‘we won’t take any more pain’
Tens of thousands of people defied biting cold yesterday to throng central Dublin in protest at the imminent water charges. Despite the biting cold winter weather and forecast high winds, protesters arrived from all over the country for a national day of demonstration outside Leinster House. Right2Water, an umbrella group of trade unions and left-leaning political parties who organised the rally, claimed the crowd numbered up to 100,000 at one stage. The Gardaí said the official figure was ‘in excess of 30,000’. There were two arrests for public order offences close to where the Kildare street entrance to Leinster House was barricaded. But with musicians, singers, activists and politicians entertaining and addressing the rally from a main stage,

the demonstration was overwhelmingly peaceful and good-natured. The only sour note was for commuters, with evening rush-hour traffic at a standstill for several hours. This was compounded by a car parked on the green Luas line near Beechwood. Oscar winning singer-songwriter Glen Hansard was among a number of celebrities who turned up. ‘I think there’s something happening in the world, and I feel this is our version of it,’ he said. ‘The water charge is the straw that’s breaking our backs – people are essentially very dissatisfied with how we are being governed.’ He added: ‘I’m not political, but the Irish nation has now been forced to be (political) and to come out on the streets.’

Made a boo-boo: The polar bear finds it’s on thin ice
Thursday, December 11, 2014 METRO HERALD
O G T S U J L L ’ I K N I TH . . . E O L F E H T H T I W A POLAR bear seems to have taken a chance a bit too early on the first ice before winter – and got stuck on his own on a melting floe. Photographed by Marco Gaiotti in the Arctic, the bear appears to be looking around for an escape. Thankfully he managed to make it off the wobbly ice island in Svalbard and take shelter on the shore. Through the summer, polar bears struggle to find food on dry land and have to live off their fat reserves. Once
the ice comes back they can explore further and move from island to island to fish and hunt for seals. This bear was spotted by Mr Gaiotti on the first ice of autumn on the Norwegian archipelago. ‘I like polar bears because of their incredible environment, with six months of light and six months of darkness,’ said the 31-year-old Italian. ‘The extreme temperatures make life impossible for most other animals — but polar bears thrive.’
Christmas trees set to be chucked NoT sure what to do with the Christmas tree come January? How about using it to practise for the fourth annual Irish Christmas Tree Throwing Championship next month? The event, which is commonplace across Germany and Austria, sees contestants attempt to achieve the longest distance by throwing a standard 1.5metre tree. organised by Clare County Council, in conjunction with Active Ennis Sports and Leisure Facilities, all proceeds will go towards ISPCC Childline, which is trying to raise €2.1 million to keep its night services open. The Championship takes place on Sunday, January 4, at 1pm at Active Ennis Tim Smyth Park.
O’Driscoll gets better by degree

IrISH rugby legend Brian o’Driscoll etched another entry on his glittering CV yesterday when he was awarded an honorary degree in Belfast. It was gown and mortar board instead of boots and gumshield for the retired star as he was recognised for services to sport by Queen’s University. Former Irish captain o’Driscoll, who was capped 133 times for his country and eight times for the British and Irish Lions, was delighted with the accolade. Ireland’s highest ever try scorer, who has swapped playing for TV punditry since his retirement, said: ‘To receive this recognition from such a prestigious university is a considerable honour.’

Water charges: Message s inspired by YouTube sen sation
by LukE HOLOHAn
ON WHAT was a wintry day in the capital, fair-weather dissenters might have spurned the ‘wind of change’ for the warmth of indoors. But as gales swept through Dublin, the streets flooded with demonstrators in protest over impending water bills. ‘Enda Kenny, not a penny’ came the cries, as tens of thousands marched – toting flags and placards – along a Gardamonitored route. Beginning at the Garden of Remembrance, and moving past the General Post Office, the masses converged at the gates of Leinster House at Merrion Square. Earlier, Environment Minister Alan Kelly had announced no further concessions would be forthcoming. Rory O’Connor took the day off work to march with the Leitrim Against Irish Water group. He said
nothing less than scrapping the charge would be acceptable. ‘Concessions are no good to us, it’s abolition,’ he said. ‘At this stage I think it is time Enda Kenny took his crew and left.’ John Dolan came up to Dublin on the morning train from Cork to voice his opinion. ‘It’s not just water charges – that’s just the straw that broke the camel’s back,’ he said. ‘It’s everything from the prescription charges right up to the household charges. There are too many taxes. Down the road you’re going to have to pay for every pint of water.’ People of all ages gathered adjacent to the leafy Merrion Square to watch speakers from the Right2Water campaign and the Detroit Water Brigade. Organisers said the number of protesters reached 100,000 while Gardaí claimed the number was closer to 30,000. Fronting an Anti-Austerity Alliance petition stall, Socialist TD Ruth Coppinger said: ‘If the Government ignores this, they do so at their peril.’
Country unites in anger conTinueD from p1« ‘We’ve gone through a lot as a nation. It feels like there is more and more screws being put on the people. A lot of money that went out of the country in different directions and it is not up to the people to pay it back.’ Hansard, who won an Academy Award for his song Falling Slowly, took to the stage with
musician Damien Dempsey. ‘You can see the rebellion in people’s eyes – you can see the spirit coming back into the Irish people,’ Dempsey said. Originally, the Government had signalled the water levy would be up to €600 a year for some families. But mounting dissent and increasingly rowdy protests forced a U-turn.
Householders will now be liable for charges of €60 for single adult homes and €160 for all other homes, a flat rate set for four years. Controversy has also surrounded the setting up of Irish Water, the utility company that will administer and charge for water. Bonuses have been suspended at the company while a review is ordered into salaries.

By JOEL TAyLOR BRAVE student and education activist Malala Yousafzai became the youngest person ever to win the Nobel Peace Prize yesterday. The 17-year-old Pakistani girl, who was shot in the head by the Taliban for campaigning for girls’ rights to education, was handed a gold medal and diploma at the official ceremony in Oslo, Norway. Referring to her heroic campaign, she said: ‘I am here to stand up for their rights, to raise their voice. ‘It is not time to pity them. It is time to take action, so it becomes the last time that we see a child deprived of education.’ The UK-based teenager was jointly awarded the peace prize with Indian children’s rights activist Kailash Satyarthi. Malala began fighting for girls’ rights at the age of 11 and survived an assassination attempt in October 2012. She was airlifted to Birmingham, where she was treated at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital. Unable to return to her homeland because of threats to her life, she is now a student at Edgbaston High School in the city. ‘I tell my story not because it is unique, but because it is not. It is the story of many girls,’ said Malala.

Appeal: Pistorius could face a longer jail term
Blade Runner could face 15 years in jail Oscar PistOrius could face a murder conviction after a judge agreed to an appeal against his lesser charge of culpable homicide. Judge thokozile Masipa, who sentenced the Olympian to five years for killing girlfriend reeva steenkamp last year, agreed that prosecutor Gerrie Nel had raised valid ‘questions’ which should be assessed by the south african appeals court. Nel argued the judge wrongly interpreted a law, saying someone is guilty of murder only if they foresaw their actions ending in death. under his current sentence, Pistorius could be placed under house arrest after serving just a sixth of his sentence. But he could face a minimum of 15 years behind bars if found guilty of murder.

Dáil votes to recognise palestinian state – but Government not bound tHE Dáil has voted in favour of recognising the state of Palestine. While largely a symbolic gesture, as the private members bill was not binding on the Government, the initiative drew cross-party support. the vote was cast last night following a motion from sinn Féin to recognise ‘a Palestine state based on its 1967 borders’. the motion came after israel refused to allow
Gerry adams to enter the Gaza strip during a threeday visit to the Middle East last week.
All parties in the Dáil supported the move all parties in the Dáil supported the move, with the Government saying it backed the motion because its members favoured a
two-state solution for israel and Palestine. Last month, Foreign affairs Minister charlie Flanagan said ireland would recognise a Palestinian state if it helped to ‘advance the peace process’ in the Middle East. after last night’s vote, ireland joins eight other European union countries in recognising Palestine as a state, with sweden being the first – and biggest – Eu member state to do so.

‘A minimally talented spoiled brat’... movie producer’s email over Angelina Jolie leaked ANGELINA JOLIE was dubbed a ‘spoiled brat’ in emails between two Hollywood bigwigs. The actress became a target after the pair reportedly messaged each other about the upcoming film about Apple mogul Steve Jobs. The emails, allegedly exchanged between Sony Pictures chief Amy Pascal and producer Scott Rudin, were leaked and published by US news website Gawker. It had been claimed Jolie, 39, wanted The Social Network’s David Fincher to leave the biopic, called Jobs, and direct her film about Cleopatra instead. ‘She is upset about us giving David Jobs. She wants to talk,’ Pascal purportedly wrote to Rudin. He is said to have replied: ‘She’ll survive it… I don’t want to waste my time on this.’ Rudin then continued to comment on Jolie’s Cleopatra project, writing that he had ‘zero appetite for the indulgence of spoiled brats’. He is then alleged to have ranted: ‘I have told you exactly how I want to do this material. ‘It’s the ONLY way I want to do this material. ‘I’m not remotely interested in presiding over a $180million ego bath that we both know will be the careerdefining debacle for us both.’ Rudin then allegedly refused to work with Jolie. ‘I’m not destroying my career over a minimally talented spoiled brat who thought nothing of shoving this off her plate for 18 months so she could go direct a movie. I have no desire to be making a movie with her, or anybody, that she runs and we don’t. ‘She’s a camp event and a celebrity and that’s all and the last thing anybody needs is to make a giant bomb with her that any fool could

People power can change our country
I
would like to congratulate the many thousands of people who thronged the streets of dublin yesterday to protest against the water charges and the brutal regime of austerity that we’ve been subjected to. I met people from every corner of Ireland and it made me realise that we are the real power in this country and we can send Enda Kenny and his ilk packing if they don’t listen to our demands. And let’s hope whoever replaces them has learnt that lesson too. Tomás, Swords ■ So Mr Cranky, what’s your problem with the name Aoibheann? I was given this name 30 years ago and to this day have only come across a handful of others. Get over it! Aoibheann (Surprise!)
■ olive, I missed Metro Herald’s information on a pro-abortion website. However, I very much doubt that there is any such thing as a pro-abortion website. It’s not like it’s a fun procedure. I would imagine that it was information about women terminating their own pregnancies... You know, giving a woman the right to do what she likes with her own body. Hardly the ideology of a ‘radical group’. Should a woman lose all rights to her uterus for the term of her pregnancy? who are we to force anybody to stay pregnant? If you had a 12-month-old who needed a transplant and you were the only suitable donor, should it be legal to force you to donate? of course not. why is a foetus given extra rights? we are discarding women’s rights. HSE rules out secret fliming despite care home exposé
PRIMARY Care Minister Kathleen Lynch has said she is ‘shocked and distressed’ by revelations of standards of care at a Mayo care home. Abusive behaviour by staff at the HSE-run Áras Attracta in Swinford was highlighted in Tuesday’s Inside Bungalow 3 Prime Time investigation. It showed a number of residents being slapped, kicked, physically restrained,

demns’ the practices shown on the RTÉ programme. INMO general secretary Liam Doran said: ‘These unacceptable, objectionable and abhorrent practices occur when individuals fail those they are caring for, management bureaucracies lose sight of the core values and objectives of a health service and when independ-
ent inspectorates are not equipped to carry out their duties.’ Speaking on RTÉ radio, HSE chief Tony O’Brien ruled out covert filming in such facilities but said that the HSE will consider random checks by undercover staff. It will hold a meeting on Tuesday to examine whether similar conditions exist in other care facilities.
Poisonous widow JAPANESE prosecutors have charged a 68-year-old woman with murder, weeks after she was arrested on suspicion of poisoning her husband, one of at least six men who have died while in a relationship with her over the past 20 years. Chisako Kakehi has denied responsibility for the deaths. Kyoto district prosecutors indicted Kakehi in the death of her 75-year-old husband, Isao. He died in December 2013, a month after they married. Police found cyanide in his body and arrested Kakehi last month.
‘Every person who uses these services is entitled to live in an atmosphere of safety’ force-fed and otherwise mistreated. Eleven employees have been taken off duty pending the outcome of a HSE investigation. Minister Lynch said: ‘I am shocked and distressed by the revelations of extremely poor and unacceptable stand-
nerable people in residential care whose families have entrusted them to the care of professional staff.’ The Irish Nurses and Midwives Organisation, which represents more than 2,250 Registered Nurses in Intellectual Disability, said it ‘unreservedly con-

1. The Fall
BBC2, 9pm Just how much longer are the Belfast police going to let suspected killer Paul Spector wander loose on the streets? The tension – and the credibility – of this claustrophobic thriller is stretched to the brink in tonight’s penultimate episode, but the combination of Gillian Anderson’s chic style and Jamie Dornan’s brooding beard are hard to resist.
2. BBC Music Awards
BBC1, 8pm Does the world really need another awards show? The BBC clearly think so, because they’ve come up with a kind of budget version of the Brits, with just three gongs – British Artist of the Year, International Artist of the Year and Song of the Year – dished out in between turns from Coldplay, Paloma Faith and, inevitably, One Direction. Chris Evans and Fearne Cotton lead the back-slapping.
The Knick’s penultimate episode sees Clive Owen’s surgeon struggle with a growing addiction

3. The Knick
Sky Atlantic, 9pm
He’s undoubtedly a gifted surgeon but Thackery (a raddled-looking Clive Owen) is increasingly enslaved by his drug addiction. And it’s leading him into dangerous territory as Steven Soderbergh’s medical drama builds to next week’s climax.
5 4 Wrongly accused: The Lost Honour Of Christopher Jefferies follows his quiet quest for justice
4. The Lost Honour Of Christopher Jefferies
UTV, 9pm No longer a suspect in the Joanna Yeates murder case, Christopher Jefferies (Jason Watkins) seeks a return to his quiet life. But his reputation is in tatters and the reality slowly dawns on this private man that his only way forward lies in fighting back. Steve Coogan supplies a priceless cameo – playing himself – while the much-wronged Jefferies seeks a very civilised form of justice.
5. The Big Bang Theory
E4, 8pm Prom night, as anyone who has watched too much American TV well knows, is no time to be a geek. So tonight it’s payback time as Leonard, Sheldon and the gang concoct their own version of prom fun, an escapade that brings out a side of Sheldon no one has ever glimpsed before...
It’s prom night on The Big Bang Theory but the geeks have a plan...

BBC1, 11.10pm Now here’s a potentially explosive combination: Nigel Farage wrestling Russell ‘Revolutionary’ Brand on the issues of the day, with David Dimbleby handed the unenviable task of keeping best of order as the crowd in Canterbury turn into a seething bearpit of rampant prejudice and incandescent outrage. Well, that’s what we’re hoping for.
7. The naked village More4, 9pm
Hidden among the neatly trimmed
bushes of suburban Hertfordshire lurks Spielplatz, a genteel naturist community who have been letting it all hang out for decades. But with property prices soaring and members drooping, the Spielplatz set are under mounting pressure to sell up. A delicious slice of pinkcheeked eccentricity.
8. naked And Afraid
Discovery, 9pm What better way to warm the cockles on a chilly winter’s night than by watching a pair of exhibitionists show off their, ahem, survival skills in the Bahamas?
Tonight they face a scary swarm of tiny predators — though just how hard it is to survive on a paradise island with a coconut on every corner and yachts in the harbour is somewhat questionable.
9. Maia Dunphy’s What Women Want
RTÉ 2, 10pm What makes the perfect beauty queen? Do people ever really look like they do on their social media profiles? Was the no-make-up selfie phenomenon just one big scam? All these and other burning questions are addressed in this
evening’s edition of the show, which ultimately asks whether it’s possible for women, in our youthobessed culture, to age gracefully.
10. Today’s Films: Lord Of The Rings Day
Sky Greats, from 12pm Working on the basis that you can never have too much Tolkien, Sky Greats is screening Peter Jackson’s acclaimed 2001-2003 trilogy back to back – that’s over 12 hours of top-notch fantasy, Ian McKellen in a flowing grey beard and Andy Serkis elevating the word ‘precious’ to the stuff of movie legend.

And if the range ticks the boxes of being fashion forward and unique, well then, that’s a very welcome bonus. with their spring summer 2015 collection, Penneys promises to make good on all of these. the erudite approach to design that Penneys habitually takes each year never fails us. we want what’s new and what the catwalk inspires, but we need it to be affordable. so pray tell, what do they have in store for spring summer that meets our

No spring summer 2015 collection is complete without a nod to the seventies, and Nomadic Glamour does just that with a predilection to the catwalk trend of fringing and gypsy glamour. this story is all about detail; it’s full of embroidery,

Ian Packham, musical director with Gloria (Dublin’s Lesbian and Gay Choir) on his festive favourites Being the musical director with Gloria I thought this would be difficult as there are so many pieces that I love at this time of year, but when I started thinking about it, it actually became very easy to choose. Christmas just hasn’t started for me until I’ve heard these songs... O Holy Night To be fair, this is an obvious classic but it just isn’t Christmas until you have heard this belted out. I will always remember this song giving me goosebumps the first time I heard it – in fact it continues to do so. There is a lovely version on our new Christmas album, The Sound Of Christmas. *shameless plug* The Power Of Love by Gabriel Alpin While this is not a Christmas song per se, you may remember it was included on the John Lewis Christmas ad a few years ago. I just loved the snowman out looking for love and the melody now always make me think of snowy places. Candlelight Carol by John Rutter I find Rutter’s arrangements amazing and this one just makes me feel so Christmassy. I’m delighted that we are performing this in our concert on Friday – it’s the choirs first time to perform it in public and I can’t wait... No pressure guys! War is Over by John Lennon This is a real classic but it’s one that will never lose its appeal. I jut love the melody and of course there’s nothing like a big choir belting it out in the background.
All I Want For Christmas by Mariah Carey What can I say?! This makes every Christmas list... no gay man can say he’s not danced around the room to this one at some point! One of these days I’ll have to do it with the choir. God. Help. Them.
O Magnum Mysterium – Morten Laurisden This is my all time favourite piece of choral music. It happens to be on our new album Our Kind of Music – nudge, nudge – and melody and harmonies in this just make me tingle. It’s nearly killed us learning it but it was worth it as it’s now one of our most popular.
Gloria’s sold-out Christmas concert takes place in St Patrick’s Cathedral tomorrow. If you missed out take heart: the choir has released a series of new albums this year, including The Sound of Christmas, available from www.gloria.ie
Away In A Manger This is such an oldie but it’s great. I’m a primary school principal and every Christmas I really look forward to hearing all our infants singing this – it’s such a treat and always brings a smile to my face.

Former France midfielder Nasri stunned Roma with a thunderous blast from more around 20 yards out on the hour. The scorching shot cracked in off the near post, giving goalkeeper Morgan De Sanctis no chance. Then, with time ticking away and Bayern Munich beating CSKA Moscow at the Allianz Arena, City right-back Pablo Zabaleta nipped in to finish the job. The Premier League champions had not been at their best early on, which was hardly a surprise. Injuries to stars Vincent Kompany and

Screamer: Nasri lets fly to net his sensational strike at the Olympic Stadium

Sergio Aguero, a suspension for Yaya Toure and David Silva only able to start on the bench meant City began with something of a shadow side. Joe Hart needed to be alert to deny Jose Holebas and later dived at full stretch to tip an angled drive from Gervinho around his far post before keeping out a longrange attempt from Miralem Pjanic. But City kept plugging away and clawed their way into contention with James Milner twice unfortunate not to break the deadlock. Roma were close to equalising in the 71st minute when Kostas Manolas struck the woodwork before Hart made a great save to foil the Greek midfielder. But City, who appeared to have blown their chances after poor results against CSKA, finished the stronger to go into Monday’s draw for the last 16.

Arbeloa: Our Real incentive is silver ALVARO ARBELOA insists Real Madrid cannot allow their record-breaking run to distract from a push for silverware. Carlo Ancelotti’s side set a new Spanish record of 19 straight wins in Tuesday’s 4-0 victory over Ludogorets. They top La Liga and boast a 100 per cent record in their Champions League group but former Liverpool full-back Arbeloa said: ‘It is important to keep this run going and we have some difficult matches ahead. We are relaxed about these records and we know at the end of the season people may or may not remember them depending on what we achieve.’ Ex-Chelsea boss Ancelotti added: ‘It is a result we have achieved with extraordinary seriousness and an incredible amount of professionalism.’ PW 6 4 6 2 6 2 6 0

The German handed sporting – who missed out on second place to schalke – a lifeline shortly after the break as his weak headed clearance fell to Jonathan silva allowing the left-back to pull one back for the visitors. however, sporting’s joy lasted just six minutes before John Obi Mikel restored chelsea’s two goal advantage when he poked home a Blues corner from close range.
CHRIS SMALLING will be out of action for two weeks after suffering a groin tear during Manchester United’s clash with Southampton on Monday. Smalling (pictured) joins Luke Shaw and Phil Jones on the sidelines, while Paddy McNair was so ragged against the Saints, manager Louis van Gaal replaced him after 39 minutes. It may be Michael Carrick again plays in defence in United’s showdown with old rivals Liverpool on Sunday.
Hereford banned THE future of Hereford United looks bleak after the club was suspended ‘from all football activity’ by the Football Association. The club ‘failed to comply’ with a deadline to answer questions posed by the Independent Regulatory Commission’s owners’ and directors’ test. Majority shareholder Alan McCarthy has also been suspended. The Bulls were expelled from the Conference Premier in June over unpaid football debts.

scHuRR THings Sporting chance: Schurrle celebrates his goal last night
chelsea bounce back as city take their last chance by nick METcALfE
CHELSEA recovered from their first defeat of the season with a comfortable Champions League win over Sporting at Stamford Bridge last night. Jose Mourinho’s men finally came unstuck at Newcastle last weekend, but were soon back to winning ways as they claimed a 3-1 victory over the Portuguese outfit. An early Cesc Fabregas penalty, a terrific strike from Andre Schurrle and a second-half tap-in from John
Obi Mikel made it a routine night at the office. Chelsea finished their Group G campaign six points clear of Schalke, to go into Monday’s draw for the last 16 in confident mood. Elsewhere, a fabulous strike from Samir Nasri and a late goal from Pablo Zabaleta gave Manchester City a 2-0 win at Roma, sending them into the knockout stages. City go through in second place behind Bayern Munich in Group E, meaning they could face one of the giants in the last 16.
