HUNGOVER PAR: Rory McIlroy’s prized Claret Jug was conspicuous by its absence as the newly crowned Open champion met the North’s First Minister Peter Robinson (left) and Deputy First Minister Martin McGuinness at Stormont Castle yesterday. It turns out the noble trophy is still recovering after a night out on the Belfast tiles with McIlroy and his entourage that saw the silverware used as a Jägermeister decanter. ‘It actually needs a bit of a clean after last night,’ McIlroy said picture: pa

Independent tds Mick Wallace and Clare daly have said they breached security at Shannon Airport yesterday because former Justice Minister Alan Shatter ‘challenged’ them to do so. the pair have said Mr Shatter told them to ‘produce the evidence’ that US military aircraft using Shannon are breaching Irish and international law. Mr Wallace and Ms daly used a rope ladder to scale a security fence at the airport so that they could search two US military aircraft parked, under armed guard, on a remote taxiway. Ms daly sustained minor facial injuries after she fell while attempting to scale the fence. the pair got within 100m of the planes before airport police intercepted them. they were arrested and taken to Shannon Garda Station where they were released later without charge. ‘We’ve been raising the issue of US military use of Shannon for the last three years in the dáil,’ Mr

Wallace said following their release. Ms daly said: ‘Alan Shatter basically challenged us to produce the evidence and that’s what we’ve tried to do. He said he’d do something if we produced the evidence.’ ‘Last year, 630 US military aircraft either passed through Irish airspace or landed in Shannon. You wouldn’t have this kind of movement of aircraft without them being involved in some military activity.’

Mick’s son with model looks is a chip off the old rock star at movie screening

Smooth like Jagger... IT WAS James Brown who sang ‘I feel like being a sex machine’ but even the Godfather of Soul might have struggled to top Mick Jagger’s exploits in the bedroom. And evidence of the Rolling Stones frontman’s roving eye was there for all to see at the premiere of new Brown biopic Get On Up. Jagger, who produced the movie, was joined by guests including son Lucas and the 14-year-old’s mother Luciana Gimenez – a 43-yearold Brazilian model Mick met backstage at a Stones gig in 1998. There was no mistaking the resemblance between the dapper youngster and his rocker dad – whose affair with Gimenez was the final straw that led Jerry Hall to

by SHAROn MARRiS leave him in 1999. Lucas worked the camera like a young Mick – all in black and sharing his father’s long locks and wide grin. Great-grandfather Jagger, 70, regularly spends time with his love child – but there was a rather more awkward family reunion for relatives of Brown at the New York screening. The funk legend’s fourth and last wife Tomi Rae Hynie, 45, attended with their 13-year-old son James Brown II but the star’s other children were clearly keen to give the pair a wide berth. Brown had little time for his older children and Hynie – who married Brown in 2001 – said the family treated her ‘like dirt’ after he died in 2006.

Tolka fish kill incident under investigation DUBLIN City Council and Inland Fisheries Ireland is investigating an overnight pollution incident in the Tolka River which has resulted in an extensive fish kill. In a statement, the City Council confirmed the presence of a foam-like substance in the river. It said that staff from its Drainage Services Division have taken water samples for analysis and have placed ‘a boom wall barrier’ across the river at Griffith Park to prevent the foam from spreading downstream. Meanwhile, Inland Fisheries added that the full extent of the kill ‘has yet to be quantified’. Local councillor Noel Rock said: ‘This is a great disappointment, and whoever is found to have caused this needs to be held responsible.’

He added that ‘the workers can count on our solidarity.’ Meanwhile, Greyhound has called on Siptu to ‘control’ its picketing members, citing health and safety issues when picketers come into contact with vehicles at depots. Siptu says its 70 members have been ‘locked out’ of the company since June 17, after rejecting wage cuts of up to 35 per cent.

EUrOvISIOn Song Contest winner and former Irish presidential candidate Dana rosemary Scallon covered up her brother’s sexual abuse of two under-age girls for decades, a court has heard. John Brown, 60, is accused of five counts of indecent assault against two girls under the ages of 13 and 16 at different times and locations in the north and England during the 1970s. He denies the alleged abuse or that his 62-year-old sister helped him to cover up the allegations. But Claire Howell, prosecuting, told a jury of six men and six women at Harrow Crown Court in London the pair had both lied in Mr Brown’s three-week trial. ‘This defendant says that the complainants are lying, he says that this is a wicked conspiracy involving both women,’ Ms Howell said in closing. ‘He says that all the witnesses who have given evidence for the prosecution are part of an evil conspiracy to accuse him of abuse that he did not commit. ago, at a time when you might think that cover-ups of this sort did happen for various reasons. ‘And, having covered it up, it’s very difficult for them to come clean about it for various reasons.’ Ms Howell said Mr Brown and his sister had given a ‘slick presentation’ to the court but what the complainants remembered most was how they felt when they were allegedly abused. And she claimed the defendant had confessed the abuse to several people, saying of one of the complainants: ‘She came on to me.’ Ms Howell added: ‘This family, the defendant and his sister, have known about this for years.’

Blood donations fell 4% Survey finds many savers last year, report reveals aren’t down with the Dirt BLOOD donations were down just over four per cent in 2013 compared to 2012, a report by the Irish Blood Transfusion Service (IBTS) has revealed. Some 82,697 donors made 135,547 donations, compared to 85,762 donors making 141,350 donations in 2012. The drop is attributed to the decline in use of blood and platelets which has had a ‘serious impact’ on the organisation’s income. A spokesperson said: ‘It is unclear what the exact reasons

are but undoubtedly some of them are less wastage, improved surgical techniques, reviewing at hospital level of transfusion practice and less elective surgery taking place due to the cutbacks in health spending.’ IBTS chief executive Andy Kelly said the trend poses ‘a major challenge’. ‘While there may be some scope for further reduction in costs, this will not be sufficient to meet the expected reduction in income,’ Mr Kelly said.

THREE-QUARTERS of Irish adults have a deposit account but don’t know they’re paying 41 per cent tax on interest earned. The Standard life Survey of more than 1,000 people revealed that 61 per cent don’t know what rate of deposit interest retention tax (Dirt) is payable on their interest earned. Two-thirds (68 per cent) think current deposit rates are bad value for money. This is especially true for those aged

65 or over, of whom 88 per cent consider deposit rates to be poor value. The average person has €20,500 on deposit and nearly a fifth have between €10,000 and €50,000 saved. Sinead Cullen of Standard Life said: ‘Tax on deposit interest earned can be up to almost half because Dirt of 41 per cent is payable as is four per cent PRSI for certain savers. Many are now earning as little as one per cent or roughly half that after taxes.’

He was speaking after meeting UN secretarygeneral Ban Ki-moon, who also met Palestinian leaders in the hope of brokering a ceasefire. Mr Netanyahu said: ‘What we’re seeing here with Hamas is another instance of Islamist extremism, violent extremism that has no resolvable grievance. Hamas is like Isis, Hamas is like alQaeda, Hamas is like Hezbollah, Hamas is like Boko Haram.’ The death toll has risen to more than 600 Palestinians and 29 Israelis. Officials said among the dead were six members of a Palestinian family – including five children – of German nationality. More than 100,000 people are said to be taking refuge in UN schools. Park your tolerance – gigs are hell for Marlay residents...

B

igupthegigup, here’s my experience to balance yours out: walking for miles with a lot of heavy baggage when my bus route was diverted and receiving verbal abuse from drunken teenagers staggering out of the park. Diversity of culture? Not a jot – they were all white, middle-class kids as far as the eye could see. Furthermore, unlike Croke park, the Aviva and the O2, Marlay park is a park and should be treated as such: open to the nonpaying public as a place to enjoy the peace and beauty of nature instead of finding it a rubbish tip. You think the concerts are beneficial to the economy? the café on the grounds appears to suffer during the concert season as locals avoid the place like the plague. i can only pity the resident wildlife who don’t get any financial benefits for putting up with the concerts. So no, not everyone’s enjoying their summer. No To Bad Music, Ballinteer ■ patrick Spillane, although you have a

point on the quality of weapons, i am not sure on quantity as hamas has enough arms sponsors. the iDF is not hiding behind schools, hospitals or highly populated residential areas. people get notice to move – if they don’t it’s because they either support hamas or are being forced by it. hamas still wants to wipe israel off the map. On world safety, i’d rather have a new Zion than a new global islamist state. Looking at the enlightened rebels in Syria and iraq, this would be a ticket back to the Dark Ages. hamas is the monster here. Barry ■ in the cinema recently, i asked some women (i stress women as one repeatedly told me she was a ‘grown-up’ and i ‘can’t tell her what to do’) would they mind keeping it down as they were nattering away for 40minutes. i was polite about it but one girl leaned over to have a go at me for my request while the other said we should move if we didn’t like it. is it OK to talk in the cinema? is it OK to ask someone to keep it down? La Roux on sex in pop

La Roux has always been applauded for not conforming to sexualised pop-female stereotypes. But with the dawn of Miley Cyrus’s twerking and other such antics, how does she feel about the current pop scene? ‘Female pop stars can do whatever they want – I’m not telling them to go inside and put their clothes on,’ she says. ‘It’s about saying that if women do want to take their clothes off, can

we just not aim it at seven-year-olds? That’s my only point.’ La Roux says she doesn’t mind artists following Madonna’s lead in using their sexuality (right). ‘She made it artistic and she knew exactly what she was doing. Now I feel it’s often just an excuse to get attention. I’m sure if I stripped naked and released a

eRRR… does he Like it oR not? a way to be successful and… quiet,’ she says, ‘Of course even the attention I have now does seem very weird but it’s normalised, whereas when I was 21… but it’s not like I get mobbed. I also had to develop a lot as an artist. ‘However big what I did before was, I didn’t know who I really was or where I was going. It was a little bit like flying by the seat of my pants.’ La Roux’s Grammy-winning debut was totally in sync with the music trends of the time – and a remix of In For The Kill

video, a million people would watch it as well – purely to go, what the HELL, La Roux’s naked? Not because they thought it was hot, just because it was shocking. It’s a cheap way to get attention, and it’s too easy.’

While ex-bandmate Ben Langmaid has been tweeting a lot of praise for the new album (on which he gets five co-writing credits) he’s also shared some less favourable views. So what is he really thinking? Your guess is good as ours… I’ve got loads of credits as engineer on the album. Funny that cos I’m the worst engineer I’ve ever known #TIP by Skream, just as dubstep was reaching its zenith, went stratospheric. The new album is something else entirely – a more organic, groovier, sexier selection of tracks she loosely dubs ‘ragga disco’. She seems to have hit her creative stride with a new writing partner, engineer Ian Sherwin, replacing Ben Langmaid. The split, rooted in artistic differences but becoming personal, means Jackson and Langmaid haven’t spoken for two years. ‘I wouldn’t do something that drastic unless I was unbelievably serious,’ she says of parting with Langmaid. ‘It wasn’t whimsical, on either of our parts.’ With her androgynous, Tilda Swinton-esque vibe, Jackson has always faced speculation about her sexuality and her private life – and several songs on the new album, such as Cruel Sexuality

“Ben you are a great engineer and Elly is a multiinstrumentalist. ;)” massive lol Er triangle I think (on the instruments Jackson played) The guys an idiot. He couldn’t write a nursery rhyme (on Sherwin, again) (‘Why must you keep me in your prison at night?’) are bound to set tongues wagging. But she says the album is half personal, half story-telling – and won’t be drawn on which is which. ‘I want my private life to be f***ing private,’ she says. ‘And I don’t think it’s interesting to talk about what I do on the weekend – it’s not like I go to space.’ Nevertheless she will go so far as to say she has ‘a home life that I have been very happy in for years’. ‘I know who I am now,’ she adds, ‘and I’ve been able to make the music I wanted to make. All areas of my life are kind of covered. Of course I still get stressed – there’s always something, isn’t there? But I’m happy, really happy.’

BAILEGANGAIRE / BRIGIT

Bailegangaire, which translates as ‘town without laughter’, is one of Tom Murphy’s most complex, demanding and arresting works. It’s good news then that the venerable Druid theatre company isn’t afraid of a challenge: in 2012, under the aegis of director Garry Hynes, they presented three of Murphy’s works – Conversations On A Homecoming, A Whistle In The Dark and Famine – as a back-to-back, nine-hour epic. With shades of Beckett, Bailegangaire sees a bedridden old woman, Momma, recite a meandering tale about a village laughing contest but denies her two granddaughters – and by extension, the audience – the luxury of a punchline. To supplement this production, Murphy has penned a companion piece, Brigit, which is set in the same household 30 years earlier. The double-bill, directed by Hynes, features a quintet of Druid stalwarts: Jane Brennan, Marty Rea, Marie Mullan (pictured), Aisling O’Sullivan and Catherine Walsh. Oct 1 to Oct 5, Olympia Theatre

My childhood on a deserted island

I

grew up in central London in a house without a garden but every year we would spend the summer on my dad’s uninhabited Hebridean island off the west coast of Scotland. The island was tiny – if you stood at its highest point you could see the sea all around you – and when we first went had no habitable houses except for abandoned crofters’ cottages and Viking king ruins. A boatman would drop us off and pick us up two weeks later. Then my dad renovated an old crofter’s cottage and we would stay there the whole summer. There was nothing else on the island apart from ruins and birds – no electricity, no TV and certainly no mobile phones – so in the evenings my dad would tell us old Viking stories, including one about

Cressida Cowell tells Claire Allfree what inspired her smash-hit children’s series How To Train Your Dragon a dragon that had been turned into a hillside on the nearby Isle of Mull. I was con convinced the hill behind our house look looked just like the back of a sleeping dragon, too, and on stormy nights I w would imagine that the dragon might shak shake off its incarnation and w wake up. Because of the w way we were living, I felt something of ho how real Vikings might have felt living there and, of course, real Vikings used to believe in dragons... Islands are extraordinarily resonant for children. Think of all

Carefree: Cressida Cowell (above and below left) listened to dragon tales told by her father the children’s books that feature them: Peter Pan, Treasure Island, some of enid Blyton’s Famous Five books, Swallows And Amazons. Islands are children-sized; children find them easy to claim as theirs. I realise now how incredibly lucky we were to have had such a childhood: these days we are so protective of our children, we rarely afford them that much freedom. Me and my siblings spent our days on the island by ourselves – having adventures, putting on plays and, when it rained, telling each

other stories by candlelight. My parents were always utterly blithe about the possibility of us having an accident. Had one of us broken a leg, or worse, we would have had to have waited for the boatman to come back to get to the mainland. The idea of growing up and being responsible for oneself is very much at the heart of my How To Train Your Dragon books, which are about the adventures of a young Viking who lives on an island, and Toothless the Dragon whom he has initiated into his clan. But also

Dear Cheryl, quite why you held on to your philandering husband’s name for the last four years is a mystery (though probably has something to do with a publicist advising against a return to Tweedy and those pesky toilet attendant fisticuff charges). But I digress. Marrying within mere months of meeting someone is an act of lunacy, but marrying a moneyed playboy – Jean-Bernard – takes foolhardy to another level. You can have an exacting approach to situations and someone may be on the end of your acute observations today. However, don’t push your side too much. If you can move forwards in a spirit of co-operation, there is so much to be gained.

Samuel L Jackson may have had to deal with snakes on his plane but he had it easy, says Tamara Hinson

The stream of hands dipping in and out of seat pockets makes them a germ heaven, particularly for cold and flu bacteria. The Auburn study found MRSA could survive for seven days inside seat back pockets and it’s known cold viruses can survive for several hours. It’s also an area the cleaners are likely to forget.

J

etting away this month? Better pack the sanitiser. A recent study from Auburn University, Alabama, found MRSA and e coli bacteria can survive in a plane for almost as long as your holiday. MRSA, which although rare can be fatal, can stick around for a week, while e coli – stomach cramps, diarrhoea and vomiting – survives for up to four days. Dr Michael Schmidt from the Medical University of South Carolina has carried out his own work on infectious diseases. He says planes are ‘a prime mixing ground’ for microbes. ‘Bacteria bump into each other while moving around within confined spaces such as planes,’ he says. ‘they exchange antibiotic resistant information, meaning we’re more likely to encounter germs we’ve no resistance to.’ With this in mind, we’ve identified the biggest germ hotspots on board a plane – and how to avoid bagging the bugs.

how to avoid it: If you must keep your reading material in the seat back pocket, keep it in a separate carrier bag and wash your hands or use a hand gel after reading the material inside the pocket.

Germs on a plane! The Tray Table

That fold-down tray table you eat your in-flight meal off? Parents who can’t face the cramped toilets are prone to using it as a nappy-changing table. Although it’s usually given a quick wipe-down after flights, that’s not enough to prevent germs breeding. The Auburn study found diseasecausing bacteria including MRSA can live for up to a week on tray tables. how to avoid it: The simple answer is to wash your hands or use hand gels, particularly those that are EPA or European Community registered. Make sure it has an alcohol content of at least 30 per cent – alcohol is an extremely effective disinfectant – and apply before and after eating. Use your own tissues instead of the napkins provided and use an antibacterial wipe to clean your tray table.

The ToileT

No surprise here but traces of E coli and faecal bacteria have been found in plane toilets while the US Center for Disease Control said aircraft toilets were major risk isk areas for Sars and bird flu. Sars (inset) is a rare but potentially fatal respiratory virus spread through touch or water. Although most cases are passed on through bird contact, it’s thought the virus has been passed from person to person. To complicate matters, each toilet on a plane could be used by up to 100 people per flight and the taps – designed to shut off after a few seconds – can make washing your hands difficult. how to avoid it: Use paper towels to touch the toilet lid and hand gel after washing your hands.

Pillows/ blankeTs

It’s thought a third of the weight of your pillow at home could be made up of dead skin, house dust mites and their faeces, so a pillow used by hundreds hundr of passengers a week will be a haven for microscopic nasties. In previous studies, germs found on pillows and blankets include the aspergillus niger

fungus, which can lead to pneumonia. And just because the pillow is wrapped in plastic doesn’t mean it’s been properly cleaned, either. A 2007 investigation by the Wall Street Journal found several major airlines only cleaned blankets every five to 30 days (unless there was visible staining). how to avoid it: Bring your own pillow and wear easily

Drinking waTer

Traces of E coli have been picked up in tests on drinking water supplied on planes. Bear in mind that the water in the plastic cups doled out by the cabin crew doesn’t always come from bottled water but from storage tanks. Additionally, the aircraft may have restocked in countries with questionable water quality. People often associate E coli with food poisoning but it

can also be caught from contaminated water. how to avoid it: Avoid ice or water given out mid-flight. Take your own water on board and

removable layers so you can keep warm without reaching for the blanket. If you’re short on space, take a pashmina or scarf that can double as a pillo pillow.

use this to brush your teeth if you need to. It’s important to stay hydrated as some studies have suggested airline passengers are less able to resist infection because the dry air impairs the body’s defences. Sipping is better because gulping liquids flushes them straight through your system. Sip the equivalent of 200ml of water for every hour of flying.

O’gara bite allegation is dropped by Royals by pAuL kEAnE

Dublin star Eoghan O’Gara is in the clear after disciplinary chiefs opted not to pursue allegations of biting during Sunday’s leinster football final defeat of Meath. A lack of evidence was cited by the GAA’s Central Competitions Control Committee (CCCC) when they contacted both counties yesterday evening to confirm the news. Meath were initially contacted on Monday afternoon and given 24 hours to submit their version of events following allegations by manager Mick O’Dowd that defender Mickey burke was bitten. Photographs and video evidence showed burke’s finger making contact with Dublin forward O’Gara’s mouth area. burke then appeared to complain to referee Padraig Hughes of being bitten, though he didn’t make any submission to this effect in the sub-

Rough ugh stuff: Mickey Burke grabs gr hold of Dublin’s Eoghan O’Gara’s face sequent investigation. in the absence of a conclusive statement from burke or Meath officials, the CCCC decided they hadn’t enough evidence to propose any punishment for O’Gara and the case was dropped. Dublin county board chairman Andy Kettle confirmed last night

that the issue is ‘done and over with’ though declined to make any further comment. Meath secretary Francis Flynn outlined how the situation developed from Meath’s side. ‘We discussed the situation on Monday night and sent in our submission to Croke Park,’ said Flynn.

‘The matter was then dealt with by the CCCC and we were informed that due to insufficient evidence there will be no charges brought against any players. That would be the end of it now as far as we’re concerned.’ burke himself was seen as an aggressor in the 63rd minute melee that led to the bite claim and was yellow carded, along with O’Gara and Meath goalkeeper Paddy O’Rourke. O’Gara was praised by some commentators for his restraint following rough treatment by both burke and Meath captain Kevin Reilly. Yesterday’s outcome means both teams can move on and prepare for their upcoming games in the All-ireland series. Meath play Armagh in a Round 4b qualifier tie on Saturday week at Croke Park. Dublin, who demolished Meath by 16 points at the weekend to claim a ninth leinster title in ten seasons, face as yet unknown opposition in the quarter-finals on August 9.

bOxing Northern Ireland boxer Paddy Barnes has branded Commonwealth Games drug test timings a ‘disgrace’ and insisted the procedure could have put his participation in Glasgow in doubt. Barnes and team-mate Michael Conlan were singled out for random testing after training on Monday and the 27year-old double Olympic bronze medallist was kept up until 2am by doping officials. Barnes told reporters: ‘I could have got cold or sick but they didn’t care – they just cared about getting urine.’

Tough talking: Keane and O’Neill

coaching duo bring energy to bord gáis REPUBLIC of Ireland management duo Martin O’Neill and Roy Keane are never short of opinions, and last night at the Bord Gáis Energy Theatre they gave their views on a range of topics including World Cups, diving, crying and punditry. Launching Club Ireland, the FAI’s new premium seat packages, the pair talked openly about Roy’s decision to withdraw from World cup punditry duties, quipping: ‘It’s not the first World Cup I’ve missed out on.’ And when asked whether he’d consider a punditry job on Irish TV, Keane cheekily responded: ‘It depends on the money.’

‘It’s not the first World Cup I’ve missed out on’ While discussing Ireland’s Euro Qualifier chances, the duo also talked about the trend of diving in the game, with Keane saying it is a ‘cultural thing’ Irish players don’t do. Quizzed about players crying before a big game, Keane said he ‘scratches his head’ when he ‘sees lads crying at games’, but when asked if that included rugby’s John Hayes, he said: ‘No, not him. He can cry all he wants.’ The interview was broadcast live on The Last Word yesterday evening, with Matt Cooper’s show extended to 7.30pm to allow for questions from the public, but you can listen to it on Todayfm.com. MANCHESTER United enter a new era in America tonight when Louis van Gaal takes charge of the Reds for the first time. United play Los Angeles Galaxy in Pasadena in the early hours, their first match of a two-and-a-half-week US tour ahead of the new season. It will be the club’s fringe players like Tom Cleverley, Darren Fletcher, Ashley Young, Nani and Wilfried Zaha who will be most under the spotlight in the friendly encounter. Zaha joined from Crystal Palace last year but soon fell out of favour with then boss David Moyes and was loaned to Cardiff in January. He admitted: ‘For me, I definitely feel like this is a clean slate. ‘All I’m trying to do is impress the new manager and get into his squad. All I can do is give my all. Leading 1-0 from the first leg in Iceland, the Hoops wasted little time as defender van Dijk helped himself to a brace within 20 minutes. Teemu Pukki grabbed a third before the break and struck again in the second half to set up a third qualifying round clash with either St Patrick’s Athletic or Polish side Legia Warsaw. With Celtic Park out of commission due to its use in the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, the Hoops were forced to switch the tie to the home of Scottish rugby. But they showed no sign of being unsettled. Kris Commons played Pukki through, only for the Finnish striker to drive straight at Stefan Magnusson. Celtic took the lead in the 13th minute when Commons’ corner was headed towards goal by captain Charlie Mulgrew and, with Magnusson flailing, the ball came off van Dijk on its way in. The Hoops’ second also came from a corner. Mikael Lustig headed back across goal and, with Magnusson grasping thin air, van Dijk headed into an empty net. Celtic were threatening to rack up a rugby score as Pukki tapped in on 27 minutes after being set up by Callum McGregor. The Hoops kept up the pace after the restart with Leigh Griffiths’ snap-shot from 20 yards hitting the side-netting. Pukki got his second in 71 minutes when he rounded Magnusson on the edge of the box before slamming the ball high into the net.
