‘Students were shocked, of course. We received a few complaints, but not a lot’: Spokesman Emergency system’s official launch coming in the next few months Shocked students received a terrifying message on their BlackBerrys and iPhones Thursday morning that the University of Ottawa was in emergency lockdown because a violent aggressor was on campus. But there was no lockdown, and no aggressor. While testing the university’s emergency notification system — a series of pre-programmed messages sent out in the case of emergency situations, including violent offenders and gas leaks — a message was accidentally sent out, said uOttawa spokesman Vincent Lamontagne. “It was a human mistake,” said Lamontagne, “and we instantly cancelled the

Going off the rails at Scotiabank Place Thousands of rock fans of all ages were happy to see Ozzy Osbourne return to Ottawa Thursday night. The university apologized for the “unfortunate” incident, said Lamontagne, “but the positive aspect is that it shows how effective the tool is. “It’s working right now — obviously.” TRACEY TONG

It was a meeting of the mascots yesterday as Papa and Mama Ice Hog and their twins, Nouma and Noumi, along with Bonhomme Carnaval made an appearance in downtown Ottawa. The reunion, said NCC CEO Marie Lemay, “reflects the spirit of collaboration that has existed for several years between two major Canadian winter celebrations.” The NCC will unveil the program for Winterlude, held from Feb. 4 to 21, in the next few weeks.

It all boils down to a helping hand Salvation Army kettles benefit programs run out of Booth Centre By texting ‘HOPE’ to 45678 and donating $5, ‘you’re turning your phone into a little kettle’ says spokesman With a goal of collecting $525,000 in Ottawa, Sally Ann’s iconic Christmas kettles are out in full force. After last week’s kickoff, the Salvation Army Christmas Kettles program will see more than 500 volunteers manning 40 kettles across Ottawa full time starting Monday. The Christmas season

yields about 50 per cent of the total funds raised by the Salvation Army each year. “This is definitely a time that is very culturally identified with the Salvation Army,” said the Salvation Army’s area spokesman Michael Maidment. While the kettles are tradition, the organization is trying to make it easy for

people to give in a techsavvy world. “We realize people are looking for convenience, and as we rely on cash less and less, we can’t necessarily rely on physical kettles. We have to meet the needs of the donors. If they want to give that way, we’re willing to develop the technology to help them do that.”

SAVE UP TO

This year, the Salvation Army has several new initiatives, including a Google Map technology, which maps out the 2,000 physical kettles across Canada. Users can find their favourite, or the closest kettle, and make a donation, Maidment said. “You can give in Ottawa, or if you grew up in Mon-

60

treal, or have an affinity for work done in a city, you can give there, or track a kettle in your neighbourhood,” he said. Another new initiative is fillthekettle.com, which incorporates the pre-existing iKettle program that allows users to fundraise among family and friends online. TRACEY TONG

Is the sewer service line beyond the outside wall of your home or building blocked? If so, it is extremely important that you make sure no natural gas line intersects the sewer line before attempting to clear it. Using rotating or water jetting equipment to clear a blocked sewer line can damage a natural gas line and cause a serious gas leak. Ontario One Call offers free Natural Gas Sewer Safety Inspections on behalf of Enbridge. Guests at the Valentine’s Gala fundraiser for the Museum of Civilization will enjoy a four-course meal whipped up by executive chef Michael Daniels, but sometimes there’s nothing better than bread you made yourself, fresh from the oven. On Thursday, Grade 2 students from Charles H. Hulse Public School learned that as they made pita bread from scratch at the museum, one of the activities supported by the Valentine’s Gala. “Because they’re doing it with their own hands, that’s what it is about,” said program interpreter Renee Lemieux, who led the kids in Thursday’s baking. “That’s how you learn.” Their teacher, Susan Goodwin, said these pro-

Montreal just got even closer It’s important to develop sustainable transportation options for people in Ottawa, said the president of a local car-sharing service Thursday. VRTUCAR’s Wilson Wood, Quebec’s Communauto and Via Rail announced a partnership that will make travelling to Montreal less of a hassle for people living in Ottawa.

The service will allow Ottawa travellers to book a train ride and a car for trips to Montreal and vice versa. “Think of a cab ride up to Kanata from (the Tremblay Road station). If you’re using taxis to get around that area it might be pretty expensive,” said Via chief marketing and sales officer, Steve del Bosco. Starting Friday, visitors

to Via Rail’s website can book a return train ticket and a car for 24 hours for a promotional price of $79 until the end of March. After the program first launched in Quebec City and Montreal, del Bosco said he got calls from people in Ottawa asking when it would launch here. “We got great feedback,” he said. JOE LOFARO

Hitmakers in harmony TORSTAR NEWS SERVICE

Top music stars press top Tories for a copying levy on MP3 players Some of the biggest names in the Canadian television, film and music industries are on an MP3 mission. They’re demanding a levy on MP3 players — like the levy applied to blank CDs and cassettes. The levy, charged as compensation for material that is privately copied, is then doled out in the form of royalties. On Thursday, an A-to-Z of music stars — including Anne Murray, Nickelback's Chad Kroeger and members of the Tragically Hip — wrote to Heritage Minister James Moore and Industry Minister Tony Clement pressing the issue. “MP3 players are this generation’s version of blank media,” the artists wrote. “A copy is a copy and the principle of fair compensation for rights holders should apply

The flipside Heritage Minister James Moore says placing a levy on copied music is complicated. Canadians aren’t just buying MP3s these days, but also streaming music onto phones and players. Whether a levy would also apply to videos is another thorny issue.

whether the copy is made onto blank media or MP3 players. “We know that you do not want to see a Canada that is devoid of musicians and songwriters, but without fair and balanced treatment, that may be the tragic consequence.” Other artists who attached their names to the letter include Stompin' Tom Connors, Tom Cochrane and Metric. Premier Danny Williams, the political pugilist from Newfoundland and Labrador whose popularity was the envy of politicians across Canada, is leaving politics. Williams said Thursday he is stepping down on Dec. 3, ending seven years as the province’s premier. “I have indeed been so, so lucky and it is very, very hard to say goodbye,” said Williams, who was on the verge of tears at the end of his news conference. He said the recent deal to develop the proposed Lower Churchill hydroelectric project in Labrador convinced him it was time to leave.

At the legislature surrounded by his caucus and supporters, he beamed at the province’s reinvigorated sense of self-worth since he came to power.

“I am most proud of our renewed pride as a people,” he said to applause. “I’m proud when I travel the country and meet expatriates who tell me what a difference it is now to be a Newfoundlander and Labradorian living on the mainland. Because those people who once thought we were the poor cousins of Confederation now see us as a province on the move.” His resignation comes before a provincial election scheduled for October. WikiLeaks to reveal further secret U.S. files

Stripper photos provoke debate

Space. Exploration

There will be no more free shows on the roof of a Toronto strip club after pictures of the scantily clad dancers surfaced online. Dancers at the Zanzibar Tavern regularly took breaks on the club’s roof while still in their work outfits. A Ryerson University librarian, Brian Cameron, took photos of the women from his office and published them Wednesday on Torontoist. Most of the photos were taken down from the site yesterday. Ottawa not privy to contents of leaked documents Canadian-U.S. tensions over Omar Khadr could intensify The U.S. government has notified Ottawa that the WikiLeaks website is preparing to release sensitive U.S. diplomatic files that could damage American relations with allies around the world. U.S. officials say the documents may contain accounts of compromising conversations with political dissidents as well as friendly politicians. A State Department spokesman said Wednesday the release of confidential communications about foreign governments probably will erode trust in the United States as a diplomatic partner “These revelations are

Great reformers? WikiLeaks bills itself as a website devoted to reforming governments worldwide by exposing their secrets. U.S. diplomatic outposts around the world have begun notifying other governments that WikiLeaks may release these documents in the next few days. Many of the cables are believed to date from the start of U.S. President Barack Obama’s administration.

‘Miracle’ rescue saves boys lost at sea 50 days

Rio. Gangs on the run

They caught fish and a seagull to survive As hope faded, the teens were eulogized in a memorial service They were given up for dead — and even eulogized in a memorial service. But now three teens missing in the South Pacific for 50 days have been found alive by a New Zealand fishing boat. The boys — two 15-yearolds and a 14-year-old — disappeared while attempting to row between two islands in the New Zealand territory of Tokelau in early October. All hope was lost after an extensive search involving New Zealand’s air force. Their craft had drifted 1,300 kilometres to a desolate part of the Pacific

Adrift 1,300 km The three teens were dehydrated, sunburned and very thin, rescuers said. They survived by catching fish and eating a seagull that landed on their boat. They come from the atoll of Atafu, one of three that make up the Tokelau island group, home to 1,500 people.

‘thank you very much for stopping,’” said Tai Fredricsen, first mate of the San Nikuna. “In a physical sense, they look very physically depleted, but mentally ... very high.” The boys, Samuel Pelesa and Filo Filo, both 15, and Edward Nasau, 14, were to be taken to hospital in Suva, Fiji’s capital, on Friday. The rescue came not a moment too soon: Fredricsen said they had begun to drink sea water because it hadn’t rained in the past few nights. “It’s a miracle, it’s a miracle,” said Tanu Filo, the father of one of the boys. But will thugs be caught napping? Elite police units in navy tanks rumbled through a heavily fortified Rio de Janeiro slum Thursday in a bid to catch drug gang leaders they blame for five days of violence. Meanwhile, scores of armed youths fled the shantytown for a nearby gang stronghold. At least 23 people have died since Monday.

Western LRT Corridor: Bayview to Baseline Station Planning and Environmental Assessment Study Public Open House and Presentation #1 The City of Ottawa is undertaking a planning and environmental assessment study for the Western Light Rail Transit Corridor (WLRTC), which will result in the expansion and improvement of the City’s rapid transit network within the study area shown on the accompanying map. In combination with the Downtown Ottawa Transit Tunnel, completion of the WLRTC will provide a continuous LRT corridor between Baseline Station in the west through downtown Ottawa and east to Blair Station. The WLRTC Study will be conducted in two phases to address the separate planning and environmental assessment requirements. The first phase will identify and evaluate alternative rapid transit corridors and result in the development of a recommended plan to replace the existing bus rapid transit system with Light Rail Transit (LRT) between Bayview Station and Baseline Station. A comprehensive and open process with the public and stakeholders will help determine the best rapid transit corridor and design for LRT. The second phase will involve an environmental assessment of the recommended plan to meet provincial and federal environmental assessment requirements. There will be on-going public consultation activities during both phases of the WLRTC study, including several Public Open House events. This first Public Open House will provide an overview of the work underway, including information on the existing socio-economic and natural environment within the study area, project need and justification, project planning objectives and design criteria, alternative transit corridors, transit technology, and the methodology proposed to evaluate alternative transit corridors. Your Input is Needed! Your participation in the planning phase is important. History repeating itself Current Afghan campaign eerily similar to failed Soviet operation

The Soviet Union couldn’t win in Afghanistan, and now the United States is about to have something in common with that futile campaign: nine years, 50 days. On Friday, the U.S.-led coalition will have been fighting in the country for as long as the Soviets did in their humbling attempt to build up a socialist state. The two invasions had different goals — and dramatically different body counts — but whether

HST referendum no later than June 24: Abbott Margaret MacDiarmid will assume education post Former education minister George Abbott believes he’s the best one to steer the B.C. Liberal government back toward public approval and he’s aiming part of his campaign on a speedier resolution to the HST debate. The four-term politician resigned his seat as education minister Thursday to become the second candidate in the race for Liberal leader and B.C. premier. “The B.C. Liberal government is at this point at a pretty low point in the ditch of public opinion,” he said. “I hope that the next bump we feel is the vehicle

coming out of the ditch and onto the road as we move forward.” Abbott said he’ll immediately move up the date of a referendum over the much maligned harmo-

nized sales tax so the issue can be dealt with once and for all. “If the HST is rejected by a simple majority, you’ll see a new budget in the fall, laying out the plan to extinguish the HST,” Abbott told a packed room of supporters in a Vancouver hotel for his announcement. South Korea dumps defence chief after attack Seoul prepares for more provocation from North Korea Even ruling party demanded dismissal DONG-A ILBO/GETTY IMAGES

South Korea's president Lee Myung-Bak ordered more troops to a frontline island and dumped his defence minister Thursday as the country grappled with lapses in its response to a deadly North Korean artillery strike. In scenes reminiscent of the Korean War 60 years ago, dazed residents of Yeonpyeong island foraged through blackened rubble for pieces of their lives and lugged their possessions down eerily deserted streets strewn with bent metal after Tuesday's hail of artillery. The barrage darkened skies, set off fierce blazes, killed four South Koreans and

Lee Myung-Bak

raised fears of an escalation that could lead to full-scale war. “It was a sea of fire,” resident Lee In-ku said, recalling the flames that rolled through the streets

of this island that is home to military bases as well as a fishing community famous for its catches of crab. The spit of land, just 11 kilometres from North Korea, had only six pieces of artillery. Despite warnings from North Korea that any new provocation would be met with more attacks, Washington and Seoul pushed ahead with plans for military drills starting Sunday involving a nuclear-powered U.S. aircraft carrier in waters south of this week’s skirmish. The exercises will likely anger the North but the South can little afford to abandon such preparation now. THE ASSOCIATED PRESS

Nearly free trips: Error or X-mas gift? Web surfers in disbelief over Expedia.ca flight deal Cases of flyers being paid to travel reported Expedia officials remain tight-lipped Thanks to the online travel company Expedia.ca, Colin Campbell will be doing his last-minute shopping in New York City this year and flying back into Toronto just in time for Christmas Eve. It wasn’t his plan all along, but when Expedia.ca offered him a return flight and a few days in a hotel for just $40 — all taxes included — how could he possibly refuse? Expedia won’t say whether the seemingly too-good-to-be-true offer that Campbell and other web surfers took advan-

The deal made an even bigger splash at Flyertalk.com, a forum dedicated to frequent flyers, where it spawned about 3,000 posts with more than 261,000 views.

ally paid travellers to fly — was the result of a pricing error. The promotion offered a $300 discount off a flight and hotel package to Cancun, Las Vegas, New York or Riviera Maya. It didn’t take long for Canadian web surfers to find packages for just over $300, making the trip almost free after the discount. “I wasn’t sure if it was a mistake or not but I did get an email from Expedia saying everything was booked. But I still wasn’t sure,” Campbell said.

“So I actually gave them a call and confirmed with a manager that it was in fact correct and it wouldn’t be cancelled.” While there was a limit of only one $300 discount per booking, there was no limit on how many separate discounted bookings could be made per person. And while the terms of the discount stated it was for “Canadian bookings only,” users the world over were still able to place orders. Expedia declined an interview request. THE CANADIAN PRESS

North American airlines enjoyed the strongest growth in passenger demand of the year in October as the global industry continued to recover from the 2008 financial and economic crisis. Passenger demand was up an average of 12.4 per cent among North American carriers last month compared with October 2009, the International Air Transport Association said Thursday. Capacity increased 11.9 per cent and North American airlines flew 82.5 per cent full, the highest load factor in the world. The region’s airlines are carrying two per cent more traffic than before the pre-recession levels of early 2008. Overall, global passenger traffic grew by 10.1 per cent in October, while

freight demand increased by 14.4 per cent from the prior year. “As we approach the end of 2010, growth is returning to a more normal pattern,” said IATA CEO Giovanni Bisignani. Passenger demand is five per cent above pre-crisis levels of early 2008, while freight is one per cent higher, he said. THE ASSOCIATED PRESS

MINUTES WITH:

CHARLES FORAN

Writer Charles Foran was in Ottawa to discuss his new biography of Mordecai Richler. Why did you decide to write about Mordecai Richler?

I wanted to write a big, rich book about a big, rich life. There was no other Canadian author whose life and work in combination was so full of stuff, and biographies take years, so you want to make sure your subject is engaging enough to sustain your interest. How long did it take?

It took four years with very minimal time off for good behaviour.

MICHAEL DE ADDER

Did you get a great deal of help from the family?

(Richler’s wife) Florence co-operated and was incredibly generous with her time and insights and memories, and criticisms — she was not uncritical of me or of Mordecai — without conditions. Florence wanted, I think, the same book I wanted, which is to say credible, big, full of life, like him. Montreal plays a significant part in the book.

It does. The first 100 pages are given over almost entirely to that city. Montreal is so fundamental to him as a person and as a writer.

person.

If there had to be one landmark or shrine of Mordecai’s Montreal, what do you think it would be?

Was there anything in your research you were surprised to find?

I think I would go for either the Maritime Bar at the Ritz Carleton. That’s where he liked to sit and stare at the political classes and the upper classes and plot and plan what he was going to write about. From the old neighbourhood, I think I would probably go for Baron Bing, the high school, which is now Sun Youth, that huge building on Saint-Urbain, because that’s where he really came into being as a

I think the greatest discovery I made was how much he was loved by his friends and family. The public face of Richler could be irascible and tough and intimidating and he either couldn’t or wouldn’t do anything about that. In private, the same words keep coming up, “Mordecai was a decent man,” the women would say he was “sweet.” Mordecai Richler, sweet. Wow. So that was an interesting discovery. STEVE COLLINS

Chocolate food fight No ‘pure chocolate’

MATT CARDY/GETTY IMAGES

Worth mentioning BELGIUM. There is no such thing as “pure chocolate,” the EU high court has ruled, ending an EU-Italy food fight over chocolate labels. The ruling by the Court of Justice of the European Union voided an Italian law that recognizes some delicacies as “pure chocolate.” The court said if a product is made from 100 per cent cocoa butter, that fact must be listed on the ingredients table only. It also said the EU’s 1999 chocolate labelling rules make no room for a “pure chocolate” reference like the one Italy enacted. Once vegetable fats are included in the produc-

tion of chocolate — a popular practice in some EU nations, notably Britain — then the label must say, “contains vegetable fats in addition to cocoa butter,” the court said. The EU labelling rules took effect in 1999 after a lively debate pitting countries like Britain — where chocolate usually contains vegetable fat substitutes

Being billed as a gay ghost story, this acclaimed film (and Peru’s official Oscar selection) follows Miguel, a married soon-to-be father and fisherman who is having a secret love affair with another man. His lover accidentally dies and comes back to haunt Miguel who is then forced to openly deal with who he is.

The Tourist (Dec. 10) The original French film, Anthony Zimmer, was critically acclaimed but flopped at the box office. Then again, it didn’t star Angelina Jolie. Or Johnny Depp. Or Angelina Jolie and Johnny Depp.

TRON: Legacy (Dec. 17) “There are no guarantees about TRON. It’s a sequel based on a cult film,” says film critic Dave White of Movies.com. “They’re anticipating a huge audience who never heard of the original — and Daft Punk fans.”

This week, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences announced its short list for documentary features. Here are some you can still see in theaters or check out on DVD: • Exit Through the Gift Shop • Gasland • Genius Within: The Inner Life of Glenn Gould • Inside Job • The Lottery • Restrepo • Waiting for ‘Superman’

Yogi Bear (Dec. 17) “Yogi Bear is essentially in the Alvin and the Chipmunks’ spot,” says Brandon Gray, publisher of BoxOfficeMojo.com. “It would be surprising if they could repeat that success. I don’t think Yogi Bear is as popular a property as the Chipmunks.”

Bhutto

This documentary, which has been making rounds at festivals around the world, takes a close look at one of the most captivating characters of our time: the assassinated Benazir Bhutto, the first woman to govern a Muslim nation. Elected after her father’s death, she fought against political corruption and radical Islam. DOROTHY ROBINSON AND MARIE-FRANCE PEREL

Gulliver’s Travels (Dec. 22) “Jack Black has a mixed track record. Gulliver’s Travels seems to want to be the new Night at the Museum, but it’ll probably be closer to Bedtime Stories, which was the last movie that tried to be the next Night at the Museum,” says Gray.

Little Fockers (Dec. 22) This seems a little out of left field. “The sequel wasn’t as highly regarded as the first. That, combined with the amount of time that has passed, might mean that this is where the franchise hits the wall,” says Gray.

True Grit (Dec. 25) It doesn’t necessarily matter. Coen brothers fans are deterred by nothing, and Matt Damon and Josh Brolin will bring the rest. Wait, TRON star Jeff Bridges is in this one, too? Merry Christmas to all.

Spokeswoman says Billy Joel is recovering from double hipreplacement surgery, doing well.

We’ve all heard those disclaimers at the end of pharmaceutical commercials: “May be harmful to humans if swallowed the most common side effects are temporary eyelid droop nausea decreased sweating avoid contact with skin.” Usually they sound like one long breathless sentence that seems scarier than the disease the drugs are meant to prevent.

A

for Viagra, it appears that the drug’s — Vitamin V, Jake calls it — only side effect is that it works too well. It is the rare movie that uses a real brand name drug as a plot device. Even though the odd movie like Prozac Nation dares to name names, often filmmakers use

fictitious drugs to advance their stories (and avoid lawsuits from the notoriously litigious Big Pharma). But even in fantasy side effects abound. Brain Candy, the 1996 Kids in the Hall comedy, created a cure for depression called GLeeMONEX that “makes you feel like it’s 72°F in your head all the time.” Unfortunately the pill’s patients also turn into comatose zombies. David Cronenberg devised Ephemerol, a tranquilizer used as a morning sickness remedy for his film Scanners. Side effects? Telekinetic and telepathic abilities. Later, in Naked Lunch, Cronenberg featured the more recreational drug Bug Powder, a yellow dust formally used by exterminators, informally by people looking to find a “literary high.” In Repo! The Genetic Opera, Paris Hilton’s character Amber Sweet was addicted to a blue, glowing opiate extracted from dead bodies called Zydrate. An alternative cinemat-

After a year that churned out Jonah Hex, Cop Out and The Box, no one is expecting Hollywood to explore the true meaning of the holidays or whatever helps angels earn their wings. But without even a Santa flick or slapstick mistletoe rom-com, we’ve got to wonder — how is Hollywood planning to cash in this year? It could be that, in 2010, audiences are too cynical about the season — or just queasy from hearing White Christmas since October. “People are getting sick of the commercialization of Christmas, says Wheeler Winston Dixon, professor of film studies at the University of Nebraska. “The few fairly recent iconic Christmas movies are mostly sarcastic takes on the holiday, as in Scrooged and Deck the Halls; films in which the holiday is something to be endured, rather than celebrated. But film critic Dave White of Movies.com

NED EHRBAR

I enjoyed myself on this. The highlight for me really was the sword action sequence with Kate (Bosworth), which was shot over about four days. That was just, from a choreography point of view, very exciting, physically demanding and a lot of fun to do.

I would go along with that, but also our hero is complex in this story. It has a wonderful sort of zen balance to it, this film, which I suppose is indicative as to where it comes from. The hero, in a way, has renounced violence. Our heroine needs violence to conquer her demons. But the violence in this film, for me personally, it’s so exquisite, so beautiful to look at, that it loses its violent impact. Unlike another film I did called the Proposition that was written by Nick Cave, which was very violent — a few people are killed in it. But this is on another level. It’s a ballet. It’s Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon. It has a beauty to it, which allows it to be quite accessible and ultimately not about violence but about love.

Villains seem to be the meatier roles in big movies.

Martial arts in the Old West is an interesting mix.

SCENE@METRONEWS.CA

Actor Danny Huston has been having a lot of fun playing bad guys lately, and his latest, the genre-bending martial arts-meets-Old West the Warrior’s Way, has him sinking his teeth into one of his baddest. Huston sat down with Metro to chat about ninjas in the Old West and getting back to directing. You seem to be enjoying yourself playing bad guys.

I didn’t know quite how the ninjas, all of that was going to work. It at times confused me, to be quite honest. But it’s almost like an opera. There’s a silence that Kurosawa and Ford shared, in your protagonist not necessarily having to express or emote his emotions, but for them to be contained. And Sergio Leone did the same thing, and I think our lead in this picture, our warrior, is extremely good at stillness and at being able to convey emotion without having to act it. Ninjas meet the Old West in the Warrior’s Way. Who would win in a fight, you or Kate?

Kate’s pretty damn good. She’s very athletic, she’s quite a crafty little swordsman. I also felt a little brutish from time to time because I am so much bigger. If I landed a punch or hit her

with one of those blades, which are big, with my weight behind it I could really hurt her. But if she started fighting with me, I think I would just lay down and let her do whatever she wished.

Will you be returning to directing soon?

I’m developing a film called Day of the Dead, which is based on a novel by a guy named Kent Harrington. I’ve been optioning this book for 10 or 15

years. It’s become a bad, costly habit. So I’ve got to get this thing made, and I’m looking to start production on it hopefully next year. I’m itching to get back in the saddle and direct again.

Brody sues over salary

Movie review 127 Hours Genre: Drama Director: Danny Boyle Stars: James Franco, Kate Mara, Amber Tamblyn 8888

Danny Boyle’s first film since Slumdog Millionaire earned a reputation for shock on the festival circuit where several audience members were dragged from the theatre after fainting. A plot synopsis will explain why: the film is about the true story of Aron Ralston, who in 2003 was trapped in a canyon for 5 days and was forced cut off his own arm to survive. Yes, the film is a grisly recreation of that painful reality, but it’s also every bit as pulse-pounding and uplifting as Slumdog. Frankly, it’s a better movie too. James Franco stars as Ralston and gives the best performance of his career, guiding the audience through the ordeal with a mixture of charm and raw emotion. Boyle does a remarkable job of keeping his one-man show tense and entertaining, using every directorial trick he’s

compiled over the years and an unrelenting soundtrack. 127 Hours is a remarkable work of survival horror with an inspirational bent and slick style that elevates it above most entries in that genre. Even if the concept seems in-

timidating, it’s worth the grueling experience. Boyle and Franco’s work is so strong that even the most squeamish member of the audience will be cheering for that damn arm to come off. PHIL BROWN

Adrien Brody says he was reluctantly forced to sue the makers of a thriller film because they failed to pay his full salary. U.S. District Judge Dale S. Fischer on Monday blocked the sale or use of Brody’s likeness in Giallo until the Oscar winner’s remaining salary is paid. The judge noted in her ruling that the actor was likely to prevail in his $2 million lawsuit against the filmmakers. “At no point did I ever wish to be involved in a legal dispute, but after over a year of attempting to resolve this matter I was left with no other alternative,” Brody said in a statement. The actor sued Hannibal Pictures and U.K.-based Giallo Productions Ltd. in October, shortly before Giallo went on sale in the U.S. In a sworn declaration, Brody claimed the filmmakers lied to him about the movie’s financing and how much its Italian distribution rights were worth. According to the law-

Adrien Brody

suit, he agreed to defer some of his salary payments after producers informed him the film was having financial problems. Brody was given the ability to withhold his likeness from the movie unless he was fully paid, and he is still owed $640,000, according to the suit. His attorney, Evan Spiegel, said the filmmakers “attempted to prey on Mr. Brody’s professionalism and generosity.” Spiegel said Brody agreed to defer his salary so fellow actors and the film’s crew could be paid. Solo stride THE CANADIAN PRESS/CHRIS YOUNG

Singer Cee Lo Green poses for a photo in a hotel as he promotes his new album The Lady Killer in Toronto on Monday, Nov. 22, 2010.

Cee-Lo finds his stride as a solo-artist with The Lady Killer Had labels’ blessing on viral hit CAM LINDSAY

SCENE@METRONEWS.CA

You always hear about artistic differences between artists and record labels, but if Cee-Lo Green knows anything, if you have the right song a label will back anything. He should know, he’s the guy who presented Elektra with a song called F— You. According to him, they didn’t even bat an eyelash. “I've been giving my label a lot of credit,” he says from the penthouse of a posh boutique hotel in Toronto. “There was just a unanimous ‘yes’ about this record, all throughout the building as soon as they heard it. With a title like that you can safely assume where it wouldn't

work as opposed to where it would, but they never gave up on this record.” Of course, a compromise was made in order to achieve this success. His label felt the song’s title and chorus would need to be cleaned up for mass consumption. But Cee-Lo was more than willing to co-operate. “Initially we did all of these alternative versions like Forget You, Eff You, I Could Have Loved You, Bump You, so we were prepared,” he explains. “My credibility and integrity are in tact,” he says. “There is a younger, adolescent audience that we would like to have as much of our material accessible to. But there's still the original, explicit version for adults.” This treaty between

artist and label has made Cee-Lo one of the most ubiquitous artists of 2010. Having previously tasted success both as an MC with Southern hip-hop crew Goodie Mob and a singer in the Danger Mouse collaboration Gnarls Barkley, The Lady Killer, his first new solo album in almost seven years, finds the booming crooner at his most accessible. Cee-Lo says returning to his solo work happened naturally. “It's simply carrying on,” he says. “There was no extended agenda, there's just more music in me. This particular creative direction I had yet to showcase, this more sensitive, sexual, romantic side. And I thought it was the right thing to do.”

An Important Notice Regarding Your Personal Health The Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care (MOHLTC) is working with Ontario’s health care providers to build a system in which your health care provider will have improved access to your personal health information including your laboratory test results. The collection, use and disclosure of your personal health information are subject to the Personal Health Information Protection Act (PHIPA) and this notice is being issued to provide you with information to help you to decide whether or not you want to share your information. The ministry is also subject to PHIPA.

For All Ontarians Currently, laboratories submit your test results back to the health care provider who ordered the test(s) and any other practitioner copied on a requisition form. However, there may be several other health care providers involved in your care, who would not have access to your laboratory test information. The Ontario Laboratory Information System (OLIS) is an electronic system that will allow hospital and community laboratories to share your lab test results with health care providers, and will be a component of the Electronic Health Record. As of mid-December 2010, the ministry will assume custody and control of patients’ laboratory test information that is submitted to and stored in OLIS. MOHLTC will then begin providing your test results to eHealth Ontario, to enable eHealth Ontario to share this information electronically with your health care providers. eHealth Ontario is the public agency that is working to deliver a secure and private electronic health care system for all Ontarians. As an agent of MOHLTC, eHealth Ontario can share this information electronically with any health care provider who delivers your health care in Ontario. MOHLTC will use and disclose your information only as permitted by law, and work to ensure that your information is secure and your privacy is respected.

Protecting Your Privacy Your privacy is important. As a patient, you can withdraw or reinstate your consent for MOHLTC and/or health care providers who have not ordered your laboratory tests to access your laboratory test information contained in OLIS. If you choose to withdraw your consent, MOHLTC and/or health care providers who have not ordered your laboratory tests will not have access to this information through OLIS. Choosing to withdraw your consent will in no way affect your relationship with your health care provider(s), who will continue to provide care to you.

Deciding Not to Share Your Information If you wish to withdraw or reinstate consent for MOHLTC or health care providers to access your test results submitted to OLIS, or for more information about this public notice, please call 1-800-291-1406 (TTY: 1-800-268-7095). For more information on OLIS, visit ontario.ca/yourhealthprivacy.

For Ontarians Living with Diabetes There are three key tests that people living with diabetes should receive on a regular basis. They are: • the HbA1C blood glucose control test, which patients should receive at least every six months; • the LDL-C cholesterol test, which patients should receive every year, and • a retinal eye exam, which patients should receive every two years. The Diabetes Testing Report was created to keep your primary care provider (physician or nurse practitioner) informed of when you last had each of these three tests. People living with diabetes who are tested regularly are better able to manage their diabetes and avoid complications. The Report will help you and your primary care provider better manage your diabetes care by reminding him or her if you are overdue for an HbA1C test, LDL-C test, or retinal eye exam, and it will encourage you and your primary care provider to talk about your diabetes care.

Protecting Your Privacy In order to create the Diabetes Testing Report, your primary care provider may share personal health information, including your name, health number and date of birth, with the MOHLTC. He or she will also confirm whether you have diabetes. In response, the MOHLTC will share the most recent dates of each of the three tests with your provider. Your privacy is important, however, and you are not required to have your information included in this report.

Deciding Not to Share Your Information You may decide that you do not want your primary care provider to disclose your information to the MOHLTC, and that you do not wish to be included in your provider’s Diabetes Testing Reports. If you choose to withhold or withdraw your consent, this will in no way affect your relationship with your health care provider and he or she will continue to provide care to you. If you wish to withhold or withdraw your consent to having your information disclosed by your primary care provider and in any Diabetes Testing Reports that MOHLTC sends to your primary care provider, call 1-800-291-1405 (TTY: 1-800-387-5559). If you withheld or withdrew your consent to have your information included on the Diabetes Testing Report in the Spring of 2010, you do not need to withhold or withdraw your consent again; if you wish to reinstate your consent, you can do so by calling the number above. For more information about the collection, use and disclosure of your personal health information for the purposes of the Diabetes Testing Report, call the numbers listed above. For more information about diabetes, visit ontario.ca/diabetes.

WILL HOLIDAY ALBUM SALES BE SAVED? Sound Check

ALAN CROSS SCENE@METRONEWS.CA

or people whose livelihoods depend on selling CDs, this Black Friday comes in a bleak year. Sales are down at least 11 per cent from last year and even digital music sales have reached some kind of ugly plateau. The fourth quarter of 2010 has been almost devoid of the big-name releases and breakout hits that can draw millions into record stores in the weeks leading up to Christmas. Sure, there have been a

couple—Taylor Swift’s Speak Now is the only certified smash having sold a million copies in its first week—but there’s been little else to celebrate. Who might come to the rescue? Certainly not rock records because there’s been a dearth of those. The ones we’ve seen— Kings of Leon, Linkin Park and Weezer, to name a few—have failed to deliver monster sales. So it’s up to pop, hip-hop and R&B to close the sales gap. Kanye West should have an excellent week thanks to the reviews he’s getting

for My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy, a CD that received an almost unheard-of 10/10 from the ever snarky Pitchfork. Expect it to be a healthy No. 1 debut when the numbers come out next Wednesday. It’s back to the Justin Bieber well again for My Worlds (Acoustic), out today. It’s essentially a rerecording of My World 2.0 and should do well after the Biebster’s showing on the American Music Awards last weekend. Tuesday, the Black Eyed Peas issue The Beginning, the follow-up to stupidly successful The E.N.D., the same day as new albums from Flo Rida and Soulja Boy hit shelves. That should provide an interesting three-way race. December 7 is also noteworthy with the release of No Mercy from T.I., who is again serving time in prison. That kind of street cred usually translates into sales.

A shadow political campaign or an attagirl for a struggling amateur? Bristol Palin’s success on this season’s Dancing With the Stars defies easy explanation. Either way, Bristol has something to brag about if talk at the Palin dinner table turns toward vote-getting ability. Just like her mom, Sarah, and her campaign for the vice presidency two years ago, however, Bristol fell short at the end. She finished third to

champion Jennifer Grey of Dirty Dancing fame during the ABC competition’s two-hour finale Tuesday. Runner-up was Disney Channel star Kyle Massey. Palin’s march, shimmy and cha-cha to the finals put Dancing With the Stars, of all programs, into the nation’s political cauldron. Clearly, Bristol drew support from many people who admire her mother, who frequently appeared in the show’s studio audi-

ence to root for her daughter. Bristol said Tuesday that if she won, “it would be like giving a big middle finger to people who hate my mom and hate me.” Sarah Palin supporters helped organize campaigns to keep her daughter on the show, like radio talk host Tammy Bruce’s Operation Bristol. Conservative blogger Kevin DuJan’s Hillbuzz.org website also led a get-out-the-vote effort and wrote after Tues-

day’s results that Palin “drove the Left crazy for three months. Score!” Bristol’s success only intensified the spotlight on Sarah Palin to an extraordinary degree for an outof-office politician, largely in ways that have nothing to do with politics. Besides the Dancing With the Stars exposure, Palin’s TLC series about Alaska is in the midst of airing, and she has a new book due out. THE ASSOCIATED PRESS

Cheesecake that’s more than dessert LARRY CROWE/ASSOCIATED PRESS

Blue cheese and less sugar give this cheesecake real presence at the end of your meal The goal — liberate cheesecake from the dessert course. And it was easier than we thought. While rich, creamy cheesecake is a fine way to end the meal, we didn’t think it had to be sweet to do so. We wanted a savoury cheesecake, one that could finish the meal as a cheese course. So we cut the sugar and substituted blue cheese for part of the cream cheese. Since blue cheese pairs so nicely with fruit, we added a topping of pears poached in red wine and balsamic vinegar. A black pepper-walnut crust accentuates the play on sweet and savoury. The combination is breathtakingly rich and satisfying, as well as visually stunning. Both the cheesecake and pears can be prepared a day or two ahead. The pears can be served warm, room temperature or chilled. To reheat the pears, place them and the syrup in a large saute pan and heat over low.

temperature, about 1 hour. Refrigerate for at least 4 hours (and up to 2 days) before serving.

To prepare pears, peel pears, then cut each half lengthwise. Scoop out and discard core.

In a deep saute pan, combine wine, vinegar, sugar and salt. Bring mixture to a simmer and add pears, core side down. Allow mixture to simmer until liquid is syrupy and pears are caramelized and tender, occasionally basting pears with liquid, about 20 minutes. Set aside to cool to room

temperature.

When ready to serve, run a knife around the edge of the springform pan to loosen cheesecake. Remove sides of pan. If desired, run a long spatula under the crust and slide the cake onto a serving plate. Top cheesecake with caramelized pears.

Many Canadians, particularly baby boomers aged 55 and older, women and highincome consumers, are avoiding what they perceive to be unhealthy foods at fast-food eateries, a new survey suggests. Many consumers simply choose to substitute where they can, such as replacing french fries with salad. THE CANADIAN PRESS

Are stars aligned for Als?

Grey’s anatomy Metro’s CFL columnist Dan Toth breaks down the matchups for this Sunday’s Grey Cup final, where Montreal will face Saskatchewan

Offence: Alouettes ALOUETTES

Time: 6 p.m. Sunday Channel: TSN

Everything seems aligned for the Montreal Alouettes heading into the Grey Cup game. Montreal finished the season atop the East Division to secure a first-round playoff bye with many figuring the club would have its hands full in the conference final if it met up with the Hamilton Tiger-Cats. After all, Hamilton dismantled the Alouettes 40-3 on Oct. 22 in a game that featured both teams’ starting players. So the thinking was Hamilton would dispatch the Toronto Argonauts in the semifinal, then head to Montreal full of confidence and be a real handful for the Alouettes. Well, it didn’t happen as Toronto beat the Ticats 16-13 before bowing out to the Als 48-17 in last weekend’s division final. That secured Montreal its eighth Grey Cup appearance since 2000. The expectation was the Alouettes would face the Calgary Stampeders, who posted a CFL-best 13-5 record to finish atop the West Division. But again, fate seemingly intervened as the Saskatchewan Roughriders upset Calgary 20-16 in the West Division final to advance to a Grey Cup rematch with Montreal on Sunday.

Defence: Roughriders

Teams are successful passing against the Alouettes but not rushing the ball. Defensive ends John Bowman and Anwar Stewart along with linebackers Chip Cox and Shea Emry can stop the run. The Als secondary surrendered 291 passing yards per game, second worst in the league.

The Roughriders had the second-worst run defence in the CFL this season but field one of the best pass defences. Despite losing John Chick and Stevie Baggs to the NFL after last year, they remain a formidable force. Defensive back James Patrick led the league with nine interceptions and Barrin Simpson had a CFL-best 104 tackles.

Special teams: Roughriders

The Alouettes had 2,807 return yards this season. Montreal’s Tim Maypray was third in return yardage and can boast three returns for touchdowns this season. Montreal kicker Damon Duval is a veteran punter and placekicker.

Edge: Riders

The Riders did not return any kicks for a touchdown. Riders kicker Luca Congi is out for the season leaving inexperienced Canadian Warren Kean to kick field goals. Edge: Als

Coaches: Alouettes Montreal head coach Marc Trestman insists his players have to think of Sunday’s game completely removed from last year’s game. “We don’t look at it as a rematch or a repeat. It’s a completely independent event with two completely different football teams.”

Coaches: Roughriders Saskatchewan coach Ken Miller is adamant his team isn’t looking for redemption after last year’s shocking Grey Cup loss to Montreal after a too-many-men penalty. “I’ve found through the years that (revenge) is a very poor motivator that’s based on emotion, not on intellect.”

“We’ve been very fortunate to get back and win it a couple of times, but man, we keep telling these young guys ‘Listen, this doesn’t happen all the time. We’re in a unique situation.’” ALS QB ANTHONY CALVILLO, ON PLAYING IN THE GREY CUP FINAL SEVEN TIMES

Singapore has rebuked its national water polo team for wearing swim trunks that feature an “inappropriate” likeness of the city-state’s flag. The trunks, which were designed by members of the men’s team currently competing in the Asian Games in Guangzhou, China, show the flag’s white crescent moon jutting up from the groin area with five stars to the side on a red background. COWBOYS

Drew Brees and the New Orleans Saints recovered from blowing a 17-point lead by marching 89 yards for a go-ahead touchdown with 1:55 left to pull out a 30-27 victory over the Dallas Cowboys on Thursday. Dallas kicker David Buehler nearly tied it with a 59-yard field goal in the final half-minute. The kick had plenty of distance, but fluttered wide left. The Saints (8-3) were up 17-0 after three series and 20-3 just before halftime. But the Cowboys scored on four straight possessions to get close, then went ahead 27-23 on Tashard Choice's short touchdown run with 5:51 left. THE ASSOCIATED PRESS

Brady’s bunch of TDs lifts Pats

Wes Welker of the Patriots carries the ball as Louis Delmas of the Lions gives chase on Thursday.

Tom Brady was perfect on the field and his exit was first class. Brady threw a seasonhigh four touchdown passes, all in the second half, and the New England Patriots routed the Detroit Lions 45-24 on Thursday after trailing by 11 late in the second quarter. “We showed some resiliency, coming out in the second half and playing the way we did when the crowd was into it,” Brady said. Following Brady’s brief news conference, the former Michigan star jogged out of Ford Field — limping slightly up a steep ramp — hugged Robert Kraft and got into an idling

limo with the team owner behind a police escort. New England (9-2) moved a half-game ahead of the AFC East rival New York Jets — who played Cincinnati on Thursday night — for the NFL’s best record, setting up a showdown at home Dec. 6. “I don’t think we’re at where we need to be at,” Brady said. “But this is a tough group.”

No one in the red, white and blue is tougher than Brady. After taking a ton of shots early in the game, the three-time Super Bowl winner and two-time MVP bounced back to complete 21 of 27 passes for 341 yards with no interceptions, giving him a perfect quarterback rating of 158.3 for the second time in his career. “He’s like a surgeon,” Detroit centre Dominic Raiola said. Brady threw a go-ahead touchdown pass to Deion Branch early in the fourth quarter after connecting with him on a 79-yarder to tie it at 24. THE ASSOCIATED PRESS

Today’s horoscope Aries March 21-April 20 Do you trust your ideas? You should do, because you are head and shoulders above everyone else in your ability to imagine the future.

Taurus April 21-May Your star is very much on the rise at the moment and when Venus, your ruler, changes signs early next week you’ll be flavor of the month with just about everyone. Gemini May 22-June 21 Don’t let anyone try to convince you that certain targets are beyond your abilities to reach. They know it isn’t true, which is why they are trying to convince you it is.

Cancer June 22-July 22 Something you are told today will ring true even though you would prefer not to believe it.

Leo July 23-Aug.23 The Sun in your fellow Fire sign of Sagittarius promises that you will get what you want no matter how many people try to stand in your way. You’re a Leo. You’re a winner.

Virgo Aug. 24- Sept. 22 A feud that has been dragging on for some time is beginning to wear you down, so why not end it? Libra Sept. 23-Oct. 23 If your aims and ambitions are a bit vague now is the ideal time to sit down and decide what it is you want and how you intend

to get it.

Scorpio Oct. 24-Nov. 22 Today’s aspect between the Sun and your ruler Pluto will boost your confidence in some small but significant way and before you know it you will be moving in a new direction, one that’s really quite exciting – and profitable too.

Sagittarius Nov. 23-Dec. 21 You have com-

plete and utter faith in your own abilities. The idea of failure will not enter your mind at any stage today. With that kind of self-belief you can move mountains. Moving other people though might be more of a challenge.

Capricorn Dec. 22-Jan. 20 You’re in one of your “leave

Caption contest

me alone” moods today, and if friends and co-workers have any sense they will stay out of your way for a bit.

Aquarius Jan. 21-Feb. 18

“Hey, have you seen final destination? ”

No matter how good your latest idea may be you still have to get out there into the marketplace and sell it to the people who matter. Email ten contacts whose backing could make you a star. Do it right now.

Pisces Feb. 19-March 20 You are now within touching distance of a goal you have been working towards for many months, but for some reason you are suddenly scared. Why? Fear of failure is one thing, but fear of success? Get over it – it’s coming. SALLY BROMPTON
