PUBLISHER’S NOTE

Welcome to our March 2017 issue. I’m pleased to present another issue full of stunning stories about fascinating people, places and happenings throughout the Greater New York City area. First stop: New York Fashion Week. February always sweeps the city with glamour and excitement. The City that Never Sleeps emerges from the wind and snow, sparkling with some of the most creative and well-heeled people on earth. Brilliant designers, visionary producers and exquisite models take over not just the ever-stylish neighborhoods of Chelsea and SoHo, but all of the Big Apple. In this issue, we take you right to the runway for the most sumptuous looks. These imaginative designs remind us that New York truly is the city of dreams. But it’s not just the fashion industry’s biggest players who are dreaming big and living large in New York. Television journalist Ainsley Earhardt of Fox & Friends relishes the city, as well. For her, Manhattan represents everything she wanted as a little girl growing up in South Carolina. Thanks to grit and determination, Earhardt has become a true New Yorker and an on-air personality beloved across America. That’s why I’m thrilled that we could feature her in this issue’s cover story. She embodies some of the values I admire most: hard work, humility and class. But as wonderful as Earhardt is, this issue has so much more to offer. Start reading to see what else we have to bring you in luxury living in the greatest city in the world. We hope you enjoy learning about these local treasures. I am also pleased to announce that we will be launching a new magazine for Palm Beach soon. Stay tuned for details on the new title and all of its splendor later this spring. As always, thank you for your continued love and support.

MARCELO CALABRESE Designer of “Slow Fashion” By Alexandra Appino-Tabone

M

arcelo Calabrese is not your typical designer. His bags were featured at the Academy Awards in Los Angeles last year, and when asked to describe his collection in two words, his response was “classy and crazy.” One look at Calabrese’s Art Deco-inspired accessories—structured pieces with a touch of whimsy— and it becomes apparent that they’re anything but cookie-cutter. On the contrary: Calabrese’s collection is entirely handmade, and details are altered slightly so that no two pieces are exactly alike. It’s “slow fashion,” as he calls it, and it comes from the belief that his designs should reflect the unique character of the person wearing it. Born in Argentina, Calabrese first wanted to study architecture, but realized his affinity for fashion when he discovered a clothing store in Buenos Aires and began selling their designs as a representative for his city. From there,

48

| MetropolitanMagazineNY.com | 25Amagazine.com

he started his own clothing company and traveled throughout Europe and Asia, finding inspiration from every culture he encountered. He then studied design at FIT in New York, where he lived for ten years. He worked with stores like Bergdorf Goodman and Barneys, and fell in love with the city, fascinated with New Yorkers and their love for European clothing. Calabrese’s fashion philosophy is simple: Each person is unique, and what they wear should complement who they are. He believes that his pieces gain additional value when paired with the right owner. “I love to know who is going to use my bag,” he says. For Calabrese, fashion is about more than wearing trendy pieces. He admits that a Chanel bag, while beautiful, isn’t right for everyone—that his designs may work for some people and not others. The “slow fashion” concept involves a much more personal exchange of energies resulting in a piece that never goes out

fashion

of style and will last a lifetime. He chooses to create only limited-edition pieces, crafting about ten of each design and no more, refusing to sell anything he hasn’t worked on with his own two hands. “I do limited editions because I don’t want uniforms, he says. "Sometimes I make just oneof-a-kind, but sometimes it’s a few pieces. But even then I try to change colors or change some details to make it different—even if it’s the same style, some detail is different.”

50

dance that’s “not too simple and not too much.” For Calabrese, “New York expresses Art Deco [architecturally] in high quality materials and design… like the Empire State Building. And you have the power of expression, and this is how you make something simple and pure with good quality.”

Calabrese’s love of antiques inspires his design process. He collects antique pieces from all over the world, building his designs around his acquired ornaments and knickknacks. “Some people design and then look around for fabrics and accessories to build it. I’m working the opposite way. I first collect pieces and then I use them, of course always with a concept in mind. But I always try to make new things. Even if I don’t travel very far, I find something nice and I say ‘well, maybe I can do something with this piece.’ That is my basis for inspiration.”

In order to produce entire collections by hand, Calabrese works with a small team of craftspeople who build the basic structure of the piece, while he applies every detail by hand. He remarks that a clutch decorated with hand-sewn crystals took him an entire week to make. His jewelry designs reflect the same concepts, and allow Calabrese to work with what he loves: the painstaking selection of each and every detail. What’s next for Calabrese’s collection? Shoes, of course. He’s currently playing with different silks and embellishments for an upcoming runway show in which every piece will be designed by him, as he has previously collaborated with clothing designers to show his accessories. The new concept will feature raincoats, bags, shoes, jewelry, and silks…lots of silks.

While his aesthetic is decidedly playful (the inside of each bag remains a mystery until opening), Calabrese emphasizes the importance of striking a balance between risk and wearability: “You can take a risk, I definitely take risks with my products—they’re not basic. But everything has a limit. It’s not going to be successful just because I do something crazy. The details must support an extravagant concept.” His love for Art Deco inspires the intersection between “classy and crazy” in his designs. Clean lines temper bright colors and intricate embroidery: each design a careful

Calabrese plans to make no more than eight pairs of each shoe design, changing up colors and other details in keeping with his signature concept. He wants to include a card inside the yellow box containing each of his products, with his handwritten initials and a number to authenticate each piece. “I work very hard on this concept every day. People think that if they copy successful companies then they’ll be successful. That’s not true. If you have a concept in your mind that you’re passionate about, then everything else comes naturally.”

STONY BROOKSIDE An Inn for Cyclists By Jody Sokol

A

fter designing a master bedroom suite and adjoining office, my client announced that she was leaving her job and turning her historic Stony Brook home into New York’s first Bed & Bike for cyclists. Elyse and her husband Marty enjoy traveling the world with their bicycles. It was on one of these tours in Italy that the couple thought up the idea of opening up an inn for bicyclists on Long Island. Thus, the Stony Brookside was born. We needed to move quickly to design the Inn’s dining room. The first thing that needed to go was the bright red paint and wallpaper. The goal was to make the room bright and inviting, a place to linger over your morning coffee before heading out for your bike ride. The red walls were replaced with cream patchwork faux leather wallpaper, brightening up the space. My client wanted to use her existing dining room table and chairs, particularly because they were going to be used daily. A metal buffet is the perfect place for the morning spread, not to mention that it adds the right touch of edginess to the space. An oversized octagon mirror with a distressed wood frame complements the buffet. A movable window seat was built into the window to take advantage of the beautiful grounds. Gray chenille fabric on the window seat balances the cream wallpaper and the cream linen roman shades. A nest of pillows makes it an inviting place to relax, and of course we couldn’t have pillows without having

52

bicycles represented on some of them. An industrial bar cart holds all the days’ beverages and fills in the corner nicely. The cherry on the cake is a custom piece commissioned by my client: a one-of-a-kind chandelier made out of bike chains. Now if that doesn’t say ride, I don’t know what does. The Stony Brookside is located near the heart of Stony Brook Village, overlooking Stony Brook Mill Pond and backing up to an old grist mill. Bicyclists can enjoy the wooded, winding hills of the North Shore or find flat roads for easy riding. Shops, museums, vineyards, nature reserves, beaches and historic sites are all within a short bike ride away from the inn.

AINSLEY EARHARDT The Newscaster's Blossoming Year By Christine Stoddard | Photos by C. Camarena

Fox & Friends co-host Ainsley Earhardt talks broadcast journalism, Manhattan motherhood and her best year yet.

O

n November 2015, Ainsley Earhardt of Fox News sat in a hospital bed with a view of the FDR Drive and the East River. Unbeknownst to her, the anchor and correspondent was on the cusp of becoming a household name. But for the first time in her adult life, Earhardt was not thinking about her career. Instead, she let the joy of long-awaited motherhood completely consume her. Friends and family from Fox News and her native South Carolina streamed in and out to see Earhardt and her newborn daughter, Hayden. They brought cards, gifts and enough flowers for the room to double as a garden. Still, among the constant throng of visitors, one moment stands out. “My parents are here and we’re watching TV,” says Earhardt as she sets the scene in an exclusive interview with Metropolitan. “We were watching Fox when the [hosts] start congratulating me for having a baby. They put a picture of my baby on the news.” Suddenly, Earhardt’s identities as a broadcast journalist and new mother collided. The moment set the tone for 2016, the year that Earhardt says all of her dreams became reality—and in New York City, no less—just as she had always hoped.

BIG-CITY AMBITIONS Fast-forward to February 2016, mere days before Earhardt was scheduled to return from maternity leave. That’s when Roger Ailes, the chairman and CEO of Fox, promoted Earhardt to co-host of Fox & Friends. Her daughter Hayden was just four months old when she replaced Elizabeth Hasselbeck on the curvy couch with Brian Kilmeade and Steve Doocy. Since Earhardt’s arrival, the program’s viewership has spiked 30 percent. “It took 20 years to get my dream job,” she says. “Now I’m finally able to breathe. It’s the best time in my life and it’s all been worth it.” Prior to starting her New York adventure, Earhardt worked in local markets. She earned her first reporting job right after graduating from the University of South Carolina at local station WLTX-News 19 in Columbia, South Carolina. From Columbia, she moved to a station in San Antonio, Texas.

“Our profession is crazy,” Earhardt says of the broadcast television industry. “The hours are all over the place and you don’t get paid a lot in the beginning. You miss out on what your friends are doing on the weekend. But I was passionate and willing to make those sacrifices.”

THE JOURNEY TO MOTHERHOOD Earhardt also marvels at her chance to become a mother. Though she had wanted a child for years, she was not sure about the timing. She always prioritized her demanding career.

From San Antonio, Earhardt made the jump to Fox News in New York City joining the channel’s signature morning program after spending nearly a decade working in less prominent roles. Starting in 2007, she reported on weekend and overnight shifts.

“I remember focusing so much on my job and putting off having a family until I was at the place where I wanted to be in my career,” says Earhardt.

“I’ll never forget when my dad asked if I would get paid more because I worked on the weekends,” says Earhardt. “I said, ‘No, Dad. But that’s where you have to start.’” Her first glimmer of stardom came in 2013. That’s when Earhardt was named the co-host of Fox & Friends FIRST, the 5 a.m. weekday show. The role allowed her to fill in on Fox & Friends and anchor on weekends before she scored the position of weekday co-host. “Sometimes I can’t believe how good God is and how blessed I am,” says Earhardt. “There are only five main network female anchors and I get to say I’m one of them. I still pinch myself because I can’t believe it.”

58

Then she married Will Proctor, vice president and wealth advisor at Neuberger Berman, in October 2012. Feeling supported at Fox, Earhardt and her husband tried for a baby. Unfortunately, their efforts were not fruitful the first time and Earhardt suffered a miscarriage. The couple was desperate to try again. “I would see moms with their babies pushing strollers on the street. And I said, ‘Please, Lord, let me have a healthy, viable child,’” says Earhardt. When she got pregnant the second time, she kept going in for ultrasounds out of fear she would lose another baby. Earhardt was reassured when the doctor repeatedly told her how healthy her child was. “When I heard that heartbeat, I couldn’t wait to be a mother,” she says. Happy and relieved, she announced her pregnancy on Fox & Friends FIRST in June 2015.

March 2017 | 59

Still, Earhardt will never forget the struggle of trying to plan her career and family in her thirties. She learned that sometimes plans make no difference.

and Van Gogh to your child. In Manhattan, you can take your child to the museum across the street to see the artists’ real works.

“We tell God that this is when it’s going to happen and God says, ‘No, that’s not going to happen,’” says Earhardt.

“It’s educational raising children in New York City,” says Earhardt, who cites the ballet, concerts and the zoo as just a smattering of the city’s many gems.

This is what she recommends to other ambitious city women balancing career and family dreams: “Just try; just do it. It might not come as easily as you want it to. Embrace it.”

Though she has lived throughout Manhattan and in Brooklyn’s Dumbo neighborhood, today Earhardt calls the Upper East Side home. She considers it the ideal place to raise her daughter.

BRINGING UP BABY Of course, much of what Earhardt has planned has happened. Now she has the glamorous job, the baby and the husband of her dreams, all in the city that has captivated her since childhood. As a little girl in South Carolina, Earhardt remembers watching Big Apple events on television. It didn’t matter if she was soaking in the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade or witnessing the Rockefeller Center Christmas-tree lighting—she was enchanted.

“The Upper East Side is more my personality now. It’s very family friendly,” she says. “I love to go downtown, but being a working mom makes it harder now.” She lists the schools, restaurants and museums among the neighborhood’s perks. Earhardt also appreciates her church community and her proximity to both the airport and Long Island. “It’s the perfect neighborhood,” she adds.

“Events like those are magical to me,” says Earhardt. “They represent something so much bigger than New York City. They represent America.” Now that she’s a mother, Earhardt sees these events as treasures to offer her child. She recalls a recent conversation with a woman at church, who said that in other parts of the country, you can read books about Renoir 60

| MetropolitanMagazineNY.com | 25Amagazine.com

Earhardt grounds herself in the neighborhood through church and her daughter’s activities. Though only 15 months old, Hayden keeps a dynamic schedule with music and swim lessons. Soon, Earhardt plans to enroll her in French lessons, too. “Now that I’m a mom, I am a lot busier,” she says. “My schedule is jampacked. I’m not only taking care of one person but two.”

Earhardt, who has the help of a nanny, takes pleasure in spending time with Hayden. Often it means multitasking (like taking a phone call from a magazine writer while her daughter is napping). While she understands some women do not want children, Earhardt cannot imagine another choice for herself. “It’s such a fun experience,” she says. “You see life through someone else’s eyes—your child’s.” She remembers how seeing rain and feeling snow for the first time struck Hayden with awe.

beauty of something her father used to do for her when she was little. Since Earhardt’s mother left home early for work every day, her father was in charge of breakfast. He took it upon himself to introduce a new poem, prayer or phrase to his children every morning. He wanted to educate and encourage his brood before they went about their tasks for the day. That tradition inspired Earhardt’s first book and New York Times’ bestseller, Take Heart, My Child. Earhardt could not have predicted the storybook’s popularity. In fact, she was terrified that the title would flop. She recalls urging people on air to come to her first book signing.

She tells the story of Hayden’s first encounter with a furry friend. “I breezed into a store with Hayden in my arms and she just started cackling. I turned around and saw there was a lady in the store with a dog,” she says. “Hayden had never seen a dog up close. The dog was all excited, wagging its tail. I thought, ‘That’s so cool.’ I love that she loves animals.”

“I was scared no one would show up, but at the Barnes & Noble, people were lined up for hours,” she says. “We sold out of the book in two days, so we were rushing to print more. We were calling different printers around the U.S. Originally, the publisher planned to print the book in China, but I said, ‘No, keep jobs in America.’”

AN AUTHOR AT LAST Earhardt thinks Hayden inherited her love for animals from her. After all, when the television journalist first sat down to write a children’s book, she wrote it about her dog. That book, however, was not meant to be.

MORE DREAMS TO COME Even with all that has happened since late 2015, Earhardt is not done dreaming. She hopes to author at least two more books and continue reporting big stories on Fox & Friends.

When Earhardt met with her publisher, she was urged to write about her life. After thinking about it and going back and forth, she recognized the

BELLA LUNA'S EUROPEAN CUISINE ella Luna, the Upper West Side neighborhood favorite of nearly 30 years, just re-opened in a beautiful, newly renovated location featuring the same beloved Tuscan classics and a new pizza menu from the brand-new brick oven.

Bella Luna was founded in 1988 by Turkish owner Turgut Balikci, who developed 20 European-influenced restaurants, including the former Diva on West Broadway and current Upper West Side Mediterranean spot Bodrum. Bella Luna is an extension of his passion for European cuisine and connecting with people in a family-friendly and comfortable setting. Completing the Bella Luna team is managing partner and former 10-year general manager Guray Yuksel, and manager Angela Noll, who has worked with Balikci for years and brings renewed energy into the established venue. To begin the experience, enjoy creations from 10-year Bella Luna Executive Chef German “Primo” Angelo, who offers starters like Beef Carpaccio, razor-thin slices of raw beef drizzled with olive oil, lemon, capers, arugula and parmesan, and Bruschetta that rivals the best in the city, with juicy tomatoes, basil, olive oil and balsamic on toasted Tuscan bread. Choose from specialty pastas like the Capellini alla Campagnola, a unique blend of warm goat cheese, sun-dried tomatoes, broccoli, garlic

and olive oil, and Pesto Linguine with Shrimp with sundried tomatoes. Entrées include fork-tender Braised Lamb Shanks with buttery mashed potatoes, or choice of Marsala, piccata or parmesan veal or chicken. Pizza choices range from the Bella Luna with wild mushrooms, onion, fontina and truffle oil to Spicy Lamb with lamb ragú, Italian hot peppers and spices. The interior was designed by Daniel Lee of QBIK Construction to evoke a warm, rustic charm, and features a scenic mural that was revealed as a pleasant surprise during renovations, and is believed to be from the 1930s. The space has transformed throughout the years, from a general market in the 1890s to a speakeasy/restaurant by the late William Pogue during and after Prohibition, from 1933 until 1968, to a flower shop in the 1990s. The décor includes pieces from the original location, like mahogany table tops with wrought-iron bases by Italian artist Arturo Di Modica, who famously created and installed the Charging Bull in front of the New York Stock Exchange. Bella Luna is located at 574 Columbus Avenue between 87th and 88th Streets, New York, NY. Phone number: 212-877-2267. Available for catering and take-out. Hours of operation are Sunday throughThursday: lunch 12 p.m. to 4 p.m.; dinner 4 p.m.to 10 p.m., Friday and Saturday: lunch 12 p.m. to 4 p.m.; dinner 4 p.m. to10:30 p.m. bellalunanyc.com.

Simon Indian Palace offers regional Indian cuisine created by three experienced chefs--Executive Chef Jalal Bhuiyan (Baluchi’s, Amma) curry specialist Miraj Bhuiyan (Baluchi’s, Curry Kitchen) and tandoor master Shohag Alam (Mahal Kita, Nimbooda). Manager M. Islam Kokan has a business and hospitality background, and completed hotel and restaurant management training at Marriot International in the UK. He also draws from his vast experience working in every aspect of a restaurant to ensure top-quality service from his trained staff. The menu is divided into vast vegetarian appetizers and entrées, seafood, chicken and meat selections, biryanis and tandoori specials. All produce and meats are purchased fresh from the farmer’s market daily in small quantities to ensure quality ingredients. For vegetarian appetizers, consider Lasooni Gobi, an exceptional version of a culinary favorite, with crispy pan-fried cauliflower coated in a flavorful garlic sauce with a touch of sweetness from tamarind, and Tandoori Vegetables grilled with spices and creamy paneer cheese. Standout vegetarian entrées are Kadai Paneer, homemade cheese simmered in a red gravy with freshly ground spices,

Chicken Chettinad is a South Indian delicacy, prepared with tomato, onions, garlic, ginger mustard seeds, curry leaf and coconut. Lamb is presented with Rogan Josh in an aromatic cardamom sauce, and Korma, slathered with almond curry. Tandoor-fired specials are savory Rack of Lamb, marinated with Indian spices and cooked to fork-tender perfection, served with potatoes and peppers. Classic Biryanis are offered in a selection of

MESSINA MARKET Bringing Quality Food to New York

W

By W.A. Muller

hen an Italian family invites you to dinner, what do you usually do? I mean after you breathlessly accept in excited anticipation. You have a light breakfast that day and skip lunch because your stomach is going to need the space. Because there’s a powerful mother figure scooping yet another helping onto your plate, refusing your refusal, commanding you to keep eating: “Mangia, Mangia, Mangia!” That’s the picture I painted for Daniele Messina, President of the Messina Group, a family-owned company that runs four restaurants in New York

70

| MetropolitanMagazineNY.com | 25Amagazine.com

and a catering business. I expected him to take the bait and run with it, in his description of what his Messina Market eateries offer. Instead, he threw my picture right out the window. In other words, he was frank, which was refreshing. “The Italian culture from Italy is actually a very different way of eating. It’s actually smaller portions, a lot of fresh food. It’s a lot of vegetables, a lot of pasta and not actually too much meat. There’s a lot of fresh food in Italy so that’s why most people are not overweight and why they have the second highest longevity in the world.”

Chef Ramone Herrera in the kitchen.

It’s clear that Messina Market embodies all of that. All the food is fresh and your order is cooked right in front of you. Messina says it’s the reason his customers keep coming back. They rave about the different stations where you can get everything custom made, from omelets and fajitas to crepes and smoothies. All of it whipped up right on the spot.

The thing is, he’s able to get away with it, because the food at Messina Market is that good. He points out that Grandma’s secret ingredient (Hint: the L word) is the same one he uses too..: “You have to really have a love for food, and on top of that you have to have an understanding because it’s a very delicate subject in the sense that people are ingesting what you’re making.”

“People feel more comfortable when they’re watching people make their food, fresh in front of their eyes. It gives them a sense of security,” Messina notes.

At this point, I’m starting to understand where his frankness comes from. Mixing words leaves room for error and that’s not an option in his line of work. Messina put it this way, “I have friends that have construction companies that at the end of the day, if something like the paint was incorrect, they can always go back and correct it the next day. We can’t do that in our business. You can’t tell somebody, ‘oh, have your party again.’"

But is it as good as Grandma’s home-cooking? Once again, Messina wastes no time setting me straight by telling me about a conversation he recently had with an acquaintance: “Somebody asked me one time, ‘why is it that my grandma can make something so good?’ I said, ‘She’s not really as good of a chef as you think that she is.’ He said, ‘What do you mean?’ I said, ‘All it is, is that she uses quality ingredients and makes it fresh. That’s really why it tastes so good. That’s pretty much the premise of everything.” Did I mention Messina was frank? The guy is challenging Grandma.

So frank. So refreshing. It’s clear Messina Market is an extension of Messina himself. It’s about being real-Real food, real people. And taking the time to appreciate both. messinamarket.com March 2017 | 71

GOING GREEN

Throwing a Fabulous St. Patrick’s Day Party By Andrea Correale

E

ven if you’re not Irish, March brings a holiday enjoyed by many – St. Patrick’s Day. Although St. Patrick’s Day is primarily celebrated in bars and with parades, it’s a great opportunity to have a gathering at home. Plus, almost 13 percent of the New York population is of Irish descent, so all the more reason to join in the festivities! It’s all about breaking bread (Irish soda bread that is) and celebrating with friends and family. To set a festive mood, tell your guests in advance to wear some form of green. The reason that people wear green has very interesting roots: the belief is that wearing green makes you invisible to the leprechauns, who will pinch you if they see you. So make sure to wear green to avoid getting pinched! You can even order some fun leprechaun hats for your guests to wear at your party. As for setting your buffet table, use the color green and accent it with gold to continue the theme throughout your home.

72

| MetropolitanMagazineNY.com | 25Amagazine.com

For a St. Patrick’s Day party, the food you serve should be very traditional. Very much like Thanksgiving, many of the St. Patrick’s Day favorites are primarily enjoyed once a year, so it’s a great excuse to make some traditional and delicious Irish dishes. The most popular is corned beef and cabbage, which is very easy to cook – just use a Dutch oven on the stove top, the oven itself, or even a crock pot. A crock pot is great because you can set it and forget it without sacrificing quality. When shopping for corned beef, be mindful that you should purchase three-quarters of a pound per person. Stew is another option for those who don’t like corned beef. I recommend making it with lamb, stout, potatoes, and herbs. It’s an easy one-pot meal that can be made in advance and simply reheated. This will save you from stress the day of your party and make hosting a breeze.

Shepherd’s pie is another favorite that is easy to make. It’s essentially a casserole with layers of cooked meat and vegetables, topped with mashed potatoes and baked until the potatoes are brown. There are a variety of different recipes you can choose from – pick the one that appeals to you and you can’t go wrong. As for desserts and other treats – don’t forget the Irish soda bread! If you don’t want to make it yourself, head to the local bakery. You can also serve a green colored dessert to go with the theme, like mint chocolate chip mousse, shamrock cookies, or green colored French macarons. Finally, it isn’t a party without cocktails! It’s the perfect time to pull out the green food coloring and serve up some ice cold beer in glass mugs with a drop of food coloring. Other options include an Irish stout, or a signature cocktail using Jameson or another Irish whiskey. For a dessert cocktail, try Irish coffee topped with some delicious whipped cream.

Combine all of these elements and you’re bound to have a fabulous celebration, whether you’re Irish and celebrating your heritage, or just want a reason to gather friends and family together. Cheers! PRISONER OF PHUKET, THAILAND Suspended Between the Sky and Sea in a Luxury Villa By Janis Turk

T

hai villa, travel writer Janis Turk is trapped in her very own SRI PAWNA heaven …and never wants to be set free. I never saw much of Thailand when I was there last month—I was pretty much held prisoner by my hotel room. Oh sure. I could leave whenever I wanted, but where could I go that could possibly be any better? There, in my own luxurious private ocean-side villa, I could open sliding doors letting the colors of the sea and scent of lemongrass on the wind fill my rooms. I could dance to a sexy Brazilian bossa nova tune while sipping chilled wine from my kitchen and bathe in my own private pool as the sun set. With yellow sun, white sand and jungle green glory all around, who could ask for anything more? The Sri Pawna Resort, on the mountainous rainforest-filled island of Phuket on the Andaman Sea, quietly pulls guests into its sexy undertow. Enveloped in a Tarzan-worthy jungle edged by black rocks and white beaches, this resort is like a plantation of exquisite villas spread out over 40 acres of tropical paradise. Elegant modern stand-alone houses of glass, bamboo and hardwoods, with large private pools hugging the corners of each room like a wrap-around porch, the villas are perched high on the terraced sides of a hill overlooking the sea. 76

| MetropolitanMagazineNY.com | 25Amagazine.com

Like big bungalows, the villas offer shady patios, large indoor living spaces with gas fireplaces, two bathrooms and a kitchen. They also have a steam room/sauna and shower, as well as an outdoor shower, an enormous spa jet bathtub, mood lighting, lounge areas and fast Wi-Fi. (note: that sentence is a little too long to absorb it all well. Maybe break it up?So leaving all this to go absolutely anywhere else—even to breakfast at the Baba Pool Club, with its 82-foot lap pool and sprawling gourmet buffet—wasn’t easy. Built in traditional Thai style, with understated furnishings in colors of earthy minerals and the sea, the villas are centered by wind- and sun-kissed courtyards where ocean breezes and the ceaseless cadence of waves push and pull at guests’ heartstrings. Set along slender roads lined with dense foliage high on a hill dotted with 10 restaurants and numerous bars, pools and outdoor lounges, the resort has an enchanting “Lost Horizon,” quality. With water, water everywhere, and iguana green fauna waving in the wind to the boats at sea, it’s hard to imagine anyplace more perfect. Landing at the airport in Phuket, guests are greeted by a Sri Pawna driver and whisked in a BMW to the resort. During the smooth 45-minute trek to the

property, I spied the Thailand I expected: a vibrant clamorous scene filled with street food carts, open-air markets, bicycles, concrete buildings, banana and rubber plants, and lots of bamboo. Exciting sights, smells and sounds had a spicy edginess, and locals strolled along the road, stopping to laugh and talk with friends. It reminded me of a place in a Jimmy Buffet song. Passing old weathered buildings with a wind-blown beachy look, I never imagined the luxury I’d find at the five-star Sri Pawna. At the gate, high trees and dense bushes rim the road, and even though there are 52 pool villas and 30 new pool suites (called The Habita collection), many the size of large houses, each seems entirely private. An open-air “Tuk-Tuk” cart shuttles guests about the hilly property.

as guests watch and sip cold drinks, like the resort’s splashy lychee cocktail. These many restaurant choices allow guests to sample everything from traditional Thai cuisine, to delicious Italian, Japanese, American, Chinese and Continental dishes in an array of breathtaking settings. The resort offers cooking classes, too.

The resort’s newly relocated Cool Spa, a large indoor/outdoor retreat with its own pool, juice/snack bar, lounge area and salon facilities also boasts spectacular views. There well-trained masseuses knead stress from workweary muscles with calming therapeutic signature treatments based on restorative ancient Thai traditions, inspiring mind and body renewal.

On my last night in Thailand, I visited one of the most beautiful bars I’d ever seen, a rooftop platform overlooking the sea called Baba Nest. There suspended between the heavens and the sea, I felt happily trapped between Phuket’s perfection and divine promise.

The body is also well nurtured by Sri Pawna’s 10 restaurants, including the fun poolside HotBox where chefs grill meat and fresh fish over open flames

When I managed to leave my villa and escape to the beach and the spa, or swim in one of the property’s many splendid pools, enjoy a cooking class, or take a boat excursion to a nearby island, I fell under the spell of Sri Pawna’s myriad marvels.

Janis Turk is a travel writer and photographer who has vagabonded all over the globe yet still claims Thailand has some of the most beautiful beaches she’s seen. March 2017 | 77

WHERE THE BEARS ARE

A Bucket-list Trip to Churchill, Manitoba, Canada By Janis Turk

E

ach year, when Central Park is aglow with leaves of red and gold, I long to be where polar bears play on the icy surface of Hudson Bay, near Churchill, a tiny frozen tundra town in northeastern Canada.

this little sub-arctic settlement only to fall in love with this quirky little frozen Northern Exposure kind of place. Most spend a great deal of money to go there, and many return each year, just for the chance to get up close and personal with polar bears.

Churchill is hardly the epicenter of anything. There are no paved roads leading to this tiny Manitoba town where temperatures often drop as low as -6˚F in November, and the wind howls and snow blows so relentlessly that branches grow only on one side of trees. Flights land just a few times a day (if there’s not ice on the runway), and a two-day train traveling 1,063 miles comes only twice a week from Winnipeg, so getting to Churchill requires some stamina.

There is nothing quite as thrilling as seeing a polar bear in the wild. Churchill is “The Polar Bear Capital of the World,” for each fall polar bears begin their annual trek from their summer habitat on the tundra back to the banks of Hudson Bay, prime seal-hunting territory. Bears linger along the coastline waiting for the bay to freeze so they can hunt for their supper.

And no, there isn’t much to do once you arrive. Churchill has only a few bars, and I’m told there is a bowling alley and movies at the community center, though I’ve never seen them (and I’ve been there twice). There are just a few restaurants (friendly down-home diners) and a handful of B&Bs and family inns, none of which are five-star fancy. Even so, each September through early November, thousands of world travelers make pilgrimage to 78

| MetropolitanMagazineNY.com | 25Amagazine.com

To see the bears, don’t just show up in Churchill and hope one comes lumbering down the street—though that could happen, so you must never walk after dark. The best way to see bears is to book a polar bear safari expedition from an experienced company like Churchill Nature Tours, whose custom-built tundra vehicles, or Polar Rovers, with highly-trained guides bring you where the bears are. These offer a safe, warm and comfortable vantage point for spotting polar bears. Like converted school busses with a modern bathroom, a high open viewing deck off the back, and mammoth

all-terrain tires, these nifty vehicles allow polar-bear-watchers to spend hours each day seeing and learning about bears. Everyone is guaranteed his own window, so photographers can get the perfect polar bear pictures from their seats. Of course, you can move around and stand outside on the platform to get even closer. Male polar bears can weigh more than 1,320 pounds and stand more than 10 feet tall. Sometimes you’ll spot them alone, and they may come close and sniff your feet from underneath the platform. You don’t need a zoom lens, then, and they look so sweet and cuddly that you may have to be reminded not to get too close. These wild creatures aren’t Teddy bears— their massive paws can kill with one swipe. You may see a mother bear and her cubs or young males sparring just for fun. You might also spy snow owls, bald eagles, osprey, Artic fox, snow buntings, wild geese, long-tailed ducks, wolves, and elk. Lunch (with a warm cup of soup) is served on board, along with hot cocoa and coffee. During the trip, guests get to know one another, and sometimes life-long friendships are forged. Photographers share tips, and there is often lots laughter. All the while you’re learning about bears, birds, the terrain, the territory, climate and more.

Each evening friends gather at the family-owned Gypsy’s Bakery and Restaurant where owner, Fred Da Silva, warmly welcomes customers. Gypsy’s makes doughnuts, pies and good desserts and serves favorites, like juicy hamburgers and a light filet of sole. There are spirits to warm the insides, and after dinner some hit the bars or hear live music at places like the Seaport Hotel a few doors down (a taxi ensures you won’t be attacked by a bear). After dark, the Northern Lights come out to play, like a giant’s green finger-paint on the frosty sky. Dogsledding, bird-watching, snow-shoeing, cross-country skiing, snowmobiling and helicopter rides make a Churchill adventure even more unforgettable. In fall, it’s all about the bears; in winter, people come to see the Northern Lights and visit the Churchill Northern Studies Centre, where classes, workshops and other events take place, including igloo-building fun. In summer, beluga whale expeditions are a big draw, too. So to cross “See polar bears” off your bucket list, start planning a trip to Churchill now, and when you get there, tell the bears I send my best.

AT MANHATTAN'S DOWNTOWN FOUR SEASONS By Lisa Loverro

L

ower Manhattan has made a comeback, bigger and bolder than ever, not only with corporate business but also in retail shopping and leisure travel. One of the newest jewels in this hot and trendy neighborhood is the Four Seasons Hotel New York Downtown, officially opened to the public on September 19, 2016. Just a five-minute walk from the 9/11 Memorial and the new Oculus, (the centerpiece of The World Trade Center transportation hub and shopping mall), the new Four Seasons Downtown hotel, designed by Robert A.M. Stern (credits include the Abington house on the High Line), offers the perfect reprieve from the city’s hustle and bustle. With a two-story lobby of muted tones, a magnificent spiral staircase, and chaise lounges, the glitz and glamour of the Four Seasons welcomes guests upon arrival. So, on a snowy day and in desperate need for a luxurious retreat, I checked into the hotel for an indulgent weekend. The service here is impeccable, as one would expect from this hotel brand. The doormen know you by name, room service is punctual and the reception staff greets you with warm, welcoming smiles. My room, with interiors by YabuPushelberg (the Park Hyatt New York), was spacious, even by NYC hotel standards, and a marble bathroom complete with a deep soaking tub and TV mirror instantly put me in a “staycation” state of mind. There are 189 rooms and suites in the

building’s 82 floors; 24 floors of hotel space with remaining floors serving as residences. The Spa at the Four Seasons Downtown is a rejuvenating escape from the concrete jungle featuring an extensive menu elevated by Dr. Burgener Switzerland skincare products, debuting in the United States at the hotel, and Omorovicza of Hungary facial treatments (exclusively here). The urban-chic retreat also offers a steam room and, even better, a 75-foot heated indoor lap pool with plush chaise lounge chairs and natural light. In the summer, there’s an outdoor terrace and sun deck for guests to enjoy. Although the hotel does not have a dedicated restaurant, attached to the hotel is CUT, by Wolfgang Puck, one of the world’s most famous chefs. Bringing his award-winning steak restaurant to The Big Apple, and the first for Puck in NYC, the restaurant is the perfect partnership for the Four Seasons Downtown. The bar at CUT is sexy and hot, filled with a chic crowd every night of the week. If you prefer room service, there is 24-hour in-room dining, although the CUT menu is not available, but rather a kitchen menu from the hotel. The downtown scene has never been more elegant, thanks to the opening of the Four Seasons New York Downtown. For more information: fourseasons.com

LUXURY LAYOVER IN DOHA Making the Most of Your Journey By Janis Turk

T

he maxim, “It’s not the destination but the journey that counts,” sounds trite these days. What with the headaches and hassles of airports and flights, the journey can be the most dreaded part of any long trip. But savvy world travelers know the key to putting the joy back into journeys is breaking up trips with luxury layovers in exciting places they otherwise might not visit—like Doha. As the capital and largest city of Qatar on the Arabian Peninsula, Doha is one of the world’s wealthiest nations, so it’s the perfect place for a restful break between long international flights to destinations in Asia or Africa. Doha is clean and safe and has a gleaming airport, and some of the best international hotel chains have superior properties there, including The St. Regis, The Four Seasons, Kempinski and more. So a stop in Doha can inject a healthy dose of R&R into what would be an otherwise brutal itinerary. Sure, you could fly 23-plus hours with long fights and uncomfortable layovers en 84

| MetropolitanMagazineNY.com | 25Amagazine.com

route to Asia or Africa, but why suffer? You’d only arrive exhausted and lose precious vacation time to jet-lag. Qatar Airways allows travelers to add a short transit or stopover (between five and 96 hours) in Doha without an additional fare charge, and the airline takes care of your transit visa (about a $70 savings). Just use the multi-city option to include a stop in Doha when booking your flight. It’s that easy. (Just remember to apply for the pre-approved transit visa at least seven days prior to departure). This way, you’ll sleep in a nice hotel, see the sites and lounge by a pool for a day or two before boarding another flight. Not sure how to arrange a layover in a foreign land? No worries. Qatar also offers easy stopover packages, including hotel stays and tours, so you won’t need to do a thing. A driver will whisk you to your hotel in a luxury vehicle, and then your vacation can begin.

If you appreciate creature comforts, familiar brands, clean surroundings and hassle-free excursions, Doha delivers. Fine hotels like The St. Regis Doha assure a high level of service, comfort and amenities. They also all offer the best in dining and entertainment, like The St. Regis’ rooftop-level “Jazz at Lincoln Center Doha” (JALCD), a sister-club of their namesake in New York. The St. Regis Doha is a sophisticated five-star property with twelve destination restaurants and lounges, including two Gordon Ramsey restaurants, along with a rooftop bar and dance club, a full-service spa and salon, boutique shops and an Olympic-size swimming pool with views of the Arabian Gulf. But don’t hole up in your hotel. A car can take you to the heart of Doha, Souq Waqif, a traditional Qatar marketplace. This historic cultural city center and vibrant bazaar dates back more than 250 years, though it was renovated in 2004. There a labyrinth of alleyways and cobbled streets hold countless shops, with everything from spices to hand-embroidered linens, baskets and even falcons. While there, be sure to book a tour through Embrace Doha, a stellar company that arranges meaningful cultural encounters with locals, like an unforgettable authentic dinner in a traditional Qatari house in the souk. Next, visit the exciting, modern Museum of Islamic Art, one of Doha’s most wow-worthy attractions, in a waterfront building designed by I M Pei, the architect who created the Louvre’s glass pyramid pavilion. Don’t forget to have

your hotel concierge make a reservation for you for an unforgettable lunch on the museum’s top floor at the Alain Ducasse restaurant Idam, featuring a delectable selection of contemporary French Mediterranean cuisine with an Arabian twist, with spectacular views of Doha Bay. Then drive past the Corniche seawall to see wooden fishing dhows bob on the bay. Make a stop to shop at the boutiques and galleries of the Pearl, a man-made island that’s now Doha’s premier shopping and dining destination, and then visit the cultural waterfront village of Katara. Best of all, book a day trip or overnight stay on the Arabian Gulf at the Regency Holiday Desert Camp. There you can go “dune bashing” with 4x4 vehicles, quad biking across the terrain, or take a camel ride. Then for your last night dine at one of Doha’s many extraordinary restaurants, like Toro Toro, celebrity chef Richard Sandoval’s jewel at the Marsa Malaz Kempinski. Remember, if the journey feels like the worst part of your vacation, you’re doing it wrong. Next time, opt for a luxury layover in Doha. You won’t be disappointed. MAKING TIME FOR HEALTH

W

By Lindsay Brustein Rosen

hether it’s work, school, your family life, or your social life, there are many factors of our lives that we must juggle on a daily basis. Many people report that when they get busy, regular exercise and good nutrition are the first two things that they have difficulty balancing. However, it is important to remember that our health is an equally important part of our lives and maintaining good health will impact the way we feel in all other facets of life. TIPS FOR MAKING TIME FOR HEALTH WHEN YOU’RE BUSY: Add exercise to your weekly calendar At the beginning of the week, sit down with your calendar and figure out where you can fit in exercise. Be specific! Instead of just writing “work out,” write in something more defined like “30 minutes of yoga” or “25 minutes on treadmill and 10 minutes of arms.” It is important to write it in a specific time slot as well. This will ensure that you treat it the same as any other concrete appointment that you commit yourself to. MEAL PREP Devote some time on a Sunday to preparing your food for the week ahead. Wash and chop vegetables so they are ready to consume, for example. You can even plan out some other meals or snacks for the week. I like to make some overnight oatmeal, healthy banana muffins, chopped vegetable salads and shredded chicken so that certain snacks and meals are made easier. Prepping your food helps to increase your chances that you consume nutritionally balanced items. KEEP EXTRA GYM CLOTHES AND SNEAKERS IN YOUR CAR OR OFFICE Many people tell me that their motivation to exercise decreases as the day wears on. You have two options here: 1) exercise first thing in the morning and “get it over with!” or 2) pack your exercise clothes with you so that you are less likely to unwind (and therefore cancel your workout) when you get home. I guarantee that once you start, you will get used to this new routine. FIND ACCOUNTABILITY FOR EXERCISE Recruit a friend as your workout buddy, or attend workout classes at a gym to keep yourself accountable. You’re much less likely to blow off a workout if you know someone is expecting to see you. Similarly, attending a workout class that you signed up for in advance can ensure that you get that workout in. My gym has a policy where you lose your class privileges for 3 months for every 3 classes missed. Knowing that I will be unable to attend classes for a few months gives me that extra push to show up each time! FIND NUTRITIONAL ACCOUNTABILITY It is also important to keep your daily diet in-check. I recommend using a paper journal or even an electronic App like My Fitness Pal or Lose It to keep you on top of your diet. This tool helps you eat more “mindfully” as you have to stop and pay attention to what, how much and when you are eating. You are less likely to grab a handful of chips or candy when you aren’t even hungry if you know that you have to record it afterwards. Although this may seem tedious, journaling is not necessary long-term. After a few weeks of recording your daily intake, you will be on your way to creating some better dietary habits already.

DENISE S. FRAILE Entrepreneur and Designer Photography by Michael Laurenzano

H

aving lived in Europe, Canada and the U.S., I see the world through the lenses of many cultures. Because I love art and creativity, I am a big fan of anything that makes this world a more beautiful place, including Sean Connery. I have always had an eye for design and creativity while at the same time I enjoy thriving in business competition. As an entrepreneur I combined the two, successfully creating and working with corporate and personal brands for NFL athletes, red carpet celebrities and Fortune 500 companies. I have always followed one of my favorite sayings, “adapting is great, leading is better.” Understanding different brands and translating this into an experience, I drew a parallel between home and lifestyle design. Getting to know and articulating a brand is much like getting to know a person. Brands have their own personality, look, expression, purpose and characteristics that they are identified by. Much like designing a home, all of those traits need to be creatively expressed. We are all unique, and fact is, we all have created our own personal brands whether we know it or not: our mannerisms, our sense of style, the fashions we wear, the trends with which we identify combine with the rituals of our daily life. The one place this all comes together: our home. The home becomes an extension of the self—elevating our most personal sentiments, convictions and aspirations to a reality we can see, touch, feel and live. It becomes our lifestyle. I have never fit the average or ordinary mold, and I don’t believe that my client’s homes should reflect anything but their unique individuality. With this approach I started my lifestyle and home design brand DSF by Denise Fraile, bringing unique looks and character to luxury homes and lifestyles, and currently designing the home of LexisNexis CEO, Haywood Talcove. Every project is completed with a personal logo for my client’s that captures them and their home. Strongly believing and being passionate about philanthropy, I also use my creativity to create impact. Having received a humanitarian award for my commitment to breaking the cycle of child poverty and working closely with JustWorld International, I apply social entrepreneurship and my experience with creativity. The program that I direct most of my focus on is Los Patojos, a CNN Hero-nominated project in Guatemala that applies different disciplines of art and creative expression throughout their curriculum. Recently, I also spoke at the Nexus Global forum in Miami, my topic being the healing of arts and creative expression. This summit was attended by some of the world’s most impactful philanthropists and leaders all collaborating on creating change.

UNLEASH YOUR DNA… TO UNLOCK YOUR CODE! Photo and Story By Katherine Sempecos

S

ay good-bye to aging, as we welcome a new era. Clinical Antiaging and the study of how we age, be it evolutionary, biological, medical, social or psychological has evolved substantially in recent years. Together with the implementation of the many alternative forms of medicine and now DNA and Blood Chemistry Analysis combined with technologically advanced medical esthetic treatments, we are able to completely rejuvenate the face, body and mind. What a great time to be alive and benefit from these technologies. This new approach of utilizing DNA Analysis enables us to uncover the root cause and really nip it in the bud before it becomes an issue. The truth is that Aging is a disease. Yes, that’s right, Aging can be classified as a disease. And, as such, when treated preventatively, the aging process can be slowed down to greatly improve your quality and longevity of life. Researchers predict that life expectancy will soon reach 120 and so we really want to take even more care of ourselves, starting with changing our lifestyle! Body chemistry is defined by a patient’s unique genetically determined levels of hormones, pre-hormones, vitamins, enzymes, proteins and electrolytes. Optimal body chemistry can result in more energy, better cognitive function, weight loss and increased quality of life. It can also help to achieve better aesthetics, better muscle-to-fat ratios, better levels of energy and stamina, sharper mental acuity, better memory and a longer life. Now you can literally unleash your DNA and “unlock your DNA code” through blood work. This reveals any DNA mutations that may exist and that may be preventing your body from truly reaching its optimal levels. This test provides us with a “blueprint” of your body’s chemistry and takes out the guess work out of what you should be taking, in terms

96

of vitamins, minerals and hormone replacement treatment. It tells us what vitamins and minerals your body can and cannot absorb, what medications you can take, even which diet and exercise is best for you! Then, a completely personalized compounded formula is produced for each individual separately to bring you to your optimal level. This is the ultimate in personalized medicine! Dr. Maria Levada’s, Katherine Sempecos’ and Vasilis Mezinis’ goal for “PRISM Med Spa” is to strive to offer the latest in “Aging Well” programs. They were determined to help women and men regain their quality of life, vitality and youthful appearance. Katherine Sempecos, has been in the Aging Well business for over 20 years. As an Aesthetician and Medical Laser expert, she brings her European expertise and exclusive techniques to PRISM. Having owned her own med spa in Europe for over 15 years, Katherine introduces her unique and effective knowledge to the Long Island market. Vasilis Mezinis is a P.R. and Marketing specialist in the Holistic Health field, who began his career in Europe 10 years ago and also brought his expertise to the U.S. market. Dr. Maria Levada, is an award-winning physician, practicing for over 35 years in NY and Long Island, as a Gynecologist and F.A.C.O.G. She is also a leading authority in Natural Bio Identical Hormone Replacement Therapy, treating both women and men’s hormone imbalances, which are vital to maintaining overall health and well-being by maintaining good organ function, consistent muscle mass, healthy libido, tight and firm skin and managing menopausal symptoms. Dr. Levada was also chosen by IGS (Integrated Genetic Solutions) to be on their Expert Advisory Board, as a leading expert in DNA and Blood Chemistry Analysis.

At PRISM Med Spa we refer to it as “Aging Well”...and the first step to preventing or even reversing certain aspects of Aging is proper diagnosis. Beginning with a comprehensive health, nutrition and lifestyle questionnaire and blood analysis, we prepare a personalized program that will address your individual needs and help you to put your life back on track. THE “AGING WELL” PROGRAM CONSISTS OF: • Compounded Vitamin Formula specifically compounded for each individual based on their DNA and Blood Chemistry Results, after Dr. Levada’s full evaluation • Natural Bio-Identical Hormone Replacement Therapy, if needed • Natural Sleep Therapy, if needed • HGH and HCG prescriptions, if needed • Nutrition and Exercise Guidelines, specifically designed for your individual DNA make-up • Doctor’s evaluation and follow-up every 3 months • Saliva Testing for Cortisol levels to uncover Stress Levels • Bio-Marker Telomerase and ANS Heart Variance Testing which examine internal biological age, as compared to your chronological age • Complete Body Analysis and External Body Assessment (as related to existing age) including BMI index, muscle mass, fat mass, weight, metabolic function, skin condition, tone, etc. Having evaluated the client’s needs, we implement one or more of our Programs and help you to change your lifestyle by introducing an easy, beneficial daily program and examining all aspects such as nutrition, exercise, external aging skin damage, work habits, stress-related issues,

home environment, and even psychological factors that may be affecting your health.

MICK ROCK Mick Rock is a photographer best known for his iconic shots of 1970’s glam rock icons such as Queen, David Bowie, Mick Ronson, Lou Reed, Kevin Ayers, Iggy Pop and The Stooges, The Sex Pistols, The Ramones and Blondie. Rock was born in London, and studied at Emanuel School before going on to study modern languages at Gonville and Caius College, Cambridge —it was here, at Cambridge in 1966, that he met and photographed Pink Floyd founder Syd Barrett, one of his first subjects.

By 1972, Rock was becoming well-known as a photographer, particularly for his photographs of Bowie and Ronson during the Ziggy Stardust tour, on which Mick Rock was the official photographer. He began chronicling the emerging glam and punk movements of the 1970s. One of his most (in)famous photos from this era is his shot of a naked Iggy Pop, highlighting the singer’s impressive penis. His photography spans three decades, and continues today —some of his recent subjects include R.E.M., the Strokes, the Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Johnny Marr, the Foo Fighters and Kate Moss. He now lives in Staten Island, New York City with his wife, Pati, and their daughter Nathalie. Nathalie models frequently during NY Fashion Week. Rock is among the 43 fine-art photographers that were invited to donate a print to FOCUS: an auction of the finest photography to benefit City Harvest. Rock is responsible for album covers including Barrett’s The Madcap Laughs, Queen’s Queen II & Sheer Heart Attack , David Bowie’s

Space Oddity, Lou Reed’s Transformer and Iggy and The Stooges, Raw Power. He also directed several of David Bowie’s early music videos, including those for “Life on Mars?,” “The Jean Genie” and “Space Oddity.” His book Moonage Daydream: The Life and Times of Ziggy Stardust features a 15 000-word text by David Bowie, and hundreds of photos of Bowie in his Ziggy period. Rock was the only photographer to access all areas at the filming of The Rocky Horror Picture Show. In 2005, he released a photo book documenting this spectacle. He photographed Richard Barone nude for the cover and interior of Barone’s book FRONTMAN: Surviving the Rock Star Myth (Backbeat/ Hal Leonard Books, 2007). GARY KALEDA Artist

A PAGE FROM THE FASHION DESIGNER’S SKETCHBOOK

W

ith their delicate brushstrokes and quiet sensuality, Gary Kaleda’s digital paintings build on tradition and leverage technology to transcend painting. He is the first artist to incorporate QR codes into his paintings, enabling viewers to interact with his work through a personal device, thus offering simple interactivity with extraordinary subtlety. A classically trained painter, Kaleda’s self-motivated and self-taught foray into digital art began in the early ’90s and has continued to grow with an ongoing focus on the underlying uncertainty and beauty that exists within humanity’s relationship to technology.

MATTHEW MOSKOWITZ Artist

A

glimpse into Matthew Moskowitz’s Oyster Bay studio reveals an intensity that goes beyond colors. Moskowitz is an emerging figure in the international art scene. The studio walls are lined with large, leaning canvas’s throughout the space. Flipping through the frames you will see layer upon layer of paint in a visual medley of colors. The thick paint textures casts their own shadow on the painting itself. Moskowitz paints from imagination. He says, “The imagery of my work represents experiences I have had. I hardly ever discuss the meaning behind the paintings. They are surreal and everyone sees their own interpretations. Why should I change a person’s perspective on things? They take in what they see and it is no less real than from what I saw when I painted it. Often a person’s feedback reveals ideas that inspire me for my next painting. I try to live in this flow.” “Painting has taught me a lot about life and the processes of the flow,

he says. “When I paint I have learned to let go of control and trust this process, knowing the outcome will be exactly the way it is supposed to be. When I reduced my mindset to simplicity I gained everything. My work and my situations became fluid.” Moskowitz works with art dealers on a global scale. He has had exhibitions in Manhattan, Miami, Bridgehampton, London and Milan. He also receives commission projects from yacht designers, interior decorators and architects. His next aspiration is to have a Paris show. Moskowitz confesses that he is trying to catch up to speed with technology and social media. “I still have a lot to learn about this stuff. I recently joined Instagram so I’ll see what happens.” Moskowitz’s studio is a classic artist’s space with the quirky addition of surfboards and toys in the midst. He is a world-class surfer as well and the father of three “pirates,” as he calls his kids. His work can be seen online at moskowitzstudios.com and on Instagram @moskowitz_studios.
