The 45th Infantry By Chris Cockrum Special Collections & Research Department
As World War I erupted in Europe, the United States government began organizing members of state militias into more formalized National Guard units. These groups were then deployed overseas where they would provide support for troops on the front lines. On March 31, 1917, members of the 1st Oklahoma Infantry Regiment were mobilized for service abroad. Consolidated with the 7th Texas Infantry to form the 142nd Regiment of the 36th Infantry Division, the unit would earn combat experience in one of the most crucial episodes of the war, the Meuse-Argonne Campaign in France. Taking place from September 26 to November 11, 1918, the Meuse-Argonne Offensive was a major part of the final Allied push to win the war. With over a million U.S. soldiers participating in the fight, it was one 4
of the largest operations of the American Expeditionary Forces. As a part of the Hundred Days Offensive, it was a decisive victory that would help lead to the signing of the Armistice of November 11, 1918. Yet, all great victories must come at a remarkable cost. With over 26,000 American soldiers killed in action and an excess of 120,000 total casualties, it was one of the deadliest campaigns in U.S. military history. Members of the 142nd were not excluded from the losses. One day after the Meuse-Argonne Offensive came to an end, this photo was captured. In it is the depiction of a greatly depleted Army band dutifully playing its instruments in both a celebration of victory as well as a commemoration of those who were lost. Around them, an exhausted group of soldiers, including members of the 1st Oklahoma

Infantry, had gathered. An inscription on the photo reads: …Only 41 left out of 250 of our Company. The next day after the Argonne. The band has 16 left out of 55. They are trying to play their best tune since that night. Notice the French children with their wooden shoes. 15 acres of cemetery left behind. Indeed, the battle was hard-won. In, 1919, the men of the 142nd returned to the States and, not long after, the unit was demobilized. One year later, in the aftermath of the war, the National Defense Act of 1920 was put in place. This legislation would pave the way for the formation of Oklahoma’s own contingent, supported by the U.S. Army. In 1923, with its roots firmly affixed in the defense of the nation, the 45th Infantry Division was officially organized. u
Introducing NEW Experience Passes! We’ve added two new Experience Passes to our collection. In addition to the Oklahoma City Museum of Art, library customers can now borrow passes to the Oklahoma History Center and Museum of Osteology starting in November.
How do they work? Each of our 19 Metro libraries has one Experience Pass per venue. Visit your local library to check out the pass, which will admit you to the venue of choice for free. Each pass has its own set of guidelines for number of visitors admitted and whether special exhibits are included. Find those at metrolibrary.org. The Magical Yet by Angela DiTerlizzi; Illustrations by Leonora Alvarez
EASY DIT
Available formats: book “The Magical Yet” is an empowering picture book that reminds you to never give up, never stop dreaming, and always give it your best. This book reminds you that failing is OK — just don’t stop trying. The Magical Yet is a cute pink animal that always is by your side encouraging you to push on. It reminds you of everything that you have accomplished in the past. I love the colorful illustrations in this book. This book will introduce your reader to possibilities and encourage them to understand that mistakes are just a part of life and they will help you learn and grow. I highly recommend sharing this book with others. reviewed by: Michelle Stone is an access specialist for the Community Libraries, mother to two sons, pet owner to three chihuahuas (Little Bear, Zoey and Bella), and grandma to Ahsoka the cat. A Wolf Called Wander by Rosanne Parry
J Fiction/PAR
Available formats: book, e-book (Libby), e-audiobook (Libby) “A Wolf Called Wander” is told through the perspective of a wolf and inspired by the travels of a real wolf in the wild. This book is perfect for nature and animal lovers, with a feeling of being completely surrounded by nature as soon as we start the book. There are plenty of times we get to join Wander as he runs, fights, hunts and howls, and we join him through struggles and strife as well. Parry’s novel puts an emphasis on family, perseverance and nature's interconnectedness, while her writing overtakes your senses with every detail Wander drinks in. I, a 20-something, greatly enjoyed the book, and the emotional ups and downs I got to feel with Wander. He goes through his journey with so much emotion but there is also the refreshing perspective of an animal that takes what comes and understands he must keep going, keep living, because that’s what he’s there to do. Please be aware: This book includes depictions of animal violence, suffering and death. reviewed by: Hayley Pryor works as a library aid at Edmond Library and is currently studying creative writing at the University of Central Oklahoma. She loves reading about nature, and all sorts of different adventures, and can usually be found telling her donkey about her latest read.
The Memory Collectors by Kim Neville
Fiction/NEV
Available formats: book, e-book (Libby), e-audiobook (Libby) One sees stain. Another sees shine. In “The Memory Collectors” by Kim Neville, objects hold special properties only a few people can sense. Evelyn is one such person. She can sense pain on a string of pearls, longing in a child’s toy top. Evelyn cannot stop the impressions she gets from things, so she wears cotton gloves to protect herself from the stains that cling. Harriet’s ability gives her a sense of shine. The stuffed velvet monkey from the thrift store has shine. He can live in her pocket. His name will be Frederique. Harriet senses shine on many, many things and now her apartment is chockful to the ceiling, boxes spilling out into the hallway. She will have to move soon. The Memory Collectors poses the questions: Can inanimate objects really affect people? Can associated feelings with objects make others sick? Neville weaves her characters into an intense page-turner of loss and redemption. For folks who buy second-hand, this is a story you won’t soon forget. reviewed by: A born and raised Oklahomie, Kelley Riha is an actor, playwright and improv artist. She treasures her family, Chickasaw heritage and golf (the Zen kind).
The Switch by Beth O’Leary
Fiction/Ole
Available formats: book, e-Book (Libby), e-audiobook (Libby), Playaway Audioplayer Switching lives with someone may seem like an appealing escape, but would you feel the same if you were switching lives with your grandma? Leena Cotton messed up big time at work. Ordered to take a two-month sabbatical, she offers to switch places with her grandma who always wanted to live in the city. Leena thinks she is in for a relaxing time just taking care of her grandma’s garden and doing some light committee work for the neighborhood watch. Suddenly there is a festival to plan, a dog that escapes and a neighbor who just can’t mind his own business. Eileen is 80, single and living in London for the first time. While she’s discovering the world of online dating, she’s also trying to learn all she can about Leena’s life. This novel takes a deeper look at the way we grieve and recover from losses of all kinds and follows two different characters on their journey to figure out what they want from life. reviewed by: Tess Botkin is a librarian at Northwest Library. Students, Get the Most Out of Your Library Card! By Emily Williams, Department of Outreach and Engagement Services
You know that a library card lets you check out books. You might even know about all the other great materials the library has to offer — DVDs, music CDs, magazines, graphic novels and more. But did you know about the databases? The online test prep guides? Live tutors for homework help? The streaming movies and music? All free with your library card? Read on! Online Resource Databases It’s a boring word that hides some of our most exciting resources. Yes, databases are excellent for writing research papers and finding peer-reviewed articles. But we also have databases that can help you study for your driver’s test, learn how to draw, create a resume, read screenplays, take an ACT practice test, learn to code and practice your foreign language learning skills. Homework Help Our biggest homework help resource is Brainfuse’s HelpNow service. Are you ready for free study tools, practice tests and more? HelpNow includes live tutoring with vetted tutors. When a user enters an online live tutoring session, they’re taken to the virtual whiteboard where they can draw out problems and concepts, type messages back and forth with their tutor and upload documents to share. After a session is complete, it’s saved
8
to the user’s account so they can access the information for future study. HelpNow live tutoring sessions are available from 2-11pm every day. Want to meet your friends online to study together? HelpNow offers virtual study sessions! By using the “Meet” option, users can schedule time with their friends and use the whiteboard to exchange messages, share documents and more. ONEcard & OKCPS Students in Oklahoma City Public Schools have a unique way to access library resources. ONEcard is a partnership between the Metropolitan Library System and OKCPS. Students enrolled in a ONEcard account can use their student ID numbers to access Metro Library resources! OKCPS students are automatically enrolled in ONEcard when they register to attend school, unless their parent or guardian opts them out. ONEcard account holders can check out up to 10 books or audiobooks at a time, use all online resources (including e-books, e-audiobooks and databases), and use library computers. Don’t go to OKCPS? Any child under the age of 17 who is eligible to attend school in Oklahoma County may apply for either a primary or school account. At this time we
aren’t able to expand ONEcard to include other school districts. Book a Librarian and Tailored Skills Have questions? We have answers. While we can’t do your homework or fix all your problems for you, we can help you get started on research projects, find your first job, take the GED and more. Why I Ditched Standard Resolutions this Year By Victoria Stephens
New Year’s resolutions can be tricky. It’s a balance between keeping them simple enough to not “fall off the wagon” after a week yet meaningful enough to appreciate and value the result. I know the feeling of disappointment after a failed New Year’s resolution. After many failed attempts at various resolutions, I learned that in order to keep my resolutions, I need to keep them simple and realistic. According to a 2019 report in Psychology Today, only 19% of people keep their resolutions. The article also notes that, change can’t simply be based on a calendar day. Change is best pursued when the individual is ready. For me, focusing on simplicity is key. By sticking to simplicity, I can spare my sanity and those self-deprecating emotions that develop if I break them. Resolutions don’t have to be earth shattering or life changing. Dr. Jennifer Ashton, chief medical correspondent for “ABC News” and “Good Morning America,” shared in her 2019 book, “The Self Care Solution,” how her patients would make sweeping changes to their diet and exercise, experience great success and then lose their progress after they were unable to sustain drastic changes to their lifestyle. She proposed an experiment. She started recording her own experience with setting 30day challenges for herself. She found that 30 days was the perfect amount of time to try a new routine. From no alcohol for one month to more cardio and on to simply laughing more, she was able to make sweeping changes to her lifestyle one small step at a time. For 2022, I decided to tackle my “resolutions” one month at a time, much like Ashton. My January challenge is to read for at least 20 minutes every day. I picked this short time frame because it’s manageable even on the busiest days. If you’re looking for a resolution that can improve your overall heath, I would recommend reading for just 20 minutes before bed. By signing up for the library’s Winter Reading Challenge you can also earn prizes in the process. Who doesn’t love those retro campfire mugs? Here are some books to get you started: 14
