Skye Halifax saw its share of lovers and haters at Thursday night’s public input session at Dalhousie University. “It feels like too much in one spot and I don’t think the market is going to support that,” said Halifax resident Lisa Roberts. Paul MacKinnon, with the Downtown Halifax Business Commission, said while they’re pro-development, they’re against this one since it is so contrary to HRMbyDesign. “We still believe in HRMbyDesign and we need to see this through,” he said. Jennifer Tsang, a consultant for United Gulf, told the crowd of about 80 people the building would produce $6 million a year in property taxes to HRM and the people who live there would spend $16 to $20 million on goods and services in the area. “We think the old and new can coexist,” Tsang said, As for the Citadel sightlines, she asked the crowd how often they actually go to the Citadel. “What’s the rule for? Is it to benefit the tourists?”

In February, HRM staff recommended council reject the proposal because it’s over twice the allowable height allowance for the area and would encroach upon the sightline from the Citadel to the harbour and the sky from the ramparts. No interest in reopening rent-control debate: NDP Housing issue. Downtown councillor requesting HRM staff report on pros and cons of issue

Premier Darrell Dexter RYAN TAPLIN/METRO
Premier Darrell Dexter says he has no desire to reopen the issue of rent control for the Halifax Regional Municipality. Speaking to reporters on Thursday, Dexter said the provincial government’s focus is on the availability of affordable housing, rather than limiting rent increases. “The housing market, if it’s robust and if you have people building more units, the access to those units is actually what drives down the cost,” Dexter said. “What you don’t want to do is create a situation where you’re … filling up the units and nobody has any incentive to build anymore. That would be, in my view, a mistake.” Dexter said he sees both advantages and disadvantages to rent control — noting that, without the ability to raise rents, some landlords would not have an incentive to improve units.
Dexter was responding to Downtown Coun. Dawn Sloane’s request for a municipalstaff report on the issue after she said she’s been getting complaints from many people in her district about large jumps in the cost of rent. “We need to have more housing stock that’s affordable, but, again, what does affordable mean?” Sloane said. Sloane said she wasn’t discouraged with the premier’s reluctance. “It still means that we need a report to see if it would help or hinder the centre plan,” said Sloane. “I’m looking at this as a municipal councillor who has seen people leave the downtown and peninsular area because they can’t afford to live here anymore .... I think we’ve just started to see the beginning of this.”

New law would measure handwashing rates All Nova Scotia health authorities would have to report hand-washing rates to the province’s Health Department and make them public under legislation proposed Thursday.
Health Minister Maureen MacDonald said the province’s nine health boards already monitor hand-washing rates and report to a national safety body, but there is no uniform reporting method in order to compare rates within Nova Scotia. MacDonald said the province’s health system needs to do a better job of measuring hygiene rates. THE CANADIAN PRESS
The province’s health minister says she’s “disappointed” in the Nova Scotia Nurses Union for criticizing staffing levels at collaborative emergency centres. Maureen MacDonald said a lot of consultation, including talks with the NSNU, went into developing the province’s much-touted CECs. “I’m disappointed in the statement from the nurses’ union,” MacDonald told reporters on Thursday. “We worked very hard to establish CECs to ensure that they are safe and effective in terms of the care they provide in their local communities.” Spending scandal
MacKinnon pleads not guilty to fraud A former Liberal cabinet minister pleaded not guilty Thursday to charges of fraud, breach of trust and uttering forged documents in the province’s spending scandal. Russell MacKinnon was one of four Nova Scotia politicians charged in February
Janet Hazelton, the president of the NSNU, sent out a press release on Thursday claiming that nurse-topatient ratios at the CECs are making for unsafe working conditions for her members. The CECs, a big part of the NDP’s health-care strategy, are staffed by one registered nurse and one paramedic under the supervision of a Capital Health physician. Hazelton would like to see two nurses working at any given time. “We are confident that, working with EHS and our paramedic colleagues, the two-nurse model will allow for safe and appropri2011 following an investigation into constituency allowance spending. His trial is set for March 2013. Chester Basin. Student suspended five days for sporting Jesus shirt A Grade 12 student from Chester Basin has been suspended for wearing a T-shirt publicizing his religious beliefs. The South Shore Regional School Board suspended William Swinimer from Forest Heights Community School in Chester Basin for five days for wearing a shirt emblazoned with the words, “Life is wasted without Jesus.” School board Supt. Nancy Pynch-Worthylake said the wording on the shirt is problematic because it is directed at the beliefs of others. “If I have an expression that says ‘My life is enhanced with
Jesus,’ then there’s no issue with that, everybody is able to quickly understand that that’s my opinion about my own belief,” she said. “If the shirt were to say ‘Without Jesus, your life is a complete waste,’ then that’s clear that it is an opinion aimed at somebody else’s belief.” Pynch-Worthylake said the school has spoken with Swinimer a number of times about the shirt, asking him not to wear it again. Varrick Day, the pastor at Swinimer’s Pentecostal church, said the young man feels that his religious freedom is being

Mother of bullying victim calls legislation weak The mother of 15-year-old girl who committed suicide last year after being bullied implored the Nova Scotia government to strengthen its proposed legislation to combat cyber-bullying, saying the bill lacks “meat.” In an emotional appeal before the legislature’s law amendments committee, Pam Murchison said the bill doesn’t do anything to stop the activities of bullies on the Internet. Murchison spoke of her despair over the ongoing problems with bullying since her daughter’s death and her sense that nothing is being done. “Should each of you walk two steps in my shoes you would understand the anger and frustration that I have.” Murchison, whose daughter Jenna died in January

The bill requires schools to collect and monitor data before the government comes out with specific measures to deal with bullying, and there’s no time
frame on when that may happen. Const. Todd Taylor of Truro police told the committee that while research and tracking are important, officers don’t have the tools to address the problem. Taylor said the bill should at least include a provision to allow police and Internet service companies to develop a protocol through which police can access information during the investigation of bullying cases. The protocol recommendation was included in a task force report on cyberbullying that was released in March. “I saw nothing or heard nothing in the bill that addresses the concerns that Nova Scotia families have today,” said Taylor. the canadian press

New legislation would give the province the power to send “educational materials” on responsible cellular use directly to your phone. But industry representatives and opposition parties are concerned the provision could be used to transmit partisan political messaging to cellphone users. Amendments to the Consumer Protection Act, introduced on April 27, mostly concern rules around cellphone contracts. But one section requires cellular providers to transmit, “at no additional cost to the customer, educational materials about responsible cellular telephone use, including cyberbullying, immediately after the contract is made.” That led the Progressive Conservatives to invoke the spectre of Big Brother. “Our primary concern is about a grab for power by the NDP to push out propaganda messages on all of our cellphones,” Tory Leader Jamie Baillie told reporters on Thursday. “We do not want the NDP to have that power with our

cell phones.” While the language of the amendments clearly states the “educational materials” are about “responsible cellular telephone” use, it does not explicitly limit the government to that. Service Nova Scotia and Municipal Relations Minister John MacDonnell said he didn’t think the language needed tightening up, but he’d be open to suggestions. “The intent was for cyberbullying information,” said MacDonnell. “I think, if we were ever thinking of using it in some other way, I think we should go back to the people on that one ... glad to look at it, but I’m thinking it’s not an issue.” The Liberal’s Andrew Younger doesn’t think it would be an issue — for any government besides the Nova Scotia New Democrats. “I think it’s only a big deal because we’ve seen a trend lately of the NDP using taxpayer dollars for partisan advertising,” Younger said.
Halifax. Land of Hobo with a Shotgun, but not hobo cops Halifax hobo cops? Not likely. Police departments in several cities across Canada — including Moncton, N.B. — have successfully employed a new undercover tactic to catch drivers on their cellphones. It involves police offers dressing up as panhandlers or squeegee kids to peek in cars to see if drivers are on their cellphones. Then they either hand out tickets right there or signal to their colleagues down the road. According to media reports, driver reaction is mixed: everything from complaining of entrapment to thumbs-up for catching distracted drivers.

“If the well was to run dry and we weren’t giving any tickets, then we might entertain tha. But right now we don’t have any plans on doing that.” Const. Holly Smith
Const. Holly Smith with Halifax Regional Police said they have no problem handing out tickets to drivers on their cellphone — with uniformed officers. “Last month we had 139 tickets issued by the integrated traffic units for cell phone infractions then we had an additional 22 issued by patrol members,” she said.
“Even though you’re dressed up as a ‘hobo cop’ or if you’re in uniform, people are just not getting the message they can’t talk on their cell phones.” She added police encourage people to report drivers on their cellphones by writing down a description of the driver and the car along with the license plate. Brandy Dunfield knows a thing or two about concussions. The 18-year-old plays basketball for Sackville High School, and has been playing softball since she was 10. Over the course of her sports career, she’s seen teammates fall victim to concussions, and she’s been hit in the head herself, with elbows and a bat. “I’ve never had a diagnosed concussion, but I’m sure I’ve had one,” she said.

Students at Gorsebrook Junior High weren’t afraid to ask Justin Trudeau some tough political questions on Thursday. Fresh off a delayed fight from St. John’s, the Liberal MP continued his Atlantic tour with a Thursday speech about youth leadership before taking questions from the junior high crowd. After answering one student’s question about Katimavik — a social program started by his father’s government in 1977 that has been cut from the federal budget — another student asked what Trudeau thought about Prime Minister Stephen Harper. “To my mind, he spends a lot of time worrying about what the people who vote for him think, and not enough time thinking about the rest of Canadians,” he said. “For me, the prime minister is supposed to be the prime minister of all Canadians.” Trudeau later told Metro he stays “away from anything partisan. I didn’t even like answering that question about Stephen Harper.... It’s much more about getting them to think about the kind of world they want, and how they can express themselves.” Other stops on Trudeau’s tour include Liberal MP Geoff Regan’s general meeting as well as two more schools and a seniors’ home in Sydney on Friday. Phoenix is celebrating its 25th year of operation with a musical tribute Friday night at the Cunard Centre. What started as Phoenix House has grown into 11 programs in nine locations in Halifax for those aged 12 to 24. There’s a 20-bed emergency shelter, centre for youth for guidance and health services, community development, therapy, as well as arts and recreation programs. She walked through the doors at Phoenix House in 1999 at age 16. “She had to move away from her hometown to get away from her habits and triggers that would make her relapse,” Cowie said. For one boy, his life changed irrevocably over a can of tuna. “He said his parents were struggling, living in poverty and he had two younger siblings,” said Crystal Cowie, a director at Phoenix in Halifax. “One afternoon he opened a can of tuna and ate it. When his parents came home to make supper, that was the supper for the family.” The parents made a gutwrenching decision: they couldn’t afford to keep their 16-year-old son. “They actually drove him to our steps and dropped him off,” she said. “I couldn’t imagine as a parent making that decision

Backing for gas regulation falling among residents Fuel. Most HRM citizens still support government control, but not as many as before, poll finds by the numbers
Rick Emberley halifax@metronews.ca
Support for gas regulation appears to be waning. According to a survey of HRM residents, the number of people who think government regulation of gas prices is a good thing has fallen by almost 20 percentage points. Support for the idea has dropped from 82 per cent a couple of years ago to 63 per cent now. At the same time, support for regulation of homeheating fuel and electricity has

risen slightly from 76 per cent to 79 per cent. Of those people who continue to feel regulation is needed, a significant majority (81 per cent) are more concerned about companies taking unfair advantage than the actual cost. Our research also shows that concern over heating fuel and electricity is greater than concern over the price of gasoline. Almost 70 per cent say heatingfuel and electricity costs impact their household budgets more substantially than gas prices. And 79 per cent of respondents feel that they can reduce gas consumption in periods of
high prices, but it is more difficult to do that when it comes to heating their homes. How are people coping with current high prices at the gas pump? Most, 65 per cent, say they are cutting back in other areas of household spending and 71 per cent are trying various forms of conservation. A whole host of conservation methods are being used: — 43 per cent say they are driving less or switching to more fuel-efficient cars. — About 60 per cent have done home renovations. — 19 per cent have started to use public transit or carpooling. — Just over 70 per cent are buying energy-efficient appliances. Rick Emberley is senior counsel with the polling firm MQO Research. He has conducted public-opinion research in the region for over 25 years.

Picnicface not going down without a fight

A local stand-up and sketchcomedy troupe is asking Halifax to stand up in support. The eight members of Picnicface were told last week that their namesake television show, which was broadcast by Bell Media’s Comedy Network, would not be renewed for a second season. But the group isn’t giving up. Through viral videos and social media, Picnicface has quickly built a groundswell of
support. In the first two hours, an online petition — at savepicnicface.com — accrued over 1,000 signatures. “We hope we can mobilize that loyal and feisty fan base that we have,” said Evany Rosen, one of the troupe’s members. She hopes that the show finds a home, either with the Comedy Network or elsewhere. “There’s always a chance, if we get a lot of support.” Though Rosen was dis-
appointed when she learned the show wasn’t being renewed, she wasn’t completely surprised. “It’s a hard time to be making TV in Canada,” she said. “Bell is looking to make Canadian content that’s more reality shows and game shows, which can be great too, but we believe sketch comedy has an important role in Canadian television and deserves to stay alive.” adrian lee/for metro

Morgan Freeman. Student Tuition hike. Numbers filmmakers pursue actor behind Quebec debate A catastrophic hard drive failure has led a pair of film school students on an epic odyssey to convince Hollywood icon Morgan Freeman to narrate their project Ian MacDougall and Mackenzie Warner, his classmate at Simon Fraser University, had a week to track him down. MacDougall heard Freeman would be the MC at a blues concert in Clarksdale,
Mississippi. Bill Luckett, who co-owns the bar with Freeman there, heard their story and agreed to call Freeman on his cell phone and make the pitch. The answer? Freeman chuckled, and said they’d have to talk to his agent before he could commit to anything. They still hope to get Freeman’s participation in narrating the documentary about finding him. the canadian press
Tuition has been mostly frozen in Quebec for 43 years, but there is little evidence this has increased university enrolment. Only about 30 per cent of Quebec’s young people go to university — six percentage points less than the national average, according to a study published by the Higher Education Quality Council of Ontario. Atlantic Canada has a 50 per cent enrolment rate
— even though average tuition fees there are roughly double that of Quebec’s. The study suggests the cost of tuition does not have a noticeable effect on university enrolment rates, but that the most important factor for enrolment rates is actually generational. Young people are more likely to go to university if their parents did, regardless of income.

Witnesses detail island shootings Breivik’s massacre. Ferry captain describes his ‘angst and full panic’ after mass murderer began Utoya island slaughter Witnesses in Norway recounted Thursday how mass murderer Anders Behring Breivik — armed and in police uniform — managed to trick his way onto a ferry to Utoya island, where he massacred 69 people in a shooting spree just hours after killing eight people in a bomb attack. Jon Olson, captain of the MS Thorbjoern ferry, told the Oslo District Court about his “angst and full panic” as he frantically tried to contact police about the island attack after his ferry had docked at Utoya. Breivik has admitted to the bombing in Oslo’s government district and the subsequent shootings at a Labor Party youth camp on Utoya. He claims the July 22 attacks were “necessary” and that the 77 victims had betrayed Norway by embracing immigration. Olson, who lost his partner, Monica Boesei, the second person to die in the shootings, said neither he nor his crew suspected the uniform-clad Breivik to be anything other than a police officer.
Norway
Breivik has earlier said that being declared insane would be the worst thing that could happen. It would “delegitimize” his views. Investigating officers told how the heavily armed killer shot his victims, beginning with a security official on the island and then 68 others, mostly the youth who were participating in the summer retreat. Breivik’s weapons included a Ruger Mini-14 Ranch rifle, equipped with a bayonet; a pistol and more than 1,000 rounds of ammunition. He was also carrying a gas mask, a tourniquet, flashlight and three chocolate bars when he arrived on the island, police said. Since he has admitted his actions, Breivik’s mental state is the key issue for the trial to resolve. If found guilty and sane, Breivik would face 21 years in prison, although he can be held longer if deemed a danger to society. If declared insane, he would be committed to compulsory psychiatric care. In earlier court sessions, Breivik has coldly described the meticulously planned attacks in highly gruesome detail. the associated press

Furor widens over Tymoshenko
Jailed ex-premier of Ukraine Yulia Tymoshenko says she was punched by prison guards who were taking her to hospital. the associated press
German Chancellor Angela Merkel urged Ukrainian leaders on Thursday to give jailed ex-premier Yulia Tymoshenko “proper treatment” for her ailments, as more top officials announced they would boycott the Euro 2012 soccer championship co-hosted by Ukraine. Merkel insisted that she had not yet decided whether to stay away from the matches in Ukraine, but said her priority now was the former leader’s health. Euro 2012 is the continent’s most prestigious soc-
cer tournament, taking place only once every four years. The dispute over Tymoshenko, Ukraine’s top opposition figure, is coming as a big blow to the country’s hopes of using the tournament to boost tourism and trade with the 27-nation European Union. Ukraine, which is not in the EU, is cohosting with EU member Poland. Tymoshenko, 51, is on a hunger strike to protest alleged mistreatment. She claims guards punched her. the associated press

Wallet found 63 years later helps to reunite family Lost and found. Blog post helps track down billfold owner’s family, which was sealed inside antique cabinet matt kieltyka
Metro in Vancouver
The discovery of a 63-year-old wallet in Whistler, B.C., has bridged generations, connected families and given store owner Lorna Van Straaten one amazing story to tell. The owner of Whistler’s Re-Build-It Centre found the wallet, belonging to a Donald Milford Townsend of Burbank, Calif., in a sealed compartment of a fetching black antique cabinet she had just sold. The contents — including a driver’s licence, union card, family photos and a silver coin — astounded her and sent her on a memorable quest to find the man’s family.
A postage stamp and blood-donor card were among items recently found in a wallet in Whistler dating back to 1949. contributed/Lorna Van Straaten
“Some of the things we find (in her two antique shops) are beyond description. “We get lots of really cool items, but in terms of family sentimental value this tops them all,” Van Straaten told Metro. The store owner posted the contents of the wallet and her story on her blog, reuseitwhistler.blogspot.com, in an attempt to track down Townsend’s family. Within a day, Van Straaten had been able to connect with

Aside from being an astounding find, the wallet ended up reuniting the relatives. “They had been out of touch for a while and they told me this has reunited them on a level,” said Van Straaten. “It’s really a feel-good story about family and connection and the power of the Internet. Without it, I would have never found (the family).” The wallet, its contents and the cabinet are now being returned to the family.

Rio” campaign, focuses first on downtown Rio and the city’s wealthy southern zone that includes posh beach neighbourhoods such as Copacabana and Ipanema. Eventually it will spread throughout the city of 6 million people. The first targets were three billboards for a camera company, a bank and a make of cars perched on top of a
13-floor building in front of Guanabara Bay and near the Santos Dumont airport. Signs with the names of banks, restaurants, shopping malls and stores are allowed, but cannot exceed 10 square meters. The owners have six months to adapt their signs. If they don’t they will be slapped with a daily fine of $297 (U.S.).

Saving a life — one tweet at a time Finding a donor. Woman with genetic condition believes social media can help spread the word about donating bone marrow lia grainger For Metro
Cristina Di Corte remembers the day she found out she had mitochondrial neurogastrointestinal encephalopathy — it was the same day she learned that a bone marrow transplant could save her life. It was also the beginning of an ambitious coast-to-coast social media campaign to find a donor match. “It was really scary to finally find out what I have,” says the 22-year-old Mississauga native of that day last November. If you’ve never heard of the disease, also known by its acronym MNGIE, you’re not alone. The genetic condition has only ever been diagnosed in 70 people worldwide and is so rare that most doctors have never heard of it. Di Corte first started noticing symptoms when she was 17, but it would be four years
before she was accurately diagnosed. The condition affects the muscles that move material through the digestive system, so much of what Di Corte ate would sit in her system and rot. A hairdresser at Erin Mills Town Centre, she became so exhausted that she was unable to work. “I was nauseous, throwing up, and had horrible stomach pains,” says Di Corte. Already a naturally slim woman at 98 pounds, her weight dropped to as low as 68 pounds. A series of doctors and specialists misdiagnosed her with irritable bowel syndrome, tested her for celiac disease and colon cancer, and even sent her to a clinic for people with eating disorders. To finally be able to name the disease was little comfort though, as it came with the news that she would need a bone marrow transplant. “I basically need it as soon as possible,” says Di Corte, who now receives nutrients through a central catheter line and is back up to 80 pounds. Unfortunately, her mother, father and brother are not matches. Di Corte is registered with OneMatch.ca, a stem cell and marrow donor network, but they warned her that the list is long.
OneMatch.ca
All that’s required to register with Canada’s stem cell and marrow network is a simple, non-invasive cheek swab — and you don’t even need to see a doctor to do it. • Individuals can go to OneMatch.ca and order a free swab kit. A YouTube video explains how to take the swab and then the samples are simply popped back in the mail, postage paid.
That’s when her older brother had an idea. “He was like, why don’t we put this on Facebook?” says Di Corte. A Facebook event asked friends and family to tweet #hopeforcristina on Twitter every Wednesday at 6 p.m., and the call has been a trending topic in Canada three times. She also has her own website, Helpingcristina.org, and it wasn’t long before Di Corte was telling her story on Citytv. “I think if more young people knew about OneMatch and how easy it is to be tested, they would register,” says Di Corte. “You could save someone’s life.”

RIM shares plunge to 2003 level Market. BlackBerry maker’s shares plunge to below $12 in the three days following initial preview of new operating system The Canadian company that revolutionized the mobile phone industry spent a very expensive week trying to sell the idea that the BlackBerry isn’t a dying technology, only to see its share price close Thursday at its lowest level in nearly a decade. Research In Motion stock fell 72 cents, or 5.7 per cent, to close at $11.91 on the Toronto Stock Exchange. It hasn’t been below $12 since 2003. Thursday’s plunge marked three days of declines that began after the Waterloo, Ont., tech giant gave a first glimpse of its much-anticipated new operating software at its annual developer conference in Orlando, Fla.
The BlackBerry 10 OS prototype was handed to developers in the hope of getting them onside and writing applications for the system, but it won’t hit the market for several months. RIM’s shares have fallen some 15 per cent since Tuesday’s reveal of the operating system. At its height the stock was trading at more than $144 in 2008, when RIM was briefly the most valuable company on the Toronto Stock Exchange. During the conference, RIM chief executive Thorsten Heins was forced to confront rumours that the new Black-

The confusion arose after Heins unveiled the new operating system and focused on some flashy features available to touchscreen users, but didn’t address any future plans for keypad devices. Some reports suggested the company would completely ditch the physical keys that helped build its name and are favoured by many of its users. “We won’t lose the focus on physical keypads. It would be wrong, just plain wrong to do this,” Heins said. The canadian press

Same old story: You know the one — lady’s Mike Benhaim philandering husband Metro spends all her money, then leaves for a hotter, richer woman. Spurned lady spends a year feeling dirty and used, and just when she’s begun to move on, he returns with flowers and playful charms. Still vulnerable, she crumbles, and her friends throw up their arms saying, “He’s not even that good looking.” In other news, Conrad Black returns to Canada. Let it be written: As an example of necessity being the “mother of invention,” researchers at Arizona State University have released a list of “commandments” for Facebook. Issues covered by the rules: acknowledging postings to your page by clicking “Like,” inappropriate “poking” (never wise), and posting pictures of friends from a debauched weekend in Vegas. My favourite edict, not limited to FB, is “Thou shalt use common sense,” which, ironically, supersedes a need for the list to begin with. Carrot caution: A study released Wednesday out of Ohio University has found that consuming excessive amounts of beta carotene might not be good for you. Contrary to what we’ve been told for centuries, it can block some effects of vitamin A critical to vision, skin health, metabolism and immune function. Vision? It goes to show you just can’t trust your mom anymore. Playing hardball: Two years after Victoria’s Secret combined two of men’s favorite things by releasing their line of baseball-themed lingerie, they introduce the Blue Jays collection. With two types of sexy briefs (one leopard print), and two skimpy tees, they’ve given new meaning to the phrase “Sliding into home.” United we stand: Canadian awards shows the Genies and the Geminis, are joining forces to create just one allencompassing program. This is great news for apathetic Canadians who now only have to not watch one show. Labour days: Jessica Simpson has given birth to a 22inch, nine-pound, 13-ounce baby girl. This explains the tremendous baby bump that prompted pregnant Jersey Shore star Nicole “Snooki” Polizzi to say, “I’d die if I ever got that big.” Aw, Snooki, we don’t want you to die. We just want you to go away. Gone. Hoops! My bad: Some are saying the stress of the condensed NBA season has resulted in a post-season riddled with injuries. None more symbolic than when Knicks’ Amare Stoudemire tempered the burning flames of his competitive passion after a brutal loss to Miami by punching a fire extinguisher. Someone might have mentioned requiring the hand to play out the series. Surprisingly, Amare skipped college to go pro. Canadian courtship: Our nation’s first TV Bachelor is CFL wide receiver Brad Smith, who can’t wait to meet all the wonderful women who will join him in this consummate quest for love. He seeks independent, intelligent women who are “just as confident in a ponytail and sweats as they are all dressed up.” And adds that highmaintenance women turn him off. Relax, Brad. Work of art sells for historic price New York. Edvard Munch’s The Scream made history on Wednesday night when it became the most expensive piece of art ever sold at auction. After a fierce bidding war at Sotheby’s New York, the 1895 pastel went to an anonymous buyer for $119.9 million US. The auction house was thrilled at the “historic” price on a night when sales topped $330 million US.
Simon Shaw, the head of impressionist and modern art for Sotheby’s, said the painting was a good deal. “If ever there was a work of art of true shock and awe, it is Edvard Munch’s The Scream, which is not only one of the seminal images from art history, but also one of the visual keys to the modern consciousness.” The work is one of four versions by the Norwegian expressionist artist and was the only one still privately owned. It is regarded as the most prized of the four as a poem written by the artist is on the frame. metro

RICHARD CROUSE AND MARK BRESLIN
Putting the ‘super’ in superhero films Roundup. Richard Crouse and Mark Breslin dish on their favourite vigilante features Richard: Mark, even though the ads guaranteed I would believe a man could fly, I’m not sure that my fifteen-year-old self actually thought Christopher Reeve was circling the earth in Superman: The Movie, but I do know I thought it was cool. And still do. I’ve seen it dozens of times and its blend of humour, action and nostalgia is worth its weight in Kryptonite. Mark: The first Superman movie was the platinum standard in superhero films: graceful, even poetic. The sequels ruined its goodwill, but the quality of the original cannot be denied. But
I think the world can be divided into two kinds of people: Superman people and Batman people, and I, Richard, seem to be a Batman person. Even the weakest in the Batman franchise still enthralls me; if we’re talking about Christopher Nolan’s The Dark Knight, we may be talking Godfather-level cinema.
and Neeson is fantastic in it. Wish I could share your enthusiasm for Spider-Man but I spent the entire movie wishing the dweeb would grow a pair. More like Spider-Boy to me. The series I prefer is the X-Men franchise, which seems to get more sophisticated with each release. And the Wolverine spin-off is a definite fave.
RC: Of the big name superheroes we haven’t mentioned Spider-Man yet. I liked the first Sam Raimi web slinger movie, complete with Tobey Maguire and the upside down kiss, but even cooler is Darkman. Raimi created the Darkman character out of frustration after failing to get the screen rights to The Shadow and Batman. Liam Neeson plays the swashbuckling hero in this violent and funny movie.
RC: I liked Wolverine’s R-rated cameo in X-Men: First Class. Cool, underrated movie and his unfit-for-publication-in-afamily-paper-line is very memorable. Also memorable are a few movies about a lesser tier of superheroes. Everyone knows Batman and Superman, but how about Captain Invisible, the alcoholic hero who comes out of hiding to save America from destruction? Or the strange and funny Orgazmo from the twisted minds of South Park’s Matt Stone and Trey Parker?
MB: Darkman is a dark horse entry, but yes, it’s a good one

MB: And what about the lonely comic book superheroes never immortalized on film? When, oh when, will they make that masterpiece starring The Flash??? The scene where he’d do his taxes in three seconds flat would be worth the price of admission!

It went platinum and won two Grammy Awards, including best R&B album. His debut, 1995’s Brown Sugar, was also a platinum effort. ••••• Great comic book movies, like great comic books, have to play their heroes and villains straight. The stakes have to be high and in the case of Marvel’s The Avengers, the fate of the planet literally hangs in the balance. The humour is innately there (a bunch of costumed superheroes hanging out together is already absurd) but in director Joss Whedon’s mammoth budgeted blockbuster, the humour is of the nudging, winking variety, almost as if Whedon is trying to convince the audience that he’s smarter than the material. It’s an obnoxious trait that bogs down what could have been a perfect mash up.

The thing that I was always worried about was just getting pigeon-holed by a big part like this. Forged in a harsh Hong Kong ghetto, Frank Lee came to Canada in 1960 and worked overnights at the rough and tumble Phoenix Cafe in Edmonton. He was a waiter/busboy/ bouncer and, as miscreants soon found out, a very talented martial artist. When trouble started, he ended it. Tough as nails, the five-footseven 155-pounder never lost a fight. He went on to become a martial arts grandmaster out of the Edmonton gym dubbed Frank’s Torture Chamber. And he trained champions half a world away in Thailand and Hong Kong. Along the way, his family drifted apart. So son Corey — a filmmaker — set about to reconnect. In 2011, he started training under his father, returning to the martial arts he had abandoned more than two decades before. “He is my father. But I don’t really know the man. I only know the legend,” Corey says early on in Legend of a Warrior, which had its world premiere at the Hot Docs festival this week. Cameras captured their

time together over some seven months. “I was hoping for some level of healing and some level of understanding,” Corey, now 42, said in an interview this week. He got that and more in an emotional journey that is lovingly captured in the 78-minute documentary. The National Film Board project starts as a guarded father-son reunion in the ring at Frank’s gym. But emotional walls are torn down later in the film during a trip to Hong Kong, where Frank first studied martial arts after leaving China with his family at the age of nine. Tears flow as Frank rereads a letter he sent Corey from Hong Kong in February 1983 on yet another training mission that had taken him from his family. The man who can bend rebar with his neck or break cinder blocks with his hands cries as he laments the breakup of his family — or “crystal ball” as he calls it. It is heart-rending stuff and it’s a safe bet that many more tears will be shed by those watching it. The Canadian Press

Cepero dishes on the biggest swindler in showbiz — Ellis Smash. Ambition and a taste for the finer things in life drive villainous character
to watch him grow and get a new script each week and see where this kid is going. A lot of the other characters are very defined when you go into the series, and he’s very special in that sense.
T. Michelle Murphy
He’s also painted as a villain — do you think he accurately represents a certain type of person in show business? I’ve definitely met some Ellises in my day! I think that’s why there’s such a strong reaction to the character, because no matter what business you’re in — whether you’re in theatre or anywhere — you know this person. We all know an Ellis who’s overly ambitious, and really brownnosing the boss, and kind of slips up under your radar. I think that’s why people are really responding in such a [strong] way, because we all know this person.
Metro World News in New York
“By the end of this season, the Ellis gun goes off,” Jaime Cepero tells us about his deliciously villainous character on NBC’s Smash. We interviewed him to find out more about everyone’s favourite showbiz swindler. Ellis is one of our favourite characters on Smash. And he gets some of the best storylines on the show. Do you agree? Yeah, absolutely. I think the most exciting thing about this character for me, as an actor, was that he’s really undefined as you go into the series. It sets the platform to kind of go anywhere I want, in as far as storyline. And it’s been really interesting
We know Ellis is ambitious, but why? I think as the series goes on, you kind of get more definition about why he is so ambitious. He starts working for
Tom and Julia at first, and he’s working for people of this caliber, and he’s very intrigued by this world he’s working in. He’s getting to see how these people are treated and how much money they’re making — he sees all the facts, because he’s the assistant, he sees all the numbers. I think he gets a taste of this world, he gets a taste of these lavish parties, and he wants it for himself because he’s never had it before. That’s very attractive for him. By all means necessary, he’s going to pursue those things for himself. Is producing his passion, or is he going to try to make his way onstage? He kind of makes a decision about choosing production as the way to go. I think that stems from his ambition, from watching behind the scenes, from being behind the table and watching how the actors are being treated and the drama he’s seeing on the side. I think he decides producing is the way to go to be in a position with the most power.

What is his weakness? Probably the blindness of his ambition. He’s just kind of doing whatever it takes – but he brashly makes decisions sometimes without thinking about them, which sometimes works in his favor and sometimes not. It’s his biggest asset and his biggest weakness – how much cojones he has, but also how little he thinks. Do you relate to those characteristics? Jaime and Ellis are very different people. I would say that I definitely admire his ambition. If I had as much ambition as my character does, in real life, I’d probably be in a very different spot. It’s really shocking to get the script and be like, “Oh wow, this kid is not playing games. He really wants this badly.” It’s admirable to me, because it’s rare. What do we have to look forward to? The next couple of episodes are pretty intense. There’s a lot of conflict between a lot of the characters leading up to Episode 15.
Jaime Cepero has had fun shaping the character of Ellis.

Tupac-style holograms: It was inevitable sound check
Alan Cross scene@metronews.ca
Ever since Tupac’s hologram resurrection at Coachella last month, people have been talking about the potential for this technology. “Bring Michael Jackson back and the Jacksons can restage the Victory Tour of 1984!” they say. The original line-up of The Who could do another farewell tour. What would it be like to have Kurt Cobain and Jimi Hendrix in the same band at a show? Reuters recently asked 1,100 people whom they would most like to see return from the dead. The answer was Ray Charles. Some critics find this most distressing and I understand that. But we’ve been moving down this road towards virtual performers for decades. When Queen released their Live Killers concert album in 1979, there was an outcry from purists who claimed that backing tapes were used to fill in some of the vocal parts. Fans were shocked to find that live albums from many other artists were tarted up in the studio afterwards. That’s not very “live,” is it?
Yet fans didn’t care. After paying good money to see these bands, they wanted the songs to sound as close to what they heard on the radio and their stereos. A few years later, the Human League was kicked off a Talking Heads tour because audiences became so hostile at the sight of a bunch of people dancing and singing to machines. Synth bands in general were shunned by rockers who believed that these artists were cheating by using electronics, and thus not “real” musicians. But people got over it. Synth bands not only survived but prospered. Today, fans expect pitch-perfect note-for-note renditions of their favourite songs in concert and (where applicable) all kinds of dancing, special effects and costume changes. The only way to do that is with Auto-Tune and backing tracks. Meanwhile, fans watch most of the show on big video screens rather than watching the stage. Again, what’s “live?” Gorillaz sold millions of records as a virtual group. Same with Canada’s Prozzak. Hatsune Miku is an anime cartoon who performs with a live band in front of tens of thousands of screaming fans in Japanese arenas. We live in a computer generated imagery world where technology blurs reality on TV screens, in theatres, in amusement parks and on computers. Why wouldn’t this be extended to the realm of live concerts? Besides, don’t we believe that all celebrities are fake, anyway?

“I said, ‘Well, these are my hand tools. It’s all going to build up from this,”’ says White. The resulting 13 tracks may be the best compendium yet of his particular blend of American music. There’s electric rages (Sixteen Saltines), country blues (Trash Tongue Talker), rockabilly (Rudolph
Toombs’ I’m Shakin,’ the lone cover) and folk ballads like the lilting Hip (Eponymous) Poor Boy. After funneling his songwriting through various band conceptions — the White Stripes, the Raconteurs, the Dead Weather — White is directing his latest production without artifice. Or at least, less artifice. “The funniest thing is that every album I’ve done and every band I’ve been in have been happy accidents, including this one,” says White, speaking from his home in Nashville. “If you just write songs and don’t tell them what to be — don’t tell the song to be a country song or a rock ‘n’ roll song — then it becomes what it needs to be in the end.” the Associated press

Andrew Bird breaks through with Break It Yourself album New music. Latest songs plot songwriter’s trajectory from a breakup in Chicago to a new life in New York linda laban
Metro World News
One week after Andrew Bird filmed an appearance on Jimmy Kimmel Live! in Los Angeles, the singer-songwriter and violinist is back home in New York with his segment due to air that night. Apart from Saturday Night Live, Bird has done just about all the late night TV shows. “Colbert was a high point,” he says, admitting he’s a big Stephen Colbert fan. He’s confident that SNL will happen “in due time.” And Bird is due. Break It

Yourself has just been released. “I call it my ninth album,” Bird says. “It’s the ninth album that’s had a cycle to it. There’s been a live record and soundtracks. If you count them all up, there’s probably 15 or 16.” That includes his pre-solo outfit Andrew Bird’s Bowl of Fire, which highlighted the 38-year-old’s love of prewar jazz before his singersongwriter turn. Bird’s future work, however, might take yet another musical twist. “I continue to write songs that make sense as an Andrew Bird record, but I hear things that I don’t know how to pull off yet. All I can say is what I am hearing is less poporiented and more devotional or religious. Not religious in the sense of ‘Jesus I love you,’” he emphasizes. Lady Gaga single again Lady Gaga and boyfriend Taylor Kinney have reportedly called it quits, with the culprit being the singer’s hectic schedule, according to Us Weekly. “She will be touring nonstop until next year and has found she can’t have a relationship at the same time,” a source says of Gaga, who is about to embark on a 110-stop tour. “There’s just no room for anything else. Her work is all-consuming.” Of course, to hear the source tell it, the relationship might not have lasted much longer on its own, anyway. “Taylor was all about himself, a typical actor, and didn’t completely get Gaga,” the source says.

Poor Popchips. They just wanted to get people to eat their unique snack food (a.k.a. communion wafers with salt) but their recent online ad campaign is backfiring spectacularly. The face of the campaign, Ashton Kutcher, is currently facing criticism for his roles in the commercials that many feel are racist, according to E! News. In the online video, Kutcher appears as numerous ridiculous characters, including Raj, a brownfaced Bollywood producer with a thick Indian accent. (Kutcher also appears as a character sending up Karl
Lagerfeld that could be construed as homophobic.) Overwhelmingly negative responses to the advertisement prompted Popchips to remove it from YouTube and Facebook a day after it was released. “The new Popchips worldwide dating video and ad campaign featuring four characters was created to provoke a few laughs and was never intended to stereotype or offend anyone,” a company rep said in a statement to the Hollywood Reporter. Here’s the thing someone should have told Popchips: Kutcher can’t act. At all. His version of “acting” is basically over the top parody — all the time. So when he gets tapped to portray someone of a different race, even in a comedic role, of course it will be seen as mockery/ racism. The only actor who could tackle this without getting in trouble? Sir Ben Kingsley. Popchips, get that guy on the phone ASAP.

Cut it out Cameron, it’s just some hair A recent rushed visit to a hairdresser friend left Cameron Diaz with much shorter locks than expected — and tears in her eyes. “I started crying. I felt so vulnerable. For a woman to all of a sudden have no hair — oh my God,” she tells Jay Leno during an interview. “There was a little misunderstanding. I said I just want a little bit cut off.” But a bit quickly turned into a bob, which turned traumatic for all involved. “She started crying. I started crying. A couple other people started crying. I ended up writing her a few emails over the next few days assuring her I was OK,” Diaz says.
Amber Riley strikes back Let’s hear it for Glee star Amber Riley. After a red carpet fainting spell earlier in the week, she’s on the (hilarious) defensive about her personal life — including whether or not she’s expecting. “Let me stop the rumour mill right now. I’m not pregnant. Yes, I’m black but I don’t have diabetes, I don’t starve myself to fit clothes; I buy clothes to fit me not vice versa,” Riley posted to Twitter in response to the rumours that sprouted up overnight after her episode. “I did get a great laugh this morning reading all the BS, though.”
3 LIFE History
Celebration Cinco de Mayo celebrates the victory of the Mexican Army over the French at the Battle of Puebla in 1862. Celebrations include not only wonderful Mexican foods, but also parades, mariachi music and folk dancing. Traditional Mexican cuisine varies vastly from region to region in Mexico. The earliest Mexican agricultural staples were beans, squash and chili peppers, with corn arriving some 2,000 years later. Staples expanded to include avocados, coconuts, tomatoes, sweet potatoes, peanuts, chia seeds, and more varieties of beans. Early traditional dishes included atole (porridge), tortilla, tamales (filled pastries, both savory and sweet) and soups. The cuisine has expanded to include a wide variety of dishes way beyond burritos, tacos and salsa. METRO

Cool caliente bites with fresh Corona LIQUID ASSETS
Peter Rockwell @therealwineguy peterrockwell@eastlink.cca
I’ve had a long standing respect for tequila, but the distilled output of agave plants is by no means the only booze stamped “Made in Mexico”. With Cinco de Mayo celebrations a day away and Salma Hayek shilling for Burger King, south of the border (the American one at least) things are heating up. Sadly, the country’s superstar brand — Corona Extra (6x330 ml, $12.95 - $14.09) — gets a bum rap from beer aficionados thanks to its lean-bodied flavour and clear glass bottle (which fanatics swear allows natural light to affect its flavour). Whatever you believe, Corona is a great beer to have with any food that’s eclectic — especially if it’s spicy. Of course, the last thing I would do is allow a bartender to jam a wedge of lime into any Corona bottle I’ve ordered. They may seem to go together like Brad and Angelina but the union of lime and liquid really began as a way to keep flies out of an opened bottle. It turns out that the acidity in the citrus makes them bug off.

Carne Asada with Confetti Salsa. The combination of fruity salsa & marinated meat makes this the perfect Mexican meal The more time the sirloin tips bathe in this recipe’s punchy marinade of lime juice, Worcestershire sauce and garlic, the better. So while it calls for marinating the meat for about two hours, don’t hesitate to toss them in as you head out to work in the morning. You’ll be rewarded when you get home and crank up the grill. To save time, you could sub-
stitute a mango or other fruity jarred salsa for the one made as part of this recipe. If you have time, this salsa is a chunky hodge-podge of bell pepper, tomatillos, avocado, mango, tomato and red onion, with a bit of heat from a chipotle chili in adobo.
1. In a large zip-close bag, combine the sirloin tips, lime juice, salt, Worcestershire sauce, olive oil, black pepper and garlic cloves. Shake to coat the meat. Refrigerate for two hours.
2. Meanwhile, in a large bowl
combine the bell pepper, tomatillos, avocado, mango, tomato, red onion, chipotle, adobo sauce, garlic, lime juice and cilantro. Stir well, then season

Complement haddock with an odd little fruit Visually, kumquats resemble diminutive oranges. But they technically aren’t citrus. And unlike oranges, it is the thin skin that is sweet, while the flesh is sour. You probably won’t find bushels of them at the grocer, but most stores will have a few pints tucked away among the “strange produce offerings. And they are worth looking for. Here’s why: in a tiny, bright orange package, kumquats pack an intense sweet-tart flavour that complements sweet and savoury dishes. Kumquats, which originated in China, are eaten whole — as in, skin and all. The seeds can be chomped, too. But that’s a matter of taste. Kumquats should be firm, but tender. They can be stored
at room temperature for several days or refrigerated for two to three weeks. Here they’re used to make Kumquat and Red Onion Salsa on Baked Haddock.

MLB. Jury sees evidence U.S. government says links Clemens to steroids Exhibit 52C was the semicrushed Miller Lite beer can. Exhibit 52D was the FedEx box that once contained the beer can. Then came exhibits of gauze, tissues, syringes, cotton balls and needles, some of which were once inside the beer can, using up letters of the alphabet all the way to X. For the first time Thursday, the jury in the Roger Clemens trial saw in person the physical evidence the government says will link the 11-time all-star to steroids, evidence Clemens’ lawyer has called a “mixed-up hodgepodge of garbage.” The items were presented on Day 10 of the retrial on charges that Clemens committed perjury when he told Congress in 2008 that he had never taken

Frustrated and foul-prone for three quarters, LeBron James finally did what he usually does at Madison Square Garden. And the New York Knicks got the only result they know anymore in the playoffs. James scored 32 points, including eight straight to start the fourth quarter and break open the game, and the Miami Heat took a 3-0 series lead, sending the Knicks to an NBA post-season-record 13th straight loss, 87-70 on Thursday night. secutive three-pointers in the fourth quarter, when the Heat finally brought some beauty to what had been an ugly game. Carmelo Anthony scored 22 points but shot seven of 23 for the Knicks, who are playing without Amare Stoudemire, Jeremy Lin and Iman Shumpert and needed a super effort from Anthony that he didn’t come close to providing. In a sloppy game between
two star-studded teams, Miami went 10 minutes without a field goal in the second half and the Knicks managed just three baskets in the third quarter. Then James, who finished with eight turnovers, took over. He came off the bench to start the fourth after sitting most of the third in foul trouble, quickly providing the best offensive stretch in the game. He nailed a three-pointer, followed his own miss, then hit again from behind the arc, turning the Heat’s two-point lead into a 66-56 cushion with 10:36 remaining. the associated press

Alexei Ponikarovsky scored on his own rebound with 2:39 left in overtime and the New Jersey Devils defeated the Philadelphia Flyers 4-3 Thursday night to take a 2-1 lead in this Eastern Conference semifinal series. Patrik Elias, Ilya Kovalchuk and Zach Parise also scored for the Devils, who killed off two penalties in overtime before Ponikarovsky came through with his first goal of the postseason on a backhander that
sneaked past Ilya Bryzgalov. Martin Brodeur made 25 saves for New Jersey, which will look to take a 3-1 lead in the best-of-seven series Sunday. Kovalchuk, who missed Game 2 with a lower-body injury, also had two assists in his return, including one on the game winner. Danny Briere, Matt Carle and Brayden Schenn tallied for the Flyers. Bryzgalov had 27 saves. Schenn nearly won the game eight minutes into overtime with a deflection in front and then the Devils’ penalty kill did an outstanding job after a boarding call with 11:37 left in overtime and a delay-of-game penalty. the associated press

Horoscope
Aries | March 21 - April 20.
It may seem as if someone you live or work with is keeping things from you but according to the planets that isn’t the case at all. Taurus | April 21 - May 21. Put your own needs on hold and help someone with an emotional problem that they are finding difficult.
Win!
Leo | July 23 - Aug. 22. Be who you are, not who other people say you should be. You are under no obligation to change your ways to suit family and friends. Virgo | Aug. 23 - Sept. 22.
With Venus in your sign linked to your ruling planet Mercury, your powers of persuasion are awesome.
Something you say today may not go down well with friends. That’s OK because the truth needs to be told. Libra | Sept. 23 - Oct. 22. The approaching full moon will compel you to make changes. They may be painful but they are necessary too.
Don’t let anyone tell you that you are aiming too high or expecting too much of yourself. If anything, you should be expecting a lot more.
The planets indicate that a time of new beginnings is here at last but to make the most of it you need to sweep away all traces of the past.
Gemini | May 22 - June 20. Cancer | June 21 - July 22.
Yesterday’s Sudoku
Scorpio | Oct. 23 - Nov. 21.
Sagittarius | Nov. 22 - Dec. 21. You need to face up to your
problems. Most likely they are not real problems at all, just doubts.
Capricorn | Dec. 22 - Jan 20. You may be the most practical
member of the zodiac but you have your dreams like everyone else and one dream is now within reach.
You write it!
Aquarius | Jan. 21 - Feb 18.
People in positions of power are watching you closely, so put on a show over the next couple of days.
Pisces | Feb. 19 - March 20.
Get creative and think of ways you might be able to make your life more exciting — and more profitable too. Sally brompton
