Independent tds Mick Wallace and Clare daly have said they breached security at Shannon Airport yesterday because former Justice Minister Alan Shatter ‘challenged’ them to do so. the pair have said Mr Shatter told them to ‘produce the evidence’ that US military aircraft using Shannon are breaching Irish and international law.

Mr Wallace and Ms daly used a rope ladder to scale a security fence at the airport so that they could search two US military aircraft parked, under armed guard, on a remote taxiway.

Ms daly sustained minor facial injuries after she fell while attempting to scale the fence. the pair got within 100m of the planes before airport police intercepted them. they were arrested and taken to Shannon Garda Station where they were released later without charge.

IT WAS James Brown who sang ‘I feel like being a sex machine’ but even the Godfather of Soul might have struggled to top Mick Jagger’s exploits in the bedroom.

And evidence of the Rolling Stones frontman’s roving eye was there for all to see at the premiere of new Brown biopic Get On Up. Jagger, who produced the movie, was joined by guests including son Lucas and the 14-year-old’s mother Luciana Gimenez – a 43-yearold Brazilian model Mick met backstage at a Stones gig in 1998.

Tolka fish kill incident under investigation DUBLIN City Council and Inland Fisheries Ireland is investigating an overnight pollution incident in the Tolka River which has resulted in an extensive fish kill.

In a statement, the City Council confirmed the presence of a foam-like substance in the river. It said that staff from its Drainage Services Division have taken water samples for analysis and have placed ‘a boom wall barrier’ across the river at Griffith Park to prevent the foam from spreading downstream.

Meanwhile, Inland Fisheries added that the full extent of the kill ‘has yet to be quantified’.

Local councillor Noel Rock said: ‘This is a great disappointment, and whoever is found to have caused this needs to be held responsible.’

Union gives €10k to binmen Youth stole to feed drug habit THE Unite trade union has donated €10,000 to the Siptu Greyhound Workers’ Support Fund, warning the recycling company that it is not ‘simply dealing with a small group of workers. You are dealing with the trade union movement’.

Unite’s chief Jimmy Kelly made the comments at the Clondalkin picket line while leading an international delegation of union members.

He added that ‘the workers can count on our solidarity.’

Meanwhile, Greyhound has called on Siptu to ‘control’ its picketing members, citing health and safety issues when picketers come into contact with vehicles at depots.

Siptu says its 70 members have been ‘locked out’ of the company since June 17, after rejecting wage cuts of up to 35 per cent.

EUrOvISIOn Song Contest winner and former Irish presidential candidate Dana rosemary Scallon covered up her brother’s sexual abuse of two under-age girls for decades, a court has heard.

John Brown, 60, is accused of five counts of indecent assault against two girls under the ages of 13 and 16 at different times and locations in the north and England during the 1970s.

He denies the alleged abuse or that his 62-year-old sister helped him to cover up the allegations. But Claire Howell, prosecuting, told a jury of six men and six women at Harrow Crown Court in London the pair had both lied in Mr Brown’s three-week trial.

‘This defendant says that the complainants are lying, he says that this is a wicked conspiracy involving both women,’ Ms Howell said in closing.

‘He says that all the witnesses who have given evidence for the prosecution are part of an evil conspiracy to accuse him of abuse that he did not commit. It’s no sophisticated conspiracy, it’s a cover-up from many years

And she claimed the defendant had confessed the abuse to several people, saying of one of the complainants: ‘She came on to me.’

Ms Howell added: ‘This family, the defendant and his sister, have known about this for years.’

Blood donations fell 4% Survey finds many savers last year, report reveals aren’t down with the Dirt BLOOD donations were down just over four per cent in 2013 compared to 2012, a report by the Irish Blood Transfusion Service (IBTS) has revealed.

Some 82,697 donors made 135,547 donations, compared to 85,762 donors making 141,350 donations in 2012. The drop is attributed to the decline in use of blood and platelets which has had a ‘serious impact’ on the organisation’s income.

A spokesperson said: ‘It is unclear what the exact reasons

are but undoubtedly some of them are less wastage, improved surgical techniques, reviewing at hospital level of transfusion practice and less elective surgery taking place due to the cutbacks in health spending.’

IBTS chief executive Andy Kelly said the trend poses ‘a major challenge’.

‘While there may be some scope for further reduction in costs, this will not be sufficient to meet the expected reduction in income,’ Mr Kelly said.

THREE-QUARTERS of Irish adults have a deposit account but don’t know they’re paying 41 per cent tax on interest earned. The Standard life Survey of more than 1,000 people revealed that 61 per cent don’t know what rate of deposit interest retention tax (Dirt) is payable on their interest earned.

Two-thirds (68 per cent) think current deposit rates are bad value for money. This is especially true for those aged

65 or over, of whom 88 per cent consider deposit rates to be poor value. The average person has €20,500 on deposit and nearly a fifth have between €10,000 and €50,000 saved.

Sinead Cullen of Standard Life said: ‘Tax on deposit interest earned can be up to almost half because Dirt of 41 per cent is payable as is four per cent PRSI for certain savers. Many are now earning as little as one per cent or roughly half that after taxes.’

‘I know who I am now,’ she adds, ‘and I’ve been able to make the music I wanted to make. All areas of my life are kind of covered. Of course I still get stressed – there’s always something, isn’t there? But I’m happy, really happy.’

Bailegangaire, which translates as ‘town without laughter’, is one of Tom Murphy’s most complex, demanding and arresting works. It’s good news then that the venerable Druid theatre company isn’t afraid of a challenge: in 2012, under the aegis of director Garry Hynes, they presented three of Murphy’s works – Conversations On A Homecoming, A Whistle In The Dark and Famine – as a back-to-back, nine-hour epic.

With shades of Beckett, Bailegangaire sees a bedridden old woman, Momma, recite a meandering tale about a village laughing contest but denies her two granddaughters – and by extension, the audience – the luxury of a punchline. To supplement this production, Murphy has penned a companion piece, Brigit, which is set in the same household 30 years earlier. Panned on its 2010 release and panned to this day – so why not grab a drink to blot out the pain and judge for yourself? Johnny Depp plays a maths teacher (yes, really) who becomes embroiled in Angelina Jolie’s scheme to help her criminal boyfriend evade the police. High jinks are meant to ensue but instead critics found it difficult to stay awake.

My childhood on a deserted island

I

grew up in central London in a house without a garden but every year we would spend the summer on my dad’s uninhabited Hebridean island off the west coast of Scotland. The island was tiny – if you stood at its highest point you could see the sea all around you – and when we first went had no habitable houses except for abandoned crofters’ cottages and Viking king ruins.

A boatman would drop us off and pick us up two weeks later.

Then my dad renovated an old crofter’s cottage and we would stay there the whole summer. There was nothing else on the island apart from ruins and birds – no electricity, no TV and certainly no mobile phones – so in the evenings my dad would tell us old Viking stories, including one about

I was con convinced the hill behind our house look looked just like the back of a sleeping dragon, too, and on stormy nights I w would imagine that the dragon might shak shake off its incarnation and w wake up.

Because of the w way we were living, I felt something of ho how real Vikings might have felt living there and, of course, real Vikings used to believe in dragons...

The stream of hands dipping in and out of seat pockets makes them a germ heaven, particularly for cold and flu bacteria. The Auburn study found MRSA could survive for seven days inside seat back pockets and it’s known cold viruses can survive for several hours. It’s also an area the cleaners are likely to forget.

A recent study from Auburn University, Alabama, found MRSA and e coli bacteria can survive in a plane for almost as long as your holiday. MRSA, which although rare can be fatal, can stick around for a week, while e coli – stomach cramps, diarrhoea and vomiting – survives for up to four days.

Dr Michael Schmidt from the Medical University of South Carolina has carried out his own work on infectious diseases. He says planes are ‘a prime mixing ground’ for microbes.

‘Bacteria bump into each other while moving around within confined spaces such as planes,’ he says. ‘they exchange antibiotic resistant information, meaning we’re more likely to encounter germs we’ve no resistance to.’

With this in mind, we’ve identified the biggest germ hotspots on board a plane – and how to avoid bagging the bugs.

how to avoid it: If you must keep your reading material in the seat back pocket, keep it in a separate carrier bag and wash your hands or use a hand gel after reading the material inside the pocket.

The Tray Table

That fold-down tray table you eat your in-flight meal off?

Parents who can’t face the cramped toilets are prone to using it as a nappy-changing table. Although it’s usually given a quick wipe-down after flights, that’s not enough to prevent germs breeding. The Auburn study found diseasecausing bacteria including MRSA can live for up to a week on tray tables. how to avoid it: The simple answer is to wash your hands or use hand gels, particularly those that are EPA or European Community registered. Make sure it has an alcohol content of at least 30 per cent – alcohol is an extremely effective disinfectant – and apply before and after eating. Use your own tissues instead of the napkins provided and use an antibacterial wipe to clean your tray table.

No surprise here but traces of E coli and faecal bacteria have been found in plane toilets while the US Center for Disease Control said aircraft toilets were major risk isk areas for Sars and bird flu.

Sars (inset) is a rare but potentially fatal respiratory virus spread through touch or water.

Although most cases are passed on through bird contact, it’s thought the virus has been passed from person to person. To complicate matters, each toilet on a plane could be used by up to 100 people per flight and the taps – designed to shut off after a few seconds – can make washing your hands difficult. how to avoid it: Use paper towels to touch the toilet lid and hand gel after washing your hands.

Pillows/ blankeTs

It’s thought a third of the weight of your pillow at home could be made up of dead skin, house dust mites and their faeces, so a pillow used by hundreds hundr of passengers a week will be a haven for microscopic nasties.

In previous studies, germs found on pillows and blankets include the aspergillus niger

fungus, which can lead to pneumonia. And just because the pillow is wrapped in plastic doesn’t mean it’s been properly cleaned, either.

A 2007 investigation by the Wall Street Journal found several major airlines only cleaned blankets every five to 30 days (unless there was visible staining). how to avoid it: Bring your own pillow and wear easily

Drinking waTer

Traces of E coli have been picked up in tests on drinking water supplied on planes. Bear in mind that the water in the plastic cups doled out by the cabin crew doesn’t always come from bottled water but from storage tanks.

Additionally, the aircraft may have restocked in countries with questionable water quality.

People often associate E coli with food poisoning but it

can also be caught from contaminated water. how to avoid it: Avoid ice or water given out mid-flight. Take your own water on board and

removable layers so you can keep warm without reaching for the blanket. If you’re short on space, take a pashmina or scarf that can double as a pillo pillow.

It’s important to stay hydrated as some studies have suggested airline passengers are less able to resist infection because the dry air impairs the body’s defences.

Sipping is better because gulping liquids flushes them straight through your system.

Sip the equivalent of 200ml of water for every hour of flying.

Dublin star Eoghan O’Gara is in the clear after disciplinary chiefs opted not to pursue allegations of biting during Sunday’s leinster football final defeat of Meath.

A lack of evidence was cited by the GAA’s Central Competitions Control Committee (CCCC) when they contacted both counties yesterday evening to confirm the news.

Meath were initially contacted on Monday afternoon and given 24 hours to submit their version of events following allegations by manager Mick O’Dowd that defender Mickey burke was bitten.

And when asked whether he’d consider a punditry job on Irish TV, Keane cheekily responded: ‘It depends on the money.’

MANCHESTER United enter a new era in America tonight when Louis van Gaal takes charge of the Reds for the first time.

United play Los Angeles Galaxy in Pasadena in the early hours, their first match of a two-and-a-half-week US tour ahead of the new season.

It will be the club’s fringe players like Tom Cleverley, Darren Fletcher, Ashley Young, Nani and Wilfried Zaha who will be most under the spotlight in the friendly encounter.

Zaha joined from Crystal Palace last year but soon fell out of favour with then boss David Moyes and was loaned to Cardiff in January.
