Cafeteria Craze By Sheldon Beach, librarian, Special Collections and Research

Does anyone out there remember days long, long before the pandemic when you could stand over a sneeze guard and pick out the food you wanted for lunch from a plethora of already made tasty delights just lined up for you? I don’t mean back in 2019, but way, way back in the days when Friday nights with the family, or after church meals often meant everybody gathering for Salisbury steak and mashed potatoes, or fried chicken and green beans, or any other assortment of food you wanted because someone else had already taken the time to have it ready and waiting for you to pick out when you walked in the building? I’m talking, of course, about the good old cafeteria. Of course, any Oklahoma City foodie worth their salt and pepper probably already knows that before it was home to a number of innovative food trucks, vegan restaurants, and fancy brunches, Oklahoma City was once known as one of America’s cafeteria capitals. One of those cafeterias, of course, was Dodson’s Cafeteria in Capitol Hill. A family affair, Dodson’s, owned by Joe and Charlotte Dodson, with the help of Joe’s family and a few employees, would serve anywhere from 800 to 1,000 people every day, and as many as 1,500 on the weekends. Lunch on weekdays was $0.65, and on weekends went up to $1.50. Everything was made from scratch, chicken was fried Southern style in an iron skillet, and they even made their own pie crusts. A restaurant of firsts, Dodson’s opened on April 19, 1952. Not only was Dodson's one of the first cafeterias on the south side of Oklahoma City, but it was also the first restaurant in the Capitol Hill area to offer its customers air conditioning. A few years after the original Dodson’s opened, the family expanded to a second location in the first mall in south Oklahoma City, Redding Shopping Center, in 1956. Dodson’s fed people from all over, as well as loyal locals who would come every day for years. When something happened on the south side, it was often planned in Dodson’s Cafeteria. And on some days, customers were entertained with live organ music played by Joe himself. Dodson’s remained a staple of south Oklahoma City for many years. Their location at 2150 SW 59th Street closed in December of 2000 after serving the people of the south side of Oklahoma City for 48 years. Dodson’s wasn’t the only cafeteria in the city. You might even remember some others like Boulevard Cafeteria. This city institution closed just a few short years ago in 2015 after a run of 67 years. To hear more about Dodson’s Cafeteria, visit the QR link to listen to our interview with Charlotte Dodson. u

Another Kind Written by Mia P. Manansala Illustrated by Cait May

JFICTION ANO

Available formats: Book, eBook Another Kind is a graphic novel about love and found family. Six kids go through trial after trial in the world, but they have each other. That’s what this beautiful book is, a found-family story with fantasy and magic. The humor is wonderful, the characters are extremely fleshed out, and every scene is filled with emotions that just build and build. I laughed and I cried, and I immediately wanted to flip back to the beginning to spend more time with these six beautiful kids. The plot makes this a page-turner, but the character design and the dialogue are where this book shines for me. That is not to say the plot does not also shine. There’s cross-country adventure, trickery, betrayal, and an ending that makes every page come together beautifully. I recommend this to any young person looking for something fun and interesting to read, and to anyone looking for a story that will make them appreciate the differences between us all. reviewed by: Hayley Pryor works as a library aide at Edmond Library and is currently studying creative writing at the University of Central Oklahoma. Magic, Lies, and Deadly Pies Written by Misha Popp

MYSTERY POP

Available formats: : Book, eBook, eAudiobook Daisy Ellery bakes magic into her pies. For her regular business, she bakes happiness, stress-relief, love, and good vibes into her pies. For her secret side project, she bakes pies for abused women to give to their partners. Someone begins blackmailing Daisy, threatening to reveal her secret if she doesn’t bake murder pies for a list of women she doesn’t know. As she prepares for a statewide pie baking contest, she tries to investigate to find the identity of her blackmailer. This is not your typical cozy mystery. The topics dealt with are heavy, but the characters’ dialog and senses of humor keep it light. The magic system is a unique, everyday magic that is subtle and realistic and tied to traditionally “feminine” arts and crafts. Although her baking can result in death, Daisy is still guided by a strong moral compass. There is a side romance so full of heart and adds depth to Daisy’s character. For fans of Pushing Daisies, Practical Magic, and Buffy the Vampire Slayer or anyone wanting a twist on the traditional cozy mystery genre. reviewed by: Kristine Magers is a collection development librarian who purchases adult fiction for Metro Library. When she’s not reading, she’s crossstitching or watching too much reality TV.

The Love Hypothesis by Ali Hazelwood

FICTION HAZ

Available formats: Book, eBook, eAudiobook, Large Print Ph.D. candidate Olive Smith doesn't think love is real. At least, not the kind of love that results in long-term, happy relationships. As a scientist, she needs proof, and she hasn't seen a true "happily ever after" yet. Olive's best friend Anh is relentless in trying to set up her friend up in hopes of making her happy, so Olive panics and accidentally kisses the biggest jerk she knows: Professor Adam Carlsen. So begins a fake-dating situation full of tension, drama, and a science conference gone epically wrong. This romance is cute and fast-paced, with standard romance tropes (but there's only one bed!) that manages to be fun and believable. Science and STEMthemed romance are author Ali Hazelwood's specialty, so if you enjoy this one, look for her next book – Love on the Brain – to be published in August. reviewed by: Emily Williams is the teen services manager for Metro Library. The World Needs More Purple People Written by Kristen Bell and Benjamin Hart Illustrated by Daniel Wiseman

EASY BEL

Available formats: Book, eBook This delightful picture book encourages readers to become a purple person! “What is a purple person,” is the question you might be asking yourself? In order to find out, you will need to read the book. It encourages readers to ask questions, be kind, be silly, be empathetic, have a good work ethic, and to be themselves. I loved this book. I loved the illustrations. This book introduces complex questions and ideas such as diversity and self-awareness in a way that is easily understandable for anyone. I highly recommend sharing this book with others. reviewed by: Michelle Stone is a collection development technician, mother to two sons, pet owner to three chihuahuas (Little Bear, Zoey and Bella), and grandma to Ahsoka the cat. Benefits of Reading by Emily Williams, Teen Services Manager, Outreach and Engagement Services

Reading is good for you. But why? Let’s dive into all the reasons why reading is important and contributes to a healthy lifestyle. Most of us recognize that reading helps us learn and grow, but have you thought about other potential benefits like improved physical health and stress relief? As a library employee, one of my favorite “reading is good for you” facts to share is that reading fiction improves empathy. If you’re want to broaden your horizons, understand your community, and teach your children to be thoughtful and caring, then read fiction! It puts us in another person’s position, and helps us learn about cultures and traditions, viewpoints, and thoughts and feelings that may be different than our own. Practiced readers often identify with protagonists, giving us an expanded capacity for taking others into consideration when making decisions in the real world. Reading can be a window, sliding door, or mirror. It can provide a window for us to look through and see another way of life up close. As a sliding door, we can step through and share an experience. Often, it’s a mirror to reflect recognizable parts of our own lives back to us, connecting us with each other and providing validation. Reading is both a comfort and an eye-opener. We can expand vocabulary and reading comprehension with books! Seeing new or unfamiliar words in context is a great way to gradually add to our vocabulary. A bonus feature of most e-readers is you can touch the word and get a definition on the spot. As far as reading comprehension goes, it just takes practice! Especially for those learning to read, in general, the more you read the easier it gets. And reading comprehension can help you in all subjects — math, science, history, and more. Students who read for fun have higher test scores. Reading is a great way to keep your mind sharp. A growth mindset means you are open to lifelong learning and changing your mind when presented with new information. Just the willingness to continue to grow and take in new information may help prevent cognitive decline. Reading keeps us engaged and gives us ways to connect and things to talk about. The last two years were devastating to our collective mental health. Studies show reading can help alleviate stress by providing quiet time or an escape. Reading can help us process our experiences, receive reinforcement for our feelings, or provide a distraction from everyday stressors. Reading can be a recreational activity you do by yourself, a 8

way to bring you closer to your family, or something social you discuss in a shared situation like a library book club. In addition to the intellectual and mental benefits, reading may have positive effects on your physical health. Reading before bed is a great alternative to doom scrolling on your phone. It can lower your blood pressure and heart rate – unless you’re reading a particularly intense thriller (or romance)! Listening to audiobooks can keep your mind busy while you are walking, running, hiking, or doing household activities like laundry, cooking, yardwork, or cleaning. It can make such time more enjoyable or go by more quickly, to keep you moving and active longer. It’s important to note that all kinds of reading counts! Comic books and graphic novels are “real” books. Audiobooks provide just as much vocabulary and reading comprehension as the paper versions. E-books are a convenient way to carry about dozens of books at once, plus the library’s downloadable collection is just a wi-fi signal away. Reading benefits are cumulative, so keep at it! Research also shows us that modeling reading behavior to others in our lives and physically (or digitally) having books in our homes supports reading skills and the health benefits that follow. Our annual Summer Reading program is a great way to challenge yourself to read all summer long. The program is free and for all ages, and you can earn prizes just for reading this summer! As little as 20 minutes a day can make a huge difference. Sign up with your family and friends today and motivate yourself to read during your lunch break, before bedtime, on vacation, together with your family, or on your own. Read whatever you want, in whatever format you want. Our library doors are open to help provide options and resources. Sign up at www.metrolibrary.org/ summerreading and help us build a healthy reading community here in central Oklahoma. The Summer Slide by Emily Williams, Teen Services Manager and Kristin Williamson, Children’s Services Manager, Outreach and Engagement Services

The Summer Slide isn’t a new feature at the local park or splash pad. No, the Summer Slide is what happens between school years when young people do not read or otherwise work to retain what they learned in school.

Whether you visit relatives, enjoy a week at camp, or have a staycation at home, make summer even more fun by reading a little everyday!

On average, children who do not read during the summer lose approximately two months of their reading achievement. They typically score lower on standardized tests at the end of the summer than they did on the same test at the beginning of the summer. And these few months of reading loss accumulate over the years. By the time students reach middle school, those who haven’t read during the summers may have lost as much as two years' worth of achievement!

• Read every day. Read non-fiction, fiction, eBooks, poetry, or newspapers or read out loud for at least 20 minutes a day!

The good news is the Summer Slide is easily prevented. HOW DO I PREVENT THE SUMMER SLIDE? Reading for just 20 minutes a day helps kids maintain the reading skills they developed during the school year. Not only will it help them stay on track when school starts back, but with reading they can experience a summer of adventure by stimulating their imaginations. Signing up for the Summer Reading Program is the best way for your child to keep reading over the summer. Summer Reading starts June 1 and continues through July 31. WAYS TO BEAT THE SUMMER SLIDE Have your children pick out their own books and take the books with them everywhere they go: road trips, the doctor’s office, grandma’s house. Listen to audiobooks at night or in the car. Listening to audiobooks or listening to someone read aloud benefits everyone. Reading aloud helps build vocabulary skils while listening builds vocabulary and listening comprehension skills, and also increases our knowledge. Adults can model lifelong learning by participating in the program with their children, grandchildren, neighbors, friends. Help your children prevent the Summer Slide by reading 20 minutes a day this summer! Sign up, track your reading, and earn incentives. 10

MORE WAYS TO BEAT THE SUMMER SLIDE!

• Cook with your children. This is one of the best ways to integrate math, reading and following directions. Help your child put together their favorite recipes in a cookbook or let your child design the menu for a meal. • Plant a garden. Your child will learn responsibility and take pride as they watch their plants grow and thrive. • Take a field trip. Head out to a museum, zoo or local park with walking trails. Keep a journal about your travels. • Learn a new word each week. Hang it on the fridge and see who can use it the most times throughout the week. • Enroll in our summer reading program as it will provide your child with opportunities to build their critical thinking skills. • Play quick games with flashcards like Math War or Concentration to keep math skills sharp. • Listen to audiobooks during your summer road trip. • Take pictures and make a summer scrapbook. Encourage your children to write narratives to accompany the pictures. • Make time to read. We can't stress it enough: if your child does nothing else this summer, make sure they read! Why Should You Read Aloud to your Children? by Sarah Brown, Librarian, Downtown Library Every year, research continues to highlight how reading is a fundamental building block to learning. Literacy can impact graduation rates, earning potential, justice-involvement, and even health outcomes. The simple act of reading to your children is one of the easiest ways you can set them up for success. There are many documented benefits, but they can all fall within three categories: language, connection, and socioemotional. 1. Language Children acquire the bulk of their early language skills through listening. From birth, reading to your children allows them to pick up the different sounds words make and how language flows, which helps them when they begin speaking. As children grow older, being able to follow along in a book while being read to, builds a connection between written and spoken words, increases vocabulary, and helps develop fluency once they begin to read. A great place to start is by reading picture books to your children. The pictures will draw their interest and studies have shown that picture books contain 70% more unique words than what children hear through normal conversation, so they can significantly increase their vocabulary by listening to them. 2. Connection Children are not the only ones receiving the benefits of reading together. The quality time spent reading allows parents to create happy memories and strengthen the bond with their children. Having dedicated time to read to your children also helps everyone to decompress and interact outside of the hustle and bustle of the day. This time of togetherness can give children the opportunity to share their worries or feelings in a safe place. Reading aloud, especially a variety of books, also aids children in discovering where their interests lie and shows them the joy in reading. This can be even more important for neurodivergent kids. Being read to allows them access to books they wouldn’t have otherwise and without the stress that can come with learning to read on their own. 3. Socio-Emotional Books are a terrific way for children to learn about others and explore the world. When children hear stories about how characters navigate obstacles or see the world, they learn how to adapt those behaviors into their own lives. They also offer the opportunity for parents to delve

into different topics with their children. For instance, choosing a book that focuses on certain emotions can help your child to learn how to recognize and process their own big feelings. Sitting down to listen to a book even helps with basic things like increasing children's attention spans, learning how to control their own behavior, and soothing anxiety. It can sometimes feel awkward or intimidating if you are not used to reading aloud. So here are a few things to keep in mind. 1. Start early, even newborns can receive positive benefits from being read to. 2. Add it to your routine. 3. Let your children choose the books. 4. It is okay to read the same book over and over. It still provides the same benefits. 5. You can read any book to your kids if you deem it appropriate, not just picture books. 6. Even after kids can read to themselves, keep going! 7. Asking questions about the story or having your child guess what they think will happen next, is an effective way to take their learning a step further. This helps with comprehension, understanding the theme of the book, and critical thinking. 8. Don’t be afraid to get creative. Do silly voices for each character, get stuffed animals to act out the scenes, sing, or create games based on the book. Let your children’s imaginations run wild! 9. Be a good role model. Children are more likely to want to read if they see their parents reading often. 10. Remember, if you are having fun and reading with your child, you can’t go wrong!
