The Midas Man
We often take for granted the everyday things we use to accomplish mundane tasks like buying groceries. Have you ever been in the grocery store, pushing a cart like you’ve probably done a thousand times, and wondered who came up with the idea to design the shopping cart? It might surprise you to learn the shopping cart was first created here in Oklahoma. Born in Ardmore, Sylvan “Syl” Goldman (1898-1984) was the son
by Sheldon Beach, Special Collections and Research
of immigrants. His father, Michael, came to the US from Latvia in 1880 and made the land run in 1889. His mother, Hortense, came to the US later from Alsace-Lorraine, then a part of the German Empire. The two married in 1894 and had two sons, one of whom was Sylvan Goldman. One of only a handful of Jewish children in the city of Ardmore, young Syl went to Ardmore public schools for eight years. The Goldman family moved to Tulsa in 1913, where Syl began working in the family grocery business. In 1917, with war raging in Europe, Syl Goldman lied about his age and enlisted to serve in WWI. Due to his experience in the grocery business, he served as a mess sergeant during the war. Upon his return from the war, he formed a partnership with brother Alfred in the wholesale produce business in Texas. They later worked in California to learn more about the grocery business and eventually returned to Tulsa where they opened Sun Grocery. The stores were a success, and a buyer came calling after the Goldman brothers in the late 1920s. Shortly after selling Sun Grocery to Safeway, Syl lost most of his fortune in the stock market crash of 1929. It was then that he and Alfred decided to open a new grocery chain. Since a clause in their contract with Safeway prevented them from competing in Tulsa, the brothers decided to set up shop in Oklahoma City, where they would go on to run many successful grocery operations. Despite his success in the grocery business, Syl Goldman is primarily known for one thing: inventing the shopping cart. Inspired by folding chairs in 1936 Goldman, along with maintenance man and carpenter Fred Young, designed the first shopping cart. In June 1937 he began advertising the invention, marketing to shoppers weary of carrying baskets. The new invention was initially met with reluctance by shoppers, however. People believed they were perfectly capable of carrying around their own baskets, so why would they need the help of a basket on wheels? Always the imaginative innovator, Goldman hired actors to push the carts around in his stores, demonstrating to other customers their convenience and ease. The trend caught on and the cart revolutionized self-service shopping around the world. The shopping cart was Goldman’s most famous invention, but not his only one. Other Goldman grocery-related inventions included the grocery sacker and milk bottle racks. Baggage carts were one of his non-grocery inventions. Sylvan Goldman was also known for his philanthropic work. He was inducted into the Oklahoma Hall of Fame in 1971. He died on November 25, 1984, at the age of 86, and is buried at Fairlawn Cemetery. Syl Goldman Park at 5353 South Independence Avenue in southwest Oklahoma City was named for him. u Images courtesy of the Oklahoma Historical Society.

Arsenic and Adobo by Mia P. Manansala
MYSTERY MAN
Caul Baby by Morgan Jerkins
FICTION JER
Available formats: Book, eBook, eAudiobook
Available formats: Book, eAudiobook, eBook, Large Print
This cozy mystery manages to make readers feel hungry, shocked, and comforted at the same time. Part of a new era of cozy mysteries increasing diversity in the genre, Arsenic and Adobo is a promising start to this series. Lila has moved back to her hometown after leaving her cheating ex. Working at her family’s Filipino restaurant, she runs into her high school sweetheart. She soon finds out he has changed, and not only is he attacking her family’s restaurant with scathing reviews but doing the same to every local restaurant in town. Before Lila can figure out why, he dies while eating lunch at her family restaurant and she is the primary suspect. To clear her name, she will have to confront memories she would rather leave behind and finds unlikely friends in the process. All the characters in this book are interesting and interconnected in the way only small towns can be. This is a good pick for traditional cozy mystery readers, but also those who have never tried the genre and want a quick read.
After several consecutive miscarriages, Laila seeks help from the most powerful family in Harlem – the Melancons. The Melancon women are born with a special skin tissue called a caul that, when imparted to another, heals them of their physical and emotional woes. The tissue is costly and sold exclusively to affluent White families, a practice that divides and frustrates the residents of their predominantly Black neighborhood. As a Black woman, Laila is unable to purchase a caul and never recovers from the experience. Unbeknownst to her, her niece, Amara, experiences a surprise pregnancy with a "caul baby," or caulbearer. Amara hands her child to the Melancons who begin to sell her caul for profit. Now a grown woman and successful district attorney, Amara is set on ending the practice of selling cauls and taking down the family who has caused turmoil in her community for decades. "Caul Baby" is a memorable read and spans multiple genres: magical realism, family drama, and contemporary fiction. Morgan Jerkins brings the characters to life by exploring their connection to race, socioeconomic status, gender, and political footing. While diving into the complex themes of bodily autonomy and gentrification, this book is a quick read sure to stay with you long after you read the last page.

Dark Shadows and Beyond: the Jonathan Frid Story
791.45092 F898d VIDEO DISC
Available formats: DVD Jonathan Frid rose to fame playing Barnabas Collins in the famed and unique gothic soap opera Dark Shadows, which aired on TV from 1966 to 1971, spawned two movies, and aired in syndication until 1990. There have been newer versions, but none as popular as the original. Although a familiar trope today, Barnabas was one of the first romantic and tortured vampires. While his popular character led the way in making Dark Shadows a cult classic, the Canadian born actor was also a classically trained theater actor who appeared on Broadway. In addition to stories by family, friends, and fellow actors, including Marian Ross, who toured with him in Arsenic and Old Lace, David Selby, and Anthony Zerbe, there are interviews with and performances of the talented actor. One particularly enjoyable section features Frid reading The Legend of Sleepy Hollow, which he did in his one-man shows. Throughout the DVD, Jonathan Frid comes across as not only talented, but as an interesting and nice person. reviewed by: Ann Meeks is a librarian at Ralph Ellison Library and has been with Metro Library for over 20 years. She's a third-generation librarian, as her grandmother and father were librarians. Her other grandmother and mother were both English teachers.
The Midnight Library by Matt Haig
FICTION HAI
Available formats: Book, Book on CD, eBook, eAudiobook, Large Print Nora Seed has had enough of living. Every disappointment pushes her closer to the edge and so, she ends it all. But, to her surprise, it is not the end.” Nora wakes in The Midnight Library. She is guided by her kindly former school librarian, Mrs. Elm, who explains that book in the library holds Nora’s alternative lives – the lives Nora might have led had she made different life choices along the way. Sorting regrets from dreams, Nora strives to find an authentic life before her time runs out. Will she settle on being an heiress or addict, a parent or rock star? Haig’s narrator reassures readers: “We only need to be one person. We only need to feel one existence. We don’t have to do everything in order to be everything because we are already infinite. While we are alive, we always contain a future of multifarious possibility.” reviewed by: A born and raised Oklahomie, Kelley Riha is an actor, playwright and improv artist. 12 Ways to Get Caught Reading by Buddy Johnson It is Get Caught Reading Month - promoting the fun of reading for readers of all ages. We compiled our top 12 ways to get caught reading. We hope that this May you get caught too.
#1
Reading while exercising is a no-brainer! Health professionals recommend at least 30 minutes of exercise a day so you're killing two birds with one stone (or choose your own less-violent proverb). Mind and body. Perfect harmony. It's simple with downloadables from your library -- just trade out the gym TVs for a Hoopla magazine, or switch from music to a Libby eAudiobook while jogging.
#2
Undoubtedly the most rewarding way to get caught reading is to read to children. Reading stories opens new worlds of imagination for youngsters and improves their academic success, strengthens their attention span, and aids in language and speech development. It makes you feel pretty good about yourself, too. Even cavemen knew this, and they didn't have books.
#3
No children? It's perfectly fine to get caught reading to your pets. Sure, some of the academic benefits are lost on them, but you still receive the benefits of reading, and you may strengthen the bond you have with your pets. On the other hand, they might look at you like you're a stupid human.
#4
How about reading while watching a movie? Yes, you can! Watching a foreign movie on DVD from the library is a multilayered activity - you are essentially reading for a couple of hours but you're also enjoying the movie and broadening your cultural horizons!
#7
Put away your phone or computer and keep a book at your bedside. Read a bit before shoving off to the Land of Nod. Reading print books is a stress-reducer and affects your brain in ways that improve the quality of your sleep and, according to sleep scientists, can lead to some fantastic dreams.
#8
There's always the classic - reading in the bathtub. Both reading and bathing reduce stress so why not go for the double whammy or the full monty? Both old-school print books and new-fangled eBooks will work. But be careful - water damage knows no favorites!
#9
Sporting events are great places to get caught reading. Baseball games from Little League all the way up to Dodger Stadium can provide the perfect pace. If you just read between innings, you'll bag 34 minutes - throw in a rain delay and you can get in that new novel you've been putting off.
#10
Most of us hate sitting in waiting rooms. Even though waiting rooms are full of reading material, why risk a handsanitizer moment when it is so easy to stash a book in your bag for your reading pleasure? And, of course, the library's digital downloads make it easy to grab a magazine or mystery novel on your eReader or mobile device - you may find yourself looking forward to getting caught reading at your next dental appointment.
#11
Read a book at the bar and improve the intellectual quality of your next date. A paperback from the library's classics collection works every time!
Reading can be a wonderful way to explore Oklahoma City. Grab some reading material from the library and try different venues for reading. Get caught reading in one of Oklahoma City’s 170 public parks like Top O' Town, the Myriad Gardens, or at the Boathouse District. How about one of the benches on Skydance Bridge suspended over I-40? You'll be surprised how different it is to experience these places while reading.
#6
#12
#5
People have been reading on the move since the Egyptians read papyruses in their chariots. Today's planes, trains, and automobiles are optimal reading venues. An engaging story is a sure cure for most forms of transport-related boredom, and with so many options available from your library, getting there is a snap … as long as you're a passenger. We don't advocate reading and piloting vehicles at the same time.
Read in the same environment or setting as the story. Get caught reading reading Stephen King in a graveyard. It makes it all the more scary. Transport yourself back to the world of Oklahoma City’s favorite son Ralph Ellison by reading Invisible Man in Deep Deuce. Or make the clock stop by reading Walden at Martin Nature Park.
#13 Bonus
Whatever way you want to get caught reading! 8
