Broken promise on cost of water

THE cost of water for the average household could be one-fifth higher than previously promised by the Government, it emerged yesterday. People who have had a water meter installed will receive a bill based on consumption, but those without one yet are to have an estimated bill. The Commission for Energy Regulation (CER), the independent body reviewing the cost of running Irish Water revealed that with this charge a twoadult occupied home can expect a bill of €278 for the combined water and wastewater services – considerably above the initial cost mooted. The charges are based on adult occupants only, with the costs of children to be covered by the State, as expected. Single adult households will be charged €88 annually for water and then €51 per additional adult thereafter. A single adult availing of the dual service of water and wastewater will pay €176, and up to €102 for every

adult after that. It means that a household of five would have a yearly fee of €584. Water coming from the tap is to cost half a cent a litre – 38 cent for your average power shower or one cent per kettle. To spend a penny, it will cost you close to six cent per typical flush. A spokesperson for St Vincent de Paul said: ‘This establishes a culture of high charging which could have serious implications after 2016, recognised as the end of the transitionary period.’ Fianna Fáil environment spokesman Barry Cowen TD said: ‘These charges are only the beginning. The Government will move towards full cost recovery and this will increase the charges further. ‘It exposes the cynical approach of the Government. We were promised the full details before May’s local elections, but it has taken until the Dáil summer recess for the true cost to be disclosed.’

by DOMinic yEATMAn back to that now.’ Since becoming an erotic blogger five years ago, Ms Houiellebecq says hits to her website have gone up and up. ‘Toys have always been a part of my private sex life – it gave me the idea to start writing about it and I had the idea to start testing sex toys,’ she said. Her reviews proved so popular that adult companies now pay her to test their products. Ms Houiellebecq said: ‘My friends love to ask me about toys. I know the best ones to use and cheapest ones to buy. ‘I get messages from friends saying: “My jiggle balls are broken. What should I get to replace them?”’ added Ms Houiellebecq, from Lincolnshire. Her favourite toy is the iGino One – she also recommends bullet vibrators. FORGET whale song and waves crashing on the shore – the ping of a microwave or the sound of a computer shutting down are the sounds that soothe the modern soul. Other comforting noises in the top 20 include bacon sizzling, the roar of a football crowd and the glug of wine being poured, a poll by Taste Inc found. Respondents rejected

SHE used to work in a bank – but it didn’t give her the job satisfaction she craved. So Cara Houiellebecq became a sex toy tester instead. Yes, yes, yes, it is a real job – she earns €18,000 a year testing and writing about bedroom aids for her erotic blog. One of the perks of the job is that she can boast she has 15 orgasms a week. And her boyfriend, Darren, doesn’t mind that deliverymen call at their home five times a week with toys for her to test drive – or that her office is filled with more than 2,000 sex aids. Ms Houiellebecq spends seven hours a week testing the toys. ‘It’s a great job – it’s never boring,’ said the mother-of-two. ‘I’ve worked in a bank before but I’d never go

MANY singletons wonder if they’ve walked right past their soulmate and missed out on a great opportunity. Teacher Aimee Maiden, 25, and her soldier husband Nick Wheeler, 26, had no idea their paths had crossed until they discovered a grainy photo taken in 1994 – 11 years before they got together. A five-year-old Ms Maiden and her future husband, then six, were pictured making sandcastles yards apart. They were engaged last year and found the photo while leafing through holiday photos at Mr Wheeler’s gran’s house. ‘What makes it more significant was, although I was brought up in Mousehole, Nick and his family didn’t live in Cornwall at the time,’ she said. ‘He and his family were down on holiday from Kent and didn’t move permanently until a year later.’ The pair fell in love after meeting at college. Devastated: Chris Gunness sobs as he is interviewed by Al-Jazeera PICTURE: Al-JAzEERA

n UN Gaza envoy breaks down A UNITED Nations official broke down in tears during a TV interview as he told how the situation in Gaza had ‘reached breaking point’. Former BBC journalist Chris Gunness sobbed as he was interviewed following the destruction of a UN school where 19 people were killed. He said: ‘The rights of Palestinians, even their children, are wholesale denied and it’s appalling.’ Then he paused, battling to hold back tears. After the reporter thanked him, he was overcome, sobbing loudly as he was comforted by a colleague. Later, Mr Gunness said: ‘There are times when tears speak more eloquently than words. Mine pale into insignificance compared with Gaza’s. ‘UNRWA is overwhelmed in Gaza. We have reached breaking point. Our staff are being killed, our shelters overflowing. Where will it end?’

by SHAROn MARRiS Yesterday, it emerged the Palestinian death toll in the Israeli bombardment has topped 1,400, while another 236,374 people have lost their homes. But Israeli prime minister Benjamin Netanyahu was defiant yesterday, saying Israel will destroy Hamas’ tunnel network in Gaza designed for deadly attacks inside Israel, ‘with or without a ceasefire,’ as the military called up another 16,000 reservists to pursue its campaign against Palestinian militants in the densely-populated territory. He added: ‘We have neutralised dozens of terror tunnels and we are committed to complete this mission.’ An unconditional 72-hour humanitarian ceasefire was agreed last night by Israel and Hamas while further negotiations take place.

home digest Not guilty in Romanian teen’s murder Appeal for No online ban for sex offender A JUDGE has refused to make an order preventing a convicted sex offender from contacting children online, after he used Twitter to claim he worked for band One Direction. Brian Mulvihill, 36, was sentenced to 12 years in prison in 2007 for what a judge called ‘an appalling’ aggravated sexual assault on a young woman, which was reduced to eight on appeal. Shortly afterwards he received a five-year term in an Ennis court for a separate sexual assault. Yesterday, Judge Mary Ellen Ring said there was no evidence Mulvihill, originally from Kilkee in Co Clare and currently at Tyrconnell Road, Inchicore, posed a threat to children.

Lyons sex assault sentence increase

Murdered: Marioara

A DUBLIN man has been cleared of the murder of a Romanian teenager who was shot and her body disposed of in the Wicklow mountains. Alan Wilson, 35, of New Street Gardens, Dublin 8, was acquitted of the killing of Marioara Rostas, 18, whose remains lay undiscovered for four years. During the five-week trial the jury heard Ms Rostas had been begging with her brother on January 6, 2008, at the junction of Lombard St and Pearse St when she got into a car. She

was assaulted before being shot four times in the head and buried in a shallow grave near the Sally Gap. Ms Rostas made a phone call to Romania a day after she went missing and read the letters b, r and a or u, which prosecutors said was a house on Brabazon Street, after criminal Fergus O’Hanlon testified he returned to a house on that street to find a dead girl and Wilson with a gun in his hand. Despite his acquittal, Wilson returns to jail to serve time for a knife attack.

Paddy Power admits data of 650,000 punters stolen

BUSINESSMAN Anthony Lyons has had his sentence for sexual assault extended by the Court of Criminal Appeal. The millionaire broker (left) had served six months in jail in 2012 for the sexual assault of a 27-year-old woman almost four years ago. However, yesterday a three-judge court ruled the original sentence of six years with five-and-a-half years suspended was ‘unduly lenient’ and imposed a revised sentence of six years with four suspended, effectively extending his jail time by a further 18 months.

A DJ who cancelled bookings on the mornings of weddings by falsely claiming his father had died is to face extra charges. Rogue trader Michael Stockman, 30, of Knockantern Green, Coleraine, Co Derry, took £800 (€1,000) from six customers, then failed to turn up – often texting his unwitting victims at short notice. Coleraine Magistrates’ Court heard that Stockman’s excuse for cancelling on dates in August and September 2012 was that his father had died the previous day or morning. The businessman, found guilty of nine theft offences earlier this year, will be sentenced in September.

ONE of the biggest bookmakers in Ireland has revealed it was the victim of a cyber attack affecting 649,055 customers worldwide four years ago. Paddy Power said no financial information was stolen but the names, usernames, addresses, email contacts, phone numbers and dates of birth of online betting account holders were compromised in the 2010 hacking. The bookie, famed for its publicity stunts and irreverent marketing campaigns, said the security lapse was an isolated incident. Some 120,849 customers were registered in Ireland. Paddy Power’s managing director of online business Peter O’Donovan insisted no passwords or financial information were taken in the breach and there is no evidence customer accounts have been hit by fraud. ‘We sincerely regret that this breach occurred and we apologise to people who have been inconvenienced as a result,’ he said. ‘We take our responsibilities regarding customer data extremely seriously and have conducted an extensive investigation.’ All affected customers are being contacted by the bookie. Some 87,904 of them are classed as active, having placed a bet online this year. The hack was discovered in May when the bookmaker was told a person in Canada was allegedly in possession of an old dataset of Paddy Power customers. The company reported it to the Garda and took legal action with the assistance of the Ontario Provincial Police to retrieve the compromised dataset from an individual.

Judge to Anglo pair: Enjoy yourselves Fitz to apply for A JUDGE has instructed two former directors of Anglo Irish Bank to ‘enjoy your community service’. Former Anglo director of finance William McAteer, 63, of Greenrath, Tipperary, and former head of Irish lending Pat Whelan, 52, of Malahide, were ordered to carry out 240 hours of community service by Judge Martin Nolan in lieu of a two-year sentence. If they do not complete the community service within one year they will have to serve the prison term, the court heard. Whelan (pictured top right) and McAteer (bottom right) had faced up to five years in prison after they were convicted of breaching the Companies Act by illegally lending

money to the Maple Ten group of investors so they could buy shares in Anglo to stabilise the bank’s plummeting share price. On April 17 last, a jury found the two men guilty on ten charges each of breaching Section 60 of the Companies Act 1963 by lending money to the investors as part of a share support scheme. During a sentencing hearing following the trial, Judge Nolan said a serious crime had been committed but that it would be unjust to jail the men when they acted in the full belief that what they were doing was legal. Instead, he told the pair to ‘enjoy’ their service, with both men smiling briefly at him as he left the court.

free legal aid

FORMeR Anglo Irish Bank chairman Sean FitzPatrick may have to ‘reluctantly’ apply for free legal aid for his upcoming trial on charges of failing to disclose loans worth at least €139million from another bank, a court has heard. FitzPatrick, 65, of Whitshed Road, Greystones, Co Wicklow will not be able to fund his case, set for February 2015, unless he is awarded his costs from a previous trial in which he was acquitted, Judge Mary ellen Ring was told.

Racy pics drive boys Kerr-azy Miranda unveils snaps amid row between Biebs and ex-hubby

IRANDA KERR taunted the men scrapping over her when she responded to her ex-hubby Orlando Bloom’s bust up with Justin Bieber by releasing a topless video. The Aussie made sure she was still at the centre of attention hours after 37-year-old Bloom tried to clobber her alleged fling Justin Bieber outside the Cipriani restaurant in Ibiza on Tuesday. It has also emerged fellow celebrities Leonardo DiCaprio and Lindsay Lohan cheered on Bloom durning the scrap. Kerr’s timing was beyond uncanny as she was unveiled as the new face of jeans brand 7 For All Mankind yesterday. The campaign is called #7Obsessions and focuses on the ‘obsessive nature of a relationship between a man and a woman.’ But it’s the slogan – ‘He loves her. She loves him, but he can’t have her. She has the power. She is in control’ – that makes the campaign’s timing so apt. In the series of black and white images, Kerr seductively gazes into the camera as she poses topless in just a pair of the brand’s jeans. In one image, the Australian model is lying on a bed while Spanish model and actor Jon Kortajarena bites her bare stomach as she gazes into the camera while wearing a lacy black bra and a pair of jeans. There is also an accompanying video which sees Kerr rolling around on a bed topless, clad only in skin-tight demin. ‘I love them. I love them,’ she pants into the

Turkish women turn their frown upside down to defy politician’s call for ‘laughing ban’ in public

THEY’RE not smiling because they are happy – they’re laughing in defiance. Twitter in Turkey has been swamped with thousands of pictures of women laughing after the country’s deputy prime minister demanded they refrain

by AiDAn RADnEDgE from chuckling in public. In a much-mocked speech, Bulent Arinc said women should not giggle in front of others to ‘preserve their decency.’ Yet his anti-laughter stricture

has proved counter-productive. It has provoked many women to pose for pictures using the hashtag ‘#kahkaha’, which means laughter. Former Harry Potter actress Emma Watson, now a goodwill ambassador for UN Women, joined

in by posting a picture of herself laughing. Mr Arinc insists his comments, made on Monday, were taken out of context. But opposition leader Ekmeleddin Ihsanoglu said: ‘Our country needs our women to laugh more than ever.’

Secret torture report ‘will shame America’ EXTREME torture techniques used by the CIA on terror suspects after the 9/11 attacks will shame America, says a new report. A leaked White House staff memo on a still classified Senate report into the US spy agency’s interrogation and detention programme asks what the world will make of the findings. It concludes that controversial tactics, such as the near-drowning technique waterboarding and sleep deprivation, used to get suspects to talk, were more brutal than previously thought. The techniques, first used in 2002, were kept secret from the then

secretary of state Colin Powell and US senators, it also reveals. The document also ‘leaves no doubt that methods used to extract information from terrorist suspects caused profound pain, suffering and humiliation’. It concludes the use of torture ‘outweighed any potential benefit’ as it failed to produce any life-saving intelligence. It is not clear who wrote the memo, or how it will influence president Barack Obama’s response to an inquiry about CIA techniques that were used on al-Qaeda suspects.

Other new measures include house-to-house searches for suspected sufferers in Sierra Leone, as well as quarantining patients within their own homes. Amid concerns the disease could be carried to Europe, airlines association IATA yesterday insisted in a statement that there would be only a ‘low risk’ to fellow passengers if an ebola-infected person flew. The World Health Organisation ruled out recommending travel restrictions or border closures, for now. The disease could only be transmitted when patients are displaying severe symptoms such as internal or external bleeding or vomiting – and no one in such a condition would be fit to fly anyway, the WHO added. Meanwhile, Sierra Leone president Ernest Bai Koroma yesterday declared a public health emergency in the country, which has more reported cases of ebola than any other. Nigeria also suspended the airline Arik Air, operators of the plane which took Patrick Sawyer from Liberia to Lagos last week. He died in the Nigerian city last Friday, with ebola thought to be the cause. The WHO last night announced a €76million response plan, with further details to follow at a summit in Guinea today.

The most difficult part of my job is you get all the signals that man has evolved over 50,000 years: woman makes eye contact, smiles, comes over to sit with you, talks to you and flirts with you and that means you’re going to have sex. you host a talk show with the most beautiful women in the world as guests: Jessica Biel, Kate Beckinsale, Jessica alba, Scarlett Johansson. Then the director says: ‘Cut’, we go to commercial and they say: ‘Thanks a lot’ and walk away. i don’t know what i did in my last life, but this is a new level of Dante’s inferno i’m trapped in.

Do you ever get scared and think: ‘This is Madonna!’? i

There was a film director who came on, i can’t think of his name, and he was really drunk and ran away just before he was about to be introduced. But some of the best guests are the ones who behave that way. We used to have Hunter S Thompson on and he would say: ‘i’ll only be on the show if we can drink and shoot guns’ so i set up a bar and we drank and fired guns and blew things up and that was one of the most memorable shows.

These are war crimes, there is no argument. i am close to tears looking at the report and photos [MH, Thurs] and, not only will i be cancelling our israel holiday, i will also make sure i never purchase any item made in israel again. We take 24/7 rolling TV news feeds for granted, but it was the 1990s that saw a revolution in the world of information. This six-part series is a diverting look back at recent history from an American perspective, beginning with a look at the presidencies of George Bush Sr and Bill Clinton (pictured, playing the saxophone at a presidential campaign fundraiser) and the technical breakthroughs that allowed TV to beam Operation Desert Storm into living rooms, changing forever the way that war is reported.

The story of the rise of Elvis Aaron Presley from impoverished roots in Mississippi to king of rock’n’roll is a familiar one, but Sam Palladio tells it well, taking us back to 1954 and the throwaway recording session at Sun Studios in Memphis, which resulted in That’s Alright (Mama), which launched Elvis on the road to stardom. There’s a musical tribute bonus here, with Candi Staton and The Pierces performing some top Elvis hits.

rON Man, Thor, Captain America, The Avengers... Marvel has good form when it comes to bringing comics to life on the big screen. Its latest is a fun, fizzy tale of misfits in space, starring Chris Pratt as Peter Quill (or Star-Lord, as he likes to be known). Abducted from Earth as a kid, Peter has grown up with space bandits and cheerfully hops from planet to planet doing dodgy deals and bedding alien women. Likeably self-aggrandising, this sci-fi hero has something of the Han Solo about him – and just like Han, he soon finds it’s better to be part of a team. Considerable action follows but there’s always time for one thing: humour. And that is Guardians’ greatest strength. This is far from a pofaced superhero movie, frequently drawing laughs from being the exact opposite. As soon as a puffed-up, tight-suited character gets into position for traditional superhero action, something happens to smash that image – be it

Only in his 30s, Tadhg Murphy has already established himself as a veteran star of stage and screen. Taking a break from his role in Aristocrats, he talks to Daragh Reddin about Berlin, Brian Friel and landing the bigger roles

‘I

was on a train in Berlin when I started crying, really sobbing my heart out. People around me began to move away but when we reached the station this woman got on and sat right beside me. she put her hand on my leg, took out a tissue and handed it to me to wipe my tears away.’ Tadhg Murphy is recalling the moment real life and art collided while filming Dublin Berlin, an indie drama about the plight of an Irish musician named Oisin who suffers a breakdown in the German capital. Director Robert Manson had given the Blackrock-born actor free rein to wander around the city while being filmed from afar and this concerned commuter misconstrued Murphy’s counterfeit tears for real ones.

‘I saw the altar as akin to a stage and although I knew I definitely didn’t want to be priest I did want to be up there working a crowd’ ‘My faith in human beings was restored thanks to this stranger,’ Murphy says. ‘It was a rare example of spontaneous empathy in a big city. we stopped filming to explain to this lady that we were actually shooting a movie; she was just so thrilled there was nothing wrong with me she really didn’t mind at all.’ It’s this uncanny ability to elicit sympathy, fused with a child-like vulnerability, that makes Tadhg Murphy one of Ireland’s most

respected young stage actors. Highlights in a long and varied CV include his affecting and unforced performance as a guileless nineyear-old boy in The Gate’s adaptation of Hugo Hamilton’s The speckled People and his heart-breaking turn as the eponymous antihero in Martin McDonagh’s The Cripple Of Inishmaan. In Brian Friel’s aristocrats, which centres on a once great Catholic dynasty facing the loss of their crumbling Donegal mansion, Murphy plays Casimir, a fantasist who concocts tall tales to fend off the truth about his troubled childhood. ‘Casimir is fundamentally a damaged character,’ Murphy explains. ‘His father was a bigwig judge who terrorised him as a child and there’s no doubt in my mind that he’s suffered quite a lot of abuse. I understand why he’s been forced to construct a world filled with stories that are so much more pleasant than the reality he’s lived through. some theatre-goers might find him a bit peculiar but I happen to admire him and think he’s coped extremely well with the hand he’s been dealt.’ In terms of overcoming adversity, the same could be said of the actor who plays Casimir. when Murphy was a teenager, he suffered horrific injuries after an arrow, fired from a bow, penetrated his right eye and damaged it beyond repair. He now wears a prosthesis. ‘I’ve never seen it as a problem,’ he says cheerfully. ‘I’ve only ever viewed it as a strength and I’ll always feel that way about it. I lost it when I was 13 so I’ve had it for almost all my life [he’s now 35].’ In fact, rather than disguise his injury Murphy has, at times, capitalised on the implant. as skilled archer arne In TV’s Vikings he sports a leather eye patch and he had a prosthetic implant designed for his role in pirate drama Black sails. ‘when I was over in La, there was – believe it or not – a film being made with a main character who had one eye, was slightly effeminate and was from Dublin,’ he laughs. ‘sadly the money fell out and it never came off.’ Murphy was raised as a Catholic and admits it was the Church that fomented

Variety performances: Murphy with fellow actors Tom Hickey and John Kavanagh (main picture pic above), ), on the set of Dublin Berlin, in which he plays play an Irishman who has a breakdown in the German city (above), and as Arne in TV’s Vikings (far left) his interest in performance. ‘I always saw the altar as akin to a stage and although I knew that I definitely didn’t want to be priest I did want to be up there working a crowd. I responded to that sense of ritual.’ He later went on to collaborate with many of the high priests of Irish theatre, including Enda walsh who was so impressed with the actor that he wrote a part especially for him in Penelope, a flamboyant reworking of Homer’s Odyssey.

W

HERE once Murphy grabbed almost every part that came his way, he has recently taken a more selective approach. ‘I was in a production of Hugh Leonard’s Da a few years back at The Gate and there’s a scene between me and John Kavanagh [his aristocrats co-

star] when we’re seated on a park bench and he says to me: “you have to learn to say no to your life.” It was like an epiphany. I actually started to say no to work if I didn’t think it was for me. It paid dividends because more suitable and challenging roles started to come my way, including Lucky in a production of waiting For Godot.’ what is it then that Murphy now looks for before he considers auditioning for a part? ‘It’s hard to say. I’ve always been drawn to characters like Casimir. People who have an innocence about them yet articulate themselves so eloquently. Often they say s**t that I might think but I’d never be able to express. That’s what draws me in and makes me gasp.’ Aristocrats runs until tomorrow at The Abbey Theatre. Dublin Berlin release date as yet to be confirmed

Delayed wages to arrive today after glitch at BOI

Dublin rises fuel fall in negative equity cases

PUBLIC and private sector employees affected by the Bank Of Ireland pay glitch can expect their full wages this morning after a filing problem at the bank. It confirmed ‘a payment file delay’ occurred on their systems, which meant that some payslips were not processed – leaving many disappointed employees without their salary yesterday. A BOI spokeswoman said ‘not all payments’ were affected by the glitch and could not estimate how many people had been affected – however, public service workers such as gardaí, teachers, nurses and civil servants were known to be without payment. She said: ‘Bank of Ireland confirms that a payment of credits was delayed last night [Wednesday] and will not be processed until this evening. This delay only affected one file and the majority of BOI payments processed in a timely manner. ‘The Bank apologies profusely to those customers affected and wishes to reassure them the credits will be in their account by first thing in the morning,’ she added. A spokesperson from the Irish National Teachers’ Organisation said ‘the delay in paying salaries to primary teachers had caused a great deal of worry, disruption and unnecessary hardship’. The INTO called on the bank to ‘provide assurances’ that the matter be resolved ‘immediately’.

nEW figures show a 15 per cent fall in the number of homes in negative equity, the Economic and Social Research Institute has said. Three quarters of that reduction has been in Dublin. The ESRI estimated the number of mortgages in negative equity at the end of 2012 at 314,000. However, the recovery in house prices by the end of last year, particularly in Dublin, where there has been a 28 per cent fall in negative equity homes since 2011, has reduced that number by approximately 45,000. negative equity refers to the price of a property falling below the value of the outstanding mortgage on that property. as well as price rises, mortgage repayments also reduce negative equity. The ESRI said: ‘Over threequarters of the improvement experienced nationally is due to the stronger increase in prices experienced in Dublin.’ Report author Dr David Duffy added that with further increases in house prices expected this year ‘a further decline in negative equity numbers’ should be seen.

A client (let’s call her Martha) came to me in May for interview coaching. She was exhausted and it visibly showed. She had built an impressive career for herself but now was paying the price of a relentless daily commute to work. that commute was two hours each way, adding up to 20 hours a week. Her job gave her a lot but it was just no longer sustainable. She had put on weight as she was eating dinner late at night and not getting to exercise due to exhaustion and lack of time. Understandable, but a rocky road to nowhere at the same time. the reason she was interviewing was simple – the role was closer to home. Was it her ideal role? no. But it was going to give her back 18 hours a week of her life. tempting. Her career is important to her and her industry is predominantly ‘Big Smoke’ based. to carve something out locally was to close the door on developing herself and being in the thrust of her career area. it was going to involve sacrifice. Her employer would not give her more flexible working arrangements to make her existing job sustainable. they wanted her ‘in sight’ and available. i asked could she do her job remotely or from home and her answer was yes. We now know that working in an office is becoming increasingly unpopular, with a growing trend away from the traditional nine-tofive day, according to a new report. A recent survey found that only 14 per cent wanted to work in an office in the future. Jon Andrews from Pwc said the research showed that traditional nine-to-five office working could soon be consigned to history for many employees. employers open to flexible working arrangements will, i believe, reap the benefits. However, Thomas Edison clearly had more to give than his rivals and after skipping over the final hurdle, he was pushed out to collect by three lengths.

Dunne and dusted Defender decides it’s time to end international career by pARAic MORgAn IRELAND defender Richard Dunne has announced his retirement from international football. The 34-year-old QPR player made his debut for his country in 2000, going on to win 80 caps, the last of which came against Kazakhstan last October. Dunne told his club’s official website: ‘Retiring from international football has been an extremely difficult decision for me to make.’ Dunne is currently on tour in Ireland with the QPR squad as they prepare for a return to the Premier League. ‘An extremely difficult decision to make’ He continued: ‘I have represented Ireland since I was 15 and have thoroughly enjoyed all the highs and lows that have come with playing for my country. ‘I will continue to support the team as they embark upon their new campaign under Martin O’Neill, and have every faith that they will qualify for France 2016. ‘I’d like to thank everyone I worked alongside during my time with Ireland, from managers, to players, to backroom staff. I had the pleasure of working with him at Aston Villa, where he had a big influence on the field. ‘He has consistently given 100 per cent every time he has been called on by his country. I wish him all the best in his club career.’ Football Association of Ireland chief John Delaney said: ‘Richard has been a tremendous servant to his country and is truly a player for Ireland to be proud of. ‘I will never forget his performance in Moscow, which was instrumental in winning us qualification for Euro 2012. ‘Richard and his family, particularly his parents Dick and Phyllis, will always be welcome guests in Aviva Stadium. ‘On behalf of the Association, I would like to wish him and his family the very best for the future.’

McGinley admits he is unlikely to select Langer as Ryder wild card EuROPEan captain Paul McGinley has effectively ended speculation that he might consider handing 56-year-old Bernhard Langer one of his three wild cards for September’s Ryder Cup at Gleneagles. world rankings and Bernhard doesn’t play in any tournaments, bar the Masters, where either of those count. ‘It’s very difficult for me to see where Bernhard is so as a result it’s unlikely I should go down there because I’m really spoilt for choice in terms of quality players who are chomping at the bit to get in the team. ‘He needs to

I’ve got my own issues to deal with.’
