Infernaisquicklybecomingnot justoneofmyfavoritelocalbands, butoneofmyfavoritebandsperiod. Thisreleaseisfurtherevidenceto drivethatpointhome.

Infernadoesn'twastetimeormince wordswiththeirmusic;theentire albumislessthan15minuteslong. Itopenswith"Poison",aface-meltin tracktosetthestandardforthe assaulttocome.Everytrackonthis releaseisstrong,noskipsinsight. Thefinaltrack,"FalseMorality",

sumsupthemessageofInferna,thatAllareequal,andbrutality awaitsthosewhodon'tbelieveit."Patheticattemptstooutlaw existence/You’reweak/You’rejealous/Attheliberationof genderedfreedom." Irecentlywentwith afriendtothe Sanctuarytosee Stepmom, EndocrineTwins, andPons. Whenwefirst walkedintoThe Sanctuary,they explainedthatyou canbringyourown beerordrinks,you justhavetoshow yourID.Iamunder 21,andmyfriend wasn’tinterestedin drinking,sowe

justgotanXonourhandsandwereabletohaveournon-alcoholic drinkswehadbroughtwithus.

Inbetweenthesets,myfriendandIwentoutsidetoasmallarea withlotsofchairstotalk.Becauseoftheniceweatherthatevening anditbeingmuchquieter,Ireallylikedhavingamomenttoletmy mindrelax,asIcangetoverstimulatedbytoomuchnoise.

ThefirstbandtoperformwasEndocrineTwins.Theyusedalot ofcoolsoundsandrepetitionthatmadeitreallyenjoyabletolisten to.NextwasPons.Theiruseofdrums,alongwithvocalsdrenched inecho,madeforafunsoundthatwaseasytodancealongto.

ThefinalbandwasStepmom,whoIhadseenpreviouslyat NormanMusicFestivaltwice,andIhavealwaysenjoyedtheirsets.

Thistimewasnodisappointment.Stepmomhadsometechnical difficultiesstartingout,buttheypushedthroughandgavean amazingperformance.Theyinteractedwiththecrowd,havingus dancealong.Itwasanallaroundgreattime.

ThiswasmyfirsttimevisitingTheSanctuary,andIreallylikedit. ItwasanamazingexperienceandIwilldefinitelybereturningand Iwouldenjoyseeingallthebandsagain!-AleisterAttack

SostokedtoseeGelthatIboughtourticketsbackinMaywhenI foundouttheywerecomingto89thStreettokickofftheirsummer tour,andIwasnotdisappointed.IfyouarenotfamiliarwithGelthey areahardcorebandoutofNewJerseywhoreleasedtheirdebut album,OnlyConstantbackinMarch.

LocalhardcorebandOtisVCRopened,followedbytheBaltimore basedband,TruthCult(pleasecheckthembothoutifyouhavenot already).

IfyougetachancetocatchOtisVCRinOKCdoitandifyouhappento beinacityonGel'ssummertourstopdoyourselfafavorandgo spendyournightdancingtosomehardcoreforthefreaks.That'sit.

A Talk With: Inferna

LocalcrustpunkbandInfernaismadeupof4members:Zach(Guitar andsongwriting),hiswifeHillary(StagenameHellray,Vocalsand songwriting),andtheirfriendsCory(Drums)andJake(Guitar).

Sittingdownwiththeband,theywerereallykindandwelcoming. Wetouchedonsubjectsofinspiration,projects,influences,and uniquechallengesthatmusiciansfaceinthisdayandage.

Whatinitiallyinspiredyoutobecomemusicians?

Zachnotedthathehadsomechildhoodexperiencesplayingtheviolin anddrumsbutthattheydidn’tquitefituntilheheardbandslike GreenDayandTheRamones,whichinspiredhimtogetintoelectric guitar.Corysaidthatheplayeddrumsinthe6thgradeandenjoyed it,butwasreallyinspiredandfiredupbythegroupSTOMPandthe movieSchoolofRockwhichfeaturesactorJackBlackasamusic teacherforchildrenofallwalksoflife,teachingthemconfidenceand theloveofmusic.Hillarysaidthatalotofherinspirationcamefrom feelinglikenobodylistenedtoher,andthatifsheliterallyhada microphoneandscreamedintoittheywouldhavetolisten.

Whatissomethingaboutyourmusicthatwouldsurprisesomeone unfamiliarwithit?Zachwasthefirsttoanswerthisone,sayingthat oneoftheirsongswasinspiredbyDragonAge.Theyallnotedasa groupthatbehindalltheblackshirtsandhardmusic,theyareallbig nerdsenjoyinganimeandtabletoproleplayinggameslikeDungeons andDragons,MagicTheGathering,andWarHammer.

Whatisyourfavoritepartofyourprocess?Hillaryspokeupfirst aboutthis,sayingthatusuallyeverysongbeginswithZachandJake riffingwitheachotheronthecouch,thentakingthattoCorywho implementsthedrums,andThenshewillimplementherlyrics.Zach saidthatheandtheytakeinspirationfromtheoldMotownwaysof producingsongs,inanassemblyline.Thegroupconcludedthattheir favoritepartoftheprocesswaswherealloftheirindividualtalents cametogethertocreateasongandperforming.

Whatisyourdreamgig?Thisquestionproducedinterestinganswers, goingfromEuropeanandJapanesetourswithbandsthatinspiretheir sound,fromthebackofaflatbedtrailertobeingthefirstcrustpunk bandtoplaythemoon.“Shootforthemoon.”-Zach.

Intermsofshootingforthemoon,Iasked:Whatisaunique challengeformusiciansinthisdayandage?Hillarywasthefirstto speakonthis,sayingthatduetotheexpansionoftheinternetitcan bereallyhardtomakeyourmarkinaverysaturatedmusicspace,and thatitcanbedifficulttogetpeopletocomeouttoshowswhenthere isalwayssomuchtodo.Zachnotedthatpost-covidtherearemore reasonsthanevertostayhome,andthatduetomusicsaturationitis veryeasyforpeopletocurateplaylistsofaveryspecificvibeandto leavethatcomfortzone.Isaidthatthissoundedbleakforthepunk scene,butZachsaidto“ShakethoseSorry’s”becausethenight beforetheinterviewtheyhadplayedanincredibleshowatthelibrary. Coryalsosaidthatduetothesaturation,punkwasreachingyounger audiences,whowillcontinuewiththeirinspirationtakenfrompunk musictomakemorepunkmusic,andthatevenwiththeinternetand shortformcontentlikeTiktokandyoutube,thatpunkwillalwaysbe around.

Whatissomethingyouwanttosaytoalltheyoungmusiciansjust startingout?Zachsaidto“Justgetstarted,grabsomefriendsand instrumentsandjuststart!Havefun,don’tbeafraidto****up!”Hillary saidthatwhenenteringtheartisticspacetoalwaysbeauthenticand honest.Astheinterviewwaswindingdown,Iaskedthelastandmost heavyquestion,Whatclassicsongwouldyouwanttocoveronthe kazoo?Thegroupfoundthisamusing,andsaidthattheywouldlove tocoversongslikeDarudeSandstorm,RainbowintheDarkbyDio, andSymptomoftheUniversebyBlackSabbath.
