New powers to crack down on drink and drug-driving will be rigorously enforced, new Garda Commissioner Nóirín O’Sullivan has warned. Blood samples can be taken from incapacitated or unconscious drivers without their consent, under laws which come into effect today. Under the procedure, the driver will be asked to consent to the sample being tested once he or she is in a fit state to respond. But they will be guilty of an offence if they refuse. The Government said the new rule closed a loophole, ensuring all drivers involved in serious collisions would be tested for drink or drugs, and would act as a deterrent. Gardaí also have new powers to test motorists they suspect of being under the influence of drugs. These include asking a driver to walk in a straight line, turn around, stand on one leg and touch their nose with their finger. They can also take evidence about a suspect’s pupil dilation.

Liz O’Donnell, chairwoman of the Road Safety Authority, said: ‘Up to now, the research is that many drugdrivers see little risk of apprehension. They can actually delude themselves to be better drivers while under the influence of drugs and imagine themselves at low risk of collision.’ Road deaths have increased in Ireland over the last two years after several years of decline. Some 179 people have been killed on the roads already this year compared to 172 deaths over the same period last year.

Coma mum wakes thinking it’s 1996 and she is just 22 by ERin kERR
A CAR crash survivor who woke up thinking it was the 1990s and with no memory of her young daughter has met and thanked the firefighters who saved her life. Candace Emptage came out of a six-week coma thinking Princess Diana was still alive and the Spice Girls were top of the charts. When she was told she had a daughter, the 40-year-old former model stared in disbelief. ‘I thought I was about 22,’ she said. ‘I still cannot remember my childhood, going to school or my oldest friends.’ Ms Emptage nearly died after she lost control of her Toyota MR2 and crashed into an ambulance near Gateshead, Tyne and Wear, UK, in 2010. She pulled through but her brain injuries meant that when she woke up she had no memory after 1996. ‘Eventually an image of my daugh-
ter Maddie, who was 14, came back to me, but as a tiny little girl of about two,’ said Ms Emptage, of Burnopfield, Co Durham. ‘When she came to the hospital I had no idea who she was. I still have no memories of her before the crash.’ Now Candace has met the men and women of Swalwell fire station in Gateshead who cut her from her car. ‘I wanted to say thank you. I owe them my life,’ she added.

Christmas FM back to spread festive cheer FESTIVE fever will be ramped up a notch this week with the return of the volunteer-led Christmas FM tomorrow. The charity and Chrimbo-centric station will broadcast the usual feast of festive music as well as Christmas-related information in the run-up to Christmas. It’s all to raise awareness and funds for its chosen charity this year, Age Action Ireland. Chief executive of the Broadcasting Authority of Ireland, Michael O’Keefe, said: ‘We are delighted to provide a temporary licence to Christmas FM again this year. It has been hugely popular since it was first launched in 2008.’ The station will broadcast between 7am and midnight from tomorrow until December 27 in Dublin, Limerick, Cork, Galway city, and parts of Waterford, Wexford, Kilkenny and Tipperary. Christmas FM is also available on mobile and online. In 2013, Christmas FM launched a second music-driven online only station, Classic Christmas FM. It broadcasts all year round and is available on christmasfm.com, the Christmas FM mobile apps and TuneIn.

Sinn Féin figure held over killing

Fury in Dáil over Burton abuse claim THE DÁIL had to be suspended on three occasions yesterday after Tánaiste Joan Burton referred to a ‘problem of paedophilia and sex abuse’ within the republican movement. The comments incensed Sinn Féin members, who accused the Labour TD of making ‘defamatory’ remarks and linking an alleged sex abuser with the party. As a result of the angry response, Ceann Comhairle Seán Barrett was forced to call a halt to proceedings in the house three times in just under an hour. The incident occurred after a question was directed by Sinn Féin deputy leader
‘we know there’s been a problem of paedophilia’ Mary Lou McDonald at Ms Burton. She questioned whether the Department of Justice was delaying the publication of a Garda investigative file into allegations of sexual abuse by Irish language teacher Domhnall Ó Lubhlaí. Responding to the query, Ms Burton said that Mr Ó Lubhlaí had links of

A renowned republican was arrested yesterday over the murder of Jean McConville. Sinn Féin’s Bobby Storey, 58, was detained in Antrim town as part of the ‘overall investigation’ into the crime, officers said. He was later released pending a report to prosecutors. As well as the murder of the widow in 1972, police are investigating linked alleged offences, including IrA declarations of the killing. Mrs McConville was abducted, interrogated and shot after being accused of informing British security forces. The mother-of-ten’s body was found in 2003. Sinn Féin leader Gerry Adams was arrested in April over the crime but was later released. Arrest: Bobby Storey picture: pa

She added: ‘We know from the discussion previously and the acknowledgements by your party, that in fact there has been a problem of paedophilia and sex abuse, particularly of children, in the republican movement and cover-ups.’ Following the remarks, Sinn Féin TD Aengus Ó Snodaigh was one of a number of TDs who refused to remain seated. He accused the speaker of being ‘biased’ for not allowing a response. Dáil business was subsequently suspended for ten minutes while the Ceann Comhairle checked records of what had been said. On his return, Mr Barrett said he was satisfied that ‘no allegation was made against the Sinn Féin party’. With a number of Sinn Féin deputies again refusing to resume their seats the house was suspended a further two times before resuming. Sinn Féin is expected to lodge a complaint with the Committee on Procedure and Privileges.
tD in online ‘moron’ storm FINE GAEL TD Alan Farrell has been criticised for labelling a Twitter user a ‘moron’. The brief social media spat began when David Kenny (@Garathon66) responded to an image posted by the Fine Gael deputy about unemployment. The Fine Gaelwatermarked graph purported to show the latest unemployment figure of 10.9 per cent – its lowest in five years – but it had no figures on one of its axes. Mr Kenny criticised the lack of detail in the graph, saying: ‘And what’s the chart supposed to illustrate? Ice-cap size plotted against a number of pirates? Utter nonsense.’
A number of others chimed in with their own criticisms, including Today FM’s Gavan Reilly. However, it was the politics graduate who seemed to have provoked the ire of the Dublin-based politician. In a tweet, Mr Farrell (pictured) said: ‘Yes, of course you are right. A circa 25 per cent reduction in unemployment since taking office is nonsense. Moron.’ Mr Kenny said the remark smacked of ‘arrogance’, adding: ‘I don’t think it’s fitting behaviour for an public representative who sits in the Dáil.’ The Dubliner said he had contacted Fine Gael over the insult but had yet to receive an apology.

EU targets Google over ‘abuse of position’ EuropEan union institutions are piling pressure on Google to change the way it operates. The European parliament has approved a non-binding resolution that calls for the unbundling of search engines from other services internet companies offer. Eu antitrust authorities are currently investigating Google to see whether it is abusing its position following allegations it is biased in linking search results to its own services. The resolution could in theory lead to the break-up of giant internet companies like Google.
Campaign: EU digital economy chief Guenther Oettinger Eu digital economy commissioner Guenther oettinger underscored the resolution is ‘an important expression of opinion’, but he added the Eu is far from tearing digital multinationals apart.
‘I don’t think, at the end of the day, that the breaking up as such is what we can expect,’ Mr oettinger said. ‘rather we are talking about the consistent and correct implementation of Eu legislation to ensure that the interests’ of Eu businesses and consumers are maintained. Meanwhile, an Eu data protection group advised ‘the right to be forgotten’ rule that requires Google to delete upon request information that unfairly tarnishes an individual’s reputation should be expanded from addresses like .de and .fr to the general .com domains.

DUBLIN BUS may soon be a ticketless service if transport technology continues to develop at its current rate. It was just one of the projections made by Transport Minister Paschal Donohoe as he mapped out a ‘more responsive’ and ‘passenger-friendly’ future for travel. Speaking at the Transport Payments 2020 Conference, he said: ‘The whole area of transport payments is developing at a rate few of us would have envisaged even a few years ago. ‘In the last five years we have moved from coins to the Leap card and in the next five years we may be presenting our bank cards to pay for journeys. Soon after that our payments will probably be done using our mobile phones. I note that all bus services in London are now completely cashless. This will probably happen in Ireland at some point.’ Since its introduction in 2011, the Government has been encouraging wider use of the Leap card by offering subsidised travel on bus, light and heavy rail routes. And new technology is in devel-
opment to advance the card’s ‘evolution’, Mr Donohoe said. ViX – a payment solutions provider – has been contracted by the NTA to create an app enabling card users to remotely top-up by holding it close to their smartphone. Passengers would also be able to check their balance in real-time. A number of new transport infrastructures are also under review, including a rapid bus lane system and the Dart Underground.
Radical new transport infrastructure is on way ‘To help us plan for the future a number of studies are currently being undertaken. These reviews will assess the short, medium and long-term rail transport requirement of the capital and will look particularly at the North Dublin corridor which is located in one of the fastest growing regions in the country,’ Mr Donohoe added. A re-signalling of Irish Rail is also set to be completed by mid-2016.
‘Click and collect’ back on track TESCO has teamed up with Luas in a reincarnation of its ‘click and collect’ shopping service. The service, which will be free of charge, allows customers to do their shopping online, choose a two-hour collection window and collect their groceries at either the Red Cow or Stillorgan Luas stops. Tesco said all products
purchased will be picked on the day of collection and safely stored until the customer arrives to collect. A Tesco employee will hold the groceries at a dedicated collection point until the customer arrives to collect. Tesco said the turnaround time for a collection is expected to be less than five minutes.
A Tesco Ireland spokeswoman said this new service would benefit park and ride Luas customers in particular, while Luas marketing manager Cara Moloney said that the service would ‘help provide time-strapped passengers with an even better travel experience’. The service will operate seven days a week.

THE Government has published a new sexual offences bill which proposes a wide range of reforms aimed at protecting children from sexual exploitation, child pornography and online grooming. Measures to criminalise the purchase of sexual services are also included. Sanctions for the new offences include both fines and prison sentences of up to 14 years. The bill also includes measures to strengthen post-release supervision and monitoring of sex offenders, including a new requirement on sex
offenders to provide fingerprints, palm prints and photographs if requested by gardai. The age of consent is to remain at 17 under the new legislation but a ‘proximity clause’ will be introduced that won’t criminalise ‘nonexploitative, consensual sexual relationships between peers where there is no more than two years in age difference between both parties’. The new bill also criminalises the purchasing rather than sale of sexual services, with a more serious offence of purchasing a sexual service from a trafficked person.

James Spencer, chairman of the British Nursing and Midwifery Council, told Quinn: ‘You consistently placed your own commercial needs above those of highly vulnerable patients.’ The clinic on Osea Island in Maldon, Essex, UK, was closed down following an investigation in 2010. It came after Channel 4 executive Sarah Mulvey – who had been treated there for stress the previous year – took her own life at her home in north London. An inquest heard the 35-year-old was asked to leave the retreat after a suicide attempt – making her feel
she had been left ‘high and dry’. Quinn, 38, of Lewes, East Sussex, denied all the allegations against him at the NMC hearing in London. He said workers had cooked up stories to ruin him. But announcing the decision to strike him off, Mr Spencer told him: ‘You allowed particularly vulnerable patients to be admitted into an unregistered and unsafe environment.’

EastEnders star accused of ‘hurling racial abuse’
Accused: Linda Henry in EastEnders PICTURE: bbC

EASTENDERS star Linda Henry is facing trial over claims she hurled racial abuse at someone outside a Jamie Oliver restaurant. The 51-year-old, who plays barmaid Shirley Carter in the BBC soap, was charged with racially aggravated harassment after the incident near the Greenwich branch of Jamie’s Italian in September. It is alleged the actress used threatening or abusive words likely to cause harassment after she became embroiled in a row at the restaurant in south-east London.
A spokesman for Henry, who has been charged under her married name Valiris, said: ‘Linda will be defending the allegation.’ A source close to her told The Sun: ‘Linda is horrified at the accusation and intends to fight it tooth and nail. Those close to her know the truth and the type of person she is.’ Although summonsed to appear at Bexley magistrates’ court yesterday, Henry sent her lawyer along to enter a not guilty plea. A BBC spokeswoman declined to comment.

Water charge is there for a good reason
T
o Dave ormonDe, do you know what the modification measures are for the eU Water Framework? I doubt very much it requires a referendum here. The reason for setting up a commercial entity to run water is so that when the capital is needed to fix the broken water system it doesn’t form part of the national debt and therefore push us over the eU debt limits. I don’t agree with how Irish Water has been set up, but I’ll be damned if I’m going to support Paul murphy and his grab for power through peddling misconceptions. Why do you have such an aversion to paying for the water you use? JW, Dublin 15 ■ So a €12billion budget is needed by the
HSe to look after four million people – and the health minister says he needs a bigger budget. once again the taxpayer is being taken for a ride. The joke is that the majority of patients are still suffering painfully. It is a shame that rather than finding efficiencies, our new minister is playing the same old joke on the taxpayer that his predecessor did. SN ■ Walking in a straight line, breath tests, blood tests... please stop this nonsense. We don’t need new laws, we need enforcement. How many people do you see driving with an n plate? not many. and many drivers don’t know what it means! Where is the enforcement? People are still driving after drinking because they know how to beat the system. We have learnt nothing. Anon

Laura Wareham came off the pitch only after the pain left her unable to kick, but collapsed twice before being taken to hospital. its absurdity and, crucially, throw in jokes for grown ups that will sail over the heads of kids. Fast forward to something resembling the present day and a bear arrives in London, expecting everyone to doff their hats, talk about the weather and offer him a home. At Paddington Station, he is eventually scooped up by Mrs Brown (Sally hawkins) and her grudging husband (hugh Bonneville), who invite him to spend one night in their Primrose hill home with their young son, daughter and housekeeper (Julie Walters). Mr Brown wants to call the authorities on
this illegal immigrant; Mrs Brown wants to help him find the explorer who promised his family a warm welcome – and the plot revolves around this search, with tension provided in the svelte form of baddie Nicole Kidman, a taxidermist trying to nab a Marmalade-munching bear. If the story is basic, the gags are not: this weaves in clever, character-based jokes about modern life, parenthood and nosy neighbours (namely, Doctor Who’s Peter Capaldi). For younger kids, there are several enjoyable action set pieces involving Paddington’s clumsiness. As for Paddington himself, he’s a furry computer-generated wonder, with Ben Whishaw’s soft, young voice proving a better fit than original choice Colin Firth would have. use their own names over the radio during a break-in. None of the plot stands up to the slightest bit of examination, though, and the recurring jokes wear thin. As with the first film, the supporting characters are more interesting: step forward Jennifer Aniston as Julia, Dale’s predatory former boss who is shoehorned in, but not unwelcome. Aniston has a lot of fun as a leather-clad vixen who ‘collects penises’, while Kevin Spacey also returns and Pine is enjoyable as the kidnap victim. This sequel won’t win over any new fans, but those after more of the same should find it a watchable giggle.

Lost in a heart of darkness Defender Of The Faith HHHHI
Love/Hate has become such a phenomenon in popular culture that it’s easy to forget creator Stuart Carolan first came to our attention as a playwright with 2004’s Defender of the Faith. a cynic might suggest that Decadent theatre Company’s decision to dust down this early work is simply a means of cashing in on the success of Carolan’s gritty tv juggernaut. But there’s no doubting the quality of the writing here, nor the commitment of a fine cast. the play’s title alludes to the epithet conferred upon Henry vIII by Pope Leo X but, given how things panned out between england and Rome when Henry made himself head of the church, it’s little surprise that it’s been deployed ironically. the action takes place on a dairy farm in a republican stronghold of armagh in the mid-1980s. Paterfamilias Joe (Peter Gowen) is a long-standing IRa member who, believing there’s an informer in his midst, has called upon a superior, JJ (a suitably menacing Diarmuid De Faoite), to investigate. a dark shadow of suspicion is cast not only on Joe himself but on his son Danny (David Martin) and farmhand Barney (Lalor Roddy, pictured), whose commitment to the cause appears to be driven as

cLubs McDE suRgEOn & TR //ER DETROiT swinDLE (LivE) Danilo Plessow is still in his late twenties, having started to produce at a very young age. Inspired by jazz, house and techno, he put out his first record at the age of 15 back in 2000. However, it wasn’t until 2008 that his music gained recognition. Working as Motor City Drum Ensemble – or MCDE for short – and focusing on house music, Plessow released the groundbreaking Raw Cuts series of records. Subsequently, some of these tracks were remixed by Detroit luminaries like Recloose and Mike Huckaby. To get a sense of what Plessow sounds like behind the decks, check out his excellent 2011 DJ Kicks mix, which moves from funk to minimal techno without missing a beat. much by loneliness as by revolutionary zeal. Defender of the Faith is an involving exploration of the disparity between a romanticised idea of sectarianism and a reality that’s marked by paranoia, fear and human weakness. the attention to detail here is exceptional: the screens on owen MacCarthaigh’s set are cleverly designed to rotate, capturing first a grimy farmhouse interior, and later – in a particularly poignant scene – the secluded spot where the body of an informer is abandoned. Meanwhile, Mike o’Halloran’s lighting is thoughtfully deployed, particularly during scene changes when a torch– part searchlight, part interrogator’s lamp – is pointed at the audience. Performances are invariably strong but special mention should go to David Martin for his sensitive turn as grieving son Danny and Roddy as sadsack Barney. a melodramatic epilogue notwithstanding, this is a major success for director andrew Flynn and his crew.
Anthony Child, aka Surgeon, recently shared the same stage as Lady Gaga, but it’s unlikely that this encounter will have had any bearing on his music-making. The Birmingham DJ made his name during the 1990s with his innovative interpretations of minimal techno on his Dynamic Tension and Counterbalance labels. Since then, Child has also experimented with abstract, ambience, field recordings and dubstep – and his inspirational DJ sets usually end up fusing all of these elements in a riotous cacophony of sound. Support comes from UK techno duo TR //ER. Tomorrow, District8, 135 -138 Francis Street, D8, 10pm, €15/€18. No matter what their stage name suggests, Lars Dales and Maarten Smeets come from Amsterdam and not the Motor City. However, they are inspired by the soulful house and techno grooves of Detroit producers like Rik Wilhite and Carl Craig, and these influences are clearly audible on their releases for Dirt Crew and Tsuba. Expect them to air tracks from their debut album, Boxed Out at this live show in Opium Rooms tonight. Tonight, Abstract/Wolf Music, Opium Rooms, Liberty Lane, D2, 11pm, €12/€15.

Santa Claus Is Back In Town Blue Christmas may be The King’s best known Xmas track, but this

The divine Miss Kitt really melts the snow with this slowburner from 1953. Not one you’d be keen on hearing Granny sing. Best lyric: Think of all the fun I’ve missed/Think of all the fellas that I haven’t kissed/ Next year I could be just as good/If you’ll check off my Christmas list.

We Wanna See Santa Do The Mambo Bongos for Christmas Why not. Heat up the kitchen with this 1954 hit from saxophonist Greer, and stick it on when the neighbours pop round for an eggnog. Best lyric: Take your big fat belly/And let it shake like jelly.

Santa Claus, Go Straight To The Ghetto The Godfather of Soul recorded enough Christmas songs to fill a superstore of stockings – but this, from 1968, reflects on those having a trickier time of it all. Best lyric: Santa Claus, go straight to the ghetto/Tell him James Brown sent you.

Tributes pour in for icon Hughes
rugby leinster
by TOMás MOORE
Close friend David Warner and Australia captain Michael Clarke led an outpouring of emotional tributes to Phillip Hughes following the batsman’s death at the age of 25. Hughes died yesterday, two days after being struck on the head by a bouncer while batting for south Australia against New south Wales at the sydney Cricket Ground. Warner, who was playing in the match and raced to help his stricken friend, was one of a number of players who visited Hughes at st Vincent’s Hospital and was in tears as he left. The pair were team-mates for five years at New south Wales and with Australia and Warner posted a picture of them together on Twitter, wearing the Baggy Green with their arms round each other. He wrote: ‘Brothers in arms, RIP mate. I will always walk out there forever knowing your by my side. love you BRAZ!!’ An ashen-faced Clarke said in a statement on behalf of the Hughes family: ‘We’re devastated by the loss of our muchloved son and brother. Cricket was Phillip’s life, and we as a family shared that love with him. We love you.’ Australia great shane Warne described the news of Hughes’ death as ‘shocking, horrific and very, very sad’. He added on sky sports News: ‘We all love the entertainment sport gives us, so to see something like this... it is something that should never happen. He was one of the good guys.’ The Australian flag was flown at half mast at the sydney Cricket Ground following Hughes’ death.

MADigAn sET fOR sTART AT 10 As LEinsTER gET in gEAR fOR Quins bATTLE WHOEVER wears numbers 10 and 13 for Leinster tomorrow will give us a big hint about how the season will play out for Ian Madigan and Fergus McFadden. Leinster coach Matt O’Connor has virtually no time to get his internationals back in harness ahead of their Champions Cup doubleheader with Harlequins next week and it looks likely that his Ireland front-liners will be held back for this weekend’s visit of Ospreys. Ian Madigan should, however, make this team given his light but effective appearances for Ireland during the Guinness Series. It seems Madigan has spent the month in Ireland camp running at out-half and given the shaky form we’ve seen from Jimmy Gopperth this season now is a good opportunity to put Madigan in the driver’s seat. There’s a confidence about Madigan that the Kiwi seems short on while the Irish playmaker has improved on lots of little pieces in his game including defence and control. We’d argue in favour of him getting a run this weekend with an eye on starting him away to Harlequins the following week. If he is named at 12, a move that would stall Noel Reid’s injury comeback, with Gopperth at 10, then it looks like he will not be given an opportunity to play in his natural position and that would be a tremendous shame.
1 start at number 10 for Ian Madigan in eight appearances for Leinster this season. If fit, Fergus McFadden should start this weekend too, and whether he is deployed out wide or in the centre will reveal what O’Connor’s plans are for the Irish international. With his first opportunity to throw Luke Fitzgerald a starting jersey this season O’Connor pitched him in at outside centre given Ben Te’o’s injury absence and it’s likely that those two players when fully fit will compete for the outside centre shirt. McFadden will be hoping for a chance to alter O’Connor’s thinking and this weekend is likely to prove the only chance to do so if preferred to the underwhelming Brendan Macken. It’s a good chance Eoin Reddan and Mike McCarthy (if fit) will return to the line-up but our guess is that Rhys Ruddock, Devin Toner, Jack McGrath, Mike Ross, Sean Cronin, Gordon D’Arcy and Rob Kearney could all be spared by Ireland coach Joe Schmidt’s player management programme. With players returning from injury it looks like the options are opening up for O’Connor, but probably not in time to create genuine competition for places against Quins where cohesion will be a big factor.

LiverpooL midfielder Joe Allen believes the scrappy Champions League draw against Bulgarian minnows Ludogorets can be an unlikely platform on which to rebuild their season. The point kept alive the reds’ hopes of making the knockout stages of the competition but the result may be just as significant in helping get their domestic campaign back on track. Despite conceding an 88th-
minute equaliser, Allen insists there are positives to be taken from the 2-2 draw. ‘The bigger picture is that our Champions League dream is still alive – and still in our hands – and that is a big bonus for us,’ he said ahead of tomorrow’s premier League visit of Stoke. ‘The manager [Brendan rodgers] mentioned it was almost like a fresh start and we see it that way as players. Last night was a positive step.’

Alan double rubs in Salz but Celtic still progress gROup D
CeLtiC .................1 RB SALzBuRg....3 by Fraser Rorison
CELTIC progressed to the last 32 of the Europa League but in less than impressive fashion as they were well beaten by Salzburg at Parkhead. Striker Alan netted twice for the Austrian champions in the opening 13 minutes and the Hoops could have been further behind before Stefan Johansen responded on the half hour. The match was more even after the break but Naby Keita finished off a break in injury time to seal top spot in Group D for Salzburg. Celtic progress to the next stage after Astra beat Dynamo Zagreb but they will have to raise their game in the knockout stages. Skipper Scott Brown, Efe Ambrose, Leigh Griffiths and Callum McGregor came in for the hosts but they were caught cold as Alan stunned the home fans twice in a spectacular opening. The first goal came on eight minutes when midfielder Massimo
Bruno cut in from the left and his deflected strike fell perfectly for the Brazilian to slot past Craig Gordon. Andre Ramalho then flicked on a Christoph Leitgeb corner, leaving Alan to volley in from close range. McGregor had a penalty appeal waved away and Jonathan Soriano fired home from 25 yards, only to realise the free-kick was indirect. Gordon made no attempt to save. Alan had a strong appeal for a penalty after a challenge by Virgil van Dijk but the Hoops got back in the game when Johansen drilled a Emilio Izaguirre cross past Peter Gulacsi. The hosts appeared far more composed after the interval and a succession of corners led to Anthony Stokes curling a set-piece on to the top of the bar. At the other end, Alan almost got his hat-trick as he just missed Soriano’s cross. Gulacsi parried clear a Griffiths header after the forward had been picked out by Izaguirre. But Salzburg secured victory in injury time when Gordon could only block Marcel Sabitzer’s effort with his legs and Keita headed in the rebound.

‘Jet-lagged’ McIlroy off to a slow start in Australia
Tired eyes: Rory McIlroy
RoRy McIlRoy got the defence of his Australian open title under way with a two-under-par 69 that leaves him just two shots behind first round leader Jordan Spieth. World No.1 McIlroy, who edged out rival and home hope Adam Scott on the 72nd hole last year, was slightly off the pace on a cool and overcast morning at the Australian Golf Club in Sydney. He was level par for his opening nine holes, where his birdie at the 14th was immediately given back at the next hole, but improved after the turn.
The 25-year-old birdied the first and picked up further shots at the fifth and ninth, in-between his second bogey of the day at the seventh.
‘I feel there are better scores out there for me’ McIlroy admitted he feels he can improve as the week goes on and revealed he is still adjusting to the time difference. ‘I feel like there’s a better score out there for me,’ he said in quotes
on the PGA Tour of Australasia’s Twitter account. ‘I’m feeling a bit jet-lagged.’ Spieth set the early pace, with a round of six birdies and two bogeys giving him a 67 which puts him a shot clear at the head of a leaderboard dominated by Australian players. Home hopes Scott Gardiner and Aron Price were three under, with McIlroy among seven players on two under. Australians Adam Crawford, Geoff Drakeford, Richard Green and Andrew Tampion carded 69s.
