PUBLISHER’S NOTE
“Doubt is a killer. You just have to know who you are and what you stand for.” - Jennifer Lopez What a year it has been for the hard-working crew at Metropolitan and 25A! So grateful to all the talented people who make up our magazine team and who share their infinite abilities and passion to help us make our magazines and brand the premiere destination for fans of luxury, travel, the arts, fine dining, thought leaders and so much more. Especially grateful to my beautiful and talented daughters Jaime and Jillian who always add their magic to the magazine platform in all they do. Our holiday “Best of 2019” issue includes some notable and newsworthy individuals and businesses who were shining lights over the past year. Happy to see my good friend Kimberly Guilfoyle providing her brilliance and beauty to the proceedings, along with her famous, best-selling author boyfriend Donald Trump, Jr. Manhattan Republican Party Chair and rising party star AJ Catsimatidis looked resplendent in a Republican red dress on a 2019 Metropolitan magazine cover that was as stunning as AJ is business-savvy and multi-talented. Dr. Janette Nesheiwat, a health crusader and hero in the medical community looked pretty in pink on an autumn cover while describing her ambitious plans to improve health services. Of course, we are so thrilled for our dear friend and colleague Dr. Kelly Powers on her recent nuptials. She is such a gem. A crown jewel of the year was perhaps our groundbreaking Influencers issue featuring two cover stars, Bold TV founder Carrie Sheffield and Global Health influencer Jen Selter who generated millions of impressions with her incredible cover. Jen even gave fashion/entertainment icon Tyra Banks some competition for our most buzz-worthy cover! Speaking of buzz, Judge Jerry Springer, Andy Warhol, and actress/author/activist Rose McGowan all scored a cover as did an old friend and real estate, superstar Katrina Campins and first lady Melania! Powerful women who work hard to make the world a better place inspire us and will always have a prominent place at Metropolitan. We also appreciate and are incredibly honored by all our colleagues and friends in the media who have embraced Metropolitan/25A’s fun, thought-provoking and inclusive platform while inviting us to discuss the magazines and top trends on their highly-rated shows. Most of all we are thankful to our loyal and new readers who enable us to do what we love, to inspire, inform and delight. The best is yet to come!

EDITOR’S NOTE
“With a heart full of love and gratitude I now take leave of you,” - George Washington I’m often asked, by people who don’t know, what’s it really like to be the Editor in Chief of two leading Luxury-Arts magazines like Metropolitan and 25A? Truth? I love it. It’s 24-7 8 days a week, but when you enjoy challenges, and what we do, helping shine the spotlight on extraordinary individuals and businesses impacting our great city, country, and world, the job is not a job. it’s a never-ending adventure that brings out one’s passion and compassion in ways that are deeply rewarding. To serve the common good. I love New York City. All that it is and all that it can be. New York City is that magnet that attracts all those who live for action, competition and to strive for the extraordinary. It’s nothing less than the epicenter of the world. The melting pot, the great experiment. New Yorkers know that there is no other place in the world to live. To really live. To face the fire head-on. George Washington and the Sons of Liberty knew that if they were to create a great nation what better place to put the wheels in motion than to raise a beer or two at Fraunces Tavern, still right there on Pearl Street and Broad not far from Ground Zero, where on December 4th, 1783, the Father of our Nation bid an emotional farewell to his devoted officers of the Continental Army. Nearby at St. Paul’s Chapel our great leader would pray in his private pew for the safety and well-being of a new nation. Not that far at all from Federal Hall near Wall Street, where Washington would be inaugurated as America’s first President in 1789. Our lead visionary, Publisher Chase Backer, is a one of a kind leader too. He is never afraid to think bigger. To say yes to amazing possibilities and to push those around him to stand up and fight. Fight for what they believe in and to fight for the pursuit of excellence and the American Dream. There is no other magazine out there that takes the risks we do, that has reinvented the luxury niche as we have, by embracing diversity and redefining what it means to be a thought leader, an Influencer, a master of the universe, a philanthropist, an artist, a world-changer. It starts with Chase who knows what he wants and what he likes. He is gracious and kind but tough when necessary. Chase knows how to say no, but he also knows how to say yes. He knows how to empower those around him to work a little harder, be a little better. Pay attention to the details and if a specific magazine cover image needs to be changed and retouched 20 times until is right by Chase’s exacting standards, so be it. Chase’s daughter Jaime, our Assistant Publisher, is wise beyond her years and always seems to know the right thing to do on staff issues and on how to improve the digital space. This magazine platform continues to grow and expand as a powerhouse brand. You combine Chase’s fearlessness and an indomitable, hard-working staff and the results speak for themselves. The energy and excitement surrounding these magazines is palpable. What better way to cap off an unprecedented year of achievement than to feature television star Alana de la Garza on Metropolitan’s “Best of 2019” Issue. We thank and salute our readers for inspiring us always to work tirelessly to pursue excellence. Cheers! Adam Kluger Editor in Chief, Metropolitan Magazine/25A

Best Programs for Kids TALKING ACTING WITH APPLAUSE FOUNDER AUDREY KAPLAN
A
BY BRIANNA SUBIN PHOTO BY JILL LOTENBERG @FOTOHO @JILLPHOTOGRAPHY
s an aspiring actress, I was delighted to have an opportunity to interview Audrey Kaplan, the founder of Applause, a theatrical training school and Upper East Side institution for the past 25 years. After years of performing on stage and television, and nearly a decade as a New York City public school teacher, Audrey merged her passions for theater and education by founding Applause. She has directed and produced hundreds of productions at Applause, while also coaching many children for professional work and auditions for performing arts schools and colleges over the years.

Ms. Kaplan was kind enough to answer all my questions about the importance of developing my craft, the importance of finding an agent, creating a reel and having proper headshots. The highlight of our meeting was when Audrey showed me how to cry on command at an audition. Audrey Kaplan is incredibly knowledgeable, connected within the industry and most of all kind, patient, understand and passionate about helping young performers. Audrey also advised me to explore my writing abilities and create my own content to bring to an agent.
Applause the best resource for aspiring actors. Applause is not only a training ground for actors, singers and dancers, Applause has also produced some of the busiest and most respected writers, directors and producers working in TV today. Starting out as a modest enterprise in the performing arts, Applause has steadily expanded over the past 25 years. Its staff of more than 50 expertly trained instructors offer a wide-ranging curriculum that reaches more than 4000 children annually, providing beginning to pre-professional training in acting, musical theater, dance and film acting. applauseny.com

2019 saw its share of fires, from the rooftop of Notre Dame in April to an ongoing political firestorm in Washington, DC. In the art world, it was Andy and at the movies, Joaquin Phoenix had a big laugh on Hollywood as the Joker. A young hero emerged to take up the fight on climate change and the Bronx Bombers once again became the talk of the town. Tiger tore up Augusta to claim another green jacket, while Marisa Tomei had theatergoers stomping their feet and applauding on the Great White Way. Metropolitan Magazine is delighted to present some of the notable newsmakers, movers and shakers and other luminaries who were memorable or simply the best. The American Civil War Museum BY PROFESSOR LUKE SALISBURY
T
he American Civil War Museum in Richmond, Virginia, is one of the most innovative and thought-provoking museums in the country. The preservation and presentation of the Civil War have never been more important. Some say the war never ended. The Confederate battle flag, the famed stars, and bars (Actually the battle flag of the Army of Northern Virginia— you can learn about its evolution from banner to symbol at the museum) is still controversial. Look at the recent debates surrounding Confederate monuments. What did they mean when they were put up? What do they mean now? What should be done with them? Was the war fought over slavery? Should there be reparations for “the peculiar institution?” Have

the psychic wounds of the Civil War healed? How does a museum located in the heart of the former capital of the Confederacy deal with such difficult issues? Robert Hancock, Senior Curator & Director of Collections, says the key is to look at history from many angles and to present information “in impactful ways that really engage the public.” This means visual and interactive exhibits, online exhibits, blogs, outreach to schools, free programs, and teacher institutes. Mr. Hancock is in a fine position to do this, as one of the first projects he worked on, was the first-ever exhibit on antebellum slaves. Before Freedom Came was at the Museum of the Confederacy, which subsequently became part of the American Civil War Museum, and was the most visited exhibit the museum ever
had. People came from all over the world, as they do now, and it is still asked about. As to the Confederate monuments on Richmond’s Monument Avenue, Mr. Hancock says, “The Museum doesn’t own them,” and individual communities need to deal with them on an individual basis, but if you want to know who put them up and why, the ACWM is the place to go. If you want to see photographs, flags, visit the White House of the Confederacy, the Tredegar Iron Works (The South’s most important industrial site), see objects from everyday life, do research, or learn about African Americans before, during, and after the war, this is the place. In fact, it’s the place to go for a deeper and fascinating look at the most traumatic and tragic event in American history.
Bella Terra PUBLISHING BY JAMIE MORAN
L
ocated in the scenic Hudson Valley, Bella Terra Publishing produces and distributes specialized maps, posters, art notecards and wall prints. Products include illustrated maps of U.S. lighthouses and railroad points of interest; National Geographic maps of Revolutionary and Civil War battlefields, and East Coast shipwrecks; plus Franko fish identification cards and dive maps. From their home office near Rhinebeck, the company makes notecards and matted prints of the original watercolor illustrations on their
maps, along with many others by the same artists—nearly 500 contemporary paintings of lighthouses, trains and scenic views. According to publisher and art director Bella Stander, the two most popular New York images are Katz’s Delicatessen on the Lower East Side and Jeffrey’s Hook Lighthouse (star of the beloved children’s book, The Little Red Lighthouse and the Great Gray Bridge). A former book reviewer and “distinguished art school dropout,” Stander enjoys seeking out unusual public domain art from past centuries. The happy results can be seen in Bella Terra’s
ever-increasing line of vintage art notecards and prints, and especially in their newest publication: “The Golden Age of Pirates.” This historic art map poster features 18th-century engravings of notorious buccaneers and their exploits, plus a period map of North America and the Spanish Main. Bella Terra’s products are sold in museum and specialty shops, and online at Amazon, eBay and Etsy. bellaterramaps.com

What was it like to return to CBS where you starred previously on Criminal Minds: Beyond Borders? Returning to CBS was a gift. Great entertainment I get to be a part of. Were you surprised/pleased to be added as a regular on FBI? Absolutely, when Dick said this was his plan, I was really excited. Great show, fantastic story telling and actors. Also, I had worked with Jeremy Sisto on Law and Order and we had become great friends over the years. So that was fun too. Do you like how characters can move seamlessly from one Dick Wolf show to another? Yes, I think Dick has a way of connecting these worlds together in such an interesting way. He really has created a universe of his own. what’s the secret to playing a strong female lead in a drama series? Is your personality like a lot of the strong female characters you play-- or are you just a really good actress? I don’t know if there’s a secret, but I think everyone has a tough version of themselves that maybe they don’t show to everyone else. My husband teases me.... if there’s a situation in real life that I think is unjust in some way, and I get huffy about it... he will say “go get em Rubirosa” or some other character I’ve played. It’s pretty funny. I tend to be very mellow in real life, but someone messes with my kids for example, the tough version of myself will definitely show up. Other than that, I am VERY different than most of the characters I play.

Do you ever feel overwhelmed being a cast regular on so many different shows over the years...do you ever feel burnt out or do you love the challenge? How do you juggle being a mom and all your professional duties. What’s your secret? I LOVE being a mom. Yes. If someone says, “No, I can do it all. All the time.” I think they’re either lying or a secret superhero. Many days, I feel spread very thin, and just fantasize about eating hot food or waking up because my body naturally did. Lol But honestly, I would not trade it for anything. I am so incredibly lucky to have my kids, my husband, family, friends and a career that I honestly love. I think if there is a secret to balancing all of it, it’s recognizing what a gift I get to have everyday and remembering to be grateful. Not everyone gets that and I’m aware of it. What do you do for fun to wind down? We’re big into dance parties after dinner. I love to be outside. And I love a nice snuggling movie night with my family. Also, a workout/ lunch date with my girlfriends is fantastic. (Also a latte and a trip to Target) Do you have any exercise and healthy living tips that you swear by?
Something I love to do is learn my lines on the treadmill. I know it sounds crazy but something about the combo makes me memorize faster. Love a good barre class and a hike with my friends. Any hobbies? I actually am quite the crafter. I enjoy creating things, from making cakes to making jewelry. I joke that I know there will be a time when my nieces and nephews are old enough to say stop making me things!! My oldest niece just turned 10. May be coming soon. Lol Guilty pleasures? I would say food and wine. I am a FOODIE. And a sucker for a massage. Favorite things, places to visit? I loved Ireland, Italy any place with sunshine. I was meant to be a lizard. Does it ever get old always being recognized in public or do you embrace that? Most of the time being recognized is sweet. Unless my children are misbehaving and then I pray no one makes eye contact. There was a plane ride when my son was 18 months old that still sends shivers through my soul.
Who inspired you and mentored you to become such a prolific actress and top rated shows? I was always a huge Sally Fields fan. My mom took me to see “Places in the Heart” when I was a kid. I remember thinking “Wow, she’s amazing. How did she make me cry?” Any advice for aspiring actresses? Follow your gut. Don’t sweat the audition, they want it to be you. If you don’t believe in yourself, why should they. Do the best that you can do, that’s all you can control. And don’t give up. Eventually someone will say “Yes, you.” Do you ever feel like doing more movies? What’s in the future? Anything we missed that you would like to talk about? Go for it! I would like to do more films. I would like to do more TV. I want to do good work. Interesting roles are part of my creative drive. All actors can relate, we just want to create. How lucky am I? I get to play pretend for a living. Thanks so much Alana!

hat do top New York Chefs John Doherty and Todd English have in common? They were both featured at the Premier Plate Celebrity Chefs Tasting hosted by Air Culinaire Worldwide this October. Teterboro Airport. This was more than a tasting: it was a culinary exhibition! Hosted in one of the brand new skyscrapers on the west side of Manhattan, high above the everyday hustle and bustle and surrounded by floor-to-ceiling windows, this was an event to remember. If you’ve ever wondered where private jet owners eat and what’s on the menu, look no further. It was beyond surreal to watch John Doherty (a top chef at the Waldorf Astoria for twentyeight years who now owns and runs Black Barn
Restaurant) and Todd English (schooled by Julia Child and top chef at the Plaza NYC) along with top chefs Sal Lano, John Detloff, Frédéric Juillet (of Paris) and Aaron Watson (of London) and twelve other master chefs from Air Culinaire Worldwide prepare incredible dishes right in front of us in attendance. It all felt very intimate and exclusive, which is incredibly rare. There was Sous-Vide Black Chicken Thighs, Foraged Mushroom Salad, Cajun Scallops, Olive Oil-poached Asparagus with bloodred cherry tomatoes, Wagyu Shabu Shabu Tacos, Butter-poached Maine Lobster Risotto, Koreatown
Fried Cauliflower and Butternut Squash Ravioli to be had. For dessert there was Sal’s Lano’s Lemon Tart, the Black Barn’s Rum Butterscotch Bread Pudding and Kona Elite Coffee.
JOHN DETLOFF
Along with the savory culinary delights prepared on-the-spot, there was Petrossian Caviar, O.Vine’s Wine Essence Water, The Gama Signature Lounge for anything pertaining to aircraft management, a magnificent luxury watch showcase presented by A. Lange & Sohne, blue hydrangeas from Associated Cut Flowers and Hampton Bishop’s HK Balloon Bouquets. There was also Moët & Chandon Champagne, white wines galore by Vias Imports (which master sommelier Andrija Tadejevic paired specifically with each meal in mind), Pappy Van Winkle, Eagle Rare and Buffalo Trace Kentucky straight bourbon whiskey along with Sazerac cocktails. To top it all off, there was a dripping ice sculpture in the shape of an airplane with the words “Air Culinaire Worldwide” chiseled into its façade. As we watched on while Doherty prepared the Lobster Risotto, models floated by in gowns designed by Malan Breton (complete with conical hairdos and Siouxsie Sioux-inspired makeup by the Marcello Costa Team). Fortunately, I sat next to a true Broadway veteran, Sharon Moore who has been a regular in Chicago for twenty years. We were served the first risotto which was incredibly moist thanks to a bisque and was plated with lobster claws and tails dipped in a sumptuous cream/lobster butter made with vanilla beans. Chef Sal Lano’s Cajun Scallops were the best I’ve ever tasted as they were seared to a perfect golden brown. Todd English’s Wagyu Shabu Shabu Tacos were a Japanese/Mexican fusion idea that did not disappoint: they were not only original but delicious. With mushroom broth, hoisin mole, roasted peanut sauce, sweet chili aioli, avocado cream, pickled red onions, Wagyu beef and a corn tortilla, the tacos tasted wonderful and were presented beautifully as well. This new Lifestyle Menu will not only be featured in New York but in Paris and London as well and in over 1,800 airports. With this event, Air Culinaire Worldwide more than proved that they offer the “finest cuisine served on your private jet.” This event was co-curated and produced by E.D. Meals are offered in three alfresco dining rooms including the hotel’s acclaimed Mikrasia restaurant featuring contemporary Greek cuisine created by chefs who’ve trained in some of the world’s finest kitchens. Also new to the island, the secluded Katikies Villas Mykonos with kitchens and private pools is perfect for families and small groups. Escape to Santorini, or Thira, seasonally by ferry from neighboring islands or via plane from Athens and other major airports. The geography of this crescent shaped island is ruled by an underwater caldera, the crater of a volcano, which erupted in the 16th century BC and still warms part of the Aegean Sea where swimmers can go by boat to explore the natural hot springs. On dry land, visitors can discover Santorini’s windswept volcanic soil vineyards especially known for producing the crisp white wines from the Assyrtiko grape. The most beautifully iconic sights are the white washed villages punctuated
by deep blue roofs and bright pink flowers. Hotels, homes, restaurants and shops cling to the cliffs with a myriad of steps leading between them and down to the caldera below. Get ready to climb some stairs. A lot of stairs! The Katikies Resorts and Club operate 6 hotels on Santorini including the Katikies Santorini and Sun Rocks both perched on the edge of the caldera. New to the group is Katikies Garden in the village of Fira built within what was an historic convent. Many of the guest rooms have their own little gardens and everyone can experience a chef driven garden to table dinner with expert wine pairings at De Paul restaurant in the hotel’s openair courtyard. Not to be missed are Santorini’s glorious sunsets. The light dancing off the water and bouncing across the hills fills the sky with the most incredible colors. Yet another reason to toast with one of the island’s Assyrtiko wines. They may be hard to pronounce but they’re easy to love. katikies.com

Virtuoso Violinist Niccolò Paganini TRIBUTE CONCERT AT CARNEGIE HALL
M
aría Elena Paganini hosted and presented, “Paganini Honors Paganini”, a tribute to her ancestor Niccolò Paganini, famous virtuoso violinist who received the nickname “the violinist of the devil”. The historic concert event took place at the elegant, intimate, and timeless Weill Recital Hall in Carnegie Hall, New York City. Consuelo Vanderbilt Costin started the evening with a special introduction. Niccolò Paganini’s compositions of diverse works, including violin concertos, sonatas for violin or guitar and violin, and the 24 caprices were performed by five highly accomplished violinists accompanied by the piano. For the first time a
BY ANN GRENIER relative of this great violinist performed a tribute in his honor. One of the performers for the event was Violinist Stefan Milenkovich, who is considered one of top classical violinists in the world today. The difficulty of the compositions presented a significant challenge to these artists, although being professionals, were able to project the emotion and the internal fire that Paganini transmitted. Niccolò Paganini (1782-1840) was an Italian violinist, violist, guitarist, and composer. He was the most celebrated violin virtuoso of his time, and left his mark as one of the pillars of modern violin technique. His 24 Caprices for Solo Violin Op. 1 are among the best known of his compositions,
and have served as an inspiration for many prominent composers. Paganini composed his own works to play exclusively in his concerts, all of which profoundly influenced the evolution of violin technique. The tribute concert was the first stage of a tour that foresees visiting cities on different continents in the year 2020 under the name “Paganini Honors Paganini.”

Steve Tyrell IT’S NOT A NEW YORK CHRISTMAS WITHOUT STEVE TYRELL BY SCOT T LEON | PHOTO BY CATHY LAFEVER PR
W
hen people think of New York City Christmas traditions they think of the Rock Center Tree lighting or the Rockettes holiday show at Radio City. But for lovers of jazz standards December brings another longstanding joy: singer Steve Tyrell’s residency at the Café Carlyle. This year marks Tyrell’s 15th anniversary performing for the holidays at the storied venue having taken over from the legendary Bobby Short in 2005. It comes at a busy time for the singer, songwriter and producer.
He’s still going strong after a five decade career that saw him collaborating with everyone from Diana Ross, Stevie Wonder, Dionne Warwick and BJ Thomas. After producing hits for others his soulful vocal renderings of American standards came to the attention of the world with his appearances in the “ Father of the Bride” movies. A Grammy and Daytime Emmy Award winner, Tyrell’s American Songbook recordings have dominated Billboard’s Traditional Pop charts over the years with 2018’s “ A Song For You” hitting number one. Not one to rest 2019 saw him performing all over the world including Tuscany, releasing an extended edition of his “Back to Bacharach” disc and producing Broadway star Kristen Chenoweth’s new album “For the Girls”.
Tyrell’s holiday stints at Café Carlyle tend to be star studded: celebrities, politicians and New York luminaries flock to hear his renditions of “ Come Rain or Come Shine” or Burt Bacharach’s “ Look of Love”. Steve told me: “ It’s crazy to think that a phone call can change your life, but it can. I had no idea that when the Carlyle asked me to take over for the legendary Bobby Short after he died, that I would be doing so for the next 15-years. The Carlyle is an institution, so you can imagine what an immense honor and thrill it is for me to perform there year after year.” A thrill also for New Yorker’s who are fans of unique interpreter of classic standards.

Life is like A Box of Chocolates ELEVATING YOUR COMMUNICATION BY LAURIN SYDNEY
N
o, this is not yet another article about how dark chocolate is good for your health!
This is about elevating your communication, in every aspect of your life in order to truly be heard in our staticfilled world. Partly because of your phone (that thing you’ve probably already glanced out twice while reading this article,) you only have an average of 11 seconds to get your point across before you lose your audience. Eleven seconds to pitch your spanking new tech idea, apologize to a dear friend, win Lacthe Léman nomination, give positive reinforcement to your grounded teenager, impress at the job interview, kill on that panel, talk your way out of that traffic ticket, even securing global financing for your new venture.

Our reduced attention spans can be counteracted by making sure the visceral, chewy thing that’s at the core of your message is identified clearly and not buried under a lot of blah, blah, blah. As simplistic as it sounds, think of a tootsie pop. No one has the patience anymore to crack through the armor surrounding the chewy center. Abdallah Elayan VIDEO GAME INFLUENCER ON YOKAI WATCH 3 BY ROBBIE KLUGER Who is your favorite ultra-rare or legendary Yokai? Favorite Legendary Yo-kai has got to be Shogunyan. Ever since I unlocked him in YW1, he’s always held that special place in me. I still remember hearing him say his name the first time: I read it as “Showg-Onion” when in fact his name was really pronounced “Sho-gun-yan!” It was quite hilarious. Who is the toughest Yokai Watch Boss? Zenlightener in YW3 was pretty tough, due to the fact that you weren’t able to use items in the battle and the lead-up in order to get to him was pretty long and arduous. His “Red, Red, Green” attack could easily destroy you if you’re not paying attention to it!
What do you do for fun when you aren’t playing and reviewing videogames? Aside from gaming, I enjoy watching movies and catching up on various shows on Netflix and Hulu. I’m also a big fan of playing tennis or pickleball if the weather is warm enough. If you weren’t a video game fanatic/reviewerwhat else would you want to do as career? I went to college to become a teacher, originally. I still find myself in the teaching role as making tutorials and how-to videos on YouTube is what I do best. Have you ever thought of creating or developing your own video game? Any fun plans for the future?
I’ve never really been the creative type when it comes to developing things from scratch. I prefer playing and offering feedback to those products that are already on the market in order to make them better. As far as plans for the future, I keep up with the YouTube Grind on the daily. YW3 has a release in February, so I’ll be sure to keep on producing content around that game until we’re 100% done. Nintendo’s always got me busy with their new releases, so I can’t wait for their 2019 lineup of: Yoshi’s Crafted World, Animal Crossing, Fire Emblem Three Houses, Yo-kai Watch 4, and the new Pokemon Title! I’ll be covering all those games, so be sure to keep up with them by subscribing and turning on notifications!

hink lively music, tapas, dancing and art till midnight in Spain’s jewel, the city of Barcelona. In the last few years art fairs, cultural art events, galleries and more have invaded this up and coming artistic destination, including the contemporary SWABArtfair and the impressive Barcelona Weekend. Rumors are circulating that international jetsetters are arriving in flocks to check out the emerging art scene in the heart of Catalonia’s cultural and creative hub. This traveler’s dream includes lively entertainment, sports, media, fashion and contemporary art which has reigned supreme for many decades. Also, regional galleries, artists, art lovers, curators, museum trustees and local art collectors are all gathering to celebrate and support contemporary art in the streets of Barcelona. These two very different happenings help to focus new visitors wishing to immerse themselves in visual contemporary artworks, and enjoy new performances, events, happenings and more. “I would say that both initiatives are very necessary to boost the market and bring local proposals closer to an international audiences The Spanish market is small and Barcelona needs these types of projects that attract new international collectors,” said Ana Ramirez from Dilalica, an artistic experimentation centre which opened in May, 2019. The regional SWABartfair seeks to promote and showcase the latest artistic trends and talent emerging today in Spain, welcoming new galleries and presenting artists to new audiences. The art fair selects new galleries (under 5 years old) and launches projects selected by a committee of top art industry professionals. Omar López-Chahoud, independent curator and committee member, notes that “SWAB was well-curated this year with a roster of international galleries that includes Embajada and
Km 0.2 from Puerto Rico and Housing from NYC.” The latest hot artist, gallery or project to hit the Barcelona scene can be discovered among multiple innovative artistic projects, exhibitions, booths and installations. Director Carolina Diez-Cascón notes: “It is a place to discover the most innovative artistic proposals and meet the local and international artists from all disciplines who are pushing the boundaries of expression and tracing the course of the art scene for coming years.” Founded in 2006 by collector Joaquín Díez-Cascón, it remains true to its initial goal of engaging the new emerging cultural scene of Barcelona. He stated, “Swab Barcelona was born out of a need to join two of my passions: my home city of Barcelona and contemporary art. I wanted to create a space where I could share the artistic expressions and ideas that fascinated me at the time with Barcelona and its citizens”. Barcelona Weekend, on the other hand is a new independent, emerging platform reaching higher attendance records each year for international visitors who can experience real gallery spaces, events and artist initiatives up close and in person. Scheduled events launched throughout the long weekend have certainly caught the eye of many international collectors wishing to gain priority access to novel projects, dinners, exhibitions, artists, studios, special programming, gallery events and more. The weekend keeps everyone on their toes with walking tours and events organized to tap the exciting energy of contemporary artists as they take over the city! We sat down with both directors, Carolina DiezCascón, Art Director SWAB Artfair and Susanna Corchia, Barcelona Gallery Weekend Director to gain an insider view of what makes beautiful Barcelona and its art scene such an enjoyable and lively place to stop in each year.

to name a few. Susanna Corchia, Barcelona Gallery Weekend – Director With the fifth edition of the Barcelona Gallery weekend, could you provide a brief overview and history and how the program has evolved over the recent years? It was 2014 when the members of the gallery association Art Barcelona decided to organize the first Barcelona Gallery Weekend. The lack of an important art fair in our city such as ARCO in Madrid, and the awareness of the high potential of local galleries as generators of culture and contemporary art, lead us to create something new for the city that could also attract foreign audiences. In 2015, there were few gallery weekends in Europe: Berlin had one and then Brussels and at the same time, Paris in 2014, so we decided to apply this new formula to Barcelona. Carolina Diez-Cascón - Art Director, SWAB Artfair What makes SWAB art fair stand apart from other contemporary art fairs in Spain? SWAB is the only fair in the world created by a collector and gives it a unique vision and above all gives it the passion of art breathed in every corner. Not only its boutique concept makes it so special also its relationship with the city of Barcelona, a city that is a point of union of cultures and above all a reflection of the most effervescent of the current scene. That is SWAB, a lively and fresh fair that always reflects the latest and riskiest in the emerging contemporary art world. It is noted you have the “Emerging Section” talks about the galleries with less than 5 years in the international art scene. Can you tell us about the selection process for choosing the galleries and artists for your art fair? Swab has a selection committee, consisting of 4 collectors and 4 curators, who review each proposal taking into account its artistic quality. Jérôme Pantalacci, independent curator and director of Art-o-Rama, Domenico de Chirico, independent curator and director of DAMA, Omar López-Chahoud, independent curator, David Armengol, independent curator, Giuseppe Casarotto, collector, CAL CEGO, Marlise Hilesca, collector and Alberto & Ginette Rebaza, collector. The Emerging Program is formed by galleries with less than 5 years already established on the international art scene. Each year, Swab Barcelona hosts a selection of four contemporary art galleries less than two years old, who have not previously participated in an international art fair featuring artists born after 1975. SWAB offers this space free of charge as a way to boost young new galleries and to give a chance to emerging artists. 70 | MetMagNY.com | 25AMagazine.com
Where do you see the future of artfairs in the next decade with the rapid rise in social media and technology? Art adapts and develops with new times, the concept of online or pop-up galleries are becoming more frequent and thus the web platforms for the sale of art. I believe that art fairs will also take this digital evolution but will not lose their real presence, since personal experience with the art works, artists or gallery owners is necessary. Art feeds on the senses. Can you give us some of your favorite local tips for visiting Barcelona? Casa Vicens – Gaudí, the Gracia Area walk, Fundación Miró, Macba, Fundación Tàpies, Barrio Gótico walk and the Palau de la Música concert
The size, the urban connections and way of life simply made Barcelona the perfect city for a gallery weekend model. Since de very beginning the programme focused on galleries and its proposals. The intention was (and still is) to highlight these exhibition spaces where the artworks can be appreciated in the best way and to point out the importance of the figure of the gallerist as art producer and cultural promoter. The main programme in galleries is accompanied by a parallel programme of interventions out of the “white cubes”, called Compositions. For the first four years Compositions aimed to (re) discover special places of our cultural heritage and/or peculiar spaces sometimes hidden to the public and especially open for this event. For its fifth anniversary, BGW has decided to bring the
interventions to the public space (streets, bridges, passages...) to get the audience closer to art. This has been a great experience as the installations and the performances have generated a dialogue with the city and citizens were called to actively participate. Can you give our viewers some insight into the contemporary art scene of Barcelona and the activities planned for Barcelona Gallery weekend specifically? Barcelona is a city full of creativity and creative people. We have plenty of artists’ residencies, studios, museums, galleries, non-profit spaces and hybrid cultural associations. Speaking specifically of the galleries scene, we don’t have a mega-gallery nor a powerful art dealer that
marks the trends as other cities have. But we do have about three tens of mid-careers galleries and young exhibition spaces that put honest work and lot of energy in defending their proposals. In the past three years we are witnessing a recovering of local galleries which is a positive sign after ten years of crisis. Also, we are noticing an increasing interest from local collectors which are not so many and usually not very engaged in supporting local market. Things are changing and I like to think that is also thanks to the existence of events such as Barcelona Gallery Weekend where every year we invite local, national and international professionals (collectors, art dealers, advisors, curators and museum directors) to join us and discover the art scene in our city. From one year to another, people like to come back because they
enjoy the experience and the links with galleries are more and more strengthened. In the four days galleries have the occasion of receiving the public in a very special way, organizing meetings with artists, talks, debates, performances, cocktails, books presentations, concerts and so on. From the organization we take care of gathering all these activities and articulate guided tours to galleries and other interesting spaces of exhibition. We offer tours for professionals and general public, and from last year we also promoted a new programme named ArtĂŠvete, to foster new collectionism. We invite collectors to meet the public and explain their experience buying and living with art. We think they can be an inspiration for others and sharing personal experience make the all thing more real and accessible. December 2019 | 71

Barcelona weekend is noted for celebrating art in galleries, the vernissage dinner at the Royal Palace of Pedralbes welcomed a large array of international collectors and art lovers from around the world. Can you speak about the global perspective Barcelona Weekend provides to visitors coming to visit and your cultural initiatives to promote art collecting and local culture? In 2019 we have welcomed professional guests from fourteen different countries, from U.S.A. to Philippines, including Chile, México, and almost all the European states. The official dinner celebrated this year at the Royal Palace of Pedralbes is a wonderful opportunity of gathering agents from the local art scene and national and international professionals. It’s a very important moment for us to project Barcelona worldwide. Our city is very well known for its beauties in architecture, for sports and for the recognized designers. We want to mark a point also for contemporary art. Our statement is that it is worthy to come to Barcelona also for visiting galleries and contemporary art museums. Galleries have international and very contemporary programmes and the city itself

attract artists and curators to make residencies or establish their permanent home here. Besides the already mentioned guided tours, we also foster links among local artists, international institutions and collectors, and we build a tailor-made stay for our visitors in order to make their experience unique. This last edition we welcomed 20% more professionals than other years and we aim at increasing the number of total guests that every year decide to spend a couple of days with us. Could you provide us some insight into your best tips for visiting Barcelona? I always say that Barcelona is a “20 minutes city” because in an average of 20 minutes by walking you can reach almost every relevant spot. This is extremely practical for an event such as Gallery Weekend. Galleries function as junction points in the urban net, so you can plan to visit the city just by walking from a gallery to another and see other interesting spots in between. In the big district named Eixample, for example, you can organize a visit to a bunch of galleries in the area nearby Consell de Cent. Many of them are concentrated there (Joan Prats, Toni Tàpies, Mayoral, ADN, Victor Lope, Contrast, Projecte SD, etc.) and many museum and foundations (MACBA, Fundaciò Antoni Tàpies, Fundación
Mapfre) are just around the corner. Then, at the border of Eixample with the old city (Ciutat Vella) we have a new galleries area around the street called Trafalgar. Senda, Bombon Projects, Arte Aurora and Dilalica are four very active galleries that have colonized this former tissues depots and Chinese bazaars street. Not far from them, a visit to Fotocolectania and to Palau de la Musica is a must to do. The whole Eixample district is a bustle of gastro bars, restaurants and coffee shops. Strolling down these streets is a real pleasure of senses. I also would recommend visiting the connected municipality of L’Hospitalet de Llobregat where three very interesting galleries have moved their facilities in the past years (NoguerasBlanchard, Ana Mas Project and etHALL). We are assisting to a phenomenon of gentrification. Several artists, creative people and galleries decided to move to this more affordable area and now the streets around Santa Eulàlia are plenty of sparkling energy inhabiting the ancient industrial buildings and abandoned factories. The Sport of Polo Spotlight FEATURING AMY HUSON & CHRISTOPH RICHTER BY RACHEL VANCELET TE 74 | MetMagNY.com | 25AMagazine.com
A
my Huson is a devoted lover of horses and wine, an avid polo player, horse trainer, travel junkie and sommelier living currently in Spain and speaks Spanish, French and Italian. Christoph Richter has not lived in his home country, Germany, since he was 16 years old and his biggest passion is travel. He works for an investment bank in Paris, is also sommelier, makes music, runs a small hip-hop label with friends in Australia and is an aspiring 0 goal polo player. I visited with both of these dynamic players about their passion and love for the game of polo.
Polo Player Spotlight: Amy Huson Amy - Can you tell us how you came to be a polo player and a brief overview of Polo’s history and the inclusion of women? Women’s polo has not been around for that long. The first rated female player, Sally Sue Hale, had to disguise herself as a man for 20 years when she began playing in the 50’s. Her daughter, Sunny Hale, (now deceased) paved the way for women in polo by winning the 2000 US Open Polo championship with all male teammates and opponents. So really, women’s polo has only seriously been around for about 20 years. Now it is one of the fastest growing female sports in the world. I, like
many other women, came to polo from other equestrian sports, which in my case was show jumping and dressage, about 5 years ago. Polo is a difficult sport; it is known as the most extreme team sport in the world. It is a little easier to learn if you already know how to ride well, which was my case, but I am still by no means a professional player, although I am a professional rider. I can ride fast and balanced, but it’s the hand-eye coordination of hitting that tiny little ball with a long bamboo stick that seems to evade me!

How have you seen the sport of Polo progress over the last decade? Polo is still primarily a man’s sport, but that is changing quickly. There are about a dozen highly rated professional women in the world, and all-women’s tournaments are getting more common and more competitive. Many of our readers may have seen a Polo match/game, but how does one get involved to participate in the sport? Polo remains a niche sport that is largely played for the love of the game. Most people that know little or nothing about polo think about it as a very elite sport. That is part of the image that polo has marketed, so it is not surprising that people think that. But that is not the reality of the sport. The elite connotation is wrong as 90% of the people playing the sport seriously are from middle-class backgrounds and of those playing the game casually as a hobby, probably half are from privileged backgrounds. For the truly passionate players it is not just a sport. It is more like a way of life. You do not have to be an outstanding player; you just need to play well within your handicap. The cool thing is that there are polo clubs literally everywhere in the world and almost all of them have beginner lessons. Polo people love to entice new people into the sport, it’s like an instant world-wide club of friends. It’s such a small network that you will immediately be invited to clubs all over the world, and if you love polo, you will have on-the-spot friends wherever you go. How can one support the sport of Polo? What do you consider the best venues for spectators of the sport? The sports branding is getting more and more effective especially with social media coming into play and thereby new and added opportunities for sponsor visibility. The tough task is making it spectator-friendly on television or online live-streaming. The large size of field makes it difficult and expensive to stream it the way it should be, although with drone filming this is starting to get better. There are amazing clubs all over the world, but probably the most famous and spectator friendly would be Palermo in Buenos Aires where they play the Argentine Open every fall. The best, most highly rated players in the world play in a pitch in the middle of the city with huge grandstands so there is really no bad vantage point. And after each game, it is a giant, crazy fun party! What are your favorite polo clubs in the world? Well I am partial to where I live, in Sotogrande, and some of the amazing clubs here like Santa Maria and Ayala, and even my little home club, Iridike Polo, where we have fun practices amongst friends multiple times per week. Probably the most beautiful club I have ever been to is Villa a Sesta Polo Club near Sienna in Tuscany, Italy. And this year I even got to go to the Polo Club in Prague, which was in a lovely location about 10 minutes from the center of the city. I was surprised how pretty and how convenient it was. If you had one dream for the sport of Polo in the future, what would that vision be? Perhaps for the general public to understand the amazing relationship that occurs between horses and players, and how
76 | MetMagNY.com | 25AMagazine.com
most horses truly enjoy playing just as much as the people. And the lifestyle aspect the history that polo has with Argentina and the gauchos, the country sport lifestyle that is the horses, the game, the asados; and the friendly nature and instant camaraderie of players. Can you tell us more about the Santa Marie Polo Club season? Do you play during the season? I play all year around, there are tournaments at Santa Maria and Ayala almost every month of the year. High goal season starts in July just after the Woman’s tournament and continues until the end of August. I don’t play high goal mixed polo, although I did play this year in the high goal woman’s tournament. It was fun, much faster than I expected, but I made a great goal and I learned a lot. I did get to see the King of Spain last year! There are many Spanish celebrities that come, but I don’t pay a lot of attention, I would rather just drink wine and watch the game! Can you provide us some tips, advice and/or favorites spots in visiting Sotogrande, Spain? Sotogrande is a little known almost secret spot that once people discover it they keep coming back. It has a great beach and marina! It’s also a big spot for golf and sailing. We live a little more towards the mountains near one of the biggest National parks in Europe, where people hike, mountain bike, ride horses, and hunt. Overall it is a really outdoorsy place. Lots of rivers and even natural springs that are close. A great ski mountain is 3 hours away! As far as culture there are many small white historic villages all around that have festivals (called “ferias” here) where
people ride horses to the town and spend the day listening and dancing to Flamenco music and drinking Sherry. There are many good restaurants in and around Sotogrande; Spanish cuisine overall is quite amazing. Plus there is everything else; Sushi, Italian, Indian, Argentine, Moroccan, whatever you want! What is your passion and/or dream for your wine company? How did you launch? I started with a wine store that has a wine and tapas bar inside with the idea that people should be able to taste before they buy. I discover and promote the small, family boutique wines of Spain. I am now branching out into distribution. I only have Spanish wines, because to be perfectly honest, Spain is a treasure trove of amazing wine that is incredibly inexpensive! It is a very underappreciated country in that regard. And what happens is that most of the distributors here that export to other countries and/or sell wines to restaurants sell the same big brands, so all the restaurants and stores all over the world seem to have the same Spanish wines on their list. But as a sommelier, I love to do research and go out and search and discover the many highly rated exceptional quality yet small wineries that offer unbelievable prices. I am trying to fill the boutique niche because people are starting to want something unique and special; wine that is made with love and passion, by people that want to make wine. Not wine made a huge factory-type winery where people only work for a paycheck. People want a story, they want a connection to what they buy and drink, because ultimately wine is not just an alcoholic beverage,
it is a wonderful experience to be appreciated and shared. Just like polo! Wine and polo are meant to be shared with friends! Polo Player Spotlight: Christoph Richter Christoph, How many years have you been playing Polo, and what was it that drew you the sport? I have been playing for 3 1/2 years and it was a rather curious story how I got started. I relocated from London to Sydney for a lifestyle change and a new job. A year later the firm closed their Asian/ Oceanian business and I found myself out of a job. Sitting on the beach the next day I thought look at the upside you finally got something you usually never have - time! Polo has always fascinated me, but I did not even know how to ride nor I had friends playing. Sure enough the same afternoon I had my first lesson and the rush of adrenaline got me hooked right away. A fast sport that requires skill, technique and a cool head in iffy situations - yep, sign me up. I took full advantage of my time off with 3-4 lessons per week and a trip to Argentina for 2 weeks. I spent 4-5 hours per day in the saddle and while this was a blisteringly painful experience and this really made the difference. I played my first chukkas 6 weeks after starting polo. For anybody thinking about commencing their polo journey I would wholeheartedly recommend to have a concentrated push in the beginning. This way you get over the frustrating beginning period quickly and end up enjoying the sport much sooner. The other thing that drew me to polo was my December 2019 | 77
jetset
love for animals. The symbiosis of working together with the horse and outpacing your opponent to clinch that last goal - this is true teamwork. I do not have my own horses yet as I prefer to travel and play polo all over the world, but it is amazing how quickly you build a bond with an animal. It teaches you a lot about your focus as well - if your razor sharply focused, it will help you a lot more than using the whip. What they say about surfing holds true for polo too polo is not a sport, but a lifestyle. Polo gets you travel, meet interesting (usually slightly in a good way crazy) people and it is a hell of a workout if you push it. If your hands aren’t shaking from the adrenaline after the last chukka, you haven’t pushed it hard enough. What are your favorite polo clubs in the world? Polo has been very kind to me and I’ve played in Australia, England, Spain, Germany, France, the US and Argentina. Richmond Polo Club in Sydney where I learned will always be dear to my heart, but Sydney Polo Club is just gorgeous and terrific to play at - it is definitely in my top three. Fifield Polo Club outside of London and Iridike Polo in Sotogrande got the best rental ponies I’ve played, while Guards and the Royal Berkshire are stunningly beautiful, offering some great polo. The International Polo Club in Palm Beach has the best fields I’ve played on and the club house has a serious wine list. Finally, I do believe that my home club Chantilly (just outside of Paris) offers the best mix I’ve come across. Great fields, competitive level, amazing coaches, nice people and a terrific post-match Argentine asado. I also take lessons every Monday at Polo de Paris - not only it is very pretty, but it deserves also the prize for being the most convenient polo club, being just over 5 minutes drive from my place. If you had one dream for the sport of Polo in the future, what would that vision be? I would love polo to grow, more people to play and for the sport to be more accessible. Everybody I have introduced to polo absolutely loves the energy and is hooked. I would love to see also a lot more kids playing. At Chantilly they do a great job getting even 4-5 year olds onto Shetland ponies. This is how it should be. My only regret with polo is that I haven’t started playing earlier. Can you tell us more about the Chantilly Polo Club season? Do you play during the season? Chantilly has a lot of history when it comes to horse culture. The Great Stables, a masterpiece of 18th century architecture, were built for LouisHenri de Bourbon. Having continental Europe’s largest polo club there seems like a logical choice
78 | MetMagNY.com | 25AMagazine.com
Chantilly runs their season from April to October on grass and then switches to arena polo. I love the fact that Chantilly offers something at all levels - from the French Open to -1 goal tournaments, from university alumni polo to kids polo. 9 curated fields and a full schedule make sure that you are not left bored after playing yourself, there’s always some nice polo to watch. Attendance to matches is free and the crowds it drew for the French Open was impressive. I would highly recommend a Sunday afternoon asado followed by watching some polo or even having a go yourself. I have played in a number of tournaments this season, however not as much as I wanted as I started late into the season due to an ankle injury from skiing. For this winter season I am playing once a week arena polo at Polo de Paris and will fly to Florida for a few intensive days to achieve my big goal of becoming a 0 goaler next season. drink! Maggio Cipriani the youngest of the generation is raising the roof with his hot new addition to the family legendary portfolio. The new intimate lounge concept he created in 2016 called Socialista New York, which followed shortly by Socialista London and Dubai now has the Miami heat in pursuit of the Cuban flare with inspired cocktails, unique signature dishes, and even special hand-rolled cigars! The president of Cipriani US, a fourth generation of the famed Cipriani family from Venice,
welcomed close friends and family to celebrate the new venture with a cozy and private vibe and the night was certainly set on fire! Like his brother Ignazio, Maggio, spent time as a teen working first at Harry’s Bar in Venice, then Hong Kong and London. Side by side with his grandfather and father, he worked the floors of the restaurants and trained in the kitchen & pasta factory in the various locations of Cipriani landmarks globally. His brother Ignazio known for his own independent hospitality-concept called Mr. C Hotels, opened in Los Angeles in 2011 with
elegance and flair, followed by Mr. C Seaport in New York and Mr. C Coconut Grove. The next venture Cipriani Miami in 2013 was run by Maggio and continued onward with a special location of Cipriani Masaryk in Mexico City in 2015. This list only continued to grow with Cipriani Dubai in 2016 followed by Cipriani Riyadh in 2017 and Cipriani Las Vegas in 2018. Who knew this famous family had taken over the world! With a huge fan following, every year the Cipriani family continues to bring their special Italian romance, unique taste and sexy vibes to each and every location worldwide. Socialista is sure to be the new Miami hotspot and evokes the fabulous Caribbean inspired playground which Miami is so well known for! Maggio provided guests with fresh new romance and refinery that only speaks to the Cipriani name. Socialista Miami is located in the heart of downtown Miami and only steps away from Cipriani Downtown Miami, which continues to draw on the strong Cuban influence and roots that remain ever-so-present in the city’s rich history. The glitterati and jet-setters all hopped of their private jets and private cars to hit the famous Miami Art Basel Week and certainly had this private invitation on their top VIP schedule. Performers Bad Bunny & Travis Scott, models Bella Hadid, Joan Smalls, Nina Dobrev, Luka Sabbat, Vita Sidorkina, Madison Headrick, and Kourtney Kardashian all arrived at the fashionably late hour and partied the night away. Art world’s guests included collectors Eugenio Lopez, Brandon Davis, Guillermo Rozenblum, Nick Acquavella, Simon Castet & Helly Nahmah as well as artists Daniel Arsham, Domingo Zapata, and Lolita Cros. who were overheard chatting on the latest art discovery at Art Basel. Famous architects David Adjaye and Piero Lissoni, designers Carlos Almada, Yves Behar, Sasha Bikoff & Bill Sofield were also in attendance who all danced the night away. Sopranoscon A 20-YEAR TRIBUTE IN TWO DAYS BY MELISSA CLARK | PHOTOGRAPHED BY PAUL PRINCE
I
t has been nearly twenty years since the hit show “The Sopranos” first broadcast on HBO, quickly earning its bones as one of the most popular TV dramas of all-time. All told, The Sopranos would end up winning 21 Primetime Emmys, 5 Golden Globes, and a multitude of other awards. Creator David Chase combined his personal relationship with his mother, being in therapy and his fascination with the mob scene since his adolescence, and bada-bing, “The Sopranos” was born. Led by a charismatic and oft-times vulnerable mob boss named Tony Soprano, “The Sopranos” has loomed large over the TV landscape thanks in
96 | MetMagNY.com | 25AMagazine.com
large part to the acting brilliance of the show’s lead actor James Gandolfini who passed away in 2013. Not surprisingly, it was Gandolfini’s legacy that was the talk of Sopranoscon. Actor/artist Federico Castelluccio aka “Furio,” Tony’s devoted enforcer, shared his thoughts about an enormous mural of Gandolfini within the Meadowlands Arena. “It was an overwhelming feeling when I walked into the convention center and viewed this amazing hand-painted mural of James Gandolfini done by artist Sipros Naberezny of the
Bushwick Collective. They captured that sparkle in his eye that the Director of Sopranos loved about Jim, and being an artist myself, I have a sensitivity to that. The love I have for Jim and his family, I knew that they would have that same feeling when they saw it as well.” Vincent Pastore, aka “Big Pussy,” said to Michael Mota, one of the creators of Sopranoscon, “You made history with this event.” Dominic Chianese, aka mob boss “Junior Soprano,” was equally thrilled by the fan-fest to celebrate all things, Soprano, “I’m so happy to

be here; I am full of energy, and this a wonderful event to share with my Soprano’s family.” Dominic, a talented singer, delighted fans in attendance with a private concert where he sang the Italian hit “Old Napoli” and a few melodies his grandfather taught him, Chianese told me, “I am so happy to be here and part of this.” Businessmen Michael Mota, Joe Fama, and Dan Trader got together; and decided to put on this most unprecedented convention for Soprano fans, “for the fans by the fans.” Photos from memorable episodes were placed on the wall, Dr. Jennifer Melfi’s (Lorraine Bracco) office was recreated as was the Bada Bing. As Sopranos fans got a once in a lifetime chance to rub elbows with some of their favorite Sopranos castmembers, they also heard a taped message from Gandolfini’s real-life son Michael Gandolfini, “Just wanted to reach out and say congratulations on this weekend. I saw/heard all the hard work you guys put in. Thank you, my dad would be blown away as I am. Sending love to you and yours!” Michael will be staring in David Chases’s Sopranos movie prequel, “The Many Saints of Newark,” scheduled to hit theaters on September 25th, 2020. Michael, who looks a lot like his famous father, will play who else, a young Tony Soprano. What better way to keep it in the family?
Reporter’ s note: I met actor James Gandolfini three months before he passed away from a heart attack in 2013. I was working as a waitress at Lenny’s Clam Bar in Howard Beach, and he came in with Sopranos cast-mate Tony Sirico (“Paulie Walnuts”). I was invited to a sit-down to speak with Jim (as he introduced himself) and Sirico. I was so honored to meet such down-to-earth men. They were so kind, humble, and took photos with patrons. I will never forget that day or Jim and his graciousness. Gandolfini once described himself as a “260-pound Woody Allen”, and after meeting him, I couldn’t agree more.-Melissa Clark December 2019 | 99

Interview with Author and Artist Adam Kluger BY MANFRED GOGOL What creative endeavors have you been up to? Just trying to keep my chin up. But the short stories and the Dreck come when they come and that’s been pretty consistent. and when I say short stories I really mean flash fiction. What’s the difference between short stories and flash? Well, length and words. I like flash because most of the times less is more and again I would give credit to Hemingway as he knew that it was always best to employ his iceberg theory of storytelling where only 10% of the story is overt. I just read a collection called the Nick Adams stories. So great to see A Three Day Blow and The Killers in a chronological order of sorts. Also, “Summer People.” A subtle gem. I rediscovered that story and it illustrates the point that sometimes it’s much better for a writer to hold back. Hold back on what? Hold back on expository stuff. The story. Let the reader work a little. Infer, conclude, ponder. How do you do that? There a lot of ways. Non-linear and open-ended storylines. Ambiguous characters. In fact, my forthcoming sequel to “Desperate Times” is going to be titled “Winners & Losers.” The title refers to the dialectic that is on-going in all of us. Conflicting thoughts, impulses and desires. Life is generally not black and white and neither are people. We are all various hues of gray. Winners & Losers is sort of a double entendre. The characters in the stories vacillate between both categories through the arc of their stories. It’s really up to the reader to determine the true nature of each character as they face various 100 | MetMagNY.com | 25AMagazine.com
conflicts and make various decisions that determine how things play out. But even then I really like to leave things open-ended because life is like that and fortune can always change on a dime. It’s a glass half full or empty situation. Like Dorian Gray, the stories and characters can change up on you on a second read. A lot of the motivations, conflicts, and resolutions are open to interpretation. My hope is that the stories will provide resonance and entertainment value. There is definitely some a dark humor to the work A: Thanks. I try to create a roller-coaster. I think readers deserve to be entertained. Stories should do that. There should be a combination of a couple things at work in my opinion. Real emotion. Honesty. Humor and an appreciation of the ironic and absurd nature of things. The writing should be crisp and that’s where “less is more” is a valuable tool, or as Ernie would say best, ‘All writers need a failsafe bullshit detector.” How do you do that? A: I don’t always. Sometimes you’ll put out a clunker. Others might like it for various reason but writers know. If the writer doesn’t connect with his words, chances are neither will his audience. You have to hear your own voice as a writer and that needs to evolve constantly. I try to read as many of the great writers as possible and if necessary, re-read and re-read them. Hemingway, Bukowski, Conrad, Fitzgerald, Dostoyevsky, Melville, I mean the list is too longer to mention here but the point is these great writers are great teachers and a continual source of inspiration for any aspiring writer. I’ve been a professional writer for over 30 years and I feel like I’ve just now discovered my
true voice, and really flash fiction feels like the perfect length to tell a story properly without diluting its power. You mentioned your writing is like a roller coaster and I noticed the first story in Winners & Losers is entitled, Coney Island. That’s true. That particular story is about the need to find courage when facing the unknown and a whole bunch of other things. I also like to arrange the stories in a collection so that the reader can move from one space or mood to a completely different neighborhood. Unlike the first book, some of these character stories are told over a series of interconnected pieces of flash. Three or four stories focus on a couple, other stories have repeating characters as part of a rogue’s gallery of grotesques. Sherwood Anderson presented various interconnected off-beat characters in Winesburg, Ohio and “Winners & Losers” has a similar sort of feel that some of these characters inhabit a shared universe within the collective unconscious. What do you mean? Unlike Desperate Times which was a shattered mirror of 45 random stories, “Winners & Losers” offers overlap, and mini-character arcs told over the course of multiple pieces of flash. I’m glad to have found the Nick Adams stories at the Westsider Used Book Store recently. To discover those Hemingway stories ordered in a similar manner to Winners & Losers is comforting. Makes me think maybe it wasn’t such a bad idea to mix things up. That’s usually the case.

Howie Keck ARTIST SPOTLIGHT BY ADAM KLUGER
I
’ve been a big fan of artist Howie Keck since the night I first stumbled into his Carnivalesque art studio on Franklin street across from the Knitting Factory after a CNN Showbiz Today shoot in the mid-’90s. At the time, Howie, a muralist, had created a vibrant world of wall-sized celebrity murals that evoked thoughts of Kenny Scharf and Keith Haring. Keck is known around the world for his distinctive art in the world’s most popular nightclubs. Howie creates highly skilled realistic oil and acrylic paintings. He uses brush and airbrush. He creates portraits, still life, event backdrops, decor, even glass mosaics. Keck’s latest creation is a celebration of Cannabis Culture ( A Weed Wall of Fame!) for Weed World Candies. The provocative 3D DayGlo artwork features eye-popping art inspired by 420-friendly pop

culture icons like Miley Cyrus, Cheech & Chong, Snoop Dogg, Seth Rogen, Bill Maher, Bob Marley, and even Mike Tyson. The Weed Wall of Fame will soon be unveiled to the NYC media as part of Weed World Candies plans to provide an educational, tourist-friendly space for adults that celebrates the medicinal benefits of hemp & cannabis and will feature augmented/virtual reality, performance art and live music at the flagship store on 7th Avenue-two blocks from Penn Station. Pretty groovy stuff! Weed World Candies also sells Cannabis-related apparel, novelties and their famous mouth-watering lollypops that are every color of the rainbow and sold across the country in loud trucks in an effort to promote a better understanding of the potential benefits of hemp, cannabis, and CBD oil. This is what Howie Keck had to say about his latest creation: “ I am an artist who works in many mediums. The Weed World Candies Mural is my form of freestyle homage to how marijuana has played a major role in Pop Culture. I use fluorescent and metallic paint to emphasize and customize the pop culture imagery that I appropriate. As a longtime lover of anything weed-related, this mural is a labor of love as well as my homage to this hallucinogenic flower. - Howie Keck December 2019 | 105
