He ain’t heavy...

...he’s my disabled brother, says hero triathlete, aged just eight

Final push: Noah charges for the line with Lucas in a buggy, after pulling his brother behind his bike and through the water in a rubber dinghy PIctures: caters THE road was long, with many a winding turn. But Noah Aldrich knew he was strong enough to carry his disabled brother Lucas through a gruelling triathlon. He pulled the six-year-old along in a rubber dinghy as he completed a 200-metre swim – before pedalling 4.8km with his sibling riding in a trailer behind him. Then it was time for the last leg, a 1.6km run pushing Lucas in a buggy. Parents Brian and Alissa cheered as their children crossed the finish line. ‘It was a little nerve-racking but exciting and exhilarating at the same time,’ Mrs Aldrich said. ‘We’re definitely proud.

by DOMinic yEATMAn As a parent it was a pretty incredible thing to watch.’ Eight-year-old Noah is probably a little young to be a fan of The Hollies. But his sporting exploits certainly kept alive the spirit of the Manchester group’s 1969 hit (He Ain’t Heavy) He’s My Brother. The American schoolboy trained for three months to ensure he was up to the task of completing the YMCA triathlon in Boise, Indiana, with Lucas in tow. They completed the course in 54 minutes. Lucas has rare brain condition lissencephaly and cannot walk, eat by himself

Smiles: The brothers with their parents or talk. But Mrs Aldrich said: ‘After the race he definitely knew he had been part of something special.’

Tap and go: Rugby stars’ pub on the way

Teaser tweet: Rob Kearney tweeted out this picture

THE bid by four Irish international rugby players to buy a landmark Ballsbridge pub is apparently going ahead. Ireland players Rob and Dave Kearney, Sean O’Brien and Jamie Heaslip’s offer of €1.35million for the popular Bellamy’s pub was accepted last February. It was reported in April that the sale had been challenged by another bidder – but work now looks to be under way on the premises, according to Rob Kearney’s

Twitter account, where he posted a teaser to fans. Tweeting a picture of the Bellamy’s exterior, Rob said: ‘Work is under way in Ballsbridge, exciting times ahead! Can you guess the name of our new pub?’ Jamie Heaslip chimed in with an Instagram picture looking out a window of Bellamy’s, saying: ‘This will be a hell of a view, wanna try and guess the name?’ Rob Kearney’s agent was unavailable for comment.

Bailed man beat partner Man dies in tricolour grab

A MAN will serve an extra 32 months in prison for viciously beating his girlfriend while on bail for a previous attack on her. Terence Russell, 41, of Rafters Road, Drimnagh, punched Elizabeth Gaffney in a lengthy assault. He also bit her on the nose and stabbed her with a corkscrew. He is currently serving a three-year sentence for another attack on Ms Gaffney and a concurrent three-year term for assaulting two gardaí who came to arrest him for the attack. Judge Martin Nolan imposed the new sentence to begin Corkscrew: Used when Russell finishes his current term in December. in the attack

A DROWNING tragedy in a lake at the centre of a flags dispute in Northern Ireland highlights the need to finally deal with the issues at Stormont, SDLP Assembly member Dominic Bradley has said. The man, Oswald Bradley, 68 and unrelated, died while swimming in Bessbrook Pond in Co Armagh on Monday evening while trying to remove two tricolours hung from

trees on a small island. The erection of the flags in the village earlier this month caused tensions and parties including Sinn Féin called for their removal. Politicians are still at loggerheads on the issues of flags and parades. Separately, on Monday night, houses and cars were damaged and racist slogans against Romanians were painted on a wall in east Belfast.

Attack horror of US tourists on first day in city centre by jESSicA MAgEE

THREE Dublin men have been sentenced for a vicious attack on two US tourists who had tried to stop a robbery. US stockbroker Garth Russell suffered permanent facial scarring in the attack and still has glass embedded under his eye. His brother Patrick’s arm was broken in the attack. Judge Patrick McCartan sentenced Ian Dent, 21, of Stanaway Road, Crumlin, to five years for two counts

Cycling on path led to assault

A CYCLIST swung out with a key and a small screwdriver to injure a Spanish tourist in a row over cycling on the footpath. Karl Manning, 41, of North Great Charles Street pleaded guilty at Dublin Circuit Criminal Court to assault causing harm to Gerard Parareda at Middle Abbey Street last August. Before the attack, Manning, cycling by, had brushed Mr Parareda’s companion, who gave out to him. Manning received the Probation Act.

of violent disorder at Merchant’s Arch and on the quays on April 29, 2012. Aidan Finnegan, 28, of Reuben Street,

Rialto, was sentenced to four years for violent disorder. Richard Fish, 24, of St Anthony’s Road, Rialto, pleaded

guilty to two counts of violent disorder and was sentenced to three years. Dublin Circuit Criminal Court heard the brothers were walking in Temple Bar when they stumbled on an apparent mugging at Merchant’s Arch. When Garth Russell intervened and threatened to call gardaí, the gang chased after the Americans, who had arrived in Dublin that day, and Mr Russell was struck in the face and head with a broken bottle. The attack had left both men with ‘horrific injuries’, the judge said.

Aoibheann’s Pink Tie: 500km in one day

Up to €745 a year for ‘free education’ ‘FREE’ education is costing parents between €345 and €745 per year per child, a Barnados survey has found. The annual report found that when clothing, footwear, school books, classroom resources and a voluntary contribution are taken into account, it costs €345 to send a senior infants pupil to school and €735 for a first-year student. This is €5 less than 2013 figures for primary and €50 for second level. Saying that every child has the same right to an education, Barnardos CEO Fergus Finlay called on the Government to ‘show real leadership’ on costs and ‘not put the burden on schools alone.’ He added: ‘A poor child has the right to the same education as a child from a wealthy family.’

Solicitor walks free Meat cleaver man Fraudster gets year after 4yrs custody charges dismissed for €250k land deal A FORMER Dublin solicitor who spent four years in custody in Australia fighting extradition on cheque fraud charges has ended up being given a non-custodial sentence. Vincent O’Donoghue, 62, of Whitworth Road, Drumcondra, pleaded guilty at Dublin Circuit Criminal Court to fraudulently converting cheques totalling IR£34,828 (€44,231) to be used as deposits on properties in Dublin and Belfast on dates in 1992, 1998 and 1999. The court heard O’Donoghue was arrested in May 2000 but went to Australia in July 2002 and was in custody there from 2009 to 2013. Judge Mary Ellen Ring ordered O’Donoghue to carry out 240 hours of community service in lieu of a two-year sentence.

Finlay: A poor child has the same right

A MAN was told by a judge yesterday he was ‘lucky’ as he was cleared of brandishing a meat cleaver on a Dublin bus. Robert Fogarty, 44, from Cardy Rock Court, Balbriggan, had been charged with possessing the meat cleaver as a weapon and being intoxicated in public at Atrium Road, near Dublin Airport, on the night of January 27 last, but walked out of court yesterday a free man. His lawyer argued that upon his arrest Dublin Airport Police had cited an incorrect section of the Air Transport Navigation Act in order to search his bag, where the cleaver was found, and that the charges must therefore be dismissed.

A MAN who led four separate lives is in prison after admitting a massive fraud. Conor Brannigan, 41, from Stafford Hall, Silver Street, Nenagh, Co Tipperary was married with three children, was engaged separately to two other partners and had a girlfriend in Poland with another child. He pleaded guilty to three charges of defrauding his potential brother-in-law, vet James Hoare of Rooskey, Co Roscommon, of €250,000 in a land deal on dates in 2010 and 2011. Mr Hoare engaged him to buy a plot of land in Co Roscommon, but when the deal fell through there was no money left to repay Mr Hoare. Judge Tony Hunt sentenced Brannigan to two years, but suspended the last 12 months.

Disfigured recluse who hid from stares is transformed by pioneering transplant by DOMINIC YEATMAN IT TOOK more than a bit of airbrushing to get Richard Norris on the front of a magazine – after he blew his face off with a shotgun. The former firefighter had the jaws, teeth, tongue and skin of a 21-yearold road crash victim grafted on by 150 medics in a 36-hour operation. His transformation after years as a self-conscious recluse saw him chosen to join the likes of Matt Damon and Jay Z as a GQ cover star. ‘When I was disfigured I was surprised that more people didn’t walk into telephone poles or break their necks to stare at me,’ he said. ‘Now there’s no one paying attention. Unless they know me personally, they don’t know I am a face transplant patient.’ Mr Norris, 39, shot himself by accident after a drunken argument with his mother in 1997. Doctors tried their best to patch him up but after losing both jaws, all his teeth and his nose, his once handsome face was unrecognisable. He contemplated suicide and rarely left his home in Virginia, US, except to go shopping after dark. In 2012 he accepted the chance to have the operation known as the Mount Everest of surgery – even after being warned there was only a 50:50 chance of survival. Data show E-car chargers every 60km Dáil is still a sausagefest THE latest Central Statistics Office figures on gender equlity are out, including the fact that just 15.7 per cent of Dáil members are women. The Women and Men in Ireland figures for 2013 also showed 65.7 per cent of men were in employment, against just 55.9 per cent of women. More women gained a third-level qualification (55.3 per cent of graduates were women), while men work longer hours. Men worked an average of 39.2 hours in paid employment, while women worked 31.2. A large disparity emerged in marriage, with 44.1 per cent of husbands working 40 hours or more, compared to just 16.8 per cent of wives. Women were ‘significantly under-represented in decision-making structures’ on a national and regional level, the CSO found, with females making up less than a fifth of local authorities and just over a third of VECs. The average age for a woman having her first child was 29.8 in 2011. Ireland and France had the joint highest fertility rate in Europe in 2012.

ALL major Irish towns and cities now have electric car charge points following the completion of a European Commission pilot project. Under the project, the first of its kind in Europe, the ESB was charged (sorry…) with implementing IT and communications platforms to ‘allow electric vehicle drivers seamlessly travel across both jurisdictions of Ireland and

Northern Ireland, a first in Europe’. There are now 1,200 public electric car charge points, including 46 fast charge points, located every 60km along Ireland’s main roads. ESB said it hopes the availability of fast charge points, which give an 80 per cent charge in 30minutes, will encourage more drivers to go electric, which it said will save an average driver €2,300 a year.

Nova in €47k royalties row RADIO Nova has been billed for almost €47,000 for alleged nonpayment of music royalties, a court was told yesterday. The radio station, which broadcasts from Castleforbes House in Dublin, was sued by the Irish Music Rights Organisation (Imro). Yesterday, Simon Peare of

Imro told Judge Jacqueline Linnane that he had conducted a check of songs and music being played by Radio Nova on a specific date. Judge Linnane adjourned IMRO’s application until November 4 and directed the radio station to file an affidavit by October 14.

We’re ugly, but we’re charmers, say Irish men WE may be ugly, but we’re charming, say Irish men, and 20 per cent of the divils would use that charm to seduce another man’s girlfriend, according to a new survey. Some 56 per cent of men told Cadbury Starbar’s #NoNutsNoGlory campaign that while they think they’re among the ugliest fellas in the world, they’re still effective flirters. Almost one in five (19 per cent) would definitely seduce someone’s girlfriend if they found her attractive. Some 59 per cent of males said their sense of humour was their weapon of choice, one-fifth (22 per cent) would call upon their stellar grey matter, with just eight per cent relying on their ‘hot bod’ to get the girl. But what if their amazing physiques and witty repertoire failed to win hearts? Well, half of the lads said they would simply lie. That makes sense as only four per cent of the 18 to 30-year-olds said their bank balance was a draw for women. Of course, most (77 per cent) Irish blokes have made an eejit out of themselves to impress a woman, while a third have done it more times than they’d like to admit. The men rated model Georgia Salpa as Ireland’s hottest woman, ahead of their girlfriends, with more than one-quarter (27 per cent) willing to dump their other half for a chance to date the pin-up. Some 46 per cent say they could pull Georgia,

‘Our rotten, filthy minds; addled by booze, Ronseal and bare knuckle boxing, are ostensibly malleable by simplistic marketing and a “hot bod”’ Luke Holohan defends the Irish male Gometro.ie/eejits while 21 per cent think they stand a chance with Roz Purcell. However, only seven per cent believe they could impress stunning Karena Graham. But now they are in with a chance to do just that. Cadbury Starbar is giving these charming men the chance to hang out with Salpa, Purcell and Graham in Dublin, London and Abu Dhabi by uploading their best photobomb to nonutsnoglory.ie. A separate study found 75 per cent of Irish socialisers still prefer an oldfashioned chat-up line over social media hook-ups. Apple ‘slows down old iPhones’ to boost sales APPLE is deliberately slowing down its customers’ iPhones to force them to buy the latest models, it is alleged. A study by Harvard University shows online complaints rise every time a new version is released. Researchers discovered that Google searches for phrases such as ‘iPhone slow’ spike whenever a more expensive type of the device

goes on sale. In contrast, they found there were no such patterns for rival products such as the Samsung Galaxy. Professor Sendhil Mullainathan said: The results are, to say the least, striking’. However, he warned that the perception of a phone ‘slowing down’ may be purely psychological. Apple declined to comment.

Three-storey house rolled to a new site by AiDAn RADnEDgE MOVING home is always a big operation – but this takes that to extremes. A historic 112-yearold US townhouse is rolled four blocks away after being placed on a steel undercarriage. The building in Washington DC was on the site of a planned 13-storey hotel but deemed worthy of preservation. Structural specialists Expert House Movers started bricking up the windows in April before lifting the three-storey building on to a wheeled platform. The townhouse was the home of Dr Thomas Martin, one of the longestserving black doctors in the racially mixed Didcot area of the city, who died in 1939.

‘More than 5 a day of no benefit’ EATING more portions of fruit and veg than the recommended ‘five a day’ has no additional benefit in reducing a person’s risk of death, researchers have suggested. Consuming five portions of fruit or vegetables each day is linked to a lower risk of premature death, but eating more portions appears to have no further effect. The findings contradict recent research which found that eating ‘seven a day’ holds the lowest risk of death. The latest study, published on thebmj.com, examined the association between fruit and vegetable

intake and risk of premature deaths. Researchers from China and the US analysed 16 studies involving more than 830,000 participants – 56,000 of whom died during the follow-up period. Morning sickness ‘can be blessing’ for future mums WOMEN who suffer morning sickness often have healthier babies and reduced chance of miscarriage than those who do not, a study says. Mothers-to-be with the nausea also give birth to children who are more intelligent and with fewer birth defects than those without the illness, which affects 85 per cent of pregnancies. The Canadian research into the condition involved 850,000 women in five countries.

Students from Danwon High School, near Seoul, gave evidence for a second day at the trial of 15 crew members involved with the ferry’s navigation, who face charges of negligence and failing to carry out their duty to rescue passengers. The sinking left more than 300 people dead or missing, and most of the victims were students travelling to a resort island on a school trip.

POLICE in China shot dead dozens of knifewielding attackers on Monday morning after they staged assaults on two towns in the western region of Xinjiang. A gang armed with knives attacked a police station and government offices in the town of Elixku, the state Xinhua news agency said. Some moved on to the nearby town of Huangdi, attacking civilians and setting fire to six vehicles. An initial investigation showed that it was an ‘organised and premeditated terrorist attack’, Xinhua added. Rising violence in Xinjiang is blamed on pro-independence militants from the region’s native Uighur Muslim ethnic group.

The Garth Brooks concert saga is a wonderful lesson for all of us that the best laid plans can go astray and to always have a plan B’, writes Aware’s Dr Claire Hayes As I had not bought tickets for Garth Brooks, I was curious, rather than anxious, to see if he would play in Croke Park this summer. Many people were left feeling upset, some were feeling angry and some, possibly, were feeling relieved. All the tears, pleas, prayers did not work. Instead of letting some of his fans down, Garth chose to let them all down. Instead of giving him a licence to play for five nights, we learnt that the Dublin City Manager was prepared to give him a licence to play for four nights. Apparently not as many people actually objected to his playing as was first thought. It is all a bit bewildering. There is no doubt, though, that the consequences of the concerts being called off are costly. So is there anything helpful that we can take from all of this? Before the age of instant gratification, people knew they could make plans, but that they might not always turn out the way they wanted them to. With money came power and one quote I learned for my Leaving Certificate Irish paper was ‘gineann cumhacht caimiléireacht’ – power corrupts. Isn’t it encouraging to know that two men, for whatever reasons, did not step down from what they believed in? Most of us have been in the position where we have agreed to do something and then discovered that either we could not, or did not want to, do it. It can be difficult to convince someone that we really could not do what we had agreed to. We are all great at pushing ourselves so hard to not let other people down. ‘The airline is on strike’ may seem like a plausible reason for not attending something we would prefer not to go to, but the Irish response may be ‘sure there is always the boat, or another airline or …’ Death or a stay in hospital may be what is needed to convince someone that we really couldn’t turn up. So what happens when, for whatever reason, we really don’t want to do whatever we have agreed to do? If we do it anyway (as many of us do), there is a risk that we do so with bad grace and, as my mother used to say, ‘take the good out of it’. If we don’t do it at all then we risk upsetting the other person. There can be a huge, unexpressed fear as to what

might happen then – perhaps other people will be angry with us, blame us, attack us, turn their backs on us and maybe even stop loving us. So we continue doing what others want, even if this is not what is good for us. Is it any wonder, then, that the rate of depression is predicted to rise over the next decade? Maybe it is time we stopped doing things only because we are afraid of what might happen if we don’t. I admire the people involved in the Garth Brooks concerts saga for doing what they wanted. It is easy to see how there was never going to be a solution that pleased everyone. A lot of people have been upset – seriously upset. But – and this is the but that I hope we will remember in the future – we all somehow got on with life and the world did not end because people did not do what other people wanted them to do. One definition of depression is ‘anger turned inwards’ and another is ‘a sense of hopelessness about the self, the world and the future’. I see the reaction to the cancellation of the Garth Brooks concerts as a wonderful example of how we can express our feelings, acknowledge the upset and loss and then move on in a healthy, respectful way. It is a wonderful lesson for all of us that ‘the best laid plans can go astray’, to ‘look before you leap’, ‘don’t count your chickens before they are hatched’ and ‘always have a plan B’! DC ■ people Watcher, I think that the issue that people have with Israel is the fact that the state is based on land-grabbing and a so-called ‘historical right’ for the state of Israel to exist. To explain this situation simply, after WW2, a set of refugees were given permission by the UN to set up their own state on the land of historic palestine. This resulted in the Arab population being unjustly displaced, and creating a new set of refugees, thus causing territorial, religious and racial tension. Since this time, Israel has not

While both sides have their differences, the common ground is that they have both committed war crimes. Israel, having been the victim of great persecution previously, should know better. What did you think when you heard about the movie’s unlikely ensemble of heroes? Crazy but also really cool. Two of the key characters are totally CGI, which is amazing – in fact, Groot, the tree, is my favourite.

ChriS pratt The other day I met Patrick Stewart at a convention and I made a video of him saying: ‘Hi, Marie,’ to my mum. I owe so much to Doctor Who. It has done so much for me, because I’d barely done anything beforehand.

What did you learn at r plAys Guardians of the Galaxy The former docTor who sTAnebulA n boot camp? I trained with a bAld, blue-skinned villAi personal trainer four times a week to bulk up. I don’t work out much normally so it was pretty intense. And then every day I wasn’t working on the film I’d have to do martial arts and they’d teach me how to kick and punch over and over again. It felt like I was in a Rocky montage.

Making a movie like this looks fun but what is the reality? It feels surreal to be at the centre of such a huge production that is costing thousands of dollars a second. There are hundreds of people around and thousands of tons of steel and in the middle of it all is you in a leather jacket with a mask doing a scene where you’re dancing. It is kind of like, ‘Oh my God! If I mess this up I am never going to work again. This could be the biggest disaster ever…’

the scene where you dance is hilarious. are you a good mover? All my dancing is comedy dancing and, luckily, it is almost impossible to embarrass me. But doing that scene was embarrassing. It was one of the few scenes I have with Lee Pace and he is a big Juilliard-trained actor, with this booming voice and we have 100 actors behind us in alien make-up, which took hours to put on. And there’s me having to bust some moves and dance. F***! If I were any smarter I’d have had a crippling anxiety attack. did you have any mishaps when you were filming? My mask would fly off a lot in the wind. They had to bolt the mask to my head and I couldn’t breathe very well. That was pretty claustrophobic. Quill has a touch of indiana Jones or han Solo about him. did the comedy come more naturally than the action-hero side? Definitely – it’s the big movie-star lines that I have trouble with. I was always the class clown at school.

how did you feel when you first shaved your head for the role? I went to bed and when I woke up in the morning, that’s when it really hit me. I was like: ‘Aargh!’ and I didn’t want to touch my scalp. Then when it grows back you go through some weird stages. First there’s the stubble and then it just started to grow vertically for ages and it didn’t ever drop. With this and doctor Who, you’re building quite a sci-fi fan base… I’ve always loved sci-fi. I loved watching The X-Files and my mum is a huge sci-fi fan. She loves all the Star Treks, so I grew up with that around me. Now it’s like her dreams have come true.

Were you sceptical about doing a comic-book movie? Not sceptical. Confused. When I was offered the audition I had never heard of Drax or Guardians Of The Galaxy. But I was lucky enough that my acting coach is a serious comic-book geek and was familiar with my character.

Your character has some very funny lines. how hard was it to get the delivery right? The fact that Drax doesn’t realise what he says is funny is what makes it funny. If you can get a hold of that, it becomes very easy. And it doesn’t hurt having guys like Chris Pratt to play off. He really is a hysterical person. apparently you’ve encouraged Chris to try WWe. ever seen him wrestle? No but I have seen him train. What was your reaction when you heard the movie featured a talking raccoon and a sentient tree? I’d never heard of Guardians Of The Galaxy. I never read comics but I liked the director James Gunn. I loved his movie Slither and he felt to me like the kind of kid I used to hang out with. He isn’t afraid of doing a film that has a raccoon and a tree. how long did it take to apply that green make-up? Four to five hours a day. After 16 hours of work in the make-up, the one thing you are dying to do is submerge yourself in a hot tub. You feel your pores sighing as you breathe all the toxins out. Were you a tomboy growing up? I always described myself as a tomboy but now I think I was just one more kid. I wasn’t a girl, I wasn’t a boy, I was just a kid. If I wanted to play with dolls, I would. If I wanted to be active, I was. My sisters and I were raised to be independent and sometimes it was hard to have friendships with women who just wanted to get pampered. We were more like: ‘I know these dudes who are going to shoot some guns. Do you want to go?’ So we’d get in the truck and we’d go. how old were you when you shot your first gun? Properly? It was while training for Avatar, but when I was little I shot a shotgun by mistake because it was left unattended. THE big RELEAsE

There was something eye-popping about Cher Lloyd when she first appeared on The X Factor back in 2010 – a combination of brittle confidence, elfin beauty and the absolute conviction that being a 16-year-old girl from rural Worcestershire should in no way preclude her from rapping. She only came fourth in the competition but released a No.1 single – unfortunately this single was Swagger Jagger, a ‘Darling Clementine’-sampling sonic monstrosity. An uninspired, incoherent album followed, suggesting nobody quite knew what to do with her. So, the long delays to this aptly titled sophomore effort did not bode well. But the now-married 21-year-old – who has since publicly apologised for past brattish behaviour – has in fact come back with a solid and sometimes rather brilliant pop record. (And having Swedish hit machine Shellback serving as executive producer can’t have hurt one bit.) Big, belting power ballads such as Sirens or Sweet Despair (cowritten with The Gossip’s Beth Ditto) are the main order of the day here – while tracks such as

Something of a cult affair through the late 1980s and early 1990s, The Chills’ popularity suffered as lead singer Martin Phillipps’ health declined over the last ten years. Barring last-minute injury and withdrawal, tonight should see a showdown in the sandpit as arch-rivals Greg Rutherford, Olympic champion, and Chris Tomlinson tear down the runway in the long jump. There’s also the final of the men’s 400m, where Grenada’s Kirani James will be out to show he’s back to the world-beating form of 2012, and the climax of the women’s heptathlon.

I found myself repeatedly asking over the weekend: what is the point of Comic-Con? what difference does it make to you if you see this footage a few days earlier than everyone else? Or in some cases, a few hours? was it really worth an entire day of your life queuing? Films come and go, and as soon as they are released, all of a sudden all that information you had squirreled away in your head becomes completely worthless. But like I said, you really need to be prepared. the convention programme, for example, for comic-related literature, doesn’t have a single picture in it. It is a 48page tome of grids, maps, lists, timesheets, schedules and headacheinducement. the official app was equally difficult. there are Street Fighter tournaments, Call Of Duty tournaments and Magic the Gathering tournaments, Dungeons & Dragons tutorials, film screenings and costume workshops, but just looking at the programme is so overwhelming, if you haven’t planned your route weeks in advance there is only one way to approach it: Just wing it. I decided to just see where the wind took me, check out the toys and take in the costumes, which are the real stars of the show. I consider myself relatively well-versed in the worlds of film, tV, comics and gaming, but even I couldn’t tell who half the people were dressed up as. the effort and dedication cosplayers put into these costumes really is admirable, and that knowing nod when a fan recognises some obscure character seems to make it all worthwhile for them. Start of the in-car wars

REVIEWED MITSUBISHI PHEV

by JOAnnE AHERn

I

n-car connectivity systems are fantastic pieces of technology, offering anything from reading aloud your text messages and taking dictation to streaming music from your phone. They’re not new systems, however, and given the lag time between the arrival of a new car and the rapidly advancing technology, they’re often not the most up to date when they reach the market. The other issue is ease of use – with the phone having to use the car’s system and each car company offering its own, usability ranges from the simple and completely intuitive to the absolutely bonkers and close to unfathomable. However, they’re about to get a whole lot simpler (and smarter). apple and Google have taken their battle for consumer hearts and minds to the road with the announcement of apple carPlay and its arch enemy android auto. These new systems are essentially mirror screens of your apple or android smartphone, projected on to the car’s touchscreen and offering easy to use and familiar touch, voice or button controlled systems. For instance, drivers will be be able to use the maps feature on their phone via the car’s touchscreen, and the voice button on the steering wheel to tell the phone who to call. apple says its system ‘gives iPhone users an incredibly intuitive way to make calls, use Maps, listen to music and access messages with just a word or a touch’. apple’s Greg Joswiak says carPlay has been ‘designed from the ground up’ to give drivers ‘an incredible experience’ using their iPhone in the car. He also says carPlay lets drivers use their phones ‘with minimised distraction’. as well as apple’s core functions, carPlay also supports apps such as Spotify and iHeartradio. Ferrari, Mercedes-Benz and Volvo are the first manufacturers to offer apple carPlay, while BMW Group, Ford, Opel, Honda, Hyundai, Jaguar Land rover, Kia, Mitsubishi, nissan Peugeot, citroen, Subaru, Suzuki and Toyota will all sign up down the line. apple carPlay will be available in compatible vehicles as an update to iOS 7 and works with Lightning-enabled iPhones, including iPhone 5s, iPhone 5c and iPhone 5. Meanwhile, people who use the Google now ‘OK Google’ voice commands on their

Connectivity: Apple CarPlay (top) and Android Auto Google Maps on display (above) phones will see an advanced version on android auto. This system offers turn-by-turn navigation from Google Maps, curated playlists and radio stations through Play Music, easy to use voice search, as well as reminders from Google now – all accessed via your car from your phone. Google also says its system is designed to minimise distraction and ‘is far safer than fumbling around with your phone’. It described cars currently as ‘fundamentally disconnected vehicles’ and said that it has partnered with motor companies and technology partners to ‘figure out the best way to bring android into the car’. Director of android engineering Patrick Brady says: ‘android auto combines the best of both worlds – so you get the connected apps and services on your smartphone with the physical controls that were optimised for driving in your car.’ android developer Henry newton-Dunn adds: ‘We focused it down to the controls the driver really needs within the driving space. ‘We’ve made Google apps easy to use for the

car. We’ve got easy to access touch targets and a simplified interface. The voice technology we’re using is super conversational.’ Some 27 of the world’s major car manufacturers, including Ford, Volkswagen, audi and nissan have signed up to android auto and It should start to appear in cars later this year. Meanwhile, Microsoft is also working on its own in-car connectivity system. It’s currently a concept and no launch date has been given. Microsoft’s Steve Teixeira, however, described it as ‘a concept we’re working very seriously on’. There’s very little detail yet on how these systems will be installed in cars, or what effect they’ll have on the second hand car market, but presumably each car will support all systems and drivers won’t have to choose their car based on their current phone. and you also shouldn’t have to worry about penalty points for using your phone while driving. nEW AUDI TT TO SET A ‘RECORD LOW’ In FUEL EMISSIOnS FOR SPORTS CAR RAnGE

nCT set to introduce more customer-friendly measures

THE new Audi TT was unveiled to Irish audiences to much fanfare earlier this month. Expected in Ireland later this year, the third-generation model is lighter than its predecessor, with a lower centre of gravity and driving position. Audi also says it has lower fuel consumption, improved driving dynamics and better handling. Audi believes the 2.0 TDI manual front-wheel drive model will be the most popular in Ireland. It has a top speed of 234kmh, 0-100kmh acceleration time of 7.2seconds and a combined fuel efficiency of 4.2l/100kmh. Fuel emissions are 110g/km, putting it in the €190 annual road tax bracket. Audi says this is ‘a new record low level in the sports car world’.

NEW ‘customer service enhancements’ are being introduced to the NCT. From this week, odometer readings will be printed on NCT certificates, with up to a maximum of three previous readings printed on the same cert. Motorists will also be able to book their car in for an NCT test more than 90 days in advance of their due date. The car will then receive a two-year certificate, or one-year cert in the case of vehicles older than ten years, from the date it passes the test. NCT operator Applus said this was introduced on foot of lobbying from the motor industry ‘as they see an advantage in being able to sell a vehicle with a full two-year (or one-year) certificate’. Drivers of cars reaching their tenth anniversary will also be able to present early and get a two-year cert, it said.

Outside, the hybrid gets a unique grille and bumpers. Comfort: Spacious interior, good leg room, large boot and commanding driving position. Transmission: 2.0-litre petrol hybrid (automatic) Drivability: The PHEV has three drive modes – the totally electric EV, Series Hybrid – a combination of EV and generator, and Parallel Hybrid Mode, where the car is pretty much driven by the 2.0-litre petrol engine. It has an EV range of 52km (total combined range is 824km) and can reach speeds of up to 120kmh in EV mode. Our first impressions are that it drives well – strong and powerful – but I’m looking forward to checking out the plethora of hybrid technology and drive modes on a longer test run later Technology: A pedestrian alarm system which alerts walkers to the vehicle’s presence when the car’s in silent EV mode is standard, as are dual-zone air conditioning, Bluetooth handsfree system, a six-speaker radio/CD infotainment unit with USB port, cruise control, electric windows, rear parking sensors and automatic wipers. A

yoga retreat in Italy? Sounds great, I think, with Tuscany and the amalfi coast in mind. But this is not a retreat in one of the usual Italian hot spots. I’m heading to Puglia, hidden in the heel of Italy’s famous boot. Puglia is home to 725kilometres of adriatic coastline, Unesco World Heritage sites, baroque architecture, natural grottos and old-school charm. and it’s beautiful. amid Puglia’s pretty hilltops, where ancient whitewashed trulli (conical-roofed stone huts) scatter the landscape, it is easy to see why the yoga scene has been steadily growing. With three trulli of its own, the Kaliyoga retreat at La Masseria Pavone is set in the grounds of a restored farmstead and 17thcentury manor house. There’s a secluded pool, tree hammocks and a hot tub with views of vineyards and olive groves. My room appeals to the little girl in me: it’s in a mezzanine right at

The Kaliyoga team has two simple rules: no loud music by the pool and no phones or laptops at dinner. My teacher Luce is an Italian with a background in ananda, Satyananda and Kriya yoga, and spent two years studying prana-yama (yoga breath control). ‘I want to bring you different things – you can choose which works for you and leave those that don’t,’ she says. and fair play, she even has the most sceptical among us signing up for chanting sessions. Room to improve ahead of next year’s world cup by gAvin HOwARTH

PAUL O’CONNELL believes the foundations are in place for Ireland to contend at next year’s World Cup, but the Irish skipper insists that the Six Nations champions must improve this season. Since the arrival of Joe Schmidt as head coach last year, Ireland have recovered from a slow start in 2013 to win six out of seven Tests so far in 2014, and yet O’Connell explained that the Irish players still have a lot more to learn from the New Zealander.

‘[The tour] certainly broadens the base of our squad and when you look back at teams that have won the World Cup they’ve had very big squads, very competitive squads and I think that’s happened from the summer tour, O’Connell added. We’ve added to our squad which can really com-

‘I do wish the body was more willing’ ‘Joe’s always changing, I think even the Leinster guys would say that, some of the stuff he does now he never did with them. ‘Some guys who were on the tour who hadn’t worked with him before have only had two weeks with him and that was a big learning curve for them,’ O’Connell told Metro Herald, before hinting at Ireland’s ambitions to win the World Cup.

pete and are now experienced under Joe and his way of doing things.’ The Munster second row pointed to Ireland’s results

this year against World Cup contenders England and France (a tight loss in London and a title-clinching win in Paris) as indicators of Ireland’s potential in the World Cup. ‘Joe said early on was about marginal improvements all the time, both as an individual and as a team, I think that by a n d large up to the Six Nations we did that. ‘So if we

can improve from that base we’ll be in a good place for the tournament,’ he added. With Anthony Foley in charge of Munster and Ireland taking on South Africa and Australia in November, O’Connell is eager to get on to the pitch, particularly given that the 34-year-old has been injury free this summer. ‘I’m enjoying it as much as ever, at times I do wish the body was a little bit more willing. ‘It’s been frustrating in the last couple of years not being able to have the quality pre-season I’d like,’ said O’Connell, who has had to deal with pelvic, knee and arm injuries. ‘But this year I’ve been able to take part in everything and I’ve really enjoyed it, so the World Cup is in the back of my mind, but the real focus is on pre-season and helping me into the new year,’ the skipper added.

Solar power: Paul O’Connell, along with Simon Zebo, sported new look jerseys at the launch of the Adidas Munster rugby 2014/2015 alternate kit. The new solar green jersey is available to buy from this Friday in Life Style Sports stores nationwide and online at www.lifestylesports.com/munster

gALwAy RAcEs Vastonea bounced back to his best to record a second victory at the Topaz Mile Handicap on day two of the Galway Festival. Sent off a 12-1 chance this time around, 7lb-claimer Gary Halpin produced the grey with a perfectlytimed run to hit the front inside the final furlong. Piri Wango had kicked for home on the turn but he had no answer to Vastonea’s challenge, going down by three-quarters of a length with British raider Baraweez claiming third after trying to come between the horses. ‘Gary gave him a good ride, he didn’t get into any trouble and I’m delighted,’ said Kevin Prendergast, whose charge won the €115,000 event in 2012 but had to settle for third behind Brendan Bracken when defending his title last year. It was Halpin’s biggest win to date.

Italian champion Vincenzo Nibali, who won this year’s Tour de France, said he is interested in racing the Giro, which he won in 2013. Nibali said: ‘I have a very special bond with the Giro. He is a player i consider fundamental and he wants to stay here.’ Juve’s sporting director Giuseppe Marotta added that the club would not sell Vidal (pictured), unless he made clear he wanted to go. ‘We don’t want to sell, there are only rumours because he is among the best players in the world,’ Marotta said.

LUKE SHAW has been told to train on his own after new Manchester United manager Louis van Gaal criticised his fitness levels. The 19-year-old only completed his £30million move from Southampton last month, a world-record fee for a teenager, but that hasn’t prevented Van Gaal from taking extreme measures to knock the England left-back into shape. Shaw trained away from his team-mates yesterday during an open session at the Washington Redskins’ FedEx Field on the club’s North American pre-season tour. ‘I am always a trainer who sees the individuals and what each player needs,’

gold blames jet lag for ‘sack sam’ tweet gaffe WESt HaM co-chairman David Gold has blamed jet lag for a social media mistake that suggested he wanted to see manager Sam allardyce leave the club. Having lost both of their pre-season tour matches in new Zealand, and with striker andy carroll once again ruled out for the start of the new campaign, it has been a tough return to work for the Hammers’ manager. co-owners David Sullivan and Gold kept faith in allardyce following calls for his head towards the end of last season, but the latter

was left to explain social media activity which suggested he wanted the 59-year-old to leave. On returning from their pre-season tour, Gold favourited a tweet sent to him which called for allardyce to be sacked. ‘Is today the day we get rid of BFS?? @davidgold fingers crossed,’ it read ‘BFS’ or ‘Big Fat Sam’ is a derogatory nickname bestowed upon allardyce by supporters unhappy with the manager’s style of football. Gold returned to twitter in an attempt to explain the reasons behind his gaffe. ‘after a 33-hour flight from new

Zealand, I was in my car scanning through my tweets and it seems I accidentally favourited one,’ he wrote. ‘I should clarify that I did not and would never deliberately or intentionally endorse a tweet that questions our manager’s position. Lesson: don’t use twitter when you’re jetlagged!’ Sullivan also seemed to make allardyce’s position more awkward last week when he revealed the board and the boss were at odds over the future of Ravel Morrison – with the owners wanting to tie the midfielder down to a long-term contract, despite allardyce saying he does not have a future in his side.

ZEBO OUT TO SEcURE HiS iRELAnD pLAcE AFTER SHining pERFORMAncES On THE SUMMER TOUR

“i’m pretty confident of where i’m at as a rugby player”

SIMON ZEBO is confident his positive performances on the summer tour to Argentina have put him on the right track to win back his Ireland place, writes Gavin Howarth. The Ireland and Munster winger started both Tests in Argentina, scoring one try, and with the World Cup looming in a little over a year’s time he feels back to his best. ‘With Ireland it was good on tour,’ said Zebo, who missed out on the November Test series through injury and then the Six Nations as he slowly rebuilt his form. ‘I thought I played really well [in Argentina], I was happy because I hadn’t played in a couple of weeks and showed some seriously sharp touches and to dot down for a score, it was positive. ‘It all leads into a big year ahead with the World Cup at the end of it so everybody is vying for their place – it’s important to hit the ground running now in September.’ Foot and ankle injuries have interrupted Zebo’s Ireland career since the 2013 Six Nations, but the 24year-old, who is hoping to be back in action in round two or three of the Guinness PRO12, is optimistic about his future in the green jersey. ‘I won’t be focused too much [on the World Cup], I’ll let my performances speak for themselves,’ he added. ‘Generally when I get on to the pitch I tend to give it 100 per cent so that means me playing well most of the time. I’m pretty confident of where I’m at as a rugby player and where I want to be come World Cup time.’

Berget a ‘perfect fit’

Celtic boss delighted with the versatility of Norwegian signing by pARAic MORgAn RONNIE Deila believes new signing Jo Inge Berget is a ‘perfect match’ for Celtic. The Norwegian international completed a six-month loan deal from Cardiff City on Monday and went straight into the Hoops squad for the first-leg of their Champions League third qualifier against Legia Warsaw in Poland tonight. The 23-year-old former Molde forward who played for Deila at Norwegian club Stromsgodset is happy to play ‘anywhere up front’, and it is that versatility which the Parkhead boss believes is crucial at this point in the season. Speaking at the team’s hotel in Warsaw, Deila said: ‘I know Jo Inge from the past, we

worked together at Stromsgodset. He is a very intelligent player, a player who knows my systems, he can play all the four forward positions – the wings, number nine or ten. ‘So I am comfortable and I know that he will bring something new to the team.

‘I know that he will bring something new to the team’ ‘We don’t have many options in the wide positions and it is very hard these days when there is so much time left before the window closes to get people in and get people who know the way we want to play, so Jo Inge is a perfect match in that matter.’

Berget is looking to achieve his ambition of playing in the Champions League following his whirlwind move to the Scottish champions. ‘It happened pretty fast,’ he said. ‘I heard a couple of days ago that Ronny was interested and I am really happy that it worked out. ‘I played for him for a year and a half, I know him well and he knows me. ‘He wants to play entertaining football, the same as me. ‘I have been in the qualification (rounds) before but have never played in the Champions League so hopefully I will be able to get there. ‘That is the goal for the club and it should be a goal for the club as

big as it is. This is a great opportunity for me. ‘It is up to me. It didn’t really work out for me in Cardiff, I didn’t play as much as I wanted to but hopefully it will turn around here.’ Deila, in what is becoming a familiar way, straight-batted questions about other possible new signings, saying: ‘We are working very hard to improve the squad. ‘You need to have a list as you can’t always get your first choice. ‘But we have a good scouting department and a lot of options.’ While Berget was added to the squad, striker Tony Watt has left after signing a five-year contract with Belgian club Standard Liege for £1.2million.
