hough not as sexy as the moon bound Apollo missions, NASA’s Project Gemini was a robust human spaceflight program that paved the way for future lunar landings. From 1965-1966 twelve Gemini missions allowed astronauts to practice docking with other craft, extravehicular activity (EVA), orbital maneuvering, lengthy missions and rescue operations—all necessary for the success of the moon landing. The Gemini IX mission was scheduled for May 9, 1966, and the two-man crew included Elliott See and Charles Bassett. Weatherford, Oklahoma native Tom Stafford and Gene Cernan were the backup crew. The mission would include three different docking procedures and a long spacewalk using a newly developed jetpack (AMU) worn on an astronaut’s back. The mission was fraught with setbacks from

Stafford in Gemini IX

the beginning. In February, both crews flew in separate aircraft from Houston to observe the construction of the Gemini at the McDonnell plant in St. Louis. While attempting to land in snow and fog, the plane piloted by Elliott See crashed into the very building housing their spacecraft, killing the primary crew instantly.

Stafford and Cernan were thrust into the role of primary crew, the only time that happened in the history of the space program. Gemini IX’s problems didn’t end there. The craft was not designed for the AMU so engineers had to devise a way to allow Cernan to exit the craft and don the AMU in space. They decided to use a new material to allow the astronaut to cling to the craft during the procedure—Velcro. With 80 hook strips attached to the craft and loop strips attached to his gloves and boots, Cernan would crawl to a rear storage area and the AMU. There was also a two-day launch delay caused by a control room error. As mission commander, Stafford was approached by an official who informed him that if Cernan were to die during his EVA, he would have to retrieve the body and return it to Earth—NASA couldn’t afford a dead astronaut floating around in space. Stafford quickly pointed out a number of challenges, not the least of which leaving the craft himself in a suit that was not designed for EVA. Ultimately, he said, “I’m the commander. If something goes wrong, I’ll make the decision!” For one of the docking procedures, a dummy craft, the Augmented Target Docking Adaptor (ATDA) was lifted into space before Gemini IX’s launch. The ATDA dock had a shroud over it to protect it during launch and the shroud was to eject after reaching orbit. However, once Stafford saw the ATDA he exclaimed, “Look at that moose! The shroud is half open on that thing!” When asked for clarification from ground control, Stafford famously remarked, “It looks like an angry alligator out here rotating around.” The procedure was canceled. McDonnell had built the ATDA, but Lockheed built the propulsion and Douglas

built the shroud. On the day the shroud was fitted by McDonnell, a Douglas engineer was on hand to oversee, but he got word that his wife had gone into labor so he left, telling the McDonnell crew to be sure to secure the shroud. They saw two cables hanging loose and,

ADTA (Angry Alligator)

not knowing they were the release cables, used good ol’ duct tape to secure them to the sides. Sure enough, Stafford’s photographs revealed the shroud was held in place by two strips of tape. Despite these and numerous other errors, the mission was not a failure. Stafford, as command pilot, earned a reputation as a calm and fearless leader and exceptional pilot, much of which he exhibited on this mission. He and Cernan were together again on Apollo 10 exactly three years later, making the final preparations for the first moon landing. Larry “Buddy” Johnson has been with MLS since 1998. Not only a librarian at the Downtown Library, he is the brilliant mind behind the Oklahoma Images database which is a collection of pictures and essays that illustrate the history of central Oklahoma.

The Secrets of Sloane House by Shelley Shepard Gray Rosalind Perry loved her sister, Miranda, so when Miranda’s letters stopped arriving at their farm in Wisconsin, Rosalind determined to find out why. She went to Chicago, where the 1893 World’s Fair was in full swing, and got a job at the same mansion where Miranda had been working as a maid. In Sloane House, the work was difficult and the family members were demanding. The adult son was overly friendly, and the adult daughter, Veronica, made it clear that she would have Rosalind fired if she didn’t please her. Veronica was not at all pleased when Reid Armstrong, a wealthy young man on whom Veronica had pinned her matrimonial hopes, began to take notice of Rosalind. When two other maids disappeared from Sloane

reviewed by Phyllis Davidson House, Rosalind began to lose hope of finding out what happened to Miranda. Would Rosalind ever be able to help her sister, or would she be the next maid to disappear? I’m looking forward to the second book in the Chicago World’s Fair mysteries, Deception on Sable Hill, where class roles reverse as a wealthy young woman falls for a lowly police detective. The Secrets of Sloan House is available in print, large print, audio disc, eBook and eAudiobook. Phyllis Davidson is a reference librarian at the Downtown Library. She is the editor of a family newsletter, teaches genealogy classes to customers at the library, and delves into her own family history outside the Library walls.

More Rain by M. Ward The best thing about M. Ward is the way he blends genres. His music is bits of country, indie, pop and folk all rolled around on a California beach at sunset as a rain shower rolls in. Some songs are more like a dark dusty small-town-America bar in the middle of the afternoon, full of melancholy nostalgia. No Rain is his first album release since 2012, and his eighth studio album. It opens with a 1 minute rain track that you are either going to love or think is a bit too concept. My favorite tracks on the album are Temptation, and Slow Driving Man (dreamy and lethargic), while I’m Listening and Little Baby mix in a bit of 50’s doo wop. Pirate Dial is probably my favorite of the whole album, at least on first listen. No

reviewed by Reagan Kloiber stranger to Beach Boys covers, this album also features a great cover of “You’re So Good to Me.” I’ve always loved a good heading-into-summeralbum and I think this could be that. It reminds me of rainy afternoons curled up in big chairs with books; see through curtains, and hardwood floors. It’s rainy spring road trips through small towns and lots of sitting on porches and staring at the landscape. It’s sunset Polaroids and porch swings; Country twang and wholesomeness. Reagan Kloiber has worked for the Metropolitan Library System for the past 12 years, first as a library aide and currently as a circulation clerk. She is a contributor to the Library System’s DogEared Blog and an artist in her spare time.

Out of Sorts: Making Peace with an Evolving Faith by Sarah Bessey What would it mean if your walk of faith suddenly ended up in the wilderness? Are you allowed to have questions, doubts, skepticism and still claim to be faithful? Sarah Bessey, author of Out of Sorts and Jesus Feminism says yes. Faith can handle your questions, and spending time in the wilderness does not shatter your faith, but rather strengthens it. Bessey tackles the tough questions that seekers face during seasons of difficulties with the church, pain, healing, questions and waiting. In a vulnerable admission, she writes the story of her own wilderness and reassures the rest of us wanderers. Through disillusionment, dissatisfaction and disengagement, she walks us through

reviewed by Jennifer Jones her journey, ending up full circle yet with a new understanding of what it means to “follow,” and how to learn to appreciate and even feel comfortable in the wilderness. This book makes great book club or small group study material and even includes discussion questions that spur raw and honest conversations, helping enable acceptance of disagreements, feelings and doubts.

A Thousand Naked Strangers: a Paramedic’s Wild Ride to the Edge and Back by Kevin Hazzard Imagine the flood of relief one gets when paramedics pull into view, sirens blaring. Medically trained, prepared for anything, EMTs walk calmly into the carnage and the bystander can relax in the knowledge that everything is going to be okay. If that’s the image you want to hold on to, don’t read this book. If, on the other hand, you’re ready for a heartpounding, adrenaline-drenched descent into the grisly, check it out. Kevin Hazzard’s quest for meaning came after September 11th. He enrolled in an EMT program, graduated in a matter of months, and stumbled into a job. His first ride on an ambulance threw him into the belly of a nursing home – “slow death in an industrial setting.” Hazzard’s patient vomits blood all over the back of the meat wagon and all over him. His partner pays a local homeless man $10 to clean up the mess. It’s an initiation

reviewed by Jana Hausburg into his new normal, where black humor is the only way to cope with a parade of freak shows. According to Hazzard, his coworkers begin as “tourists,” evolve into “true believers,” and, if they’re lucky, retire before becoming “killers.” At one point, Hazzard ponders the Perfect Call – what would constitute “perfection in the form of a 911 call.” Would the patient have to live? Ultimately, he decides the answer is no. We may think that it takes a hero to do this kind of job. Hazzard says the true requirement is not bravery, but something else. “Medics don’t have to be heroic or tough or even good people. They simply have to enjoy the madness.” Jana Hausburg has always been fascinated by words and stories. When daydreaming, she imagines challenging literary giants Dorothy Parker, Robert Benchley and Mark Twain to a game of Scrabble.

I Am Malala by Malala Yousafzai with Christina Lamb I Am Malala is the autobiography of Pashtun youth, Malala Yousafzai, who made international news for boldly requesting education for girls in her country of Pakistan. At 18 years old, the violence she has experienced for her public request would turn a weaker soul to seek revenge. As if Malala is journaling, I Am Malala is a gentle narrative thick with detail. The story references a great deal of Middle Eastern religious and political history, as well as the escalating turmoil of the region. A glossary and events section included at the book’s conclusion helps navigate unfamiliar Pashtun words and numerous tragic happenings. 8 n info METROPOLITAN LIBRARY SYSTEM magazine n May 2016
