€35,000 for boy’s trampoline injury
A BOY who fell through a trampoline and broke his leg has been awarded €35,000 after his parents sued the shop that sold it to them. Kevin Stokes, five, was playing on the trampoline – bought at Smyths Toys, Fonthill, Clondalkin – when his leg went into a gap between the base and the frame. He was taken to the emergency department of Our Lady’s Children’s Hospital in Crumlin, where X-rays revealed a
Youngster broke leg in fall through gap fracture to his tibia and fibula. His barrister, Ivan Daly, told Circuit Court president Mr Justice Raymond Groarke Kevin’s right leg was placed in a ‘back slab cast’. The fractures had been manipulated a few days later and his leg was placed in an above-the-knee cast. He was then discharged home in a

wheelchair. Counsel said Kevin’s cast was removed a month after the accident in July 2012, and further X-rays showed the fracture had fully healed. The boy, who is now seven, needed to use a walking frame for several weeks. Kevin, of Esker Drive, Lucan, felt pain in his leg for several months after the accident and he was unable to play with his friends. Through his mother, Margaret Stokes, he sued Smyths Toys for negligence. The court heard a forensic engineer had examined the trampoline and was of the opinion that the method used for securing the safety pad was inadequate. Mr Daly told the judge, who had previously refused a settlement offer of €25,000 made on behalf of the store, that an increased offer of €35,000 had been made. The judge, hearing Kevin had made a good recovery, approved the offer.

EMpLOYMENT has risen by more than 10,000 in the last quarter. The latest survey from the Central Statistics Office reveals unemployment dropped by almost half a per cent from 11.5 per cent in June to 11.1 per cent at the end of September. Employment is now at its highest level in five years. It means an additional 10,400 people are now in jobs. Jobs Minister Richard Bruton said: ‘These figures show that the jobs recovery is deepening and broadening across the country.’
families flee house blaze
A hEAvILY pregnant woman was among those forced to flee a fire which threatened to engulf the lower levels of a Dublin apartment block yesterday morning. Five units from Dublin City Fire Brigade raced to the scene after the alarm was raised at Abbey Glen on the Johnstown Road in Cabinteely at around 5.42am. None of the residents of the block was injured as the fire, which started in the underground car park. The building has since been deemed safe for families to return home.

Love all... as ace Murray finally pops the question

Love match: After Wimbledon win
What’s the story? Liam in the pub when he’s ‘sick’ BAD boy rocker Liam Gallagher claimed he was ‘too ill’ to attend court over support payments for his love child – but was spotted in the pub a day later. The former Oasis singer was due to be quizzed about his finances in New York last week but allegedly skipped the hearing – telling lawyers he was sick, so couldn’t fly to the US. But it appears the 42-year-old (pictured) made a swift recovery – as he was seen drinking at The Angel Inn pub, in Highgate, north London, on Saturday, according to the New York Post. Gallagher is locked in a legal row with ex-mistress Liza Ghorbani, the mother of his 22-month-old daughter Gemma, over child support payments. He had an affair with her in 2011, while married to All Saints singer Nicole Appleton, 39. Gallagher’s lawyer, Raoul Felder, said a new hearing is scheduled for next week and the rocker ‘will attend’.
by NICOLE LE MARIE TENNIS star Andy Murray is engaged to long-time love Kim Sears, it was announced yesterday. The former Wimbledon champion popped the question to his partner of eight years with a diamond ring, a source close to the couple said. They are said to be enjoying their engagement before they start making plans for their big day. ‘Andy spent ages thinking about the ring. He chose the design himself and picked it up last week... he then proposed on Wednesday,’ a source said. ‘Kim said “yes” immediately. They are completely besotted with each other and have been there for each other through thick and thin.’ The 27-year-old star’s family – including his mum Judy, who took part in this year’s Strictly Come Dancing – are said to be overjoyed by the news. Last night Murray flew to the Philippines to play in the International Premier Tennis League but made no hint at the news, tweeting: ‘Anyone got suggestions for a first time tourist
Kiss: Celebrating Olympic gold medal in Manila?’ Ms Sears, 26, who works as an artist, and Murray, who is worth €55million, met at the US Open in 2005. They split briefly five years ago. Her face has become familiar to tennis fans worldwide as she cheers on the Scot from the stands at tournaments. Recently, Murray said that he could not have won Wimbledon in 2013 if it hadn’t been for her support.
Christmas hell for grieving Kidman NICOLE KIDMAN says her family faces a rough Christmas after a ‘terrible’ year that saw her father die of a heart attack. The star, who lost dad Antony in September, said the family will be ‘holding tight to each other’ through the festivities. Kidman, 47, also told Good Morning Britain she and husband Keith Urban ‘work hard to keep their relationship deep and intimate.’

‘Housing needed now’ by bRiAn HuTTOn Thousands of families threatened with homelessness cannot wait years for the Government’s promise to build more homes, a leading charity has warned. Threshold said the coalition’s vow to construct 35,000 homes for those most in need over the next six years will come too late for many. Bob Jordan, chief executive of the national housing charity, said there are 90,000 families on waiting lists for social housing as a result of funding cuts in recent years. ‘There are thousands of families throughout Ireland with a housing need right now,’ he said. ‘In some cases, these families are experiencing, or facing, homelessness. They cannot afford to wait for two or more years while the Government gets new social housing construction under way. They need assistance right now.’ Environment Minister alan Kelly said his €3.8billion social housing strategy 2020 would aim to have 18,000 homes for those on waiting lists built by the end of 2017. another 17,000 would be completed by 2020. under the plan, another 75,000 families would be housed in private rented accommodation, organised by local authorities, through the housing assistance Payment and Rental accommodation scheme. It is expected 29,000 jobs would be created during the construction phase. a separate task force will be set up to focus on social housing in dublin.

n DarYL MaHon, 31, has a cuppa to celebrate after his family moved into their new home off the north Circular road. Daryl had been sleeping on a friend’s couch for the past nine months in order to save a deposit for a house. It meant he was unable to live with his two young children. The formerly derelict Dublin City Council house was renovated by charity Habitat for Humanity and Mr Mahon will pay a small mortgage on the property, the first of two in a project to provide affordable housing.
EU bankers set to snub bank inquiry EuropEan central bankers will snub an oireachtas inquiry into the banking collapse, despite forcing Ireland into its bailout. Irish Central Bank governor patrick Honohan (below), who is also a member of the European Central Bank’s governing council, said his colleagues in Frankfurt were ‘not really concerned’ with Ireland. under cross-examination by an oireachtas watchdog, Mr Honohan said he would not be asking ECB president Mario Draghi to turn up for the hearings as there was no point. ‘I gather they are not minded to attend,’ he said. Mr Honohan also admitted new mortgage deposit rules coming in next year could make it harder for first-time buyers to get on the prop-erty ladder. But he denied it would cause social inequality.

With frazzled parents going to war in a bid to get their hands on the Frozen Elsa doll for their little girls this Christmas, kEn ROgAn asks if this is all just harmless fun or a blatant act of gender stereotyping
I
S Love worth fighting for? Is it worth dying for? And is it worth queuing for? All of these things might be necessary if you are to obtain this year’s parent-oppressing musthave gift, the singing princess elsa doll from the hit movie Frozen. That’s right, your little treasure wants to be a blonde ice princess. Leaving aside how ominous that sounds, this is because Frozen is pure, uncut emotional cocaine for seven-year-old girls who sort of convulse when cartoon princesses with magical powers come on screen. But the dealers are keeping it tight. Word on the street is you can’t buy this doll for love nor money, but maybe, just maybe, Ryan Tubridy will announce on the Toy Show tomorrow night that Santa Claus will *phew* rush a shipment to us just in time to make our frothing, frenzied parents shell out €45 to copper-fasten the sort of gender stereotyping that will
keep feminist issues alive and well into the next century. And so to the question: Is it still gender stereotyping if they love it? Is that still bad? Because they absolutely love it. My niece has a mild seizure when Frozen comes on, and what are you supposed to tell them, that it’s bad for you? That this is a cultural Big Mac: delicious beyond imagining, but insanely unhealthy? Perhaps this is a feature of cultural poisons, which are in fact like fatty mind sugar that you can’t stop gobbling down in the form of X Factor, or Big Brother, or I’m A Celebrity, Put Me In A Jungle Shower – I mean, what’s going on there? Kids are going to grow up thinking plumbing is a type of tropical tree, and that showering is an employable skill, as is looking like a toy doll. I have a particularly difficult relationship with blonde toy dolls what with my name being Ken. For as long as I have been drawing breath, people have been saying, ‘hey Ken – where’s Barbie?’ and this
things for the feminist cause that devastating insult has haunted my Princess elsa does for the next whole life. I’m still defenceless generation, when he stars in the against it. I don’t know where phenomenon that is 50 Shades of Barbie is, or why I’m supposed to Shenanigans. how do you even know, like I own Barbie or something – like she’s mine. except explain that – the world going mental for something that craps on of course, Ken is really Barbie’s equality, and promotes submissive plaything, isn’t he? Where’s all the sex slavery as a thrill, as though outrage about that?! betraying feminism, however Also, and FYI, for a few years briefly, has the same appeal or there Barbie dumped Ken and badness of a Big Mac? started carrying on with the Compounding the lump of surfer beef confusion, 50 Shades called Blaine. It was written by ‘eL’ didn’t last. And it James, which is a didn’t prevent Frozen is pure, uncut pseudonym, and ‘where’s Barbie?’ emotional cocaine for also an example coming my way of that ‘initials’ either, but then seven-year-old girls trick publishers attempting to who convulse when it pull when they correct the record want to hide a entailed appears on screen female author’s verbalising the name for fear of romantic history of a discouraging male toy, which is several readers. You know, like TS orders of magnitude more pathetic than not being able to trump eliot, or WB Yeats, or The Notorious BIG. ‘where’s Barbie?’ for 36 years. Mostly what I’d like to do to Real names are much more Barbie is tie her up and kill her, not straightforward. Brian McFadden, has a girlfriend called vogue, and unlike Jamie Dornan’s character in The Fall, and he coincidentally is a perhaps one day they’ll have a child grown-up doll that makes grown-up called vanity Fair, whereas my own girls all frothy and mad with feral future kids will be called Rolling desire. A mAssive haul of cannabis worth €4.5m – which had been stuffed into more than 1,000 tins of olives and was bound for the UK – has been uncovered in Dublin. Customs officials seized the drugs at Dublin Port after a profiling operation targeting cargo at the facility. The 200kg of cannabis was divided into small parcels which were double vacuum packed and individually stashed in 1,050 catering tins of olives in oil (pictured below). investigating officers believe the drugs arrived from spain and were destined for the UK. A Revenue spokeswoman said: ‘investigations are continuing here with international enquiries ongoing in spain and the UK.’ The concealment of the drugs was so sophisticated that the drug smugglers would have had to use a canning factory to stash each of the 200g waterproof parcels in the sealed tins. The smell of the olives was enough to put a drug detection dog at Dublin Port off the scent. michael Gilligan, irish Revenue’s head of central investigations, said it was a very sophisticated standard of concealment that indicated the level of the crime gang behind it.
gamers urged to join war on homophobia

The computer gaming industry has been urged to promote tolerance and inclusiveness in its games in an effort to curb homophobia and bigotry. It comes as research shows the online community ‘self-regulates’ against misogyny and anti-gay comments in gaming forums. Research from Lancaster University said those exposed to ‘different ideas surrounding sexuality were less likely to use homophobic language themselves’, and were more likely to censure others who did. Amanda Potts, a researcher at the university’s eSRC Centre for Corpus Approaches to Social Science, analysed the language used in chatrooms for the videogame Minecraft.
by RyAn HOOpER
She said: ‘In video game forums, there is sometimes an expectation that community members share certain qualities (like being straight and male) and agree upon quite narrow conceptions of identity. ‘I found that when popular channel producers uploaded gaming
‘The industry needs to promote tolerance’ videos that depicted unexpected relationships between men, viewers and subscribers of the channel became more accepting and tolerant. What you ended up with was a community that
self-policed against homophobia. ‘When powerful people, in this case the video producers who are revered by their young fans, use language that promotes tolerance and inclusiveness, there is a trickledown effect where young people begin to avoid homophobic language themselves.’ She added: ‘If game producers don’t take the lead in working against harassment, then it is much harder for communities to organise themselves positively and powerfully. ‘Not creating and promoting an inclusive environment as a producer leads to a lack of inclusiveness.’ The research was based on more than 210,000 comments by Minecraft users.

Mendes: Nights as new mum are as wild as ever... But the actress says her baby has a tougher time of it
Eva MEndEs says the party is far from over after explaining how she has had some of her ‘wildest nights’ yet with tenweek-old daughter Esmeralda amada Gosling. ‘I’m completely exhausted,’ said the 40-year-old. ‘I thought my wild nights were over but these are some of the wildest I’ve ever had.’ However, the Hitch star says she knows being a mum is way easier than being a baby. ‘For instance, I haven’t thrown up since the 1990s and she’s thrown up twice since we started this interview. Motherhood is a piece of cake compared to what it’s like to be a baby.’
and Mendes is adamant about doing things the old fashioned way. ‘as far as a nanny or a night nurse, for me that part of being a mother at this early stage is the struggle of not being able to sleep and not knowing what I’m doing and really going through it with her and battling out those nights. ‘I cannot believe that by the time my mother was 24 she had three kids under the age of four. she was in

Cuba and totally alone. so when it’s the wee hours of the night and I’m feeling a bit insane, I think about her and realise that I have no right to complain about anything.’ Mendes also explained her and boyfriend Ryan Gosling’s choice of names. ‘We both love the Esmeralda character from the classic victor Hugo novel The Hunchback of notre dame and amada was my grandmother’s name. It means “beloved” in spanish which is very appropriate.’

Defiant killer officer insists: I was right to gun down unarmed teen
Shooter: Wilson Picture: ABc
THE police officer who killed Michael Brown yesterday defended his actions, insisting: ‘I know I did my job right.’ In his first public comments since shooting the unarmed 18-year-old (pictured) on August 8, Darren Wilson told ABC News he could not have acted differently. He said he had ‘never wanted to take anybody’s life’ and told Mr Brown’s parents ‘I’m sorry that their son lost his life’. Mr Wilson described the teenager’s aggression
during the shooting in Ferguson as ‘almost unfathomable’. ‘The only emotion I ever felt was fear and then it was survival and training,’ he added of the confrontation. Mr Wilson said it was his duty to chase the teenager, who he shot seven times. When asked about witness accounts that Mr Brown had turned towards him and put his hands up, he replied ‘that would be incorrect’. Under Missouri law, police can act with deadly force when they believe it is necessary to arrest a person who may ‘endanger life or inflict serious physical injury’.

Fury spreads across the US as protesters take to the streets in 170 cities
Masked: A woman protests in Los Angeles
FURIOUS protests against the decision not to charge a white police officer who killed an unarmed black youth spread across more than 170 US cities. Scores of arrests were made as people in cities such as New York, Los Angeles and Atlanta held protests on Tuesday, with many brandishing ‘black lives matter’ signs. A police car was set alight and shop fronts were vandalised in Oakland, California, as the demonstrations escalated. But the chaos didn’t match the widespread rioting, looting and arson that took place on Monday, sparked by the grand jury decision not to charge officer Darren Wilson over the death of 18-year-old Michael Brown.

Victim’s parents ‘don’t believe a word’ of policeman’s story THE parents of Michael Brown don’t believe Darren Wilson’s story that their son was the aggressor in the deadly shooting that has sparked months of protests. Speaking to CBS This Morning, Michael Brown Sr and Lesley McSpadden said they believe Wilson was lying about what occurred during his confrontation with Michael Brown. ‘I know my son far too well, he would never do anything like that,’ Ms McSpadden said. ‘He would never provoke anyone to do anything to him and he wouldn’t do anything to anybody. ‘I don’t believe a word of it.’ Elsewhere, calling for peaceful protests, Mr Brown Sr said the decision not to prosecute showed he lived in a ‘racist state’.

The National Guard tripled its numbers in the St Louis suburb of Ferguson, from 700 to 2,200 in response to Monday night’s violence. And police took to loudspeakers in the riot-scarred streets of the Missouri town, ordering protesters to leave or face arrest. Two FBI agents were shot during a raid on a man barricated into a house near the heart of the Ferguson demonstrations. However, it was ‘not directly’ related to the protests, the FBI said. Garth Brooks cancelled a Thanksgiving appearance on NBC’s Tonight show because he said it ‘seemed distasteful’ after the decision not to prosecute.

Student’s final moments captured on phone – before he was killed by bear
Savaged: Darsh Patel (inset)
HE tHougHt he was standing at a safe distance, but these shocking images show the last moments of a man’s life. Darsh Patel and his four friends ignored warnings from two other hikers and continued down a trail to see a 300lb black bear. It was a fatal mistake. the group tried to walk away calmly, but the bear pursued them. It got within 40ft and then they ran for their lives.
Mr Patel, 22, was not quick enough and was mauled to death. Police, who found the bear standing over his corpse before they shot it dead, released these photographs from the Rutgers university student’s smartphone. His trousers and socks were found in the undergrowth and even his phone had puncture marks. the attack occurred on September 21 in the Apshawa Preserve, New Jersey.

Based on John Carney’s 2007 film, with a book by Enda Walsh, this quirky love story is unfailingly tasteful and a tad bland. But John Tiffany’s deft production has a devoted following. Can the blue-eyed boy of pop pull it off? Fans – of the man and the musical – will be relieved to hear he can. Keating has a rumpled, lowkey sexiness, and a seasoned performer’s natural ease of movement on stage. He has a locked-in quality and quiet misery that he gradually sheds under the influence of Jill Winternitz’s plain-speaking Girl. Vocally, too, he impresses – his delivery is appealingly rough-edged when emotion demands but soars where it should, and his Irish accent adds texture. It’s an assured debut that should see the musical’s admirers taking this Guy to their hearts.
Far from a Highway to Hell – AC/DC star’s ‘fun’ court date
AC/DC DRuMMER Phil Rudd may be facing seven years in prison, but he looked as if he didn’t have a care in the world when he appeared in court yesterday. First, he ticked off the judge by turning up late, then drummed a rhythm on the dock and winked and smiled at reporters throughout the hearing. the 60-year-old is charged with threatening to kill as well as possessing methamphetamine and marijuana. Allegations that Rudd tried to hire a hitman to kill two people were earlier dropped by prosecutors due to a lack of evidence. Rudd did not
enter a plea during his brief appearance in tauranga, New Zealand. He was bailed and told to return to court next tuesday – the same day AC/DC’s new album Rock or Bust is due to be released. His departure from the courthouse was as bizarre as his entrance. He took a piggyback ride to his car courtesy of a burly security guard and, in his bid for a quick getaway, reversed into the path of an oncoming lorry – narrowly avoiding a crash. Rudd’s future with Australian band AC/DC hangs in the balance.

New Garda chief must be given a chance to earn trust
W
hen referring to the remarks of ex-garda John Wilson on the appointment of the new Garda Commissioner in yesterday’s front page, why not also include the positive comments of many others apart from the Justice Minister? For example, those optimistic remarks of Sergeant Maurice McCabe, who played an instrumental role in bringing certain issues concerning An Garda Síochána to light. Why bother offering a balanced view though? nothing beats a bit of negativity in Ireland these days. In any event, what matters most is that the person appointed to the position acknowledges the need for Garda reform and does their absolute best to bring it about and earn the trust and co-operation of the public. having already done the former, let’s give nóirín O’Sullivan more than one day in the job to do the latter. I for one wish her the very best of luck. Anonymous
■ Obviously enda Kenny has not read Article nine of the eU Water Framework when blaming europe for pushing the water charges. Article 9.4 of the eU Water Framework states that Ireland is exempt from charging for domestic water. It states that ‘in Ireland all dwelling houses using water for ordinary purposes’ shall not be charged. This was a hard-fought battle by Bertie Ahern’s government in 2000 and as such cannot be changed by any government in this country without the agreement of its people. The Constitution of Ireland protects this when it states that: ‘All powers of government, legislative, executive and judicial, derive, under God, from the people, whose right it is to... decide all questions of national policy.’ hopefully the march on December 10 will finally drive home to you, Mr Kenny, that we will not pay. Where contemporary meets classic a look to Spring Summer at Marks and spencer Lorna Weightman got a peek at the new m&S range and says pop-on outfits that require little stress are the name of the game
I
simply stylish: autograph top, €47.50, and coulottes, €199
t’s a windy early morning in London. Drizzle fills the air with a low cloud shadowing a bumpy landing at Heathrow. But it’s okay, as I have spring on my mind: lightweight fabrics, the effervescent glow of summer colours and a new season of modern, yet classic silhouettes. Marks and spencer have upped their game over the last couple of seasons, and thanks to a sneak peek of their entire range each year, I have the chance to gather my thoughts on the collections ahead of
time. I’ve come to a conclusion that the ‘fashion’ which sells is the one that’s practical, works hard for us and caters for a trans-seasonal wardrobe. And that’s exactly what spring summer from M&s will do. Pop-on outfits that require little stress will be name of the game, and I applaud that approach. the spring summer womenswear collections are broken into five delightful stories. Into the Blue is dominated by the familiar blue wash of fresh denim and summertime casual favourites like cropped trousers, quilted denim jackets and swinging mid-length skirts. Uniformity is punctuated by utility and complemented by a neutral palette to create a new season go-to, effortless style. the linear, clean feel of this story pulls at my heartstrings as a wearable, chic collection, which will make for the perfectly balanced office wardrobe. Classic trench coats layered over a mocha jumpsuit, longer length skirts paired with sleeveless knits create a minimalist style. the Orient is one of the strongest lines for M&s next
season, thanks to well-constructed separates, simple styling and beautiful ornamental prints. the kimono will be a key piece; layered and belted over a matching top and skirt, or alternatively with wide legged white trousers. ‘Modern Romance’ is exactly that; embroidered dresses with floral motifs, sheer fabrics, full skirts and feminine features which always attract my attention for spring summer. Finally, summer of Love takes a trip through the seventies; flared jeans, a-line suede skirts and high, round necklines, as well as decade-appropriate prints with high-waisted trousers, make for a fashion forward, catwalk inspired collections. the one thing the new season at M&s does is cater for every taste possible; with an array of ranges such as Autograph and Limited Edition. It’s collaborations with high profile celebrities like Rosie Huntington-Whitely and David Gandy have perhaps led a new generation of customers to the retailer. But, I think the secret ingredient is impeccable design from fabric to finish. When the spring summer collection begins to trickle onto the shop floor come January, I have a feeling that you’ll agree.

My desert island reads
AlexAnder McCAll SMitH Alexander McCall Smith is a hugely prolific author, best known for his bestselling No.1 Ladies Detective Agency series featuring Botswana’s ‘only female private detective’, Precious Ramotswe. His most recent project is very different – a modern update of Jane Austen’s Emma.
WAtCH me: A memoir by AnJelICA HuSTon the Hollywood actress Anjelica Huston, from Wes Anderson films, the Addams family and the grifters? That’s the one. Huston is also the daughter of legendary director John Huston (The African Queen, The Asphalt Jungle and, as an actor, Noah Cross in Chinatown). Her partner for much of the 1970s and 1980s was another legendary LA player, Jack Nicholson, though for a period she went back and forth between him and Ryan O’Neal. so, she’s got great stories to tell? Absolutely. A first volume of her autobiography, A Story Lately Told, was published to critical acclaim last year. It recounted her growing up in a romantic mansion in rural Ireland, where international A-listers such as Peter O’Toole or Marlon Brando might drop by, and her teens in Swinging Sixties London – a period cut short by the sudden death of her glamorous mother, Rikki, in a car crash. This
book begins in 1973, when she came to LA via New York, where she had been working as a model. It is littered with famous names (from Lauren Bacall, Warren Beatty and Hunter S Thompson to Mick Jagger) and incidents (such as her 1977 arrest for possession of drugs after police searched Nicholson’s home following up an accusation that director Roman Polanski had sexually assaulted a minor there). Huston recounts the beating that persuaded her that she must leave O’Neal and is honest about how hurt she felt by Nicholson’s philandering. But she is no victim – it’s made plain she gave Nicholson the run-around too. She is also frank about her sadness at having never had children. Huston brings a fly-on-the-wall, female perspective to a hedonistic, creatively charged period in Hollywood when films were changing and so was the status of women, actors and the nature of celebrity. Time off was spent in
Aspen, Colorado with the fast set: ‘Everyone was getting high… coke and grass were ubiquitous… a choice that took a lot of people up and many down.’
does she write well? Yes, although sometimes the opulence of her jet-set circumstances makes
it almost laughably rich fare to digest. Huston is at her best when most emotionally naked, as when describing her father on his death bed, ‘weak and transparent as lace’. A class act. Patricia Nicol

If you can take only three books to a desert island, they must be substantial ones. WH Auden’s Collected Poems heads my list of books that would last a very long time. Auden had an immensely wide range and his remarkable, humane work never seems to fade.
sense And sensibility by JAne Austen
There would have to be one novel, and it would have to be by Jane Austen. She is an author who can be read and re-read, and her humour would keep one sane.
fAr As tHe eye CAn see by RobeRT bAuSCH
great contemporary Western novels are thin on the ground but robert bausch’s far As the eye Can see feels like an instant classic. bobby Hale, a Civil War veteran and serial deserter, heads west in search of his fortune – but he has little great ambition. buffeted by the war between the us army and the native Americans, he eventually ends up caring for a young woman and a boy as they flee the bloodshed. it’s a morally complex story of redemption and a reminder that life is never as simple as you’d like it to be. And, by jings, the central love story is a real doozy. Paul Connolly Bloomsbury, out now.
disContent And its CiViliZAtions by MoHSIn HAMId
As mohsin Hamid writes here, Pakistan ‘is a place where car bombs go off in crowded markets and beheadings get recorded in grainy video’. so why move there? Well, we can be glad Hamid did, for the the reluctant fundamentalist author captures the multiple Pakistans that exist beneath the version we tend to see. He ponders whether a bomb-proof window would conceal the view of a tree from his daughter’s bedroom and why Pakistan’s best hope of quashing extremism is to restore relations with india. Accessible, wise and beautifully clear. Claire Allfree Penguin, out today
HAlf tHe Kingdom by loRe SegAl
this quirky little novel is an intriguing blend of black farce and modern horror. it’s set in the er room of a manhattan hospital experiencing its own emergency: everyone who steps in over the age of 62 abruptly goes round the bend. it’s a premise ripe with metaphysical resonance and, at times, segal comes across as a bit like beckett with a flamboyant sense of humour. best of all is her prose style, which is full of clashing phrases and registers – and a structural randomness entirely in keeping with its subject matter. Strange stories from the world of sport
He’s a bit sheepish
The Hennessy Gold Cup will be shown live on Channel 4 on Saturday
Race history beckons for gold cup boy barry BARRY GERAGHTY bids to create history on Saturday as the first jockey to win the Hennessy Gold Cup three years in a row. Victories on Bobs Worth and Triolo D’Alene have put the 35-year-old alongside Pat Taaffe, John Francome and Paul Nicholls as the only pilots with back-toback wins.
‘This is not a job, it’s more a labout of love’ Geraghty is no stranger to success, having claimed the Grand National on Monty’s Pass in 2003 and at least one winner at the Cheltenham Festival for the past 12 years. The Hennessy at Newbury is a key indicator as to how the National Hunt
by DAnny gRIffITHs season will pan out and Geraghty said: ‘It’s special to have won it twice in a row but the thought of winning it three years in succession is quite something. ‘It is a great race, a terrific breeding ground for horses to go on and win major races at big meetings like Kempton and Cheltenham and there is another very strong field.’ Geraghty (pictured) rides for Nicky Henderson and will either renew his partnership with Triolo D’Alene or climb aboard Hadrian’s Approach. He added: ‘It’s not a job, more a labour of love. It’s fantastic riding for Nicky as well. He is selective about which races his horses run in and he is a man who goes about his work with a real passion.’

would ‘love’ to captain Europe in the Ryder Cup in the future. The 38-year-old has been an inspirational figure for Europe, most notably when he inspired a brilliant comeback at Medinah in 2012. Poulter said: ‘Hopefully, I’ve got another ten years in me before I get asked. If I was ever asked to be captain then yes, I’d love to be.’ Europe will soon appoint a new captain for Hazeltine in 2016 and Darren Clarke is among the favourites. Poulter said: ‘He has got a great relationship with the players and would be a very worthy captain.’

arsenal put their Premier league woes to one side last night to book their place in the knockout stages of the Champions league. The Gunners, currently 15 points behind leaders Chelsea after their worst start in the top flight for more than 30 years, made sure of their place in the last 16 of the competition thanks to a goal in either half from Yaya sanogo and alexis sanchez. Jurgen gen Klopp’s Klopp’ side shunned the hi-tech training facilities available in the capital and headed to regent’s egen Park for an early morning stretch and to work on a few set-pieces. clean sheet for liverpool in their last 11 champions league games
LIVERPOOL’S pride was damaged by a late goal in Sofia last night but they still control their Champions League destiny. The Reds were just two minutes away from victory when Ludogorets grabbed a deserved equaliser through Georgi Terziev. Despite having to settle for a draw, Liverpool can still qualify for the knockout stages if they win their final group game at home to Basle a week on Tuesday. The match had started as badly as it finished for the Merseysiders as they fell behind in just the third minute following a bad mistake from goalkeeper Simon Mignolet. He failed to hold on to a shot from

Marcelinho, allowing Dani Abalo to nip in and add to the goal he scored in the 2-1 defeat at Anfield. Liverpool, though, were back on level terms five minutes later when Rickie Lambert pounced on a lapse in the Ludogorets defence to head in from close range. The equaliser did little to dent the home side’s confidence and Kolo Toure nearly conceded an own goal before Mignolet flapped at a free-kick as the Bulgarians pushed forward. Liverpool went ahead in the 37th minute when Jordan Henderson turned in Raheem Sterling’s cross at the far post and the winger should have wrapped it up late in the second half when clean through. That miss proved to be costly as the Reds’ defence buckled under pressure as Terziev denied them victory.

The Seagulls sit 20th in the table ahead of the visit of Fulham on Saturday and under-fire Hyypia has pulled off a coup in landing Bent, who has been capped 13 times by England. The 30-year-old decided to drop down a division on an initial one-month deal after being a bit-part player with Villa this season. Hyypia said: ‘We are delighted to welcome Darren to the club and I hope he will score plenty of goals for us during his time here. His record speaks for itself. He is a top-class striker.’ Bent became Villa’s record signing when he joined them from Sunderland for £18million in 2011.

Grob: Mignolet is worse than Dracula the pressure was on Liverpool goalkeeper Simon Mignolet even before last night with Reds legend Bruce Grobbelaar criticising the Belgian’s form. Mignolet, who has struggled this season, was at fault again in Bulgaria, hours after Grobbelaar said he was partly to blame for the club dropping into the bottom half of the Premier League. ‘he doesn’t command his area,’ said the 57-year-old. ‘Yes, he is a great shot-stopper. I was
slaughtered last year by Liverpool fans who said I was too harsh on him. I’m not being too harsh on him. Not at all.
‘he seems to stay on his line and that’s it’ ‘I’ve likened Mignolet to worse than Dracula because at least Dracula comes out of his coffin now and then. he seems to stay on his line and that’s it.
the whole area, not just the sixyard area, is the goalkeeper’s.’ Grobbelaar feels the goals of Luis Suarez last season papered over Mignolet’s deficiencies and believes manager Brendan Rodgers could be sacked by Christmas if he does not turn Liverpool’s fortunes around. ‘If he doesn’t do anything in another three weeks, I think the Americans [owners] could do something about it,’ he said. ‘I have always backed Brendan but I am starting to slip away.’
STOkE winger Victor Moses is set for at least six weeks out with a thigh injury, the club have announced. The 23-yearold has enjoyed a fine loan spell from Chelsea this season but was injured in the weekend defeat to Burnley and will now not feature until the new year. ‘At the moment we’re deciding with Chelsea whether he goes back and has rehab or stays with our team,’ said Potters assistant boss Mark Bowen.

Sanogo strikes: Arsenal striker Yaya celebrates after opening the scoring at the Emirates last night
Wenger through again as gunners down Dortmund ARSENE WENGER had the last laugh following suggestions Jurgen Klopp could replace him as Arsenal boss by reaching the Champions League’s last 16 for the 15th year in a row. The Borussia Dortmund boss may have emerged as favourite to replace under-fire Wenger (pictured), but he didn’t feel at home at the Emirates Stadium for long last night. Yaya Sanogo scored his first goal for the Gunners after just 75 seconds before Alexis Sanchez lashed in a

While there was relief for Wenger, there was more misery for Brendan Rodgers as Liverpool were held 2-2 at Ludogorets. AuSTRAliA batsman Phillip Hughes remains in a critical condition after being struck on the head by a bouncer in a Sheffield Shield match. There was no change to Hughes’ condition yesterday, after the 25-year-old had emergency surgery before being put on life support on Tuesday. ‘Phillip’s condition is unchanged and he remains critical,’ said a short statement from Australian team doctor Peter Brukner.
