CELEBRATING 10 YEARS

6 | NYCxDESIGN

It’s the tenth anniversary edition of our NYCxDESIGN Festival, and we have much to celebrate! As Executive Director, I am delighted to welcome you back to our city’s annual design week for this milestone moment. This year’s Festival truly unites New York design in the most illuminating sense. Events feature the work of creatives that have remade, reimagined, and positively impacted our city in recent times of recovery, and of visionaries who have been core to the fabric of our design industry over the past decade. The Festival, during this special edition, anchors New York City as a key destination for hundreds of thousands of visitors to explore the best of design rooted in innovation, creativity, culture, and inclusivity. NYCxDESIGN exists as a nonprofit to bring together New York’s expansive design community and champion its positive impact on the creative economy. Our year-round programming creates more equitable opportunities, uplifts the

diverse work and voices of New York’s design community, and educates and inspires young people to become our designers of tomorrow. This year’s Festival continues to demonstrate New York’s global standing as a leading cultural and design capital. That’s something to commemorate! This year I’m looking forward to unveiling our IMPACTxDESIGN installations, visiting WantedDesign and ICFF at the Javits Center, exploring behind-the-scenes design across the boroughs on Open Studio Crawls, attending the NYCxDESIGN Awards and Opening Party on May 10, experiencing what’s in store at Design Pavilion, and being inspired by recent student work. On behalf of the NYCxDESIGN team, we thank our partners, sponsors, event organizers, and attendees for making this tenth anniversary edition of the Festival possible. We hope you enjoy the week, and we look forward to showcasing design with you again in May 2023.

Sincerely,

Elissa Black Executive Director of NYCxDESIGN NYCxDESIGN | 7

WELCOME TO THE OFFICIAL GUIDE TO NYCxDESIGN. For 10 years now, NYCxDESIGN has been the premier platform for showcasing design in all its forms in one of the most creative places in the world—New York City. This year’s tenth anniversary edition of NYCxDESIGN’s Festival (May 10–20) promises to be one of the most optimistic and exuberant happenings in the city, as New Yorkers celebrate their ability to harness design in service of creative problem-solving, new aesthetic expressions, and empowering communities during even the most challenging times. The pocket-sized Official Guide to NYCxDESIGN that you hold in your hands is an indispensable companion to all the events and opportunities at this year’s Festival, and a handy reference to the city’s design landmarks and destinations you can visit all year round. The Guide is chock-full of recommendations for things to do and see while you are in town for the Festival. We suggest you start with the Designers’ Picks from NYCxDESIGN’s Pulse Cohort (p.18): they have you covered on good spots to grab a bite, enjoy the outdoors, and learn a bit about this city’s architecture. Then you can dive into the five sections dedicated to neighborhoods in Manhattan—Uptown, Midtown, Chelsea, Nomad & Flatiron, Soho & Noho— followed by sections for Brooklyn, Queens, and Staten Island. Each section contains destinations and design showrooms recommended by Metropolis followed by listings for events during this year’s Festival. For even more, scan the QR codes sprinkled throughout this Guide to discover additional content and curated itineraries to help you make the most of design in New York this year. To round out your experience, visit nycxdesign.com and tune into the second season of The Mic (p. 110), NYCxDESIGN’s inspiring podcast hosted by Debbie Millman. A DECADE OF DESIGN Celebrating New York’s Unbridled Creativity

For a decade, the NYCxDESIGN Festival has offered a global stage to celebrate New York’s world-class designers, manufacturers, artists, and makers. Formed as a city-led initiative in 2013, NYCxDESIGN has evolved into a nonprofit with year-round programming while the Festival has become an internationally renowned event that unifies New York’s creative capital under one umbrella through hundreds of diverse events. Here are some highlights—year by year—from the past decade.

2013

In May 2013, NYCxDESIGN held its first Festival. Local leaders like city council speaker Christine Quinn (speaking) helped launch the event in Times Square.

The second edition of the NYCxDESIGN Festival featured over 200 events by 162 organizers at 181 venues. Installations included the “Cash Cow” piñata at Industry City by Sebastian Errazuriz.

2015

At NYCxDESIGN’s 2015 Festival, visitors explored the “Pansa/Panze” installation at WantedDesign, created by students in Parsons School of Design’s Temporary Environments elective.

2016

By 2016 the Festival had grown to over 500 events including the first edition of Design Pavilion, which featured a curated collection of creative structures and displays around Astor Place. NYCxDESIGN | 15

2017

2018

The 2018 Festival offered exhibitions, trade shows, talks, open studios, and installations like Camille Walala’s colorful, geometric mural at Industry City, commissioned by WantedDesign. 16 | NYCxDESIGN

2019

Events included the NYCxDESIGN Student Showcase Night at the New School, featuring projects by graduates from Cooper Union, FIT, Parsons School of Design, and School of Visual Arts.

This year offered more exhibits and events than ever, including installations by Bonotto (collaborating with Miniwiz), Martens & Visser, and graduates from several local design schools.

2020

2021

Rescheduled from its typical May date, the Festival foregrounded the resilience of the design community. The Hortensia armchair—covered in more than 30,000 flower petals—was on display at the Moooi Brand Store.

In-person events were cancelled due to the COVID-19 pandemic, but remote activities included NYCxDESIGN’s first virtual Town Hall Series, and the first edition of Ode to NYC.

Kickie Chudikova

Product and Furniture Designer

Building or Interior: I love the Chrysler Building for its unique aesthetics but also a bit of nostalgia. When I am in the neighborhood, I always make sure to sneak into the lobby—the marble and the doors on the lift are breathtaking. 18 | NYCxDESIGN

Outdoor Space: The garden of The Noguchi Museum, which is also one of my favorite museums in NYC. You can relax among the sculptures and beautiful trees; it feels very Zen. I go often since I live a quick bike ride away. New York Project You’ve Worked On: An outdoor public seating installation called Spiral of Life that I designed for the IMPACTxDESIGN competition, organized by NYCxDESIGN and sponsored by Caesarstone. It’s an undulating wave serving not only as a bench but also to uplift our spirits right in DUMBO, by the Brooklyn Bridge. It was unveiled as part of the 10th anniversary Festival!

COURTESY AURELIE JOUAN

Restaurant: Hard question. Since NYC has so many great places to enjoy food one could spend a lifetime trying a new one every day. However, a place I always return to is Faro in Brooklyn—get the dessert first! For special occasions I recommend Aska. The food and presentation are exquisite.

Building or Interior: It’s a tie between The Oculus at the World Trade Center or the Weil-Worgelt Study at the Brooklyn Museum. These are spaces I find myself revisiting with no agenda, so they definitely resonate with me. The Oculus feels like a destination more than a hub, and I always want to sit on the chairs in the WeilWorgelt and drink brandy (maybe one day).

22 | NYCxDESIGN

Outdoor Space: I wish I enjoyed grass more to be honest. One of my favorite outdoor spots is the rooftop at the Public hotel. Great 360-degree views. New York Project You’ve Worked On: Last year I designed a rooftop for MINI’s cars that supplanted the Union Jack that usually adorns them. I got to tell a personal story about my heritage and culture as a first-generation FilipinX immigrant through art, which was a great experience for me. It also existed as a huge mural in Bed-Stuy for a few weeks (thanks to the team at Colossal). Long story short, you can find it hopefully driving on the streets of New York, or on my website (richtu.com).

Restaurant: My most recent favorite dining experience was at Scarpetta, located in The James Hotel. Everything from arrival to exit was energetic, fun, and great for people-watching.

Building or Interior : I’m always amazed by the indoor yet urban scale of Grand Central’s main concourse. The peaceful presence of the constellations above and the chaotic pace of the station is fascinating.

Michael K. Chen

Principal, MKCA Architecture

Building or Interior: Whenever I’m in the neighborhood, and sometimes even when it’s out of the way, I slip into the lobby of the Chrysler Building and marvel at every single thing. 26 | NYCxDESIGN

Outdoor Space: The garden (and everything) at The Noguchi Museum. New York Project You’ve Worked On: Our private client work is mostly hidden away, unfortunately. You can’t visit the Children’s Library we designed there, but Concourse House in the Bronx hosts an annual outdoor art festival, including murals, and these incredible guerilla crochet installations on the fences along the Grand Concourse. A robust arts program is not something you expect to find in a shelter (for women and their children), but it’s such an inspiring thing to witness and participate in.

COURTESY MAX BURKHALTER

Restaurant: I’m going to kick myself for sharing! Cervo’s on Canal Street. It’s our neighborhood Iberian seafood, natural wine, and deliciousness spot. During the height of the pandemic, it was a wine store and market, and we went once a week; now it’s back to being the incredible restaurant that it was before. Always crowded, never anything other than wonderful.

Self-Guided Journeys FOLLOW NYCxDESIGN ON A DESIGN-FILLED JOURNEY ACROSS THE FIVE BOROUGHS North of Central Park, Harlem is a mecca of Black culture. During the Great Migration of the early 20th century, when hundreds of thousands of Black families sought a better life in New York, Upper Manhattan became their home. The epicenter of the Harlem Renaissance during the 1930s, the neighborhood remains a creative hub and mixing pot of cultures. Today, visitors can explore historic sites, eat world-renowned food, listen to incredible music, and take in the best of what Uptown has to offer. Heath Gallery

Harlem Haberdashery

Founded in 2002, Heath Gallery is a contemporary art gallery and community space located on the parlor floor of a landmark residential townhouse in Central Harlem’s historic Mount Morris Park district. The gallery was founded by husband-and-wife team Thomas Edwin and Saundra Alexis Heath to exhibit work by underrepresented artists, with special focus on those from Harlem.

Located in the former home of civil rights leader Malcolm X, Harlem Haberdashery has paid homage to the neighborhood’s rich history through fashion for nearly 30 years. Created by legendary customfashion design and styling company 5001 FLAVORS, the shop has dressed celebrities including the Notorious B.I.G., Jay-Z, LeBron James, CC Sabathia, and many others.

THEATER DISTRICT

Walking Tour with Architect David Rockwell David Rockwell, founder and president of cross-disciplinary design firm Rockwell Group, charts his interest in theater and set design back to his mother’s vaudeville career during his early childhood. “I became aware that environments could actually be choreographed and ultimately designed, and I was hooked,” he recalls. During the NYCxDESIGN Festival, Rockwell will lead an architectural tour of New York’s Theater District for students and members of the design trade. With Times Square at its center, it’s a neighborhood that embodies both grit and glamor, and one that Rockwell says developed alongside the American stage musical over the last 100-plus years, standing the test of time through ups and downs, economic and otherwise—just like New Yorkers themselves.

The tour begins at the Rockwell Group-designed CIVILIAN Hotel, a 27-story facility that celebrates theater and the ephemeral nature of Broadway.

Designed by Henry B. Herts and opened in 1913, the Longacre Theatre takes its name from Longacre Square, which is now known as Times Square. Both its detailed French-inspired facade and auditorium are New York City landmarks.

Designed by Henry Herts in the Italianate Style and opened in 1913, the Shubert was built for the Shubert brothers, who dominated the American theater industry in the early part of 20th century.

Once an industrial hub, this area was transformed into a creative center by artists living and working there beginning in the 1970s. Among the notables was Donald Judd, whose studio on Spring Street now houses the Judd Foundation. CLINTON HILL & FORT GREENE Self-Guided Journeys

FOLLOW NYCxDESIGN ON A DESIGN-FILLED JOURNEY ACROSS THE FIVE BOROUGHS Home to the Pratt Institute, bucolic Fort Greene Park, and a sprinkling of shops and restaurants, the charming neighborhoods of Fort Greene and Clinton Hill typify the handsome streets of Brownstone Brooklyn. They’re also adjacent to the Brooklyn Navy Yard, a former shipyard turned creative manufacturing hub and small-business incubator.

Brooklyn Stone and Tile

Rosie Li Studio

SOUR

In a historic brick warehouse in the Brooklyn Navy Yard, stone and ceramic fabricator Brooklyn Stone and Tile offers countertops, bathroom vanities, tile installation, and custom designs. With furniture makers, fashion designers, steel fabricators, and all manner of creatives, the Navy Yard is a community of makers.

This design studio and boutique lighting manufacturer founded by designer Rosie Li and engineer Philip Watkins forgoes traditional lamp design in favor of building systems driven by science and mathematics. The natural and pared-down forms of the practice’s lighting pieces are on display in a street-level showroom designed in collaboration with Office of Tangible Space.

Located in the Brooklyn Navy Yard, SOUR addresses social and urban problems through sustainable and inclusive methodologies. The hybrid design studio works in various domains—architectural, urban, product, and service design—to create data-inspired solutions that can sustain in the complex and volatile systems and environments we live in.
