting the ball. That’s as good as it gets.’ Phil mickelson, who mcIlroy succeeded as open champion, agreed with mcDowell’s assessment, adding: ‘we used to say there will never be

another Nicklaus, and then along came Tiger. You never want to discount the possibility of someone dominating. ‘But nobody has asserted themselves week in and week out the way Tiger did for such a long period of time.’ mcDowell feels mcIlroy could benefit from having to work hard to hold off Sergio Garcia’s challenge on the final day at Hoylake. ‘Tiger had that capability of getting it done ugly. Perhaps rory has to prove that he’s got that side to him,’ he said.

In great Nic: German Rosberg won on home soil he apologised for his remarks. The 34-year-old later tweeted to say, ‘after watching the race back I think I overreacted about Lewis’s move. I can understand why he thought I was giving him room’. Without that accident, second would have been Hamilton’s but, under the circumstances, he was justly thrilled with third. It was a terrific race and the fighting prize goes to Daniel Ricciardo. He finished sixth behind Fernando Alonso, with whom he was wheel-to-wheel for much of the second half. Alonso rated it Ferrari’s best race this year. ‘Fifth place was absolutely the maximum,’ Alonso said. ‘I’m very pleased. Daniel is a surprise,’ he added. ‘He is doing unbelievable.’

Williams raising the Bottas bar yet again SECOND place was well earned by Valtteri Bottas, but podiums, he thinks, are boring. ‘It feels really good to be [on the podium] for a third time in a row but we’re aiming for more than that now,’ the Williams driver (pictured) said. His team-mate Felipe Massa threw away a potential podium. He binned it on lap one after first-corner contact with Kevin Magnussen. His car is capable of winning races and a little more caution might prove fruitful.

by JON HARvEy AtlEtiCo Madrid midfielder raul garcia claims Fernando torres would be welcomed back to the la liga champions with open arms if he opts to leave Chelsea. torres has been linked with a move back to Atletico, where the Spain international came up through the ranks to captain the first team before joining liverpool in 2007. And despite the striker, 30, looking a pale shadow of his former self since joining Chelsea for £50million in January 2011, garcia insists torres would fit right back in. ‘i speak to [torres] a lot and he still feels very strongly about this club,’ garcia said. ‘his life has been defined by what he experienced here. he’s another option, just like

But garcia played down the speculation, adding: ‘if we took every transfer story seriously we would only have about two or three players left here. ‘the club has to manage these things, but Miranda is an important player for us.’

celtic boss Deil-ighted with Murrayfield pitch by EDDiE THOMpsOn Ronny Deila believes his Celtic side will have ‘no excuses’ for failing to perform at the home of Scottish rugby in the second leg of their Champions league second qualifier against KR Reykjavik tonight. The match is being played on a brand new pitch at the BT Murrayfield Stadium in edinburgh as Parkhead is out of commission due its use in the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow. The Hoops are 1-0 up from the first leg in iceland and will face either Polish side legia Warsaw or St Patrick’s athletic in the next qualifier if, as expected, they see off the icelandic side. after looking at the Murrayfield playing surface, a mixture of grass and artificial fibres, Deila gave it a ringing endorsement. ‘it is fantastic,’ said the norwegian. ‘it is a very good pitch. i don’t think there will be any problem. ‘The team will have the support and that is important and the pitch is perfect. So no excuses.’ Charlie Mulgrew, skipper in the first leg in place of the injured Scott Brown, was equally praiseworthy of the pitch. He said: ‘if you are not going to play at your home stadium then this is just the perfect place. ‘Preparations have been fine and everything has gone smoothly. it is just another place to

The 34year-old, who led his national side in this summer’s World Cup, said he had ‘agnonised’ over the decision since returning from Brazil. ‘This has been a very difficult decision, one of the toughest I’ve had to make in my career,’ he said. ‘I have spoken to family, friends and people close to me before coming to this point. Brendan (Rodgers, his manager at Liverpool) has been fantastic and obviously I have to look after my body to ensure I can give everything when I take to the field.’

We all know what Celtic fans are like in the Champions league for us so hopefully we can get them behind us.’ The Hoops fans who make their way to the capital will see a familiar Celtic line-up as Deila has only added former Hearts and Sunderland keeper Craig Gordon to his squad so far and he may not even be on the bench if regular no.2 lukasz Zaluska is named as back-up to england cap Fraser Forster. The former Stromsgodset boss continues on the search for new players, which will be vital in the event of the Scottish champions making the group stages, but insists he will not be making signings for the sake of it. ‘We are working to try to get someone in. it is a bad time, it costs more money. it is also about finding the right ones. i am after quality,’ he said. ‘it has to be someone who can come straight in and do something at once and that is very difficult. or get a player who will be a good player in a while.’

Struck down: Republic of Ireland’s Anthony Stokes is out of tonight’s second leg tie through injury

Reykjavik boss taking defence-first approach KR Reykjavik manager Runar Kristinsson will put the emphasis on defence against celtic even though his side are trailing in the tie. The Icelandic side are 1-0 down from the first-leg and expected to exit the competition against the Scottish champions. Kristinsson claimed to

believe his side have a chance to cause what would be a major upset against Ronny Deila’s men but Hoops fans should not expect an open game. ‘It’s a very big task ahead

of us, we had a difficult game against them back home,’ he said. ‘celtic had most of the ball so we’d expect the same. We defended well back home so we’re going to see if we can do that again but mount some better counter-attacks this time and try to hurt them.’

The Birmingham-born fighter has fallen short in his previous three world title bouts, losing bravely to Felix Sturm and Sergio Martinez before being brutally pulverized in a three-round knockout defeat to heavy-handed Gennady Golovkin. The 32-year-old bounced back from the loss to Golovkin by outpointing the previously undefeated Lamar Russ in December, and victory over heiland

would set up a title shot against WBC champion Miguel Cotto. ‘It’s great to have an eliminator to put me straight back in the frame for another world title fight,’ Macklin said. ‘heiland is rated number four with the WBC so I’m sure he will be coming to Ireland with his own ambitions. It’s a must-win fight for me and it doesn’t matter what he brings to the ring, he won’t beat me.’ London 2012 gold medallist Anthony Joshua will also feature on the bill against Ukrainian heavyweight Yaroslav Zavorotnyi, while Commonwealth superflyweight champion Kal Yafai will take on Belfast’s Luke Wilton.

McIlroy’s Masterplan Rory plotting a way to land career Slam by nIck METcALfE RORY McILROY is already planning how to complete his career Grand Slam by winning the Masters, and says the key to it is an amateur who humbled him at Augusta last year. McIlroy’s Open victory means he needs to win the Masters to become just the sixth player in history to claim all four majors. The 25-year-old famously blew a four-shot lead going into the final round in 2011, finishing ten shots behind winner Charl Schwartzel. His solitary top-ten finish at Augusta came this year but only after the ignominy of being beaten by his noncompeting marker in the third round. McIlroy made the cut on four over par and, as an odd number of players advanced to the weekend, played with a marker on Saturday. Augusta member and two-time former Georgia amateur champion Jeff Knox – who holds the course record of 61 from the members’ tees – shot 70, one better than McIlroy. And now McIlroy will seek Knox’s help ahead of his return in April. ‘I’ll be going into Augusta next year pretty confident if I can just figure out the greens a little bit more,’ McIlroy said. ‘What really helped me last year was playing with Jeff Knox. ‘He’s the best I’ve ever seen on Augusta’s greens. ‘I might have to take a couple of trips up before it starts and have a couple of practice rounds with him.’ Ror emotion: McIlroy takes a selfie with some Royal Liverpool members in the clubhouse
