It is time to celebrate New York City’s biggest design event of the year! As executive director of NYCxDESIGN, I am thrilled to welcome you to our annual Festival. After last year’s hiatus, watching this event come to life again has cemented that design is core to New York City’s creative identity and essential to stewarding the city’s renewal in ways that bring more equity, access, and inclusion to bear. Over the past nine years, the Festival each year has welcomed hundreds of thousands of attendees from around the country and the world to events that showcase the very best in design. At its core, the Festival is dedicated to the immense talent and diversity of the city’s designers, makers, and 4 NYCxDESIGN

manufacturers, along with cutting-edge design businesses and districts, and world-class cultural and academic design institutions. With hundreds of design events around innovation, creativity, culture, inclusivity, sustainability, and resiliency, the Festival truly anchors New York City as the destination for the world’s best creative talent to come together and celebrate all things design. Last year, NYCxDESIGN became a nonprofit organization, catalyzing new efforts toward empowering and supporting the future of our city’s expansive design community. With year-round programming and a focus on community-building, NYCxDESIGN is increasing diversity, equitable opportunity, and inclusion within the city’s design sector. We strive each day to uplift the diverse work and voices of our community across the boroughs, deepening ties between designers, makers, suppliers, and design-adjacent initiatives and enterprises, and providing exposure and education about design. We see the enormous potential for design to generate lasting change in creating a thriving and more harmonious New York City, and we champion these initiatives by continuing to build space and opportunities for our most creative minds to flourish. So much of this year has been about reinvigorating and even reinventing New York City as we know it. I find design inspiration everywhere, and see possibilities all around us. I cannot wait to see them in action this November. On behalf of the NYCxDESIGN team, we thank our partners, sponsors, event organizers, and attendees for making this edition of the Festival a success. We hope you enjoy the week, and we look forward to celebrating the Festival’s 10th Anniversary with you next year, in May 2022.

Welcome to the sixth edition of the Official Guide to NYCxDESIGN. Design is all around us here in New York City, and NYCxDESIGN’s annual Festival is one of the largest celebrations of creativity in North America. This handy, pocket-size guide is the best way to learn about NYCxDESIGN and its programs, find the essential places and events to visit during the special edition of the Festival (Nov 11-18), and discover landmarks and destinations you can return to again and again. Throughout the year, NYCxDESIGN supports and celebrates the city’s creative community through exceptional programming and initiatives. See the NYCxDESIGN 2020-21 section (p. 9) to discover the impact the nonprofit has made with emerging and established designers. Use this Guide to then dive into the Festival with the three trade fairs and exhibits at the Javits Center—ICFF, WantedDesign, and BDNY— all featuring new product releases, talent showcases, and all-day programming. Dozens of other events and happenings are taking place throughout the city, and you can plan your itinerary using the Events section (p. 27). The rest of the Guide is organized by neighborhood and spans all five boroughs. Each section contains a detailed map and listings for showrooms, galleries, institutions, and destinations. Scan the QR codes sprinkled throughout this Guide to discover additional content, and curated itineraries, to help you make the most of design in New York this year. And for even more, visit nycxdesign.com, or tune into The Mic (p. 112), NYCxDESIGN’s inspiring podcast hosted by Debbie Millman. Even in these challenging times, after a dark period in its history, New York City is bursting at the seams with energy and creativity. So take advantage of all the city has to offer over the next few months, and I’ll see you again at next year’s NYCxDESIGN Festival! —Avinash Rajagopal, editor in chief of Metropolis 6 NYCxDESIGN

The Breakout Grant A new NYCxDESIGN program demonstrates the range of design ecosystems that New York generates and supports. One of NYCxDESIGN’s first initiatives as a nonprofit organization was to establish its Breakout Grant program. The Grant provides funding to help designers implement a product or project that is in pre-market, late-stage development and that reinforces design in service of broader social good. Selected by a jury of distinguished designers with New York ties, the three winners will be able to pursue the next steps of their projects and give back in more ways than one.

Brooklyn-based Modos Furniture is focused on developing products with a positive societal and ecological impact. An intuitive, tool-free system of reclaimed plastic connectors and boards made of FSC-certified wood yields elegant furniture that is easily disassembled to suit ever-changing spatial needs. Modos sees much potential in this low-cost solution for addressing the needs of those with limited resources, those affected by natural disasters, or micro-businesses in need of adaptable furnishings. The grant funding will help the Modos team partner with new material suppliers to source recycled plastic, as well as secure a design patent, scale up, and support an ongoing partnership with the Brooklyn Navy Yard and the Department of Education.

DISASTER RELIEF – FOLDING POD Inspired by their belief that “home is a human right,” sisters Gisue and Mojgan Hariri, the architects behind Hariri & Hariri Architecture, seek to transform housing for the most vulnerable around the world with their Disaster Relief Folding Pod. Tens of millions of people live in refugee camps, having been displaced by war, natural disaster, famine, and other calamities. However, the technology to house them—fabric tents—has hardly changed in two centuries. The Folding Pod presents an alternative emergency shelter. Inspired by origami, the modest dwelling is made of lightweight panels, is easily shipped, and unfolds with the push of a button. Funding from the Breakout Grant will support further prototyping and material development of the Folding Pod.

An Ode to NYC Creative leaders once again display their affection for the city.

Stitched Together Liz Collins

In the darkest days of the COVID-19 pandemic, NYCxDESIGN unveiled An Ode to NYC—a citywide poster exhibition inspired by Milton Glaser’s iconic “I ♥ NY” logo. During the inaugural edition of the campaign in October 2019, the organization teamed up with 21 designers from the New York area to create a collection of graphic expressions of love for the city’s enduring creative spirit. NYCxDESIGN continued the program this year with 16 new designers whose creations are on view around the five boroughs. The posters can be found everywhere, from design showrooms to restaurants and retail stores, and even digitally projected onto major city landmarks. They are available for sale through The Poster House Shop website (shop.posterhouse.org/shop/nycxdesign/), with proceeds going to Silicon Harlem, a nonprofit working to bring more equitable internet connection to all New Yorkers.

IMPACTxDESIGN

Outdoor public gathering space has always been a precious commodity in New York City, and ever since the COVID-19 pandemic hit, it has become even more essential to reconnecting, reenergizing, and reestablishing community. The first edition of NYCxDESIGN’s IMPACTxDESIGN competition, presented in partnership with Caesarstone, invited designers to submit proposals that introduced new opportunities for public gathering while employing Caesarstone’s outdoor material as the primary fabrication resource. The two winners, Kickie Chudikova and Karim Rashid, will work closely with NYCxDESIGN, Caesarstone, the Design Trust for Public Space, the Dumbo Improvement District, and the Downtown Alliance to refine their concepts for installation sites in Downtown Manhattan and Dumbo, Brooklyn.

SPIRAL OF LIFE BY KICKIE CHUDIKOVA

COURTESY KICKIE CHUDIKOVA/CAESARSTONE

Drawing inspiration from the waves of the Hudson River and the sculptures of Isamu Noguchi, Chudikova’s Spiral of Life offers a place to sit, contemplate, and reenergize while enjoying Dumbo vistas. The modular bench consists of waterjet-cut stone pieces connected by a single metal structure, forming an organic shape with a series of generously sized seats to accommodate social distancing.

The skeleton-like form of Kickie Chudikova’s Spiral of Life , shown in these renderings, was inspired by the waves of New York’s waterways. METROPOLIS 23

TURN OUT BY KARIM RASHID

COURTESY KARIM RASHID/CAESARSTONE

As teased in its name, Turn Out demonstrates creative use of negative space. In his proposal, designer Karim Rashid turns Caesarstone slabs on their sides, cutting out and repurposing abstract shapes to form a series of connected benches and tables. The sculpture offers a range of gathering spaces, from semi-enclosed areas to long, linear seating and playful zigzag layouts. It consists of just three elements cut from a single sheet of quartz to minimize material waste. The benches are also reconfigurable to ensure that the installation can evolve with the changing needs of its environment.

Mid Until the COVID-19 pandemic emptied the neighborhood’s towering office buildings and Broadway theaters, shuttering businesses that cater to tourists and commuters in the process, Midtown Manhattan was the beating economic and cultural heart of New York City. As the city reopens, look for signs of new life as well as familiar landmarks like Grand Central Terminal, the Empire State Building, and the New York Public Library. John Newman, partner at Loop Lighting in Manhattan, took this photo of a chandelier in Grand Central Terminal with modern lighting hidden just behind it. “Old and new, working as one,” he writes.

Chel Historically a place where artists, bohemians, and the queer community found refuge and inspiration, this West Side neighborhood has become both a tech hub and the epicenter of the city’s art scene. Home to numerous art galleries and design attractions as well as landmarks both old (the Chelsea Hotel, the Meatpacking District), and new (the High Line, the Whitney Museum of American Art), Chelsea offers something for everyone. Marybeth Shaw, chief creative officer of Chelsea-based design company Wolf Gordon, began collecting political posters while travelling in the Soviet Union during college and went on to collect artworks from left-wing causes around the world. “I think they clearly speak to my values, and have always informed my work in design,” she writes.

Design Destination NEW YORK DESIGN CENTER Located in a historic 16-story building designed by Ely Jacques Kahn in 1926, the New York Design Center was originally known as the New York Furniture Exchange—the nation’s oldest furniture and design building. In 1981, the 500,000-square-foot building was transformed into a hub of over 100 showrooms representing more than 500 lines of residential and contract furniture, fabric, flooring, lighting, and more. In addition to housing showrooms, the New York Design Center has introduced several initiatives including Access to Design, a program that connects customers with designers.

Soho The cast iron industrial buildings and cobblestone streets of Soho and Noho have lived many lives. Once an industrial hub, this area was transformed into a creative center by artists living and working there beginning in the 1970s. Among the notables was Donald Judd, whose home and studio on Spring Street now houses the Judd Foundation. Though a few artists still call the neighborhood home, today it is one of the city’s premier shopping districts, where major global retailers rub elbows with designer boutiques. Rodolfo Agrella, creative director of lighting brand Juniper, snapped this picture of the company’s Soho showroom. “I find inspiration in the lights that I pass by daily in the classic Soho lofts that surround our showroom on Crosby Street,” he writes.

Soho and Tribeca emerged from the gritty 1970s and 1980s when struggling artists moved into the area en masse. Still largely characterized by cobblestone streets and cast-iron buildings, the downtown Manhattan neighborhoods are now upscale shopping districts, and home to high-end showrooms, design studios, and restaurants.

The twisting brick facade of the five-story Unhistoric Townhouse by System Architects stands out as a local landmark. At the same time, its footprint and material palette complement Tribeca’s historic brick industrial buildings and Federal-style and classical revival homes.

Brook The many neighborhoods that make up New York City’s most populous borough are alive with energy, creativity, and diversity. From Greenpoint to Coney Island you will find landmarks like the Brooklyn Museum, Domino Park, and the Brooklyn Bridge, not to mention the design hubs of Industry City and the Brooklyn Navy Yards that have sprung up in former industrial areas. Aimée Wilder, founder and creative director of the studio that bears her name, photographed a piece of street art in her Brooklyn neighborhood. “This piece in Greenpoint caught my eye due to its striking simplicity and the color contrast against the gray-blue evening sky, as well as the texture of the industrial building,” she writes.

The Interior Design Pledge calls upon design professionals to understand, assess, and maximize the positive impact of our work by making three interconnected commitments:

DESIGN FOR CLIMATE The climate crisis is the greatest single threat to health and economic prosperity on the planet, and disproportionately affects vulnerable communities. Interior design professionals must reduce the negative impacts of climate change. D E S I G N FO R H E A LT H Both human and ecological health are essential components of a thriving society, and essential for the future of humanity on the planet. Interior design professionals must support holistic health and safety. DESIGN FOR EQUITY Social equity and climate justice are central to cohesive, safe, and resilient communities. Interior design professionals must promote diversity, inclusion, and equity.
