Greens want Irish Water referendum

THE GrEEn ParTy is calling for a referendum on the public ownership of water. It is campaigning for a clause to be inserted in the Constitution preventing the utility from ever being privatised. Green Party leader Eamon ryan said that the Government had ‘lost the confidence of the people in the way it had gone about the establishment of Irish Water’, with fears of its privatisation being constantly cited by concerned citizens. He added: ‘We can ensure that will never happen by inserting a new article into our Constitution which would guarantee the public ownership of our water supply into the future.’

Man and woman held over fatal city shooting DETEcTIvES investigating the killing of a man in a gun attack in central Dublin have arrested a man and a woman The victim, who has yet to be identified, is believed to have been shot in an apartment complex at Killarney court, near Buckingham Street, on Sunday night. It is suspected that a shotgun was used in the attack in the north inner city at around 11.45pm. The man died at the scene. A woman aged 20 was arrested and is being detained at Store Street garda

station. She is being quizzed under section 30 of the Offences Against the State Act. Gardaí also arrested a 31-year-old male in relation to the murder. He is currently being detained under Section 4 of The criminal Justice Act 1984 at Mountjoy garda station. The area around the shooting was sealed off for a full forensic examination by garda technical experts. The state pathologist was also asked to attend the scene.

The post mortem has been completed and the results have been passed to the investigation team which confirm that the deceased died from gunshot injuries. Investigating gardaí are trying to establish if there is any link with other incidents in the north inner city. A taxi driver was held up at gunpoint during a robbery at Terrace Place, close to Buckingham Street, at around 7.25pm on Sunday night.

It is believed a shotgun was used in the hold-up. The lone attacker made off on foot after demanding cash. In another incident, at 6.10am yesterday, a 55-year-old man was assaulted in a robbery at nearby Mabbot Lane, just off Talbot Street. The victim was taken to the Mater Hospital where he is being treated for minor injuries. A garda spokesman said that there was no link yet made between the robberies and the fatal shooting.

14,000 soles hit streets IT WAS a Kenyan double at the Dublin City Marathon yesterday as Eliud Too won the men’s race while his compatriot Esther Macheria came first in the women’s event. Too came home in a time of 2:14:48. Macheria, who just edged out last year’s winner, Ireland’s Maria McCambridge, finished with a time of 2:34:15. First across the line was wheelchair participant Patrick Monaghan. Too and Monaghan were the first of more than 14,600 runners to complete the 26-mile route through the streets of Dublin as part of the city’s 35th marathon. Turner, who made this book, saw me on stage doing the poem it’s based on. They wanted to turn it into an animated short film so they spent two years making it and it got a couple of million hits on YouTube. Now they’ve turned it into a graphic novel, too. It’s a graphic novel of a jazz-era beat poem about rationalism – I don’t think there’s been anything like it.

It’s had a long life hasn’t it? It has and it’s not easy to consume – it’s polemic and it reflects a certain frustration. Of all the things I’ve written, some you want to come and go – and you wish the internet would let them go – but if anything is going to stick I’m glad this has. It’s about my humanist worldview.

I now live in LA, where there’s a hell of a lot of stupidity around food, vaccines and natural remedies. There’s a lot of crazy stuff about diets and misappropriation of science to sell products. There are some hardcore anti-GM people here too – I don’t agree.

Why’s that? No study shows genetically modified food does any damage to our health. I also don’t believe it’s bad for the environment because you use fewer pesticides, less land and less water. The problems with GM crops are how the patents are exploited and how to stop GM crops flying into non-GM crops but there have always been problems with crops mixing. Do you have a favourite cliché or argument people like Storm come out with?

‘Everything happens for a reason’

What are the highs and lows of coming from Perth? It’s

beautiful but when I was growing up it had a population of 1.2million – and the nearest big city is the same distance as Greece is from London. So it’s isolated and can be quite conservative but I think it’s wonderful. If you feel oppressed by it you might feel you have to escape. I never felt I had to escape – I just felt I had to go on more adventures.

Is there a musical that is regarded as the blueprint for how they should be written?

People think there’s a code for writing musicals but I think they’re wrong. Look at the difference between Rocky Horror, Jesus Christ Superstar, A Little Night Music and Les Mis – there’s no formula. When I wrote Matilda I hadn’t seen a musical for ten years. I didn’t study any structure or ask what you’re meant to do at the end of act one or where the big numbers should go. I love Rocky Horror and Superstar because they’re crazy camp, but for craft you can’t beat Stephen Sondheim. Andrew Williams

Moore has released several solo records but this is his first ‘electric’ LP, post-split. SY drummer Steve Shelley, My Bloody Valentine’s Deb Googe and guitarist James Sedwards join him for an exhilarating ride, charging through the Television/Neil Young-styled Speak To The Wild and joyously riffing Germs Burn, with the Led Zeppelin-ish Tape providing contrast. It’s both thrillingly familiar and newly energised. SO’C

An emotionally resonant and intensely personal hybrid of deep vocal house, dubstep, drum’n’bass and illbient (as in ‘ill’ ambient) electronica, it moved the south londonbased vocalist, producer and DJ (real name Merrisa Campbell) out of the underground and away from the sound that initially had her labelled the queen of UK funky. Her follow-up to that record, which documented the breakdown of a relationship and its fallout, is very much more focused on fantasy than fact. Wait ’Til Night presents 12 lean and noir-ish, very contemporary R&B slow jams in which Cooly G – a mother of two and currently single – reveals her most romantic dreams and libidinous desires. The Weeknd and Banks are working in roughly the same ball park, but old-school dub and reggae are at the core of these tracks, which are also shot through with notes of darkwave, jungle and hip hop, Campbell’s soulful, often barely-there voice meshing with smoky synths and gently fractured beats. However, although Scherzinger’s decision to bare all – including a struggle with bulimia – is an admirable one, the default setting of this album is too often a mawkish confessional mode that totally fails to connect and often falls flat sonically. I have come to the Lone star state in search of my inner cowgirl, dreaming of a gallop across a pink-grapefruit sunset into horizons of spaghetti westerns. Oh to be out there in that colossal landscape, riding the range with the cowboys at the wonderfully named Wildcatter Ranch and go south to visit the alamo, shrine to the Texas rebels in romantic san antonio. across from the Crockett Hotel, I was stumped by my first sight of the historic spot – where 200 Texans lost their lives during an epic 13day siege fighting for independence from Mexico. The alamo’s defensive walls are scarily low. Far from being surrounded by cacti and desert, as it appears in the famous John Wayne movie, the alamo rears up in downtown san antonio, ringed by hotels and gift stores opposite the stone carved entrance. The compound itself and mission church where the besieged prayed for deliverance are, however, refreshingly authentic and a small museum (where the names of the Irish defenders are listed) plus an interesting movie condensing 300 years of history into 15 minutes is thronged with visitors.

Struggling Marussia to miss US Grand Prix MARuSSIA will miss the united States Grand Prix this weekend after becoming the second Formula 1 team in four days to go into administration. THAT was all heart in the south of France on Sunday lunchtime, but courage and guts will only get you so far and Leinster will need a cutting edge if they want to realise their European ambitions. But first let’s take a look at what’s good at Leinster right now. Two come-from-behind wins in the Champions Cup signal their composure and desire in this group of players shorn of gain-line behemoths and international know-how. Against a team bigger in physical stature, Leinster were expected to lift the tempo and tire out the legs of their heavier opponents. Castres’ intensity in defence kept the game tight and slow and in the final 10minutes Leinster relied on their superior fitness and experience to edge themselves clear. Hat tip to Ian Madigan who continues to shine as Leinster’s fulltime kicker and it’s a good feather in his cap to have been responsible for getting his team over the edge by the more traditional use of his boot rather than his razzle dazzle. With Rob Kearney, Shane Jennings and Mike Ross injured, Leinster were without a number of key leaders, and in Jennings and Ross, two real technicians of forward play. The absence of Sean O’Brien and Cian Healy is still being felt although there is no doubt that the back row and Jack McGrath are helping to even out their loss to injury.

Eoin Reddan last week highlighted the reasons for Leinster stuttering in attack, in part because of O’Brien and Healy’s ball-carrying is not an option right now. Reddan cited the need to get to the breakdown faster and be as efficient as possible when they get there. When O’Brien and Healy burst through the gainline it makes the ruck a much more straightforward affair, but without it Leinster need a bit more speed and polish. While Matt O’Connor’s men are addressing the issue – and winning while not reaching their potential – it is to be noted that this was not Toulon and Northampton they trailed these past two weekends – it was Wasps and Castres. They need to regain their potency in attack (they did not look like scoring a try all day against Castres) and this is where Ben Te’o is the wildcard. If he can bring consistent, gain-line breaking threat to midfield he will provide Leinster with a wrecking ball that they really need right now. If Te’o can’t provide that foundation in Europe, then Leinster’s attack could remain bogged down in the construction stage.
