WALKING a tightrope between the roofs of skyscrapers with no net or harness is enough to send most crowds wild. But just in case a few sulky teenagers were still saying ‘meh’, highwire daredevil Nik Wallenda decided to up the ante. He first walked 454ft ‘uphill’ along a cable tied at a 19-degree incline. Next, he made a second crossing – wearing a blindfold. The 35-year-old took little more than a minute to travel 94ft between Chicago’s Marina City towers as thousands of people gasped below. The stunts were broadcast by the Discovery Channel, with a one-second delay so producers could cut away if he plunged to his death. The heir to the Flying

Web Summit ‘worth €102m’ THE Web Summit is worth some €102million to the local economy, the tech event’s organisers have said. Citing Fáilte Ireland figures, they said 86 per cent of the attendees at the RDS from today until Thursday will come from overseas. Over the three-day event, 22,000 guests from 109 countries will view 2,000 startup exhibits along with 700 investors while 1,300 journalists will document the proceedings. Some 13,000 hotel rooms and B&Bs have been booked. Taoiseach Enda Kenny said: ‘The Government is determined to secure the country’s economic recovery by supporting the creation of jobs and one of the ways we will meet that challenge is by continuing to build on Ireland’s success as a digital hub.’ Celeb speakers include Bono and Eva Longoria, while Amazon’s Werner Vogels, Cisco’s Padmasree Warrior, and Google’s Anna Patterson are among the heavy tech hitters taking part.

NOT FAYDE AWAY: Irish musician Johnny Rayge checks out one of our Ad Wheels bikes at the Hopr Web Summit Party at No Name Bar on Fade Street last night. The bikes are busy nipping around town to promote Hopr, the official app of the ‘Night Summit’ (the cool, fun stuff that’s going on after each day of the web summit ends). As they spin, the Ad Wheels spokes illuminate to carry any message you want. Download the Irish-developed Hopr app for Android or iOS to help you decide what to do depending on your mood during the summit and beyond.

Ryanair in vow to cut winter fares

RyANAIR has vowed to cut average fares by up to 10 per cent as part of a bid to fly an additional 5million passengers over the already busy winter period. The Dublin-based carrier believes there are ‘many opportunities’ open to it, such as competing more vigorously at primary airports and in attracting business traffic which tends to travel more during the winter period. Its ‘ambitious’ new forecasts for the six months to March 31 include the plan to fly an additional 2.2million passengers compared with its previous estimate – leading to a total rise of 16 per cent or 5.3million customers on a year earlier. It now expects annual profits of up

to €770million, a rise of 18 per cent on its previous guidance. Profits for the summer half-year, meanwhile, were 32 per cent higher at €795million, the company added. The airline’s recent drive to improve its image is showing signs of paying off, having softened its stance on baggage charges and booking conditions and introduced allocated seating and a new business service. Ryanair said average fares will fall by between 3 per cent and 5 per cent in the current quarter before an aggressive promotional drive will cut fares by between 6 per cent and 10 per cent in the new year.

Amadán sa pharlaimint

As a result, the airline expects to carry 89million customers in the year to March 31, a rise of 9 per cent on a year earlier and the second such upgrade since September. Average fares will be up by 1 per cent to €47 across the year as a result of higher prices over the easter period. Meanwhile, Ryanair opened 57 new routes and added four new bases – in Athens, Brussels, Lisbon and Rome – during the summer period. Its Dublin-based shares rose as much as 10 per cent yesterday, while in London other travel stocks benefited from the signs of increased demand as easyJet and British Airways owner International Airlines Group lifted 2 per cent.

Time to party in the city

IN A bizarre clash during the Northern Ireland Assembly, DUP member Gregory Campbell was accused of ‘making a mockery of the Irish language’. During a debate over the use of Gaeilge and Ulster Scots, Mr Campbell addressed the principal Campbell: Níl deputy speaker by saying: ‘Curry my yoghurt can coca coalyer’. It was apparently in reference to ‘go raibh maith agat, Ceann Comhairle’. Sinn Féin Culture Minister Carál Ní Chuilí has lodged a complaint with the speaker’s office over the incident.

Rail misery as lines shut THOUSANDS of intending rail passengers had to take the bus yesterday after a ‘major signalling fault’ forced the Dart and Northern Commuter lines to shut down. Both services stopped at about 5.50pm. A spokesman for Irish Rail said that an investigation has been launched into the cause of the fault in the company’s computerised signalling system. He added that a back-up system was brought into operation and full services on the lines resumed later with a 30- to 40-minute delay to the normal timetable. Irish Rail apologised to commuters.

Big Leap for commuters IT’S oNe small step for a man, but one giant leap for Dublin’s busy commuters. As part of the National Transport Authority’s bid to improve city travel, Leap card users will receive a €1 discount when they take a second Dublin Bus trip within 90 minutes. Under the terms of the new Leap 90 Discount, children between the ages of 4 and 18 will get a €.70c reimbursement from their second fare. Gerry Murphy, NTA chief executive, said: ‘The new Leap 90

Discount is part of a range of features that make Leap Card use even more attractive. ‘Features such as capping, second journey discounting and auto top-up realise the potential of a smart card,’ he said. ‘The goal is a card that does the work for the public transport customer, makes paying for travel simpler and seamless across operators and offers special value to users.’ The benefit is expected to be extended across all forms of public transport soon.

Judge Anthony Halpin was told the DPP consents to the two bankers, both on €11,000 bail, being returned for trial to the Dublin Circuit Criminal Court. The pair face their next hearing on November 28.

GARDAÍ in Kildare have arrested three men following an alleged abduction of a man in Athy yesterday. The incident happened at St John’s Lane in the town shortly after midday. The victim, who is in his 20s, was assaulted by three men and bundled into a blue Hyundai Santa Fe. The SUV then travelled in the direction of Dublin but was intercepted by gardaí. Teen killer winked as he knifed teacher Attack: Will Cornick stabbed teacher Pictures: PA

‘Good times’, said boy after classroom murder by DANIEL BINNS A BOY was warned he may never be released from jail after pleading guilty yesterday to murdering his teacher during a lesson. Will Cornick winked at a classmate before stabbing Ann Maguire seven times in the back and neck with a kitchen knife, it emerged. Judge Mr Justice Coulson said the 16-year-old must serve at least 20 years before he is considered for release, and told him: ‘It’s quite possible that day may never come.’ Pupils screamed after Cornick’s attack as popular Spanish teacher Mrs Maguire staggered out of the classroom shouting ‘he’s stabbed me in the neck’, prosecutors said. The killer ran down the corridor after the mother of two. Another teacher, Susan Francis, pulled fatally wounded Mrs Maguire into another room and held the door shut with her foot. Cornick then returned to his seat and said ‘good times’. Prosecutor Paul Greaney QC told the court: ‘Ann Maguire was 61 years of age, 5ft 2ins in height and of slim build. The defendant was a full foot taller and was armed with a

Victim: Teacher Ann Maguire large kitchen knife. ‘To describe his attack as cowardly hardly does it justice.’ Cornick was 15 when he carried out the attack at Corpus Christi Catholic College in Leeds, England in April. He had told peers he wanted to murder other school staff, including a pregnant teacher ‘and her unborn child’. The bright pupil had also sent a Facebook message to a friend at Christmas last year, describing Mrs Maguire – whose husband is from Cavan and whose parents were from Mayo – as an ‘absolute f****** bitch that deserves more than death’.

On the day of the killing, he told pupils he was going to attack the veteran teacher – who was approaching retirement after 40 years at the school – and showed them knives he had with him. It was not revealed in court whether the classmates had alerted teachers. Speaking after his arrest, Cornick told a psychiatrist that he had brought a bottle of whisky to school to celebrate after the murder. He said: ‘I decided on Sunday it was going to be a knife. I thought I was just going to go to school and wait for her lesson and do it. I wanted to get caught. That’s why I did it in school. I wanted to be in jail.’ Asked about how Mrs Maguire’s family would feel, he replied: ‘I couldn’t give a s***. I know the victim’s family will be upset but I don’t care. In my eyes, everything I’ve done is fine and dandy.’ The teenager – who the psychiatrist concluded had ‘psychopathic elements to his personality’ – remained expressionless as the judge condemned his ‘total and chilling lack of remorse’. Mr Justice Coulson said his pride in his actions was ‘truly grotesque’.

Unions call for ‘insulting’ abortion ban lift

Leader: Mahony

A group of trade unionists has branded Ireland’s abortion ban an ‘insult to women’ and called on members to repeal it. public servants, shop and general workers, teachers, nurses, students and journalists are among those being asked to throw their weight behind renewed opposition to the eighth amendment to the Constitution. At the campaign launch, TuI member Helen Mahony said trade union leaders rightly opposed the ban in 1983 and should lead a new campaign to have it abolished.

‘It was an insult to women, anti-democratic and an attempt to hold back progress in Ireland on social issues,’ she said. ‘The consequences of the amendment, which have included the X case and the death of Savita Halappanavar, have been worse than we could have imagined in 1983.’ In a statement on the Trade union Campaign To repeal The 8th Amendment, representatives described the ban as archaic, sectarian, an affront to the equal rights of women and a major source of discrimination.

Voters urged to register for gay rights poll gAY rights activists are warning that complacency could cost same-sex marriage advocates the marriage equality referendum next year. A new joint-campaign has been launched to encourage people to register this November, ahead of the vote about changing the Constitution to allow same-sex marriage. Equality groups are warning that decisions are made by those who turn up to vote, saying this ‘voter registration campaign is a critical first step in getting the vote out.’ ‘We want to make sure that no one misses the opportunity to have their voice heard on polling day,’ said Eoin Murphy, All-Ireland Hurling Champion. ‘We can’t afford to miss a single vote and if you’re not registered you can’t vote for civil marriage equality.’ The campaign will run until Tuesday, November 25 – the deadline for signing up to the 2015 register of Electors – and has launched its website, yesequality.ie, for those looking to get involved.

In the shadow of Cairo’s medieval aqueduct, Mohamed Mustafa teaches his 5-year-old son the family’s trade, one shear at a time. Mohamed is one of Cairo’s donkey barbers, an expert in trimming and styling horses, camels, mules, sheep, goats, dogs and donkeys. he is a third-generation qassasseen, the egyptian Arabic term for animal barbers, and his grandfather worked in Cairo’s Abdeen Palace. Mohamed’s father, Mahmoud, taught him the trade and now, near Old Cairo along the road following the aqueduct, he teaches the craft to his son Mustafa.

It is a profession often looked down upon in egyptian society, as he works with the beasts of burden that still roam modern Cairo’s streets, pulling carts filled with vegetables or loads of trash from neighbourhood not neighbourhood. But the work is dangerous: ‘One horse bit my finger off, another horse hit me here,’ Mohamed says, pointing to a scar on his jaw visible through a thick beard. Despite that, Mohamed takes pride in his work. ‘People love us because they trust the quality of work between us,’ he says. ‘they loved my father, and my work is like my father’s work.’

‘I’m lucky to be alive’: English snooker legend Jimmy ‘The Whirlwind’ White has revealed in his new autobiography that he was addicted to crack cocaine at the height of his career after being introduced to the drug by fellow snooker pro Kirk Stevens PICTURE: Pa

White reveals crack cocaine habit cost him 10 world titles SIX-TIME World Championship finalist Jimmy White has told of his battle with crack cocaine addiction. The ‘Whirlwind’, 52, became a huge fans’ favourite in the 1980s and 90s, reaching the Crucible final in 1984 and in every year from 1990 to 1994 but losing on each occasion – four of those to Stephen Hendry. White, though, was hiding a drug habit which cost him up to £10,000 a month, moving from cocaine on to its stronger form. The English star – who told The Sun ‘I’m lucky to be alive’ and admitted drugs ‘probably cost me ten world titles’ – told of smoking crack with his close friend and fellow player Kirk Stevens in a hotel room at the Irish Masters. He wrote in his new autobiography Second Wind, serialised in the same newspaper: ‘Jimmy White... snooker

by METRO HERALD sTAff hero... people’s champion... crack addict. Sounds far-fetched, doesn’t it? But for about three crazy months it was true. ‘I think Kirk tried it first but I’m my own man and I don’t blame anyone else for making me do something as stupid as smoking crack. The blame for that lies at my door only.’ White admitted he had ‘frittered away’ most of the prize money from his illustrious career, during which he has won 23 professional titles including the 1984 Masters, the 1992 UK Championship and two Grand Prix crowns. Recalling the financial cost of his habit, he wrote: ‘I had one sneaky account with NatWest. I started dipping into this every now and then to fund my crack habit. ‘I did the lot in less than three months. Every penny.’

But the thought of being pregnant again? Now i’ve just got my body back ag to feeling normal, i’m not ready to give that up yet. yet.’ read the full interview in the December issue of Women’s Health on sale tomorrow.

60 seconds Mailbox Tell us about your character in The Necessary Death Of Charlie Countryman. I play

Karl, a wannabe porn star who goes by the name of Boris Pecker. The film is set around Shia LaBeouf’s character, who sees the ghost of his mother, which tells him to go to Bucharest to find himself. Along the way, he stumbles upon Karl and James Buckley’s character, Luke. We become his friends and do lots of drugs. I overdose on Viagra. It was fun. It was the most crazy, ridiculous film I’ve ever been in.

laid-back. It’s such a hard industry to start out in. I’m very grateful for the Harry Potter films because everything I’m doing now is thanks to that. When I started, I was very naïve. I’d only done a school play. For my family, it was a big change. We’ve all learnt a lot from it.

Russia backs rebel poll win 24 drown on migrant boat

ukRAINE: Russia yesterday stirred up more tensions with the West by backing separatist election victories in eastern Ukraine. It said the vote in Donetsk – easily won by rebel leader Alexander Zakharchenko – and Luhansk will give regions more stability. The US and Europe branded the polls an abuse of Ukrainian law.

TuRkEy: At least 24 people died after a boat carrying suspected migrants sank yesterday. The passengers, thought to be from Afghanistan and Syria, included 12 children. The boat got into trouble in the Bosphorus Strait off the coast of Istanbul. Seven people were rescued and a further 12 are believed to be missing.

Riddle of nuclear drones

Fury at polanski arrest bid

FRANcE: Tiny unmanned drones have been spotted spying on nuclear power stations, security chiefs revealed yesterday. About 15 mystery flights over six sites have been recorded since October 1. Environment minister Ségolène Royal said investigators have no leads about the breach of airspace.

pOLAND: US officials who ordered the arrest of Roman Polanski in his homeland have been criticised by a presidential aide. The film director, 81, has been wanted on sex charges in the US since 1977. He evaded arrest in Warsaw last week. Adviser Tomasz Nałęcz said it was not appropriate to arrest a ‘child of the Holocaust’.

STANDING on the site of the worst terrorist attack in US history, the resurrected World Trade Center building has opened again for business. It welcomed staff from publishing giant Condé Nast yesterday as the first tenants in the 104-storey tower. Patrick Foyle, executive director of the Port Authority, which owns the building, said: ‘The New York city skyline is whole again, as One World Trade

Handcuffed: Rurik Jutting is taken to court PICTURE: EPa

‘Psycho’ Jutting left cheat fiancée before murdering two prostitutes THE UK banker accused of murdering two prostitutes in Hong Kong had called off his engagement after his fiancée cheated on him, it has emerged. Rurik Jutting – who described himself as a ‘psychopath’ – appeared handcuffed in court yesterday as the victims were named as 25-year-old Sumarti Ningsih and Jesse Lorena, 32. The 29-year-old is due to take part in a police reconstruction after the two Indonesian women were found murdered in his 31stfloor flat on Saturday. Jutting walked out of his job with Bank of America Merril Lynch less than a week ago, and emails sent to his account were

answered with an out-of-office reply that read: ‘For urgent inquiries, or indeed any inquiries, please contact someone who is not an insane psychopath. ‘For escalation, please contact God, though suspect the devil will have custody. (Last line only really worked if I had followed through…)’. A former friend claimed that the Cambridge graduate had got engaged to a British colleague while living in London four

years ago but suffered an ‘extreme’ reaction when she had an affair’. The body of Ms Ningsih was found in a trunk on the balcony, while Ms Lorena was found unconscious and bleeding before dying at the scene.

Branson: I’ll test Galactic with my family DEFIANT Richard Branson has insisted he will not let paying passengers fly in his spaceship until he has taken the trip himself with his family. He also hit out at speculation about what caused his Virgin Galactic SpaceShipTwo to crash in the Mojave Desert in California on Friday, killing 39-year-old co-pilot Michael Alsbury and badly injuring pilot Peter Siebold. Branson said: ‘We will not fly members of the public unless we can fly myself and

11

family members. We have to be absolutely certain that our spaceship is thoroughly tested and we are ready to go to space. I’m confident that Virgin Galactic will go and do something extremely important.’ The 64-year-old wants Galactic to take the first space tourists more than 62 miles above the Earth and is selling seats for the first space pioneers at €200,000 each. Branson said his team of the

400 ‘best rocket engineers and spaceship engineers in the world’ would continue their work. He hit out at speculation about the accident, which he said was inaccurate. Branson insisted there had not been an explosion and ‘the rumours and the innuendoes and self-proclaimed experts will be put back in the box’ when the National Transportation Safety Board report comes out.

I

learned about Mexican food from my grandmother, who taught me the joy of cooking for family and friends, and the rich cultural identity that Mexican cuisine represents. Tortillas, quesadillas, salsa and tacos are just some of Mexico’s culinary exports yet they don’t begin to represent the robust flavours and infinite possibilities of Mexican cooking. Traditional ingredients – including chillies, beans, avocados, pumpkin, corn, cocoa

and vanilla beans – have fused with 500 years of Spanish influence to create food that is flavoursome, fresh and easy to prepare. I’m proud to share some of my favourite recipes from the book and from my childhood. Tamales are steamed parcels with a savoury or sweet filling, the pozole is a hearty soup of corn, pork, garlic and mild chillies, while Shepherds’ tacos are the Mexican equivalent of a shawarma kebab, and make for great street food. ¡buen provecho!

SHEPHERDS’ TAcOS serves 6

Brought to Mexico by Lebanese immigrants in the 1930s and adapted by local taqueros, who used pork instead of lamb 5 guajillo chillies, membranes and seeds removed ♦ 5tbsp apple cider vinegar ♦ 3 cloves garlic, peeled ♦ pinch of ground cumin ♦ 2 cloves ♦ 2tbsp pineapple juice (optional), plus extra for serving ♦ 500g pork leg or rump, thinly sliced ♦ 2-3tbsp corn oil ♦ 1 large onion, thinly sliced ♦ sea salt To serve: 12 small corn tortillas ♦ ½ pineapple, peeled, quartered, cored and sliced ♦ 1 small onion, finely chopped ♦ 4tbsp finely chopped coriander ♦ salsa of choice

Step 1 Put the chillies into a saucepan, add the vinegar and simmer for 15min until the chillies are soft. Add the garlic, cumin and cloves, then transfer the mixture to a food processor or blender and process to a paste. Add more vinegar, if necessary, and pineapple juice, if using, and strain. Step 2 Transfer the paste to a saucepan and cook over low heat for 10min, stirring constantly to prevent it from sticking. Remove from the heat and let cool. Step 3 Spread a thin layer of chilli paste over the meat slices. Stack them on a plate, cover with cling film and let them marinate in the refrigerator for 5 hours or overnight. Step 4 Heat the oil in a frying pan or skillet. Add the pork slices and cook for 2min, turn them over and cook for an additional 2min, until partially cooked. Remove from the pan, cut into bite-sized pieces and

JALIScO-STyLE RED POzOLE serves 6

Pozole is a dish that has remained almost untouched since pre-Hispanic times. It is used to celebrate very traditional Mexican festivities. You can find pig’s heads and legs at any good nose-to-tail butcher 6 ancho chillies, seeded ♦ 2tsp oregano ♦ 1kg hominy (dried corn which has been soaked in an alkaline bath) ♦ 1 head garlic ♦ 1 small white onion ♦ 10 bay leaves ♦ 500g loin or pork leg ♦ 500g pig’s head ♦ 2 pig legs, quartered ♦ sea salt To serve: 12 lemons, quartered ♦ oregano ♦ piquin chilli, to taste ♦ 1 white onion, finely chopped ♦ ½ lettuce, finely shredded ♦ 12 sliced radishes

Step 1 In a small bowl, combine the chillies and enough hot water to cover them and soak for 15min. Put them with their soaking liquid into a food processor or blender, add 1tsp oregano and process until smooth. Strain, pour into a frying pan or skillet and cook over medium heat for 15min, then remove from the heat and set aside. Step 2 Put the garlic, onion, bay leaves, remaining oregano, salt to taste and water into a large saucepan and cook over a low-medium heat for 30min. Meanwhile, put the loin, head and legs in a large saucepan, add enough water to cover, and bring to a boil over medium heat. Boil for 45min or until soft. Step 3 Remove the meat and shred it. Cut the meat from the head into bitesized cubes and set aside. Add the hominy (you can buy it from Amazon) to the garlic and onion stock and cook for 30min, until the corn is fully soft. Step 4 Add the chilli paste and check the seasoning. Ladle the soup into bowls, dividing the meat generously between each bowl. Serve with lemon, oregano, chopped piquin chilli, onion, lettuce and radishes.

FISH TAMALES serves 6

Tamales are a traditional part of every important occasion in Mexico and are very versatile. return to the pan. Add the onion and cook for another 3min. Transfer the meat to a serving plate. Step 5 Put the tortillas, one at a time, into the pan and cook for 20-30 seconds on both sides. Remove from the pan and drain on paper towels. Divide the pork among the tortillas, add the pineapple slices, onion and coriander, and top with salsa. Serve immediately.

10 guajillo chillies, dry-roasted ♦ 20-25 corn husks (outer leaves of corn on the cob) ♦ 5 tomatoes, chopped ♦ ½ onion, coarsely chopped ♦ 3 cloves garlic ♦ 1tbsp coriander leaves ♦ 500g white fish fillets ♦ 150g lard or vegetable shortening ♦ 500g masa harina corn flour ♦ 1½tsp salt ♦ 120ml fish stock (optional) ♦ Sea salt to taste Step 1 Put chillies in a small bowl, cover them in hot water and soak for 15min. Soak the corn husks in hot water for 15min then drain.

Step 2 Put the chillies, their

soaking liquid, tomatoes, onion, garlic and coriander leaves into a food blender and process until thoroughly ground then pass through a strainer or sieve. Season to taste. Step 3 Transfer the mixture to a saucepan and cook for 10min or until thickened. Remove the pan from the heat and let cool. Step 4 Rinse the fish and pat dry then cut into small cubes and put into a bowl. Add the cooled sauce and mix gently. Store in the fridge until required. Step 5 Beat the lard until fluffy and creamy, add the masa harina corn flour in four batches, add the salt and enough of the

fish stock to make a smooth, soft dough. Test by dropping a small piece into a glass of water – it is ready when it floats. Spread out the corn husks. Spread 1 heaped tbsp of dough on the broad side of every leaf, add 1tbsp of the fish mixture, then fold up. Stand the tamales vertically in a steamer and cook for an hour or until the tamale separates easily from the husk. Remove the steamer from the heat and let the tamales rest for 20min before serving. Bodie’s eye is as good as his palate, and you can expect enticing, seasonal fare, presented so prettily it’s almost a shame to eat it. Metro Life had a sneak preview last week and can attest that the team has gone all out with presentation – special mention must be given to the pork plate starter, which looks like a piece of modern art, and there’s one course sure to appeal to everyone’s inner kid: the miniature fairground cart dessert, with mini ice-cream cones, candy floss and soft dark chocolate bites. www.dylan.ie

Don’t forget that Hong Kong isn’t just a city – it’s also an island in the South China Sea and, away from the sweaty, dusty, frenetic pace of Downtown, there’s a tropical paradise to explore. ‘The territory has so much to offer beyond shopping and dining,’ says Canadian expat Hong Kong blogger Big White Guy (www. bigwhiteguy.com). ‘But many people never get out of the city. They don’t realise that 70 per cent of the region is hilly and reserved as country parks. Some of the best sights are found along rural trails, with spectacular views from the summits, hidden waterfalls, abandoned villages, wartime ruins and more. g n i l l e v Tra Irish travellers are going to South East Asia in great numbers as the relatively cheap cost and the contrast in culture has captured many hearts. It is truly a beautiful part of the world but nevertheless your journey can be so very easily ruined by taking health risks.

In most of the major cities the water supply is well chlorinated and so the risks associated with drinking mains tap water are limited. However, many of the bedrooms will not be supplied with mains water so take care. For most travellers to Asia there will be no need to take malarial prophylaxis as the cities are deemed to be free of malaria. However this does not mean that you will not be bitten by mosquitoes and you may develop a very severe reaction to the mosquito bite so it is prudent to avoid being bitten whenever possible. TMB insect repellents are available from Tesco, Dunnes Stores and Lloyds Pharmacies.

There are no compulsory vaccines for entry into South East Asia from Ireland. Nevertheless the usual recommended vaccines include Tetanus and Hepatitis A, Polio and Typhoid, cover. For those trekking or staying for longer periods then cover against Hepatitis B and Rabies would be worth discussing. Most travellers should start their vaccines 6-8 weeks before heading on their travels.

For the vast majority of Irish travellers a holiday in Thailand will be a time of great pleasure and, later, fond memories of the people, their customs and the countryside. Just remember that illness can occur so follow some good common sense rules and so you can enjoy yourself and travel in health.

South AfricA will put ulster scrumhalf ruan Pienaar through his paces in training this week before making a decision on his availability for Saturday’s test with ireland and the remainder of their northern hemisphere tour. Pienaar is working his way back from a medial ligament injury picked up against New Zealand in Wellington in September and will test the knee in training over the next few days. Springbok doctor craig roberts told reporters yesterday that Pienaar would struggle to make the Dublin match, and that if he was a doubt for the match with England at twickenham a week later, the team would consider calling up a replacement for him. ‘the biggest decision we have to make this week is around ruan Pienaar,’ roberts told reporters. ‘We have assessed him and we’re relatively happy with where he is, but we are going to have to see when he is running on the field in training. ‘At this stage it does not look like he will be available for this weekend, but we are hoping to have him ready for England. if he is not going to be ready for that then we may need to look at a replacement for the tour.’ Pienaar, who is the only doubt, has played his club rugby at ulster since 2010 and his experience in European conditions is seen as useful for the World cup in England next year. With first-choice scrumhalf fourie du Preez also missing through injury, the Boks will almost certainly start with francois hougaard at scrumhalf on Saturday should Pienaar be ruled out, with the inexperienced cobus reinach on the bench. South Africa play four tests in their northern hemisphere tour on consecutive Saturdays. After ireland and England they take on italy (November 22) and Wales (November 29).

Rugby world bids farewell to boks hero

RIP: Springbok Tinus Linee (right) tackles Ireland’s Anthony Foley in 1996

Former South Africa and Western Province centre Tinus Linee has died after losing his battle with motor neurone disease (mND) , it has been confirmed. Linee, 45, played 112 matches for Western Province between 1992 and 2001 and made his Springbok debut in 1993 at age 23, going on to feature in nine tour matches in Australia, Wales, Scotland and Ireland without

ever playing a Test. Former Boks scrumhalf Joost van der Westhuizen, now confined to a wheelchair because of incurable mND, tweeted his condolences. ‘Sad day for rugby in SA. Just received news of the passing of a rugby legend and mND Warrior Tinus Linee. rIP my friend,’ he said. Linee, who was diagnosed last year, is survived by his wife Diana, her two sons and a daughter from his first marriage.

ahead of Boks battle Ireland team manager Michael Kearney has admitted it is ‘difficult to say’ whether rory Best will face South africa after picking up a calf problem. Head coach Joe Schmidt will be desperate for Ulster hooker Best to be fit for Saturday’s Springboks clash in dublin given Ireland’s raft of front-row injuries.

by DAnny HOgAn

Ireland must face the big-scrummaging Springboks without props Cian Healy, Marty Moore and nathan White, while tighthead Mike ross is still fighting for fitness after groin trouble. ‘rory Best has a tight calf that will be monitored all week,’ said Kearney. ‘He will go through modified work today (Monday) and will be monitored as the week goes on. ‘It’s probably a little bit more difficult to say with rory, but he will do modified work and be monitored closely.

‘Mike ross went through some running and multi-directional work as well as static team work on Friday, and will be introduced to full training over the next few days. ‘He will be closely monitored but the prognosis is positive and we are reasonably confident he will be available for selection.’ Johnny Sexton is expected to train fully all week despite suffering ‘tightness in his thigh’, with Kearney confirming racing Metro agreed to limit his French Top 14 action to 40 minutes at the weekend. Gordon d’arcy, rob Kearney and Jack McGrath are all expected back in full training this week, while Stuart Olding and Tommy Bowe have come successfully through concussion protocols and will be available too. ‘We don’t have a concern over Johnny, he will be expected to play a full part in the sessions over the week,’ said Kearney. ‘It had been pre-arranged that he would come off at the weekend, he

was always going to play a limited part in the racing game.’ Meanwhile, British and Irish lions scrum-half Conor Murray urged centres robbie Henshaw and Jared Payne not to become ‘bogged down’ by following Brian O’driscoll into Ireland’s no.13 shirt. Kiwi boss Schmidt has confirmed Connacht’s Henshaw and Ulster’s

‘We don’t have a concern over Johnny’ Payne will battle it out to replace the now-retired legend O’driscoll at outside centre. Team manager Kearney said there had been no IrFU talk of retiring the 13 shirt in a USa sport-style gesture of respect to O’driscoll. Munster half-back Murray then backed Henshaw and Payne to relish the challenge of putting their own stamp on the Ireland back-line O’driscoll so dominated for 15 years.

‘There’s been much talk of it, we had all that chat last year throughout the whole season, the long farewell,’ said Murray. ‘We’re pretty much used to that now and there are opportunities for lads to fill into that famous jersey. ‘There will be pressure on them, but they’re going to have to be their own men, and not be too bogged down by the title of that jersey. ‘It’s something the public will talk about but within our squad we know the players we’ve got and what we’re trying to do. ‘So we’re not going to dwell on that too much. ‘I think they see it as an opportunity, they are two really good players and they bring a lot of different things to the table. ‘They will be hugely influential if they do get a chance in there. ‘They are going well in training, swapping in and out, so it’s up to Joe who he gives the shirt to, but whoever gets it, I’m sure they’ll do a great job.’

Attwood’s delivery could leave Lancaster rattled

Expecting: Attwood

England’s second-row resources for saturday’s autumn opener against new Zealand at Twickenham could be further depleted with the loss of dave attwood. Only hours after Joe launchbury was ruled out of the entire autumn series with a neck problem, head coach stuart lancaster revealed attwood’s fiance Bridget is expecting their first child. attwood is due to start alongside Courtney lawes as England seek to end a fourmatch losing streak against the

all Blacks but lancaster has been forced to draw up an alternative plan, with george Kruis and graham Kitchener on standby. ‘There might be a scenario

‘We’ll have to have a plan B in place’ but we’ll have to wait and see nearer the time. We’ll have to have a plan B,’ lancaster said. ‘Obviously you want to be sensible about these things.

You want to put the family first but equally I know dave’s keen to play as well. ‘We’ll just have to wait and see how Mother nature takes her course.’ lancaster can at least take comfort from attwood’s fine form for Bath. ‘He has changed his game this season. He’s lost a bit of weight and that’s improved his foot speed’ said lancaster. ‘He will bring a physicality to our game – not that Joe didn’t, but he will add to that because of his power.’

Away win the lads: Gomez celebrates his strike with two-goal hero Fletcher

Reds set for Rodgers: We won’t fold again to Madrid by RicHARD HOOkHAM

april 1 2002

DEFIANT boss Brendan Rodgers insists Liverpool will be no lambs to the slaughter in the Bernabeu tonight. There are fears the Reds could take another Champions League hiding from Real Madrid as they come into the clash on the back of some indifferent domestic form, including Saturday’s 1-0 defeat at Newcastle. Real also dished out a humbling lesson at Anfield two weeks ago, racing into a 3-0 half-time lead before easing off, and the fear is they could run amok on home turf. But Rodgers stressed there would be no conceding the game, even though the reality remains their Group B future will be decided by the final two matches against Basle and Bulgarian minnows Ludogorets. ‘We are certainly not coming here as a team expected to lose and then look at the other games as games to qualify,’ Rodgers said.

‘We see this game as a big opportunity’

pREMiER LEAguE

‘We see it as an opportunity. It is a wonderful arena – one of the iconic football grounds in the world – and, when you come up against the best opponents, that is the challenge and makes you perform to your best. ‘We see them as an opportunity rather than a threat to what we are doing. Our defence have come under quite a bit of criticism. It is nowhere near as bad as people make out. ‘You are looking to control and dominate the game, but we have to eradicate the errors.’ Rodgers added: ‘We showed in the previous game, although it was 3-0, we can still have moments when we can hurt Madrid.’

crystal palace ............ 1 sunderland ................3 by James Boylan Aanholt cross. Sunderland goalkeeper Costel Pantilimon did not have a save to make in the first half. That statistic was partly thanks to referee Phil Dowd, who waved away strong Fraizer Campbell and Wilfried Zaha penalty appeals. Van Aanholt was stretchered off clutching his shoulder after his dubious challenge penalty-box tackle on Zaha to be replaced by Wes Brown. The former England man netted a comical own goal in the 55th minute, volleying a neat Campbell back-heel into his own net after an initial Marouane Chamakh effort from a Zaha cross saved by Pantilimon. Against the run oif play Jordi Gomez put Sunderland ahead from the edge of area with 11 minutes remaining. Mile Jedinak was sent off late on for a second yellow card after kicking out Gomez. And the visitors took advantage of the extra man, hitting Palace on the break to coolly despatched Liam Bridcutt’s through-ball past Speroni.

Berahino admits he would welcome the opportunity should manager roy Hodgson select him. ‘I am enjoying my football,’ he said. ‘If the [england] call does come then it is great for everybody at the club. It would mean the world to me.’ Meanwhile, Tottenham’s Nacer Chadli has urged Hodgson to consider another young english striker – team-mate Harry Kane. Kane’s free-kick winner at Aston Villa on Sunday was his seventh goal in his last seven games and Chadli said: ‘He has a lot of quality and he can have impact in the game.’
