justin and jessica’s irish libel justice HOLLYWOOD couple Justin Timberlake and Jessica Biel don’t have to explain why they lodged their defamation claim in Dublin against a gossip magazine over pictures of the singer partying in a Paris nightclub, an Irish defamation lawyer has said. The singer and the actress lodged a defamation claim against Bauer group, the German publishers of Heat magazine, over an article, photographs and quotes attributed to Biel last month. The court heard the article was based on an un-

by joanne ahern founded report regarding Timberlake’s alleged behaviour at a party in the club after one of his shows. At a brief hearing before Mr Justice Nicholas Kearns, the President of the High Court, lawyers for the couple confirmed a settlement had been reached. And the Bauer group issued an unreserved apology. A lawyer for the Bauer group admitted the article – headlined ‘Justin Timberlake gets flirty with another woman’, ‘It is not his wife!’ and ‘The flirty photos that rocked Justin and Jessica’s marriage’ – was based on an unfounded report.

‘The article was based on an unfounded report regarding Justin Timberlake’s alleged behaviour at a club following a performance in Paris, and also included a number of purported statements improperly attributed to Jessica Biel, which Heat now understands had never been made by her,’ the statement said. ‘The defendant accepts that the article was false and withdraws any inferences that questioned the state of Justin and Jessica’s marriage. The defendant regrets any embarrassment caused to the couple and unreservedly apologises to them.’

Lawrence joins the tributes to ‘gentleman’ designer Oscar star wears dress by de la renta to mark his death by JEnnI MCKnIGHT JENNIFER LAWRENCE appeared to pay a practical tribute to late fashion designer Oscar de la Renta when she wore one of his creations at a glitzy award ceremony. The 24-year-old was seen in a white long-sleeved lace dress by de la Renta at the Elle Women In Hollywood Awards. Monday’s ceremony came on the same day the 82-year-old Dominican-born US designer, who also created Amal Clooney’s wedding dress, passed away at his home. No cause of death was given, but he was diagnosed with cancer in 2006. Singer Taylor Swift, 24, also tweeted: ‘My all-time favourite designer has passed away. ‘Oscar, it was an honor [sic] to wear your creations and to know you. In loving memory.’ Supermodel Naomi Campbell called him a ‘gentleman of fashion’ and fellow designer Diane von Furstenberg added he was ‘a true Renaissance man’. A statement released by his company revealed de la Renta died surrounded by family, friends, and ‘more than a few dogs’. ‘While our hearts are broken by the idea of life without Oscar, he is still very much with us,’ it said. De la Renta is survived by his wife Annette and adopted son, Moises.

Where beagles dare: Pups in mine rescue

A PUPPY was rescued after two days stuck down a mine shaft in west Cork yesterday. Three of Taylor’s siblings had already been safely recovered from the disused pit between Leap and Glandore yesterday afternoon. However, despite the best efforts of Toe Head Coast Guard

on Monday, one poor canine remained down in the dark after he ran further into the mine. The Coast Guard’s Don Healy said the fourth dog was found safe and brought above ground. He added that ‘she was hungry but had no injuries’. It’s a happy result after the team had to conduct a risky

operation in a mine that was some 57m deep. After the 48-hour ordeal, we feel the unnamed pup deserves more than a few treats. It is understood the puppies made their own way into the mine after becoming separated from their master during a hunting trip on Sunday.

The couple’s lawyer, Paul Tweed, who in the past has represented stars such as Britney Spears and Louis Walsh, read a brief statement outside the Four Courts but declined to divulge any details of a financial settlement. ‘Justin Timberlake and Jessica Biel are very satisfied with this categoric retraction of what was a false and unfounded story, together with the comprehensive apology

from Bauer Consumer Media, the publishers of Heat magazine,’ Mr Tweed said. The action could be taken in Dublin as the weekly celebrity magazine is sold in Ireland as well as countries across Europe. David Phelan, managing partner of Hayes Solicitors, who deal with defamation cases, told Metro Herald yesterday that there are several reasons someone might decide to sue for libel here rather than in another jurisdiction.

‘The Defamation Act 2009 makes it relatively quick to get a decision in Ireland compared to elsewhere,’ Mr Phelan said. ‘Also, the bar for a complainant to prove a defamation claim is arguably lower here than in many other countries.’ For example, the UK now requires the claimant has to show ‘substantial harm’ was caused, whereas here it only has to ‘tend to’ injure their reputation in the eyes of reasonable people.

’Hide-bound: Commuters queue at Malahide Dart Station yesterday after a tree fell on the tracks

TREE fALL HALTS RAIL TRAvEL

A FALLEN tree caused transport chaos in Dublin yesterday as many were forced to abandon their rail plans. Iarnród Éireann had to restrict Dart and North Commuter Services when the tree came down in strong winds between Malahide and Clongriffin at approximately 7.20am. Irish Rail said the size of the tree contributed to delays until 9.30am when it was removed. The loss of power and obstruction to the track meant

Dart services were operating between Bray/Greystones and Clongriffin only, for two hours. As relief, Dublin Bus honoured commuter rail tickets, but many voiced annoyance over the lack of an effective remedy. Free park and ride was also made available for those heading to the North. A spokeswoman said Irish Rail acknowledged the problems faced by passengers, but said ‘unfortunately the company isn’t in a position’ to offer alternative services outside of Dublin Bus.

Vandals destroy WT Cosgrave’s headstone

ThE headstone on the grave of Ireland’s first head of the Free State, William T Cosgrave, has been smashed in two. The Celtic cross erected by his family to mark the former Taoiseach’s resting place in Goldenbridge, Inchicore, was destroyed in an attack during the past two days. The cemetery has been targeted by vandals in recent months and in the latest attack, discovered on Monday afternoon, damage

was done to other graves. The plots next to the Grand Canal are under the care of the Glasnevin Trust which said it will meet any cost of replacing the cross. ‘Goldenbridge Cemetery is locked and visited by appointment only, given that there are now relatively few burials at the cemetery. The cemetery has been the target of vandalism over the past number of months and in response to this,

executives of the Glasnevin Trust have recently met with public representatives, Dublin City Council and the Gardaí to discuss the issue,’ said a spokesman Charlie Flanagan, Foreign Affairs Minister, called the desecration ‘beneath contempt’. The vandalism occurred on the eve of the release of a new book on Mr Cosgrave’s life, Judging WT Cosgrave by Michael Laffan, which was being launched by Taoiseach Enda Kenny.

Heirloom: The ring has a thin gold band and an emerald

Veteran Irish-American TV and theatre actor John Finn has starred in Cold Case and films including Catch Me If You Can and The Pelican Brief. In his latest role he plays garda Seán Óg in Irish language drug thriller An Bronntanas

The trailers for An Bronntanas have been intriguingly creepy – what’s it about? It’s a

story of drugs that were intended to be smuggled along the coast of Connemara that are found by a lifeboat crew – and murder and mayhem has ensued around the whole thing. My character’s a local sergeant. My son’s a detective investigating the operation, which has international implications.

Given your experience playing Lt John Stillman on Cold Case, was it easy to slip into the role of an Irish guard? It seems to be what I’m

typecast as, which is fine, but I’d love to do a role in tights and tutu some day. I have a military background so I’m comfortable with the hierarchy and structures of authority, so the role was very comfortable for me.

Enforcing the law seems to run in your family… Yes,

I was involved with the Irish Arts Centre in the 1970s helping them build sets. I had no intention of acting. Then we did Freedom Of The City, a Brian Friel play, and to American ears I could do a believable Irish accent so I played a tiny role in it and was hooked.

do a role in tights and tutu one day

with a guard if that’s what you’re thinking. I wouldn’t even do that in America – it’s just not the way I approach research. The most difficult thing was the Irish language and the challenge of understanding what I was trying to say and saying it in a way that was believable.

How did you cope learning lines as Gaeilge? My grandpar-

ents had it but I didn’t grow up with it at all. I would hear them speak it casually. Occasionally I would find an Irish dictionary and look up a few words. It wasn’t until the 1980s when I was at the Irish Arts Centre in New York that I would dabble in Irish language classes. I quickly realised I would never become fluent. It’s hard to find people to converse with, but it became a lifetime hobby.

What drew you to this role?

I didn’t seek it out; it kind of fell together. I had been working on an independent film in the States and

A DUBLIN singer is appealing for the return of the emerald engagement ring her late grandmother gave her, after she lost it in the city centre. Maud Reardon, frontwoman of art-rockers Maud In Cahoots, believes it may have fallen from her bag outside the Project Arts Centre in Temple Bar, or while walking on George’s Street and Fenian Street on September 29. Ms Reardon said the ring holds great sentimental value to her and her family. She is offering a reward. ‘I am absolutely devastated to have lost it,’ she said.

someone on that film had a script that he was trying to set up in Ireland. He introduced me to director Tommy Collins and he asked me if I was interested in the role. I said ‘Jesus, I’d love to if we could pull it off’. I came over and we talked to the commissioning editor of TG4. I knew they were a little trepidatious about it but it all came together. I feel very fortunate to do something that’s an avocation as well as my career.

You have an Irish passport and citizenship. I’m typecast as an What’s your favourite facet Irish guard, which of the Irish is fine, but I’d love to lifestyle? Now

that’s true. I have cops in my family; my father was one for a while but he switched to the Fire Department in New York City.

One-ring if you found it…

you’ve got me on the spot… If I’m sitting with a good pint and some smoked salmon and brown bread, I’m pretty happy. It’s an atmosphere thing. I really love the west of Ireland. That and a good pint!

What’s next on the agenda for you? There’s tremendous

work in television in the US and a lot of it is in New York so every week there’s new opportunities to get a guest spot on a show so that’s what I’ll be focusing on, but nothing specific at the moment.

So after all this do you still have a passion for an teanga? The language is a real

sore spot for some people in this country. From my point of view, Irish was here before any of us and it’ll be here long after we’re gone, whether people say it’s dead or not. I just think the key is to use it and that’s why it was so exciting to see people like director of photography Cian de Buitléir using it in a practical sense, and not reverting to English. There was no stress about it – it was just the way he worked. It was pretty exciting.

northern ban on buying sex ‘puts women at risk’

A lANDMArk ban on paying for sex in the North has been hailed by Christian groups but denounced by groups representing prostitutes. The province will become the first part of the Uk to back such a clampdown after Stormont Assembly members supported the contentious move in a vote late last night. The proposal to outlaw purchasing sex was among a number of clauses contained in a Bill aimed at amending Northern Ireland’s laws on trafficking and prostitution. Paid-for consensual sex is currently legal in Northern Ireland, though activities such as kerb crawling, brothel keeping and pimping are against the law. A ban will see the region implement a prohibition similar to the model operating in Sweden. The Evangelical Alliance in Northern Ireland praised the bill as a

by DAviD young ‘significant step in the right direction’. However, a statement issued by sex workers said they were ‘devastated’ and claimed the move would drive the trade further underground, making it more dangerous. David Smyth, from the Evangelical Alliance NI, said: ‘While no Bill

‘This law will not help to reduce trafficking’ is perfect, and legislation can only take us so far, this is a significant step in the right direction.’ He added: ‘Sadly, there are an estimated 29.8million people in slavery today – more than were transported during the slave trade. Our hope is that this law will lead to Northern Ireland becoming

a world leader in tackling the human-trafficking problem.’ The statement issued by campaign group Ugly Mugs on behalf of Northern Ireland sex workers said: ‘This new Bill will only drive sex work further underground and make it more dangerous for the most marginalised sex workers.’ It added: ‘We ask the Northern Assembly to reconsider this law and look at the evidence. This law will not reduce trafficking and will make working conditions more unsafe.’ The Human Trafficking and Exploitation Bill was tabled before the Assembly by Democratic Unionist peer lord Morrow. The fate of the Bill’s contentious clause six, proposing the ban on purchasing sex, was uncertain at the outset of the debate, with Sinn Féin’s decision to back the prohibition along with the DUP proving crucial.

French president François Hollande expressed his ‘stupor and sadness’ at the news of his death and said he had cherished Mr de Margerie’s ‘independent character and original personality’. Microsoft’s pay gaffe boss in line for €66m pay package MICROSOFT has given new boss Satya Nadella a pay package worth €66.2million. The software giant’s chief executive received a salary for the fiscal year that ended in June of €722,855 and a €2.8million bonus. Mr Nadella’s pay package was mostly made up of a long-term performancebased stock award worth about €63million. He will not receive any of that until 2019 and it will depend on the performance of Microsoft’s stock relative to companies in the S&P 500 index. He made headlines earlier this month when he was asked whether women should ask for a pay rise, even if they don’t feel comfortable doing so. Mr Nadella’s answer was: ‘It’s not really about asking for the raise but knowing and having faith that the system will actually give you the right raises as you go along.’ He made the remarks at a conference and was immediately criticised by female delegates attending.

The company, based in Redmond, Washington, has had to change its pay structure because former CEOs Bill Gates and Steve Ballmer were not given stock awards because they were already among Microsoft’s largest shareholders.

Blunt becomes an agony uncle

It’ll be Louboutins at dawn when our Dolly hears about this… HE MAY be in the middle of an epic 18-month tour but James Blunt has managed to put some time aside to come to the rescue of troubled Guilty Pleasures readers. After proving himself to be a comic genius on Twitter in dealing with fans and combating haters, James needed no audition to land this special role. Acting as the official Guilty Pleasures agony uncle, 40-year-old Blunty dishes out some hard truths and offers his advice on an array of love life issues and work crisis problems. His new single, When I Find Love Again, and album Moon Landing: Apollo Edition are out on November 3. Got a problem for James to solve? Send it to news@metroherald.ie

Dear James,

I was with a guy for two years. I miss him and think of all our happy times together. We broke up because his family didn’t like that I was older by five years. He is 23. My family are also not that supportive of us because of our ages and finances. What do I do? Secret K, via email Dear Secret K, In matters of love and money, parents are always right. In two years, when your body clock is screaming for babies, he’s going to be 25, and still hoping for a decade of bachelorhood. And if I’m honest, his family didn’t split up with you – he did.

Dear Matty B, If you are both three years old, this is fine. If not, she’s not your girlfriend. She’s just your friend.

Dear James,

I get told all the time, ‘You’re beautiful’. However, I am still single and I keep getting chatted up by mingers. Please advise how I could find ‘the one’ so I never have to say Goodbye My Lover? Western Boy Dear Western Boy, Beggars can’t be choosers, my friend. Those mingers are doing you a favour. Either close your eyes, or drink them pretty.

Dear James,

Me and my boyfriend have been together almost three years now and lived together for two. Recently, he’s started expressing his desire to buy a house and have a baby. However, in the past week, he’s done a 360-degree turn and now doesn’t know what he Matty B, via wants. This is the second time he’s email

I’ve worked hard so why am I being fleeced by high rents?

a

t 24, I was one of the ‘fortunate’ graduates of my generation to gain employment in my area of study in Dublin, unlike the many others who were forced to emigrate or take up jobs in other areas. I say ‘fortunate’, because although I am grateful to have been given a job, I am increasingly frustrated with the quality of life us recent graduates are faced with. My friend and I have been living in Rathmines for the last year and have recently been charged with the task of finding a new place to rent. we were spending €500 per month each (plus bills), which was the upper end of my budget. Now it looks as though we can expect to pay €700+ per month each (plus bills) to rent any two double bedrooms in the Dublin 2/4/6/8/14/16 area. the recent Budget has done nothing but worsen our prospects. If first-time buyers will need to come up with a 20 per cent deposit before applying for a mortgage, now more than ever we should be looking for ways to bring the cost of renting down. Rent control is a process that has worked well in other cities for years, so I cannot understand why our Government is so quick Gráinne to dismiss it.

■ Dear sir/Madam, in your news story yesterday, you call the proposal by trinity scientists to establish vulture restaurants in africa ‘ingenious and unusual’. this is not the case. Vulture restaurants have been an accepted conservation strategy now for 30 years and have already been implemented in India, Nepal and Pakistan as well, over and above southern africa. and without wishing to be pedantic, the picture you feature is a Rüppel’s Griffon vulture, not a white-backed vulture! thanks for highlighting this conservation crisis, nonetheless. Kerri Wolter, VulPro ■ Yesterday’s train delays left hundreds of us waiting at the bus stop in Malahide. However, I was extremely fortunate to receive a lift from a generous man sitting in the nearby line of traffic. On his way into town to teach a class, he noticed everyone standing at the bus stop and very kindly offered a lift to four people. the four of us couldn’t thank him enough for this kind gesture. sadly, I didn’t happen to get his name nor did the other passengers but we would like to extend our deepest thanks to him. It sure brightened up our morning and reduced our delay. Aoife thanks a million.

Treasure chest: Tatum’s character Joaquin from The Book Of Life

Hanging with the magic mike star tells Jane Mulkerrins about fatherhood, wrestling, stripping… and mexican puppets

Channing

Born in Alabama, Tatum grew up in Mississippi and Florida, where he was a school sports star, playing American football and baseball and performing martial arts. As he has recently revealed, however, he struggled with ADHD and dyslexia. ‘I have never considered myself a very smart person,’ he says. After high school, he worked as a roofer, then a stripper, before he was discovered by a model scout. Modelling led to dancing, which led to acting with parts in films such as Havoc and War Of The Worlds. 2006’s Step Up (where he met dancer wife Jenna) brought him a wider audience. In 2012 he starred in three films which made more than $100million at the US box office but he has yet to be considered a serious actor in some quarters. That is likely to change with the release in January of Foxcatcher. He isn’t exactly playing against type, as the Olympic wrestling champion Mark Schulz, but he gives the most talked-about performance of his career so far in a role that demanded intense physical training, including learning to wrestle. ‘It’s the most suffocating sport I have ever played,’ he says. ‘I don’t think my knees will ever be the same after that, and I still have a cauliflower ear. But if I came out of the movie without it, I’d feel like I didn’t do something right.’

‘A

nimated movies are like vacations for actors,’ Channing tatum says with refreshing honesty. ‘i got to show up in my sweatpants every day. Zoe [Saldana, his co-star] jokes that she didn’t even brush her teeth. and there are no wrong lines. i could have spoken French and they’d have probably been like: “maybe that’ll work”.’ ork”.’ He’s not denigrating his own relaxed, ad-lib-heavy efforts in the Book Of My job in that film is to Life; he’s merely do things that wives acknowledging the would not want light relief from his their husbands doing, usual 15-hour days but she’s cool like that... spent on set for films It really is just me telling such as 21 Jump a part of my life, and she Street and White understands that House down. Based on the folklore surrounding mexico’ss day Of the dead, the eye-poppingly colourful 3d film ‘looks like a magical piñata burst open and mexican culture fell out’, he says. tatum is the voice of Joaquin, a swaggering, moustachioed Latin spin on Captain america. Like all the characters, Joaquin’s a wooden marionette-type figure, with hinges for joints, but his broad chest and shoulders – larger in every way than the rest of the ‘cast’ – still manage to mirror and, perhaps, ever so gently mock the famous physique of the man bringing him to life. today, in a hotel in new York’s SoHo, 34-year-old tatum is covered up in a long-sleeved grey t-shirt and jeans. the t-shirt, admittedly, is snug, and i can confirm that tatum’s upper body, even clothed, is as impressive at close quarters as millions of women the world over have imagined. in contrast to his narcissistic animated hero, however, tatum comes across as self aware and sweetly humble. He is also very much a family man. His wife of five years, the actress and Magic marriage: dancer Jenna dewanTatum’s wife Jenna is untroubled by his role tatum, gave birth to their as a male stripper daughter everly 16 months ago. ‘making a children’s film wasn’t a

conscious decision but i can feel the sway that fatherhood has on my creative projects,’ he says. ‘it definitely changes you. When you’re a parent, you want the person you’re responsible for not to make the same mistakes you made. i’m very competitive but i’m going to have to try to let her find her own way.’ this is at least one of his films everly can see before she comes of age. ‘Yes, there’s almost nothing of mine that she can watch any time soon,’ he laughs. ‘maybe Step Up – she’s going to end up watching that a lot.’ it will certainly be some time before he’ll let her watch his current project, magic mike XXL, the sequel to the 2012 hit

which reunites most of the original male strip troupe, including matt Bomer and Joe manganiello. His wife, however, remains untroubled by his thong-sporting performance. ‘She loves magic mike, believe it or not,’ he laughs. ‘Obviously, my job in that film is to do things that wives would not want their husbands doing but she’s cool like that.’ the original film was based on tatum’s own experiences as a male stripper in tampa, Florida. ‘if i was just doing any old movie about strippers, she would probably ask why i wanted to do that,’ he says. ‘But it really is just me telling a part of my life and she understands that.’

you can kill nazis Why does Hollywood love World War II? Fury director David Ayer tells James Mottram it’s about moral certainty

W

hile this year has seen the 100th anniversary of the start of World War i, somebody clearly forgot to tell hollywood. World War ii seems as popular as ever as a setting. To come we have the Angelina Jolie-directed Unbroken, telling the true story of Japanese PoW survivor louis Zamperini. First, though, it’s her other half – Brad Pitt – wedged in a tank in David Ayer’s jawdropping Fury. Set in April 1945, as the Allies push for victory, Fury is an intense ride, with Pitt’s battle-hardened Sgt Don ‘Wardaddy’ Collier commanding a five-man Sherman tank in a narrative that’ll leave you shaking. inspired by the US Army’s

66th Armoured Regiment, it’s a visceral watch – and further proof that film-makers keep returning to World War ii, as Fury’s writerdirector Ayer willingly admits. ‘i think it’s several things,’ he says. ‘One is that black-and-white nature of the conflict itself. everything today is morally murky. World War ii had moral clarity. Plus, Nazis are great bad guys – like zombies. You can kill lots of them and not raise hackles.’ in this case, Fury plays out like a Das Boot on wheels – upping the claustrophobia and camaraderie inside the tank. With its immediacy, it’s the flip-side to Quentin Tarantino’s glib fantasy war flick inglourious Basterds, which also starred Pitt. Yet logan lerman, who plays tank rookie Norman,

Tank boys: Director David Ayer on the set of Fury with Brad Pitt disagrees that World War ii holds a spell over directors. ‘i think most film-makers feel it’s been overdone,’ he claims. True or not, Ayer isn’t ‘most film-makers’. it was his script for corrupt cop drama Training Day that steered star Denzel Washington to an Oscar back in 2002. Other

impressive works include Dark Blue and end Of Watch, which he also directed. So why not cover a more modern-day conflict? ‘Part of the problem is you don’t have the closure of World War ii,’ he says. ‘There’s no container to understand it, no frame, no bookends, because it’s

ongoing.’ Certainly, The hurt locker and Zero Dark Thirty aside, there have been few recent films that have captured the morally grey iraq and Afghanistan conflicts with any real resonance. Ayer cites the ‘exhaustion of the visuals of war’, when it comes to desert-set dramas in the Middle east. ‘Visually, it’s a difficult world to capture,’ he says. With its worldwide settings, from the Pacific to europe, it’s no surprise World War ii is still a draw. And it helps there are still first-hand sources. The cast of Fury met not only military advisors and historians but also four veterans of the Armoured Division. ‘it was amazing to hear the stories from their perspective,’ says lerman. ‘They were so generous. They told us they haven’t talked to people about a lot of these stories since the war. They don’t bring it up. But now they’re talking about it.’ Ayer has already screened the film to veterans from the 66th Armoured Regiment, and he received a resounding response. ‘They all said it’s the most accurate war film they’ve ever seen,’ he says. Given how relentless Fury is, it’s staggering to think what these real soldiers endured. Perhaps after years of hollywood soft-soaping the experience, film-makers are finally getting it right.

Fury opens in cinemas from today.

Holy Moses! This one is epic

‘W

hat’s my favourite plague?’ Joel Edgerton ponders the question for a few seconds before answering with a grin. ‘the frogs! It would have to be the frogs. People were finding them for days!’ the reason for the aussie star’s sudden affection for amphibians is that we’re in the desert north of almeria on the southern tip of spain, where Edgerton is playing the role of Pharaoh Ramses II. It’s Ridley scott’s megabudget take on the Old testament tale of Moses leading his people to freedom from an Egypt afflicted by natural, or supernatural, catastrophes. Cue flies, boils, hail and the aforementioned frogs, a few sad rubber examples of which still dot the vast outdoor set. Which, it should be said, is an incredible thing to behold. One-and-ahalf square kilometres of desert has been whisked several millennia back in time to recreate the city of Pi-Ramses. Clusters of filthy hovels housing the enslaved Israelites nudge mud walls with opulent villa exteriors. Up a slight hill is a dust-choked building site where hundreds of slaves are quite literally being whipped into action, building a startling 50ft-high stone replica of Edgerton’s shaved noggin. Below them is a gallows where a trio of slaves dangle – their daily appraisals presumably didn’t go so well. ‘this is the biggest film I’ve done with anybody,’ reveals scott’s veteran production designer, arthur Max, as he escorts me round his mammoth crea-

Set up: Ancient Egypt rises again in Ridley Scott’s epic film tion. ‘this set alone is easily the biggest thing I’ve ever built,’ he says. ‘You can take gladiator plus Robin hood and add in a bit more.’ If the set is impressive, the cast is epic, too, with sigourney Weaver and Ben Kingsley among the stars supporting Christian Bale as Moses. ‘this is my first time working with Christian,’ enthuses Edgerton of his elusive co-star. ‘I’ve had the luxury over the past few years to work with people I admired – and Christian is definitely

one of them. he’s is just a nice, regular guy and we have a really good laugh on set.’ With its swords-and-sandals trappings, Exodus bears more than a passing resemblance to scott’s smash hit of 2000, gladiator. But, at first, the director wasn’t interested in what he thought was a dusty old tale more suited to a class of bored sunday school students than a modern multiplex crowd. ‘I originally passed on it,’ scott

Frenemies: Christian Bale and Joel Edgerton as Moses and Ramses reveals during a brief break from filming. ‘I’ll admit I never really paid much attention to RI, as we called it at my secondary modern school. But the more I researched, the more I became fascinated. I was staggered to see what kind of man Moses was. I had no idea he was a military leader and a general. Or the closeness of the original relationship between Ramses and Moses when they were children. and it all just lit a match for me.’

Meanwhile, Edgerton seems quite content to contemplate the truly gargantuan replica of his head, which dominates the equally enormous movie set. ‘I’ve been texting pictures back to my mates,’ he grins. ‘have you got a giant 50ft stone head yet? no! You really should get one. Everyone in hollywood’s got one these days...’

SO BEN, ARE YOU BEIGECORE? A few years ago the music scene seemed to be awash with nice young men with acoustic guitars and quietly soul-baring songs. Their records sold in large quantities, but music writers were often dismissive of what they dubbed ‘The New Boring’ or ‘beigecore’. ‘A journalist mentioned that it was a boring time in pop music, and to be honest I’d kind of agree,’ says Howard, who regularly found himself named alongside the likes of Ed Sheeran. ‘In hindsight, from the outside looking in, the references probably weren’t that far off. There was a batch of us in that singer-songwriter mould... I don’t know what that was about.’ Howard’s new album marks a significant evolution in sonic terms. ‘With the first album I wasn’t so interested in the sounds of amps and synthesizers and the different levels of noises you could make,’ he explains. ‘I sat there and played the guitar and we added a few bits to it. I mainly played acoustic and that was the sound I liked at the time. But this time it felt as though there wasn’t enough substance to that.’

Robert Shore meets singer-songwriter Ben Howard, whose new album marks a break from his quieter debut

‘I

find the importance other people put on fame funny, especially when there aren’t many famous people saying interesting things,’ says millionselling singer-songwriter Ben Howard from behind a pair of dark sunglasses. ‘in the pop scene at the moment it just feels like bright colours and noise a lot of the time.’ Howard, who began his career performing to fellow surfers in his native devon, has sometimes seemed reluctant to embrace his stardom – he famously disappeared to rural ireland after emerging a surprise double winner at last year’s Brits. Surfing and the south-west coastline continue to offer a welcome escape. ‘i spend quite a lot of time out in the sea. That forces you to be a bit more conscious of your surroundings and how lucky you are to have your health. Touring slowly ruins that and then you get back to basics when you get home.’ Predictably, he’s not a huge fan of Twitter. ‘i don’t find it very fun. Everything will be in CAPS LOCK on Twitter in a year’s time. no one will be able to write in small letters any more.’ But you wouldn’t expect anything different from an artist who makes a big emotional impact by whispering rather than shouting. That said, Howard’s new album is a bit louder than his 2011 debut, Every Kingdom. The sound on i forget Where We Were is much more edgily ambient and electric than its ‘safe’ acoustic predecessor. ‘We’re playing as a six-piece at the moment, and that’s one of the elements that have made the record more expansive,’ he explains. Was there any concern at his record label about the more ‘electric’ direction of the new album?

‘no. We were recording for six months before they even heard a demo,’ he says. not many musicians enjoy that much trust. ‘A lot of people battle with labels about these things, but the success of the first album gave us a bit of freedom,’ he says. ‘The thing is,’ he adds with a smile, ‘if no one listens to this record it’ll be a whole different conversation for album three. You have to realise that. But that’s all right.’ He performed lead single End Of The Affair on Later With Jools Holland a few weeks ago. ‘They let us play a seven-and-ahalf-minute song. Madness!’ he laughs. ‘That made us feel good.’ Shows like Holland’s hold a special place in his affections. ‘There aren’t many TV shows that actually have music on them now. Most people know the X factor is entertainment, but the scary thing is there are some people who think it’s a music show.’ Howard built his reputation on the road and has another round of European dates coming up. ‘The band is bigger, and the noise we’re making is slightly grander,’ he says. He also promises a more developed visual element this time around. ‘i don’t dance around the stage. But when you play bigger venues, there has to be an entertainment side to it.’

The ART of staying fit for life Acting your age is key when it comes to exercise, says Vicki-Marie Cossar

H

ow old are you? That might be a personal question but it’s an important one when it comes to exercise. The workout choices we make in our twenties and thirties affect us in later life, says personal trainer wayne léal, who’s developed a system called Age Related Training (ART). He believes that to minimise the aches and pains of ageing, we should consider our fitness choices now. His regimes use three core disciplines: aqua training, yoga and rebounding (a mini trampoline). ‘we tend to do the same exercises throughout our lives,’ he says, ‘but as we age – losing muscle mass, gaining fat and becoming prone to injury – these aren’t necessarily right for your body anymore.’ See panel (right) for the best exercise for your age group.

Let’s suppose that a day later you realise that you now have a cold too. Your eyes are watery and sore, you need tissues, you’re sneezing a lot and beginning to cough. You are feeling really sorry for yourself and possibly even more annoyed towards that little boy. Most of us accept that cold as being part of life and do our best to look after ourselves. We don’t really spend time wondering why that child had a cold, why he happened to be in the same place as us and why we picked it up. We get on with things and hopefully do our best not to

AWARE WITH DR CLAIRE Have you ever shared a very small space with a three-year old boy who has a really bad cold? This could be in the cinema, on a bus, in a doctor’s waiting room or even at your own kitchen table. How you react depends on so many things. If you actually care about the child who is sneezing, coughing and spluttering, you may feel some compassion and even love towards him. Even if he is related to you though, you may feel annoyed or frustrated as you think ‘he’s not even trying to cover his mouth when he coughs’. You probably would not appreciate him directly sneezing on you and might, if you could, move away.

building muscle and bone density,’ Wayne says. And that means getting on a mini trampoline. ‘When done properly, rebounding is one of the most time-efficient, all-round body conditioning routines. Incorporating weights will dramatically increase your workout.’

Caring: Sick children get compassion generously spread our cold to others. Wouldn’t it be great if we all were as skilled at coping when an adult says something or does something that we consider to be upsetting? It doesn’t take much sometimes to trigger us to feel irritable for hours. It could be that someone else sits on the seat we were heading towards, or takes the car space we had spotted. Thoughts such as ‘that’s so unfair’, ‘I was there first’, ‘I knew today was going to be a lousy day’ can actually trigger us to feel upset, frustrated, annoyed and even fed-up. We might

If we believe that the day is going to get worse, then we probably will be right as, without even realising it, we will steadily look for situations to prove that yes, today is a really bad day. We may not notice ourselves becoming grumpy or even aggressive. We might not notice the impact that our mood is having on the people around us and not see how quickly the negativity is spreading. Just think of how our lives would be if we could respond to someone’s grumpiness as gently and compassionately as we would respond to a child with a cold? If we were somehow able to protect ourselves from taking on the negativity and had the skills to acknowledge our own feelings of hurt, upset, annoyance while deliberately focusing on healthy actions we could take to improve things for ourselves? Payne, Ryan make it on to schmidt’s Test squad by DAnny HOgAn Ulster centre Jared Payne leads a cast of five uncapped recruits to Ireland’s 37-man autumn test series squad. Payne joins Connacht duo Darragh leader and Nathan White, Munster’s Dave Foley and leinster’s Dominic ryan in head coach Joe schmidt’s senior ranks. New Zealand Under-21 cap Payne has qualified on residency after three years with Ulster, and will compete with Connacht’s robbie Henshaw for Ireland’s outside centre berth. Ulster fly-half Paddy Jackson has failed to make the cut, with schmidt opting for Ian Madigan and Ian Keatley as the support playmakers to Johnny sexton. leinster’s Isaac Boss has also missed out at scrum-half, with Kieran Marmion and eoin reddan challenging Munster’s British and Irish lion Conor Murray. Ulster confirmed backs luke Marshall and Andrew trimble will swell Ireland’s list of significant absentees for the three-test series against south Africa, Georgia and Australia. Ireland will now be shorn of 15 regular faces, with in-form wing trimble ruled out through toe trouble and Marshall suffering medial knee ligament damage. Prop White, lock Foley and flanker Dominic ryan – who starred in lein-

ster’s Cup win over Wasps last weekend – bolster Ireland’s pack resources that have been hit by long-term injuries to Cian Healy, Ulster duo Iain Henderson and Dan tuohy, and backrower sean O’Brien. Connacht full-back leader will offer extra support for the likes of rob Kearney, while all eyes will remain locked on schmidt’s autumn choice to fill the No.13 berth vacated by the retired Brian O’Driscoll. O’Driscoll’s former centre partner Gordon D’Arcy will be expected to retain his accustomed No.12 role, with Connacht’s Henshaw and Ulster’s Payne in the running for the outside centre spot. Ulster’s stuart Olding has started the new campaign in fine form, however, and could also force his way into contention. Ireland will open their autumn series against south Africa on saturday, November 8. Munster lock Paul O’Connell continues as captain, and his presence will be more pivotal than ever given Ireland’s front-five injury list. With Donnacha ryan adding to Ulster duo Henderson and tuohy as lock absentees, O’Connell and Devin toner should continue their developing engine room partnership. Former scarlets boss simon easterby will make his first real steps into international test level since replacing the impressive John Plumtree as forwards coach.

Glasgow Warriors. Ulster rugby, in conjunction with the national medical staff, will seek a second opinion on the management of the injury, however, it is expected that he will be out of rugby for a period of months.’ There was further bad news for the Irish after Trimble’s club and country team-mate luke Marshall was confirmed to have sustained medial ligament damage to his left knee during a clash against Yorkshire Carnegie. He won’t be fit for the autumn internationals for sure. He’ll be missing for a few weeks. ‘Of course he’s frustrated but he’s pretty level headed. His concern is to get fit.’

A referee in Peru was forced to abandon a cup-tie after five players from one team all went down injured at the same time. The team, Defensor Bolivar, happened to be losing 4-1 with just eight minutes remaining. Having

Sunderland players will reimburse fans SUNDERLAND’S shell-shocked players have confirmed they will refund the cost of supporters’ tickets for Saturday’s 8-0 Premier League humiliation at Southampton. More than 2,500 fans made the long trip to the south coast last weekend, and they will be able to claim back the £24 cost of admission, or have the sum donated to children’s hospice Grace House instead. Skipper John O’Shea

premier lge said yesterday: ‘We win and lose as a team, players, staff and fans. However, we wanted to acknowledge and thank the fans who travelled such a long way to give us their backing and despite everything, stayed with us until the final whistle.’ Goalkeeper Vito Mannone suggested the idea, which will cost Sunderland’s players in excess of £60,000.

While the mere presence of a certain Mr Ronaldo will put the jitters up a fragile Liverpool defence – Brendan Rodgers’ team have kept only two clean sheets in 20 matches and just one this season – the crucial action area could come in the spaces immediately behind the Portugal superstar. The key for the Reds’ midfield will be their attempts to cut Ronaldo’s supply line and Henderson will be crucial in winning Brendan’s boys some precious ball. His main target should be master technician Modric, the ringmaster who makes the Galacticos tick. Luka likes facing the Merseysiders; in eight games with Tottenham the Croat won five, drew one and lost just two.

The 36-year-old striker, back at Stamford Bridge after leaving Galatasaray as a free agent in the summer, tucked away another spot-kick when Ales Mertelj handled Willian’s 23rd-minute pass. Drogba was as composed as when deciding that penalty shootout with Bayern Munich at a joyous Allianz Arena two years ago, bagging yet another clinical finish. It was all over bar the shouting on the half-hour when Terry turned goalscorer, rolling in the simplest of chances at the end of a lungbursting, 70-yard run as Chelsea broke at ferocious pace when clearing a Maribor corner. Eden Hazard should have made it four soon after the break but his low cross was then turned in by Mitja Viler in the 54th minute as

the Londoners ran riot. It was not Maribor’s night as the visitors were denied a consolation when Agim Ibraimi’s penalty hit the outside of a post after he was bowled over in the area by Nemanja Matic. Hazard showed Macedonia midfielder Ibraimi how to convert from the spot, making it five after Branislav Ivanovic was bundled over by Marko Suler. Hazard then produced a moment of brilliance to make it six and complete a superb night’s work.

Moyes disrupted winning formula, says Fergie premier league

Accused: Moyes

DAVID MOYES has been accused by Sir Alex Ferguson of tinkering with Manchester United’s winning formula during his brief spell in charge. In his new autobiography, Ferguson criticises his successor for clearing out his backroom staff and slowing United’s style of play. Ferguson is full of praise for Louis van Gaal, though, calling the man who replaced Moyes in the job ‘formidable’. ‘The reason

‘The network was there for David’ them at half-time.’ Ferguson questioned Moyes’ decision to replace assistant manager Mike Phelan, suggesting: ‘David

felt that at such a massive club he had to be sure that all corners were covered in terms of his support system. ‘I felt that network was already there, with plenty of great people already in important slots.’ On Van Gaal, Ferguson wrote: ‘He is what I would call a managers’ coach. He’s one of those committed ultra-professionals. If I had to choose one word for him it would be “formidable”. He was a good choice.’

De Jong’s still two months off return NeWcastle’s siem de Jong says his rehabilitation from injury will take at least another eight weeks. the midfielder, a £6m signing from ajax, suffered a major setback just three games into his Magpies career when he sustained a serious thigh injury. the initial prognosis was he would not be fit until the new year but it was then hoped he would be back sooner than that. However, the 25-year-old (pictured) wrote on his Facebook page: ‘Just saw the surgeon in london and all looks good. still a couple of months to go but I’m going to work hard.’

Now he’s again asked for our support and I told him we won’t any more. We need some fresh air.’

OSCAR PISTORIuS will be ineligible to compete in Paralympic competition for the whole of his fiveyear sentence for killing girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp and may never return to the running track. The six-time Paralympic champion and London 2012 Olympian, who was last month found guilty of culpable homicide, was sentenced in Pretoria yesterday. A member of the 27-year-old’s legal team said he is expected to serve a sixth of the sentence –

around ten months – in jail before being held under house arrest. Pistorius, known as the Blade Runner as a result of his prosthetic carbon fibre running blades, was one of the biggest Paralympic stars in the world for almost a decade after winning his first gold in the Athens Games in 2004, aged 17. However, he will not be free to compete in competitions run by the International Paralympic Committee until 2019, once his sentence has been served. International Paralympic Committee spokesman Craig Spence said: ‘On his prospects of competing, for us he would have to serve the whole term even if he was released early. ‘It [his sentence] will have very little impact [on the Paralympics]. ‘London 2012 showed the

Paralympian movement is about more than just one man. Lots of stars were born there.’ The sentence means 400m specialist Pistorius, will miss the Rio de Janeiro Games in 2016 but could, theoretically, return for Tokyo four years later.
