Kenny fumes over ‘kidnapping’ of burton in protest
TAOISEACH Enda Kenny has hit out at the treatment meted out to Tánaiste Joan Burton on Saturday, saying it ‘amounted almost to a kidnapping’, and condemned the protest actions as ‘beyond the democratic norm’. He said it was ‘absolutely disgraceful’ that she was trapped in her car in Tallaght while anti-water charge protesters banged on the windows. He also criticised the actions of Anti-Austerity Alliance TD Paul Murphy – who he claimed played a role in Saturday’s Jobstown protest – calling him ‘immature’. He accused Mr Murphy of urging people to behave in a ‘nondemocratic fashion’, adding if the situation was reversed and gardaí were to detain the newlyelected TD in his car for two hours, ‘he would have a very different story to tell’. Mr Kenny said ‘sinister agendas’ had taken over the water protests. However, Mr Murphy defended the protest in Jobstown, saying it ‘had

been peaceful’. Public tension remains high and Mr Kenny was met with scuffles at an event in Sligo last night, and Finance Minister Michael Noonan was targeted by protesters as they gathered outside a hotel in Limerick earlier. This came hours after Environment Minister Alan Kelly’s constituency office was evacuated after a bomb threat was called in. Meanwhile, An Garda is advising anyone who has a complaint about Garda conduct to report it to the Garda Ombudsman. A spokesman said he could not comment on an incident in which a female protester appears to have been roughly pushed away by a garda from the Taoiseach’s car at an event on Sunday towards a bollard. The Government is to reveal its charging plan tomorrow, amid reports bills will be put back to after Christmas.

Good cop: TV favourite Idris Elba as Luther
‘Luther was a great Elba in dark days’
Never mind the ‘b******s,’ it’s Geldof on Sky BOB GELDOF let rip with swear words on live TV as Band Aid stormed back into the charts yesterday. The veteran rocker brought a Sky News interview to an abrupt halt after Jayne Secker challenged his line-up. ‘If they all paid their taxes in the right way, we wouldn’t need these fundraising singles – what would you say to that?’ the interviewer asked. Geldof, 63, replied: ‘I think they are all talking bollocks.’ ‘That’s pretty colourful language,’ she told him – before suggesting Band Aid 30 (which raised €1.2million in five minutes) was ‘trite’ and would raise a ‘comparative pittance’. ‘Complete load of bollocks,’ replied a smiling Geldof, before his microphone was cut.
by JENNI MCKNIGHT IDRIS ELBA credits his role as Luther for exorcising his demons. The 42-year-old said that playing the tortured detective in the BBC drama was like therapy after a string of movie flops. ‘Luther reinvented me, massively. It came after a string of movies like The Losers and Obsessed and whatnot,’ he said. ‘I put my heart and soul into it. I love John Luther. I played John at a very dark time in my life. And I so love John because I get to exorcise; it’s so cathartic, it’s therapy.’ Elba added: ‘He’s got so much going on, but he lives with it. He makes decisions and he does things that Idris Elba is not allowed to do.’ The English actor is desperately trying to make a Luther film happen. But fans of the show don’t have to wait too long to see Elba reprise the role. He is working on bringing the detective back to the small screen in what is likely to be a one-off special. ‘There’s a story idea but no script yet. But we’re going to do it at the end of this year. There’s a lot of pressure from everyone to make it, so we’re gonna do it,’ he said.
Bean set for Frankenstein crime drama A CRIME drama which re-works Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein is to be filmed in the North. Game of Thrones actor Sean Bean will star as Inspector John Marlott in The Frankenstein Chronicles, a six-part series commissioned by ITV. The production has been created by Emmy-nominated director and writer Benjamin Ross and is set in 1827. Filming begins in January. Mr Ross said: ‘Marlott’s investigation takes him into the dark corners of Regency London. He discovers an underworld of prostitution, drug smuggling, bodysnatching and murder for profit.’ Based on the tale of a scientist who creates a grotesque creature, it will combine a detective drama with a horror thriller.
Hero: Elba has also costarred in Marvel blockbuster, Thor

SMEs turn to Employers can help staff to get healthier social media for advice MORE than a quarter of small and medium enterprises (SMEs) are reaching out to social media for business advice and support, a survey has shown. Of that number, 59 per cent admit that they now look to social media like Facebook, Twitter and LinkedIn first, as opposed to traditional means, such as meetings with their accountant or lawyer. The figures were taken from the Close Brothers Business Barometer. Managing director of Close Brothers Commercial Finance Harry Parkinson said: ‘Our research suggests the evolution of social media has had a significant impact on how SMEs seek advice.’
TWO-THIRDS of Irish employees want to get healthier, and believe their employers can assist in helping them do so. Some 66 per cent of people who answered a poll by the Nutrition and Health Foundation admitted they need to consume healthier food. But just 15 per cent said their employers provide healthy food choices in canteens or vending machines.
The research found only one-third of employees take the recommended weekly amount of exercise and four in ten office workers said they are not physically active at all during their working day. One-fifth of those inactive workers cited a lack of facilities as a cause and 11 per cent highlighted a lack of showers in their workplace. Danny McCoy, CEO of the Irish

He said that irish Central Bank data is ‘distorted’ and irish mortgage-holders are ‘not paying a fair price’ compared to current eurozone market levels. ‘The Central Bank says the rate for new mortgages is 3.47 per cent but it is clear irish banks are charging closer to 4.5 per cent,’ he said. ‘Mortgage lenders across the eurozone have reduced their rates to an average of 2.6 per cent. yet in ireland, banks have gone in a different direction by charging excessive standard variable rates,’ he said.
Nephew of O’Hara pays damages A NEPHEw of Hollywood screen legend Maureen O’Hara has apologised and paid undisclosed damages to her former personal assistant over allegations about the handling of her financial affairs. Carolyn Murphy, who developed a 30-year friendship with the actress during her time living in Ireland, sued for defamation over emails sent by Charlie Fitzsimons. The High Court in Dublin has been told the action has been settled. Ms Murphy said she was still extremely upset by the allegations, the exact nature or detail of which has not been revealed.

IRELAND’S youth consider themselves among Europe’s poorest, according to new research. In a European study carried out by credit management company Intrum Justitia, 41 per cent of 15-24-yearolds from Ireland admitted they were struggling to make ends meet and said they do not have enough money for a dignified existence. Only more youngsters in Estonia (44 per cent) reported not having sufficient control of their finances. In a wider poll, when asked to what extent certain issues contributed to money problems in the country, 69 per cent blamed the loss of employment; 53 per cent said mortgage repayments, while 49 per cent indicated energy costs as a factor. Due to the lack of financial certainty 21 per cent of Irish respondents said they were considering leaving the country. In total, 35 per cent of European households were noted as saying that a lack of money had resulted in them not being able to pay a bill. At the same time, as many as one in four families’ funds are completely exhausted after all bills have been paid. People living in Greece and Portugal are reportedly broke the most often.
Meanwhile, separate research from Focus Ireland suggests that rising rents and stagnating rent supplements are pushing young people towards homelessness. Entitled Young People, Homelessness and Housing Exclusion, the report outlines that 45 families, including more than 100 children, were made homeless and living without permanent accommodation last month. Factors causing many young people to lose their homes are family break-
‘21% were considering leaving the country’ down, leaving State care, early school leaving and lack of access to employment and affordable housing, the charity said. It added in a statement: ‘The main reason many are becoming homeless is that rent supplement payments have not kept pace with rising rents and people are being forced into homelessness.’ Recommendations by the report to alleviate youth homelessness include: A State-funded parent and child mediation service and a full aftercare programme for young adults who are leaving Government care.
Train bosses’ WiFi proposals leave users all railed up IRISH RAIL has been criticised over new plans to ‘monetise’ its WiFi service at a time when many customers are complaining about the quality of the service. Mark Gleeson of Rail Users Ireland said the company must first make sure its WiFi works properly and is reliable before it starts talking about commercialising it.
Irish Rail is seeking feedback from interested parties for an appropriate business model for a monetised WiFi system but it does not intend to charge customers for the existing service. Mr Gleeson said that while the market consultation is progressive and a step in the right direction, the first thing Irish Rail ‘must provide is that when you are
logged on to the system, any delays to your service are updated automatically which is something that is not happening at present’. An Irish Rail spokesman said: ‘We will continue to provide free WiFi to our customers. We provide over 26million WiFi sessions annually and we want to go to the market to find out what revenue opportunities may exist.’

Facial hair’s for movember – and not for life IT’S the month of Movember – and despite many taking on the task of growing a cookie duster, women still prefer to lock lips with a shaven man. In a report by Gillette, six out of ten women claim to prefer their men’s upper lip to be smooth. Forty per cent of those surveyed said they would be more inclined to kiss a clean-shaven hunk. Meanwhile, just one in ten noted their preference for the feel of a few bristles. But all is not lost for gentlemen cultivating some lip lawn. According to the report, if guys want to keep in with the ladies then all they have to do is keep their tache well-groomed. Some 25 per cent of Irish women think a moustache can make a man more attractive but only if it’s trimmed good and proper. Perhaps unsurprisingly, Tom Selleck’s facial hair is considered to be the best celebrity moustache of all time.

All change says new leader A bridge too far for tourist
ROMANIA: New president Klaus Iohannis said yesterday his surprise victory signals ‘a deep change’ in the country. The ethnic German, who pledged to tackle corruption, said: ‘I will change the way politics is done in Romania.’ His rival, prime minister Victor Ponta, conceded defeat on Sunday.

Police charged the 23-year-old, from La Rochelle, France, with reckless endangerment and criminal trespass.
Killer elephant’s terror trek Ebola surgeon dies on ward
THAILAND: An elephant trampled its handler to death before bolting with tourists clinging to its back. The animal attacked the 60-year-old as he led a Russian woman and her daughter, nine, on a trek near a waterfall in Phang Nga. Rescuers tracked the animal for two miles and had to tranquillise it to rescue the pair.
AMERICA: A surgeon who contracted ebola while working in Sierra Leone died yesterday in hospital. Dr Martin Salia, a native of the African country, was receiving treatment at the Omaha hospital in Nebraska. The 44-year-old had ‘extremely advanced’ symptoms when he was admitted on Saturday, the hospital said.

US tourist pair flee Thailand after ‘trying to post body parts’ by THANYARAT DOKSONE TWO American tourists have fled Thailand after stealing body parts – among them a baby’s head – from a hospital, police announced yesterday. Filmmaker Ryen McPherson, 31, and a 33-year-old man are thought to have travelled to Cambodia after trying to post three parcels containing the human remains at the weekend. They were questioned by police but freed after claiming they bought the five body parts, which also included a baby’s foot and an adult heart, at a market to give to friends as a joke. But authorities later received information indicating the remains were stolen from Bangkok’s Siriraj Hospital, deputy national police chief Ruangsak Jaritake said. ‘We are still looking for clearer evidence,’ he added. He showed reporters graphic images of the parts, including two sheets of tattooed adult skin – one bearing a jumping tiger and the other an ancient

They are believed to have been stolen from the hospital’s medical museum – nicknamed the museum of death – which exhibits preserved human remains, many from murder victims. The body parts – preserved in formaldehyde and wrapped in packages labelled as children’s toys – were discovered by DHL staff during a routine X-ray check. They were bound for Las Vegas, with one said to be destined for Mr McPherson’s home.

Hunt for European killers in Islamic State video
11
We’ll keep legacy of slaughtered son alive PETER KASSIG’S parents yesterday said they were heartbroken after the murder of their son by Islamic State. Ed and Paula Kassig said the American aid worker, 26, ‘lost his life as a result of his love for the Syrian people and his desire to ease their suffering. We will work every day to keep his legacy alive as best we can’. The Kassigs said their hearts also went out to ‘the families of the Syrians who lost their lives, along with our son.’ They also grieve ‘for the families of the other captives who did not make it home safely’. The White House confirmed the death of Mr Kassig after IS released a video showing he had been beheaded on Sunday. President Barack Obama called it ‘an act of pure evil’. Mr Kassig, a former US Army Ranger, had appeared in the video that showed the beheading of British aid worker Alan Henning in October.
Is it him? (l-r) Nasser Muthana as a schoolboy, just before leaving Britain, in a video from June and the man in the latest IS beheading video THE hunt has been stepped up for ‘Jihadi John’ and other Europeans suspected of carrying out the latest slaughter by Islamic State. Fears that two British citizens may have taken part in the latest beheading video came as UK prime minister David Cameron called a meeting of the emergency Cobra committee yesterday. US aid worker Peter Kassig’s severed head was shown in the video along with a parade of militants and their victims. The narrator and lead executioner was the Londonaccented man known as ‘Jihadi John’, who was reportedly joined by former student Nasser Muthana,
by AIDAn RADnEDgE 20, from Cardiff. Last night, his father Ahmed Muthana revised his earlier opinion that one of the killers looked like his son. ‘That is not my son, the nose is different, it does not look like my son,’ he said. Mr Muthana had said his son should be executed if proved to have taken part in the latest killings. ‘If that’s what he has done to someone then that is what should be done to him,’ he told reporters. Meanwhile, there was a ‘strong presumption’ that French national Maxime Hauchard, 23, was one of the other killers in Sunday’s video. A former friend

said: ‘It’s not the Maxime we knew. He got on with everyone. He drank alcohol, and liked to party, but was never any trouble to his parents. He was just an ordinary French lad from a Catholic family.’ Another Frenchman is also believed to be among the militants. Interior minister Bernard Cazeneuve urged French citizens, especially the young, ‘to open your eyes to the terrible reality’ of IS. The latest murder follows the killings of US journalists James Foley and Steven Sotloff and British aid workers David Haines and Alan Henning. ‘Jihadi John’ also warns of slaughter in Britain and the US.

‘Bomb manual’ student guilty in secret terror trial
Device: Erol Incedal was convicted Picture: PA
A LAW student accused of plotting terrorist attacks in London has been found guilty in a secret trial of possessing a bomb-making manual. Erol Incedal, 26, was convicted last Tuesday but the details can only now be reported after the judge lifted restrictions. During the trial, the court heard claims Incedal was considering a Mumbai-style attack and had
plans to target former prime minister Tony Blair. The Old Bailey jury rejected his argument that he had a ‘reasonable excuse’ for having the document on how to make an explosive device. The court heard that Incedal, from south London, was arrested in his car near London Bridge in October last year. Police found a micro SD memory card containing the bomb-
Seven held in North on terror charges
Seven men have been remanded in custody in the north charged in connection with a series of dissident republican terrorist offences. The men, aged between 30 and 75, appeared in newry Magistrates’ Court in Co Down after being arrested last week by heavily armed police investigating the activities of the Continuity IRA. Four of the accused are from the Republic and three from the north. All have been charged with membership of a proscribed

Five of the men have also been charged with directing terrorism. Five other men detained in the swoop on the property in Ardcarn Park in newry were subsequently released pending police files being sent to prosecutors for assessment.
The five men facing a count of directing terrorism along with the four other charges are: Patrick Joseph Blair, 59, from villas Park, Dundalk; Liam James Hannaway, 44, from White Rise, Dunmurry; Joseph Matthew Lynch, 73, from Beechgrove Avenue, Limerick; Sean O’neill, 75, from Quinn’s Cottages, Limerick; and Colin Patrick Winters, 43, from Ardcarn Park, newry. He will face a retrial on that charge after jurors failed to reach a verdict. Co-defendant Mounir Rarmoul-Bouhadjar, 26, pleaded guilty before the trial started to having a bomb-making document.

The Middle Neil Flynn reveals a protective streak as Mike Heck
International Football Live Martin O’Neill hopes to bounce back against USA
The Leftovers Justin Theroux plays put-upon cop Kevin Garvey
Sky Atlantic, 9pm
There is going to be a second season of this baffling mystery drama so don’t expect too much in the way of clarity in tonight’s season finale. We still don’t know why (or how) so many folk suddenly disappeared from a small town in New York state but if the plot has you tied in knots, there’s always Justin Theroux, the town’s put-upon cop, as a distraction.
2. International Football Live: Ireland v USA
Setanta Ireland, 7pm Fresh from their miserable defeat against Scotland on Friday night (ouch, that still hurts), the Republic of Ireland return to the Aviva Stadium for this friendly fixture against the United States. Jürgen Klinsmann’s charges impressed at the World Cup in Brazil and currently sit at No.23 in Fifa’s world rankings – 38 places ahead of the Irish. Manager Martin O’Neill will be running the rule over the fringe players before the Euro 2016 qualifiers resume next March.
4 Imagine… German artist Anselm Kiefer’s studio proves size does matter
5 Elementary Lucy Liu puts the kick into sidekick with Kitty (Ophelia Lovibond)
3. The Middle
Comedy Central, 9pm
The second-best sitcom set in Indiana – nothing beats Parks and Recreation, after all – The Middle is an unsung gem of US comedy. And much of the joy is in the supporting characters, not least Sue Heck’s endearing knucklehead of a boyfriend Darrin (John Gammon), whose efforts to get fresh with his sweetheart bring out the protective dad in Mike. And you really don’t want to cross the guy who was the janitor in Scrubs.
4. Imagine…
BBC1, 11.05pm German artist Anselm Kiefer is a man who thinks big, the overarching theme of his monumental works is an attempt to confront the demons of Germany’s past. Set against a major retrospective of Kiefer’s career at London’s Royal Academy, Alan Yentob meets the man at work in his sprawling studio in France.
YOUR GUIDE TO THIS EVENING’S ESSENTIAL VIEWING 5. Elementary
Sky Living, 9pm It’s getting mighty crowded chez Sherlock Holmes now that his new protégé Kitty Winter (Mr Sloane’s Ophelia Lovibond) has joined the party. But Kitty has a lot to learn – not least that she’s got a long way to go before she can challenge Lucy Liu’s Watson in the sidekick stakes.
6. The Missing
BBC1, 9pm James Nesbitt is giving a masterclass in anguish in this cleverly constructed mystery, which strikes a fine balance between emotional tearjerker and sophisticated crime drama as it charts the fallout from the
disappearance of a family’s young son. Eight years on and the trail has run cold – colder than the grave – but French detective Julien (Tcheky Karyo) is certain the murder of a key witness holds a vital clue to the boy’s disappearance.
7. The Taste of Success RTÉ1, 8.30pm
The remaining 16 candidates from the regional heats in the food product competition battle to go through to the next round, with half of the hopefuls being sent home.
8. The Great Interior Design Challenge
BBC2, 7pm Decorating a bedroom with straight
walls is one thing but tackling the curvy interior of a Kentish coast house is the altogether trickier challenge facing the amateur designers in round two, with just three days and €1,250 to play with. It’s a shame this show doesn’t have a viewer vote – the choices of judges Sophie Robinson and Daniel Hopwood border on the bizarre.
9. The Flash
Sky1, 8pm Here’s a warning: tonight’s episode of this lively and refreshingly uncomplicated superhero adventure contains flashing images. Well, it is called The Flash. Our hero (Grant Gustin) gets the icy treatment from a diamond thief who gets his hands on
a deep-freeze gun, a slippery character by the name of Captain Cold. Yes, that is Prison Break’s Wentworth Miller.
10. Today’s Film: In A World… Sky Comedy, 6.20pm
It’s a man’s world in the booming universe of the Hollywood voice-over but one woman is determined to change all that – step forward Lake Bell, the writer, director and star of this offbeat 2013 comedy. She’s determined to make her voice heard amid the cacophony of machismo over-the-topness (including her own dad’s) and you’ll be cheering her on every step of the way.

he handy thing about history is that it keeps being made and, for the makers of Assassin’s Creed, that means the enviable task of cherry-picking a poignant period in time for each chapter. While last year’s Black Flag was a rather jolly (Roger) journey into the golden age of piracy, Unity is an altogether darker one set around the French Revolution – but that’s only half the story. Though much of Unity takes place during the radical decade of political upheaval at the turn of the 19th Century, the full storyline stretches from the 14th to the 20th Century, from the time of the Knights Templar to the Nazi occupation of France in World War II. That’s because new time anomalies give you a

The French capital has been faithfully recreated to a near-1:1 scale in this latest Assassin’s instalment that’s exclusive to next-gen consoles and the PC. It’s an impressive sight, even if parity between platforms means developer Ubisoft opted for 30 frames per second across both consoles rather than the full-hD 60fps you can get on the PS4. In other words, it’s not quite a resolution revolution. (Xbox 360 and PS3 owners got different games altogether with Assassin’s Creed Rogue, set during the Seven Years’ War.)

Pes 2015: Pro evolution soCCer XO/pS4/360/pS3/pC Pro Evo, or PES as it’s affectionately known, has been demoted to the subs bench in recent years, as EA’s FIFA held the top spot for most football fans. However, Konami’s rival soccer sim is vying for selection once again with its best offering in years. There’s a distinct difference between the two: FIFA’s drama and player detail against PES’s subtle footballing realism (such as the importance of home advantage). The same graphics engine from Metal Gear Solid V is
employed and, if proper kits are important to you, Konami can count on Manchester United, England, Scotland, Wales, La Liga, Serie A, Ligue 1 and Eredivisie, among others, for their officially licensed support while the likes of Arsenal remain regionally labelled as north London, etc. Picking between PES and FIFA is partly down to personal preference and partly which one your mates bought. To steal a footballing cliché, it’s just nice to have the selection dilemma. JD
and loots, bumping into historical figures such as Napoleon, King Louis XVI and the Marquis de Sade as you go. Parkour moves, stealth and combat have all been refined but the main change is that this is the first Creed to offer a multiplayer co-op mode for four assassins. Character customisation should ensure no two assassins appear the same – though their hoods may be similar – plus jumping between two- and four-player missions is as easy as un, deux, trois, quatre. We never fail to be impressed by the scale and sense of romance achieved in Assassin’s games. We just hope there’s enough history left for Ubisoft to call upon before resorting to a virtual Russell Brand rampaging through the streets of London. James Day

Food lovers,
go west
Australia’s west coast is a foodie heaven, as Caroline Eden found out on a whistle-stop tour
I
f there is a group of people who should be smugly happy with their lot, it’s probably the residents of Western Australia’s state capital, Perth. home to 19 white-sand beaches, 3,000 sunshine hours a year and a much-celebrated January fringe festival, Perth has got its groove on. And it’s the perfect base from which to embark on a trip around the state. the mining and petroleum has created fat wallets too. In and around Perth, truckers can earn €125k a year and average household incomes have risen 35 per cent in five years. fast wealth normally equals flashy restaurants but this is
Australia, where foodies come first, and chefs have been quick to cash in on the boom with their inventive bars and eateries. Case in point, local restaurateur Nic trimboli has just opened the new Bread In Common (breadincommon.com.au), a kitchen and bakery housed in a converted warehouse in trendy fremantle, where it is more about sharing plates than fine dining. there’s the Leederville food Safari’s rickshaw food, while new outfit foodie Adventures promises to help guests discover some of the best culinary experiences in the city. You can choose from an International food Adventure, an Asian Affair roving Dinner or a private tour. tickets cost from €28 per person (foodloosetours.com.au). With all that in my tummy, it’s time to hit the road for liquid refreshment in the Margaret river area, home to 200 or so vineyards. It has a Mediterranean climate and is home to the impending annual Margaret river Gourmet escape (Nov 21-23, gourmetescape.com.au), which draws the likes of heston Blumenthal (left) and rick Stein.
Savour Australia (clockwise from above): Perth’s skyline, Bridgefield guest hous house, local chocolate, Bread In Common My tour guide, Chad, and I cruise 210km south, our car dwarfed by giant belts of 260ft-tall karri trees. Just over four hours later, we stop for lunch at the Leeuwin estate winery (leeuwinestate.com.au). One of the five founding wineries of the area, its wines are among the finest in the southern hemisphere – with prices to match – but owners Denis and tricia horgan are still down-toearth enough to join us for lunch. We bag a couple of bottles of Cabernet Sauvignon and then move on to Gabriel Chocolate (gabriel chocolate.com.au), a 30-minute drive away in Yallingup. the first ‘bean to bar’ chocolate maker in Western Australia, Gabriel Myburgh is a self-taught roaring success.
the judges at the royal Melbourne fine food awards described his Madagascar dark milk confection as ‘a ripper’ and in Oz it doesn’t get much better than that. Gabriel leads us through the back rooms of his chocolate factory. the beans are selected by hand here with little going to waste – ‘sometimes, the shells go to the local Cheeky Monkey Brewery (cheekymonkeybrewery.com.au) for their chocolate stout,’ Gabriel says proudly. As I pop one chocolate after another into my mouth, it’s pretty clear that I’ve developed the Western Australia smug face too.

Henry’s migraine was ‘blood vessel blockage’ Same focus: Quade Cooper
Quade made up to have Kurtley come back into fold
A worry: Ulster and Ireland flanker Chris Henry by DAnny HOgAn
Quade Cooper believes australia must find a new ‘identity’ under Michael Cheika to move on from the Kurtley Beale saga. The Queensland reds fly-half said utility back Beale has been welcomed back into the Wallabies squad with open arms after his much-publicised absence. Beale’s clashes with di patston led to the Wallabies business manager quitting her post, before coach ewen McKenzie followed last month. New boss Cheika has drafted Beale back in following a hefty fine for sending patston a lewd text, and the 25-year-old could line up against Ireland in dublin on Saturday. Cooper admitted sympathy for McKenzie’s plight, but challenged the Wallabies to complete a bout of soul searching on their northern hemisphere tour. ‘From a team point of view he (Beale) offers a lot, everyone’s happy to have him here,’ said Cooper. ‘Cheiks speaks highly of him and

Rhys Ruddock claimed his first ireland try against the Springboks, stepping in for henry at the last minute two weeks ago. the Leinster flanker – son of former Wales international mike Ruddock – could now come back into contention to face Australia in dublin this Saturday.
ireland’s injury update bulletin also confirmed mike mccarthy suffered a concussion in Sunday’s 49-7 victory over Georgia in dublin, and the Leinster lock will now undergo the return to play protocols. centre Jared Payne tested out the progress on his foot sprain by running under observation yesterday afternoon

Rankings talk ‘a distraction’, says Schmidt
Rank indifference: Joe Schmidt
Joe Schmidt has branded ireland rising to third in the international Rugby Board rankings ‘a distraction’. the ireland head coach vowed his squad will not discuss overtaking england as the northern hemisphere’s highest-ranked nation. ireland sunk as low as ninth in the rankings when Schmidt was confirmed as the new boss in April 2013. the ex-Leinster boss did however admit the national side’s steady rise has been ‘fantastic’, following Sunday’s 49-7 win over Georgia.
‘i think it’s a distraction. i don’t think we can win anything by saying we’re third in the world,’ he said. ‘We just have to tidy up our scrum a bit, get our set-piece right and just try to get those practical things right. ‘i think it’s fantastic, and a feather in the cap of the lads who have rolled their sleeves up for the last 12 months, but i can’t say it’s something we’d be talking about or even aware of.’ ireland have lost just twice in Schmidt’s tenure, to Australia last autumn and at twickenham against
england en route to claiming the 2014 Six Nations crown. Rather than toast the global league tables, Schmidt preferred to pinpoint Australia’s ‘workaholic defence’ as ireland gear up to face the Wallabies on Saturday. he made 13 changes from the Springboks victory to face Georgia, and the majority can be expected to be return for this battle. ‘if you don’t shut the Wallabies down, they are very, very dangerous,’ said Schmidt. ‘i think they’ve got a workaholic defence.’
‘We know Ireland will be a tough encounter’ knows his ability as a player. None of us are here to play politicians, or politics, we’re all here with the same focus of improving as a rugby team, and improving as rugby players. ‘From a professional point of view we’re focusing on beating Ireland this week – we know it’s going to be a tough encounter. ‘This is an interesting tour, we had a good start against the Barbarians and a tough game against France, so we’re just aiming to improve.’ Cooper is back in the fold after a protracted absence, teaming up with Will Genia in the half-back cordon for the first time in a year against the Barbarians. Cooper said former Leinster coach Cheika is excited to be back on Irish soil, while at the same time demanding a new ‘mental edge’ from his Wallabies. ‘Mental preparation, each individual making sure we cover everything in the week, leaving nothing to chance. So when we get into tight situations, we won’t give opponents the opportunity to win the game.’

Kovac sorry after disorder in Milan
CRoaTIa coach Niko Kovac has apologised for the ugly scenes in the crowd that marred his side’s 1-1 draw with Italy on Sunday. Uefa is expected to charge Croatia following the disturbances at the Euro 2016 qualifier in Milan which was temporarily stopped in both halves by referee Bjorn Kuipers after visiting fans threw fireworks and smoke bombs onto the pitch. at one point, the players were taken off for ten minutes. ‘I apologise to everyone, especially the Italians, for our supporters’ behaviour,’ Kovac (pictured) said. ‘I was disappointed and helpless, there are no right words for this.’

‘Robbie is Jur only man,’ says Klinsmann... by sAM cOsTELLO United StateS manager Jurgen Klinsmann has held up Republic of ireland skipper Robbie Keane as a role model for the nation’s future professionals. the 34-year-old La Galaxy striker will be back on the other side of the atlantic preparing for Sunday’s MLS play-offs showdown with the Seattle Sounders when his international team-mates run out to face the americans in a friendly at the aviva Stadium this evening. However, Klinsmann admits he repeatedly uses Keane, who has scored 65 international goals in 138 senior appearances for ireland, as an example of what it takes to succeed as a player at the highest level. He said: ‘i often say that in the United States, Robbie Keane is a role model for all the american players growing up in this beautiful game. ‘that’s what he has done since he came overseas, he shows to the young players what it takes to become a professional, how much dedication you need, how much commitment you need. ‘Robbie is the same Robbie in training as in the game, so he is huge for MLS because these are the type of players that you need to have in your environment to make the league grow and to make younger players understand what the real big players are doing. ‘at the same time, he continues to play for ireland at the highest level, scoring goals, going back and forth, so i definitely use him a lot as an ex-

Capello facing axe RUSSIaN sports minister Vitaly Mutko has promised widespread changes after Fabio Capello’s team lost 1-0 to austria in Saturday’s Euro 2016 Group qualifier. ‘We need to deeply analyse and weigh up the complexity of the situation. I think this will happen within the next few days and we will announce the decisions we have come to,’ Mutko said. Russia play a friendly against Hungary tonight, which some believe could be Capello’s final match in charge.
ample how to do it. ‘He will leave a huge mark, hopefully a long time down the road, when he leaves the game, with what he has done for MLS over the years.’ Klinsmann’s team, who were only denied a quarter-final berth at last summer’s World Cup finals in Brazil by a heart-breaking extra-time defeat by Belgium, are currently on a mission to steepen the learning curve which has seen them emerge as an international force to be reckoned with. they lost 2-1 to Colombia at Craven Cottage in London on Friday evening, although Klinsmann makes no apologies for pitching his players into battle with such quality. He said: ‘What we are trying in our process is to realise how the best teams in the world play the game and how we can one day really compete with them and beat them, so what does it take to beat a Germany? What does it take to beat a Spain or a Brazil or argentina one day and go eye-to-eye with them? ‘they set the tone. the tone is set also coming out of the Champions League, the european Champions League sets the tone in terms of tactical changes you see in the game or how certain teams are put together by the best coaches... the trip to ireland has also brought back memories for Klinsmann, who scored his first goal for tottenham in a pre-season friendly against Shelbourne in dublin in 1994. He said: ‘Yes, i have memories about that. Obviously i was at Spurs a few times last week and saw my old team-mates. they are nice memories. i was surprised how many Spurs fans lived in ireland – i think there were 12,000 people and 11,000 were Spurs, so good memories.’

Roy Keane was involved in a row with journalists after being asked if he was becoming a distraction from the Republic of Ireland cause. Keane, Martin o’neill’s assistant, spoke to the media at the team hotel in Portmarnock on Sunday morning and initially played a straight bat to questions about an incident in which he was allegedly involved at the same venue in the run-up to Friday night’s euro 2016 qualifier against Scotland. But when asked about the publicity surrounding Celtic’s approach at the start of the season, his biography and
the hotel incident, Keane replied: ‘you think I’ve got to justify all that to you? and you all sit there and think I’ve got to answer everything. ‘Who the hell do you think you are? I’ve got to answer to you? I answer to the FaI (Football association of Ireland) and Martin, and if we don’t get the results, I’ll be gone and you won’t lose a minute’s sleep, so don’t worry about distractions. you are the ones who write about distractions.’ o’neill admitted in his pre-match press conference at Celtic Park the incident at the hotel, when the FaI
called gardaí at Keane’s request, had been a minor distraction. no arrest nor complaint was made, but when it was put to Keane people were talking about it, he replied: ‘Talking about what? Talking about something you don’t have a clue about. and everyone writing lies, the usual nonsense, “this happened” and “that happened”.’ Those exchanges came after Keane had taken everton boss Roberto Martinez to task over his handling of injuries to

O’Neill insists ‘terrific’ Keano is no distraction by sAM cOsTELLO
Martin O’neill has leapt to the defence of assistant roy Keane after the fall out from the hotel incident. the outspoken 43-year-old, who hit headlines last week after an alleged incident at the republic of ireland’s team hotel, took a scatter-gun approach with media on Sunday. Keane criticised everton for their handling of injuries to Seamus Coleman and James McCarthy, urged teenage aston Villa midfielder Jack Grealish to make up his mind over which country he wants to represent and rounded on reporters for suggesting he has become a distraction. the comments prompted a swift and withering response from everton chairman Bill Kenwright, who accused him of saying ‘some stupid things sometimes’. However, manager O’neill, who asked the younger man to join him in the ireland set-up following his appointment in november last year, insists he has no regrets about doing so
‘Let me tell you – I’m delighted to have him’ despite the attention Keane attracts with his pursuit by Celtic, his updated autobiography and the events of the last few days having dominated the agenda in recent months. the ex-northern ireland star said: ‘every single time that you mention roy, it either seems to be a distraction or another issue. let me tell you straight: i’m delighted to have him. ‘i chose in the first place to bring him in here, he’s been terrific... He has been terrific around the lads, he has been great. He has been everything that i wanted him to be. ‘all the distractions – some things have materialised that actually aren’t of his doing to begin with, so i haven’t a problem. ‘He’s got a mind of his own, he can say what he wants. again, unless it’s
bad publicity Seamus Coleman and James McCarthy. Keane said: ‘I worry that [McCarthy] is under lots of pressure, particularly from Everton’s point of view, because every time there is an international match it does seem to be Seamus and James under lots of pressure ... You always get the impression from Everton that Seamus and James are both barely able to walk, that type of thing. So when they actually turn up and they are walking through the reception, “Praise the Lord, it’s a miracle”.’ As a result, Keane wants Martinez and O’Neill to meet.
absolutely and utterly in contradiction with what i am saying to you, then i do not have a problem with it. it is not an issue all the time.’ O’neill’s defence was backed wholeheartedly by defender John O’Shea, a former Manchester United team-mate of Keane’s. O’Shea said: ‘as the manager says, it’s brilliant having him on board and i’d definitely echo those sentiments, without a doubt.’ O’Shea added: ‘Well obviously, along with the rest of Martin’s coaching team, roy’s experience playing at such a high level, just his passion for the job – all those factors combined are very helpful.’ Keane insisted the publicity surrounding him had not been a distraction in the build-up to the euro 2016 qualifier in Glasgow, which ireland lost 1-0, and O’Shea agreed. He said: ‘look it doesn’t bother us one bit, honestly. We don’t see it either way. it’s more yourselves that really enjoy those facts. We just have our jobs to do on the pitch. ‘Ultimately we train great, everything is prepared for us great and it’s up to us to do the job on the pitch.’ O’neill will hope the focus will now return to exactly that, with a muchchanged side due to face the United States at the aviva Stadium tonight in a friendly which will bring an end to the republic’s 2014 fixtures. Derby full-back Cyrus Christie and ipswich striker David McGoldrick will both be handed first caps, but there will be no place for 19-year-old Grealish as he continues to keep his options open with england on his trail. Keane’s frustration may be clear, but O’neill has been adamant from the start he would not involve himself in a lengthy courtship. He said: ‘i’ve spoken to Jack Grealish’s father, i spoke to him at the time a way back some time ago. i spoke to the two of them and Jack’s father and Jack were not in any great hurry at that particular time to make their minds up – fine, absolutely. i left it entirely up to them.’

‘You do say some stupid things, Roy’ eVertOn chairman Bill Kenwright has accused roy Keane of ‘saying stupid things’ following the republic of ireland assistant’s comments about toffees boss roberto Martinez. Keane took Martinez to task over his handling of injuries to key ireland players Seamus Coleman and James McCarthy, who both missed last
month’s euro 2016 qualifiers. Kenwright said: ‘i’m a big fan of roy Keane’s but he does say some stupid things. ‘that is just totally unfair, we absolutely love our players going on international duty and we never ever get in the way of them. roberto Martinez will be as shocked as everyone at everton.’
