EDITOR’S NOTE

"Kindness is like snow. It beautifies everything it covers.” –Kahlil Gibran 2023 is at an end and the world is still complicated and challenging but there are plenty of reasons to be grateful too. To hug a friend or loved one and to be hopeful. We hope you will enjoy our Best of 2023 issue and keep following our magazines in 2024 and beyond for new adventures and inspiring profiles. In the past year, our entrepreneurial publisher Chase Backer’s new Advanced Aesthetics MedSpa in Palm Beach continues to be a huge success, attracting Palm Beach’s best and brightest. Over five years ago I was invited into Chase’s exciting and demanding world of Metropolitan Magazine. A magazine that once boasted Teddy Roosevelt as its editor. Heady stuff. It’s been a blast and it just keeps getting better and better. The best staff, contributors and stakeholders, branding partners and strategic partners. “Adam, we were all put on this earth to create.” Chase recently shared with me and then Chase laughed and said, “ I want you to write “Don’t” on a piece of paper 10, 20, 30 times.” “Ok, I replied.” Then he told me to write the word… “Stop.” Point well made and advice I plan to keep following. Enjoy this special Best of 2023 Holiday Issue featuring the stars of YourHomeTV, including Super-mogul Kathy Ireland and iHEART Radio host Xen Sams, among other shining lights. Happy Holidays and thank you dear readers for providing us with the opportunity and honor to entertain, inform and delight you. Enjoy! Interview with
KATHY IRELAND By Adam Kluger
hat do you do to celebrate the season? Any long-standing family traditions? What’s it like in the Ireland household this time of year? K: Happy Holidays and Merry Christmas! In our family, we are blessed to have some wonderful annual traditions. Of course, we love decorating the Christmas tree and having our cherished family dinner where everyone makes something special. Sometimes we host at our home and other times we go to Mom’s, who will always be our angel and matriarch. One very special tradition in our family is that we love watching the sunrise on the beach … one of the benefits of living in sunny Santa Barbara, California! For us, Christmas is a time of great J-O-Y (an acronym we use for Jesus, Others, You) … and celebrating the greatest tradition of all - gratitude.
A: What projects and/or charities have you been especially involved with in 2023? K: 28 years ago, our company began hosting an annual event called kathy ireland Children’s Christmas Celebration with Elise Kim-Nelson, leader and cofounder of Athletes and Entertainers for Kids and 911 for Kids. Elise began these Christmas parties for children in need 37 years ago and continues celebrating with us today! These are wonderful events where we honor precious children who won’t have the privilege of experiencing a traditional Christmas due to home life circumstances or a lack of resources. The joy this program brings to these incredible children is truly a special gift for our team of volunteers each year. As International Youth Chair for the National Pediatric Cancer Foundation, raising awareness to the need for funding is always top of mind. Tragically, less than 4% of the billions of dollars raised
annually go toward treating childhood cancer, with less than 10 drugs having been developed for use in children with cancer since 1980. As a way to contribute funds to nonprofit initiatives, our team has developed a credit card processing company called ireland Pay, where 51% of our proceeds go directly toward supporting organizations such as the National Pediatric Cancer Foundation, to help fund their research and bring an end to childhood cancer. As a non-subscription based OTT channel, we are thrilled to see Your Home TV programs, content, sponsors and viewership grow at such an alarming rate. This platform provides an affordable opportunity for influencers, storytellers, film producers and podcasters to receive a higher streaming compensation, while retaining full ownership of their content. Our goal with this platform is to provide a space for family friendly content to be enjoyed. Now more than ever families are in need of positive, educational and uplifting content from a platform they can trust and that’s what we are providing at Your Home TV through the growing relationships we are building around that initiative. A: What’s the secret to your phenomenal business/branding successes? - you are one of the top brands in the world! 54 Metropolitan Magazine | metmagny.com
K: You are so kind … we still feel like a baby brand! There is so much we have yet to accomplish, however, in growth we have been exposed to needs so much greater than our own. Everyday we seek to “Teach, Inspire, Empower, Make Our World Better”, in business you must be bold and unwilling to fold to failure, yet you must also have boundaries in place, because they will be tested. Be intentional. If you don’t hear ‘no’ every day, you’re not trying hard enough! Always be ready and willing to pivot, diversify your ventures. Invest in people. Our team has won awards for inclusivity over the years. Every unique individual contributes in a powerful way. A: Any maxims or advice you can offer on additional best business practices? K: People over profits. How people are treated has always been at the forefront of our business. We have spent more money on our human rights contracts than any other company we are aware of. Consider others
as more important than yourself, this is key to building strong relationships. Keep integrity and your work ethics intact. So what if that means working a little harder? Honorable character is your best calling card and that’s something anyone can have! A: How do you stay in such amazing shape, look so beautiful and maintain such an active life and demanding career? K: Don’t see this shape as beautiful, though if you mean in the way that every human is, can accept that! Like many of us, there are times when weight gets out of control, which can have a great impact on heart health. Heart disease disproportionately affects women after the onset of menopause. There are many theories about that, including a belief that once menstruation ceases, there can be a greater buildup of iron in the body. Women die of heart disease less than men, until we reach a certain age … then we catch up. We may disagree on many points, though one thing am truly grateful
for is Barbra Streisand’s commitment to this initiative through her Women’s Heart Center at Cedars-Sinai, as well as her work for the Dream Foundation, which we helped develop from its inception. A: Any health/diet/exercise tips you could share? K: Hiking, cycling, swimming, surfing … can’t stand the word diet! Am a firm believer in portion control and fitness through activities you love! As a certified fitness instructor, there is a natural passion to advocate for healthy lifestyles for women and families, which is attainable for everyone through proper education. A: Any New resolutions?
Year’s
goals
or
K: Every year there are new challenges to battle and new dreams to realize. The current daily goal is to become closer in a growing relationship with Jesus Christ. Faith, family and then the business … everything else falls into place when those priorities are in order. It is with Him that each year begins and ends! A: What do you do for fun to relax or unwind?
K: There are too many to choose from, however, here are four favorite quotes from scripture that guide each day. Proverbs 3:5-6 “Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to Him and He will make your paths straight ” Joel 2:25 “And I will restore the years that the locust have eaten”
K: Love going to the beach with our children when they visit, surfing with Greg and friends, chasing after our four-legged loved ones in the sand! Spending time with those you love most is the best way to relax and unwind!
Luke 7:47 “The one who is forgiven much, loves much”
A: Favorite mantra, saying/words of advice?
“All that you give is all that you get, so give it all you’ve got!”
2 Timothy 1:7 “For God gave us a spirit not of fear, but of power and love and self control”

Who is Xen Sams? I am a live iHeartRadio and TV personality in the tri-state area. My show "A Moment Of Xen " is on iHeartRadio and goes live Saturday nights from 9 to 10 PM on 710 WOR, a 100-yearold radio station known as the voice of New York. I cover everything from film, fashion, pop, culture, cryptocurrency, cannabis, and health from the millennial moms perspective. I have been on air at iHeart for 4 years. We are considered 'experts on the mic' and interview experts, celebrities, VIPs, and Alpha level management across major corporations. How do you balance everything as a mom, wife, IHEART radio host, actress, philanthropist, and business visionary? Finding the balance is the hardest part. It’s all about time management, discipline, and consistency. Setting priorities straight is key.
My priority is balancing family and work and making sure everyone is happy. I do everything with passion and give the best version of myself to every situation. I always focus on maintaining a balance between my work, kids, and husband. I find that weekends are a great opportunity to catch up on quality family time. You not only have brought your show A Moment of Xen to the iHeart platform but to Your Home TV as well. Why is Your Home TV such a special community? Why do you think tens of millions of viewers are loving the platform and its family-friendly content? Your home TV is an incredible platform. It's free programming and available 24 /7. Kathy Ireland is the world's #14th most powerful brand. This is one of her latest endeavors, with nearly 40 channel partners on the platform. time is because of Your Home TV's proprietary business model. It's filled with family friendly content that streams 24/7 and services many households internationally. Our show is one of the top-rated shows on the platform; we trend extremely well in the 'Endutainment' format. Any health/beauty tips you can share with out readers? Due to a trip and fall accident in 2012, I now have metal in my face. I have a metal plate under my orbital and screws down my nasal passage due to a maxillofacial fracture. Even though I did not need plastic surgery, I did have surgery done internally through my pallet. I suffered for one year and it took me a while to bounce back. I resort to cannabis therapy for facial twitches, and am extremely passionate about medicinal cannabis as it has anti-inflammatory properties and incredible mental health benefits. I'm also completely obsessed with a new beauty product called CO2 lift. It's non-invasive and the most incredible aesthetic monotherapy you will ever treat your face with. It's carbon dioxide
therapy for the skin, noninvasive, and totally rejuvenating. That's my secret. What’s going on with your acting career? My acting career is still very much active. The latest film I am starring in is called ‘Tin Soldier’, featuring Jamie Foxx, Rita Ora, Scott Eastwood and Robert De Niro. It will be out in six months. Any new sponsors or advertisers you are excited about - how do you select which brands you want to work with? I work with so many sponsors and brands. Currently, we have "Hydration with Hart" segment by onceuponacoconut.com, the "Going Deep" segment by co2lift.com, "America's Favorite Pharmacist" with Phil Cowley (@philsmypharmacist), and "Discover Your Potential" with Anna Devere and Dan Gilman. We also have seasonal sponsors and advertisers we work directly with. Any future goals or projects in 2024? We will be nationally syndicated by Q3 of 2024! Very exciting stuff.

Why is NYC so magical around the holidays? There's no better place to be than New York City during the holidays. Fifth Avenue is decorated with the most incredible visual displays of the Christmas season. Bloomingdale's, Saks Fifth Avenue, Macy's, and Rockefeller Center have beautiful window displays that are all worth seeing. The hustle and bustle of the Christmas traffic is exhilarating. Radio city is always spectacular and the observation deck at 30 Roc is phenomenal.
My yearly tradition is always partaking in the Rockefeller Center tree lighting . My birthday happens to be November 29th making it a very special time of year. COWBOYS
TRAILERS AND RANCHES
Jimmy, tell us a little bit about yourself. I was pretty much born a cowboy. I showed cattle growing up, rodeo’d while serving in the Air Force, worked on ranches, modeled western fashion, and couldn’t be happier than in the saddle working cattle. What was the inspiration for your new show, Cowboys, Trailers, and Ranches? I wanted to celebrate and showcase the real Western industry and culture. There are so many stories that go untold and I wanted to change that. Everyone loves Yellowstone and I wanted to highlight the real-life version of that.
What is the perfect Saturday night for you? Two-stepping with my wife, Vanessa, a nice fire in the fire pit, and a bottle of Orin Swift wine (yes, cowboys drink wine!) or Pendleton Whisky. What are you most proud of when it comes to business? My wife, Vanessa Nunez, and I are building a legacy. With our real estate company, Ranch Texas, this show and more projects in the works, we are scaling our business with integrity and grit. We walk and talk the western lifestyle in everything we do and we aren’t stopping anytime soon!
What's one thing we'd never guess about you? My passion is preserving the western culture but I also love the island vibe...that's why they call me the island cowboy! CHART-TOPPER
PETER CINCOTTI
IS A KILLER ON THE KEYS AT CAFE CARLYLE By Adam Kluger beautiful day in Manhattan got even better when I was invited for espressos by my dear friend and NYC's best barber, Enrique Peralta, who is a neighborhood celebrity in his own right and the only place to go if you are anybody, for the best haircut in town. Enrique wanted to introduce me to his old friend, Peter Cincotti who will soon be tickling the ivories in October at the famed Cafe Carlyle. Peter, a piano prodigy, who turned the music world on fire with his first album that shot straight up to #1 on the Billboard Jazz charts, is probably the nicest and coolest music star you could ever meet. A: Enrique, how long have you known Peter? E: Has to be thirty years P: He's the neighborhood legend. There's no place like York Barber anymore or Enrique A: Enrique loves to play Tony Bennett and Sinatra while cutting hair and I bet he plays a lot of your music as well. E: So much P: Enrique keeps my music on rotation. A: Are you excited about performing at Cafe Carlyle from October 3rd through the 7th? P: I'm very excited I love playing the Carlyle, there is no place like it! The hotel has so much history and the Cafe is one of my favorite places to play. I grew up in the city playing clubs, one of which was the old Oak Room at
the Algonquin Hotel, known for Dorothy Parker and the Round Table. And now the Carlyle is the last man standing for that intimate, New York type of night, where you can actually put on a show, have a martini, eat, and be in a very special universe that you can't find anymore. A: Do you know the setlist yet? P: I'll do a bunch of songs from all my albums and focus on my new album which is called "Killer on the Keys" which honors piano players from all different generations from Nat King Cole to Billy Joel to Scott Joplin to Lady Gaga. I can take all these different musical artists and put them in a blender, along with some of my original songs. A: I love that you shot your "Killer on the Keys" music video in Washington Square Park. Why are your devoted fans going to be excited about your latest album? P: I've never really taken all those piano players that have influenced me and kind of honored them in this way before. You don't normally hear Oscar Peterson and Elton John in a sentence or Erroll Garner and John Lennon. My past records have been pretty diverse but this album kind of ties it all together. This also marks the 20th anniversary of my first record, so it's kind of full circle. A: What was it like to chart a #1 Billboard jazz album right out of the gate? P: I spent my whole life practicing hours and
hours at clubs and clubs but at the same time it did feel somewhat overnight. The attention that it got felt sudden although it wasn't as sudden as it was in the making for 20 years. I have been working on my music since I was three years old. I was at Columbia University at the time when I began touring, so, I had to shift to a music career and go on the road and travel and that's what I did. Music connects everybody and music is the universal language and you learn so much from touring and seeing the world. I remember in Japan on my first tour right around that time, I thought the audience hated the show because the way they received music in Japan was very different. It was very even-keel applause until the end... then they never seemed to stop applauding ... so they got three encores that night (laugh). That exposure to different cultures had a huge effect on my music and me. A: Enrique, when you get a celebrity in your barber chair like Peter Cincotti, is there a lot of pressure to deliver the perfect haircut every time? E: No pressure at all. (laugh) P: For the first album, 20 years ago, I got so many amazing comments about my hair, and Enrique is in the booklet if you look in the booklet. He was a big part of my visual look on that first album. Enrique and York Barbershop has been a pillar of this neighborhood for over 40 years. It has a familial feel of old New York, timeless, classic New York that is hard to find now.

Taylor Swift
is the Hottest Music Act of the Summer By Arianna Steadman
hether or not you like Taylor Swift, her music is impossible to ignore. Swift has been making waves since her debut album, Taylor Swift, went platinum when she was only 15. She’s tied for winning the most Grammys for Album of the Year, and has had nine songs top the Billboard Hot 100. Most recently, Swift has been touring across the country for her popular Eras Tour, which will continue internationally later in the summer. Her set list promotes her newest album, Midnights, but Swift also performs beloved songs from her previous “eras”, tailoring her show to the city she performs 78 Metropolitan Magazine | metmagny.com
in. Fans of Taylor Swift are incredibly excited about the Eras Tour, as it is her first tour postpandemic. According to the New York Times, 3.5 billion people attempted to access the Ticketmaster website to buy tickets on their first day of public sales. Ticketmaster could not handle this insanely high demand and canceled the sale, leading to resale tickets being offered for up to $1400. Despite the difficulties, more than two million tickets were still sold on the opening day of sales, the most any artist has ever sold in one day, according to CNN. However, getting Eras tickets was only half of the struggle — actually commuting to the venue became
almost impossible in some cases, as tickets for the MBTA commuter rail to Swift’s Boston concert sold out in hours. Clearly, seeing Swift perform is the opportunity of a lifetime. Taylor Swift is undeniably an icon. Just what, exactly, makes her so popular?
THERE ARE THREE KEY ELEMENTS TO HER SUCCESS: HER MUSIC, HER CELEBRITY PERSONA, AND HER RELATABILITY.
FEARLESS SPEAK NOW RED REPUTATION MIDNIGHTS Taylor Swift’s music is catchy. We’ve all heard it on the radio for the past two decades, and despite the changes in genre from country to pop to alternative rock, her

voice is clear and recognizable. It is not only the heartwarming guitar strumming from Fearless and the head bopping beat from 1989 that make her music so beloved, but also her song lyrics. Every Swift song is a story with a resonating message, which ranges from the sweet Romeo and Juliet style romance of “Love Story” to “Miss Americana and the Heartbreak Prince”, which Swift stated is “about disillusionment with our crazy world of politics and inequality, set in a metaphorical high school.” You might be skeptical of the effect of lyrics on a song’s popularity, but lyrics are instrumental in allowing the listener to connect with the world a song creates. For example, “All Too Well (10 Minute Version)”, is largely verse, with very few background instruments and only Swift’s voice for backing vocals. Despite the relatively simple musical outline,
Taylor Swift’s career has lasted for almost twenty years, and yet she has never faded from the public eye. One reason for this success is her consistent production of music, usually one album release every two years. However, each album marks a shift into a new genre, and Swift constantly reinvents her image along with it. In her early country music albums Taylor Swift and Fearless, Swift sings with a Southern drawl and presents herself as an innocent, sundress-wearing teen, which is reflected in her songs about first love and heartbreak. However, as Swift made the transition into pop and rock with her albums Red and 1989, she dropped her accent and began dressing in flamboyant outfits that echoed the glitter of the ‘80s, channeling the look of a true pop star. Swift’s more recent albums, Folklore and Evermore, explore an indie-folk and alternative rock style, and her muted pastel aesthetic matches the December 2023

quiet and thoughtful tone of the music. With each reinvention of her artistic style and presentation, Swift’s fanbase grows larger and more dedicated. Swift is able to draw attention to her music by creating new content, but more importantly she is able to keep the attention by making such radical shifts and consistently doing it fabulously. Taylor Swift is not the only artist who can write beautiful lyrics and change up her style – but she is one of the few artists who is incredibly open about her personal life. In her 2020 documentary Miss Americana, Swift shares her difficult journey with body dysmorphia and eating disorders, and the intense pressure that she felt from the media. This vulnerability allows Swift to be seen as herself, rather than as an unreachable star. Swift’s openness allows her fanbase to connect with her more easily, and the millions of women that comprise it can
likely relate to her past experience with sexual assault and the struggles of being female in a patriarchal world. However, Swift’s songs can touch anyone’s heart with their messages of self worth and the excitement of love. Swift is also very public about her romantic history, which can be traced back to her teenage years, and she often writes songs about her past relationships. There is no topic too sensitive, as she sings about her onagain-off-again relationship with Jake Gyllenhaal in “We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together” and the power imbalance of a large age gap in “Dear John”, referencing her relationship with John Mayer. Mayer felt humiliated by the song, saying in an interview with the Rolling Stones that: “I didn’t deserve it. I’m pretty good at taking accountability now, and I never did anything to deserve that. It was a really lousy thing for her to do.”

Making it Home By Teresa Strasser
T
eresa Strasser’s new book, Making it Home – Life Lessons from a Season of Little League, is a bittersweet memoir that reads like narrative fiction. Using baseball as a backdrop, Strasser weaves a tale of dysfunctional parenting, family dynamics, grief, acceptance and redemption. Peppered with humor and searing insights, the book centers on the untimely death of Strasser’s brother, Morgan, who died from spinal cancer in 2016. His death caused an aftershock that threatened the tenuous relationship between Strasser and her dad, who she describes as a “cantankerous auto mechanic.”
Little did Strasser or her dad know a profound and lasting healing would unfold when Strasser’s son began playing little league at Ingleside four years ago. While she and her dad sat behind the first line, they found themselves in what Strasser describes as “a foxhole of two.” They bonded over the game as they talked, laughed, and rooted for the same team. “We processed our grief and our grudges. The experience was a way home for us,” she said." Listen to it, or read it here: https://geni.us/MakingItHomeBook

ADAM KLUGER PUBLIC RELATIONS
Celebrates Twenty Years of Excellence, Creativity & Integrity
O
n November 23rd, 2003 Adam Kluger Public Relations launched into unchartered waters with a 300+ person party at Planet Hollywood in Times Square, featuring 6 live bands, costumed characters from Troma films and a mermaid (actress Maria Setaro) wearing a $10,000 rubber tail flown in from Northern California just for the event. AKPR was originally known as Bonehead Public Relations and the name was a perfect fit for a rag-tag bunch who thought outside the box and looked at running a PR firm as part performance art and part intuition. For about a year prior, I had gone back and forth from freelancing as a television writer producer (Fox5NY, MSNBC, E! News) and trying my hand as an independent publicist. One of my first clients in 2002 was a highschool pal who wrote a novelty book called "The Guide to Picking Up Girls" After helping promote the book over the course of a few months, the book peaked on the Amazon Best-Seller list at #77. That was after a second Howard Stern Radio Show appearance and after Jay Leno's producer saw some funny late night commecials we had written/cast and produced for the Guide that Jay featured on The Tonight Show. Publicity didn't seem that hard. Even kind of creative and fun. The motto then was "Excellence, Creativity & Integrity." Along the way, we have all been blessed to have developed trusted friendships and life-long relationships that we will always cherish. Here's an old article on AKPR written by New York Times reporter Diana Greenberg...so honored and grateful that all the folks mentioned in this interview are still dear friends and a big part of our inner circle. Thank you all so much! -AK 98 25A Magazine | metmagny.com 94 Metropolitan Magazine | metmagny.com

He was eager to see himself on the evening news. “I guess I should have realized then that I would either become a garbage man or work in TV,” he joked in a recent interview in which he talked about the 12 year odyssey of his Manhattan based public relations firm that bears his name (www.adamklugerpr.com) (also known as AKPR). He opened AKPR in November 2003. Mr. Kluger had more than a decade of media experience before he took on the challenge of running a PR firm. After earning a liberal arts degree from Vassar College, he spent ten years as a writer and producer for CNN. He was also an independent and contract producer for a couple of years, working for major television stations, such as Fox5 , MSNBC and E! News. He revealed that his interest in public relations as a career came to him through a serendipitous encounter. “A former classmate wrote a self-published book and asked me to help publicize it,” he explained. “I was able to get him 30 placements, including an appearance on “The Tonight Show with Jay Leno.” That success led Mr. Kluger to begin his new career. After hosting a party with six bands at Planet Hollywood at Times Square to launch his new
The motto then was "Excellence, Creativity & Integrity." Along the way, we have all been blessed to have developed trusted friendships and life-long relationships that we will always cherish. firm with the assistance of lighting guru, friend and future client, Bentley Meeker (www.bentleymeeker.com), he got down to business. He surrounded himself with talented leaders who he employs on a contract basis. “We have a rotating staff of about 15 people ranging from senior publicists to interns, depending on my current clients’ needs,” he said. “Our award-winning senior PR Team led by Mark Goldman and Robyn Stevens is among the best in the business–They are efficient, accountable, loyal and they somehow manage to make me look smart every day.” “They honor me daily with their friendship and trust and I am devoted to all of them as on-going strategic business partners.” With his fluctuating staff, Mr. Kluger has provided multi-dimensional, individualized public relations services for more than 100 clients, averaging about five to 15 clients at a time. His services include a full range of solutions: traditional and social media placements, managing corporate reputation and strategic communications, event management, web design and search engine optimization, and media branding campaigns resulting in improved market share and big bottom-line results.
With a relatively small client base, AKPR is able to give each client maximum time and attention. “My fees are at the boutique PR firm level, but our results are on par or better than larger firms,” Mr. Kluger said. He credits his clients and several mentors for helping him to learn the “art and science” of public relations, as well as the ins and outs of running a small business. Mr. Kluger is thankful for many business mentors, including his client, Brian Drum, CEO of Drum Associates, an executive search firm (www.drumassociates.com), and Jay Levy, a business development advisor who was a recipient of Crain’s New York Business Top Five Entrepreneurs to Watch in New York. (www.uproot. com) AKPR has provided services for a large variety of clients, from authors, top doctors and CEOs to small and medium-sized businesses. Mr. Kluger is particularly pleased to work with Brain Balance Achievement Centers, which offers a program to help children with ADD/ADHD, dyslexia, or Asperger’s syndrome to overcome behavioral and learning difficulties. The centers have grown in number from five to over 60 with Mr. Kluger’s help. “I am especially devoted to my clients who make the world a better place,” he said. February2023 2023 December

One of AKPR’s first clients, Subin Associates, LLP, a personal injury law firm (www.subinlaw.com), has stuck with AKPR through the years as the recipient of abundant media placements. “Adam Kluger Public Relations got us more press coverage in a week than my firm has gotten in 20 years,” said Herb Subin, Esq. He added that Mr. Kluger is a ”pleasure to work with, has great insight, and is a real gentleman.”
discovered how to manage and get through the storms.” Kluger adds, “if it wasn’t for my family and good friends having my back during the tough times–I never would have made it this far or for this long.”
Bill Tush, who worked with Mr. Kluger at CNN but is now retired and works as a freelance entertainment journalist, also has been a client with AKPR since the firm’s beginning. “Adam keeps my name out there,” he said. “Sometimes I’ll do four of five media interviews in a row. We’re friends and sometimes I’ll call Adam on Sunday just to say hello, and he’ll start thinking of places to pitch.” PopCap, maker of video games, has been a “huge client” in terms of revenue. AKPR recently pulled out all the stops for the company, with a major broadcast tour, satellite radio tour, and celebrity Twitter campaign. (www.popcapgames.com)
“One rule in our office is that we treat each other with kindness and respect,” Mr. Kluger said. He also allows his young internal staff to be independent and work the way they see fit. He joked, “Everyone is their own boss, and I’m their assistant.” On a more serious note he said, “The secret to being a good leader is to be a good role model, to care about people, and to help them realize their potential and achieve their goals.” Lauren Shepland, who worked at AKPR as a publicist and office manager for about a year while she was a student at Sacred Heart University, said she has Mr. Kluger to thank for her landing a “fantastic job” at Bridgewater Associates, the world’s largest hedge fund, upon her graduation. “Working for Adam was a great experience,” she said. “I learned about the tools and work skills I needed for a PR position.”
Mr. Kluger defines success for his clients as “achieving their goals” – whether they are media placement, web design, branding, or any mix of PR objectives. He affirmed that the most important measure of success is getting big bottom-line results. He is more philosophical about his own success. He said, “It has been a challenge to keep the business going, especially during the recession.” He offered an analogy: “My team and I have been in the eye of the hurricane, but we’ve been in a lifeboat where everyone is equal, and we’ve
Currently an event manager at a popular hotel, Karina Mkrtchian said she “learned everything about public relations from working at AKPR,” adding, “Adam would say, ‘I’m here to help you find and release your inner greatness.’ I always thought that sounded kind of cheesy, but I realized he was absolutely right. Adam helped me discover what I was good at and use it to the best of my abilities.” That was also true for Bernadette Marciniak, who started working at AKPR as an intern when she was a student at Montclair State

University, eventually becoming a publicist handling social media, design work, and photography. She said Mr. Kluger noticed that she had artistic talent and helped her to develop it. She went on to work as a photographer for North Jersey Media Group, owner of the Bergen Record, but she still works for AKPR as a freelance photographer and publicist. “ “I’m really proud of all the members of our inner-circle over the past 12 years– Millenials may lack experience– but they are also tech-savvy super-stars, who are smart and tough. I like to be surrounded by young people who are unafraid to take risks, to develop new skills and offer a fresh perspective. That ethos has always been vital to who we are as a company.” Mr. Kluger also gave some thought to his own job satisfaction. “Like journalists, public relations practitioners usually work on a deadline, and every day is different. You find structure out of chaos, and you tell a story, solve a problem. There is a feeling of pride in that. Then the next day is new again, and you’re challenged again, meeting new people, solving new problems.” “Ultimately, it’s my job to help people–and nothing beats that.” Mr. Kluger would not give any definite predictions about the future of his company, but he said, “I hope that if my sevenyear-old son Robbie reads this article in the future he will know I believe that my greatest accomplishment is being his Dad.” Asked if he would like Robbie to choose public relations as a career, Mr. Kluger replied, “I want him to be happy, to do something worthwhile, and to share his talents and joy with the world. I want his motivation to be love. The reason anything is worth doing is because of love.” To learn more visit: www.adamklugerpr.com Adam Kluger PR – Public Relations Firm New York City February 2023 December 2023

ow did you get into Golf?
There were several factors that led me to venture into the world of golf. Firstly, my mother, residing in Korea, has an immense passion for the sport and often expressed her enthusiasm during our conversations. Recognizing that there was a disconnect that stemmed from my lack of interest and knowledge of golf, I was motivated to explore the world of golf. Additionally, I noticed a rising surge of interest in golf within the social media community, particularly with a lack of female representation. I identified an opportunity to fill this void and contribute to the golf social media sphere. I then took my platform to create Golf with Mi. I contacted OFTV and managed to pitch an idea for a show that was about real conversations while golfing. I host, produce and edit my show. I have creative control and it's extremely empowering. What’s the secret to improving your golf game? Dedicated practice, consistent recording, professional lessons, and engaging in rounds with other golfers are essential components. As a model, actress and influencer, how important is your diet & exercise routine? As a model, actress, and influencer, maintaining a balanced diet and regular exercise routine holds immense importance in my life. Prioritizing my overall health and well-being serves as a fundamental pillar, enabling me to navigate the demands of my profession and achieve optimal performance. By prioritizing self-care and focusing on a healthy lifestyle, I 98 Metropolitan Magazine | metmagny.com

audience preferences are crucial elements. By consistently striving to innovate and provide diverse content that resonates with followers, influencers can cultivate engagement, authenticity, and sustained interest among their audience.
I appreciate the compliment, but I believe that every woman should strive to feel confident in her own body, embracing her unique beauty. In terms of workout tips, I would suggest prioritizing consistency in your exercise routine, finding a supportive workout partner for motivation and accountability, and ultimately integrating fitness into your lifestyle as a long-term commitment to your health and well-being.

What’s the secret to being an effective influencer?
We’ve featured international health influencer Jen Selter on a previous magazine cover - and the interest was off the charts… why do you think Jen has become such a huge star in the fitness industry?
While I believe that there is no one-size-fits-all formula for being an effective influencer, I have found that continuous creativity, meaningful collaborations, and a keen understanding of
I am excited to announce that I have been granted the incredible opportunity to open for San Diego Swim Week, which is a project I am truly looking forward to. This upcoming event holds great significance for me, and I am eagerly anticipating the memorable moments that will unfold.
Jen Selter has garnered significant acclaim in the fitness industry due to her pioneering approach of sharing her fitness routines and showcasing her physical progress, particularly focusing on her booty. As one of the early adopters of leveraging social media as a freelance creative, she successfully paved the way for the millennial generation, establishing a loyal following. Her authenticity, dedication, and relatability have played a pivotal role in propelling her to become a prominent figure and a source of inspiration for fitness enthusiasts worldwide. Are any other fun hobbies besides golf and working out? In my spare time, I indulge in the creative pursuits of cooking and artistic expression (drawing/ painting/interior decorating). These hobbies offer a delightful balance to my golfing and workout routines, enriching my life with diverse forms of enjoyment and personal fulfillment. Tell us a little more about your acting and modeling career. My journey in the realms of acting and modeling started at the age of 14 when I signed representation with a traditional modeling agency. Over the years, I have dedicated myself to honing my skills through acting classes and have had the privilege of being featured in various magazines, print campaigns, commercials and movies. Presently, I have attained a significant milestone by creating a role in my own production golf show, allowing me to showcase the fruits of my labor and take charge of my career trajectory. Our publisher, Chase Backer, just opened a MedSpa in Palm Beach that specializes in regenerative stem-cell therapy for athletic injuries - any thoughts on stem-cell therapy to heal sports injuries? I hold a strong belief in the potential of stem cell therapy as a means to facilitate the healing process for sports injuries, as well as various other health-related conditions. I have witnessed firsthand the positive experiences of athlete friends who have chosen this natural approach over invasive surgeries, and their testimonials have reinforced my support for this innovative form of medical treatment. The regenerative properties of stem cell therapy offer promising avenues for optimizing recovery and promoting overall wellbeing in athletes and individuals alike.

LEGENDARY INSTRUCTOR
GARY WIREN KNOWS HOW TO HELP YOUR GOLF GAME By Adam Kluger
r. Gary Wiren is a PGA Master Professional who was the Director of Education, Learning, and Research for the PGA of America between 1972 and 1985. During that time he produced the entitled "Laws, Principles, and Preferences" of the golf swing. He is the founder of four golf schools and is now the senior director of instruction for Trump Golf Properties. Wiren is a member of both the PGA Hall of Fame and the World Golf Teachers' Hall of Fame. As an author, he has written fourteen golf books including The PGA Teaching Manual, at 619 pages, which is the most comprehensive text on golf instruction in history. It is estimated that over his career he has taught more than a quarter-million students in 30 countries. As one of the world's leading golf experts, Wiren has written more than 300 articles for magazines and other periodicals. Learning about his teaching and writing skills, he was asked the following questions. What’s the Biggest Challenge in Teaching Golf? The biggest challenge is to get a clear understanding as to why the pupil plays or wants to play golf, and then work out a program that will direct them toward success. That will include the amount of time and effort they are willing to contribute toward their goal.

Who are some of your favorite professional golfers?
Why do you think so many U.S. Presidents love golf? First of all, with the presidency being such an extremely stressful job the chance to get out on peaceful lawns to engage in an activity that is not too mentally taxing can be therapeutic. It can help one temporarily forget all the demands that come with the position. And since it is an activity that is easy for the Secret Service to handle, they like it too. Have you played golf with former President Trump? Yes, most of it was a few years ago. In my estimation, he is the best golfing president we have ever had. I definitely mean that. He loves to compete and returns scores that would be pleasing to a low single-handicap golfer…such as a two or three-handicapper. At his age, he is still playing quite well while using a rotary swing which produces some long drives. Of course, he has some bad days as we all do but his name is up on several championship plaques that line the hallway at the beautiful but tough Trump International Golf Club. He is a very good putter and loves the game.
As a golf historian, I could go far back and note some great champion golfers, who were also great people Throughout history they seem to have occurred in groups of three, known as a triumvirate. For example, Vardon, Braid, and Taylor; Jones, Sarazen, and Hagen; Snead, Hogan, and Nelson; and the last with which you are more familiar-- Palmer, Player, and Nicklaus. Thinking about your readers I feel they would like to hear more about champions who are familiar to them. “Arnie” brought life back to the game of golf with not only his game but his manner. He may have signed more golf items than anyone in history and always with clear penmanship, not a scribble, so you were darned sure who signed it. Gary Player gave hope to the smaller golfer by producing “Tour level” length that was a result of his great commitment to daily fitness training. But when you say “Jack” when discussing golf there is only one Jack who won more majors than anyone in history— eighteen--and that of course is Jack Nicklaus. He also had an amazing 19 runner-up finishes in the majors. Just imagine that! In addition to his golf prowess Jack and his wife Barbara may have contributed more to charity fundraising efforts for children in need of hospital care than any athlete in history. These three men have made it a privilege for me to be involved in the game of golf.
We at Metropolitan Palm Beach Magazine were very honored that Jack and Barbara Nicklaus appeared on a previous cover. When you play golf with a legend do you teach them or do they teach you? Frankly, I don’t play golf with a lot of legends. Yes, I have played with Arnie, Gary, Byron Nelson, Sam Snead, and others that are not part of the “Great Triumvirates,” but the play was always just for each other’s enjoyment. There was an occasion, however, when teeing it up with a PGA Golf Hall of Famer and long drive champion, Melvin “Chick” Harbert, that I was offered some advice. It was a tip for playing in the wind. The two of us were at Jupiter Hills CC in Jupiter, FL, on a very windy day. We had reached the 17th tee where there was a bit of a wait with a foursome ahead of us. “Chick,” said, “Would you like a tip for hitting a drive on a windy day?” I certainly wouldn’t pass up on a tip from a “Hall of Famer” so said, “Yes, of
course.” He took his stance and with his driver aiming in one direction said, “When playing into the wind just get comfortable and try to make your very best swing.” Then he reversed his direction and taking his stance said “Now, when you are playing downwind, just get comfortable and try to make your very best swing.” So you see, you can pick up some really solid fundamentals from great players even without asking. Are there some key tips you would like to share with our readers that could help improve their game? A tip I share with my students that helps a lot of them once they understand and employ it is this: “YOUR JOB IS NOT WHAT YOU THINK IT IS.” You think that as a golfer your job is to hit the ball. That’s not your job! That is the club’s job. Your job is to SWING IT! Let the club hit the ball. I try to teach a “swinging hit” not a
“hitting swing.” I want speed. A “hitting” action tends to produce tension which kills speed and also introduces poor direction. But making a “swinging hit”, with less tension, produces speed that isn’t ruining your direction the way tension does. Practice making a “whoosh,” feeling almost as though you are going to throw the club with the left arm while using rotary speed from the hips to help produce velocity. With the back of the left hand flat the right hand is still slightly cocked and can now be released and rotated without losing speed prior to striking the ball. Think THROUGH THE BALL, NOT TO THE BALL. I speak from experience on this one as at age 47 I won the South Florida Long Drive Championship with a “smash” of 381 yds.1 ft. against a field of 51 other contestants. What added some shock to those who discovered it is that my drive won by 50 yds. over the second place of 330 yds. and I did it with a wooden-headed driver! (That was forty years ago before metal heads appeared.)

25A Mine was the first shot of the event, so before I swung I said to myself, “Don’t try to hit it too hard. Just make your BEST SWING.” How important is it to have a good routine? Speaking of “having a good routine” as just a tip is totally disrespecting its value. A routine is highly important in producing consistency which is one of golf’s great challenges. Developing a pre-shot routine is not a tip--it is a necessity for producing a higher number of good shots. Basically, the routine is composed of what to do and in what order to do it. Here is my pre-shot routine for a full swing. 1. Stand behind the ball to establish the line on which you want the ball to travel to be successful. In my mind, I then visually draw on the ground an easy-to-see orange line from the target to my ball. 2. After that I get into my address position and set my grip for the type of shot I want. 3. Then address the ball to locate the proper distance away, and while doing so I set my shoulders parallel to the line on which I am
102 Metropolitan Magazine | metmagny.com
going to swing. Next, I cock my wrists until the club is parallel to the ground with the toe of the club pointing up and my left wrist flat so the face is square. That is going to be my clubface position through the whole swing until after contact. I start my weight shift and the rotation of my hips as my arms drop with my right elbow almost touching my right hip (making the swing come from the inside). Finally, I have a visual target about one foot past the ball to help my speed through the ball and avoid releasing too early. You can place a tee or some other marker out there to focus on so that you will consistently hit through the ball, not to the ball. Any visualization tips? In one phrase I can summarize this skill: Picture good results. The body doesn’t lie for the brain. Let me give you the greatest example that I can think of. Question: Who has the most holes-in-one in golfing history? Answer: Texas club professional Mancel Davis has had 51 in his career. WHAT? FIFTY-ONE! How is that possible when no player, major champion or not, is even close? Well, the answer is that Mancel used his own little trick, the only possible explanation for how it was accomplished. Every time he came to a par three hole he pictured the ball going into the cup. That is called positive visualization. But what one should understand is that this tip is useable for more than just holes-in-one. Here is an example of that. I was doing a junior clinic at the Country Club of Jackson in Mississippi several years ago. To finish off the event I was to go along with the head professional and an assistant to give a three-hole demonstration. The second hole of the demo was an attractive 157-yard par three, and I was to hit first. Selecting a #7 iron I described through my microphone what I pictured. “Ladies and Gentlemen and you great juniors here is a good opportunity to picture your shot being successful. Can you feel a little breeze blowing from the right? It tells me I am going to need to start my shot not at the flag but about five yards to the right and let the wind bring it in.” I then aimed where I said, made a confident swing, saw the ball start exactly where I had aimed, and then watched the wind push it toward the flagstick and right into the cup. It was a good way to make one’s point.
What about putting? There is golf, and then there is putting. Of course that is part of the game but it is so different mechanically from what the game asks us to do when not on the green. How important is it? Well, the first golf pro ever to write a book on golf was Willie Park, Jr., of Scotland. He won THE OPEN CHAMPIONSHIP twice while his father won it four times. The title of Willie’s book was THE GAME OF GOLF, written in 1897. In that book is Willie’s quote, “The man who can putt is a match for anyone” (Of course that goes for women as well.). There certainly is no “one way to putt.” A player’s grip for example can be one of many very different choices. But the one element that tends to be universal (with few exceptions) is to keep the hands quiet. It is a stroke, not a hit. We have finished the 18th hole and Gary invites you to his INSTAGRAM to enjoy a trip through history by a visit to his incredible golf collection which has been visited by his hometown Omaha friend Warren Buffett. Having played the game for 77 years Gary wants me to close this piece by having you recognize golf’s greatest gift-- FRIENDSHIP.
