Webcam spies ‘in our homes’
IT experTs are warning the public to get serious about protecting their privacy after it emerged that a russianbased website allows users to see into dozens of Irish homes. The site provides live feeds of thousands of private webcams, baby monitors and CCTV systems from more than 100 countries around the world, including the UK, Australia, Canada and the Us. It’s understood to link to 53 camera systems in Ireland. Among the feeds claimed to be Irish, there appears to be one from inside a child’s cot in Meath, while another links to a playroom in a Dublin house. security experts are advising that anyone using web-based camera systems should reset their passwords, as the site relies on users not changing their default passwords or using ones that are easily guessed.
By DaviD kearns
A spokesperson for the Office of the Data protection Commissioner has said it is aware of the website but it had no power to prevent it from hijacking people’s unsecure web cameras. ‘Because the website is based outside our jurisdiction, there is little that can be done by the Irish authorities to compel it to take down the streams,’ it said, adding that the best way people could protect themselves was to use ‘robust’ passwords and to turn off their cameras when not needed. The site itself claims to be ‘fully legal’ and operating to ‘show the importance of security settings’. It says it only ‘contains access to cameras without a password’. The operators say they are publishing details of feeds to highlight the vulnerability of such systems.

1.5m of snow in 24 hrs, and more to come
A HISTORIC and deadly snowfall has blanketed North America, with freezing weather striking 50 states. At least eight people have died in snowrelated incidents in New York State, with further deaths in New Hampshire and Michigan. More than 165cm of snow fell on a suburb of Buffalo in New York State in less than 24 hours and almost 1m more was expected to hit the north-east today. Hundreds of thousands of people are stuck in their homes and some motorists were stranded in their cars for 36 hours. More than 100 vehicles were trapped along a 212-km stretch of New York State’s main through route,

which remained closed yesterday. A woman gave birth in a fire station after the snow prevented her from reaching hospital. Even for Buffalo, a city used to blizzards blowing in from Lake Erie, this was an epic snowfall, according to forecasters. Governor Andrew Cuomo said: ‘This is an historic event. When all is said and done, this snowstorm will break all sorts of records. It will get worse before it gets better.’ He warned that a weekend warm-up could lead to significant flash flooding when the thick blanket melts. The snowfall is approaching the heaviest 24-hour fall on record in the mainland US. In 1921, 193cm fell at Silver Lake in Colorado.

TV bosses run out of jungle celebrities
TWO of its biggest stars have quit and there are no celebrities lined up to replace them in the jungle – but the show must go on, insist TV bosses. I’m A Celebrity... Get Me Out Of Here! was plunged into chaos yesterday as Red Dwarf actor Craig Charles quit the show following the sudden death of his brother, Dean. His exit came just hours after Towie star Gemma Collins, 33, walked off. But station chiefs last night insisted jungle life would carry on as normal. ‘There is no chaos,’ a spokesman for the show said. Campmates were in tears as Charles, 50, told them his tragic news. Former newsreader Michael Buerk, 68, said: ‘It’s terrible for him and sad for us too, because he was a great guy to have around.’ As life in the jungle continued, footballer Jimmy Bullard, 36, and Playboy model Kendra Wilkinson, 28, ate antelope penis and turkey testicles in the latest bushtucker challenge.

Bid to fight deadly bugs No line extension plan yet A NEW multi-department committee will tackle the growing problem of antibiotic-resistant germs. Deadly bugs like MRSA are becoming increasingly dangerous because of incorrect use of antibiotics, so the Government is seeking to raise awareness.
REPORTS of an extension of the Dart line as far as Drogheda are a little premature, it seems. It was reported yesterday the Government had asked Irish Rail to research such a proposal, but a spokesman said there were no confirmed plans.

Savage Eye hit with wave of BAI complaints By DAvID KEARnS
It seems comedy is really in the eye of the beholder as the savage eye was hit with a wave of Broadcasting Authority of Ireland (BAI) complaints. Religious intolerance, exploitation of children, foul language, and, bizarrely, the show’s title were all things people found the time to get outraged over.
Another said RTÉ should ‘delete all child sketches’ In all, four complaints were submitted, mostly related to a show that aired on may 5, but the BAI found no reason to uphold any of them, noting that the satirical comedy was, in fact, a satirical comedy and, as such, its regular audience would be familiar with its subject matter and style of the humour. Common among the complaints lodged was the use of real children to ‘satirically observe’ the loss of childhood innocence, which one man described as ‘extremely
vile’ and ‘grossly irresponsible’. Another stated that children should not be used on ‘an adult show’ and that RtÉ should ‘delete all child sketches from this programme’ and rename it ‘the savage mouth’ due to the ‘deeply offensive, racist and irresponsible’ language used. summing up its remaining findings, the BAI said the programme was preceded by a warning and was broadcast on RtÉ two after the watershed. meanwhile, the authority upheld a complaint against Newstalk related to an item on the Dublin Gay Pride Parade. the complaint lodged said two panellists on the Breakfast show were given ‘free rein’ to talk about the importance of passing the same-sex marriage referendum completely unopposed. It also claimed that ‘the presenters were completely sympathetic to all of the panel’s arguments and did not challenge them on a single point.’ In response, Newstalk stated the item was not a debate or a discussion on the issue but was a human-interest piece. the BAI partially upheld the complaint.

Home fit for Love/Hate king ARE you looking to live your own Love/Hate lifestyle (minus the crime element, obviously)? Well, the penthouse home of fictional drug trafficker John Boy Power — played by Aidan Gillen in series one and two of the popular crime drama — is up for sale. The property is part of the sale of The Granary, a block of 14 apartments at Distillery Lofts in Drumcondra, Dublin 9. The set of homes is on the market for €3.5million.
The building was also the former location of the Dublin Whiskey Distillery Co. Once let, it is estimated that all 14 units will produce a gross income of €220,200 per year. But while John Boy met a gruesome end at the hands of one of his associates, his plush pad is still looking great. Estate agent Savills said: ‘The exceptionally large penthouse extends to 3,423sqft and offers panoramic views of Croke Park, the city centre and Holy Cross College’. The current tenants will not be affected by the sale.

Glitch fixed by Irish Rail The signal ‘glitch’ that has plagued evening commuters over the last two months has been solved, Irish Rail stated. Passengers were left stranded in the capital yesterday after all services on the Drogheda to Greystones line were delayed by 30 minutes when the signal fault stuck again. Irish Rail managed to repair the glitch. Meanwhile, 40,000 vehicles used the new Newland’s Cross flyover, with many tweeting about the shorter travel times.

Bailey, 57, who also admitted smoking cannabis up to six times a day at one stage in the early-1990s, said he sorted his drink problems at 120 AA meetings over 90 days in late 2001. mr Bailey told the jury in his lawsuit for wrongful arrest that he used alcohol in an attempt to deal with the early stages of the murder inquiry.
An emotional mr Bailey said he went to AA in Skibbereen after his conviction for assaulting partner Jules Thomas in 2001 – more than three years on from his second arrest. earlier, mr Bailey, who lives with ms Thomas at the Prairie Cottage, Liscaha, Schull, was shown a selection of his personal writings and he admitted they showed his concerns that people in west Cork looked on him as a ‘foolish bowsie’ because of his drinking During a heated exchange under cross examination on the material, mr Bailey hit out at his documents being revealed to the court. ‘I’m unhappy that my private writings are being used against me,’ he told the court. mr Bailey is suing the Garda Commissioner, the minister for Justice and the Attorney General for wrongful arrest and a series of other alleged failings in the 1996 murder investigation. The State denies all claims.

Young Mr Fish uses mackerel as mothers to bluefin tuna by ELAinE kuRTEnbAcH
IT SOUNDS like a crack pot idea – but, if it works, it might well save an endangered species from extinction. Bluefin tuna is dying out because it is being over-fished having become a popular, if somewhat pricey, menu choice at sushi bars in recent years. But marine scientist Goro Yamazaki has come up with an idea to save the torpedo-shaped species – which can grow up to the size of a small car. His plan is to take stem cells from the discarded guts of tuna from fish farms – and insert them into mackerel. Under the right conditions, the stem
‘He plans to make stem cells from tuna guts’ cells will migrate into the ovaries of the mackerel, reckons Mr Yamazaki. So when the smaller fish mature, they will spawn bluefin tuna and help the species to survive. The surrogate tuna could then be farmed, relieving pressure on wild fish stocks and preserving the species’ vital genetic diversity, said Mr Yamazaki. But why is the 48-year-old bothering to help? Raised in Kamakura, south of Tokyo, he spent all his time fishing and swimming of the city’s coast – where he became known as ‘Young Mr Fish’. In a ‘once-in-a-lifetime’ encounter 15

‘Horror’: Chef Gordon Ramsey manager for his companies. He told the judge his ‘deep and extensive trust in Hutcheson was entirely misplaced’ and his father-in-law defrauded him and the group ‘of hundreds of thousands of pounds’. in October 2010, Mr Hutcheson was ‘summarily
dismissed from the group’. He said: ‘the company is still in the hook for the lease, and what was devastating for my wife and i was that we were guaranteeing it until 2033. ‘there were many horrific discoveries because i can recognise my signature and pinpoint one forged by machine.’ the judge was told a key issue was whether Mr Hutcheson was authorised, while managing the ramsay group businesses, to use a ‘ghost writer’ machine which he had obtained and which was used to sign ramsay’s name on the personal guarantee. Film director Gary love, who owns the york & Albany, has described ramsay’s allegation as an ‘absurd’ attempt to wriggle out of his rental commitments.

ig D, you really need to get over yourself. The marches you are so let down by are about protesting water charges. Despite what you may think, not all marches are about you and gay pride. Nothing can beat the experience of hearing Benjamin Britten’s War Requiem in a great cathedral, and cathedrals don’t come much greater than St Patrick’s. Britten composed the work for the 1962 reconsecration of Coventry Cathedral, which had been flattened during the War. A lifelong pacifist, he decided not just to set the usual movements of the Latin Requiem Mass but intersperse them with lyrics by the war poet Wilfred Owen. Flight Of The Conchords fans won’t want to miss this mockumentary about a group of flat-sharing vampires in contemporary New Zealand. Written and directed by Conchords’ Jemaine Clement and Taika Waititi, it also stars Clement as the vain Vladislav and Waititi as Viago, his dandy flatmate. Deacon (Jonathan Brugh) is the ‘bad boy’ of the bunch but much of this film’s humour lies in the fact that these vampires are not nearly as cool as they think they are. They’re deluded, stuck in the past and still find it difficult to

kill people without making an unholy mess. It’s silly and funny, playing with clichés both in the vampire fiction genre and the reality TV world (just start to imagine Big Brother with a bunch of vampires and you can see the comic possibilities). As Viago’s human familiar, Jackie van Beek is fun, but underused: this is a bit of a boys’ club, but an amusing one. Clement fans will be pleased.
Hilary Swank is the main reason to catch this western directed by her co-star, Tommy Lee Jones. She plays Mary Bee Cuddy, a strongminded, plain-speaking farmer on the Nebraskan plains in the mid-1800s. Times are hard and they’ve taken their toll on three local women, who’ve had dramatic breakdowns. Mary Bee agrees to drive them to a safe house in a wagon, but it’s a long and hard journey. Her reluctant helper is George Briggs (Jones), a selfish, lazy man. It’s a curious story but one with atmosphere and a terrific turn from Swank, who puts in an utterly committed performance that’s by turns
Driving force: Swank as Mary Bee Cuddy poignant, thought-provoking and darkly funny. There’s a strong support cast, too, that includes Miranda Otto and Hailee Steinfeld. It’s a shame, then, that the film’s final act disappoints and the three women’s problems aren’t fully explored. But it still has its charms.
This Turkish drama won the Palme D’Or at this year’s Cannes Film Festival and is about an Anatolian hotelier who spends a difficult winter with his wife and sister.

BBC1, 11.05pm Mr Norton has a golden opportunity as he welcomes Horrible Bosses 2 stars Jennifer Aniston and Jason Bateman onto his sofa. ‘So Jen, can you explain what the flip was going on in The Leftovers?’ – a roundabout way of introducing Justin Theroux into the conversation. Dame Judi Dench is also guesting.

2. Alan Carr: Chatty Man
C4, 10pm It’s double-diva time as the divine Miss M, Bette Midler, holds court with a starstruck Carr by way of promoting her new album. Also guesting is everyone’s favourite soul crooner Sam Smith – now if our host could have squeezed a duet out of those two he’d have had a true coup.

3. Country Kings At The BBC BBC4, 10pm
If you fancy a sleepy twang for a Friday night then look no further than this trawl through some of the Nashville legends who’ve brought a touch of the Grand Ole Opry to a BBC studio. Willie Nelson, Johnny Cash and Glen Campbell are some of the bona fide greats featured – but not quite sure how yodeller Frank Ifield sneaked in here.

4. Cuckoo
BBC1, 11.50pm
If you missed the second series of this endearing comedy on its first BBC3 outing, then here’s the perfect chance to catch up. Twilight brooder Taylor Lautner – yes, that IS him under the beard – reveals deft comic timing as he turns up unannounced at the Thompson household in Lichfield. It turns out he’s a fledgling fallen rather convolutedly from the nest…
5. I’m A Celebrity... Get Me Out Of Here!
3e/UTV, 9pm Following the premature exit of Gemma Collins – we too were gutted – we’re making no predictions as to what’s rumbling in the jungle. But the latest exploits of Nadia Forde and co should make the perfect viewing for a glamorous night in (think takeaway curry and a can).

6. Lilyhammer
Netflix A welcome return for the odd mix of Norwegian fjords and Mafia Joes that is Lilyhammer, the offbeat thriller starring Steven Van Zandt (the actor formerly known as Bruce Springsteen’s rocker mate Little Steven). This is season three and the mix of Noo Yawk accents and woolly knits makes for a bracing change.
7. Masters Of Sex
RTÉ2, 11.05pm The only downside to this finely penned and acted US drama is that it is perhaps keeping Michael Sheen
from roles on the big screen. Tonight, Masters treats a couple privately for infertility issues but doesn’t reveal the true nature of his relationship to them. Elsewhere, Johnson sees a way for her work to benefit those suffering from forms of sexual dysfunction. Much more sophisticated than it perhaps appears at first.
8. The Christmas Toy Show
TV3, 8pm It’s hard to imagine anything fronted by Brian McFadden, Karen Koster and Jedward having as much of a festive impact as RTÉ’s long-running
Late Late Toy Show but you never know. Getting in early before Mr Tubridy, this take on the formula by TV3 promises to showcase all the must-have toys for children this year.
9. The Works
RTE1, 8.30pm John Kelly’s peerless arts magazine show spoils us tonight with a look at the new James Brown biopic Get On Up and an introduction to Printer Clips, the new collaboration between BellX1’s Paul Noonan and Lisa Hannigan. There’s also a look at Martina Devlin’s new book The House Where It Happened.
10. Today’s Film: Mystic River
TV3, 10pm
Clint Eastwood much-lauded and awards-ravaging drama deserves a rewatch 11 years on from its release, not only for the strength of its superb cast – Sean Penn, Tim Robbins, Kevin Bacon – but also the atmosphere and tone struck by the former Dirty Harry. Three blue collar school pals take very different routes to adulthood, only to find those paths reconvege discordantly. It may not make for a first-date flick, but as a redemptive, thought-provoking saga, it stands out.

pale adaptation lacks brontë’s raw passion THEATRE REviEW
WutHering HeigHts HHIII TranslaTing Emily Brontë’s gothic masterpiece for the stage is a daunting task, not least because of the novel’s complex, stories-within-stories structure and its intricate family tree. although writer anne-Marie Casey has wisely decided to hone in on the core Cathy/Heathcliff relationship – omitting their offspring entirely – for this new production at The gate Theatre, it often feels like a box-ticking summary, particularly in its brisk first act. The story is told from the perspective of omniscient servant nelly Dean (Fiona Bell), who is prompted to share the sorrowful history of Wuthering Heights when a stranger (Bosco Hogan as Mister lockwood) fetches up in the eponymous, crumbling Yorkshire pile. While this potentially clumsy narrative device is deftly handled (Bell is excellent as the story’s moral compass), problems begin to arise when actors confuse histrionic outbursts for impassioned ones. rather than underplay the novel’s largerthan-life emotions, director Michael Barker-Caven has chosen to give them free rein; this is unfortunate as would-be torrid scenes between Kate Brennan’s Cathy and Tom Canton’s otherwise impressive Heathcliff feel either manufactured or melodramatic. For all the hand-wringing, shouting and swooning we get little sense of why the pair are drawn inexorably and tragically towards one another. rebecca

Fengler’s 2013 debut album, Fokus, surprised many of his fans as he displayed a far wider sonic range, but this weekend he’s sure to stay focused on the streamlined, relentless DJ sound that he was first known for. Tomorrow, Subject/Pogo, The Twisted Pepper, Middle Abbey Street, D1, 11pm, €13/€15.
This weekend, the Hub plays host to an impressive line-up of artists who explore electronic music’s outer limits. UK electro and techno producer Dez Williams makes music almost on a daily basis, but has limited his releases to key labels like SCSI-AV and Dublin’s Earwiggle. By contrast, William Bennett has been putting out provocative music under a variety of guises since the 1980s, most notably as part of noise band Whitehouse and Cut Hands. For this weekend’s show, Bennett is performing as Cut Hands, a Haitian-inspired musical project that embraces voodoo rhythms. Completing the line-up is techno duo AnD, whose abrasive live set promises to batter the audience into submission. Tomorrow, Shady Promoters, The Hub, Eustace Street, D2, 10pm, €12/€15.
Chris Liebing
Chris Liebing is the man with the biggest smile in dance music and he brings his good mood and enthusiasm to everything he does. Liebing was playing hard and heavy techno – known in his native Germany as ‘Schranz’ – long before it was fashionable and his CLR label has released countless records by underground artists like Hardcell, Eric Sneo, Perc and Traversable Wormhole. Liebing is also one of the most animated DJs on the international circuit and he’s sure to get the crowd moving this weekend. Tonight, District8, 135-138 Francis Street, D8, 11pm, €15/€18.

Smouldering: Cathy (Kate Brennan) and Heathcliff (Tom Canton) in Wuthering Heights O’Mara and stephen swift as the much put-upon lintons are, however, very convincing in two low-key roles. Paul O’Mahony’s set is cleverly deployed to mark changes in scene and location but this production gains little from the use of gimmicky video projections. as a distillation of the windswept romance at the heart of the novel, this Wuth-

Yeah, I discovered this album late in the game – but man do I love it now. This is definitely a great one to pop on your headphones as you’re disembarking from a flight.
I’m in Memphis today, which explains why I’ve gone for Mr Orbison. Although the man is not originally from these parts, he laid down some early musical roots here. But any excuse is a good excuse for turning to this stunning song.
This is another track I never tire of. It’s just great to turn to when on a long drive with some distance still to go – perfect music for the scenery.

Business&Careers Irish Water still has to pass European test by bRIAn HuTTOn
TánaisTe Joan Burton has said she can not predict whether or not irish Water will pass european semi-state rules. busInEss bITEs n IRELAND will repay €18.3billion in IMF loans ahead of schedule. Sweden provided a loan of €0.6billion to Ireland in 2011 and yesterday formally agreed to a waiver of its mandatory proportional early repayment clauses. This decision follows similar agreements with the UK and Denmark. n Almost 19,300 days have been lost to industrial action this year, according to the CSO. The majority were in industry, with the transport and storage sectors accounting for the rest. The figure for the third quarter of 2014 was up by 62 per cent on the same period in 2013. n Companies that prioritise employees’ mental health are more productive and have lower levels of absenteeism, an Irish social enterprise has claimed. MyMind said: ‘Productivity is negatively affected when employee wellbeing is low. In fact, 50 to 60 per cent of all lost working days can be attributed to work-related stress.
Ms Burton said predicting the outcome of the test would be like trying to predict your Leaving Cert result or whether your car will pass an nCT. But the Labour leader insisted she was confident. ‘i am satisfied that we will pass the test,’ she told the Dáil. Barry Cowen, Fianna Fáil environment spokesman, said the bottom line was that irish Water – under the new charges regime – has not passed european standards for funding. Meanwhile, a Fine Gael TD has claimed ireland is facing into an islamic state situation unless authorities ‘nip in the bud’ some anti-water charge protests. Referring to the demonstration over the weekend targeting Ms Burton, noel Coonan compared the dissent with extreme islamic terrorists known for ethnic cleansing and executing western journalists.

Robbie keen for a crack at 13 against Cheika’s Wallabies

Selection headache: Four stars return to coach Matt O’Connor
nO LA DOLCE viTA DOWn in TREvisO buT A CHAnCE TO CATCH sCHMiDT’s EyE leiNSTeR coach Matt O’connor must be happy this week as a quartet of players were passed fit for action this weekend. a trip to Treviso is always fraught with apprehension no matter what form the hosts are in or how strong leinster’s travelling party is. Still, the return of Jordi Murphy, Shane Jennings, Dave kearney and Fergus McFadden will give the team an equal amount of power and cutting edge. While Jennings is out of the mix for the international stage, the trio of returnees will be hungry to get into form and back into ireland coach Joe Schmidt’s thoughts. Murphy won a Six Nations medal last season but has been passed by his provincial teammate Dominic Ryan while Rhys Ruddock has firmly cemented his place in the irish squad now. McFadden and kearney also have a taste for Test action but their first mission is to get into the leinster team. That will not prove easy given that Darragh Fanning has found his groove and Zane kirchner is unlikely to lose his place any time soon. Oh, there’s also a guy called luke Fitzgerald in the mix too. With a backlog of injured wingers currently unavailable to Schmidt, he has been forced to select Simon Zebo for the past couple of ireland games

have conceded in just 7 Pro12 games this season. despite the fact that he lacks in a lot of areas when compared to the leinster players mentioned and the currently sidelined andrew Trimble of Ulster. So far this season, leinster have displayed more grit than grace and with so many options now becoming available in the backline, the competition in training is surely going to drive up the performances on the pitch. leinster arrive in northern italy on Sunday to face the Guinness Pro12’s bottom team who are yet to win a game this season. it looks like a slam dunk but with ring rusty players to fit back into his team O’connor will be wary of an upset. a win of any kind is always a good result in italy and it will be the likes of in-form players in the pack like kane Douglas and Jack conan to set the tone for the province. This is where Jennings is vital because even if he starts on the bench his presence in the dressing room will provide assurance for less experienced players. Treviso is the least glamorous spot on the circuit, but for the likes of kearney, McFadden, Murphy and Fitzgerald it could be their starting point towards the Six Nations.
Joe Schmidt has admitted he cannot ‘ask too much more’ of Robbie henshaw as the connacht centre wrestles with Brian o’driscoll’s legacy. henshaw will have his first crack at 13 shirt against Australia on Saturday when he lines up alongside Gordon d’Arcy in ireland’s midfield. head coach Schmidt expects henshaw to form a solid partnership with Leinster stalwart d’Arcy. Jared Payne’s foot injury means the wait to anoint now-retired o’driscoll’s successor will run until the RBS 6 Nations, but Schmidt is demanding solidity first against the Wallabies. ‘i don’t know if you can ask too much more of Robbie,’ said Schmidt. ‘i

‘Cheika knows us and will tap into that’ thought he delivered a really solid performance against South Africa. it was very seamless, him moving into 12. ‘At 13, there will be some different challenges: israel Folau will be coming into that area, there will be some traffic for Johnny (Sexton), Gordon and Robbie to cope with. Robbie must also link with the wingers and that will be another challenge for him. ‘Robbie and Gordon spent a bit of time together when d’Arcy got back fully fit. they’ve had a little bit of time together, they’ve enjoyed two training sessions together this week, that’s pretty much all we’ve had time to do. ‘i’m just hoping they can feed off each other, connect and link really well, and make sure there’s no space for some of those big Australian runners to come through.’ Schmidt has brought back his big guns
ireland team: R Kearney (Leinster), T Bowe (Ulster), R Henshaw (Connacht), G D’Arcy (Leinster), S Zebo (Munster), J Sexton (Racing Metro), C Murray (Munster), J McGrath (Leinster), R Best (Ulster), M Ross, D Toner (both Leinster), P O’Connell (capt), P O’Mahony (both Munster), R Ruddock, J Heaslip (Leinster). Replacements: S Cronin (Leinster), D Kilcoyne (Munster) R Ah You (Connacht), D Foley, T O’Donnell (both Munster), E Reddan, I Madigan (both Leinster), F Jones (Munster). following last weekend’s 49-7 victory over Georgia. mike Ross and Simon Zebo are the only survivors from that rout, with fit-again Rory Best back at hooker. Rhys Ruddock returns at openside given chris henry’s brain injury. Sexton, meanwhile, is aiming ‘not to get too bogged down’ by facing his Leinster mentor michael cheika. ‘cheiks will change things a lot, he knows we’ll have done a lot of analysis, so i’m sure he’ll throw a different picture at us on Saturday,’ said Sexton. ‘he’ll probably know us as players and
characters, and he’ll try to tap into that. ‘We’ve got great respect for what he did for Leinster Rugby and for irish rugby. i texted him a couple of weeks ago to congratulate him on the new job, and he texted back looking for a few tips on the Welsh boys. ‘in terms of Leinster, he was instrumental in changing our mindset, changing the culture in the organisation. And that allowed Joe to come in and take off, take the organisation on the way he did, but without cheiks that wouldn’t have been as seamless as it was.’
i’m not Beale’s social worker, says cheika
Michael cheika has vowed not to play ‘social worker’ to controversy-plagued australia utility back kurtley Beale. The Wallabies boss pledged Beale will pay his near €32,000 fine for sending a lewd text to former business manager Di Patston, amid suggestions the 25-year-old was yet to comply with his punishment. Beale will take a seat on the bench for australia’s autumn Test clash with ireland at the aviva tomorrow, rehabilitated into the Wallabies squad after his twomatch ban and fine. coach ewen Mckenzie and administrator Patston both resigned last month over Beale’s clashes with australia’s

former business manager. New Wallabies head coach cheika said he will prize honesty most highly in his dealings with Beale, whom he kept in line at the Waratahs. ‘When he came to the Waratahs i never claimed i was going to be his social worker, i’m just a rugby coach,’ said cheika.
‘So it’s honesty, straightforwardness, directness, putting him exactly in the picture of what’s required and what’s not needed. and i’ve found that that works to get the best out of him and also a really good, honest relationship. ‘No one’s ever going to be 100 per cent perfect, me included, there’s no doubt there. But if you’re honest, more often than not, and it’s in the open then you can usually get a resolution,’ he said. Former leinster coach cheika said he will not try to interfere with australia’s long-standing policy of refusing to select overseas-based stars. That means the likes of Toulon pivot Matt Giteau will remain out of reach.

Another Daley dose of Rad news for Van gaal by DANiEL JONEs

Manchester United’s injury crisis deepened yesterday after it emerged striker radamel Falcao will be out for at least a fortnight with a new ailment and Daley Blind is set for a long spell on the sidelines. Falcao has had a difficult start to life at the club since his deadline-day loan move from Monaco and has scored only one goal so far. the 28-year-old has not played for United for a month because of a calf problem and the club confirmed his latest setback yesterday. ‘It is disappointing I can’t play but I have to be calm and recover because that is important to help the team when I return to the games,’ Falcao told United’s website. Manager Louis van Gaal is facing a severe shortage of players for tomorrow’s crucial match at arsenal after a damaging international break. the biggest casualty was midfielder Blind (pictured), who came off in the 20th minute of hol-
land’s 6-0 win over Latvia with a knee injury. Van Gaal said initial tests on the player’s left knee proved inconclusive and he will have another scan the week after next to determine how long he will be out for. the United boss said: ‘It is not so bad as the doctor thought but it shall be a long story, I believe, but not six months or something like that.’ Blind was one of five United players injured playing for their countries. Luke shaw felt a tight hamstring and groin while with england, with Van Gaal admitting: ‘shaw is a question mark.’ Michael carrick picked up a groin problem with roy hodgson’s men and is also a doubt for the emirates trip. however, angel di Maria and David de Gea, who suffered niggles while away with argentina and spain respectively, are fit to play.
LiverpooL’s hopes of bringing striker Divock origi back to Anfield in January rely on former club Lille being prepared to release the Belgium international from his loan spell. The reds signed the highly rated 19-year-old in the summer but part of the deal was a binding agreement to allow the forward to remain in France for one further season. if Liverpool had been given the option to bring origi into their squad in the summer they would have taken it and Daniel sturridge’s continued absence with a thigh injury has only highlighted the need for reinforcements up front. it is understood a fee of £5million – on top of the £10m Liverpool paid the French club for origi – might release him from his contract. Lille director Jean-Michel vandamme, though, has said a January move is ‘impossible’ and given the club are just four points above the Ligue 1 relegation zone, it seems unlikely they will budge.

swiss side back boss, sack dross IN SOMETHING of a twist to the usual tale bosses at Swiss club FC Grenchen, angered at the team’s 10-0 defeat, chose to keep the manager and sack the players instead. After a less than successful run which has seen the club accrue just five points from 14 league games and ship a mighty 80 goals with just ten in return, fingers were beginning to point at boss Patrick Boesch. However, in a move than has surprised many, the club have decided to back the coach and fire 11 of the first-team squad. Grenchen’s sporting director Renato Brun said: ‘It sounds brutal, but these players are not good enough for this league.’ An unrepentant Boesch said: ‘It works well and is not an issue.’

Schmidt: ‘Chris will be back’ by DAnny HOgAn
Joe Schmidt has backed chris henry to make a full recovery from his brain injury, and maybe even stake a claim for ireland action in the Six Nations. Ulster flanker henry suffered ‘a temporary blockage of a small blood vessel in his brain’ on the morning of ireland’s clash with South Africa on November 8. the 30-year-old is recuperating at home while still awaiting further tests to determine his exact situation, but may have suffered a mini-stroke. doubts have been raised about his ability to return to rugby, but ireland head coach Schmidt said he is ‘quietly confident’ henry will be back for club and country. ‘i really feel for chris: this time last year he got injured at this point and missed the two big southern hemisphere teams we played,’ said Schmidt. ‘the fact that he’s got some more tests to come,
i wouldn’t really like to comment. But i’d be quietly confident that chris will come through the other side. ‘i’d be very hopeful that he gets his boots back on; and there may even be time for him to do that before the Six Nations. the specialists will let us know a bit more once those tests come through.’ ireland medics initially diagnosed a virus on the morning of the Springboks clash before suspecting a severe migraine, but specialists have since determined a more unusual condition. henry now ‘needs further investigation and specialist opinion,’ according to an irish Rugby Football Union (iRFU) statement released this week. ‘chris henry suffered some weakness on the morning of the South Africa game and a viral illness was suspected, he recovered quickly and the initial diagnosis was of severe migraine,’ read the iRFU statement. ‘Further tests however have shown he suffered a temporary blockage of a small blood vessel in his brain. he is at home now and is well but needs further investigation and specialist opinion.’
McIlroy and Lowry share the lead in Dubai
World No.1 rory McIlroy made light of a six-week lay-off to claim a share of the lead in the season-ending dP World Tour Championship in dubai yesterday. McIlroy carded six birdies and no bogeys in a flawless 66 on the Earth Course at Jumeirah Golf Estates to finish alongside Shane lowry in the €6.4million event. That took the 25-year-old to an amazing 80 under par for his 21 rounds to date in this event, after previous finishes of third, fifth, 11th, first and fifth. McIlroy had not played
since finishing joint second in the Alfred dunhill links Championship in the first week of october. So it was perhaps no surprise that the four-time major winner had taken to Twitter earlier in the day to write: ‘Just under 3 hours until I hit my first competitive golf shot in 6 weeks. To say I’m excited is an understatement. £imready.’ McIlroy (left) certainly looked ready as he birdied four of his first five holes, the only aberration coming when he missed from eight feet on the third. lowry birdied four of the last six holes as he looked to make amends
for his collapse in the final round in Turkey on Sunday, when he eagled the fourth to claim a share of the lead only to triple bogey the next hole and make a double bogey on the sixth. ‘The whole day Sunday and the flight down here you’re thinking about it,’ lowry admitted. ‘It’s one of those things. But I gave myself a chance to win last week. If I can give myself a chance to win again this week, maybe I’ll do it.’ McIlroy said: ‘It was a great way to start and it probably should have been five birdies in five holes to be honest. You never expect to start like that, but I’ve been hitting the ball well for the last couple of weeks.’
