Graveyard ‘ghost’ fined for shouting ‘wooooo-oooooh’ by daNiel biNNS
IN hindsight, prankster Anthony Stallard admits it probably wasn’t the best place to pretend to be a ghost. While the joker stopped short of dressing in a white bed sheet, he made a ‘wooooh’ noise as he pretended to be a spook in a graveyard. But grieving relatives failed to see the funny side of his high-jinks and reported him to police. The 24-year-old was arrested and admitted a charge of using threatening or abusive words or behaviour likely to cause distress when he was in court yesterday. Stallard (pictured) had been drinking all day and was kicking a football at headstones with pals when he pulled his ghost impression, the court heard. Tim Concannon, prosecuting, said: ‘While the football was going on this defendant was effectively singing loudly and being disrespectful in among the graves. He was throwing himself backwards, waving his arms about and going, “Woooooh”.’ Denise Saunders, defending, said Stallard accepted his behaviour at the graveyard had been inappropriate. Three months were added to a one-year suspended jail sentence he received last August for assault, for his actions at Kingston cemetery, Portsmouth, UK, on Wednesday. Stallard, who lives in the city, was also fined €44 by magistrates and made to pay a €25 victim surcharge.
ebola priest arrives in europe
Brother Miguel Pajares, the first European victim of the ebola outbreak, was said to be in a stable condition after arriving in Madrid yesterday. The 75-year-old priest – pictured pic being transferred on a sealed stretcher from the plane by aid workers and doctors at the Torrejon de Ardoz military airbase, near Madrid – tested positive after helping to treat victims in Liberia. He has been quarantined at the Hospital Carlos III alongside fellow missionaryy Sister Juliana Bohi, who is not infected picture: ap

Epic: One of the surfers rides a tube wave PICTUREs: ChRIs bURkaRd
Here I am taking the tube home
Clooney’s X-rated Marx impression GEORGE CLOONEY has been accused of dressing up his manhood in a forgotten photo. The groom-to-be once whipped it out while he and Roseanne costar Roseanne Barr were drinking on set in the 1980s. She said he put Groucho Marx glasses on ‘his wiener’ and took a photo that he put ‘on the family fridge for the next day when we came in’. However, Clooney insists Barr is mistaken. ‘I called that move The Face. But I knew better than to do it at that stage of my career. I must have told her the story,’ he said.
Big freeze: The surfers braved ice, snow and sub-zero temperature seas
WHEN you think of surfing, you are more likely to imagine a sunny beach than the Arctic Circle. Not if you’re Chris Burkard, who travelled to Norway to film professional surfers Patrick Millin, Brett Barley and Chadd Konig in action. The foursome braved sub-zero temperatures and rough seas to capture moments of raw beauty in some of the harshest conditions in the world. ‘I almost feel driven to document the Arctic and its beautiful, epic, surreal landscapes,’ said Mr Burkard, 28. ‘As a photographer, my goal is always to inspire other people. I want them to drift away when they look at my images.’ The seven-minute, 53-second clip, entitled Arctic Swell – Surfing The Ends Of The Earth, captured striking scenes, including the ethereal beauty
by GRAHAM kEnT of the Northern Lights and hardy surfers trudging through knee-deep snow to face the roiling waves. But the men managed to get in some down time too, as footage showing Mr Konig playing a ukulele in front of a roaring fire proves. And the 26-year-old can later be seen enjoying a beer in an outdoor hot tub – still wearing his wetsuit. ‘Really putting yourself out there in the elements, that’s when you feel like you’re paying the price – but that’s when the greatest rewards come,’ Mr Burkard added. His film was the seventh in a series by SmugMug Films about the world’s ‘most epic photographers’. To watch the video, visit http:// youtu.be/cBJyo0tgLnw.

Coveney: Worried about cheese industry
Jobs warning as Russia bans EU imports IrELAND faces job cuts after russia banned food imports from the West in a row over Ukraine, farming chiefs are warning. President Vladimir Putin’s retaliation for sanctions has been described as a major blow to the Irish dairy industry, which sells food worth tens of millions of euro to russia every year. Sean O’Leary, dairy leader in the Irish Farmers Association, said the ban has knocked the industry and will hit processing jobs at cheesemakers, and farmers’ income. Last year Ireland sold food and drink worth €232million to russia, mostly prepared foods, with cheddar cheese and butter sales worth about €18million. Agriculture Minister Simon Coveney said he was worried in particular about the cheese industry, which he said makes around €4.5m from sales to russia. He said his officials are working to clarify the details of the ban in order to assess the potential knock-on effects on global prices. russian prime minister Dmitry Medvedev said at a televised cabinet meeting the one-year ban covers all imports of meat, fish, milk and milk products, fruit and vegetables from the EU, US, Australia, Canada and Norway. John Comer, of the Irish Creamery Milk Suppliers Association, said while he accepted the negative impact, the ban will force exporters to look at other markets.

Peta: Ad inspired by body part find ‘not in poor taste’ by ORnA cunningHAM
A CHARITY run by the families of homicide victims has said a proposed Peta advert prompted by the discovery of a man’s leg at a Dublin waste plant is ‘in poor taste’. Peta, the People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals foundation, said it is negotiating with local advertisers ‘to place a thought-provoking new billboard in Dublin that shows a severed human leg on a plate’. Peta spokesman Ben Williamson denied that the poster is tasteless. He said: ‘Peta is committed to decreasing suffering, in both animals and humans. What’s tasteless is stuffing ourselves on animal remains.’ He said that ‘hundreds of millions of animals are murdered every year’, ‘suffer horrific mutilations’ and said the conflation of the image with the
recent gruesome discovery ‘highlights Peta’s important message.’ No one has been charged in connection with the find at the Thorntons Recycling plant in west Dublin, but gardaí are treating it as suspicious. Mr Williamson added that ‘our hearts go out to the victim’s family’, but disagreed it was an opportunistic shock tactic to link the image of a leg and the grim find. In a statement, Peta said: ‘While people are understandably horrified
by the idea of finding dismembered human remains, Peta is hoping that some good might come from pointing out that murder – no matter the victim – is wrong. ‘Cows, chickens and pigs also value their lives. Peta points out that eating meat is eating a corpse.’ John Whelan, chairman of victims’ group, AdVIC, said: ‘The Peta ad is in poor taste and is very insensitive to families of victims of homicide whose loved ones were murdered.’

11 drivers on mobile caught ELEVEN motorists earned themselves penalty points and a fine yesterday after officers from the Garda Traffic Corps carried out a two-hour blitz on the M50. Posting photographic evidence on Twitter, they said: ‘Driving on the M50 today and using a mobile phone, fine of €60 and 3 penalty points’. AA Ireland’s Conor Faughnan said after speeding, mobile phone use is now the second highest, and the ‘dumbest’, reason for Irish drivers to receive penalty points. New laws also leave texting drivers open to a court hearing and fines of up to €2,000.
AN TAISCE has called for a ‘national energy policy’ focused on reducing consumption and making sure all Irish people are conscious of conservation. Ireland’s heritage group said buildings around the country could be retrofitted to be more energy efficient, with an annual upgrade target of 100,000 homes, and it warned energy companies are in an ‘exploration race’ to extract more and more fossil fuel. An Taisce is calling for the Government to petition the European Union to agree a 45 per cent energy saving target for 2030.

Prison Service honoured with new stamps set THE Irish Prison Service is being celebrated in the form of new mailing stamps featuring core values within the system. Representing care and custody, rehabilitation, restorative justice and education, the set of four was designed by Zinc Design Consultants. Prison Service director general Michael Donnellan said the
collection honoured ‘every member of staff’, adding that it highlighted the Service was ’not simply a collection of institutions made up of high walls and secure doors’, but it was ‘made up of the men and women’ who ‘work each day behind those walls and doors for the State.’ Launching the new additions, Justice Minister Frances Fitzgerald
said it was ‘a historic occasion’ for the Irish Prison Service and ‘recognition’ of its work. The Service has responsibility for 14 prisons and places of detention, with 3,400 staff managing an average prisoner population of more than 4,000. The stamps are available at main post offices, at the GPO on O’Connell Street or online.

Murder trial prosecutor gives damning verdict on Pistorius
A deceitful witness who dropped the baton of truth
OSCAR PiStORiuS is a ‘deceitful witness’ who dropped the ‘baton of truth’, his murder trial was told. the Paralympian, 27, acted intentionally when he fired four shots through a toilet door and fatally injured girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp, said chief prosecutor Gerrie Nel. ‘the court should have no difficulty
by GRAHAM kEnT in rejecting his full version of events, not only as not reasonably possibly true, but in essence as being absolutely devoid of any truth,’ he told the judge. As the trial in Pretoria nears its end, Mr Nel added: ‘it is the snowball effect of a lie – you tell one lie and it

just becomes too much. You have to keep going and going with these lies.’ Mr Nel went on: ‘the accused was more concerned about defending for his life than entrusting the court with a truthful account of his conduct on that fateful morning.’ the defence will complete its case today and attempt to undermine the
evidence against the athlete. Pistorius insists he mistook Miss Steenkamp for an intruder. the prosecution insists he deliberately killed the FHM model, 29, after a row at home in Pretoria, South Africa, on Valentine’s Day last year. it could take Judge thokozile Masipa up to a month to reach her verdict.
HAMAS yesterday held its first public rally since a cease-fire with Israel, with an official vowing the militant group would never give up its arms and will continue to fight until the Gaza Strip blockade is lifted. The uncompromising rhetoric comes on the third and final day of the truce at a time when Hamas and other Palestinian factions are in Cairo indirectly negotiating with Israel for a permanent cease-fire. Unlike Hamas rallies on previous occasions, only several thousand showed up for the event in the heart of Gaza City. In Cairo, Egyptian security officials struggled to bring the two sides closer together, with one official saying that Hamas and other Gaza militants were refusing to compromise.

Wife finds husband is half-brother
A WIFE has learned her husband is her half-brother on live radio. The woman, Adriana, had asked for help finding her mother Maria, who abandoned her as a baby. Although her partner, Leandro, had an identical story, they thought it was a mere coincidence. But their seven-year relationship was brought into question
after the link was made on The Time Is Now, a Brazilian reunion programme. ‘I don’t believe you’re telling me this,’ Adriana said on air. ‘Now I’m scared to find out Leandro doesn’t want me any more.’ The pair first met ten years ago and have a six-year-old daughter. Usually, as relatives are growing up together, any taboo
desensitises them to sexual attraction – but this is often missing from loved ones who do not know each other. Adriana and Leandro have vowed to remain married. She added: ‘Of course, it would be different if we had known this before – but we didn’t and we fell in love. We told everyone that we’re going to stay husband and wife, whatever anyone might think.’

Vampire movies get a makeover in the new epic DRAcuLA unTOLD, starring Luke Evans. Move over RPatz, there’s new blood in town… The lowdown: A big-budget action movie telling the story of the mythological bloodsucker, first made famous in Bram Stoker’s 1897 novel. What’s different about it? This isn’t the story of a spooky old perv in a big mansion with many years of bloodsucking behind him; it’s more of a prequel. Dracula is a family man who turns into a vamp out of desperation in order to defeat his enemies and protect his wife and child. Who’s in it? Welsh actor Luke Evans (The Hobbit) plays Vlad, while Sarah Gadon (Cosmopolis) is his missus. Dominic Cooper (Mamma Mia!) takes on the role of Mehmed the Second, who can only be a bad guy. Also look out for Charles Dance and Samantha Barks. Vlad: that sounds familiar… Yes, this isn’t the first film to link Dracula with the notorious real-life ruler known as Vlad the Impaler. Word has it Bram Stoker was inspired by him. He was big in the 1400s, which gives this an ancient epic feel. Do we get to see his fangs? Naturally. The trailer promises at least one set of sharp teeth bearing down on porcelain skin. Any action? Loads, and not just mouth-to-neck action: think large-scale battles and armies galore. Needless to say, the squeamish need not apply. Any heart? Hopefully. This is about a man sacrificing his soul for the love of his princess. Vlad may have become a vampire but he still has traces of humanity. This age-old conflict is bound to bring moral dilemmas aplenty. When can i see it? It’s in cinemas on Friday, October 3.

ad Men actor John Slattery turns director with this blackly comic adaptation of Pete dexter’s novel. In one of his final roles, the late, great Philip Seymour Hoffman stars as Mickey Scarpato, resident of a Philadelphia working-class neighbourhood known as God’s Pocket. It’s the late 1970s and petty criminal Mickey has managed to marry the beautiful Jeanie (Mad Men’s Christina Hendricks), who has a son, Leon (Caleb Landry Jones) from a previous relationship. Mickey and Jeanie’s mutual tolerance soon turns to misery after Leon dies at work. Even in the crime-ridden God’s Pocket, Leon was a nasty piece of work, racially taunting an elderly black co-worker and

holding a knife to his throat. Few of his colleagues are inclined to object when Leon winds up dead, less still when the boss instigates a cover-up. Only Jeanie cares, instinctively convinced that her son’s death was no accident, and asks Mickey to investigate. He may well be the worst man for the job. It’s a strange hybrid of crime drama and dark comedy, the latter often strained. Certain events feel too tragic to be funny: queasily, one love scene is intercut with a farcical corpse-related episode. The funniest character is Richard Jenkins’s newspaper columnist, a lazy, boozing, womanising local celebrity whose popularity reveals just what a small neighbourhood this is. The
A nursing home may not seem the natural setting for a gently comic, poignant tale about romance and coming out, but Lilting is an unusual film. Ben Whishaw is Richard, a Londoner reeling from the death of his boyfriend, Kai (Andrew Leung). Seeking out Kai’s Cambodian-Chinese mother in a local retirement home, he longs to help her. She’s formed a bond with a frisky fellow resident, Alan (Peter Bowles), but as she can’t speak English, communication is limited. Spying his opportunity, Richard hires an interpreter, who could also help him explain the nature of his relationship with Kai. But as Kai never came out to his mother, how can he approach the subject? It’s a sensitive, moving story with well-developed characters and touching flashbacks to a credible relationship. Whishaw is an excellent choice to play the slight, sensitive man desperately looking to reach out and find some kind of closure, undeterred by the fact that his closest connection to Kai is a woman from a completely different culture. Highly recommended. As
welcome presence of John Turturro (O Brother, Where art Thou?) brings the Coen brothers to mind, but you get the feeling they’d have found a more comfortable comic tone. Still, God’s Pocket will make you laugh, and Slattery is excellent at creating a strong sense of place, from the dowdy Irish bars to the sweaty factory floors. It’s also uniformly well performed: Seymour Hoffman is heartbreakingly good as the dejected Mickey, and the support cast also includes Eddie Marsan (Inspector Lestrade in Sherlock Holmes) as a volatile funeral director. It’s a shame nearly all the characters are too selfish to root for: only Jeanie emerges as sympathetic, if puzzlingly subservient. The rest of them seem to reap what they sow, even if the punishment outweighs the crime. Anna smith

weLcome to new York (18) HH✩✩✩ If the thought of a naked Gérard Depardieu does not appeal, steer well clear of this drama about a sex-mad Frenchman. Reportedly based on the Dominique StraussKahn scandal, it stars the French actor as Devereaux, an influential businessman accused of assaulting a hotel maid. Before the incident, we see him indulging in lengthy orgies with prostitutes. After the incident, he’s arrested, stripped naked (again), reclothed (hurrah!), imprisoned and released under house arrest with the help of his wife (Jacqueline Bisset), whose tolerance is understandably waning. The real-life story rocked the French political scene – Strauss-Kahn had presidential hopes and rumours of a set-up were rife. But after an intriguing start, director Abel Ferrara manages to make this sensational story surprisingly dull. Perhaps wary of influencing a real-life case, he avoids giving any answers, so this is emotionally unsatisfying. Depardieu also puts in one of his least interesting performances, limited by both material and the largely English-language script. The French have railed against this film, so this does at least have some controversial value, if not a great deal else. As

It’s a small world, so it is – how else to explain the coincidence that has former Corrie stalwart Jim McDonald (Charles Lawson, above) banged up in the very same nick as Peter Barlow? It’s a cruel twist of fate for the accused murderer and lapsed alcoholic – because if we know one thing about Jim, it’s that he likes a drink, so he does. And if Ken catches a whiff of illegal hooch on Peter’s breath, he might leave him to rot.

Wenger holding Verm on Reds bid
ARSENE WENGER doesn’t want Manchester United to sign Thomas Vermaelen but would not stand in his way if he chooses to move abroad. The Belgian’s future has overshadowed Arsenal’s preparations for Sunday’s Community Shield against Manchester City, with Wenger confirming United and others’ interest in the defender. ‘Have we received bids? Yes. I can’t tell you who from but you will know very soon,’ Wenger said, adding of United: ‘I think they could be in the group.’ Barcelona have also been linked with a £10million move for Vermaelen (pictured right), who made just 14 Premier League starts last season. ‘He could leave – he needs to play now,’ added Wenger. He has shown an outstanding attitude but we wouldn’t stand in his way if he finds an interesting opportunity. Ideally, we would like to

sell him abroad and that is an option for us. I don’t want to say how many offers we have but we’ve offers from abroad.’ Wenger has cover should Vermaelen leave, having deployed teenager Calum Chambers in central defence during pre-season, even though the £16m new-boy played at right-back for Southampton last season. ‘Can he play every week? Maybe not, he is 19 years old but he can play a major role,’ claimed Wenger. German World Cup winners Mesut Ozil, Per Mertesacker and Lukas Podolski will not be at Wembley. They do not return to Arsenal until Monday and Wenger confirmed none will be ready for the Premier League opener at home to Crystal Palace.
‘The experience of being in a team that has won a World Cup makes it difficult mentally to be sharp and hungry straight away again,’ he said. Wenger, meanwhile, ruled out a move for Real Madrid’s Sami Khedira. ‘I don’t know who put Khedira on the market – his agent or the press?’ he said. ‘We were never close to signing him. We have offensive midfielders and box-to-box players.’
CeltiC could be handed a sensational Champions league reprieve after Uefa last night launched an investigation into the eligibility of one of legia Warsaw’s players during their 6-1 aggregate win over the Scottish champions. the Polish side confirmed that they had been asked for information from the european governing body. A statement on legia’s official website read: ‘the club announces that in connection with the Celtic FC-legia Warsaw match in the second leg of the third qualifying round of the Champions league, Uefa opened an investigation into the participation of Bartosz Bereszynski. ‘the club is preparing the relevant information and explanations, which will be sent to Uefa. the result of the investigation will be announced immediately after its completion.’ Bereszynski was sent off for violent conduct against Apollon in the final match of legia’s europa league campaign last season. the full-back missed both of legia’s matches against St Patrick’s Athletic in the second qualifying round and sat out the 4-1 first-leg victory over Celtic. But the investigation apparently centres around whether the player was registered against St Pat’s in order to allow a three-match suspension to take effect. Regardless of the outcome, Hoops midfielder Callum McGregor claimed Celtic were taught a harsh european lesson. the 21-year-old said: ‘the game showed what european football is all about. it’s ruthless. ‘People are saying the season has finished before it even started and that is actually disappointing to hear. the league campaign starts next week and there’s a long season ahead.’
