Queenie
by Larry Johnson
In Oklahoma City, where boosterism can sometimes take on an almost religious fervor, attracting major conventions has always been the holy grail. It was that way in the 1890s and it’s still that way today as we saw during the sometimes heated discussions over the $250 million dollar MAPS 3 convention center. 4 n info METROPOLITAN LIBRARY SYSTEM magazine n September 2014
For booster capitalists of the early 20th century, there was no greater prize than a convention because of the all-boats-rise effect on the local economy stemming from the injection of large amounts of “foreign” dollars and the immeasurable public relations benefit to the city. So, after completion of fast transcontinental railroad networks, travel to conventions became convenient on a national scale. Thus the cornerstone to Oklahoma City’s convention efforts was the exploitation of the city’s location in the geographic center of the country. However, a central location was not enough because conventioneers generally desired to partake of vice while away from home. And in dry Oklahoma City that kind of fun was outlawed. One of the first big conventions Oklahoma City attracted took place 100 years ago – the annual convention of the Panhandle-Southwestern Stockmen’s Association in 1914. Special trains brought nearly 5000 attendees from all over the southwest and as far away as Kansas City and Chicago. So many came that the Daily Oklahoman proclaimed, “Southwestern Stockmen Take Possession of City” in one of its headlines. The visitors were welcomed by the host city and hundreds of residents donated the use of their automobiles to provide sightseeing tours of the proud metropolis. Visiting wives were escorted for shopping junkets around town.
Conventioneers attended to the business of the association during the day and at night were entertained by various balls, concerts and other cultured activities sponsored by local women’s clubs. On the
On the ranchers’ last night in town, however, a “smoker” (what we would call a stag party today) was held at the city auditorium and a dancer named “Queenie” was brought in from Chicago. ranchers’ last night in town, however, a “smoker” (what we would call a stag party today) was held at the city auditorium and a dancer named “Queenie” was brought in from Chicago. Queenie performed so well that the men called for several encores and by the end of the evening Queenie left the stage with fewer clothes than when she
began – none in fact. A spy was present that night, though, and the next morning the local women’s clubs were made aware of the event at an ad hoc meeting at the Carnegie Library. They decided to call for a federal investigation into the “gross insult thrust at the womanhood of our city” by “importing a woman for immoral purposes”. Federal authorities determined that Queenie did, in fact, dance “sans veils, sans beads, sans everything,” and charges were brought against the businessmen who organized the event and the auditorium manager but the case was quickly thrown out of court with no punishment meted out. One observer reported that, although no one went to jail, doghouses in the some of the city’s ritziest homes found new tenants. Meanwhile, major conventions continue to elude the city. The MAPS 3 convention center might be the remedy. And who knows? Maybe it’s more fun in town than in 1914…

Surviving Henry: Adventures in Loving a Canine Catastrophe By Erin Taylor Young I’ve known some boneheaded dogs, but this one takes the cake. Surviving Henry is an entertaining slice of life about hard headed boxer Henry and his tenacious owners. There are many laugh-out-loud moments, like when hydrophobic Henry launches himself off a dock- not once-not twice-but multiple times, spurring an adventure in canine life jackets, or when Henry develops the “bark, bark, butt nip” routine, his unique way of insisting on playtime, and Erin’s inventive methods of getting Henry exercised. Also woven into the humorous situations are some not-so- funny accidents. (Erin needs a helmet and pads!) Injuries aside, the thing that struck me the most about this book was not the comedic situations but the enduring tenderness that Erin has for Henry and
reviewed by Jennifer Jones her absolute resolve for turning him into a well trained pet. She endures hours of obedience classes, countless moments of humiliation (Henry always greets the dog trainer by piddling on him—always) and risks her personal safety to give Henry a shot at being the best dog he can be. Surviving Henry is an apt title for title for this book. The word survival indicates some sort of triumph, and even if Henry never becomes the Lassie among boxers, the Youngs still come out on top for their refusal to give up on the commitment they made when they became pet owners. Surviving Henry is now available to check out! Jennifer is the Marketing Coordinator for the Metropolitan Library System. She loves reading, road trips, cooking, live music, and doing fun, spontaneous things with her kids.

The Railway Man By Eric Lomax I’ll admit that this is one of those books that I would never have come across if it weren’t for the publicity from the film adaptation and the prospect of Colin Firth in the lead role! The title also appealed to me. I have always loved anything to do with trains and train journeys so when I saw a copy of The Railway Man in the bookstore when on vacation I bought a copy. Eric Lomax grew up in Scotland during the height of the steam train era in the 1920s. As a young boy he became an enthusiastic train spotter just outside Edinburgh. As a British Signals Officer he was sent East during the Second World War and, ironically for a train

reviewed by Christine Bassett enthusiast, finds himself involved in the building of the Burma-Siam railway. Lomax becomes a prisoner of war and develops a deep hatred for his torturers, and for one man in particular, for over 50 years. In The Railway Man Lomax tells his life story and how he is able to have peace in his life again even in his final years. This is well worth reading, even for those who usually don’t stray into the nonfiction section in the library. Christine Bassett has worked for MLS for over 10 years. She currently works as a reference librarian at Bethany Library and is a volunteer community literacy tutor in her spare time.

I was a scrappy girl from the Quarter, trying to make good. No matter how I parted my hair, I couldn’t part from the crack I had crawled out of.” --- Josie Moraine, Out of the Easy. Josie Moraine lives life day to day. Early mornings she cleans the brothel for Madam Willie Woodley. Following that, Josie can be found working at the bookstore on Dauphine Street in New Orleans, also know as the Big Easy. At closing time, she climbs the back stairs to the little apartment she calls home. While it may not sound like much of a life to some, it’s all she’s got and it’s a whole lot better than her mother could provide. Josie is hard working, making the best of things but dreams haunt her for something better. One day a
handsome well-dressed stranger comes into the bookstore and Josie admires his casual manner even though he is obviously well-to-do. Upon leaving the store, he wishes her luck at college and firmly plants the seed in Josie’s mind that she is indeed college material. Readers will be swept into this fast-moving story that’s part mystery, part coming-of-age story set in the historic French Quarter where the air hangs thick with secrets old and new.

Suspicion by Joseph Finder

Author and single father Danny Goodman is unable to pay his daughter Abby’s tuition to Lyman Academy. Not only can he not pay the tuition for the semester he cannot fund her school-sanctioned $5000 trip of a lifetime to Italy. The advance on his last book is gone, and since the death of his ex-wife from cancer, he hasn’t written a word. Oddly enough, Thomas Galvin the father of Abby’s new best friend, Jenna, insists on lending Danny $50,000. Thomas says it’s for his daughter’s happiness. This is Jenna’s fourth school in three years. For Abby’s sake, Danny accepts the money. The next day things get worse for Danny. Drug Enforcement Administration agents Slocum and Yeager want to know why Thomas Galvin paid him $50,000. They tell Danny that without signed loan papers he is a
co-conspirator in the international narcotics trade. The book is aptly named for there is plenty of suspicion to go around. Can Danny really stay out of prison by informing on Thomas Galvin’s activities to the DEA? Is Thomas really working for one of Mexico’s largest drug cartels? Joseph Finder is one of my favorite thriller writers, and this book doesn’t disappoint as it twists and turns to its resolution.
Ruby Soutiere has the best job ever, selecting the adult fiction for the Metropolitan Library System. If you are quick, you might see her, in her free time, zipping around the city in a white roadster, red curls flying.

Blood Song: a Raven’s Shadow Novel By Anthony Ryan This story is about a boy that grows up in a monastic order whose purpose is to defend his home with the sword. His trials are harsh and as he comes into his own, he is drawn into a struggle against a dark power that threatens to topple not only the order, but the kingdom it serves. He learns very quickly that he is different and not everything within the order is as it seems. At 582 pages, this book seems like a daunting endeavor but when you reach the end, you’ll be shocked and dismayed that there are no more pages left to turn; no more words to paint this wonderful story. But fear not, the saga continues in Tower Lord, book 2 in the series.

Jacson Melvin is a computer tech at the Downtown library. When not helping with computers, you can find him meandering around downtown with his nose stuck in book. He’s become fairly adept at walking and reading and only very rarely finds himself walking into signs, light posts, or the occasional flight of stairs.

Love Life by Rob Lowe Having read Rob Lowe’s first book, I was keen to read Love Life. Lowe discusses parenting, acting, and cultivating an attitude of gratefulness in this entertaining follow-up memoir. Even celebrities have humbling moments as parents. Two the book’s more amusing parenting anecdotes are about overbearing little league moms and dads, and uncomfortably getting recognized on a school field trip to Sea World. On a more serious note, his bittersweet feelings about his son going away to college are quite moving. In these moments, he’s just a normal dad with an unusual job. To keep his work challenging and to avoid getting typecast as the handsome leading man, he chooses roles that are a stretch. He won a Golden Globe for one such role as Liberace’s doctor in Behind the Candelabra. For this character he had his face pulled back tightly

reviewed by Alexis Whitney to resemble someone with excessive plastic surgery, making him almost unrecognizable. The book offers an interesting view of the behind the scenes efforts that go into such transformative roles. Along with family and work, Lowe presents the commonsense idea that life is what you make of it, and you should learn to love it, because it’s the only one you will get. There is one sentiment I have to disagree with: “Has there ever been a more horrific barrier to reading than the Dewey Decimal System? No wonder libraries are becoming irrelevant.” Tsk. Tsk. Apart from that zinger, Love Life is a light and enjoyable summer read that humanizes a well known public figure. Alexis Whitney is the Adult Services librarian at the fabulous Almonte Library. She is usually reading three or four books concurrently, which makes her stay up way too late at night.
