Sex offender’s fake 1D tweets by aoife nic arDghail

THE Director of Public Prosecutions is seeking an order to prevent a convicted sex offender from contacting children online after a court heard he was using Twitter to claim he worked for the band One Direction. Brian Mulvihill, 36, was sentenced to 12 years in prison in 2007 for what a judge called ‘an appalling’ aggravated sexual assault on a young woman. Shortly afterwards he received a fiveyear term for a separate sexual assault. Mulvihill, originally from Kilkee, Co Clare, but with a current address of Tyrconnell Road, Inchicore, was released under supervision in 2012. Yesterday, a court heard he had taken an adult education course on which four women made complaints against him. He has also set up seven or eight Twitter accounts on which he falsely claims to work for One Direction. Mulvihill said in his tweets he was a friend of band member Niall Horan and asked fans to get in contact if they had any questions. Gardaí told Judge Mary Ellen Ring in Dublin Circuit Criminal Court this was concerning as the band are very popular with young girls. The DPP’s submission asked the court to order that Mulvihill not be allowed to use the internet to contact minors, or to contact other sex offenders. It also wants him banned from consuming alcohol or changing his name. Judge Ring adjourned the matter.

Tragic: Colm and Peter

Tribute to mountain climbers MOUNTAINEERING Ireland has paid tribute to the two Irish climbers who lost their lives on Mont Blanc over the weekend. The bodies of 55-year-old Peter Britton, from Tipperary, and his 37-year-old friend, Colm Ennis, from Waterford, were discovered in the Dent du Geant area of the snow-capped peaks in eastern France on Sunday. It is understood that the pair died instantly after falling around 200 metres. Mountaineering Ireland’s Karl Boyle said: ‘Peter and Colm would have been well prepared, well equipped and fully aware of the risks. They had significant Alpine experience and climbed together for many years.’

It’s car-nage as motorist escapes parade of zombies IT COULD have been a scene from hit TV drama The Walking Dead. A terrified family find their car besieged by a stumbling zombie horde. And with no AK47 handy for those telling head shots, there is nothing for it but to put the pedal to the metal and get out of there doublequick. But in this case, as the driver sped away, he knocked aside pedestrians and seriously injured

a 64-year-old woman. The drama unfolded when children in the car were scared by people taking part in the Zombie Walk for the Comic-Con event in San Diego, California. The driver, who – like the rest of his family – is deaf, rolled slowly forward, honking his horn, to get through the crowd. Some of the

angry ‘undead’ climbed on the car and broke the windscreen. As the 48-year-old driver fled, the woman fell under the car. ‘Her arm was badly scraped. It will need surgery,’ said a witness. By-standers chased the car for several blocks. Police are investigating.

You’ve got to sand it to them… GETTING sand in one’s shoes is a nightmare for some but not for sand sculpture duo Duthain Dealbh, who bring their giant sand sculptures to the city this week. Now in their 12th year exhibiting at Dublin Castle, the team are building three pieces of work on the Upper Courtyard of the grounds using an impressive 80 tonnes of sand. Duthain Dealbh’s Daniel Doyle, who is carving this week, said: ‘This year, we’ve chosen the theme Black, White and Grey and we use them as a starting point for each of the sculptures – we take those words, black, white and grey, and we start exploring what they actually mean to us.’ His current work is called Letting Go – it shows a carved man and woman turning away from a cut-out heart. ‘It’s about relationship break-up and that moment of: is it over, is it not? It’s not a simple black and white situation; it’s the grey area,’ he said. Doyle began his sculpting career with colleague and Duthain Dealbh co-found-

er Niall Magee after graduating in Fine Art Sculpture from DIT nearly 16 years ago. The duo create their fleeting sculptures in sand, ice and snow internationally throughout the year. One wonders how a big mound of sand can withstand the elements, but unlike Homer Simpson’s sugar pile, these sand structures won’t fizzle at the mercy of the elements. ‘Rain doesn’t really cause a problem. A bit of it every now and then helps dampen down the sand,’ he said. And what about letting it go, knocking down the art work? Sledgehammer? ‘We usually have diggers. The sand gets so hard when you’re finished you really need a big machine to take it down. ‘It’s kind of nice that no one can actually own the piece. That way, it’s like it’s in the eye of the beholder. So everyone takes it away with them.’ Visit the sand sculptures, while they are still standing, at Dublin Castle until August 21.

Sideways move for justice chief after damning review

Ordered review: Fitzgerald

THE Department of Justice’s top civil servant has asked to be moved to other duties within the public service, the Government has said. The sudden departure of its secretary general, Brian Purcell, came as a review of the department was published yesterday. The report was ordered by Justice Minister Frances Fitzgerald shortly after she replaced Alan Shatter, who resigned in May following a series of Garda scandals. Among the findings were that civil servants in charge of the country’s policing and justice system have a closed, secretive and ‘silo driven’ culture and that ‘overall departmental culture has not changed or adapted

by ED CARTy to the world in which it now operates.’ The criticism confirmed significant leadership and management problems after scandals led to the resignations of Garda Commissioner Martin Callinan and Mr Shatter earlier this year. The review said that relationships with the bodies it oversees tend to be informal and unstructured and senior civil servants have a ‘deferential relationship’ with An Garda Síochána. Ms Fitzgerald said Mr Purcell’s resignation is another important step in the reform of the department which ‘must become a 21st century organisation to meet 21st century challenges’.

Ex-FF minister Callely jailed for fraud FOrMEr junior minister Ivor Callely was yesterday jailed for five months for fraudulently claiming mobile expenses while he was a senator after a judge ruled his position at the time was an aggravating factor in the case. The case was adjourned last week to allow prosecutors to make submissions on whether Callely’s position at the time of the fraud should warrant extra punishment. ruling yesterday, Judge Mary Ellen ring said: ‘This is not a case of a simple mistake or indeed overstretching boundaries. While politicians are not expected to be superhuman, they are not expected to rely on entitlement for explaining misbehaviour or indeed criminal acts,’ the judge added.

Callely: Suggested a deceased former business partner was responsible for the fake claims Earlier the court had heard that Callely, 56, of St Lawrence’s road, Clontarf, used invoices from defunct businesses to claim expenses under an Oireachtas scheme which allows members to claim €750 for mobile phones every 18 months.

Callely became aware of the scheme in August 2007, shortly after being appointed senator, and he began claiming expenses at 18-month intervals and also submitted retrospective invoices from his time as a Fianna Fáil TD. He claimed €4207.45 in total using six invoices. The court heard that during his Garda interview in 2012, Callely suggested a former business partner, who was deceased by that time, was responsible for the fake claims. The fraud came to light when a journalist made a Freedom of Information request for details of some of these expenses, prompting Callely to withdraw the claims and repay some of the expenses. Gardaí then began investigating.

Mr Callinan had stepped down in March following revelations phonecalls in and out of Garda stations had been recorded for decades and allegations that the offices of the Garda Ombudsman had been bugged. Expressing confidence in her staff yesterday, Ms Fitzgerald said the issues were bigger than one person after the review found additional pressure and increased workload. Meanwhile, Sinn Féin’s Pádraig Mac Lochlainn called on Taoiseach Enda Kenny to clarify what role Mr Purcell had in the resignation of Mr Callinan, following a visit by the secretary general to the Commissioner’s home the night before he stepped down.

Bolt kills Baywatch beachgoer

A FATHER was killed and his nineyear-old daughter left badly injured when a small plane struck them as it crash landed in the US. They were walking along a Florida beach when the Piper aircraft lost power and came down next to the water’s edge. Ommy Irizarry, 36, was later pronounced dead. His daughter, Oceana, was airlifted to hospital where she was in a critical condition last night. Sarasota County sheriff’s office said: ‘A man and one of his children who were walking on the beach were

by AiDAn RADnEDGE apparently injured by the plane.’ The pilot – named as Karl Kokomoor, 57 – had issued a distress call. ‘He knew he couldn’t make it back to the airport and was going to try to land on the beach. And he did land at the edge of the water on the beach,’ the sheriff’s office added. The Federal Aviation Administration launched an investigation. It said the plane, which was carrying passenger David Theen, 60, at the time, had apparently lost power in midair.

LIGHTNING strikes killed one man and injured 12 other beachgoers on the normally sun-kissed sands where TV’s Baywatch was often filmed. The 20-year-old victim was among nine people taken to hospital after the rare summer storm on Venice Beach in LA, with four others treated at the scene. Stuart Acher said he was hit while playing volleyball. ‘It felt like someone punched me in the back of my head,’ he said. ‘My calves sort of locked up, and I fell over. And I looked up and everybody else was falling over.’ A 57-year-old golfer was said to be in a stable condition after he was also hit by a lightning bolt on Catalina Island, south of LA.

The former X Factor judge spoke out after telling how she tried to take her own life by downing painkillers and vodka before her trial for conspiring to supply drugs collapsed last week. ‘I’ve openly admitted to smoking weed,’ she told Good Morning Britain. ‘There are a lot of people in this industry that have dabbled in cocaine and I am one of the very few that haven’t and don’t.’ The N-Dubz singer, 26, said she is a target because ‘it feels a bit of a class thing’. She explained: ‘There are certain people of

a different class that can get off very lightly in certain situations and it gets laughed off. With me everything gets made to feel a lot worse.’ Tulisa said this was partly ‘because of the class thing’ and because she is sometimes shown as ‘a bit of a rebel of the industry.’ Her suicide bid came at a ‘very dark’ moment as she feared life behind bars. ‘Prison was very scary at first but then I had to come to terms with it because I thought it was a possibility,’ she added. ‘I came to terms with it – I accepted it. The biggest fear for me was losing my livelihood.’

OR the past six years, the US military has been developing a bullet that can change direction after it has been fired. And now, more than €17million later, they have the proof that it works. Earlier this month, the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (Darpa), an agency tasked with coming up with the weapons of the future for the US government, released video footage of its magic bullet in action. The grainy clip shows a live-fire test of a 50-calibre bullet at a target, even though the rifle is aimed at a different point. A line of flight shows how the bullet changes course to make its way to the target. The footage might resemble a shooting game on the ZX Spectrum, but it could revolutionise warfare. The basic nature of the video is an indication of just how tightlipped Darpa is about its technology. It wouldn’t reveal exactly how the bullet was guided but the test was part of the agency’s Exacto (Extreme Accuracy Tasked Ordnance) project. ‘This video shows Exacto rounds manoeuvring in flight to hit targets that are offset from where the sniper rifle is aimed,’ said Darpa. ‘Exacto’s ammunition and optical guidance system help track and direct projectiles to their targets by compensating for weather, wind, target movement and other factors that could impede successful hits.

Bullet that changes course to hit target The US government has released footage of a test showing how a new bullet’s trajectory can be altered after it has been fired from a gun. But does this technology have the capacity to change modern warfare? ROSS McGUINNESS reports

For military snipers, hitting moving targets in conditions such as high winds and the dusty terrain commonly found in Afghanistan is extremely challenging. ‘It is critical that snipers be able to engage targets faster, and with better accuracy. Any shot that doesn’t hit a target risks the safety of troops by indicating their presence and potentially exposing their location.’ The theory behind the technology is simple: a guidance system is used to send signals to the bullet while it is in flight, altering its course. Apart from that, little is known about exactly how Exacto works.

An artist’s impression of the Exacto bullet released by Darpa shows no signs of fins or any other steering mechanism on its exterior, meaning any changes in trajectory seem to be influenced by what’s on the inside. ‘From the artist’s impression of the Darpa bullet, the course correction ability is either related to the rings shown or there could be a mass inside the bullet that can change position, thus causing the spinning bullet to change course,’ said Dr James Shackel, a lecturer in forensic

brain region’s Days of Dolly’s pessimism link 9-to-5 at an end? Company Secretary

Look of love is in your eyes... FIRST impressions count – but be quick. Deciding someone’s character can be based on glances that take a tenth of a second, a study suggests. Eyes indicate attractiveness, while approachability is linked to mouth shape. Masculinity is linked to structural features of the face or tanned skin. ‘These traits can be “read” from a glimpse as brief as 100 milliseconds or less,’ said Dr Tom Hartley, part of a York University study that analysed the features of 1,000 faces and asked volunteers to judge them.

IF YOUR glass is always half empty, it could be because of a tiny brain region that teaches us to expect the worst. Scientists believe the habenula, half the size of a pea, plays an important role in learning from bad experiences. An over-active habenula may be linked to depression, pessimism and a negative outlook. A University College London team scanned the brains of 23 healthy women who were shown a random set of pictures, some of which signalled a painful electric shock delivered to the left hand. The functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) scans showed that shock-associated pictures activated the habenula. The findings, published in Proceedings Of The National Academy Of Sciences, may lead to new treatments for depression.

WORKING in an office is becoming increasingly unpopular, with a growing trend away from the traditional nine-to-five day, according to a new report. A survey of 10,000 adults in five countries found that only 14 per cent wanted to work in an office in the future. One in five of those surveyed by professional services firm PricewaterhouseCoopers (PwC) said they would prefer to work in a ‘virtual’ environment, working from any location. The report said the lack of interest in working in an office showed a growing desire for people to have more flexibility in their careers. Jon Andrews, of PwC, said: ‘Advances in technology mean workers no longer have to be shackled to their desks.’

bbC let Clarkson use racist remark PRESENTER Jeremy Clarkson used a racist term on Top Gear which the BBC failed to edit out, UK watchdog Ofcom ruled yesterday. Just three months after a tape was discovered of him using the n-word, the Yorkshireman (pictured) was found to have spouted an offensive quip by referring to an Asian man as a ‘slope’. During the clip, the programme’s presenters were seen watching a Burmese man crossing a makeshift bridge over the River Kwai when Clarkson declared: ‘That is a proud moment – but there is a slope on it.’ The regulator found the BBC had, in allowing the scripted joke to air, ‘failed to take the opportunity, during filming or post-production, to check whether the word had the potential to offend viewers’.

That sounds terrifying... It really is. What are you wearing? Er, honestly? I’m wearing gym kit. You totally could have

So you play a wide array of characters in Luxury Comedy. Which is your favourite? I

you get a bit well known, you feel like you’re getting the keys to the city. You get invited to a million parties and meet all these fascinating people. Julian [Barratt – The Mighty Boosh co-writer] hates all that stuff while I sort of embrace it. But then it’s a bit like there’s a party, and then there’s another room in the party where the cool people go, and then there’s another room where the cool, cool people go, and then eventually it’s just you, on your own, in a cubicle.

People have been wondering whether Julian will be in Luxury Comedy Series 2. Will he? I did offer him a part but

unfortunately he was just too busy. We’d still love to do a Mighty Boosh film together. We’ve written one half of a film, sort of like The Rocky Horror Picture Show, and then we wrote another half, which was an adventure set in the Arctic.

you’re getting the keys to the city

one was a bit sketchy and weird, a sort of frantic, psychedelic panic attack. With charm. But with this one we’ve tried to make it lighter, with more of a story. We’ve tried to get all the aspects we liked with the first season but make it a bit more palatable.

I find it hard to picture you sitting down at a desk. Do you sit down at 9am with a pen or head to Starbucks with a MacBook? Nah, the guy

who does the animation and I have an office and we do it together. I pace the room and talk a lot while he writes stuff down. We spend a long time on the concepts.

Why did you choose to set it in a coffee shop? Well, we start the show by laughing about how it might look like it’s going to be a boring sitcom. But I think the mundane setting helps contrast with the magical stuff that’s going on, all the animation and fantastical storylines, etc. And the café is at the foot of a Hawaiian volcano after all.

You’ve been controversial on Twitter in the past. Are you giving it a miss these days?

I’m quite wary now. You do anything and it’s a story immediately. That business with Waldemar Januszczak [Fielding was accused of telling fans to troll the Sunday Times art critic after he suggested Fielding wasn’t qualified to interview Damien Hirst] wasn’t a spat at all really. We bumped into each other recently and laughed about it.

What do you do in your own free time? I’m pretty good at

eoPle Watcher, firstly, maybe you just don’t bother to read the paper or watch the news at any time other than when Israel is being criticised, but if you had you would have seen a glut of stories about the treatment of civilians by the regimes in Syria, libya and egypt. There’s also been a lot of coverage about Isis and Boko Haram, who get regular mentions in most media and are often taken as representing all of Islam (do you recall the huge and justified uproar over the 200 kidnapped girls – which world leader didn’t get in on that one?). Maybe you’re just not offended when the lines blur between criticising terrorists/militants and the rest of the peaceful Muslim world.

Secondly – please don’t try the accusation and guilt card. The massive public response has nothing to do with Judaism and antiSemitism. It has everything to do with a state with a massive, US-funded weapons arsenal attacking civilians indiscriminately to get to militants who have a vastly inferior firepower. lastly – when libya and Syria attacked civilians the West openly declared support for and armed the rebels. Yet in the case of Israel, the West arms the State so it can terrorise civilians. But I’m

Making jam? There’s sweet nothing to it J

am is, to my thinking, the most lovely of all preserves. The simplest, purest jams are ones in which the flavour and perfume of the fruit is captured, literally preserved, to eat another day. a spoonful of raspberry jam on a winter’s afternoon brings back the glow of summer gardens, a lava flow of rich, golden apricot jam atop a steamed sponge pudding adds sunshine to the darkest December meal, and a puddle of blackcurrant jam in a bowl of steaming porridge puts a smile on anyone’s face. There are rules when it comes to jammaking, as there are whenever sugar is used in cooking, but once you understand these rules you can experiment with flavours and spices, creating your favourite preserves to serve in triumph at your own table.

Rule 1 Use only perfect fruit. Why would you want the final taste to be of slightly mouldy berries? For a chutney, jelly or even fruit cheese, you can cut away the bad parts but for jam, you must use the best-quality fruit you can find.

Jam making is cool. Kate Moss does it. So does the Duchess of Cambridge. And it’s easy, says food writer Thane Prince

Rule 2 avoid at all cost fruit labelled ‘For Jam’, as this is often over-ripe. Rule 3 Choose berries with a rich colour and perfume but very slightly under-ripe. Firm, fragrant plums, apricots that only just give when gently squeezed and figs that have not split at the base are perfect. Rule 4 For a set jam, the quantity of sugar is dictated by the quantity of fruit on an equal basis. Low-sugar jams are looser and must be stored in the fridge. Rule 5 I favour white granulated sugar simply because it is the least expensive. I’ve yet to find an issue with it. Rule 6 Weigh your ingredients carefully. as a general rule, I use equal quantities of prepared fruit and sugar, adding acid and pectin as necessary. Rule 7 You will need a large, heavy-

bottomed pan, preferably wider than it is tall. a good surface area allows for rapid evaporation of water when boiling. Rule 8 Jars and lids must be spotlessly clean and not chipped or damaged. Rule 9 Sterilise your jars and lids by putting them on a baking tray in an oven preheated to 100C and heating them gently for 15-20min. The jar should be hot when you pot your jam. Rule 10 If the sugar is not fully dissolved before you boil the jam, the result may be crunchy. Edible but not a prizewinner.

Plum jam Plum jam is the simplest jam to make. Plums are high in both pectin and acid, and are readily available in late summer and into autumn. A note here: not all members of the plum family are the same, so greengages and apricots will need special treatment when making jam.

IngREDIEnTs Yield 1.2kg. Keeps 9-12 months 1kg red plums ♦ 250ml water ♦ 900g white granulated sugar

Measuring jug and scales ♦ Some glass jars with lids, washed and dried ♦ Baking tray ♦ 2-3 small china or glass plates or saucers ♦ Colander ♦ 1 clean tea-towel ♦ Chopping board and sharp knife ♦ Large heavybottomed, non-reactive preserving pan with a lid ♦ Wooden spoon ♦ Timer ♦ Bowl of hot water and a slotted spoon ♦ Jam funnel if available, or ladle ♦ Labels step 1 Place some clean jam jars and their lids on a baking tray in the oven, preheated to 100C, for 20min. Put three small plates or saucers in the freezer to chill. step 2 Wash the plums well in a colander and leave to drain on a clean, ironed tea-towel. step 3 Cut the plums into halves or

quarters, depending on size. Remove stones and discard. Place the fruit in a preserving pan and add the water. step 4 Place the pan over a moderate heat and cover with the lid. Bring to a simmer and, stirring from time to time, cook until softened, about 10min. step 5 Turn the heat down to very low, remove the lid from the pan and add the sugar. Using a wooden spoon, stir the mixture until the sugar has completely

dissolved. Make sure you cannot see any undissolved crystals of sugar on the sides of the pan and the back of the spoon. The jam should not feel gritty when stirred. step 6 Turn up the heat and bring the mixture to the boil. Cook the jam at a full rolling boil, one that can’t be stirred down with the spoon, for 5min, stirring often to stop it catching on the bottom of the pan. step 7 Turn off the heat and make your first test for a set. Take one of the cold plates and drop a spoonful of jam on to it. Leave for about 1min then push the side of the mixture gently with the tip of your finger and look at the surface. If it wrinkles, the jam is ready to pot. step 8 If the jam is still runny, turn the heat back on and boil for a further 2min before testing again. Always turn off the heat while testing for a set. Repeat if necessary. Once the jam has reached setting point, turn off the heat. Skim off any scum using a slotted spoon, rinsing it in hot water between skims. step 9 Leave to cool for 5min. Take the baking tray of jars from the oven at the same time, then pot the jam into the hot jars. I use a jam funnel to help with this, but a ladle is fine. Top with the lids. step 10 When the jars are cold, label them, and check the lids are firmly screwed on. Store in a cool, dark place.

Raspberry jam I feel it would be a tragedy for anyone not to make at least one jar of this simple and delicious raspberry jam. It is on my Desert Island Discs list of essentials and is the jam I make most often. It is best made in small quantities and eaten as fresh as possible. Use ripe, red raspberries, choosing one of the larger varieties if possible. If you are picking your own, try for a dry, sunny day. Thawed, frozen raspberries work perfectly well.

Chill three small plates in the freezer. step 2 Place the berries and sugar into a heavybottomed steel or enamelled pan and cook over a low heat until the fruit melts and the sugar is fully dissolved. Don’t worry that the berries break up. step 3 Turn up the heat and bring the mixture to the boil. Cook the jam at a full rolling boil that can’t be stirred down with the spoon for 5min.

Blueberries contain almost no pectin so I add apple when using them to make jam. Fruit butters don’t rely on a set in the way jams do, so this is perfect for big batches of unsorted berries. I don’t sieve this butter but you can if you want a smooth preserve.

IngREDIEnTs Yield 900g. Keeps for 4 months

1kg blueberries ♦ Juice of 2 limes ♦ 400g white granulated sugar ♦ ½tsp finely ground coriander seeds step 1 Wash the blueberries under cold running water then discard any squashed or mouldy ones. step 2 Without drying the berries, tip them into a large, heavy-bottomed pan, and cover with a lid and cook over a low heat, shaking from time to time, until the berries pop and soften – about 10min. step 3 Scrape the berries into a liquidiser and whizz until very smooth.

Return to the pan. Alternatively, use a stick blender, directly in the pan. step 4 Stir in the lime juice, sugar and ground coriander and cook over a low heat. Stir constantly with a wooden spoon until the sugar has completely dissolved. Continue to cook, stirring from time to time, until the mixture is very thick. This will take 45min-1hr. I find the best tool is a flat-ended wooden spatula. step 5 Place some clean jam jars and their lids on a baking tray and then into the oven preheated to 100C for 20min. step 7 To check whether the butter is ready, lift up a spoonful. If the butter runs over the side when held level, cook a little longer. If it forms a mound, it is ready. Take the jars from the oven. step 8 Pot into the hot jars. I use a jam funnel, but a ladle is fine. Top with lids. When the jars are cold, label them, and check the lids are firmly screwed on. Store in a cool, dark place.

Stewart Lee chats backstage to the cynical pseudo-intellectuals who make up the guest list, with Kevin Eldon revealing how he came to terms with his stand-up demons.

Director James Gunn is currently winning plaudits for Guardians Of The Galaxy – here’s an earlier effort, a black comedy in which Frank D’Arbo (Rainn Wilson, above) has had enough of being pushed around by drug dealer Kevin Bacon and decides to become costumed crime-fighter The Crimson Bolt. Ellen Page helps him out as his unhinged sidekick. There are excellent set pieces and dark humour while D’Arbo’s mental instability is portrayed movingly.

With the sequel still doing decent box-office business here’s a chance to take a trip down memory lane with the original action comedy. Based on an 1980s teen TV show (which starred a young Johnny Depp), the set-up sees duo Channing Tatum and Jonah Hill go undercover as high school students to bust up a drugs operation.

Russell Crowe (right) plays Noah – yep, that one with the ark from the Bible – in this demented epic from Darren Aronofsky, which is quite a departure from his previous work such as Black Swan. Noah must save humanity from Armageddon – and from Ray Winstone, of all people, who is out to thwart his plans.

Director Mark Hartley revists the ‘golden age’ of Australian exploitation horror with this remake of 1978’s Patrick. Sharni Vinson, who was great in You’re Next, again proves adept at the genre as the nurse manipulated by comatose patient Patrick’s sinister psychic powers. Charles Dance also appears.

INSTANT EXPERT Apple’s wATch Details of Apple’s smartwatch have been subject to the same degree of speculation as Jay Z and Beyoncé’s marriage of late but, finally, we have some facts with a patent (inset) being approved. Codenamed iTime, here’s what we think we know so far. ■ It seems to have two parts: an electronic wristband and detachable mobile device. The thinking is it will have one set of functions when combined and another separated. ■ According to patent notes, iTime is described as a ‘central electronic device’ that’s ‘removably secured’ to the wrist strap. This sounds a bit like the sixth-gen ipod Nano that doubled as a wristwatch. ■ It has an accelerometer, Gps receiver, wi-fi connectivity, an antenna and a haptic device for vibration alerts. Oh, and a battery.

REVIEW

With new kid on the block Windows Phone OS still seen as the poor relation when it comes to first choice phones, we asked Android-aficionado David Guerin to check out the Windows 8.1 Phone Nokia Lumia 635 – with surprising results. The Nokia Lumia 635 is a solid piece of kit, running the latest Windows 8.1 Phone OS from Microsoft. As I switched from my once top-of-therange Samsung S3 running Android 4.3 to a phone priced at just over €150, there’s been very little that I have missed, and in fact have become very fond of the Nokia. A budget phone, the price leads to a few compromises on hardware – there’s just a 5MP rearfacing camera (sorry, selfie lovers), a lower end processor, Snapdragon 400 1.2Ghz and just 512 MBs of memory. You’d hardly notice this compromise as you attempt three star success in Angry Birds on your daily commute. Windows 8.1 Phone has come a long way from its predecessor. Action Centre or the Notification Bar makes it a move to familiar ground for both An-

■ Most of the tech appears to be housed in the strap rather than the detachable touchscreen device. ■ It is designed to be used with smartphones and computers – in other words, other expensive things Apple wants you to buy. ■ It can be used as a remote control when paired with a phone for dealing with notifications, calls and messages. ■ Gesture control means you can control it by shaking, bouncing, tapping or throwing it at the wall. ■ It’s worth noting Apple applied for this patent back in 2011 so the likelihood is chief executive Tim cook and co have taken some time out from swimming in their scrooge McDuck money pit to make some improvements since that date. JD droid and iOS users alike. Customisation in the look and feel, if you choose to spend the time, really brings the phone into its own, with active tiles for live updates from Twitter and Facebook for example, even without the need to open the app. The single tiled screen is ideal for the busy user, allowing them to see all app activity in one fell ‘swipe’. Then there are the bright bold case covers which are a welcome change. Coming from the Android world myself, this was an easy switch from the Google world, given the easy set-up process for my mail accounts, contacts and calendars. For business users, the integration into Office 365 and OneDrive is very impressive, though the minimal feature set and 4.5in screen does not make editing documents easy, though reading is ideal. The major issue is not the phone itself but the apps in the Microsoft Store. The majority of popular apps are there but it’s as if they have been forgotten about, missing the newer features of their iOS and Android alternatives. Overall, a solid enjoyable performance at an affordable price. Available on Vodafone only, from free (billpay) and €149.99 (pre-pay).

The big release Forza Motorsport 5: Racing Game Of The Year (Xbox One) (3+) Forza 5 was a launch title for the Xbox One way back in November last year and received some damn fine praise. Some of that seems to have gone to the developers’ heads given the addition of what must be one of the most arrogant titles ever conceived but ‘Racing Game Of The Year’ is a special edition that gives Forza 5 a second coming. With some breathtaking visuals and a scary attention to detail in terms of how the cars looked and drove, the original didn’t really have anything wrong with it. Plus – nerd alert – it remains a rare example of

just how beautiful next-gen console games look when running in full 1080p high definition and at 60 frames per second. All of that content remains here but there are also three new tracks, taking the total up to 18. There’s also a Top Gear Car Park containing ten new vehicles, including a 1980 Renault 5 Turbo (Duran Duran’s greatest hits not included). The Xbox One suffered from a shaky start but sales have started to pick up thanks to a recent price cut and a version without its love-it-orhate-it Kinect motion sensor. So for

17

new adopters who have been wary about dipping into the launch titles list, Forza 5 is suddenly attractive. It’s also a carrot-dangler for forthcoming spin-off Forza Horizon 2, due out at the end of September. Rather than track racing, Horizon revolves around a fictional street racing festival where you must complete special tasks to progress. What makes this sequel special is that it’s set in southern France and northern Italy – home to some of the world’s greatest roads – and includes a soundtrack curated by DJ Rob Da Bank. JD

Here’s a way to earn your crustacean…

‘N

o, no: gently or you’ll destroy it!’ barks the chef as I attack a perfectly good sea bass with all the knife skills of a blind man in oven gloves. Correctly identifying me as a serious threat – to both dinner and myself – he ushers me towards a basket of spider crabs and hands me a hammer instead. ‘All you have to do is break the shells,’ he tells me in immaculate English, lightly seasoned with Italian and a pinch of exasperation. Venetian cicchetti (‘small plates’) have been rising up our Italian menus faster than flood water in St Mark’s Square. With the delicious little dishes

The big day arrives

Jonathan Thompson takes a masterclass in Venetian cooking beside the prettiest canals in the world – effectively Venetian tapas – very much of the moment, and my cookery skills in dire need of a good filleting, I’d decided to kill two birds with one carefully extracted avocado stone and head to Venice for a cicchetti lesson. Previously, my attempts at cooking had been less Come Dine With Me, more Come Die With Me, so I was going to the very top for my Italian renaissance: The Epicurean School at Venice’s iconic Gritti Palace. The property – one of Venice’s oldest and grandest hotels – reopened last year after a major €45million refurbishment and is a short, winding walk away from St Mark’s Square on the banks of the city’s Grand Canal. once a home for the likes of Clark Gable, Greta Garbo and Ernest Hemingway, the 15 months of building work have restored the place to its former splendour – including the famous Epicurean School, which has been teaching guests to cook Venetian-style for nearly 40 years. You can even learn how to make Hemingway’s patented hangover cure, white wine and scampi risotto, his regular order here.

Assigned to a class of five English hopefuls, our day’s tuition begins early on a Saturday morning amid the fresh, sharp smells of Venice’s ancient Rialto markets. Here, the Gritti’s executive chef, Daniele Turco, leads us through the bustling stalls, showing us how to spot the freshest fish and the ripest vegetables. Seasonality is the key to good cicchetti, he says, and we return laden with cuttlefish, squid, samphire, spider crabs and an odd-looking vegetable called ‘barba di

frate’. Back at the Gritti, the real work begins. We’re issued natty aprons embroidered with red crabs. Soon the real thing is splattered all over mine, as I set about the boiled spider crabs with Daniele’s kitchen hammer. There’s a thin line between hitting them hard enough to crack the shell and absolutely obliterating them, as I soon discover. Venice is essentially a cluster of

tiny islands, so it’s no surprise that seafood is at the heart of its cuisine. Over the course of the day, we learn to prepare everything from mussels to soft shell crabs, as well as how to crush garlic correctly (under the heel of your hand) and how not to fillet sea bass (like a drunken lumberjack who’s late for a date). The kitchen is only 10ft from the canal and every few minutes, gondoliers float past like serene spectres. When the aprons finally come off and

dinner is served, I’m exhausted. The experience has been a bonding one too, and after dinner we enjoy drinks on the Gritti’s terrace. Facing the pretty church of Santa Maria della Salute across the water, we watch the comings and goings on the world’s most famous canal as the sun starts to sink. Novelist W Somerset Maugham wrote in 1960 that ‘there are few things in life more pleasant than to sit on the terrace of the Gritti when the sun about to set bathes in lovely colour the Salute’. He’s right (but I bet he didn’t have to cook his own dinner first).

A collector’s dream

Just two hours’ drive from Manhattan, the Catskills is a land of virgin forests, snow-capped mountains, waterfalls and rolling farmland. It gained mass appeal in the 1950s and was nicknamed the Borscht Belt after the many Jewish families who escaped there from the sweltering New York summers. A SPANISH court will push ahead with prosecuting Barcelona forward Lionel Messi for alleged tax evasion despite a public prosecutor calling for the charges to be dismissed. The prosecutor argued in June that Messi’s father Jorge was responsible for the family’s finances and not the four-time world player of the year. However, the court in Barcelona has decided that his son could have known about and approved the creation of a web of shell companies that were allegedly used to evade taxes due on income from image rights. Messi and his father were accused last year of defrauding the Spanish state of more than €4million by filing false returns between 2006 to 2009. They have denied wrongdoing.

by gAvin bROwn Harry redknapp has rubbished suggestions medical concerns were behind the collapse of Loic remy’s move to Liverpool and claimed the anfield club’s loss is Qpr’s gain. France international remy looked certain to join Liverpool after the two clubs agreed a fee of £8.5million, with the striker even joining the reds’ squad on their american tour. However, the deal broke down on Sunday night, with reports claiming Liverpool had raised concerns about the player’s health. remy’s medical when he joined Marseille in 2010 uncovered a heart defect but the move still went through and redknapp expressed surprise that any issue may have arisen again. ‘I don’t really see how he could have failed a medical,’ said the Qpr boss. ‘He’s never had a problem with his fitness – you couldn’t meet a fitter lad. They must have changed their mind or decided to move in another direction. ‘Liverpool’s loss is our gain. I’m disappointed for the boy that his move didn’t happen but from a selfish point of view, I’ve got a great striker back here now.’ reds boss Brendan rodgers said: ‘It’s very simple, we have decided not to go ahead with the deal, there’s nothing more to be said.’

« Transfer Talk – pages 22-23 Mcginley withdraws from uspgA European Ryder Cup captain Paul McGinley has withdrawn from the USPGA Championship due to a shoulder injury. The 47-year-old missed the Alstom Open de France at the beginning of July as a bout of bursitis affected the mobility in his left shoulder and the condition has ruled him out of next week’s major tournament at Valhalla Golf Club. The Irishman undertook a scan during the Scottish Open and a period of rest has now been prescribed. McGinley said: ‘The scan showed that I really needed to rest my shoulder for a couple of months if I am to address the injury properly and so, because of that, I have regrettably had to withdraw

Injured: McGinley’s shoulder problems mean he won’t be able to compete at Valhalla from the USPGA Championship. ‘It’s a pity because I would have loved to have teed up at Valhalla but I assessed the situation over the past couple of weeks during my family holiday and I think this is the sensible decision. ‘It’s not just during the week
