But Daniel Radcliffe came up with a new disguise to mingle, completely unrecognised, with the masses at Comic-Con in San Diego.

The 25-year-old spun his own web of deceit to walk, incognito, among fans – by dressing up as Spider-Man. The disguise was so good he even stopped to pose for pictures with fans, who had no idea they were in the

Despite spending most of his life building up the remarkable 38,000-item archive, retired architect Peter Moloney wants to hand it over to a suitable institution to preserve it.

The often unsettling record of the conflict – including propaganda, pamphlets and posters – has attracted interest from world-class museums such as London’s Victoria and Albert, but Mr Moloney, 63, a Donegal-born son of

Irish emigrants to London who painstakingly gathered the memorabilia from the age of 15, said he would like the collection to be on public view in Ireland.

Criticism of Christianity knows no limits, says bishop THOUSANDS of pilgrims who climbed Croagh Patrick yesterday were told by the Archbishop of Tuam that people who were reluctant to criticise other religions felt they could say anything they wanted about Christianity.

Archbishop Michael Neary, speaking at 10.30am mass after climbing the Co Mayo mountain on Reek Sunday, said different standards were applied when commenting on religions.

Around 30,000 climbed Croagh Patrick yester-

day, with about two dozen people having to receive treatment after becoming ill or injured.

Archbishop Neary said that the same respect should be shown for all religions.

‘In civilised society anyone who dishonours the faith of Israel, its image of God or its great figures must pay a fine. The same is true for anyone who insults the Koran and the convictions of Islam.

‘But when it comes to Jesus Christ and that which is sacred to Christians there seems to be a

different standard; freedom of expression knows no limits,’ he added.

Good weather contributed to the large number of pilgrims who made their way to the mountain outside Westport. Mayo Mountain Rescue treated a number of casualties during the day, including one man who had to be airlifted to hospital after suffering cardiac problems. Others were treated for falls while one man required assistance after trying to make the climb while heavily intoxicated.

Hamas calls for ceasefire but continues to fire off missiles

The group appeared to endorse a call by the UN for the pause in fighting to respect the Muslim holiday of Eid al-Fitr, which is due to start today.

Firing continued after the ceasefire was declared but witnesses said Israeli shelling and Hamas missile launches later became less frequent.

Each side blamed the other for scuttling the efforts. Hamas said that ‘due to the lack of commitment’ by Israel, it resumed its fire.

Israeli prime minister Benjamin Netanyahu told CNN: ‘Hamas doesn’t even accept its own ceasefire.’

He said he would ‘take whatever action is necessary to protect our people’.

While they did not live together, they share a pug called Teddy (pictured above). He lives with 26-year-old Leinster and Ireland prop Healy, but it is as yet unknown if he will have to face a Kramer Vs Kramer-style ‘pug-of-war’ over his ownership.

Friends of the pair are believed to be shocked at the split.

‘I was really uncomfortable being recognised but now I’ve just embraced it and I’ve learnt to see it as more of an inspiration than anything else,’ he revealed.

‘I could be at the park running and these kids will want selfies but I’ve learned to embrace it rather than be like “oh s**t I can’t do this”.

‘You never know, it might make someone’s day. That’s how I’ve learnt to deal with fame.’

And after keeping his identity a secret throughout the start of his career, he confessed he finds it much harder now to keep an air of mystery around himself.

‘I’m trying not to be (all over the place). I’m trying to keep the mystery but it’s becoming difficult.’

There are new faces on the latest series of your Alternative Comedy Experience – who’s a highlight? Kevin McAleer from

Tyrone. He’s one of the people who really inspired me when I started out.

TV channel Comedy Central is very concerned about demographics – 16 to 24-year-olds – but Kevin’s an example of how a lot of older artists’ works are often more radical and surreal and interesting than young people’s.

The show celebrates the unsung heroes of the scene. Did you ever ask Jerry Sadowitz to be in it? Yeah, and he wouldn’t do it. There’s

no way he’d do it. Jerry doesn’t even like being seen on stage. There are lots of people who don’t really want to be on television because they want to hold on to the context and quality of their stuff. So I would never have expected him to do it in a million years.

What criteria do you want your acts to fulfil? Well, mainly: ‘Did I

like them?’ But not just that. Some of them I don’t like but I think they’re really good – they’re just not to my taste. They’re all the sort of comedians that comedians like. They’re not necessarily TV faces and if they are, it’s

While 25 per cent report in sick, around the same number spend lunch hours daydreaming about their next trip, the poll by foreign exchange company Travelex found.

Based on responses from 2,000 in-work adults who had been on holiday, the survey also showed nearly half admitted to being distracted and forgetful at work when returning from a break.

BuMpING fists rather than shaking hands could reduce the spread of infectious diseases, researchers have said.

Academics came to the conclusion following a series of tests on hand hygiene. using rubber gloves and a thick layer of the potentially deadly bacteria E coli, scientists exchanged handshakes, high fives and fist bumps before working out which greeting gesture was the cleanest.

High doses of bugs were passed on during a handshake. However, that was reduced by more than half during a high five and 90 per cent when bumping fists.

Senior lecturer at Aberystwth university in west Wales Dr Dave Whitworth said the hygienic nature of the fist bump was in part due to its speed as well as there being a smaller contact area. ‘people rarely think about the health implications of shaking hands. But if the general public could be encouraged to fist bump, there is a genuine potential to reduce the spread of infectious diseases.’

Dr Whitworth added the study, published in the August edition of the American Journal of Infection Control, was inspired by increased measures at promoting cleanliness in the workplace.

do – I doubt Alternative Comedy Experience will be recommissioned. It’s been buffeted about. I don’t think it fits the channel’s brief. Getting the Comedy Vehicle series recommissioned was very convoluted. It wasn’t on the basis of audience figures. I can’t get any of the things made I want to get made.

degree of inertia setting in. You have to keep moving because even I admit that the stylistic things I do have become tropes. So you have to stop doing them yourself. And, over the past few years, I’ve made some money, so it would be dishonest to write material that gave the impression I was still living the same kind of life I did ten years ago.

Would you want your kids to follow in your footsteps? They can do what

they want but I wish they didn’t know we were comedians.

My son didn’t know but I think kids at school told him.

You’re married to a comedian. Do you ever argue over what’s funny?

No – we don’t have much idea what the other person is up to.

Does it ever get awkward when you bump into people you’ve criticised on stage, like Michael McIntyre? I don’t

move in those sort of circles. I saw Michael at the Baftas after I’d done some jokes about him, and I shook his hand and said good luck to him.

But it’s not just jokes, there’s a character thing at work. If I look like a jealous, petty-minded idiot, it’s probably what I wanted to do. I do work quite hard at not being likeable – I’d rather people responded to the material. I would prefer people to like it in spite of me. Sharon Lougher

The 1,000-page document, which includes the words ‘Houston, we’ve had a problem’, was compiled by British journalist John B. Phillips.

It is expected to fetch more than €6,000 when it is sold in London by Christie’s in September.

Apollo 13’s mission was aborted after a fire in an oxygen tank. Christie’s James Hyslop said the Apollo 13 flight in 1970 was famous for ‘its edgeof-the-seat drama’.

Anti-Israeli sentiment a refuge for something sinister?

sn’t it strange that crises and conflicts flare up around the world all the time yet political classes and ordinary civilians pick and chose which ones to latch on to and make noise over. the amount of bitter anti-Israeli invective I’ve come across in this country from people who usually have no interest whatsoever in world affairs is bizarre and more than a little worrying. the same people who had nothing to say about atrocities perpetrated by al-Qaeda, Isis, Boko Haram, regimes in the Middle East or dictatorships (and democracies) further afield are suddenly screaming their vitriol towards Israel, comparing them to the nazis and netanyahu to Hitler.

Hamas’s actions in this conflict have been appalling as well. Yet, amazingly, these overnight experts

never utter a word about it breaking ceasefires prematurely, aiming rockets at nuclear plants, storing rockets in schools or its general desire to have Israel wiped off the map, etc.

Dare I say it, people’s resentment of Zionist politics is getting muddled with something deeper and darker.

Colombian singer Shakira has become the first person to receive 100m ‘likes’ on Facebook, but will it really help her career? And is social media anything other than a huge popularity contest? ROSS McGUINNESS reports.

Shakira’s nearest human challenger in terms of Facebook likes is footballer Cristiano Ronaldo, followed by fellow music stars Eminem and Rihanna.

The problem with Facebook, however, is that many of these fans don’t exist – as many as 10million of Shakira’s followers are estimated to be fake profiles, while her timeline is littered with examples of spam as cybercriminals try to cash in

on her online fame.

But among her fans who are actual real people (three out of ten of them are called Maria and one in ten is called José), she is obviously doing something right.

using Facebook via selfies, quick video blog posts and sharing more personal moments.

‘Likes are the lowest value social action a person like Shakira can get on Facebook, but they are still powerful as they signal to Facebook’s sophisticated algorithm that her content is interesting and popular.

‘This will lead to it getting more reach and exposure within Facebook. It also helps Shakira – or her PR team – spot what types of content her fans like to see, and that they should post more of.

‘Liking something is also very expressive for the person doing the liking. It’s someone saying, “This is what I like… this is who I am”.’

He said he wasn’t surprised by Shakira’s popularity on Facebook, given that it lends itself to more visual content than, say, Twitter.

While Shakira is the Lady of the Likes, the undoubted Queen of the Tweets is Katy Perry, who has 54million followers.

In an age where famous people detail every moment of their lives – however mundane – on social media, will there come a time when fans want their pop stars to come with a dose of mystery? No, says Navarra.

Famke gets her fangs out famke Janssen is out of her body bag and back in Hemlock Grove. She’s getting used to this TV lark, writes Andrew Williams

‘T

he last time we saw Olivia, her son had bitten her tongue out and she was in a body bag,’ laughs Famke Janssen.

‘It doesn’t set things up for a lovely, cushy relationship between them this season.’

Janssen is referring to the premise that kicks off the second series of supernatural Netflix drama hemlock Grove – at which her character, back-from-the-dead vampire-esque schemer Olivia Godfrey, is the epicentre.

The bitten-off tongue also accounts for Janssen’s change of accent – this time around she speaks in her own voice rather than in the strange mid-Atlantic tones of the previous series, which attracted some derision from critics. In fact the entire show has divided opinion.

It was pitched as Twin Peaks meets True Blood but, with its labyrinthine plots involving werewolves, vampires, drug deals, love triangles, family feuds and clones, it seems a bit closer to a mix of late, lamented 1990s daytime soap Sunset Beach and The Vampire Diaries. Although it’s proved surprisingly popular in Latin America.

ANSSeN was born in the Amsterdam suburbs 48 years ago but left as a teenager, moving to the US to model for high-profile fashion campaigns. her acting career kicked off when she played Bond villain Xenia Onatopp in 1995’s Goldeneye; later she won awards for a recurring role in Nip/Tuck.

But she isn’t much of a TV fan herself. ‘I’d prefer to spend ten hours writing something than ten hours watching something,’ she says, revealing the only TV show she’s binge-watched has been Twin Peaks – when preparing for the first series of hemlock Grove.

‘Other than appearing in one season of Nip/Tuck, I have limited experience of television,’ she says, ‘so I enjoyed the Netflix model of doing a ten-episode series. It’s like shooting ten one-hour movies or one ten-hour movie. You get to develop your character, have a longer arc, and don’t have the rules of a network series such as having a cliffhanger at the end of each episode.’

What’s it like to still be playing Jean Grey in the X-Men franchise 14 years on from the original film? We had no idea it would be such a big hit. i never dreamed i’d be part of such incredible franchises – first the Bond franchise and now X-Men. it’s been wonderful.

Were you disappointed by the treatment Jean got in X-Men 3? X-Men 2 looked like your character turning into Phoenix was being set up for a bigger part in the film... i wouldn’t say i was disappointed because it’s not as if my expectations were that high but fans may have been disappointed because the Phoenix storyline was so tremendously important in the comic books

e didn’t invent it but Common is widely acknowledged as a standard bearer of conscious hip hop.

The genre deals in socio-political, spiritual and moral issues and is prone to both dippy cosmic waffling and sanctimonious finger wagging but Common has never been guilty of either.

He’s earned his place in hip hop’s premier league by staying true to his principles (his alias is short for common sense) and his Chicago heritage, while keeping up with contemporary beats and rhymes.

He’s prepared to push his own boundaries and potentially upset the faithful, too, as electric Circus, his (terrific) record of psychedelic soul, jazz and rock from 2002 showed.

This, his tenth studio LP, sets Common’s surprisingly tough raps against a series of leaner and darker backdrops than is usual, due largely to the production style of No ID, a fellow Chicagoan and long-term collaborator.

The album title was inspired by their troubled home town, its music intended ‘to motivate and inspire’. It’s an aim made most obvious by Kingdom – which deals with balancing belief with the battle to survive and features Vince Staples plus a gospel choir – and the powerful Blak Majik, where loops of urgent chanting are overlaid by Jhené Aiko’s hypnotic vocal.

More radical is the clattery and minimalist Speak My Piece, which samples the Notorious BIG, while for Rewind That, Common borrows J Dilla’s psychedelic hip hop style to

But this kind of sound needs an extra something – the sleek soulfulness of Jessie Ware perhaps, or the brittle heartache of London Grammar, or minimalist tension of The XX themselves.

John ‘Bubbles’ o’Dwyer struck two killer goals in thurles to send tipperary cruising through to the All-Ireland hurling semi-finals, leaving Dublin with a winter of discontent ahead.

In truth, there never looked any doubt about the outcome as Dublin played second fiddle for much of a one sided contest that never found a spark. for Dublin, the potential ramifications of defeat are huge. the most obvious one is that Daly may walk away after six years in charge having annexed two pieces of major silverware in that time. then there is the question of what players may join him or simply retire anyhow.

Players like Conal Keaney, niall Corcoran and stephen hiney are all in the veteran category now and have some big decisions to make.

Most disappointing will be the fact that against Kilkenny in the leinster final – and again yesterday – they never reached anything close to peak performance.

Sharp Tipp pops Dubs’ title bubble Another experienced player, Michael Carton, summed it up well afterwards when he pointed out that ‘you have to go out there and want the ball – we didn’t want the ball out there’.

All involved with Dublin will try to figure out exactly why that was in the coming weeks. their season is over while tipp march on to a semi-final clash with Munster champions Cork. tipp were never extended and must feel they have another gear or two to go up having added Dublin to a list of Championship casualties that includes offaly and Galway.

By half-time in thurles, the writing was on the wall for Dublin who trailed 0-15 to 0-7.

Paul Ryan had a penalty saved after the restart and fans who had journeyed south questioned if it was going to be their day. they got their answer soon after when o’Dwyer hit two goals for tipp to effectively kill the contest. free-taker seamus Callanan top scored for the Premier County with a dozen points, though it was o’Dwyer’s goals that Dublin will have nightmares about. his second came after Alan nolan had initially saved from Patrick ‘Bonner’ Maher and o’Dwyer followed up. on a difficult day for Dublin, Alan McCrabbe top scored with five points, all from frees, while the rest of the points were spread out among nine players.

DEFEAT came on the double for Dublin hurling in Thurles where the county minors also slipped to an agonising All-Ireland quarter-final defeat.

Dubs boss Pat Fanning was undone by his native county with Shane Ryan grabbing both goals for the Deise who are now just two games from a successful title defence.

Ryan’s first goal came after 11 minutes and separated the sides at half-time when Waterford led 1-8 to 0-8.

Dublin were much improved on their Leinster final showing against Kilkenny. They were only caught out by an interception by Patrick Curran that led to Ryan’s opener.

Waterford did lead 1-6 to 0-3 at one stage in the half, but Dublin fought back with fine scores from the likes of free taker Chris Bennett and Rian McBride.

Dublin drew level in the third quarter. But a second goal by Waterford in the 41st minute was a hammer blow.

Skipper Ryan was on the mark again and soon after they led by six, 2-13 to 0-13.

The best Dublin could do was reduce their arrears to two points as Waterford held on for a semi-final clash with Kilkenny.

Meanwhile, Galway hammered Antrim 2-20 to 0-9 to secure a clash with Limerick in the other semi-final.

Scoreline flattery won’t ruffle Ryan ahead of Cats quARTER-finAL lIMERICk...................4-26 wExfORD....................1-11 Boss TJ Ryan reckons resurgent Limerick met a jaded Wexford side at just the right time in the Championship.

Beaten Munster finalists Limerick brought a dramatic end to Wexford’s breakthrough campaign with four goals and a 24-point win. The quarter-final success secures them a semi-final shot at Kilkenny, a repeat of the 2007 final.

But winning manager Ryan was quick to claim that Limerick aren’t as good as the scoreline suggested – and Wexford aren’t nearly as bad.

It was Wexford’s fourth big game on consecutive weekends, having previously beaten Waterford and also taken two matches to dump out holders Clare.

‘I think to be fair to Wexford, playing

four weekends on the trot, at this level, this intensity, extra-time against Clare, it probably caught up on them today,’ said Ryan. ‘our fellas probably took advantage.’

It was a win that marked Limerick out as realistic title contenders all the same. They dispatched Wexford by half-time when they led 3-15 to 0-8 in Thurles. shane Dowling (left) led the scoring siege

Paul Browne got Limerick’s fourth goal shortly after the restart. There was a consolation Wexford goal late on through shane Tompkins, though they lost captain Matt o’Hanlon to a red card in injury-time.

The only downside for Limerick ahead of a semi-final clash with Kilkenny was Donal o’Grady’s absence. He had a hushed-up calf injury, though boss Ryan is hopeful he’ll back in a fortnight and should face the Cats.

LeWIs HaMILTon defied team orders on the way to a vital third-place finish as his title fight with nico Rosberg threatened to turn nasty at the Hungaroring, writes Adam Hay-Nicholls.

Hamilton started at the back of the grid but carved his way through the field to finish third with a mixture of fine driving and canny strategy after a race shaped by wet weather and two periods behind the safety car.

Daniel Ricciardo (pictured) won for Red Bull, with Ferrari’s Fernando alonso second and Rosberg – who started on pole for Mercedes – finishing fourth, his lead over Hamilton cut from 14 points to 11.

However, the race was overshadowed by the refusal of Hamilton to let team-mate Rosberg pass prior to the German’s final stop.

Rosberg was heard on the team radio complaining, querying why Hamilton would not let him pass.

Ignoring the request, Hamilton declared: ‘I’m not slowing down for nico. Tell him to get closer.’ Before the late drama, all of the top four had led in a race that started after a brief downpour, was interrupted by two crashes, continued with the ever-present threat of rain and finished on a knife-edge.

Ricciardo, who had led earlier in the race and was on fresher tyres, swept past Hamilton three laps from the end and overtook a determined alonso to regain the lead for good with two laps to go.

Behind them, Rosberg – who had also made three stops to alonso and Hamilton’s two – was closing remorselessly and was all over the back of his teammate’s car as they started the final lap.

However, Hamilton hung on after earlier disregarding calls from the team to let Rosberg pass.

Felipe Massa secured fifth for Williams and Ferrari’s Kimi Raikkonen had his best result of the season in sixth.

Vincenzo will now seek end of world’s rainbow

VINCeNzo NIbalI is targeting the world champion’s rainbow jersey after completing a hat-trick of Grand Tour triumphs by winning the Tour de France in Paris yesterday.

The Italian, winner of the 2010 Vuelta a espana and 2013 Giro d’Italia, became the sixth rider to win all three Grand Tours, after Jacques anquetil, Felice Gimondi, bernard Hinault, eddy Merckx and alberto Contador.
