Man shown CCTV of wife buying baby test

A MOTHER who claimed a pharmacy allowed her husband to watch CCTV footage of her buying a pregnancy testing kit has settled a damages claim for an undisclosed sum. The woman, who cannot be named by order of the judge, said her marriage had been highly dysfunctional and difficult for a number of years before the October 2010 incident which had worsened her relationship with her now deceased husband. She told her barrister, Martina O’Neill, she had bought the pregnancy test for a friend, but her husband found the receipt in their home and had gone to the pharmacy with it. The court heard the husband was very possessive and displayed abusive and violent behaviour towards his wife. When he arrived at the Co Wicklow pharmacy he pretended to be very

distressed and had ‘tricked’ one of the employees into showing him CCTV coverage of the actual purchase. The husband told the pharmacy employee he had found the receipt in his teenage daughter’s bedroom waste bin and was seriously concerned that she was sexually active. When asked by Shane English, counsel for the pharmacy, if her husband could have played ‘a low trick’ on the employee, the woman said she could see him playing such a role as he would have been very good at it. The woman had sued for €38,000 in damages in the Circuit Civil Court. Following a brief adjournment to allow talks outside the court between the parties, Ms O’Neill said the matter had been resolved.

Star rushed to safety in security scare as fans break down barrier JENNIFER LAWRENCE was rushed to safety after fans tried to get close to the Hunger Games star. The actress, 24, was mobbed by fans outside the of the Late Show With David Letterman studios in New York on Wednesday night. ‘Sex gave men better sense of direction’ MEN are better at map-reading than women because it helped them to sow their wild oats, a new US study suggests. Scientists reckon our randy fore-fathers wanted to breed with different women to spread their genes further afield, to reduce inbreeding or simply because their culture allowed it. As a result, they developed better navigational skills. Academics at the University of Utah have come with the theory after studying the traditions of the Twe and Tjimba tribes in Namibia, southern Africa The tribesmen there regularly roam across 200km of terrain a year to couple with women from other regions. Men who did better in mapreading tests set by anthropologists had not only travelled further – they also had children with more women, according to the study published in the journal Evolution and Human Behaviour. ‘Navigation ability facilitates travelling longer distances... and the farther you travel, the more likely you are to encounter new mating opportunities,’ said researcher Layne Vashro ‘It looks like men who travel more also have children from more women – what you would expect if mating was the pay-off for travel,’ he added. Speaking about the two tribes, Prof Elizabeth Cashdan said: ‘They have a lot of affairs with people they’re not married to, and this is accepted in the culture. Many men have children by women other than their wives.’

grand plan to get viewers drunk March season of the penguins GRAND Designs host Kevin McCloud made an episode of the architecture show ‘deliberately designed to get people as drunk as possible’ after discovering its fans had invented a drinking game based on it. The long-running Channel 4 show follows families designing and building their dream homes and the rules of the game mean viewers have a drink when regular occurrences happen on screen, including the owners running out of money or quitting their job to manage the project. McCloud said: ‘We even actually wrote an entire programme around the drinking and it’s covert so one of the programmes is deliberately designed to get people as drunk as possible. ‘There are all kinds of rules like

every time I used the word “bespoke” it’s a double shot, the wife gets pregnant half way through, that’s a treble.’ Other rules include having a drink if the owners ignore planning permission or their windows end up not fitting. McCloud, who has been presenting the show for more than 15 years, was awarded an MBE last year. He set up his own lighting design firm and appeared on BBC makeover show Home Front before launching Grand Designs, which he writes and presents. It has led to a spin-off magazine, books and a live show. He is currently filming a new show for Channel 4 about people who have chosen to live in isolation from the modern world.

Admission of killing ‘just a joke’

A former journalist who claims he was framed for the unsolved murder of a filmmaker in Cork has claimed there is a french connection to the killing. Ian Bailey (pictured), who moved to Cork 23 years ago, is suing the State after being arrested twice over the killing of Sophie Toscan du Plantier. The 39-year-old was found beaten to death outside her holiday home on a remote hillside on December 23, 1996. ‘I became aware as an investigative journalist, that I was receiving information from a french journalist that it seemed to me that you follow this back to france,’ mr Bailey. He revealed he invited two gardaí to his home to discuss this along with Yvonne Ungerer, who saw the victim the day before she was found. ‘We did tell them, and I believe to this day, that there was a french connection,’ he said. ‘It was a long time

ago, so I can’t remember exactly but I can tell you this, it was very, very strange. It was weird.’ mr Bailey denied writing part of a story for the Sunday Tribune where it commented on ms Toscan du Plantier’s husband Daniel for not coming to Ireland after the killing. He went on to claim the victim had been in a ‘cat fight’with her husband’s mistress in a bar in Paris days before her murder. The court heard mr Bailey was arrested for the first time ten days after a news editor with the now defunct Sunday Tribune, Helen Callanan, contacted detectives over an admission he made during a phone call. ‘The DPP looked at it and said it was the antithesis of an admission and that it was an example of my black humour,’ he said. The hearing continues.

Sinn FÉin has accused the speaker of the Dáil of acting as a ‘shield’ to government scrutiny after staging a sit-in that shut the chamber down. Deputy leader Mary Lou McDonald (below) sparked the demonstration after refusing to leave over a row about questions not being answered. After the protest, which forced the closure of the Dáil until Tuesday, Ms McDonald said the Ceann Comhairle Sean Barrett was ‘aiding’ government leaders. ‘They are there to run the house, to oversee the debates, with no favouritism and no political agenda, and we expect that the Ceann Comhairle would do that,’ she said. Ms McDonald was asking Tánaiste Joan Burton if social welfare payments would be deducted for those who did not pay the controversial water charges. When she refused to take her seat, the speaker ruled her out of order.

Fury as Fifa clears itself of all corruption charges by AiDAn RADnEDgE A FRESH Fifa farce broke out yesterday with football’s world governing body clearing itself of corruption – only to be accused of lying by the investigator they hired. Sepp Blatter’s organisation declared the Russia and Qatar World Cups above-board with losers England branded the worst rule-breakers. The controversial 2018 and 2022 World Cups are now set to go ahead as planned despite concerns about their suitability, and how the two host nations won the tournaments. But Mr Blatter’s hopes of achieving ‘closure’ were dashed as investigator Michael Garcia accused Fifa of misrepresenting his findings and launched an appeal. England’s FA expressed fury yester-

He criticised the English bid for lavishing favourable treatment on disgraced former Fifa powerbroker Jack Warner, including a lucrative friendly match in Trinidad and a €50,000 gala dinner. And he rejected as ‘unreliable’ two female whistleblowers – one from Qatar, the other from Australia – who alleged that Fifa votes for 2022 were bought. Mr Garcia himself disowned the Eckert summary, accusing Fifa of misrepresent-

ing his findings – and launching an appeal to the governing body’s appeals committee. The FA hit back, saying: ‘We do not accept any criticism regarding the integrity of England’s bid or any of the individuals involved.’ Former England captain Gary Lineker said: ‘The FA being slammed for its ethics by Fifa is like being chastised by Gordon Ramsay for bad language after uttering the word “bloody”.’ The 2022 World Cup was awarded to Qatar despite worries about the tiny Middle Eastern state’s treatment of migrant workers including stadium labourers, more than 1,200 of whom have died. The intense heat in Qatar during the summer also means the tournament is likely to be switched to the winter instead.

he’s cracked America but ellie Goulding has a new goal in her sights – to appear in Game Of Thrones. The singer admitted she was a huge fan of the hBO fantasy drama. ‘I could talk about this for such a long time,’ she said. ‘I would be there if they asked me,’ she said, reaching out to show bosses for a part. ‘I would be right there.’ And she might be barking up the right tree as the show often features a music star guest in each series, with Coldplay’s Will Champion and snow Patrol’s Gary Lightbody both previously appearing. On why she loves the show so much, 27year-old Goulding enthused: ‘It’s such a brilliant story line. The casting is perfect. They are so good at casting. It’s the most

important thing. ‘You can have the best script but not the right casting. It’s perfect.’ Meanwhile, the hitmaker also revealed she was back in the studio with Calvin harris. ‘We do write really well together,’ she said. ‘It helps if you are friends because you feel really comfortable. ‘I’m really excited. Sarah-Jane Crawford has Simon Cowell quaking and tells fans not to focus on contestants’ pasts. We are halfway through the live shows and having the judges move d r Crawfo up into my studio Xtr Factor is for Xtra working really well, as it makes it easier to control Simon! And I can tell him off for making bad decisions as he is closer to me – so he is a bit more scared of me now. The remaining eight stars are all going on The X Factor Live Arena tour next year – and like Mel B, I would like to see Paul Akister added. But I don’t know if that’ll happen. He told me on WhatsApp he’s started writing already. I’ll present BBC Radio 1 and 1Xtra with his material and they‘ll have a listen. When I think someone is good I have to help. People might be critical that some in the final eight have had a past. Fleur East has performed with artists like DJ Fresh and Jay James had a record deal, while Lauren Platt auditioned for EastEnders – but even Leona Lewis released demos before The X Factor. It doesn’t matter, as long as they are good. I tried out for a girl band about ten years ago. I can hold a tune but I don’t need to audition for Simon! I prefer presenting now… but maybe I’ll surprise him one day. Helpful: Crawford Picture: getty

Those covered would have been released from prison, had they already been convicted, under the 1998 accord which ended IrA and loyalist violence. The revelation follows remarks by

former justice minister and attorney general michael mcDowell that an effective amnesty from prosecution was in place in the republic at the time. mr Ahern wrote in December 1999: ‘The named persons are very strong supporters of the agreement and with full freedom of movement will be able to play an even more effective role in persuading and leading those who might otherwise be sceptical towards an unqualified embrace of democratic politics and of exclusively peaceful means of promoting progress towards political objectives.’

mISSIoN CoNTroL has a problem after the first probe ever landed on a comet ended up in the shade. The future of the €1.25billion rosetta mission hangs in the balance after the Philae lander came to rest next to a cliff on the comet surface, rendering its solar panels useless. one of its three feet is sticking in the air, and scientists are now furiously calculating what experiments they have time to complete before its batteries run out tomorrow. But the first pictures have already been sent back to mission control in Germany, and eight of the ten scientific instruments on board have started working. ‘It was very exciting when the first image came through because it proved we were alive which wasn’t trivial,’ said lander scientist Jean-Pierre Bibring.

by DOMINIC YEATMAN ‘We are in the shadow of a cliff and that is part of the problem, but a lot of science is getting covered now.’ The fridge-sized lander weighs 100kg on earth, but less than a gramme on the 2.5mile-wide comet, and is only held on by its own tiny weight after its harpoons failed to fire on impact. It emerged yesterday that it bounced half-a-mile back into space after touching down on Wednesday, and could be several hundred yards from its planned landing spot. The mission is designed to discover whether comets contain the building blocks of life – but controllers fear a key experiment to drill 21cm under the surface could push the untethered probe back into space.

Young tiger on the Friday another prowl – but it’s no washout but Disney fairytale weekend better A young tiger is on the loose near Disneyland Paris. The town of Montevrain sent a news alert saying the young tiger was spotted behind a football pitch about five-and-a-half miles from the popular theme park. Authorities said in a statement that police and rescue squads are on the scene and had roped off a security perimeter. They urged everyone nearby to avoid the area. EuroDisney, the operator of Disneyland Paris, said it has no tigers in the theme park.

DUBLIN is bracing itself for another soaking after heavy rain swept through the capital yesterday. Last night Met Éireann warned its orange alert, its second most serious category for rainfall, would remain in effect until at least 9am, and said after clearing up more heavy rain would come from the south later this evening. ‘We’re advising road users to expect localised flooding in many parts of the country,’ said forecaster Gerry Murphy, adding the weather would improve over the weekend.

A ‘ruthless’ Sinn Féin stunt and a plea to ‘lay off’ Bono...

T

hat was a nice little stunt Sinn Féin pulled yesterday in Dáil Éireann with Mary Lou’s sit-in. What an effective way to deflect attention from the Mairia Cahill storm by making a lot of noise from a different place about water (something that is bound to appeal to the fears and prejudices of the common man). Sinn Féin are now the most cunning, ruthless and devious (sorry, Bertie) because they have managed to top opinion polls with not only the dirt of sectarian violence on their bib but also now sexual abuse. I believe the expression is ‘teflon-coated’. I for one, however, will never support them until they come clean about their past and drop adams (who should be more of a political liability than he has emerged to be during all this). Perhaps only we are to blame... Clancy Clearview ■ Don’t know what all that Sky Sports fuss was about. Why were people offended by the nationality breakdown? We’ve been

I just want to say that responses to this story in the comments sections of these sites were disgusting. to wish that Bono had died in such an accident or that he had been seriously injured is beyond messed-up. anyone whose begrudging resentment of a celebrity manifests itself as a wish to see them hurt or dead should be ashamed of themselves and seek help. the venom spat out at Bono – never at U2, just Bono – in this country is tiresome and weird. Irish society has much bigger enemies facing us than a rock star in a band who pay a portion of their publishing taxes abroad. collaborated with his family; Domnhall cast him and his father as idiotic policemen in the short film Noreen. A new production of Enda Walsh’s The Walworth Farce marks the first time all three have acted together. ‘This will be a new experience for all of us,’ says Gleeson. ‘We’re all different actors – Domnhall and I even look different – so we all bring something to the table.’ The story is about a father and two sons holed up in a tiny flat in London. ‘I play the youngest son, who wants to learn the truth about why their dad brought them to London. Domnhall’s character is more set in his ways. I think they’re both great actors. I’m excited about working with my family.’ Rehearsals start in early December, when Domnhall finishes making The Revenant with Leonardo DiCaprio and Tom Hardy in Canada. ‘I met

Domnhall [earlier this year] for a bite to eat in London when he was doing Star Wars,’ says his brother. ‘He’s sworn to secrecy about Star Wars. I was trying to dig for information.’ Gleeson has only been in the business a few years, but he has experienced projects large and small. Tiger Raid was budgeted at half a million. Snow White And The Huntsman, in which he played a dwarf opposite Kirsten Stewart, cost $170m. Could Gleeson handle the level of attention that Domnhall now faces? ‘Look, everyone wants recognition, but fame is different. Star Wars is movie history, so it’s all good.’ The actor wants to keep plugging away at his craft. At the moment, he is working on Stonemouth, a BBC adaptation of an Iain Banks novel. History’s Future, a film with Irish actor Mark O’Halloran, is out next year. ‘As long as I’m working, I’ll be happy. It’s a tough old game,’ he says. The world of film and theatre might not need another Gleeson, but it would be much poorer without Brian. Standby is in cinemas today. The Walworth Farce runs at the Olympia Theatre, Jan 10 to Feb 8, 2015

Cumberbatch is perfect for this role. Mathematically gifted yet socially challenged, his turing is a likeable, gently comic figure, unwittingly insulting everyone from his colleagues to his bosses (nowadays they’d say he was ‘on the spectrum’). Much mirth is made from his social ineptitude and his habit of taking everything literally, something that visibly frustrates his cavalier colleague Hugh (Matthew Goode). Also well

cast is Keira Knightley, who is in her element as Joan, a crossword whizz who surprises the gents by responding to a newspaper ad. Given the propriety of the times, she must lodge separately to avoid scandalous gossip. Her late-night code-breaking scenes with Cumberbatch are a highlight, as are those in which she tries to school him in social etiquette. Less effective are the episodes in the 1950s, when turing was arrested for ‘gross indecency with a male’ (he was given a posthumous royal pardon last year). this plays it relatively safe on the subject of his sexuality, shying away from details and leaving questions unanswered. It may be aiming at the polite, middlebrow market but it’s a good bet to clean up at this year’s Oscars come February. Anna smith

Business&Careers Mortgage rules unfair, bank claims

NEW mortgage lending criteria will force first-time buyers out of the housing market, Ulster Bank’s chief executive has warned. It follows steps by the Central Bank to limit the amount financial institutions can pledge to intending buyers. Speaking at the Joint Committee on Finance, Public Expenditure and Reform, Jim Brown acknowledged the need to guard against ‘overheating’ in the financial sector. However, he said incoming rules would result in many being unable to buy a home, adding: ‘Hopeful first-time buyers would struggle to save a higher deposit while paying increasing rents.’ He told the Oireachtas committee an estimated 68 per cent of Ulster Bank first-time buyer customers would not qualify for a mortgage under the proposed loan-to-income criteria. From January, measures proposed by the independent regulator will require banks to restrict lending above 80 per cent of the value of a home. They will also limit lending to below 3.5 times a borrower’s income. Prospective buyers will have to have a 20 per cent deposit when applying for a loan, something experts believe could

exclude many from getting on the property ladder. Earlier this week, governor of the Central Bank Patrick Honohan indicated that the ‘20 per cent rule’ could be eased through mortgage insurance. However, he defended the restrictions, telling delegates at a National Management Forum on Saturday: ‘We will not shirk our responsibility to do what is in our power to deliver on our mandate to protect the new generation establishing households.’ Ross Maguire of New Beginning – a free legal service for mortgage holders – said the measures should not punish first-time buyers but agreed that a restriction was necessary. ‘I think the 20 per cent figure is at the high end but is not unreasonable in comparison to other nations. But there has to be some restrictions,’ he told Metro Herald. He said the Central Bank was in a difficult situation to stop another housing bubble whilst coming under increasing political pressure. Meanwhile, AIB chief David Duffy revealed the bank has turned a €437million pre-tax profit so far this year.

Munch bunch: Screenshots from Planet Munchie, a new game aimed at tackling childhood obesity

Healthy eating app whets appetites Creator Mick Rochford tells us about his new Irish mobile game app, Planet Munchie, which is hoping to combat obesity amongst children Planet Munchie was developed to encourage children to become more active and healthy. The game uses the phone’s motion sensors to record movement and rewards players with virtual currency to use in a fun virtual world called Planet Munchie. The game was developed to help combat the global epidemic of childhood obesity and is aimed at boys and girls between four and nine. Planet Munchie even rewards activities a child does outside the game such as football or swimming. My first involvement in gaming was in 2012 with a company called Affinity Technology Group. I was delighted to be project manager of this start-up and it gave me a huge insight into what making a game was all about. We produced three games: Joe Vs Banker, a recession-themed platform game; Santa Sprint; and Santa Vs Banker, for which we signed a global distribution agreement with BigFish Games from America. Even though that game has since been played more than a million times, we only got paid on converted players who went on to purchase the full game outright.

I pitched the game to the Enterprise Ireland-backed New Frontiers programme and was accepted on to an intensive six-month programme to start developing the game. We began testing in schools in October and now we have 50 schools lined up to demonstrate the benefits of Planet Munchie. The reaction has just been phenomenal and

Quick deal: Kearney’s deal is part of a new strategy on IRFU contracts picture: inpho

Sign when you’re winging: Ulster wing Bowe has signed a new deal with the IRFU picture: inpho

TOMMY BOWE has signed a new three-year deal to keep him at Ulster until June 2018. The 30-year-old wing has signed a joint contract with the Irish Rugby Football Union (IRFU), just two days after in-demand full-back Rob Kearney committed his long-term future to Leinster and some months after it was confirmed Johnny Sexton would be returning to Leinster next summer after two years in France. Kearney and now Bowe completing new deals without fuss further boosts boss Joe Schmidt’s preparations for Rugby World Cup 2015. ‘I am delighted to have signed a new contract with the IRFU and Ulster,’ said Bowe, who has won 55 caps. ‘It is an exciting time for both the province and the national team and I hope to play a part in achieving success on both fronts in the years to come.’ Performance director David Nucifora has exerted pivotal influence over the IRFU’s new policy of fuss-free contract negotiations with a new approach to keeping top stars in the Irish system. ‘We are delighted that Tommy has committed his future to Ulster and Ireland for the next three years,’ said Nucifora. ‘Tommy has proven his value to Irish rugby over the years with stand-out performances for both Ulster and Ireland.’ Ulster underwent widespread offfield changes in the summer, with coaches David Humphreys and Mark Anscombe both departing Ravenhill. British and Irish Lions wing Bowe committing to a long-term deal proves a welcome endorsement for head coach Neil Doak, with Les Kiss poised to become Ulster’s full-time rugby director after the World Cup. ‘It is a great boost to the province that Tommy has signed a new IRFU contract which keeps him at Ulster,’ said Ulster CEO Shane Logan.

However, the Spaniard bounced back brilliantly in Antalya to lead Ian Poulter by a shot. ‘It’s nice making a low score, it’s been a while,’ said Jimenez, who holed out from 96m for an eagle on the tenth. ‘It’s special because I’ve been struggling a little bit the last few months and [when] you shoot under par, you feel good. KEARnEy A nEw ERA Of quicK-signing Rugby HOMEbiRDs

Rob KeaRney took just 40 minutes to negotiate the new Ireland contract he signed this week, writes Nick Purewal. The simplicity of the statement must not diminish its importance: where once new contract talks in Ireland assumed an unhealthy element of espionage, now there appears clarity and vision. Top stars and rugby bosses alike had traded bluff and counter-bluff in protracted discussions beset by rancour and recrimination in a testing last two years. Johnny Sexton’s strained Racing Metro experience has eased the battle for the Irish Rugby Football Union (IRFU), but only in part. and rather than seize the emotional currency of his misadventure, Irish bosses instead moved to plug a vital gap. Celebrated head coach Joe Schmidt’s tactical mastery cannot extend to all corners of the union, so in parachuted David nucifora. The former Wallabies hooker’s title of performance director does little to explain a now crucial part of his remit. Instrumental in ushering through Sexton’s return next summer, nucifora now fills the void between coaching staff and board executives. In essence, part of his role now mirrors a director at provincial level. In-demand full-back Kearney’s new three-year deal only serves to underscore further the need to bridge politics and player power. ‘I can only speak on my behalf, but the process has changed hugely,’ said Kearney. ‘It was done very quickly over two meetings lasting about 15 or 20 minutes each. The whole process from start to finish took ten days or two weeks. I think if that can happen for all the players throughout the country it can only benefit both the provinces and the national team.’ The union’s battle to retain the hottest talents naturally collides with agents and players seeking a market value skewed by cash-rich French aristocrats. Sexton decamped to Paris last summer after seemingly washing his hands of the whole process, with the IRFU ‘disappointed’ and forced to admit it could not compete with the French mega bucks. Jamie Heaslip and Sean o’brien both endured months of talks last season, the two stalwarts only persuaded out of moves to France at the 11th hour. Sexton’s cautionary tale of Parisian unrest caught those seeking similar bumper paydays cold though, and thus far no top Ireland star has followed suit. The 29-year-old fly-half, nominated for the IRb player of the year award this week, has not tried to hide his struggles to settle at Racing Metro. at first glance the harsh reality of his situation seemed the ideal bargaining chip for the IRFU. However, Irish bosses installed nucifora with a renewed determination to combat the lure of France. Tommy bowe quickly followed Kearney’s lead in signing a new three-year deal this week, so the union will next turn attention to Leinster prop Mike Ross and Munster captain Peter o’Mahony. If this week is any indicator, signing them may be hassle-free.

big match battles: ireland v Scotland David Meyler v Scott brown Scotland captain Brown has endured a tough start to the new Scottish Premiership campaign as Ronny Deila has struggled to get the best out of Celtic – and the midfielder was sent off in his most recent outing against Aberdeen. His Hull City midfield counterpart has struggled for game-time this season but has been a key part of Ireland’s campaign so far, having started each game – including their battling draw away in Germany.

Aiden Mcgeady v Steven Whittaker The experienced Norwich defender will have the crowd on his side as he looks to control the threat of the Everton winger. McGeady can expect boos after opting to play for the Republic of Ireland rather than his country of birth, Scotland – but he has impressed for Roberto Martinez’s side this season and has shone for his country, scoring the two goals that earned victory in Georgia.

Steven Fletcher v John O’Shea

Fletcher has netted four goals so far in this campaign for the Black Cats but has failed to score in any of his country’s qualifying matches, despite

showing signs he is returning to his best form. Sunderland teammate O’Shea has been at the heart of a shaky defence that was humiliated last month

by an 8-0 defeat to Southampton, but the defender did score the vital equaliser in his country’s draw against the world champions in that same week.

‘It’s like a Champions League game’ Scott Brown will be bursting with pride and emotion as he leads out Scotland tonight. Around 60,000 fans, most of them tartan Army, will congregate in the east end of Glasgow as Gordon Strachan’s side look to draw level on points with the visitors as they continue their quest to reach the France finals in 2016. Speaking at Mar Hall, the Scots’ base on the outskirts of Glasgow, the 29-year-old celtic skipper revealed just how much the national team’s armband means to him. ‘It’s the proudest moment of your career to be perfectly honest,’ he said. ‘to captain your country and to walk out to hear the national anthem being sung by 60,000 tartan Army fans means a lot. ‘It’s emotional to hear everyone up singing their heart out and knowing it’s for you to go out on that park and try to win it. It’s going to be like a champions League night and hopefully it’s going to be entertaining.

Proud moment: Scott Brown

‘the crowd gets you through the hard times. when you are defending and you think you’re not going to get out, the crowd just spurs you on that little bit. ‘the tartan Army have been doing that for years and they are always behind us, home and away.’ Despite his vast experience, Brown admits pre-match nerves still play a part on ‘great occasions’. ‘Yeah, that’s what makes it exciting,’ said the former Hibernian midfielder. ‘when you go out there you feel the hairs standing up on the back of your neck. no matter where we are, the tartan Army will follow us. ‘Both teams want to play football and it will be a great game to watch. It would be nice if we could come out on top. ‘we’re all looking forward to it in that dressing room. that is what all the lads have been speaking about. we can’t wait,’ he added.

Keane to conquer Paradise

Robbie Keane will return to Celtic Park hoping the familiar surroundings will help him fire the Republic of ireland to a priceless euro 2016 victory over Scotland. The 34-year-old ireland skipper scored 16 times in 19 appearances for Celtic during a loan spell from Tottenham in 2010, and is hoping his touch in Glasgow has not deserted him on his return tonight. asked if it was a help returning to a stadium he knows so well, Keane said: ‘in the past, it has helped me, so i am hoping if i get the opportunity tomorrow that that will be the case as well.

‘These are the games players want to play in’ ‘You certainly don’t go into games thinking that, but in the past, i have been very, very lucky that i have scored a few on certain grounds i have been at before, so i am certainly hoping that would be the case tomorrow if i get the opportunity.’ Keane is not alone in the irish squad in knowing Celtic Park well – manager Martin o’neill was in charge there for five hugely-successful seasons, while winger aiden McGeady cut his teeth with the bhoys. However, the striker is not convinced that is necessarily an advantage: ‘i don’t know, it’s clearly the same for both teams. There are a lot of players who have played here on numerous occasions, and obviously

the Scottish players have, so i am not too sure to be honest with you. i think it’s fairly equal for both teams. ‘one thing i can say, i know there are players who haven’t played here before and it’s about keeping players’ feet firmly on ground and not get too excited. ‘We know exactly what we have to do and the job we have to do, and certainly everybody is looking forward to it. These are the games that players want to be involved in. We haven’t had a competitive game like this against a rival for a while, so it’s certainly exciting.’ The much-travelled Keane admits his brief spell in Glasgow was a high point of his career and he retains fond memories of it. ‘Coming from London and getting off that plane and coming to Celtic Park and there were 5,000 people here was one of the best feelings you could ever get as a player, and just walking out at Celtic Park and putting on that jersey... ‘From start to finish for me, the experience was great and i enjoyed every minute of it.’ He enjoyed too getting to know combative midfielder Scott brown, who will line up in the Scotland engine room tonight. Keane said: ‘When i was here, he was brilliant. He wears his heart on his sleeve. He gives everything he has for Celtic and his country, and that’s clear to see when you see him playing.’

Focused: Aiden McGeady says the off-field furore this week hasn’t bothered him in the slightest picture: inpho

Friday, November 14, 2014 METRO HERALD 23

Ice-man Aiden ready to fight by SAM cOSTELLO Republic of iReland winger aiden McGeady has insisted he will not be swayed by the furore surrounding his return to celtic park. The paisley-born 28-year-old and fellow native Scot James Mccarthy have been warned to expect a hostile reaction from some sections of the home crowd when they run out for ireland against Scotland in tonight’s euro 2016 qualifier against Scotland in Glasgow.

‘For me it’s just another game’ but McGeady, who spent his formative years as a player at celtic, is adamant he will take whatever comes his way in his stride. He told fai TV: ‘if you just break it down and think about it, it’s just another game of football, isn’t it? That’s kind of the way i look at it. ‘i know obviously you’ve got all the other things, the other side of it, the people coming out in the press and stuff and saying their bit on myself and James getting booed or whatever. it’s part and parcel of football, it’s going to happen. ‘all i have to do is just go into the game and try to play the way i can and help the team to try to get a

positive result. like i said, at the end of the day, it’s another game of football. ‘To be honest, i have just tried to distance myself from that and not get too caught up in that and just treat it like it’s another game.’ That said, McGeady is relishing the prospect of playing once again at a stadium in which he took his first steps as a professional footballer. The everton man said: ‘celtic park is where i grew up playing. i played the majority of my career there, so it’s a place i have obviously got a big emotional bond with. i loved playing there, so hopefully it can carry on on friday. ‘it’s going to be good going back and playing for ireland against Scotland. it should be a great atmosphere, i think. ‘When i was at Spartak [Moscow], we played celtic in the champions league, so i kind of know what it’s like to be on the away team at celtic park. ‘it will be different because obviously it’s going to be a Scottish home game and the majority of the crowd are going to be Scottish because there are not that many tickets going for the away section, but i think it will be a really good atmosphere.’

Houghton: knows pressure

houghton: Jeers will just inspire McGeady GlasGow-born republic of Ireland hero ray Houghton has warned that scottish jeers for aiden McGeady could inspire the former Celtic winger against the land of his birth. Houghton helped Ireland to a crucial 1-0 European Championship qualifying victory over scotland at Hampden in 1987 after being overlooked by his native land. The former liverpool midfielder admitted it was strange playing against scotland but he was driven on by the jeers from the terraces that he used to frequent as a boy watching the national team and Celtic. The win, courtesy of a Mark lawrenson goal, sent the Irish well on their way to the 1988 European Championship finals and helped launch a golden era for Irish football. Houghton, who later netted famous winners against England and Italy at major finals, was not put off his stride by the type of reception Paisley-born McGeady is likely to face tonight with the focus now all on him after his Everton team-mate James McCarthy pulled out with a hamstring injury.

Hostile crowd: Gordon Strachan

Celtic Park is ‘home turf’ says Strachan GORdOn STRachan has reminded the Republic of Ireland they will be entering Scotland ‘territory’ tonight. With hampden Park still out of commission due to its use in the commonwealth Games, the Scots played their first Group d game against Georgia at Ibrox, with Parkhead hosting the Irish match and next Tuesday night’s friendly with England. Much has been made of Irish boss Martin O’neill being a former hoops manager with his assistant Roy Keane, skipper Robbie Keane, aiden McGeady, Shay Given, daryl Murphy having

‘You’re entering Scottish territory’ played for the club and anthony Stokes currently a striker with the Scottish champions. There has also been much speculation as to how many travelling fans over and above the 3,200 or so official supporters will be among the crowd, which is edging towards its 60,000 capacity. however, Strachan, a former celtic manager himself, said: ‘I thought the Scottish fans turned Ibrox into the home of Scotland for the day and we will do that tomorrow. ‘We will turn celtic Park into the home of Scottish football and you will know fine well you are in Scotland tomorrow night. ‘We are quite familiar with celtic Park as well (as some of the Irish), most of our players have played there. But as I say, it is not going to be celtic Park, tomorrow it is Scotland’s park. ‘There will be 50,000 plus Scotland fans in there. That is Scotland’s territory and they are coming into Scotland’s territory,’ he added.

A man alone: Roy Keane finds himself the centre of attention for the wrong reasons again

Martin O’neill is refusing to allow the latest episode in the roy Keane saga to distract him from his mission to guide the republic of ireland to the finals of euro 2016. the two men touched down in Glasgow ahead of tonight’s showdown with Group D rivals Scotland at Celtic Park after a tumultuous 24 hours with the assistant manager at the centre of it. Questions on the alleged incident which prompted Keane to ask for Gardaí to be called to the team hotel in Portmarnock were understandably to the fore as O’neill and skipper robbie Keane spoke to the press yesterday evening, but the message from the manager was unequivocal. He said: ‘it’s only a distraction, that’s all it was. i made a statement earlier on today and there’s not really much more i can talk about. But i think we are fine, i think the players are fine, i think the man in question is fine too and we are ready to go.’ Quizzed further about his number two, O’neill replied: ‘He’s okay – he’s actually here with us now, so if we could end the press conference right now it would be great because you will catch him.’ the manager was briefly nonplussed when asked if the former ireland captain had addressed the squad on the matter, and moved swiftly on. He said: ‘Why would he do that? no, no, he spoke to me. i don’t think robbie as captain was particularly interested in hearing what had happened at that time – i don’t

think so, anyway. ‘listen, the incident is over and i think that’s it. You mentioned it being a distraction, and that’s really it.’ if events in Dublin had dominated the pre-match agenda outside the republic camp, there is little danger of it doing so as the countdown to an eagerly-anticipated qualifier nears its conclusion. O’neill was more concerned about the loss of central midfielders Glenn Whelan and one of the men fuelling the other major talking point this week, James McCarthy, to injury. Darron Gibson and Jeff Hendrick are seemingly the main candidates to plug the sizeable gap left in the heart of O’neill’s team, although he has also handed a key role to Stephen Quinn in the recent past. But whichever 11 men eventually run out ahead of kick-off, they will

‘The incident is over, it was just a distraction’ be sent on their way by a manager determined to emerge with a positive result at a stadium where he did that more often than not during his five years as Celtic boss. O’neill’s side claimed three league titles, three Scottish Cups and one league Cup, as well as reaching the UeFa Cup final, during his tenure to establish himself firmly in the affections of the locals. However, he is determine to send those same fans home this time wearing frowns. O’neill said: ‘i must admit, it will be really strange to walk into the club and walk right to the away dressing room rather than left.’
