don’t have a cow, man, try a gay bull

A ‘gAy’ bull has been saved from slaughter after the terminally ill cocreator of The Simpsons donated thousands towards his rescue. benjy, a Charolais in Co Mayo, was being fattened for the butcher after his farmer owner complained he was not sexually interested in cows. His plight came to the attention of animal activists – who said he was more interested in bulls – last week through a local newspaper report. Following a fundraising drive to save benjy, Sam Simon, the producer behind The Simpsons, Cheers and Taxi, stumped up the €6,250 needed to buy the bull. Mr Simon – who has terminal cancer – has vowed to use his €80million fortune for animal causes. ‘All animals have a dire destiny in the meat trade, but to kill this bull because he’s gay would’ve been a double tragedy,’

by briAn huttOn

he said. A life-long vegan, Mr Simon felt compelled to act and was thrilled that benjy’s fate was now ‘a sanctuary rather than a sandwich’. The bull will be transported to the Hillside Animal Sanctuary in the uK where he can ‘live out his natural life with peace and dignity’. More than 250 others also contrib contributed through a crowdfunding scheme set up by animal-protection group Aran and ThegayuK.com. John Carmody of Aran said there was a phenomenal response to their pleas. ‘The response from around the world has been so very encouraging, but to now hear that Sam Simon, co-creator of the world’s most popular animated sitcom, is stepping in is just icing on the already well-baked cake,’ Mr Carmody said.

Something about marry by SEAMUS DUFF

Rock and stroll: Diaz and Madden in Beaulieu, France

CAMERON DIAZ looks set for a dramatic U-turn on her marriage ban after pals claimed the bachelorette is engaged after a whirlwind romance. The sizzling 42-year-old Hollywood beauty did nothing to dispel the rumours when she stepped out flashing an engagement ring, signalling she and Good Charlotte rocker Benji Madden, 35, had gone up several gears. ‘The pair decided to take things to the next level and Madden popped the question with a diamond-encrusted ring,’ a source told Australia’s Daily Telegraph, adding that the pair have been engaged since last month. Madden had hinted in September that marriage sounded appealing, admitting: ‘It’s what every man wants, whether they admit it or not.’ But Diaz had previously warned off suitors, saying: ‘It just wasn’t the thing I was drawn to. I certainly didn’t want it in my 20s. Or my 30s,’ Spokesman for both parties refused to comment.

Future Mrs Cumberbatch plays the fame game her own way SOPHIE HUNTER may have been catapulted into the A-list following her engagement to Benedict Cumberbatch but she kept things low-key when she joined him on the red carpet in New York. The theatre director chose a demure floral dress rather than a plunging Hollywoodstyle gown for the premiere of The Imitation Game. And she seemed to be shy about

flashing her engagement ring, keeping it discreetly hidden behind Cumberbatch’s back as they posed for photos together. The 36-year-old’s engagement to the Sherlock actor prompted a flurry of disappointed tweets from his legion of female fans. But her husbandto-be has urged his followers not to be too downhearted. ‘Your ovaries do still have use, let me tell you,’ the 38year-old said during an appearance on US show Live! with Kelly and Michael.

Hayes calls for tracker ‘swap’ A DUBLIN MEP has proposed a ‘grand bargain’ whereby the European Central Bank would take Ireland’s tracker mortgages from the country’s banks onto its own balance sheets. Brian Hayes, a former minister of state at the Department of Finance, said the plan would involve ‘introducing fixed-rate mortgages at a fair price for homeowners and would help resolve the problem of tracker mortgages for Irish banks’. He said: ‘Europe owes Ireland for the action we took during the crash that saved the euro. ‘The ECB would be taking on a very low risk by taking tracker mortgages on to its balance sheet and of course it would have zero financing cost. ‘Removing tracker mortgages from the books of Irish banks would improve their profitability and free up capital for new lending to growing businesses creating new jobs.’

Walk the road: Transport Minister Paschal Donohoe (far right) with the chief executive of the BAM Group Theo Cullinane (centre) and Fred Barry of the NRA at the official opening

Highway to heaven for long-suffering drivers THIS stretch of road is empty now, but come tomorrow morning it will be teeming with traffic and providing relief to the hard-pressed commuters of west Dublin. The Newlands Cross flyover was officially opened by Minister for Transport Paschal Donohoe yesterday. The long-awaited road will provide light relief for motorists between the N7 Naas Road and the R113 Fonthill/Belgard Roads. Major road works since January have not helped the heavily congested area which sees more than 80,000 vehicles pass each day. The addition to south-west Dublin’s road system will be open to traffic tomorrow. Speaking at the opening, Mr

Donohoe said: ‘It’s an exciting development for regular commuters, for motorists, for hauliers and for anyone who remembers the frustrating delays and frequent tailbacks that used to occur here. ‘The opening is an important signal of our economic recovery and I hope it will significantly assist economic activity.’ Head of communications at the National Roads Authority, Sean O’Neill, told RTÉ’s Morning Ireland: ‘It’s going to be a major relief. In the early hours of Thursday the contractor is going to do a major traffic shift, which is taking everyone from the temporary road and travelling up and over Newlands Cross for their morning commute’.

Kenny offers new water concession THe Government will bring in legislation to prevent the privatisation of Irish Water, Taoiseach enda Kenny has said. Mr Kenny made the admission during a heated Leaders’ Questions that was dominated by Irish Water. Ruling out Sinn Féin calls for a referendum, the Government said it would ‘further strengthen legislation’ that protected the company as a public utility under the 2013 Water Act. The news comes on the back of a leak that outlined new concessions on water charges, concessions dismissed as ‘an attempt to buy time’ by the Right2Water campaign. Accusing the Government of ‘backpeddling so quickly… it was going to fall over itself’, the group said the plans to delay bills until after Christmas, cap payments, give homeown-

By DAviD KEARns ers a €100 rebate, and remove bonuses to Irish Water workers for 2013/14 were a ‘futile attempt to deflate the Right2Water campaign’. Speaking out against the violence that has marred recent protests, organiser Brendan Ogle warned that ‘anger protestors’ will not be welcome at the nationwide rally

Ryan Tubridy invited Kenny onto Late Late against water next month. ‘We want to send a very clear message – anger is not a strategy, anger is not a policy. What we have achieved to date – the biggest mass mobilisation of people in the State – is through

mass mobilisation of peaceful protest,’ he insisted, adding that the demonstration outside the Dáil on International Human Rights Day on December 1 will be a ‘family day’. Mr Ogle said that no matter what the Government proposed, the campaign to scrap water charges would only end when water charges were abolished. Public anger has remained high this week after a video appearing to show gardaí pushing an Irish Water protester into a steel bollard went viral. Speaking yesterday morning, the protestor, Fiona Healy, said she planned to lodge a complaint with the GSOC. Meanwhile, Ryan Tubridy called on Mr Kenny to appear on the Late Late Show and answer a few questions in ‘the national parlour room’.

Bid to boost Cyclist injured Wage cuts ‘a bus access in collision big mistake’ THE National Transport Authority (NTA) is carrying out a public consultation on how to make the commercial bus and coach sector wheelchair accessible. The sector provides around 7 per cent of all annual public transport journeys. The NTA has now asked the public to weigh in before December 16 with their opinions on how to move towards an accessible licensed bus sector, at nationaltransport.ie.

GARDAÍ are investigating a road collision involving a Dublin bus which left a female cyclist in a serious condition. At around 9.45pm on Monday, a 55-year-old female cyclist was injured when she was struck by the number 39 bus. The collision occurred on Burlington Road, Dublin 4. The woman was rushed to St Vincent’s Hospital. The bus driver did not require medical attention.

IrElAND’s growth will mean nothing if it does not protect its workers, an Italian expert warned. speaking at a conference in Dublin, Dr Thomas Fazi said that austerity and wage cuts had made Germany the ‘sick man’ of Europe and expressed concerns about Ireland taking the same path. He said Europe was on the verge of a ‘triple dip recession’ because of Germany’s policies.

Israel responds after four killed in synagogue storm Israel’s prime minister has ordered authorities to destroy the homes of the attackers who killed four people in a Jerusalem synagogue. Benjamin Netanyahu also ordered the demolition of homes of Palestinians involved in other recent deadly attacks. He announced the directive yesterday after a meeting with top security officials. He did not say when the demolitions would take place. Israel halted its much-maligned practice of home demolitions in 2005 after officials determined it was not an effective deterrent. But they have had a change of heart recently and begun to renew the tactic in certain cases. Two Palestinian cousins armed with meat cleavers and a gun stormed a Jerusalem synagogue during morning prayers yesterday, killing four in the city’s bloodiest attack in years. Police killed the attackers in a shootout. The attack ratcheted up fears of sustained violence in the city, which is already on edge amid soaring tensions over its most contested holy site. The dead worshippers were three americans and a Briton, all of whom held dual Israeli citizenship. The attack occurred in Har Nof, an ultra-Or-

by MOHAMMED DARAgHMEH thodox neighbourhood that has a large population of english-speakers. Mr Netanyahu vowed to ‘respond harshly,’ describing it as a ‘cruel murder of Jews who came to pray and were killed by despicable murderers.’ The Us Consulate in Jerusalem identified the americans as aryeh Kupinsky, Cary William levine and Mosheh Twersky. Twersky, the grandson of renowned Boston rabbi Joseph soloveichik, was the head of Yeshivas Toras Moshe, a religious seminary for english-speaking students. Israeli authorities identified the British man as avraham Goldberg. One Canadian was wounded in the attack, said a spokesman for Canada’s Foreign affairs Department. Us secretary of state John Kerry denounced it as an ‘act of pure terror and senseless brutality and violence’. Palestinian President Mahmoud abbas condemned the attack, the first time he has done so since a recent spike in deadly violence against Israelis. However, Hamas praised the attack from Gaza, where dozens took to the streets to celebrate.

Water safety award for hero Damo SINGER Damien Dempsey was among those honoured yesterday by Irish Water Safety for saving a life. Some 35 members of the public were presented with awards for their bravery, which saved the lives of 22 people in difficulty. Humble hero Dempsey joked yesterday on Today FM he wasn’t sure if he would attend the Seiko Just In Time Rescue awards but went in the end. ‘My mother wants to go,’ he told Ray D’Arcy, ‘I wouldn’t have gone myself. I might just send my ma in.’ Dempsey was on his way to a gig in June when he spotted two men in trouble in Enniscorthy’s River Slaney, and used a sheet to pull the man out. He said: ‘One of them was bobbing up and down and trying to come up for air. He was obviously struggling to keep afloat and his friend couldn’t keep him up for long.’ A number of gardaí were also recognised, along with 135 Irish Water Safety volunteers and lifeboat men.

Mild weather toll on clothes stores ERRATIC weather is driving clothing retailers to buy more often and closer to home, rather than rely on seasonal collections sourced months in advance. Global fashion chains such as Zara and H&M regularly change ranges, often dealing directly with factories to cut down delivery times and ensure a steady supply. Now others, from Marks & Spencer to Hugo Boss, are following suit, accepting the added costs to help reduce the risk that unseasonable weather leaves them with piles of unsold stock. An unusually warm September and October in Europe has hit sales of winter garments such as coats and boots by chains including Gerry Weber, IC Group and Next.

Let the smells ring out for Christmas It IS starting to smell a lot like Christmas as nearly half of Irish people say a real Christmas tree is their favourite festive scene. this is according to a new survey that found 55 per cent of us prefer to use a real fir as its smell brought back Christmas memories. ‘Of the five senses, smell is the most powerful trigger of emotions and memories. And the use of scent can really help shop and hotel owners create an atmosphere that captures the essence of Christmas,’ said Michael O’Mahoney of Rentokil Initial, which carried out the survey as part of its new range of Christmas scents. It found that visiting family was still the most popular activity for 47 per cent of Irish people on Christmas Eve, with 43 per cent having a drink in their local pub. Less than one per cent of us refuse to stick up a tree.

new apprentice system welcomed THE Government’s new apprenticeship scheme is ‘fundamentally important’ to the building sector, according to a leading construction group. The Construction Industry Federation hailed yesterday’s announcement of the Apprenticeship Council as ‘significant’. Speaking at its launch, Minister for Education and Skills Jan O’Sullivan said one of its first tasks would be to encourage employers and training providers to develop new apprenticeships in areas outside of traditional trades. Welcoming the news, Ibec, which represents Irish business, said the current system – limited to 26 occupations – no longer ‘reflects the broad skill needs of the Irish economy’. ‘A new model has the potential to boost skill levels across the economy and help get people into quality, sustainable jobs,’ said Ibec’s Head of Education, Tony Donohoe.

Shopping patterns of Irish revealed in online survey THE average Irish shopper spends a remarkable 16 days every year shopping, a new survey has shown. And most of us will spend four full days exercising our purchasing power between now and Christmas Eve, the online poll of 1,000 people revealed. We don’t split our time equally, however – we spend more than two hours a week in the supermarket shopping for essentials like groceries, or popping to the shop for a daily paper or a once-off purchase. We’re as picky about our clothes and shoes as we are our fruit and veg – we spend some two hours on aver-

More dedicated followers of fashion are prepared to shop for longer in search of the right look and price, admitting to spending hours, especially at the weekend, browsing rails. The poll, conducted by promocodes.ie, showed we spend around 40minutes shopping for health and beauty products. Meanwhile, we take a half hour on average when shopping for entertainment (books, films and music). However, while purchasers check out items in the store, they of-

ten then buy them online or at the supermarket where they find prices more competitive. One female respondent said: ‘In my lunch hour, I can easily kill the full

cheaper, then I buy it that way.’ They say it’s the thought that counts when it comes to gifts, but we spend much less time shopping for others than for ourselves – just 20minutes a week is spent looking for gifts. Shem Douglas from PromoCodes said: ‘We love to shop, or at least browse around the shops. It seems to be a hobby for a lot of people. ‘But for some, shopping can be a chore, especially something like food shopping. That’s why more and more people are looking at the online option. ‘Danger, sex and threat’ in Paddington film?

SceneS showing cross-dressing flirtation and a villainous taxidermist all contributed towards the new Paddington film being given a PG cert in the UK – much to the surprise of the famous bear’s creator. The British Board of Film classification (BBFc) posted the rating on its website, saying there was ‘dangerous behaviour, mild

threat, mild sex references (and) mild bad language’. It said ‘infrequent scenes of dangerous behaviour’ included Paddington hiding in a fridge, while ‘mild threat’ was seen when a villain ‘threatens to kill and stuff’ the famous bear. Among the ‘mild sex references’ is a ‘comic sequence in which a man disguised as a woman is

flirted with by another man’. Michael Bond, 88, the author of the 35million-selling books, who makes a cameo appearance in the film, said he was ‘totally amazed’. ‘I’d be very upset. I might not sleep well tonight. I can’t imagine what the sex references are. It doesn’t enter into it with the books, certainly,’ he said. Ben Whishaw voices the Peruvian

bear in the live-action film, which also features starring roles for Hugh Bonneville, Peter capaldi and nicole Kidman. Whishaw replaced colin Firth as the voice of Paddington after The King’s Speech star quit, saying he was having trouble finding the voice of the marmalade-loving bear. The film has been given the lowest G rating in Ireland.

JAMES: GIVE US ALE KISS AND A CARD

MATT CARDLE confused fans when he kissed and made up with his old Twitter rival James Arthur. The former X Factor winners have had a long-running feud but buried the hatchet after a chance encounter on Monday. ‘Great to meet you tonight @JamesArthur23 let’s knock boots soon,’ Cardle, 31, tweeted. But his fans were bemused as the term ‘knock boots’ is slang for having sex. ‘You know what that expression means right?’ one asked, while another wrote: ‘i know you made friends and whatever but having sex is a bit far, just hug it out.’ At least the pair seem to have got over their longrunning argument, sparked in 2012 when Arthur, 26, slated Cardle for not selling enough records. he hysteria over water charges is a sight to behold, with no attempt to examine how damaging the effects of giving in to this hysteria are. The reality is that in November 2010 this country needed an €80billion bailout. That was a result of the country being bust during the boom by the decisions of a small number of its own most powerful citizens. The scale of the problem thus created is highlighted by the fact that, as a consequence, this country needed to reduce its deficit from 32 per cent of national income to 3 per cent by 2014. Most of that plan has been implemented. The economy is growing. There are high levels of foreign investment.

Yet there is a group of people who want to use the water charges issue to reverse all that. They want to default on the bailout. They want to leave the eU and they want to get rid of multi-national investment. The problem is aggravated by much of the Irish media aiding and abetting the hysteria over water A Leavy charges. ■ It seems that KQuinn thinks that only gay people should be allowed to vote or have a say in the samesex marriage referendum – if Colin isn’t allowed have a say because he is not married (yet is a fantastic father), then only those involved are to be granted an opinion. Nokia unveils N1 tablet as first device using Android

NOKIA is launching a tablet computer months after selling its ailing handsets unit to Microsoft. The Finnish company’s new offering operates Android software – and its appearance immediately drew favourable comparisons with an iPad mini. The 7.9in N1 tablet will be available in China early next year, priced at €200, before being introduced to other markets. Sebastian Nystrom, from Nokia’s technologies unit, said the former global mobile phone leader was ‘pleased to bring the Nokia brand back into consumers’ hands’. He added that using Android will give the company access to 80 per cent of the world’s mobile consumers com-

pared with the 2.5 per cent who use Windows mobile devices. Nokia adopted Windows on its mobile phones when it started a strategic partnership with Microsoft in 2011. The slimmed-down company’s earnings have improved since the €5.7billion sale of its handset unit. It now has three remaining operations – networks, mapping and software. Reviewers said N1’s iPad-style appearance extends beyond the identical screen size and resolution to the aluminium design and the placement of the camera, buttons and headphone jack.

Having a vape with my bae is hot right now Not so long ago, someone who said they were off to vape with their bae while discussing the indyref would have been accused of talking gobbledegook. But new research into the most recent words to enter general parlance suggests this is now a perfectly reasonable sentence. oxford Dictionaries has announced vape as its international word of the year, reflecting the meteoric rise in popularity of electronic cigarettes. Bae, which is used as a term of endearment for a romantic partner and is popular on social media, was shortlisted for the title, along with indyref – used to describe the poll on Scottish independence.

iPod running out of juice? Then recharge it with poo FAeCeS could be used to power a future generation of mobile phones, scientists have said. Researchers have found a natural process which occurs within bacteria that could help improve ‘bio batteries’. It is hoped the discovery could produce energy for portable technology, such as mobiles, tablets and laptops. The study from the University of east Anglia (UeA) focused on how electrons cross bacterial proteins. Both human and animal waste contain bacteria which breathe minerals of iron much like we breathe oxygen. An electrical charge is released during this ‘breathing’ process. This is released from the cell, similar to the neutral wire in a

household plug, and can then be harnessed. Lead researcher Julea Butt, from the University of east Anglia’s schools of chemistry and biological sciences, said: ‘These bacteria can generate electricity in the right environment. ‘This is an exciting advance in our understanding of how some bacterial species move electrons from the inside to the outside of a cell and helps us understand their behaviour as robust electron transfer modules. ‘We hope that understanding how this natural process works will inspire the design of bespoke proteins which will underpin microbial fuel cells for sustainable energy production,’ she added.

olive oil prices to soar after tough year along Med If your favourite bottle of Mediterranean olive oil starts costing more, blame unseasonable European weather – and tiny insects. High spring temperatures, a cool summer and abundant rain are taking a big bite out of the olive harvest in some key regions of Italy, Spain, france and Portugal. Those conditions have also helped the proliferation of the olive fly and olive moth, which are calamitous blights. The shortfall could translate into higher shelf prices for some olive oils and is dealing another blow to southern Europe’s bruised economies as they limp out of the financial crisis. ‘The law of supply and demand is a basic law of the market,’ said Joaquim freire de Andrade, president of growers’ association olivum in Alentejo, Portugal, the country’s olive heartland. ‘It’s a tough year.’

Other than Justin Bieber remonstrating on a red carpet, the quickest way to spark a paparazzi punch-up is to shout: ‘Nikon kicks Canon’s a***’ or vice versa. What can we say? They’re a sensitive bunch. Nikon and Canon are the main DSLR heavyweights. DSLR stands for digital single-lens reflex – or, in other words, big boy cameras with swappable lenses. Drop the ‘D’ and you’re left with an SLR that uses film instead. To say there’s a DSLR and lens selection to suit your skill level, budget and desired photographic outcome is an understatement, so we recommend seeking expert advice before buying. Pentax also offer DSLRs, while bargains from Sony and Olympus can be found.

Compacts and compact systems

A decent digital compact can cost as little as €65. Megapixels, full HD, optical zoom, high ISO (so more sensitive to light) and

image stabilisation are important considerations when it comes to choosing, but so is sensor size. Bigger sensors let in more light and that means better pictures. If sharing is important, the Android-powered Samsung Galaxy Camera 2 uses apps like a smartphone for edits and uploads to social media, while travel compacts such as the Panasonic TZ40 and Canon PowerShot SX700 (below, left) offer a massive 30x optical zoom. Premium compacts are packed with features for photographers who like to tinker – check out the Sony RX100, Nikon P340, Fujifilm XQ1, Canon PowerShot S120, and Panasonic Lumix LF1. Beefier ‘bridge’ (halfway between a compact and a DSLR) cameras offer superzoom capabilities with fixed lenses, but the growing trend is for compact system cameras (CSC) that do take changeable lenses. CSCs are a smaller, lighter and simplified alternative to the pro DSLRs above. Top picks include the Kodak PixPro S-1, Olympus OM-D EM10, Sony A5100, Nikon 1 V3, Sony Alpha A5000 and Canon EOS M.

while the Fujifilm Instax Mini 8 is the cheapest in a range topped by the new Wide 300, which uses double-size film.

Smartphones

offerings include the Fuji X-T1, Nikon Df, plus good lookers from Leica.

Lomo and retro

How Lomo can you go? Ditch digital and embrace analogue photography with some choice picks from lomography.com. Launched recently after a successful crowdfunded campaign, the Lomo’Instant Sanremo Edition (below) is the movement’s first ever compact instant camera. The Sprocket Rocket has a penchant for panoramas, even on 35mm film, while the Diana mini with flash uses 35mm film to shoot full frame and half frame images. A fisheye lens offers superwide angle shots, and catch of the day is the Fisheye 2 (gold edition). If you’re intent on keeping things digital, but still want to appear vintage, the Fuji X30 (left) and Panasonic Lumix LX100 are our compact picks, while more opulent

Adrenaline junkies and Polaroid preachers, fear not: Santa’s sack is positively bulging with kooky kit. The 4K Go Pro HERO4 remains the actioncam king but faces competition from the distinctively designed Panasonic HX-A500, waterproof Contour Roam3 and the full HD Sony Action Cam Mini. The prize for the cutest cam goes to the tiny Polaroid Cube. The Ricoh Theta M15 (top, right) will capture 360-degree spherical, seamless stills and video, while it’s up-periscope with the waterproof HTC Re (right), a simple point-and-shoot video camera. Wearable, ‘lifelogging’ cameras are another growing trend, with the likes of the Autographer and Narrative Clip. It’s a shootout between Polaroid and Fujifilm for instant print cameras. The Polaroid Z2300 doubles as a digital snapper and photo printer,

Smartphone cameras used to purely be a case of megapixel willy waggling. Packing pixels is still useful but a handful of handsets stick out. The Samsung Galaxy K Zoom is a hybrid phone and optical camera that’s great for close-ups. Microsoft Nokia’s impressive cameras are epitomised by the Lumia 1020. You can’t sniff at 41 megapixels but it’s touches such as the Xenon flash, detailed images and low-light performance that we love. The waterproof Sony Xperia Z3 (right) is my phone of the year and includes a feature-packed camera. Sony QX’s lenses strap to pretty much any smartphone, transforming them into an optical super shooter. Apple’s iPhone 6 Plus (above) has the same 8-megapixel snapper as its smaller sibling, but includes image stabilisation and scored top marks for a smartphone camera in independent tests.

Note! We haven’t included RRPs as camera prices vary wildly depending on stockist and whether they come with interchangeable lenses, etc – shop around online before you buy.

troking his chin, idris Elba tries his best to do a very-bad-man expression when we meet in Los Angeles. ‘i’m never the really really nasty bad guy. i’m just too nice a guy to get those roles!’ laughs the 42-year-old actor. Grisly fate: Hassan as Lynsey Nolan in TV show Hollyoaks

Emotive: Hassan films scenes in new movie The Caravan Targeted: Hassan plays stalker victim Annie Brawley in The Fall

Sneaky previews Love ’em or hate ’em, trailers will always be there. But are they giving away too much these days, asks Anna Smith As A FiLm CriTiC keen to avoid spoilers, i used to abide by a basic rule: don’t reveal anything that’s not in the trailer. This was based on the idea that many audiences would already be well aware of the basic facts of a story from the trailer and the perhaps naive assumption that film companies wouldn’t want to spoil moviegoers’ experience by giving away plot points that were key to the film. But while they’re not in the majority, i have over the years been astonished by a few trailers that completely give the game away, such as Dream House, starring Daniel Craig. The 2000 film Cast Away famously featured a massive spoiler that revealed the ending. And i’m glad i saw the Jake Gyllenhaal film Nightcrawler before i saw the trailer, which outlines the plot of a film that thrives on the power to surprise. so i’m no longer taking trailers as my cue – and audiences aren’t best pleased with them, either. A recent study at the University of East Anglia found that the most popular trailers were those that teased and excited without revealing too much narrative. But this doesn’t necessarily translate to which movies they actually go to see. many who bought tickets for The Hobbit: The Desolation Of smaug were encouraged by the trailer but let down by the film. And 80 per cent of those who took the survey said they were ‘disappointed’ with a film after seeing the trailer. i sympathise with both camps here. With an ever competitive market, the onus is on trailer production companies to provide an enticing product that translates directly into sales. if the final film isn’t up to scratch, is that their problem? it’s their job to

make something look good – possibly better than it actually is. But it can leave the audience feeling cheated. real problems start when the trailer actually spoils the enjoyment of a strong film or when the trailer misrepresents it so badly that the target market is put off. i’ve used the better-than-it-looks-in-the-trailer line more than once. Here’s another common refrain: ‘All the best jokes are in the trailer.’ How disappointing is it to chuckle at a comedy trailer only to find those six gags are the only real zingers in the whole shebang? sure, often editors are doing their job by highlighting a comedy’s best qualities, but in some cases it can be a case of misrepresenting a comedy drama as a pure comedy, or making a serious film seem more accessible. Foreign films are often trailed with no dialogue and an American voice-over accompanying love scenes and comical interludes. The hope must be that people will fail to realise it’s a subtitled film until it’s too late. And of course i would say this but… if you want to know how good a film is, don’t watch the trailers, read the reviews.

Can’t cut it: For many, 2013’s Hobbit sequel didn’t live up to the trailer

‘Creepy is right up my street’ V

iewers of the crime thriller The Fall started season two seeing Karen Hassan, as Annie Brawley, recovering from being beaten into a coma by serial killer Paul spector – played by Jamie Dornan. After being stalked and almost murdered, her life is in ruins. Presumably the role wasn’t a laugh a minute to play? ‘Actually it was good fun!’ enthuses the chatty Northern irish actress. ‘i love anything creepy and scary so it was right up my street. i loved all the action stuff and the scenes where he’s sneaking up on her. it’s fun to play because you imagine how people sitting at home will be reacting.’ it’s a high-profile role for Hassan, who took a gamble in 2012 when she left Hollyoaks after a two-year stint playing character Lynsey Nolan, the victim in a whodunnit plot. ‘it was one of the biggest storylines the show has had. Hollyoaks was great – i learned a lot. sometimes we’d get scripts the morning of shooting and you learn how to produce something of a certain standard quickly.’ Hassan’s been busy since though. she features alongside sienna Miller and Tom Hiddleston in the 2015 film High-rise, has completed an independent family drama set in a caravan (called, surprise surprise, The Caravan) and has just finished shooting TV show Vikings – but she

Currently starring in thriller The Fall and with other TV and film roles in the pipeline, we’re about to see even more of Belfast’s Karen Hassan. By Andrew Williams can’t talk about that role. ‘if i tell you what my character gets up to, it’ll give the storyline away,’ she says. ‘But she is feisty and unlike any other character i’ve played.’ One role that we won’t be seeing her portray is that of Anastasia steele in the epic Fifty shades of Grey, having unsuccessfully auditioned for the part last year. ‘That was an eye-opening experience,’ she laughs, declining to give details of what her audition entailed. ‘it’s good to be able to go in and think “Can i play this?” and then push yourself out of your comfort zone. i’m excited for Jamie [Dornan] doing it – i’ll see it and support him.’

But not getting the job may have been a blessing in disguise for the actress. ‘i can’t say i’m a fan of the book. i liked the script so i’ll be interested to see how they’ve done it but i prefer books like Game of Thrones. i like fantasy and witches and historical fiction.’ Her current busy schedule comes after a stint of working in a wide variety of day jobs while pursuing the acting dream. ‘As an actor you always think, “i need a back-up plan,” but nothing has gripped me as much as acting. i haven’t found anything i love as much as being on set.’

So if Sarah Millican’s chirrupings about toast and alcoves don’t knock your socks off, then manic Russell Kane or the pithy observations of Joe Lycett might hit the spot.

Our money’s on Edwina Curry to be the first to have nasty things done to her on I’m A Celebrity...

BBC1, 9pm The remaining candidates go giddy with sugar-rush excitement when they get this week’s task: launching a soft drink in New York. That’s the ticket: a business jolly! But the fizz soon goes flat when the dime drops that not everyone is heading for the Big Apple – cue burps of bitterness in the boardroom.

3e and UTV, 9pm We’re just wildly speculating here but we predict that ‘surprise’ contestant Edwina Currie will have nasty stuff happen to her sooner rather than later (insert your own John Major gag here), while X Factor reject Jake Quickenden will most likely be whipping out his tattooed body faster than you can say ‘bikini bodies in the shower’. And will Dublin model Nadia Forde ever perfect that bark and vine bikini she’s been working on? She has our full support, either way...

Sky Living, 9pm After the bombshells last week involving Meredith’s family secrets, this week it’s the Callie and Arizona hour as the spotlight falls on Grey Sloan Memorial Hospital’s lesbian power couple. Their marriage is in trouble and they turn to counselling – and a trial separation.

Chadwick Boseman tells Andrew Williams about playing soul legend James Brown

‘I

t’s dangerous,’ says Chadwick Boseman of staying in character for extended periods of time – as he did for the 49 days spent playing James Brown for biopic Get On Up. ‘I’ve seen it in other people,’ he says. ‘they start to behave like their character would. If you don’t stop and debrief, you never know what you might say to someone that you’ll have to apologise for later…’ And presumably that potential with playing the Godfather of soul was enormous. Get On Up follows a pretty familiar biopic path – directed by tate taylor, best known of 2011’s the Help, it jumps around to differ-

ent points of Brown’s life to show us what turned him into such a troubled and at times ruthless megalomaniac. For Boseman, it meant playing Brown at the ages of 17, 35 and 63. ‘I played him in jail at 17 and in jail at 63 on the same day because the locations were next door to each other,’ he says. ‘sometimes it was a tall order.’ It was an intense experience and one that pays off for Boseman – his striking performance holds the film together. He nearly turned the part down, having just finished 42, another biopic about baseball star Jackie Robinson. ‘I didn’t think I should touch it at all but then I learned the choreography, put on the hair, the clothes, put the whole persona together and

film has changed things,’ he says. ‘It’s bigger budget stuff, leading roles, working with higher-profile actors. Anything you would think it would be – it’s that,’ he laughs. ‘But you can only concentrate on one thing at a time,’ he adds. ‘I’m being careful about what I follow this up with, it doesn’t have to be a leading role, just something I’m passionate about.’ Before putting the Black Panther mask on, he has to finish the screenplay for a thriller he’s sold to Universal – having started out as a director at university, putting on new writing, shakespearean productions

and ‘hip-hop fusion theatre.’ He’ll be starring in the film, too. ‘It’s good to create your own work,’ he says. ‘It’s the difference between buying a suit off the rack or getting one tailor-made. the tailormade one is going to fit you better.’ this writing project looks like it might be the last behind-the-camera job he’ll do for a while. ‘I’m sure there’ll come a time when I want to write something, produce something or maybe direct,’ he says. ‘But right now, I’m firmly into the acting – it’s going pretty good.’

Get On Up is in cinemas this week.

A brush with two speeds that rotates in one direction while vibrating. it pauses every 20 seconds and turns off after a minute. it’s waterproof and the charger also plugs into a storage cradle. New research by Cornell University shows that when you eat in front of the TV you are more likely to overindulge – especially if you’re watching an action movie. Concentrate on your meal by eating at the table with screens turned off. Jose hands fans a shot at putting finger on it BIDDING is to begin for the middle finger of one of baseball’s greatest home-run hitters. Jose Canseco had his left middle index digit surgically repaired after he accidentally shot it off while cleaning a revolver in the kitchen at his Las Vegas home. But the finger then fell off while he was dealing a hand during a poker tournament and the former Oakland Athletics, New York Yankees and Boston Red Sox star has put it and the gun up for sale as a package deal. He tweeted: ‘The eBay ad will read slightly used middle finger with 462 home runs could be used as a stirring straw for drinks’

RoRy McIlRoy believes he can use his recent break to his advantage at this week’s World Tour Championship, as he chases the fifth victory of a marvellous season. The Northern Irishman missed the first three events of the Final Series to prepare for his upcoming court case with a former management company but secured a second Race to Dubai title in three years when none of his nearest rivals were able to win the Turkish Airlines open. The 25-year-old insists, however, he remains highly motivated despite sealing that success. ‘I’m very proud to have won the Race to Dubai again,’ he said. ‘But at the same time it would be nice to pick up two trophies on Sunday and not just one. I’m still very motivated to go out there this week and perform well. ‘I still want

Blatter has insisted the investigation into 2018 and 2022 World Cup bidding will not be reopened despite the world governing body lodging a criminal complaint with the Swiss attorney general over ‘suspected unlawful activity’ of unnamed individuals connected with the bidding contests. The report to the Swiss prosecutors follows a recommendation by Fifa’s ethics judge, Hans-Joachim Eckert, as part of his findings into the Garcia investigation on World Cup bidding. Blatter said, however, that the lodging of the criminal complaint does not affect Eckert’s statement last week that the

investigation into the bidding process for the two World Cups is concluded. Blatter told Fifa’s website: ‘There is no change to judge Eckert’s statement that the investigation into the bidding process is concluded. The matter will now also be looked at by an independent, state body, which shows that Fifa is not opposed to transparency.’ A Fifa statement said: ‘The subject of the criminal complaint is the possible misconduct of individual persons in connection with the awarding of the hosting rights of the 2018 and 2022 World Cups investigated by Michael Garcia, chairman of the investigatory chamber of the Ethics Committee.’

USA bunched as Brady doubles up THe republic of Ireland took the lead in last night’s friendly against the USa after just seven minutes. anthony Pilkington worked well off a fine set-up by david McGoldrick, the latter making his senior debut for Ireland and impressing by being a constant thorn in the side of Jurgen Klinsmann’s statesiders. american keeper Bill Hamid made a vital save from daryl Murphy at 1-0 to keep the visitors in it, but Fabian Johnson and Jozy altidore were both denied by the woodwork. Mix diskerud denied the republic of Ireland a half-time lead as the United States hit back with a goal to go in at the break all square. diskerud stabbed home a 39th-minute equaliser from Chris Wondolowski’s knock-down to cancel out anthony Pilkington’s seventh-minute opener, his first senior goal for his country. By and large, Jurgen Klinsmann’s side enjoyed the better of the opening 45 minutes. Ireland pulled away in the second half, however, thanks to goals from robbie Brady – again assisted by debutant McGoldrick – before James McClean’s deflected shot found its way in behind Hamid. With the Boys in Green looking out of sight and only four minutes remaining on the clock, robbie Brady sealed victory with his second goal of the night at Lansdowne road, one that Martin O’neill will have much to rejoice over after a week of management headaches.

Ulster star Jared to miss Wallabies tie

Jared Payne will miss Ireland’s Test clash with australia on Saturday after failing to recover from his foot sprain, team bosses have confirmed. The Ulster centre’s absence paves the way for boss Joe Schmidt to pair Gordon d’arcy and robbie Henshaw. Former new Zealand Under-21 star Payne made his Test debut in Ireland’s 29-15 victory over South africa, but hobbled off and was ruled out of action for last weekend’s Georgia clash. The 29-year-old was unable to battle back to training, and will now miss Ireland’s pursuit of a clean sweep. after Payne’s absence was confirmed, forwards coach Simon easterby said Ireland value performance levels over a potential seventh consecutive victory.

by DAnny HOgAn ‘I think the performance is first and foremost,’ said easterby. ‘you get the performance right, then you get your processes right, and you get results out of the back of that. ‘Is it important to us to get a clean

‘The performance is first and foremost’ sweep? not really. ‘Is it important to us to keep improving and keep getting better as a team and players? yes, and that’s first and foremost. ‘Continual improvement is the most important thing.’

number eight Jamie Heaslip wished flanker Chris Henry a swift and full recovery from the ‘temporary blockage of a small blood vessel in his brain’. Leinster back-rower Heaslip admitted Ireland will be weaker in Henry’s absence, but said his full recovery is the obvious clear concern. ‘He’s a big loss for us, he’s a great player,’ said Heaslip. ‘I don’t want to talk too much on his situation as it would be unfair of me and it’s a private matter. ‘all the players are thinking of him obviously and he’s got the best guys looking after him now. ‘He’s a nightmare to play against: like every good seven he’s got that ability in the dark arts to get in there and mess ball up.’
